My sleeping mind had met an impasse and required my consciousness' intervention: so I was awoken in the middle of the night thinking the relation of the villainess genre to isekai.
The villainess genre: clearly an evolution of the isekai genre — but how does one deduce the villainess genre from isekai? It seems like there must be introduced an external element? — the otome game. But, wait a moment: what is the typical structure of an isekai? It is the 'harem', is it not?; and what is its opposite — or better — its feminine counterpart? The conveniently named, 'reverse harem'. Is not this the structure of our otome game? — and we have, therefore, no need of the external element (for we have now even its ground).
But a step further: why is there the tendency for the heroine to fall in love with the villainess (and or vice versa)? If we reconsider the harem and reverse harem, we recognise that the two are really only gender swapped versions of each other, and therefore no sexual difference at all. The masculine/feminine opposition is not symmetrical (not rational-irrational, order-chaos, light-darkness, et cetera). What then would be the truly feminine in the villainess (isekai) genre? The logic is thus: we must locate the exception and raise it to the rule.
What is our exception? Well, among the various characters it is clear that the 'capture targets' are homogenous — the abstractly universal — but the villainess sticks out, stands in the way, disrupts the smooth functioning of what would be an otherwise idyllic romance or harem. (It is basically a reactionary fantasy then, when she is done away with at the end to form the couple or undisrupted 'order'). Except, now let us take this out-standing element and raise her herself to the rule.
What is our rule? What is the law? — that which dictates the action, drives things — that upon which the 'world turns' — is it not clear that this is Love? The narrative moves forward of love: form the couple, capture the target. It is the end which all is thus moved towards (its teleology). And who was the criminal here? Who broke the law? She who disrupted the good functioning of our moral order?
It is clear now that to elevate the exception to the status of the law means to fall in love with the villainess.
Have we found the end of isekai? We have demonstrated the truly feminine in the 'female' side of the isekai genre; but we found that the female side was not truly 'feminine' by itself: it is easy to imagine what the masculine version of the villainess genre would be: a villainess story which plays out as a simple reverse harem. However, what would be the feminine version of the 'male' side, the isekai genre itself? — What does this world look like when Exception is the Rule? — Does it have a name? — Shokei Shoujo no Ikirumichi (Virgin Road)?
Footnotes:
(1) The logic:
A -> ~A -> ~~A
Isekai -> non-isekai (villainess) -> not non-isekai (non or anti-villainess)
masculine isekai -> feminine isekai -> feminine' isekai (or, the isekai as such)
The first negation is a (failed) transformation of the masculine power fantasy in isekai into its feminine version. This involves simply swapping the content — genders (the male protagonist is now a woman, and the members of the harem are now male). It is shown up, however, that this negation is insufficient, the genre being merely an inversion of appearances and no real change at all, and the opposition false. In the second negation: the villainess genre, the female isekai, is negated again. This negation is internal to the genre, as it is a turning upside down, or inside-out, of the existing structure of the world (the 'harem'); in this second negation, the feminine does not return back to the masucline, but is seen to be insufficient of itself: the solution is to redoubled the thing on itself, which is just the feminine redoubled, and brings out, as such, the True (which would be the truth of the isekai genre itself, or is the true isekai).
The entire field is now sublated, and the final turn is to show the first term with this truth reflected into it. Now we have two oppositions: the first is masculine-feminine, but is distinguished by the harem/reverse harem, which is only a superficial change of appearances and maintains the same structure which is itself masculine on either side; the second is an immanent inversion of the structure itself. We could say that the opposition is the same — masculine-feminine — but the terms now operate on an entirely different level, and both, in fact, are feminine. Personally, I find all stories on this side to be of much greater worth, more interesting: the anti-isekai.
(Besides Shokei Shoujo no Ikirumichi, another example of the 'anti-isekai', perhaps, would be The Onee-sama and the Giant).
Some general indications of the internal logic:
i) The masculine logic is the opposition of rule and its (founding) exception: 'all x is y', along with, 'some x is not y'. ii) The feminine logic is the exception as the rule: more clearly perhaps, it is the state of things such that 'there is nothing which is not an exception', or, 'no x is not y'. The achievement of the second negation (from ~A to ~~A) is the movement from i) to ii).
(2) The politics:
A curious phenomenon: the villainess genre, as a rule, features a strong class element (nobles vs commoners) — the contradiction of which is embodied in the villainess and heroine themselves; whereas the mode of political intervention in standard (masculine) isekai is the individual (the man) versus the world, usually tasked with defeating the 'Demon Lord', the embodiment of some vague concept of evil. Here the only change actual in the world is the result of the singular actions of the Hero; in the villainess genre, any change of the world usually (as it follows naturally from the structure of the world) occurs, or is at least anticipated, as the result of collective action (and the model for this change is typically the French Revolution). The logic here is also of the internal negation, as opposed to the logic of the external negation in a narrative of good against some outside invading evil, such as is present in standard isekai. — All the glory, of course, to the feminine side.
To praise Shokei Shoujo no Ikirumichi again: the political structure there is a triad of aristocracy, church and commoners — a first second and third estate (again, echoes of the Revolution). Our protagonist is in the church, and the evil is located inside. Nice and theoretically sound.
Addendum:
The 'Demon Lord' in masculine isekai clearly occupies the position of the exception. The standard arc involves this exception being suppressed, and the phantasy is ultimately that it is done away with (i.e., defeated — whereafter, the story, conspicuously, ends). We may be tempted to recognise those stories which see the Hero having the Demon King as their love object to be the same movement as described above in the villainess genre which was the real transition to the feminine logic; however, if the narrative is yet structured by the masculine, this operation must be a simple incorporation of the villain (demon king) as one among the series of members in the harem: the indication of this? — we would expect the repressed exception to return elsewhere, and the narrative would be plagued with symptoms thereof (typically, perhaps, there must simply arise another 'Demon Lord', i.e., a substitution — the most obvious candidate being the 'good' king who charged the Hero with slaying the Demon Lord in the first place — but there are many more subtle manifestations possible). For the change to be real, it must occur in the very form: the form which is imperceptible on the level of the immediate, manifest content.
(3) The perspective:
There seems to be a reason for reversing the perspective: not to be from the standpoint of the good, but from the standpoint of the evil (the villain). We can speculate that this is because it does the work of reflecting the other upon itself (ourself) by its mere fact: effectively establishing an equality of otherness between the 'villainess' (who recognises herself as such, as other) and the heroine (who is othered by being simply 'an other' from this perspective) — this equality which is the condition of possibility of love. Though perhaps not necessary (the heroine may recognise the otherness of herself from her own perspective), it is at least narratively expedient, and seems to render the story more interesting and dynamic. Of course, on the other end, there may be a falsification and domestication of the villainess: that is, if she were to recognise herself as a mere 'self'. In this case, the reversal of perspective has achieved nothing at all, and all is harmonious once more.

Mangadex went down so I read alot 2/7
Lets CONTINUE reviewing a bunch of isekai and related stuff I binged because mangadex went down. The scale will be a single thumbs up to a single thumbs down in terms of how much I would consider recommending it in general. Lot more to come, brace yourself future me who is reading this.
The Reincarnation Magician Of The Inferior Eyes
Tumblr media
Chapters 1-55
This manga is FUCKING SHOCKING. [Insert reincarnation setup] but this time it is end tier level generic. I actually cannot believe the things that happen in this manga are so utterly within my prediction range. Calling the plot and characters lazy would not give this enough credit. It takes alot of force of will to produce something so utterly generic, devoid of spirit, bereft of theme and lacking in interesting setting. I keep reading only to be shocked SHOCKED at how basic the next fuckin plot point is. HOW FAR CAN THIS GO?!?! It is maddening. THUMBS DOWN.
The Reincarnation Magician Of The Inferior Eyes (Prequel)
Tumblr media
Chapters 1-21
I cannot believe this. How is there a prequel. How is it even worse. Is this a test? Did Cthulu write this to drive me insane? HOW IS THERE A PREQUEL. This must be a personal attack. Who asked for this. Why.
Revival Game of Wandering Reincarnations
Tumblr media
Chapters 1-20
Hmmm. This manga’s concept actually comes together and manages to have emotional highs and lows in a short amount of time. Where it doesn’t connect with me is how every arc completion in this ends with some plot-direction altering revelation about the world that its hard to grasp the theme. Its the best its concept allows I guess. THUMB SIDEWAYS.
Do You Think Someone Like You Could Defeat the Demon Lord?
Tumblr media
Chapters 1-8.
THUMBS SIDEWAYS. Biggest problem here is how little is translated. Great trajectory, bad total amount of content. Gorey story of a former hero tricked into slavery by an evil member of the hero’s party. Using the knowledge she got there and her skill to reverse effects, she fights for a daily life with her new maid friend. Edgy dark and sweet yuri mix.
Start a leisurely lord life with a plant magic cheat After farming with the knowledge of the previous life, a reversal life began
Tumblr media
Chapters 1-7
[Insert isekai startup here] but this time its about growing a town with MC’s OP plant growing magic. Nothing too interesting here, just slice of life slow town building. THUMB SIDEWAYS.
The Principle of a Philosopher by Eternal Fool "Asley"
Tumblr media
Chapters 1-41
[Insert reincarnation setup] but this time he didn’t actually die, just hikki researched for waaay too long. 5000 years too long. He drank an immortality potion he accidentally made, so old age can’t kill him(he can only die when killed.) Firstly, the story has got alot of chapters which means it clearly goes through multiple arcs and scenarios that allow the grand narrative to start coming into perspective and show how the MC is going for it. Most notable thing about this is how much a comedy duo The Fool Asley and his Trusty Dog Pochi make. It is every chapter, sometimes hit or miss, so you have to be braced for constant back-and-forth comedy acts. For a reincarnation-esque series, Astley is not overpowered for the world. Or at least he really does not want to show off what he can do and has invented himself willy nilly. It is really interesting to see how he self-describes himself as an idiot and he is slow to learn and talentless, his only real advantage being his massive age. As long as you can take the comedy antics and the sometimes iffy art, THUMBS UP.
Exceeding limits can only be handled by reincarnated people
Tumblr media
Chapters 1-5.
Absolutely wild start, even though its isekai. THUMBS UP. For at least the first chapter. Skills in this world are mineable ores and each person only has 8 skill slots. Then of course the MC equips an ability that needed 10 slots. Story outside the inciting incident is cute shotasekai stuff. But damn chapter 1 pops off.
Saikyou Juzoku Tensei: Majutsu Otaku no Risoukyou
Tumblr media
Chapters 1-20
So [insert isekai startup here] but this time the MC’s clan uses totems to teach magic, therefore MC mostly uses totem magic. Alot of this series is made up of weird ideas like that and the biggest hook I saw is the chapter 6 stinger of the clan having its siblings marry, the MC obviously hating it and running away, and the YOOOO part of his little sister being a yandere out to fuck him. Surprisingly interesting. THUMBS UP.
Shadow Hero's Daily Life
Tumblr media
Chapters 1-10
Displays and goes through the positivity in seeking revenge. One of the best complete expressions of the theme of “revenge” that I have ever read. A THUMBS UP based on that alone.
The Abandoned Hero is Going Home
Tumblr media
Chapters 1-6
THUMBS DOWN. Eh. Not worth reading based on its incompleteness and hiatus.
Shokei Shoujo no Ikirumichi
Tumblr media
Chapters 1-12
A well thought out world and story about an isekai slayer *coughcoughfuckisekaicheatslayercoughcough*. The world exists such that the isekai’d are many(relatively speaking) and are on a variable scale from good to bad. The only consistency about them being that their skills eventually grow out of control and instantiate nuclear-tier catastraphoes. So the MC is part of a group that assassinates them, before they know whats happening. Good depictions of present, past, and expectations of how the MC will grow given the recent isekai’d girl she meets and has to travel with because she can’t be killed by normal means. Also touches on how the assassins don’t neccessarily see themselves as good people. Some even see themselves as evil. THUMBS UP. Oh yeah also this is a yuri story so its anime as fuck and adorable.
Even Though I'm a Former Noble and a Single Mother, My Daughters Are Too Cute and Working as an Adventurer Isn’t Too Much of a Hassle
Tumblr media
Chapters 1-8
Cute concept, but its kinda only it’s concept so far. Mom is a god tier semi-immortal and fights for her daughters. Maybe the revelation of mysteries later will be interesting but, its exactly as the title says. THUMBS SIDEWAYS.
Vermeil in Gold
Tumblr media
Chapters 1-9
Gotta love these oneshota manga. Good design sense, really love Captain Kurys. Vermeil is shamelessly lewd and secretly tragic. This is a story that is going on constantly despite oneshota shenanigans every chapter. su-perb. THUMBS UP.
Ragna Crimson
Tumblr media
Chapters 1-40
THUMBS UP. This manga is absolutely wild. It has 4 different scenarios, each which are so radically different in setting and then they just flip out into a totally different setting, making it impossible to predict the trajectory of the manga or what kind of arc will happen next. The only thing worth describing here is the MC with big himbo that is beqeauthed power from his future self in order to protecc his loli this time. Thusly, Ragna wants to kill every “dragon.” They say dragon, its more like vampires. Then there is Crimson, one of the strongest dragons who wants to hunt the 12 elites, and then at the end have Ragna hunt him. Issue being Ragna hates Crimson, because Crimson is absolutely evil. More evil the 12 elites but also more pragmatic to reel it in. The power system of the world is simple and described well so fights make sense. The real most amazing part here is the art and the concept behind fights. Probably the BEST ART of any manga on this entire list. From silly cute gags like the MC’s head being a sword or tsundere love antics to Crimson’s face as he commits a warcrime. As for one of the many amazing fight portrayls I while mention a time where Ragna has to fight an enemy for NINE SECONDS. So the whole chapter takes place over 9 seconds and there is a countdown timer in every other panel. FUCKING SUGOII.

Manga the Week of 3/10/21
SEAN: Has anyone else run out of time to read things? You’d think I’d be reading MORE in a pandemic, but…
MICHELLE: I have run out of brain to read things.
ANNA: My non-work reading and writing have suffered.
ASH: It’s strange but true.
MELINDA: What is time?
SEAN: Airship has the print debut of Failure Frame: I Became the Strongest and Annihilated Everything With Low-Level Spells. Also in print is the second ROLL OVER AND DIE: I Will Fight for an Ordinary Life with My Love and Cursed Sword!, and digital-first gives us the 2nd Trapped in a Dating Sim: The World of Otome Games is Tough for Mobs.
Dark Horse has a 7th Deluxe Hardcover edition of Berserk.
ASH: It’s probably no surprise that I’ll be picking that up.
SEAN: Drawn & Quarterly has a biggie: the late Shigeru Mizuki’s adaptation of Tono Monogatari, a famous collection of folklore. It ran in Shogakukan’s Big Comic.
ASH: My recent brief doesn’t truly do it justice, but I love this book.
MELINDA: Ash is persuasive!
SEAN: No debuts for J-Novel Club, but a lot of new volumes of beloved series. We see Ascendance of a Bookworm 11, Bibliophile Princess 5, the 2nd manga volume of The Engagement of Marielle Clarac, Girls Kingdom 2, Infinite Dendrogram 14, the 5th manga volume of The Master of Ragnarok & Blesser of Einherjar, and Slayers 6.
ASH: Yay, Bookworm!
SEAN: Kaiten Books has a debut with Welcome to the Outcast’s Restaurant, a manga version of the light novel we’ve seen released here by Tentai Books. A strong adventurer, banished by his party, starts a restaurant, and has to deal with his customers’ varied issues.
ASH: There seems to be a surprising number of these types of restaurants.
SEAN: Kodansha has some print. There’s Grand Blue Dreaming 12, Rent-a-Girlfriend 5, Saint Young Men 5 (in hardcover omnibus), and the 14th and final Waiting for Spring.
MICHELLE: I’ve been waiting for Waiting for Spring‘s finale for ages!
ANNA: I have the first volume and I still haven’t read it!
ASH: I’ve liked what I’ve read of Waiting for Spring so far, but Saint Young Men has most of my attention from this batch.
MELINDA: Same here!
SEAN: For digital, the debut is Shaman King: Marcos, which runs in Shonen Magazine Edge, and is MORE SHAMAN KING.
Also digital: A Couple of Cuckoos 3, Ace of the Diamond 31, Peach Boy Riverside 5, Saint Young Men 10, Seven Shakespeares 15, and We Must Never Fall in Love 7.
MICHELLE: A baseball binge is in store for me!
SEAN: Seven Seas has two debuts. The first had an anime recently, and it’s called Super HxEros (Dokyuu Hentai HxEros). Despite the Japanese title, this isn’t quite porn, but it does run on fanservice. Aliens are sapping the world’s lust, and only superheroes who can use their own lust to power up can stop them. This runs in Jump Square, home of Blue Exorcist, believe it or not, and is 11+ volumes in Japan.
The other debut is Wonder Cat Kyuu-chan (Fushigi Neko no Kyuu-chan), a 4-koma about an office worker who finds an abandoned cat that proves to be… a wonder cat! This looks very cute.
ANNA: That does sound cute.
ASH: It does.
SEAN: Also from Seven Seas: Akashic Records of Bastard Magical Instructor 11, Arifureta: From Commonplace to World’s Strongest 6 (manga), Arpeggio of Blue Steel 17, Peter Grill and the Philosopher’s Time 4, The Ideal Sponger Life 8 (manga), The Saint’s Magic Power Is Omnipotent 2 (manga), and We Swore to Meet in the Next Life and That’s When Things Got Weird! 2.
SuBLime gives us Caste Heaven 5 and the 2nd and final volume of Toritan – Birds of a Feather.
MICHELLE: I need to check out Toritan. Caste Heaven was not for me.
ASH: I haven’t tried Caste Heaven yet, but I really liked the first volume of Toritan. I didn’t realize it was only two volumes long.
SEAN: Tokyopop has Katakoi Lamp, a BL title from Rutile. A young man working at a coffee shop falls for a customer, but can he work up the courage to confess?
They also have the 2nd volume of Ossan Idol!.
Vertical has a 9th volume of Flying Witch and a 3rd With a Dog AND a Cat, Every Day is Fun.
Viz has Tokyo Fashion: A Comic Book, an illustrated guide to building your wardrobe and looking good.
ASH: Oh, that could be interesting!
SEAN: We also have Fly Me to the Moon 4, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess 8, RIN-NE 38, and Splatoon: Squid Kids Comedy Show 3.
Yen On has a debut, with The Executioner and Her Way of Life (Shokei Shoujo no Ikirumichi), about a woman whose job it is to STOP isekai protagonists – they keep bringing chaos whenever they arrive! Unfortunately, the girl she meets may be more than she can handle. Nice seeing more yuri light novels.
ASH: That is kind of a delightful and cathartic twist to the isekai deluge. And it’s yuri, too? I may have to check it out!
SEAN: Yen On also has Combatants Will Be Dispatched! 5.
Three debuts from Yen Press. I Cannot Reach You (Kimi ni wa Todokanai) is a BL series from Media Factory’s Gene Pixiv, and is a childhood friend romance sort of story. It looks sweet.
MICHELLE: I’m really looking forward to this one!
ASH: Me, too!
MELINDA: Okay, yes, THIS.
SEAN: SEAN: Play It Cool, Guys (Cool Doji Danshi) runs in Square Enix’s Gangan Pixiv, and features a bunch of cool guys who are secretly… awkward dorks! This seems more on the funny side.
ASH: Could be fun!
SEAN: Penguin Gentlemen (Penguin Shinshi) is a done-in-one hardcover about a group of penguins who run a bar. Sometimes they’re drawn as penguins… and sometimes they’re drawn as buff hot guys. This ran in Kadokawa’s Pixiv Essay.
ANNA: This sounds hilarious.
ASH: It really does, in the best sort of way.
MELINDA: This sounds amazing.
SEAN: Lastly, Yen has Happy Sugar Life 8, I’ve Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years 5 (manga), Kakegurui Twin 9, and Restaurant to Another World 4.
What series are you falling more and more behind on?
MICHELLE: ALL OF THEM.
ANNA: SO MANY SERIES!
MELINDA: I REPEAT, WHAT IS TIME?
