ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय ।। Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya।। The translation of this Vishnu mantra means, “I bow to the Lord who resides in the hearts of everyone”. This mantra helps to develop compassion because it reminds of the presence of godly being in every being. The emotions of love that arise from chanting this mantra help remove obstacles from one’s life. Carved shanka (conch shell) with Vishnu Yantra and Vishnu forms, Nepal

RaghavaJanaki - The Reunion
A Sri Ramachandra and Sri Janaki milan in Modern AU only for @harinishivaa
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Lakshya, where are you taking me?" Raghav sighed heavily as his over excited younger brother Lakshya pulled him through the narrow lanes of Varanasi.
"Dada!!" chirped the younger brother happily. "You should come with me! I have stumbled upon this beautiful small Palace! It is also beside Ganga River." He told him.
"Okay, that is fine I get it but why pulling me? You could have taken Bhaskar or Shashaank." Raghava said, sighed as his younger brother pulled him more in response. Soon they reached and Raghava couldn't help but gape at the majestic river in front of him.
Paapanashini Ganga flowed majestically, the kal-kal sound of the water so soothing for Raghava that he closed his eyes and inhaled. The heavy flow of River Ganga was a bit faster than that of Sarayu, but still, for him both the Rivers were same. Be it Ganga of North or Kaveri of South, every river was same as Ganga for him.,
"Isn't it beautiful Dada!?" Lakshya asked happily chirping and skipping around, deciding to bring Bhaskar and Shashaank, his another elder brother and Twin soon.
The soft gasp didn't escaped the ears of Raghav as he turned swiftly, his eyes clashing with the doe like black eyes of the golden hied beauty that was holding a little a little basket of flowers.
Ram ko dekh kar, Sri Janaka Nandini,
Baag me vo, Khadi ki Khadi reh gayi..!
(Upon seeing Rama, Sri Janaki stilled in the Garden)
He did not even saw her face properly. He just saw her pink lips parting away in surprise, that oxidised nose-pin glinting under the setting sun, her doe eyes widening and the gentle breeze making her curly hairs dance across her face.
Ram dekhe Siya, aur Siya Ram ko,
Chaaron akhiyan ladi ki ladi reh gayi..!
(Ram looked at Siya and Siya looked at Ram,
Their four eyes clashed together..!)
Sriya wondered if her Bholenath had any hand or any hidden motive in sending her to Flower Garden, for she never realised that she will find a beautiful man with dark skin, shining majestically at due to the setting sun. His lotus petal like brown eyes were the first thing that captured her eyes, and she couldn't help but gasp, which he probably heard.
The Janakpur gaye dekhne ke liye,
Saari Sakhiyaan Jharokhan se Jhaakan lagi..!
Dekhte hi nazar mil gayi dono ki,
Jo jahaa thi khadi ki khadi reh gayi..!
(The went Janakpur to see around, and all the Friend/Sisters {of Siya} started looking through windows. As soon as they saw each other their eyes clashed, and they stilled altogether.)
Raghav didn't really had any motive to come to Varanasi, but Lakshya was bored, so his younger brother tagged him, Bhaskar and Sashank along. On the other hand, Urmi, Mansi and Shikha, Sriya's sisters were decorating the room.
"Hey! Who is that handsome male?" cried Urmi noticing Raghav, and Mansi and Shikha crowded around her near window. Although, this didn't bothered the two individuals, who had stilled in their places as soon as their eyes clashed.
Boli hai ik Sakhi Ram ko dekh kar,
Rach gayi hai vidhata ne jodi sukhad..!
Fir Dhanush kaise todenge vaare Kunwar?
Mann mein Shanka, bani ki bani reh gayi..!
(Upon seeing Ram one of the Sakhi's (Friend) says that the Lord has created a beautiful bond. But how will this gentle looking Prince break the bow? This doubts stayed in their hearts)
"Mahadeva!! They look so good together!!" Urmi wondered with a excited smile. "Of course! Just look at them!" Mansi took their nazar (evil eye) off as she and her sisters gazed at Raghav and Sriya. "Hey but wait- We all know that Jiji is very divine, isn't she? All the Priests and Sages we have met till now said that she is a divine woman, and no ordinary man can be her husband, what if this handsome hunk isn't the one?" Shikha asked, making them humm altogether and cup her cheeks in tension. Will their sister remain unmarried?
Boli dooji Sakhi Chhotan Dekhan mein hai,
Par chamatkaar inka nahin jaanti..!
Ek hi baan mein taadika raakshasi,
Uth saki na, padi ki padi reh gayi..!
(The other Sakhi says that he looks like is short, but she doesn't know the miracle of him. Just with one arrow, the Demoness Taadika didn't got up {after being stuck by})
"Also, he kinda looks short." Shikha's words made Mansi whack her lightly on head, and Urmi giggled. While her sisters were talking and giggling among themselves, Sriya realised something.
Her eyes widened and balance seem to falter, tears brimming in her eyes. It seemed as if a sudden burst of light appeared behind him, the silhouette of a man with a bow in his arms growing large and large, as Sriya almost fainted, but held her ground somehow.
Unknown to her, this handsome dark skinned stranger had same effect. He was divine, his birth on Karthika Purnima or Deva Dipawali and his extraordinary horoscope was not only the indication, but also that his mother was having a hard time finding a woman for him. But when he saw this beautiful damsel looking like the Goddess Ganga with the setting sun reflecting her golden face, he knew she was the one for him, and the silhouette of the regal woman behind her spoke levels.
Ram ko dekh kar, Sri Janaka Nandini,
Baag me vo, Khadi ki Khadi reh gayi..!

Exejinkaverse Navi profiles - 2nd trilogy
aka my favorite double team members, who have enough going on to be on their own post while i design the rest of them.
SERGEI "SEARCHMAN" ZAITSEV
Tumblr media
24 y/o
Sharoese ; no known relatives
Co-lieutnant and Navi supervisor of Sharo's 13th military regiment ; formerly one of the ringleaders of Sharo's Undernet
Navi ability is supersight coupled with a biological radar and the analytic capacities of a computer ; weapon is a sniper rifle (Search Scope)
His build and history also make him a fierce melee fighter.
Additional BattleChips include grenades, an army knife, Satellite Ray and the Anubis.
Growing up a street delinquent in the poverty of Sharo’s dirty backstreets, devoid of family or education ; the only faith Sergeï ever had in the world came from an idealistic soldier who saved him from a particularly bad conflict and promised to get back to him after he was done with his current mission - which took his life before he could. Sergeï was left to spend another couple of years surviving in the slums, growing into the known and feared "HawkEye" - only to be sold out by his men and arrested by the military, then offered a position among it due to his abilities. Sent by General Malenkov to retrieve his nephew Laika, fate revealed the latter to be the late soldier's son, on the way to follow his father’s footsteps to discover the truth behind his sudden passing. Sergeï then accepted Malenkov's offer if only to look after Laika, forming their contract, to honor the man’s memory - joining the young soldier on his enrollment and into their journey towards a dangerous conspiracy.
If Sergeï behaves similarly to Blues on the job, his apparent cool results from both natural phlegm and a conscious effort to keep himself in check. Having lived the life he’s lived, Sergeï used to be quite violent - and can still be under certain circumstances. As Laika and their shared goal finally gave him a purpose, Sergeï quelled his rage to play his part efficiently in the dangerous ploy they were entering. Still, he doesn’t give his life much value and can show the same selflessness known of Rock and Blues, especially when it comes to their Operators' safety. However, pressing on and figuring that their goal may not be as hopeless as planned, Sergeï eventually begins thinking more on the long term, starting with him quitting smoking after Regal’s first defeat. Despite his nihilism and bluntness, his experience and broader vision appoints him the wisest of the "RGB trio". And despite the appearances, he's also great company to the little ones...
His codename was given to him by General Malenkov to break from his past.
---
TOHOPKA "TOMAHAWKMAN" SANDOVAL
Tumblr media
16 y/o
Native Netopian ; first child of tribe's chief
Civil NetBattler, with many part-time jobs on the side (particularly for food-delivering services)
Navi ability is catalyzing environmental phenomena, such as growing grass from healthy soil and making rain fall from humid air ; weapon is an axe (Tomahawk Blade)
Fit, tough, quick-footed and with high spatial awareness, he's an all-around formidable fighter.
Additional BattleChips include a three-pieces totem pole - one to heal, one to protect and one to unleash extra firepower on the battlefield.
Rowdy indigenous Netopian and son of his village’s chief, Tohopka’s abilities have conferred him a special status among his peers ever since tender childhood, though it didn’t prevent him from living a fairly normal (if adventurous) life with his sister Shanka and their younger friend Dingo. Meant to develop his abilities to more spiritual ends, Tohopka was instead drawn to the way of the warrior, causing occasional arguments with the tribe’s elders - starting with his father. One particular fight had Tohopka run away from the village, then sheepishly go back a few days later after a bit of calm and self-reflection - only to discover on the way that a large flood, caused by the break of a nearby dam, had been unleashed in his absence. By the time he’d made it back, Dingo’s parents had already been lost to the currents - Tohopka barely saving the boy himself in time. Ridden with guilt, Tohopka took the oath to look after Dingo ever since, culminating in the formation of their contract as they set out to prevent their village’s destruction by a rich corporation.
Outside of the heat of battles, Tohopka is noticeably wiser and more collected than his NetOp, the incident he blames himself for further compelling him to think before he acts. He has a bit of a "responsible big brother" act going on but remains outspoken and enthusiastic, bringing life wherever he goes with his temper as much as with his abilities. But with his grief much more recent than his friends' are, growing closer to him may reveal that part of this cheer is used as an avoidance mechanism, and that his self-esteem is not as high as he makes it appear to be.
His codename was given to him by his father as a blessing upon his departure.
---
MEI "MEDDY" ZI TENG
Tumblr media
16 y/o
Choinese ; adopted granddaughter of Cardamom
Nurse in-training
Navi ability is producing any molecule she knows the composition of and releasing them through her skin ; weapon is a throwing pill (Meddy Capsule).
This doubles with a good perception of her chemical environment and, while the rest of her stats may be ordinary, touching her directly is not without risk.
Additional BattleChips include syringes, scalpels and throwing darts. Each can be combined with various concoctions of her own making.
Choinese maiden from remote, poorer regions, Mei was sold off at a young age for her abilities to be exploited by a shady local laboratory. A long investigation eventually had the structure's unethical ways exposed and dismantled ; Mei, severely weakened both physically and mentally by years of abuse, was entrusted to Cardamom, both to ensure her recovery and to hide her away from any follow ups who may try to reclaim her. The herbalist’s capable hands, combined with his remote home’s therapeutic atmosphere, eventually proved beneficial for Mei. The treatment was reinforced by the presence of Jasmine, cheerful and carefree child despite the recent loss of her own parents, whom Mei quickly grew fond of. Eventually, she was healthy enough to take Cardamom's teachings alongside Jasmine so as to be able to use her abilities of her own volition, to help people.
A late but crucial addition to Double Team, Mei brings out a much-needed touch of feminity on the Navis' side. Diligent on the job, she takes no nonsense when it comes to her teammates' health, equally capable of sweet and reassuring bedside manners than knocking out a stubborn patient herself. The rest of the times, she's frivoulous and perhaps somewhat flirty, though she always keeps a subtle distance with others as the chemicals she release don't differentiate between friends and foes. Of course, the scars from the past remain and some situations may make her lose grip.
Her codename started as a simple nickname given to her by Jasmine.
---
COLE "COLONEL" SHEIFFER
Tumblr media
32 y/o
Netopian ; was orphaned through his early-to-mid twenties
Navi commander of Netopia's Network Corps
Navi ability is summoning toy-like soldiers ; weapon is a lightsword (Colonel Saber).
His swordsman skills and extremely tough build make him worth an army on his own.
Additional BattleChips include a bazooka. He also uses his cape for defense and surprise attacks.
Netopian veteran from the cybernetics units, Cole enrolled to financially support his worker father as his mother did not survive the birth of his little sister Iris. When their father was lost to a work accident several years later, Cole carried through his duty after putting Iris on a foster home - one that was not overseen by the army, as he did not want them to take interest in her abilities. They would be reunited for Cole's allotted month off for the next years, until his superior, Commander Caskett, was lost to the battlefield. The siblings were then repatriated by Dr. Wily as one of the late Commander's wills. On this occasion, they met the latter's son, Baryl, with whom Cole would eventually forge a contract : their common skills and shared values allowed them to quickly rise in ranks until Baryl could take his father's succession despite many losses and hardships. Cole himself became a military secret over the years. Knowing Iris in a secure environment enabled him to fully focus on his duty and to stand as an unmovable leader.
Much like Blues, Cole has been conditioned for many years to never question what was asked of him, with one difference : where Blues was made a servant, Cole was made a leader, greatly respected even by his superiors. Sharing his NetOp's strong sense of debt, honor and justice (and the unfortunate tendency to interchange the three), they are never far from a Full Synchro, which is where their strength stems from in addition to Cole's natural abilities. Cole hardly ever shows emotion, both from natural stoicism and his experience as a soldier, but it's said children may get beneath his steely exterior, starting with Iris - with whom he shares a deep connection despite being practically estranged from.
His codename was bestowed upon him by Lord Wily.

For you and Shanka’s date tonight, may I suggest a private area on the beach, having a little picnic. But if that’s too much, maybe a date on top of a rooftop where nobody will bother you. Or maybe you can go to an art gallery, makes the scenery more beautiful. I don’t know these just a few ideas I have had in my mind.
Hm. Yeah. Thanks for the ideas I guess.

Book 7/24: Last Argument of Kings by Joe Abercrombie Rating: 3.25/5
And with that, I have officially finished The First Law trilogy!
I’ve never read a book series quite like this before. Typically, the first book stands alone and the middle books have self-contained narratives with some unresolved plot elements. Abercrombie fully committed to telling one story spanning three books. In some ways, this concept is successful. I felt compelled to finish the whole series because I wanted the full picture, including payoff for plot elements set up very early in the series. However, by the third book, that early setup is also a weakness. By laying groundwork for events in the third book in earlier installments and then occasionally reminding the reader about them Abercrombie gives the reader a lot of time to figure things out. Some developments are anticipated long in advance and the actual reveal falls a little flat. Tolomei comes to mind. Not everything needs to be a twist, but when the reader has the general shape of a mystery’s solution in mind hundreds of pages before, the answer has to provide something a little unexpected.
I think the waiting also tried my patience at times since the books are all 500+ pages, and occasionally it feels like Abercrombie is stalling so that he can time his climaxes correctly. There are chapters where the characters are like animals pacing their cages, making no forward progress in plot or personal development. However, I have mentioned in another series that war stories are not my favorite, so I may have been more impatient than the average reader during this last installment.
I dragged my feet through the Gurkish conflict, but once that was resolved the book’s wrap up went by quickly enough. Overall, I enjoyed the earlier portions of the book and the last hundred pages. I complained about characters being used to fill pages for timing purposes, but I still enjoyed reading where each one ended up and the changes or stagnation they underwent. Logen’s looped story, Glokta finally answering his “Why do I do this?,“ and Jezal confirming that yes, his spine is a non-Newtonian fluid were all fitting and satisfying conclusions. Some things still fell by the wayside, making me wonder if they will crop up in other books. Ferro just kind of leaves and the Shanka concern is all but forgotten. But Ardee finally got to stop pacing that cage and have a change in her life, which I’m happy about. I’m not totally clear on the nature of the Bloody Nine even now. I might write a separate post about it.
Anyways, I think this series is flawed but interesting and I’m not sorry I read it. I would actually like to read more of Abecrombie’s work, because although he did not fully deliver, there’s something about his writing that speaks to a capacity to tell a really good story. I’m going to take a break from his writing, but if anybody has suggestions for what book of his to read next, let me know!

'The Blade Itself' --A Review
Tumblr media
Joe Abercrombie is another fantasy author that's been on my radar for quite some time and I'm only just now getting around to breaking into The First Law Trilogy with its first volume, The Blade Itself.
The book opens with Logen Ninefingers running from enemies known as The Shanka somewhere in the mountains of the far north. His companions are dead. He's alone. He's fighting for his life and he goes over a cliff and into a river and then we're off and running. Ninefingers has quite a reputation as the most feared man in the North and after double-checking to make sure his companions are dead. (Turns out, they're not, but they seem to be from Logen's point of view.) He decides to head south to consult with the spirits and see what to do next. They tell him to seek out Bayaz, First of the Magi.
Across the sea in the Agriont, we meet Jezal Luthar, Major West, and Sand Din Glokta, an Inquisitor, and get our introduction to the government of the Union. Luthar is gearing up for the annual Contest to prove how good of a fencer he is. West is assisting him and dealing with the arrival of his free-spirited and rebellious sister, Ardee. Glokta- who was tortured and crippled by the Emperor of the Gurkish as an Inquisitor doing the bidding of his masters, unearthing corruption and trying to navigate competing political agendas and discovering what they all mean.
Logen eventually finds Bayaz and the First of the Magi reveals his plan: they are to travel across the sea to the Agriont, the warn them not only of the impending invasion of Angland from the North, thanks to the self-proclaimed Northern King Bethod (who has had some run-ins with Logen before). Bayaz has his own plans, which are slowly revealed throughout the rest of the book.
Everyone gradually comes together in the Agriont, where the plans of Bayaz are at last revealed, where war is threatening the Union on two fronts (in the north where Bethod is invading Angland) and in the South where the Gurkish Empire is preparing to move against the Union in Dagoshka. Many people believe Bayaz to be a fraud, but he gathers a company- including Jezal Dan Luthar, Logen, Maljinn, his assistant Quai, and the Navigator Longfoot and a mission to go and confront an ancient evil behind the power of The Eaters.
Overall: So, the word on my particular street before I read this book was that Abercrombie was great with fight and action scenes, and great with dialogue, but people could take or leave his prose overall. I can understand where people are coming from with the fight and action scenes- really great, tight, taut writing that moves at the right speed and keeps the pages turning. His dialogue is also really, really great I love how the characters interact with one another and more importantly, how distinct their voices/personalities are and how they develop throughout the book. His prose...
I don't see the criticism of his prose. It didn't bother me at all-- if anything, you could argue that he's got a very visual writing style that would make translating this book to a graphic novel really easy. (Actually, I might check and see if that's been done yet because it seems like low-hanging fruit just sitting there for the taking, as it were and for sure if Netflix or Amazon or a movie studio comes calling this would be a no-brainer to adapt.)
Halfway through this book, I was worried were getting into Rothfuss territory-- it was interesting and felt like it was going somewhere, but I was starting to worry that the payoff wasn't going to be worth the trouble, despite the excellent characters/dialogue/fight scenes. Happily, it comes together very nicely- and in a nice touch, you get to see the characters react to meeting one other in a very genuine way. So Logen, from Jezal's point of view is just this big, hulking Northerner he gets stuck with at first. Similarly, when Maljinn arrives from the South- she is sneering at 'the pinks', because she doesn't yet know them. It's a small, subtle thing, I know, but I noticed it and I really liked it. It was a nice touch seeing how they meet each other from opposing POVs.
I don't know if it brings anything particularly new to the table, genre-wise, but then again, it doesn't have to! The world-building is simple and not complicated. Abercrombie drops you right into the story with a bang and keeps things rolling throughout. It wasn't a chore to read by any stretch of the imagination and I was *this* close to jumping right into the next volume just to keep on going.
My Grade: **** out of **** Fast, funny, compelling characters, wicked bloody fun this was a great read. Will absolutely check out the next two volumes.

Lord Vishnu Sri Chennakeshava Temple, Turuvekere, Karnataka
Panduranga Sharma B wrote : Sri Chennakeshava temple is a ekakuta temple built by Somanna Dannayaka - a general under the reign of Hoysala King Narasimha III. During the time of Hoysalas, Turuvekere was a prominent Agrahara named Sarvajna Vijaya Narasimhapuri.
The temple faces east and has Mukhamantapa, Navaranga Antarala and Garbhagriha. Like other Hoysala temples this temple too stands on a star shaped Jagati (Platform). It is a fine example of Bhumija style of architecture.
The beautiful vigraha of Chennakeshava inside the garbhagriha is carved out of Krishnashila (black stone) and stands on a Garuda peetha (pedestal). Chennakeshava holds Shanka and Chakra in his back hands, while in his front holds he holds Padma and Gadha. There are miniature carvings of Vishnu's Dashavatars on the prabhavali.

'I can't see anything!' he hissed, hearing his own voice full of panic. 'I can't… where are you?' He flailed at the air with his open hands, all sense of direction gone, his heart pounding, his stomach sick and heaving. What if she'd left him down there, the evil bitch? What if—
'Here.' He felt her hand catch hold of his and close round it, cool and reassuring. He heard her voice not far from his ear. 'You think you can follow me without falling on your face, fool?'
'I… I think so.'
'Just try to keep quiet!' And he felt her move off, pulling him impatiently after her.
If only the old crew could've seen him now. Logen Ninefingers, the most feared man in the North, piss-wet frightened of the dark, clinging tight to the hand of a woman who hated him, like a child clinging to his mother's tit. He might almost have laughed out loud. But he was scared the Shanka would hear.
▪︎
Ninefingers' big paw felt hot, clammy with fear. An unpleasant sensation, his sticky skin pressed tight against hers. Sickening, almost, but Ferro made herself hold on. She could hear his breathing, quick and snatched in the tight space, his clumsy footsteps stumbling after her.
It felt like only yesterday that the two of them were last in a fix like this one, hurtling down the lanes of the Agriont, sneaking through its darkened buildings, chased all the way. It felt like yesterday, but everything had changed.
Back then, he had seemed nothing but a threat. One more pink that she would have to keep her eye on. Ugly and strange, stupid and dangerous. Back then, he might easily have been the last man in the world she would have trusted. Now he might easily have been the only one. He had not let her fall, even though she had told him to. He had chosen to fall with her rather than let her go. Out there on the plain, he had said he would stick if she did.
Now he had proved it.

Will Lord Hanuman be as devoted to Lord Kalki as he was to Lord Rama?
once during ramayana , when rama killed ravana and was going to ayodhya , shree rama looked at pavan putra and told him that , after some days i have to leave this body and go to vaikuntha , you also come with me :)
then hanuman ji replied , prabhu if you are there in vaikuntha , i will come with you…then sree rama told , i will be there in vaikuntha but with shanka , chakra , gadha , padma in my chathurbhuja roop , with mata seeta ( lakshmi ) on my left and will sleep on adi shesha… then hanumanji told he wont come because he wants only rama….then shree raama told what will you do then ? pavan putra told that he will stay on earth as long as rama naama will be heard , and will stay with people who chant rama nama
from this incident we can understand that hanuman ji likes sri hari in his two handed form with a bow only !!
so , he will definitely help kalki bhagwan but will ask shri kalki ji to show his rama form and kalki dev will surely do it…

CHAPTER 1 Trinidad and Tobago lie at the northeastern corner of Venezuela from which it is separated by the Gulf of Pariah. It is the most southerly link of that beautiful chain of islands, which form a curved line starting at the top of the Florida Peninsula to the mouth of the Orinoco River called the West Indies. The island of Trinidad is rectangular in shape. It is 50 miles long and 37 miles wide, with a surface area of 1,863 square miles. The highest range of mountains, in the north, crosses the width of the island from Galena Point to Dragon’s Mouth. The only two clearly marked breaks in the hills are Tucker Valley and Diego Martin Valley. It is in Diego Martin Valley that Mother Dora, The Obeah Woman, lives. She is like a mother to all the people in Simian Village, for she brought 99% of them into this world. She cares for them with her healing herbs and she is there for them in times of trouble. No one knows how old Mother Dora is. To look at her, one would say she is in her late fifties. She stands about five foot six inches and weighs one hundred and sixty pounds. Her head is tied up in a bright red and white floral head wrap which is the same pattern as her dress. She pulls her black shawl about her shoulders, and takes her medicine basket in her hand. It is the dry season, and the Trade Winds are blowing through the trees as she steps out of her house. The smell of her garden always brings a smile to her face. She walks around to the back of her house, quickly picking a few fresh herbs for her basket. Now she is ready and it is time. She places her basket on her head and walks briskly along the path that leads to Simian Village. As she walks, the wind swirls about her kissing her cheeks and tugging at her skirts like an impatient lover. She smiles and sang a love song to the Great Spirit in the wind. The dirt road turns sharply to the right. She walked quickly as she approached the house of Shanka, a Portuguese man whose wife was in her eighth month of pregnancy. It was after midnight, and all the lights in the house were on. She could hear the cries of Shanka’s wife, Gloria, in pain. She heard Shanka’s mother-in-law saying, “Shanka, you’ve got to get Mother Dora! She will know what to do! It’s all too soon!” “You have four more weeks yet!” Mother Dora stood outside the door. It swung open and the tall man stared into her smiling face with deep astonishment. She walked forward and touched his shoulder. “It will be alright.” She said, as she walked past him into the house. 5 “Hot coals!” she commanded to Shanka’s mother-in-law, Edna, who leaped to her feet and ran outside to the still shouldering fire pit. She put some of the coals into a flat pan and brought them to Mother Dora. The house had two bedrooms, a living room and a kitchen. Mother Dora put incense on the hot coals. Soon, the whole house was full of smoke. Then she started to sing as she opened all the windows and doors of the house. She then took a white bottle from her basket and poured its contents in a wooden bowl. Finally, she sprinkled the house and everyone in it, with a bundle of fresh herbs. Shanka sat on his living room sofa, holding his two sons. Jessie the oldest, was six. Martin was two. Edna sat on the bed, trying to comfort her daughter. “It’s alright girl. Mother Dora is here.” Somehow, she knew to come just now.” She wet her daughter’s forehead with a damp cloth. Dora took a small black bottle from her basket. She held it firmly as she walked over to the southwest corner of the bedroom. She stood facing the corner as though standing in front of a person. “You get out from here right now!” she commanded in a low, hard voice, as cold as water in a cellar. “I know Cocoka sent you and I know why, but you ain’t going to succeed here tonight. So get out! Get out now!! I say GO!!! She walked around the room sprinkling the content of the bottle on some invisible person. Then she closed all the windows and doors and started singing again as she put the contents of the black bottle on the doors and windows. Next, she anointed the foreheads of every person in the house with blessed oil. “Now, we must stop these labor pains, “she poured the content of a blue bottle into a clay mug and handed it to Edna. “She got to drink all this.” Edna took the mug and fed the drink to Gloria, who was still crying out from her pains. Dora placed two lighted white candles on the floor on each side of the bed, and then she placed one lighted blue candle at the foot of the bed. Then she placed the pan of hot coals next to the candle, and burned the fresh herbs on them. The smoke perfumed the air as Dora sat up in front of the candle, singing, with her medicine basket next to her on the floor. She looked at Gloria on the bed, whose cries became a low moan, showing that the pain was subsiding. Edna was wiping her daughter’s forehead when a loud bang from someone, or something, hit the roof of the house. 6 Shanka ran into the bedroom, a look of horror on his face. Edna and Gloria clung to each other in terror. The sounds of scraping and scratching as if something with long claws was trying to scratch a hole through the galvanized roof. Gloria screamed again. Dora stood to her feet and intercepted Shanka as he rushed towards his wife. “You broke your contract with Cocoka, didn’t you? “Now she wants revenge!” Shanka looked with astonishment into the gray, piercing eyes of Mother Dora. He opened his mouth to confirm her statements, but no sound came from his lips. He only nodded his head as tears fell from his eyes. Gloria was now howling in pain. Dora rushed to her, took a necklace of multicolored stones from around her neck and placed them on Gloria. They stopped her screams instantly. Panting heavily and placing her hands on her belly, Gloria cried between breaths, “The child…., the child is coming!” Dora rushed to her basket and took out a red root. “Eat this!” Gloria ate the gnarled plant with haste. Dora placed her hands on the woman’s belly and said, “STOP!” “Stop Now! It is not yet time! Wait a little bit longer.” With these words, the pains stopped. Gloria looked at the woman whose hands had brought her and her two children into this world. “Thank you, Mother,” she whispered. The gentle woman smiled at her and wiped away her tears. “This child will not come before her time, nor will she die.” She smiled at Gloria reassuringly. Suddenly, screams came from the living room. “Stay here with her.” Dora said to Edna, as she and Shanka ran to find the two boys doubled in pain. “Go bring my basket.” Shanka rushed back to the bedroom as Dora Scooped his sons into her arms and held them to her. Shanka brought the basket and placed it before the woman on the floor. “You are a damn fool, Shanka!” He glared at her, not knowing how to respond. Her eyes blazed with anger. “You were a fool first of all to go to Cocoka, and even a bigger fool to sell her you’re first born, and for what?” “I was desperate,” he shouted. “She gave me the money I needed for my shop! I had to make a life for my family!” “Money, money! It’s always money!” she howled at him. “Give me that little black bag,” she pointed with her head and eyes to the basket. Shanka handed her the little black bag. 7 She set the boys on the floor in front of her. Then she made a circle around the man and his sons. “You stay here in this circle and do not move until I come back inside.” The boys stopped crying as they held onto their father. The scratching on the roof became louder and more intensified. Dora reached into her basket and took out three small black stones and spoke some words to them in pattwa. After this, she left the house, locking the door behind her. All around was still and heavy. She could feel the evil presence of Cocoka the Sukkunya, the witch of black magical arts. She held her body erect and walked a little way from the house. Standing straight and still, she turned and looked at the rooftop. In the light of the moon she saw her. It was Lilith! A horrible winged demon with sharp claws on her feet. She was scratching at the tin plates of the roof, moving in a circle, in a horrible rage. Dora opened her hand. One of the stones rose out of her hand and flew towards the demon. The stone turned into a blaze of fire as it flew through the dark. The horrible form was struck under her right wing and she let out a great screech. She turned and looked at Dora, only to see another fireball coming. The ball hit the demon square on the back as it tried to avoid the attack, it ripped off a piece of roofing, howling in agony. “You tell Cocoka that I have put my seal on this house and she must deal with me now.” The Last fireball struck the demon on the butt as it flew into the night, screaming. Shanka sat on the floor, sobbing over his sons. He looked up with a start as Mother Dora re-entered the house. “You are right, Mother,” he said, weeping and rocking his sons back and forth in his arms. “I am a fool I can’t believe I have done this horrible thing. What was I thinking of?” “Money!!! Snarled Dora. “You were so blinded by the idea of having your own shop and all the money it could bring you, that all Cocoka had to do was put the idea of what she wanted into your head and you were willing to give it. But, the witch didn’t count on me getting involved in all of this.” Mother Dora walked past him and went into the bedroom. Gloria just went off to sleep, just like that, once the screaming stopped outside. “What was that sound?” Edna asked, as she pulled the cover over her daughter’s still body. Dora did not answer. “I will go and put the boys to bed, if it is safe now.” Said Edna knowing not to push the issue. “Send Shanka in here,” Dora said sternly. 8 When the man stumbled into the room, Dora was gathering her things. “Look at her,” Dora said to him, as she pulled him to the bed. “She is a beautiful black woman and she loves you very much. Now you are basically a good man, Shanka, and you have a beautiful family. Now, because of your stupidity, you almost lost them all tonight. Just remember this, young man. If you ever do something his asinine ever again, believe me, you’re going to deal with it yourself.” Dora then sat with Gloria for a few hours to make sure she was alright. She then left Shanka’s house. She took four small stones from her basket, spoke to them and buried them in the ground at the four corners of the house. Then placing her basket on her head she set out down the path for home. The sky was purple in the east, and a few of the stars could still be seen in the west, as the dawn of a new day greeted the Valley. The air was cold and chill, and she pulled her black shawl around her as she walked briskly along the dirt road. She knew that her lifelong enemy, Cocoka, now had one more reason to hate her. Mother Dora would have to battle the evil Sukkunya again, and soon. The fragrant smell of her garden greeted her and the dew on the rose bushes lining the path to her house look like diamonds in the first dawn light. She smiles as she walks by them into her house. She will turn in now and rest in the beauty of her home, for in her heart, she knows, that soon she must face Cocoka and pay the reckoning for the broken contract. (WANT MORE OF THE STORY?
