DIY BIKE LANES AND SIDE WALKS ARE MUTUAL AID. Our streets and sidewalks are not wide enough for safe social distancing. Now would be a good time for either permanent open streets in busy corridors and creative space making ideas like diy bike lanes and curb side space for pedestrians, drop offs/pick ups for people to safely cycle, walk, and delivering goods.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ DIY tactical urbanism has always been a response to our cities not responding to space and mobility needs while prioritizing vehicle movement and parking over human movement by foot and bike. If cities cannot provide us with safe and open streets to practice social distancing during #COVID19, then we must take things in our own hands.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ All you need: masking tape/heavy duty paint/spray paint, safety gear, 2-3 friends, a righteous vigilant spirit (stencil, brushes, cones, brooms optional)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ You risk: angry car drivers, vandalism charges. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In our link in profile we're sharing "Tactical Urbanist's Guide to Materials and Design" pdf to provide you with tools to get you started. Imagine how much pedestrian and cycling space we would have if parking was moved over a lane... IMAGINE!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Photo Via Twitter California Sun #cyclistazine #mobilityjustice #bikeequity #criticalmass #resistance #cycling #shredthepartriarchy #bikingdiversity #streetsafety #bikemessenger #mutualaid #messengers #fooddelivery #gigeconomy #peopleoverprofit #solocycling #ridesolo #socialdistancing #transit #safestreets https://www.instagram.com/p/B-IeKtmpHpY/?utm_medium=tumblr

"Transit planners and policy makers are embracing cycling for its many benefits, from easing congestion and reducing carbon emissions to improving air quality and individual health; yet most cities are still dominated by the system of motorized automobility (even the most “cycle-friendly” European cities). This gap between aims and outcomes occurs because cycling policies are necessarily entangled with deeper questions about cities and citizenship, spatial justice and mobility justice. Modes of transport are part of complex constellations of material movement, cultural meanings, competencies and social practices all of which are deeply shaped by historical patterns of racialized, sexed, classed, and gendered status and power. Especially in “white settler” societies grounded in coloniality, we cannot escape the politics of infrastructure, part of a wider “kinopolitics” (politics of movent) involving the struggles for mobility justice through which political subjects are mobilized. . Recent urban social movements in several North American cities have criticized active transport and new mobility policies (including the implementation of bike share, bike lanes, and Vision Zero) for their exclusionary effects. Through more equitable practices of community-based, anti-racist, women-led, and LGBTQ-friendly cycling advocacy, these movements shift attention away from bicycling solely as transport, and focus more on the role of cycling in building health, supporting local economies and community, and strengthening frayed social infrastructure. Cycling advocates are making space for thinking about reparative justice, racial justice, and gender and sexual equity, as crucial to advancing post-car and post-carbon futures through cycling policies and projects grounded in mobility justice". . And we are here for it! . Via Mimi Sheller "Mobility Justice: The Politics of Movement in an Age of Extremes." a talk at UC Davis, CA. Nov 1-2, 2019 @ 1:00pm - 3:00pm. Link in profile. . Making space for yourself on the road, sometimes requires creativity. If your city doesn’t have bike lanes, it’s up to every car that passes you on your bike to determine how much space to give you. Even if your state laws requires drivers to give 3-4ft of passing, often drivers suck at it and are what we call PASSHOLES. But you can reclaim some space—specifically, a safe passing distance—by strapping a pool noodle to your bike or any of these other cleaver ways of demanding space for yourself on the roads (swipe through). Trying silly tactics like these doesn’t negate being useful. . Like all tactical urbanism, these are great ways to get the message out for needed and protected bike lanes. . It’s been a week since our third issue “Bike Liberation” launched. And honestly, this week has made it difficult to talk about it when I really want to burn it all down.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ While we mourn and continue to seek justice for Breonna Taylor, I’m reminding myself not to cave into apathy and dismay. That would be too easy and resistance is a long road. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’m also reminded that we must keep pedaling and seek to dismantle the policies and establishments that uphold the systems that allows the injustices of white supremacy and patriarchy to prevail. We must continue to create spaces and tables for us, by us, and work towards challenging a future where white supremacy, colonization, and patriarchy are non existent - that work starts inside each of us.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I am not perfect and do not have all the answers so please do not put me on a pedal stool. I am always learning and I promise you alI that I will do what it takes to keep our message radical and to kill the cop in my head and burn the fucking system down so you can breath.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I encourage you all to carry THEIR NAMES with you when you ride, say them with every breath as you exhale and pedal. We must not fail them and future generations.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This issue means more to us than you can imagine, the collaboration, words, stories, and purpose behind it means something. Your support for this zine goes to building our tables and supporting BIPOC communities in need of funding. This one particularly goes to building a BIPOC event for us, by us. 10% of all our zine sales go to supporting a BIPOC bike led org. This work means more than zines, it means building what we need after we burn the shit that doesn’t serve us down.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #cyclistazine #bikeriotnotquiet #bipoccyclist #resistance #shredthepartriarchy #zine #zines #bikezines #diybikes #decolonizebikes #bipoczine #diybikeculture #ourbikesourstories #bikeliberation #bikesforjustice #ride4justice https://www.instagram.com/p/CFkFUJsHy15/?utm_medium=tumblr

Cyclista Zine Issue 3 is out tomorrow! Here’s a sneak peak 📓⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In collaboration with @Pedal2ThePeople we are excited to announce our third issue “Bike Liberation”. For this 3rd issue, we are sharing stories, visual art, photography, poetry, and essays all related to the current liberation movement and bikes - with ass kicking earthquaking content!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This issue was put on hold while the cycling community started coming together during a pandemic to provide diy aid and then the movement to support Black Lives Matter erupted. During all this we held a campaign to #changethename of the DK gravel race (we are still waiting for this change) all while holding this industry and our communities accountable to do more to be inclusive and equitable (you still have work to do). This zine morphed into something I couldn’t predict, as the year threw in some challenges for us all. I’m super proud of this issue and our campaigns despite them taking over my life for the last few months and am so proud and overjoyed by the sheer boundless talent, solidarity, and friendship of all the wonderful contributors and collaborators who made this possible! ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ While we felt that promoting zines was unnecessary during all this, we also felt is was more important than ever to amplify our friends, offer tools, and hope.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We dedicate this issue to the lives lost by police violence and hope the voices in these pages will give you much to think about what more you can do to support Black lives in cycling, outdoors, in life and the liberation movement⁣. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Keep your eyes peeled for this drop tomorrow 💌⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #cyclistazine #bikeriotnotquiet #bipoccyclist #resistance #shredthepartriarchy #zine #zines #bikezines #diybikes #decolonizebikes #bipoczine #diybikeculture #ourbikesourstories #bikeliberation #bikesforjustice #ride4justice https://www.instagram.com/p/CFQIAj4pT7K/?utm_medium=tumblr

Cyclista Zine, at the heart, is an anti-racist and intersectional feminist radical response to the cycling industry. This community was created for Black, Indigenous, POC + WTF folks, if this is your lane and you have light skin privilege or consider yourself an ally or fan and consume this content/use any of our resources for your work or advocacy please consider supporting our work financially over on Patreon. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ With our third issue coming, we'd also like to celebrate our upcoming anniversary by reaching our goal of 500 patrons this August. With memberships starting at $1, and 10k of you, we could hire a whole team of BIPOC folks to create content and more.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Our long term goals are to be able to make this work sustainable to hire a team and pay BIPOC contributors and support content and events by us. We would have never known that the coronavirus and the BLM movement would make new and more demands for content creation by and for us, thing is this labor needs support too.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If support is not an option, please keep sharing and amplifying us, we want to be able to keep hyping up so many of you. Also, we also have plenty of issue 1 available and are in low stock for issue two so grab one before the weekend is over.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Remember to read, drink water, abolish racism, abolish cops, ride your bike, distribute your wealth and support Cyclista Zine.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #cyclistazine #mobilityjustice #bikeequity #cyclingjustice #ftwcycling #bipoc #bipoccyclist #resistance #cycling #cyclinglifestyle #cyclinglife #shredthepartriarchy #cyclingmedia #bikingdiversity #inequality #zine #bicycle #bikes #bikeactivism #zines #bikezines #diybike #decolonizebikes #submissions #bipoczine #diybikeculture #ourbikesourstories #poczine https://www.instagram.com/p/CDUVpGRpZlR/?utm_medium=tumblr

It’s time to add systemic change to symbolic actions. Street paint, black squares, and company statements aren't systemic change. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ While these gestures of public solidarity are important and valuable, institutional leaders would do well to understand that public displays of support are just the beginning of what’s necessary to meaningfully “confront racism” in our world. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ For one instance @trekbikes statement 'All In' rings hallow as they continue to provide police with bikes and equipment while claiming they think cops are good for community policing. Data proves that more cops in Black and Brown communities are more likely to racially profile and use psychological and physical violence against these communities. Some of the leadership at Trek expresses pride in their support with police and are getting praise for 'all they do' so that tells you what you need to know about the cycling industry as a whole. Mediocre white men all over this industry are getting praise right now for doing what they should have been doing all along while those who have been advocating for real change are being toned policed to be nice. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Truth is, these companies aren't going to hold themselves accountable. Blanket statements don't create safer communities, safer streets, safer work environments, and policies that change an entire system meant to uphold white supremacy. White folks in position of power literally need to be marching on the streets, banging on doors of city hall and board meetings demanding change but we aren't hopeful when their comfort and willful ignorance is what they want to protect. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ CEOs/Presidents are unethical, even the French needed a revolution to cancel the bourgeoisie and monarchy, let that spirit of revolution set in with you today. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #cyclistazine #mobilityjustice #bikeequity #socialjustice #resistance #cycling #urbanism #outdoors #shredthepartriarchy #racialjustice #bikingdiversity #bike #cities #streetsafety #bikelanes #blm #bicycleadvocacy #bikelife #citycycling #transportation #planning #bikelanes https://www.instagram.com/p/CCYnMjNF4WQ/?utm_medium=tumblr

Planners, civil engineers, policy makers, safe streets, vision zero, cycling advocates - institutional racism impacts policies and practice in transit, housing, access to bike lanes/outdoors, school funding and so much more. . This is an incredible resource to understand the history of planning policy and how policies/practices impact our built spaces and how we should be addressing the policies that persist inequality and policing in our fields of work. • Repost from @sarvarnah • 🗣💥 So you wanna have *the* conversation? Struggling to understand how systematic discrimination has worked in the past? Just want to expand your scope of planning knowledge? 🤔 Here are some terms and theories specifically related to urban planning I’ve learned about that have helped me understand this country’s racist past. They could help you, too! The United States has routinely targeted, displaced, and disenfranchised BIPOC, especially Black Americans through strategic policies, programs, and PLANNING! The results of these policies and practices, from Redlining to Gentrification, continue to affect Black Americans today. I’ve also included some helpful works of literature for those that want to learn more. Let me know if you have questions and please leave any feedback! 💥” #cyclistazine #mobilityjustice #bikeequity #socialjustice #resistance #cycling #urbanism #outdoors #shredthepartriarchy #racialjustice #bikingdiversity #bike #cities #streetsafety #bikelanes #blm #bicycleadvocacy #bikelife #citycycling #transportation #planning #bikelanes https://www.instagram.com/p/CBlETmkFc1B/?utm_medium=tumblr
