2022 YEAR ROUNDUP: FAVORITE MANGA READ IN 2022

Another year of catching up on what I bought for myself the years before, among those (+ some purchases from this year) were:

銀河鉄道の夜 (Night on The Galactic Railroad) by Hiroshi Masumura based on the short story by Kenji Miyazawa [Kaiseisha, hardcover ver]

お父さんは心配症 (Otousan wa Shinpaishou) by Aamin Okada [Shuseisha, bunko ver]

ホット・ロード (Hot Road) by Taku Tsurugi [Shueisha, bunko ver]

鉄風 (Teppu) by Moare Oota [Kodansha]

蒼い柘榴 (Aoi Zakuro) by Riyoko Ikeda [Shueisha, bunko ver]

サプリ (Suppli) by Mari Okazaki [Shodensha]

Shuna’s Journey by Hayao Miyazaki [First Second, trans. Alex Dudok De Wit]

How Do We Relationship? by Tamifull [Viz Media, trans. Abby Lehrke]

This year I was able to read some series I’ve wanted to read for a long time now, like Suppli, Hot Road, and Teppu. All of which are romances to me. Hot Road explore friendship and romance as a vector for personal growth and destruction. And Teppu explores how its kinda gay for you as a girl to want to beat the shit out of another girl (within the rules of the sport). 

Then on the recurring topic of toxic families: Otousan wa Shinpaishou is one of the most violent, dysfunctional, and unhinged slapstick gag manga I’ve read and I had a great time!!! Had a more stressful but intrigued time reading Ikeda’s (at the time) contemporary adult dramas, of which there are no words for its very unlike everything else I’ve read by her and left a deep impression.

The more literary experiences were Masumura’s adaption of Night On The Galactic Railroad by Kenji Miyazawa, and Miyazaki’s original Shuna’s Journey (A 2022 release that didn’t fit into the list U_U).  Both has an almost mythical quality to them, Shuna especially as it mainly uses narration over dialogue and is the first Miyazaki work I personally felt pretty moved by. I already talked a bit about Masamura’s adaption in the February roundup so I’ll just say that I don’t know how many Night On The Galactic Railroad adaption I will experience in my lifetime but none of them will feel right if they don’t depict the characters as cats. And How Do We Relationship is like literature to me. It’s just a constant barrage of surprises. I haven’t read anything else that explores the course of two people’s relationship like this before and I’m always looking forward to what will happen in each volume!!

В этой антологии молодой человек исполняет заветное желание волшебной снежной принцессы, двое незнакомцев борются за выживание в апокалиптическом мире - и друг друга, жертва хулигана находит утешение в сети с виртуальным собеседником, ментально нездоровая девушка создает своим воображением сталкера, женщина, перенесшая обширную косметическую операцию, узнает правду о том, что такое настоящая красота, а вампир наконец видит прекрасное голубое небо благодаря маленькой девочке.

Написанные и проиллюстрированные Мицукадзу Михарой, шесть рассказов о красивых людях были опубликованы в сборнике Танкобон издательством Shodensha в 2001 году. А я купила этот сборник в секонде всего за 1$ о чём ни секунды не пожалела, потому что я люблю истории в стиле джосей, хотя несомненно рисовка здесь на любителя. Но сразу видны довольно старые иллюстрации и на мангаку явно повлияло течение стиля готических лолит и харажуку стрит фэшн.

“Onna no Sono no Hoshi” The Manga For Bundles OVA

According to an announcement made by publishing house Shodensha, the Onna no Sono no Hoshi (Hoshi of Girls' Garden) josei manga will be adapted into an original video animation. On December 8, the third limited edition volume with the Blu-ray disc will be available for purchase.
