Must-Try Food in Ugbo Food Hub
Tumblr media
If you are a nocturnal person like me who enjoys night walks with friends while eating and snacks on the side, this article was written just for you! Join me and let's dive into this well-known food place in Tondo, Manila dubbed as the Streetfood Capital of the Philippines- Ugbo!
The long and narrow stretch in Velasquez, Tondo, Manila, now fondly called Ugbo Street Food, has grown famous for its numerous kiosks that serve inexpensive snacks and desserts until the wee hours of the night.
In Hiligaynon, "Ugbo" means pastime and serves as a street name in a part of Tondo, Manila. It transformed into a famous street food market. Ugbo is a neighborhood bustling with stalls and restaurants open from 5pm until past midnight. It became popular due to its wide variety of food. I wonder how locals manage to sleep amid the constant activity; it's a lively street, filled with lights and bustling conversations. Nonetheless, Ugbo stands as a source of pride for Tondo, providing income for locals. Visitors, including foreigners and food enthusiasts, flock to this area. It's truly a blessing to appreciate.
If you’re looking for an affordable place to enjoy delicious snacks and hang out with friends, check out this thriving community in Manila.
Tumblr media
From Korean to Japanese to Filipino food, Ugbo Street has a great variety of food choices whose process mostly starts at less than 100 pesos: corn dog and rice cake such as spicy tteokbokki; crispy tempura and kani salad; sizzling sisig, bulalo, fresh lumpia, homemade lumpia, and fried rice; grilled squids and scallops; and skewered pork, beef, and tuna belly.
Other stalls offer ice cream rolls, fresh fruit drinks and shakes, fluffy pancakes and crepes, pizza, and pasta, as well as the famous "magic ice cream"-pop rice balls floating on smoky liquid nitrogen.
FOOD FINDS AT UGBO TONDO, MANILA
SIZZLING SISIG RICE
Tumblr media
The sizzling sisig rice is an experience that engages all the senses in a harmonious celebration. Visually, it's a spectacle—a hot plate sizzling with anticipation, emitting aromatic steam that curls upwards, inviting you closer. The scent, a tantalizing blend of savory meats, zesty calamansi, and aromatic garlic, tickles the nostrils, promising a flavor fiesta. As the dish arrives, the crackling sound ignites excitement, while the sight of golden-brown sisig atop a bed of fluffy rice is a feast for the eyes. The first taste is a revelation—the crispy yet tender sisig, with its umami-rich flavor, dances on the palate, complemented by the fragrant rice that soaks up the savory juices. Each bite is a symphony of textures and tastes, delivering a crescendo of flavors that leaves a lasting impression, an invitation to savor the essence of Filipino cuisine in every sensation.
SPICY FISH CAKE
Tumblr media
I saw this street food in every Kdramas and I’m very excited to try it. First bite and I fell in love! This is the kind of street food that I would buy after my study classes. Imagine picking up one of these fish cakes, and feeling the crunch as your fingers sink into its golden crust—the sight alone is mouthwatering. The aroma, a tantalizing mix of the sea and aromatic spices teases your senses, drawing you closer. As you take that first bite, the crispy outer layer gives way to a tender, flavorful interior. The taste is a symphony—subtle fish flavors enhanced by a medley of herbs and spices, creating a comforting yet exciting experience. But the most commendable is the sauce!
The fish cake sauce, oh, it's like a secret companion to the star of the show! Visually, it's a rich, velvety liquid, often with specks of vibrant herbs or chili flakes, inviting you to dive in. As the aroma wafts up, there's a tangy and slightly sweet scent that tickles your nose, hinting at the tantalizing flavors to come. Upon dipping a piece of fish cake, the sauce clings, promising a burst of flavor. The taste is a rollercoaster—a perfect balance of tanginess, a hint of sweetness, and perhaps a touch of spiciness, complementing the fish cakes beautifully.
For its price of 35 pesos each, I would say that this is very affordable.
CORN DOG
Tumblr media
The best corn dog I've ever tried! This is my favorite corn dog, As a cheese lover, this snack was really for me. It has a legit stretch of mozzarella cheese that I've been craving, and I also love the combination of sweetness and sourness that ketchup and mayonnaise brings. For 70 pesos I think it’s reasonable enough. One stick can make your tummy full, especially if you’re a light eater.
TAKOYAKI
Tumblr media
Picture the lively street scene, the sizzle and savory aroma that surrounds a takoyaki stand—the anticipation builds. These little balls of delight, when held, are warm and slightly crispy to the touch. Their appearance, golden-brown and topped with savory sauce and bonito flakes, invites a smile before even taking a bite. As you bring one close, the savory scent of the octopus, mingled with the umami-rich sauce and the tangy notes of pickled ginger, entices your senses. Upon tasting, the initial crunch reveals a molten interior—soft, creamy, and bursting with the flavors of the sea. The harmony of textures and tastes, from the crispy exterior to the tender octopus inside, combined with the medley of savory, sweet, and tangy flavors, is akin to experiencing a joyous celebration in a single bite, leaving a lingering warmth that feels like a happy hug from an old friend.
SWEET CORN
Tumblr media
Imagine cradling a cup of freshly boiled sweet corn, the warmth seeping through the container, comforting your hands. Its appearance, a medley of bright yellow kernels, is sprinkled with a touch of salt and a hint of melted butter—a visual promise of simplicity and satisfaction. As you lift it closer, the steam carries the familiar sweet aroma of corn, triggering memories of summer picnics and outdoor gatherings. With the first spoonful, the tender kernels burst with sweetness, each bite delivering a juicy and comforting sensation. The texture is soft, almost creamy, and the combination of sweetness with a subtle salty note dances on your palate, creating a harmonious balance that feels like a warm embrace on a chilly day
ALING CONSUELO'S FAMOUS HALO HALO
Tumblr media
If this is your first time visiting the Philippines you should try this famous dessert called Halo-halo!
Halo-halo means mixing a variety of ingredients into one bowl or cup. This dessert is exactly just that. At the bottom of a large cup, you can see sweetened beans, langka (jackfruit), sweetened banana slices and nata de coco put together. Then crushed ice with evaporated milk and on top, you can see an ube ice cream, homemade ube, and a leche flan (also a famous dessert in the Philippines). This cup of Halo-halo is worth 70 pesos.
In Ugbo there’s a family rivalry between the two halo-halo stalls that have the same brand name, Aling Consuelo Original Halo-halo. I asked one of the staff how it started and she said that the two owners are siblings. Before they were partners and ran the Aling Consuelo Halo-halo and soon became very famous in Ugbo, but one day they decided to separate and build their own Halo-halo store. I don’t know if this is their strategy to gain more attention from the customers, but I would say that it’s effective because I got curious as well.
Overall I will give this stall 2 stars. I’ve been a huge fan of Halo-halo ever since I was a kid but this one was very bland. The ingredients are neither tasty nor sweet. The servings are very little to think that this is their Special Halo-halo. I expected to have a cup full of ingredients and have that sweet and milky taste but what I’ve got is very bland and almost tasteless. The price of 70 pesos is way too expensive and not worth the price.
FINAL THOUGHTS... I stepped into Ugbo, Tondo, Manila, greeted by the bustling streets filled with vibrant colors and lively chatter. The air was thick with the aroma of sizzling street food and the faint sounds of music playing from nearby stores. As I navigated through the narrow alleys, I was warmly welcomed by the locals, their smiles reflecting genuine hospitality. I found myself drawn to the bustling market, where vendors proudly displayed their fresh produce and wares. Engaging in conversations with the vendors, I learned about their stories, their struggles, and their resilient spirit, which resonated throughout the community. Sampling some local delicacies, I experienced a burst of flavors—a delightful fusion of sweet, savory, and spicy tastes that mirrored the diversity of the neighborhood. The genuine warmth and sense of community in Ugbo, Tondo, left an indelible mark on me, showcasing the strength and vibrancy of Filipino culture amidst life's challenges.

Tumblr media
📍Happilee - 8/10
My first time eating here, bagong bukas din kasi sa mall kaya we tried. I ordered bibimbap by the way.
Very sulit for its price. - Sana all binabalikan haha emz . Goods din ang ambiance, very bright and cozy ang interior. Ang ccute pa ng silverware at lalagyan nila hehe also the take-out box, especially pag may sabaw. Nakaparang cling wrap yung lalagyan pero nakaheat pressed so it won’t spill in the paper bag.
Tumblr media
📍Classic Savory - 8.5/10
You’ll never go wrong with savory talaga. But, if nagtitipid, go for this one. This costs around 300+ only good for 2-3 persons.
Tumblr media
This chicken sisig only costs 75 pesos.
Tumblr media
📍Sa may Alabang din pero ibang kainan - 8.5/10
Siksik liglig naguumapaw na Halo-halo for only 80 pesos. Legit masarap to. Tama lang yung pagkashave ng ice, hindi tinipid sa gatas at higit sa lahat hindi ganoon katamis - plus point for me hahaha. Supposedly may ice cream to pero sayang lang naubusan na sila ng ice cream by the time na kumain kami, pasara na rin kasi sila nito. Best seller nga raw pala nila ‘to, ganon din yung mais con yelo nila.
Tumblr media
📍Addies Steakhouse - 7.5/10
Best seller daw nila itong porterhouse, so tinry ko. Masarap don tas mas mura pa compared dito. At mas malambot din hahaha
Tumblr media
📍Food sa meeting -6/10
Isinama ko lang ‘to haha lasagna pinoy style with toasted bread.

April 7, 2023
I woke up at around 8am and went straight to the gym. Did chest, back, and abs for today. I gave mommy and my little sister a call while I was doing my sets. I'm quite nervous about today. It's the day Eddie and I were to have our difficult conversation and to be honest I really didn't know whether we are going to agree to each other's terms or not.
Got back home around 10:30am and took a bath and got prepared to go to Brighton. He texted if we could meet at around 2pm instead because he was still doing chores. I still went on to my journey because I know that me being farther I wouldn't make it in time.
Got on a train and went from Norbiton to Vauxhall then I took the Victoria line going to King's Cross and took a national rail there going to Brighton. The sun was shining really brightly today and though that's something to be happy about because the last time I was in Brighton it was raining so hard but the retinol begged to disagree. There were a lot of people swarming to go elsewhere because it was the holidays. Glad that I was still able to get seats in the train. I'm not really a big fan of standing up. It was really cold today though the forecast said that it would be around 13 degrees. It's another day of me underestimating the weather here in the UK. I only wore a plain white shirt and a thin black bomber jacket and I was shivering most of the time. Tiis ganda is real.
Met Eddie there around 2:15pm and I don't know... I was just happy to see him. He gave me a hug and he held my hand on the way to Bruha, a Filipino restaurant in Brighton. We ordered some chicken skewers, sisig, and lechon kawali. Their ube smoothie was okay but I was really happy with their calamansi juice. I haven't had calamansi in a long, long time and I think it's my favourite citrus fruit.
We finally went to the beach and bought some drinks. We sat there in the sun and talked a lot. About what the issue is and how we can do better in the future when these things happen again. How we respond to stress and how to check-up on each other when these difficult moments happen. Our expectations of each other and the boundaries that we get to set. Our non-negotiables and if this relationship is worth fighting for. It was a really stressful thing to do. Opening up your inner-most layer and being vulnerable, like, naked vulnerable and it was kind of frightening to see him react because most of the issues were revolving around me and perhaps my emotional immaturity but I was surprised to know that he's willing to work it out with me and he'll try to meet my expectations and me to him to. This was when I knew that there's really something worth fighting for in the relationship because we're both happy to compromise stuff for each other.
We took the train towards Farringdon and the hour's journey was kind of annoying because there were two very loud children in front of us. We went to this pasta shop to eat dinner. Didn't finish my pasta meal because it was kind of underwhelming.
Went home and continued the conversation and yes. I'm happy about how this conversation is healing our relationship. It's worth fighting for. After, like around 11:30pm, he kissed my neck and we were happy with whatever we'd done after that.

Maillard Poblacion: A Charming New Restaurant Offering Filipino Twists to Western Cuisine
We recently visited a new restaurant in Poblacion, Makati serving a different kind of fusion cuisine. Our afternoon was filled with salads, pasta, paella, and steak featuring both Western and Filipino influences and flavors. That's why I couldn’t stop myself from trying out all the specialties here at Maillard Poblacion.
Maillard Poblacion opened its doors last February 5, 2023 in a more private and quiet residential area of Baranggay Poblacion in Makati City. Located at the corner of Gloria Street and Jacobo Streets, this charming location is now the next dining destination for friends, families, and even romantic dates.
The exact address may not be so easy to find, especially if you are not from that area, but simply enter Maillard Restaurant on Waze and it will lead you straight to this corner. The restaurant is open daily from 11am to 11pm.
Maillard got its name from the chemical reaction that happens to cooked food that gives it brown colors and complex flavors. The name is indicative of the myriad flavors that you can expect to encounter when dining here.
The restaurant can accommodate 50 guests on its two floors. The ground floor has a smaller bar area and this is also where you can find the open kitchen.
The second floor houses the main dining area with plush leather seats on one side adorned with pop culture artwork. They also have a private dining area that opens up to a balcony overlooking the residential areas below.
I came here last week with some of my foodie friends and we were really impressed with the quality of the dishes they presented. It was a fun afternoon spent with amazing food and new discoveries.
We started with some refreshing beverages like the Melon Cucumber (P145) and the Pineapple Blueberry (P145). They also have beers and alocholic items like the Hoegaarden Rosée (P245).
The complimentary focaccia bread was great sign of things to come. These soft garlicky breads were served with balsamic vinegar and it’s impossible to have just one piece because they were really good.
One of our pretty appetizers was the Tuna Poke (P480). It came with fresh tuna slices marinated in their homemade poke sauce with cherry tomatoes. My only complaint was that I wanted a bigger serving of this.
We also had a sample of their interesting salads and greens. The Burrata and Grilled Eggplants (P645) has Burrata cheese paired with grilled eggplants, Zucchini and cherry tomatoes tossed in pesto vinaigrette.
Their Grilled Prawn Tropical Salad (P495) is honestly one of the best salads I have ever had. It comes with fresh greens tossed in citrus vinaigrette topped with big juicy cuts of grilled prawn. We actually thought these were lobster slices because they were huge! It also comes with cherry tomatoes, cucumber, and orange.
There’s also the Grilled Chicken Salad (P495) for those who want a meaty and healthy salad. These grilled chicken breast cuts are tossed with salad greens in their homemade caesar dressing and topped with shaved parmesan.
One of Maillard Poblacion’s signature dishes is the Pasta Mechado (P595). This is the chef’s family heirloom recipe that he proudly features at Maillard. The Filipino mechado is deconstructed into a Western pasta with its slow-simmered beef brisket braised in tomato sauce and spices. It’s a unique combination that actually works!
I also liked their Prawn & Clams Spaghetti (P545). This is Maillard’s version of the vongole with its seafood items steamed and sautéed in good olive oil, chiles, garlic confit and spices drizzled with homemade pesto oil.
For our main dishes, we tried the Grilled Tuna (P845) which was grilled medium rare and paired with Mediterranean couscous salad tossed with almonds, dried apricots, prunes, and chimichurri.
We also had their Pork Sisig which is a kapampangan specialty. Their version of sisig does not include liver and I actually like it better that way.
It’s a trip from East to West as Maillard Poblacion shows us the range of their menu. This time it’s the American favorite Cheeseburger served with potato crisps. The thick and juicy patty was quite filling and it should satisfy any burger lover.
One of the highlights that afternoon was the Paella de Poblacion (P1495) which is Maillard’s version of the seafood paella. This huge serving is filled with prawns, clams, mussels, squid, plus chorizo and is made using local rice. I love the combination of all these seafood items in one dish.
Of course, as a certified steak lover, my own favorite was obviously the USDA Choice Ribeye Steak (P2495). This gorgeous steak can be cooked from rare to well-done and is paired with sautéed vegetables, garlic, and mushrooms.
Our steak was cooked medium and it was just heavenly! It came with a savory steak sauce that you can pour on the beef. You can also order sides to go with your steak including Mashed Potatoes (P175), Steak Rice (P175), Mac and Cheese (P185) and others.
Maillard Poblacion also features a respectable wine list so you can order a glass of red wine to pair with your premium steak.
Lastly, end your meals on a sweet note with these colorful desserts. The Apple Crumble Pie (P395) is another fusion of East and West as it is topped with kesong puti ice cream. There’s also the Blueberry Cheesecake (P355) with its thick and creamy cheesecake.
We would like to thank the owners and staff of Maillard Poblacion for letting us experience their own brand of Filipino fusion cuisine. There are so many outstanding dishes that we sampled so I highly recommend this place for those who want to try something new. They are planning to introduce cocktails on the menu and may be featuring degustation dinners as well in the near future, so we are definitely looking forward to that. Congratulations Maillard Poblacion on your successful opening!

Kabsat Grill and Restaurant 🍹❤️‍🔥
⁣We met my Tita's granddaughter, Eyang, in 2017. She is a shy little girl whose easily bribed with chocolates and candies. Since then, my mom has come to love her. We hadn't seen her in months because of the pandemic, so my mother took her to lunch with our dogs at Kabsat.
Tumblr media
➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖
⁣Here is our total bill for 5 pax: ₱2,379.00
1️⃣ Set C (Sinigang na Tuna Belly, Lechon Kawali, Beef Ampalaya, Rice, Iced Tea) - PHP 1350.00
2️⃣ Sisig Pizza - PHP 499.00⁣
3️⃣ Pasta Arrabbiata🥇- PHP 200.00⁣
4️⃣ Blueberry Cheesecake Frappe🥈- PHP 170.00
5️⃣ Tiramisu Frappe - PHP 160.00
➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖
Their blueberry frappe tastes delectable, but their tiramisu is overly sweet. The portions are not worth the price. Their sisig pizza doesn't taste like sisig, but the crust is pleasantly soft and chewy. If you want a better experience, I recommend classic pizza flavors instead. Sadly, their lechon kawali is too tough to eat. It's hard to get a hold of their servers and sometimes they give you incomplete silverware. While it's still an alright place overall, it just doesn't offer the scenic views that most folks come to Marilaque for in the first place.

We ate at Nono's for my sister-in-laws' pamamanhikan. AJ & I got the fried chicken and sisig — keri na; hindi ko masabing babalikan ko sya for sisig pero siguro babalikan ko sya for pasta? Mukhang masarap e.
We chose this color kasi para di sya masasagasaan pag nasa kalsada.
