The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have recently released a video of Meghan volunteering at a pop-up baby boutique she staged for expectant mothers experiencing homelessness. This is not an act of solidarity with struggling families, but carefully curated promotional publicity stunts from an archaic institution. In the opening line of The Housemartins’ song “Flag Day”, Paul Heaton sings, “Too many Florence Nightingales, not enough Robin Hoods”. Although written nearly 40 years ago, it couldn’t sum up better the predicament in which the UK today finds itself – with rising poverty, destitution and homelessness. Heaton sings that charity is “a waste of time if you know what they mean, try shaking a box in front of the Queen, ‘cause her purse is fat and bursting at the seams”. In other words, royals, if you’re concerned about poverty give away a spare palace or two, don’t give us a video montage of your latest poverty safari.
Andrew Fisher, ‘Royal visits to baby banks are a dangerous normalisation of poverty’, iNews

I did not write this poem... but I wish I had. It is wonderfully written and rich in imagery. It's inspiring.

Sometimes a Wild God
By: Tom Hirons - Poet and Storyteller
Sometimes a wild god comes to the table.
He is awkward and does not know the ways
Of porcelain, of fork and mustard and silver.
His voice makes vinegar from wine.
When the wild god arrives at the door,
You will probably fear him.
He reminds you of something dark
That you might have dreamt,
Or the secret you do not wish to be shared.
He will not ring the doorbell;
Instead he scrapes with his fingers
Leaving blood on the paintwork,
Though primroses grow
In circles round his feet.
You do not want to let him in.
You are very busy.
It is late, or early, and besides…
You cannot look at him straight
Because he makes you want to cry.
The dog barks.
The wild god smiles,
Holds out his hand.
The dog licks his wounds
And leads him inside.
The wild god stands in your kitchen.
Ivy is taking over your sideboard;
Mistletoe has moved into the lampshades
And wrens have begun to sing
An old song in the mouth of your kettle.
‘I haven’t much,’ you say
And give him the worst of your food.
He sits at the table, bleeding.
He coughs up foxes.
There are otters in his eyes.
When your wife calls down,
You close the door and
Tell her it’s fine.
You will not let her see
The strange guest at your table.
The wild god asks for whiskey
And you pour a glass for him,
Then a glass for yourself.
Three snakes are beginning to nest
In your voicebox. You cough.
Oh, limitless space.
Oh, eternal mystery.
Oh, endless cycles of death and birth.
Oh, miracle of life.
Oh, the wondrous dance of it all.
You cough again,
Expectorate the snakes and
Water down the whiskey,
Wondering how you got so old
And where your passion went.
The wild god reaches into a bag
Made of moles and nightingale-skin.
He pulls out a two-reeded pipe,
Raises an eyebrow
And all the birds begin to sing.
The fox leaps into your eyes.
Otters rush from the darkness.
The snakes pour through your body.
Your dog howls and upstairs
Your wife both exults and weeps at once.
The wild god dances with your dog.
You dance with the sparrows.
A white stag pulls up a stool
And bellows hymns to enchantments.
A pelican leaps from chair to chair.
In the distance, warriors pour from their tombs.
Ancient gold grows like grass in the fields.
Everyone dreams the words to long-forgotten songs.
The hills echo and the grey stones ring
With laughter and madness and pain.
In the middle of the dance,
The house takes off from the ground.
Clouds climb through the windows;
Lightning pounds its fists on the table.
The moon leans in through the window.
The wild god points to your side.
You are bleeding heavily.
You have been bleeding for a long time,
Possibly since you were born.
There is a bear in the wound.
‘Why did you leave me to die?’
Asks the wild god and you say:
‘I was busy surviving.
The shops were all closed;
I didn’t know how. I’m sorry.’
Listen to them:
The fox in your neck and
The snakes in your arms and
The wren and the sparrow and the deer…
The great un-nameable beasts
In your liver and your kidneys and your heart…
There is a symphony of howling.
A cacophony of dissent.
The wild god nods his head and
You wake on the floor holding a knife,
A bottle and a handful of black fur.
Your dog is asleep on the table.
Your wife is stirring, far above.
Your cheeks are wet with tears;
Your mouth aches from laughter or shouting.
A black bear is sitting by the fire.
Sometimes a wild god comes to the table.
He is awkward and does not know the ways
Of porcelain, of fork and mustard and silver.
His voice makes vinegar from wine
And brings the dead to life.

Duke Reviews Xtra: Cinderella (Remake)
Hello, I'm Andrew Leduc And Welcome To Duke Reviews Xtra Where We Continue Our Look At The Movies Of Disney...
youtube
And Yesterday I Looked At The 3rd Cinderella Sequel, Cinderella 3: A Twist In Time So, Today Is A Day I've Been Dreading Ever Since I Started Looking At Cinderella, Let's Look At The Remake...
No Synopsis Today, Let's Just Dive Into (Sighs) Cinderella...
With The Fairy Godmother (Played By Helena Bonham Carter) Narrating, Our Story Starts With Ella, Living With Her Wealthy Parents In A Beautiful Estate In A Peaceful Kingdom...
From A Young Age, Ella Is Taught By Her Mother (Played By Agent Carter) To Believe In The Existence Of Magic, Allowing Her To Befriend Many Of The Animals On The Estate But In Particular The Mice...
Yes, Everything Is Perfect In Ella's Life Until Her Mother Contracts (Name Fatal Illness Here). On Her Deathbed, She Makes Cinderella Promise That She Will Always Have Courage And Be Kind To Other People...
Which Leads To The First Problem I Have With The Film, They Overplay The Message A Little Too Much...
It's Like They Want To Hammer Into Your Head By Saying It A Million Times Or In This Case, Seven Times Throughout The Damn Movie And It Just Gets To The Point Where You Want To Say...
youtube
Years Later, When Ella Is A Teenager (Now Played By Lilly James) Her Father Marries Lady Tremaine (Played By Cate Blanchett) Who's The Widow Of An Old Acquaintance Who Has 2 Daughters Named Drizella And Anastasia...
But When The Father Is Getting Ready To Leave On Another Business Trip, He Admits To Ella That He Likes Ella's Mother More Than He Likes Tremaine As Tremaine Overhears Their Conversation...
Tumblr media
After The Father Leaves, Tremaine Takes Advantage Of Ella's Hospitality By Persuading Her To Give Up Her Room To Drizella And Anastasia And Making The Attic Her New Room Temporarily...
Tumblr media
While The Other Ones Are Painted. We Get A Sing, Sweet Nightingale Reference As Cinderella Helps The Workers Around The House Before One Night, Ella Finds Out That He Father Has Died On One Of His Trips From A Friend Of The Family...
Dismissing The Servants Shortly After Ella's Father's Death, Ella Does All The Work Around The House And Is Relegated To Nothing More Than A Servant As She Is Subjected To Cruel Mistreatment By Tremaine And The Stepsisters...
To The Point That She Is Forbidden To Eat With Them And Is Spitefully Renamed Cinderella After Waking With Soot On Her Face After Sleeping In Front Of The Fireplace...
Which Leads Next Problem With The Remake, Her Breakdown Here...
After Being Not Allowed To Eat With Her Stepmother And Stepsisters, Cinderella Breaks Down In The Kitchen, And It Is Understandable, She Has A Reason To Be Hurt...
But The Only Problem Is When She Has The Breakdown Here, It Takes Away The Impact Of Her Breakdown Later When The Stepsisters Tear Her Dress Apart Or In This Movie's Case, Slightly Rip It...
Anyway, Going On A Ride In The Woods To Get Away From Her Evil Stepsiblings, Ella Encounters A Hunting Party Where She Meets One Of The Hunters Who Claims To Be An Apprentice Named Kit (Played By Richard Madden)...
Tumblr media
Who Lives In The Palace. But Unbeknownst To Cinderella, He Is Actually The Prince Of The Kingdom And Despite Never Learning Her Name, He Becomes Infatuated By Ella After Talking With Her...
Returning To The Palace Afterwards, Kit Discovers That His Father, The King (Played By The Master) Is Going To Die And Regenerate Into John Simms Soon...
Tumblr media
So, He Insists That Kit Finds A Bride At The Upcoming Ball But Despite The Law Saying That The Prince Must Marry A Princess, Kit Can't Get Over Ella And Gets His Father To Invite Every Eligible Maiden In The Land To The Ball...
With The Ball Announced, The Tremaines Are Ecstatic At The Possibility Of Being Married To Royalty But Refusing To Buy Ella A Dress, Ella Fixes Up An Old Dress Of Her Mom's With The Help Of The Mice...
But On The Night Of The Ball, Ella Tries To Join Her Stepfamily But Claiming That Being Seen With Her Would Only Disgrace Them, They Tear The Dress Up (Or As I Said Slightly Rip It) And Leave Without Her..
Seemingly Breaking Down Into Tears Again, Cinderella Encounters An Old Beggar Woman Who Asks For Some Water, Getting It For Her, The Old Beggar Reveals To Ella That She's Her Fairy Godmother...
Which Leads To My Next Complaint That Whole Scene....
In The Original, As Cinderella Was Crying The Fairy Godmother Just Appeared And Comforted Her Like A Grandparent Would....
Where Here, Ella Is Put To A Test First To See If She's A Good Person When The Fairy Godmother Oughta Know That She Is A Good Person And Just Help Her
Turning Her Old Beggar Look Into The Look Of A Fairy Godmother (I Guess) She Turns A Pumpkin Into A Carriage, 4 Mice Into Horses, 2 Lizards Into Footmen And A Goose Into A Coachmen Before Turning Cinderella's Tattered Dress Into A Gorgeous Blue Gown With Glass Slippers...
Which Leads Me To My Next Complaint, Why Aren't The Songs In This?
Now I Understand Not Having The Mice's Song And So This Is Love From The Film In This Movie And I'll Live With The Reference To Sing Sweet Nightingale That They Had Earlier But Why Did You Not Have Bibbidy Bobbity Boo In This Scene?
You Have Helena Bonham Carter Singing The Song In The Soundtrack...
So Why Not Use It In The Film During That Scene?
The Same Goes For A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes Which You Had Lilly James Singing In The Soundtrack Too?
You Could Have Had Her Singing That In The Attic Instead Of That Song From So Dear To My Heart When She Was Locked In The Attic...
youtube
And It Would Have Made It A Better Scene Than What It Was...
Idiots!
So, Getting In The Carriage, The Fairy Godmother Warns Her That The Spell Only Lasts Till Midnight Before Sending Her On Her Way...
Arriving At The Ball, The Entire Court Is Entranced By Ella Including Kit, Who Gives Her The First Dance Of The Night As He Reveals Who He Is To Her...
This Irritates The Grand Duke (Played By Erik Selvig) Who Has Secretly Promised Kit To A Spanish Princess Which Lady Tremaine Overhears...
This Leads To My Next Complaint, Making The Grand Duke A Bad Guy!...
What...The...Hell...
The Grand Duke Was Fine The Way He Was In The Original Movie, There Was No Need To Make Him Another Bad Guy When Lady Tremaine And The Stepsisters Are Enough For This Movie
Come On!
youtube
After Dancing With The Prince, Ella And Him Look Around The Palace And The Grounds Where They Slowly Fall In Love But Before He Can Learn Her Name It Strikes Midnight And Ella Is Forced To Flee Where She Accidentally Drops One Of Her Slippers On The Stairs As She Rides Off...
Getting Away Before The Final Stroke, She Hides The Other Slipper In Her Room While Back At The Palace, The King Gives His Blessing For His Son To Find And Marry The Girl He Fell In Love With...
Making An Announcement That The Prince Will Marry The Mystery Girl If She Only Present Herself, Ella Races Home To Get The Slipper Only To Discover That It's In The Hands Of Lady Tremaine Who Has Figured Out Her Identity Through Ella's Attitude After The Ball...
Tumblr media
This Leads Her To Blackmail Ella, Telling Her That When She Is Queen, Tremaine Will Be Made Head Of The Royal Household And Drizella And Anastasia Will Be Given Proper Husbands...
Refusing Tremaine's Threat, Saying That She Regrets Not Protecting Her Father From Her But She Will Protect Both The Prince And The Kingdom From Her Evil No Matter What She Does To Her, So, Smashing The Slipper, Tremaine Locks Cinderella In Her Room...
Tumblr media
Taking The Shoe To The Grand Duke, Tremaine Reveals The Name Of The Mystery Girl To Him As She Makes A Deal With Him That In Exchange For Her Silence, She Would Get The Title Of Countess And And Drizella And Anastasia Would Be Given Worthy Husbands...
Taking The Broken Slipper To Kit In An Effort To Discourage Him, It Instead Makes Him More Determined To Find His True Love As He Orders Them To Take The Slipper They Have And Try It On Every Maiden In The Kingdom...
Amusing His Highness, The Grand Duke And Captain Of The Guard Lead A Garrison To Try The Slipper On All The Girls In The Land. Eventually Arriving At The Tremaine House, They Try The Slipper On Anastasia And Drizella But Of Course It Doesn't Fit Them...
Turning To Leave, They Soon Stop When They Hear Ella Singing Through A Window The Mice Opened While She's Dancing Like An Idiot...
Tumblr media
Which Leads Me To My Last Problem With The Film, Cinderella Herself...
People Like This Cinderella For Being A So Called Smart And Independent Character, But Unlike The Original This One Is A Dummy For 2 Reasons...
The First Reason Comes From This Scene, When She Was Locked In Her Room In The Original, She Cried, She Screamed And Like A Regular Person Would But Here She Just Gives Up And Dances Like A Dummy As She Sings That Song I Mentioned From So Dear To My Heart...
And Like I Said If It Was A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes I Might Feel Different But Since It's Not, It's Just Dumb
And The Second Reason Is Her Reasoning For Staying With The Tremaines...
In The Original Movie, After Her Father Died When She Was A Child, Tremaine Manipulated Her Her Entire Life By Making Her Feel Guilty And Serve Her Family To The Point That She Doesn't Know Much About The Outside World And Could Never Really Leave The House...
Where In This, She Could Have Left Anytime She Wanted But She Promised Her Dad That She Would Look After Their House Which Makes No Sense Later When She Leaves Anyway At The Very End Of The Movie...
Tumblr media
We're Obviously Going To Like The Cinderella That's More Human And Relatable To Us And I'm Sorry But That's The Original...
The Grand Duke Tries To Leave Anyway, But He Is Shocked To Discover That One Of The Men Is Kit In Disguise Who Demands That The Captain Thoroughly Investigate The Sound...
Of Course, Once Ella Is Found Tremaine Forbids Her From Trying On The Shoe But Telling Her That She Has Never Been Her Mother, Her And Kit Are Reunited And She Tries On The Slipper To Which She Fits...
With The Stepsisters Asking For Her Forgiveness, She Forgives Tremaine As She Leaves (Despite Promising Her Father That She Would Look After The House) And To Live Happily Ever After With Kit While Tremaine And The Stepsisters Soon Depart The Kingdom With The Grand Duke...
And That's Cinderella And Despite People Saying That This Is The Best of The Disney Remakes It's Honestly The Worst Until Mulan Comes Out...
While You All Know My Reasons For Hating This Movie, The Story Was Interesting At Times And I Do Like What They Did With The Prince And Tremaine And If There Was One Good Thing I Did Like About The Cinderella Character It Was Her Ball Gown...
But I'm Sorry The Negatives Just Outweigh The Positives Of This Movie So For That I Say Skip It And Just Watch The Frozen Short That Played Before The Movie Because You'll Get More Entertainment Out Of That Than Of This Movie...
Next Week Is Wonderland Week As I Look At Not Only Disney's Original Animated Version On Duke Reviews Movies But The Tim Burton Film, The Burton Less Sequel And 1 Other Version Of The Tale Done By Irwin Allen In 1985....
Anyway, Till Then, This Is Duke, Signing Off...

Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins – practically perfect in every way
For many of us Baby Boomers, Mary Poppins, was the ultimate film of our childhood and, it has really has stood the test of time.  I watched it again last week. And what would Christmas be without Mary Poppins or The Sound of Music, eh?  I love it, just as much as I ever did.
Many thanks, sincerely… Jane and Michael Banks Childhood envy confession… I always wanted to be Jane Banks
Back in 1964, we all wanted to be Jane or Michael Banks.  They were sharing their world with the perfectly perfect Julie Andrews as the immortal Mary Poppins who, just by clicking her fingers, was making their lives supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.
When I first heard that Emily Blunt (Girl on a Train) was going to star as Mary in the 2018 production of Mary Poppins Returns, I said… noooo, you’ve GOT to be joking.   Nobody can step into Julie Andrews’ Victorian button boots and prance around the rooftops of London singing like a nightingale.  Let’s face it, Julie Andrew’s voice alone is an impossible act to follow.
But… I am delighted to say that one of my Christmas presents was a ticket to see Mary Poppins Returns and I was in the theatre last night, agog, missing my mouth, dropping popcorn down my front.
‘Close your mouth, Tessa Barrie, we are not a codfish.’
So, Emily, I take it all back, you nailed Mary Poppins, in your own inimitable way.
Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins
Disney brought in some of the powerhouses of modern cinema to make sure Mary Poppins’ return flew our kites to the highest height, including Colin Firth and Julie Walters, as well as a few surprises.   Wheeling in Karen Dotrice, the original Jane Banks, was a nice touch, but you’ve got to be quick to spot her.
Another bastion of Disney magic, Angela Lansbury (Bedknobs and Broomsticks 1971 amongst a host of other fine productions), singing, pretty flawlessly, at ninety-three!  And another spritely ninety-three-year-old, Dick van Dyke reprises his secondary role of Mr. Dawes Jr in the original production.  I’ve love to know what they’re both sprinkling on their cornflakes in the mornings.
Angela Lansbury in Mary Poppins Returns
The ageless Mr Dawes Jr in Mary Poppins Returns
The magic of Meryl Streep.  An unsurpassed performance as Topsy, Mary’s cousin.
But for me, the fleeting,  superlative performance from Mary Poppins Returns comes from Meryl Streep, as Topsy Turvy, Mary’s cousin.  Pure Meryl magic.
I missed hearing some of the classic and very memorable songs from the original film.  The composer, Marc Shaiman, kind of teases you with the first few bars of Chim Chim Cheree or Let’s Go Fly a Kite then launches into one of the new numbers.  But, I have no doubt that the new score will worm its way into my memory banks and I will become as word perfect as I am with the songs, if not the entire script, from the 1964 production.  So, I can’t wait to add the DVD to my collection of Disney greats.
Mary Poppins Returns is warming the cockles of the hearts of a whole new generation, who in turn will pass it on to their sons and daughters, who will sing in grateful chorus… Well done! Well done! Well done, Disney you’ve done it again!
Endnote
Whilst writing this, I couldn’t stop thinking about all the great actors that made the 1964 production of Mary Poppins such a magical experience for so many of us.  Many are no longer with us, gone but never forgotten, especially Matthew Garber, the little boy who warmed our hearts with his portrayal of Michael Banks, who so tragically died in 1977.  He was just 21 years old.
Matthew Garber 1956-1977
Disney Does It Again. She’s Back! For many of us Baby Boomers, Mary Poppins, was the ultimate film of our childhood and, it has really has stood the test of time.

Jealous Moon: The Best of The Week
Hayes Carll. Photo: High Road Touring
The year is starting off to it’s usually slow pace and should stay on that track for about another seven days as it does every year.  While it’s not quite as packed out like the summer weeks, that doesn’t mean that this week doesn’t have plenty of options.  Performances from Hayes Carll, Darude, and more will be here while local acts keep the pace.  Houston, here’s how to spend the next seven days.
Wednesday you can start off at MKT Bar where I’ll be on hand to spin albums.  The set will include myfavorite tracks from the last year, as well as songs from my Best of 2016 album list.  The all ages event runs from 7 pm to 10 pm and it’s 100% FREE.
Christmas Island will host a solo set from Arizona’s Diners.  The indie pop set should be littered with electro pop jams from last year’s three, and worth checking out.  The anarcho punk of Houston’s Ancient Gods will provide direct support and the DIY indie rock of Houston’s Heck Nugget will be on prior.  The folk pop of San Marcos’ Death By Skwerl will endearingly open the all ages show with doors at 7 pm and a $5 cover.
Walters will host Houston’s The Cops for a night of punk rock.  If you’ve never seen a crazy live set from The Cops, they’re dressed like cops, they sing tongue in cheek punk from the cop’s point of view, and tracks like “Street Hooker” sound like Hot Snakes meets Pissed Jeans.  Austin’s Cheap Fur will go on prior while the street punk of Trouble Boys will go on before them.  The Mahas will open the all ages show with doors at 8 pm and a measly $6 cover.  Keep in mind, the order of this show might be different, as it’s been listed differently in different places.
At Under The Volcano you can catch an up close and personal performance from Texas’ Shinyribs.  The roots Americana rockers always play a heck of a show, and if you’re a fan, this is your chance to see them as close as if they were in your living room.  The crazy and intense bluegrass of Son of Bitch will open the 21 & up show with doors at 8 pm and a $20 cover.
Thursday at The Tank Project Space at Spring Street, you can catch an exhibit from Gary Watson called Dear Lieutenant Governor, We’re Just People.  The photography exhibit will feature photographs of Houston’s Doomstress Alexis of Project Armageddon and Doomstress, and both will be on hand for the opening reception.  The all ages exhibit gets going around 6 pm and it’s 100% FREE.
Zahid Dewji. Photo: Come And Take It/Robert MacCready
Over at Improv, Houston’s Zahid Dewji will swing by to help you get a good laugh in.  The show, with Zahid on as headliner just proves that hard work pays off, as this guy works hard.  I’m sure the slew of Houston comics like Andrew Youngblood, Zach Dickson, John Nguyen and more who will be on the bill as well will bring plenty of laughs for the 18 & up show with doors at 7:15 pm and a paltry $5 cover.
Stereo Live will host the edm jams of loosid.  The elusive producer will be on hand to bring his dance heavy tunes to all, and drop some of the groove heavy tracks like “I Want U” and “X-Ray” that he dropped last year to life.  The 18 & up show has doors at 9 pm and tickets between FREE and $10.
Mucky Duck will host Grammy winning Americana leader Jim Lauderdale over to perform.  Lauderdale will be on hand for his album release that’s full of Texas twang and Western swing.  The album, last year’s This Changes Everything showcases another new direction for the singer songwriter.  The 21 & up show gets going around 9:30 pm and has tickets between $28 and $30.
Friday you could head out to Dosey Doe in the Woodlands for the popular sounds of Hayes Carll.  Carll has been making his rounds as of late in support of his new album Lovers and Leavers from last year.  The Texas singer songwriter still packs em’ in though, and his sets are always worth catching.  Your dinner isn’t included with your ticket price on this show, but their kitchen is open at 7 pm with tickets between $26 and $30.
Nightingale Room will host a set from Americana rockers Ruckus.  The group is on the heels of releasing their debut album, though their latest single “Trades” offers up some depth to the band’s already intriguing sound.  The indie alt pop of Humble’s No Rehearsal will open the 21 & up show with doors at 7 pm and it’s 100% FREE.
Children of Pop. Photo: Tell All Your Friends
Upstairs at White Oak Music Hall you can catch the indie electro pop of LA’s TV Girl.  Here in support of last year’s Who Really Cares, the duo has become known for fun live sets that make you want to get down.  Houston’s Children of Pop will provide plenty of good time jams as direct support while the tongue in cheek electro jams of JERK will go on prior.  The weird LA pop of one woman band Poppet will open the all ages show with doors at 8 pm and a $10 cover.
Walters will have the compositional songs of Austin’s Marcus Rubio, also known as more eaze.  The more eaze project consists of destruction of song forms and sonic collages, and is worth checking out.  His latest release wOrk is a real trip.  Electro pop duo TEE VEE will provide direct support while Hedrick & Murland go on before.  The minimal pop of Houston’s FASHIONWEEK will open the all ages show with Taylor Spank visuals.  The doors are at 8 pm and tickets are between $8 and $10.

Fitzgerald’s will host the always twangy and entertaining sounds of Wayne Hancock.  Though he’s dropped the Wayne “the train” Hancock moniker, his shows still stand up and his latest release Slingin’ Rhythm from last year seems to echo the Texas swing that Bob Wills made famous.  The roots based rockabilly of The Octanes will energetically open the show and provide support as well for the all ages show with doors at 8 pm and tickets between $10 and $15.
Satellite Bar will have the alterna rock of Forever Miles over to play for the second time, while the alt prog rock of NOLA’s Paper Bison will go on beforehand.  These guys are pretty solid and their latest release Anyone Else is definitely worth checking out.  The indie rock of Since Always will also be on the bill and Finger Guns will open the all ages show with doors at 8 pm and an $8 cover.

Saturday you can get your sexy on over in the studio at Warehouse Live when Kiki Maroon’s Burly Q Lounge returns.  The show featuring music, comedy and of course burlesque has a bit of everything for everyone.  This edition will have music from Chase Hamblin and comedy from Andy Huggins as well as a slew of guests performing everything in between.  The 18 & up show has doors at 7 pm and seated tickets for $25.
Upstairs at White Oak Music Hall you could check out the singer songwriter jams of Matthew Logan Vasquez.  Known as the frontman for Delta Spirit, Vasquez is making plenty of waves on his own, most recently with his catchy 2016 release Solicitor Returns.  His live shows are always fun and full of energy as well.  The swaying and rhythmically beautiful tones of Dollie Barnes will go on as direct support and and opener while bringing her latest single “Doesn’t It Matter” to life.  The all ages show has doors at 8 pm and it’s 100% FREE.
Satellite Bar will bring the intense sounds of Houston’s Krullur on for a show.  These guys kind of scare me with their creepy dark metal, and their latest album …failure to comply should give you an idea of what you’re in for.  Cryptic Void will bring their speedy grindcore on as direct support while Apocalyptic Noise Syndicate will bring their strange sounds on prior.  The thrash of Houston’s Termination Force will also perform and the all ages show will get opened by the charge d beat punk of Saint Crusher.  Bring earplugs with doors at 8 pm and an $8 cover, cause’ this will be a loud show.
Rudyard’s will have the indie rock of Arlington’s Tame Tame and Quiet over for a set.  These guys have an atmospheric sound that’s all over their latest full length, last year’s Peach Hills.  The indie pop rock of Slow Future will provide support while the pop of Bryan’s The Inators on as openers.  The 21 & up show has doors at 9 pm and a $5 cover.

On Monday you should head over to The Secret Group for their Nerf Or Nothing Mondays.  Tournaments of Nerf guns blazing, teams of 3-5, and a $5 entry into the tournament sets you up for double elimination or the chance to win cash and prizes.  More information is available here, the doors are at 9 pm, and cover is between $15 and $25.
Over at Poison Girl, their Tiny Concert series will see a solo set from Charlie Bryan and a following DJ set as well.  The 21 & up show gets going promptly at 10 pm and it’s 100% FREE.
Tuesday you can get there early to hop in line for another edition of Grown-Up Storytime at Rudyard’s.  The massively popular Boo Town event is always worth checking out, and now with two shows at either 8 pm or 10 pm, you’re guaranteed to get your laugh on.  The always 21 & up shows always have a measly $5 cover.
That’s about all that’s happening around town this week.  Remember to stay warm, that you should always drink like an adult, and a safe ride home is always available.
