Thirteen Days

Entry number 2 into the @bechloe-week Weekley Bechloe mini-challenge. This for the prompt ‘quarantine’.

Thirteen Days

It was only day 6 of lockdown but LA already had a death toll. The rising count statewide was actually what finally got the state government to act. It was scary as hell but Chloe was in lockdown with her favorite person in the entire world. Her roommate, up and coming musician, and the girl she had been in love with for nearly a decade, Beca Mitchell.

Chloe suspected that she would have been in a much worse state of mind if not for Beca. Chloe was suffering from information overload on a near-daily basis before lunch. Beca had on more than one occasion hidden both of their phones and laptops behind the locked door to what had originally been designated as Chloe's bedroom but quickly became a guestroom/Beca's home studio space, and removed the batteries from all the remotes except for the blu-ray player that had Netflix to keep Chloe from looking up any more doom and gloom. And Chloe was grateful. Yesterday had been especially bad. Chloe had come across a pair of reports of deaths that blew a hole the size of the 405 in the claims that 'only the elderly and immunocompromised had to worry'. The first was a college athlete without a single health problem. He was the same age Chloe had been the day she met Beca. The second was a 13-year-old girl. She had spent hours curled up in Beca's arms alternating between crying and having panic attacks as the reality of the situation set in. Beca had run a marathon of Disney movies in their shared bedroom the whole rest of the day until Chloe had drifted off to sleep.

The next morning Chloe was making a sizable breakfast of all of Beca's favorites to bring her in bed to thank her for everything she did the day before. She glanced at the clock figuring she had enough time to finish before Beca woke up. She had just finished plating the food and was turning to the fridge to get the orange juice when her entire world stopped at the sound of a violent coughing fit coming from the bedroom. Her mind immediately flashed back to the last time they had gone to the store to stock up when the rumors of the lockdown started getting serious. The store had been packed. Despite all the talk of social distancing, Chloe would have been shocked if there was a total of six feet of open space in the entire store. That had been a week before the lockdown order had been given. Thirteen days ago.

Chloe sprinted to the bedroom. She slammed the door open to find Beca doubled over, still coughing. The covers on the bed had been kicked away from her body. Her face was flushed, which could have been attributed to the coughing fit. But the sheen of sweat over every inch of exposed skin Chloe could see was not the fault of coughing.

“Oh god no,” Chloe whispered. She rushed forward nearly jumping onto the bed. “Beca!”

Her coughing continued. She tried to speak only to cough again before she could form any coherent words. Chloe placed a hand on Beca's forehead only to yank it away from her burning skin. Chloe ran into the bathroom and wet a washcloth with cold water. After a few moments of searching, she found a bottle of cough syrup and a digital thermometer. She dashed back to the bed. She opened the bottle and handed it to Beca then started running the cold washcloth over the back of Beca's neck as she tilted her head back swallowing probably more than the recommended dosage.

“Thank you.” Beca croaked as Chloe wiped over her forehead and face, then down her chest and arms.

“I'm calling the doctor,” Chloe said. Not saying ' to find out where to get tested' out loud. But Beca saw the panic growing in her eyes. She turned on the thermometer and waited for it to chime ready. “Open.”

Beca dutifully opened her mouth and closed it again around the annoying plastic and metal probe. As soon as it was in place she watched as Chloe tried her best not to run from the room to get her phone. After several moments she could hear Chloe's voice but couldn't make out what she was saying until she shouted.

“I know the symptoms! They are all over the news and the internet! The last time we were out in public for any reason was thirteen days ago!”

Chloe's voice dropped again but it was obvious she was coming back to the bedroom just as the thermometer beeped.

“Yes, she is running a fever,” Chloe said as she walked up to the bed and plucked it from Beca's mouth. “Shit. It's 100.8, we need to come in today. As soon as possible.”

Beca watched as the tension in Chloe's face started to relax.

“Yes. Both of us. We went to the store to stock up two weeks ago and have been in close contact with each other in our apartment since.” Chloe paused. “Ok. Thank you very much.”

Chloe took the thermometer and the cough syrup back into the bathroom. She swung the door closed behind her so she could lean against the counter and try not to burst into tears. She only managed to stay quiet when she did start crying.

“Chlo?” Came Beca's scratchy voice from the bedroom after several minutes of Chloe not returning from the bathroom.

“Yeah. Just a second.” Chloe called trying to keep her voice even. She wiped at her face and almost considered doing her makeup, but decided that would make it even more obvious since they had both stopped bothering days ago. She slowly pulled open the door and started towards the hallway. “Just stay in bed. I'm going to bring you the breakfast I was fixing.”

Beca started to shuffle pillows around so she could sit up. She had gotten herself set up by the time Chloe returned with her food. She made another trip to get her own breakfast and climbed into bed with Beca.

“What was this for?” Beca rasped.

“I was thanking you for yesterday and all those Disney movies without complaining even once.” Chloe smiled.

“You didn't have too. But I'm glad you did.” Beca said before coughing a few times.

“Our appointment is at one. They have a mini drive-up testing center set up to keep from exposing other people that have other reasons to go to the doctor right now.”

Beca just nodded, not wanting to talk much more than she had to with her throat hurting.

Chloe turned on the tv and started searching Netflix. She turned on something light and kinda mindless to watch while they ate.

After they finished breakfast Chloe went digging in their closet. At the time the lockdown order had gone into effect they hadn't had any orders about wearing masks in public yet, so Chloe hadn't gone looking since they had stocked up enough food for at least another week and a half. She found what she was looking for tucked into a side pocket of her suitcase. She and Beca had joined the Beale family ski trip last year over Christmas. Chloe had gotten them a pair of 'neck warmer ski masks' that looked like a turtleneck that had been removed from its shirt. It could be pulled all the way up over your nose to keep your face warm and Chloe figured that much fabric would be much better than cutting up a t-shirt like the internet was suggesting. But given they weren't even going to have to get out of the car to get tested they might not even need them at all.

Chloe made them some sandwiches and packed them both a lunch because she had no idea how long they might be waiting despite having an appointment. She gathered a clean change of clothes for Beca, who hadn't gotten dressed yet since waking up. All of this in-between sessions of panicked pacing in the living room.

Once Beca was dressed Chloe changed into clothes that were more acceptable to wear in public before hustling Beca out to the car. She ran back inside to grab their packed lunch and took a long slow look around the home that they had built together, fighting back tears again.

Chloe barely heard the music playing in the car as she drove. The trip took less than a quarter as long as she was planning. There were virtually no cars on the road.

“Is it just me or does it feel like we are in the opening scenes of some post-apocalyptic movie and we are like the last people left on earth?” Beca was the one to say it, which itself said how deserted the roads were.

They pulled up outside the doctor's office at 12:15, a full half-hour earlier that Chloe had expected. She saw a small tent in one corner of the parking lot and every other parking spot around that corner blocked off. She drove over and was waved down by a person in essentially a hazmat suit holding a clipboard. Chloe opened the window less than an inch, just enough to communicate.

“Do you have an appointment?” The person said.

“Yes, we do. Mitchell and Beale for 1 o'clock. Sorry we are early, I honestly didn't give any thought to how little traffic there would be.” Chloe said.

“Don't worry about. Everybody has done the same thing. We will get you taken care of as quickly as possible. Just wait in the car and we will hold up a sign with your name when it's your turn. Go ahead and park over there.” The person pointed to the end of the row in front of them. “Should be about 10-15 minutes.”

“Thank you,” Chloe said as she put the car back in gear. “How are you doing Becs?”

Beca shrugged and reclined her seat a bit before curling up.

Chloe watched as Beca nearly dozed off then turned her attention to the team working their way through the few cars waiting. They moved with a practiced efficiency that both impressed and frightened Chloe. She zoned out watching their movements until the person with the clipboard waved to get her attention. They held up a small whiteboard with Mitchell-Beale written on it. Chloe's heart skipped a beat.

Chloe pulled up to the spot she was directed to and rolled down both windows. The workers checked their temperatures with laser thermometers, that Chloe thought were pretty cool. They had both of them stick out their tongues so they could check their throats. Then they performed the test, which was very unpleasant. Before they let them leave they did a second swabbing of their throats.

“We will call you when the results come in. Good luck.” One of the workers said as they stepped back from the car to let them leave.

Chloe could barely bring herself to smile at them as she rolled up their windows. She didn't say a word the entire drive home.

When they got home they both changed back into more comfortable clothes and Beca crawled back into bed and took a nap. Chloe wanted to climb into bed and just hold Beca, but instead, she quietly closed the door before retreating to the living room, turning on the tv for some sound, and began crying again.

Chloe jerked awake at the sound of metal clanging in the kitchen. She looked around in confusion. The sun was setting outside. A blanket slipped off of her as she sat up awkwardly trying to move with a sore back.

She shuffled out to the kitchen to find Beca setting a pot of water on a burner.

“What are you doing?” Chloe said, her voice still thick with sleep.

“I woke up from my nap and you weren't there. I found you asleep on the couch so I covered you with a blanket and watched some tv for a while. Then I was in the mood for ramen. So here we are.” Beca said. Her voice still rough but it was better than it had been that morning.

“Go sit down,” Chloe ordered. “You are sick. I'll fix your food.”

Beca looked like she was going to object right up until Chloe shot her a look that said Beca wasn't going to win this argument. She stepped away from the stove and headed for the living room.

“And thank you for the blanket,” Chloe whispered as she placed a light kiss on Beca's cheek.

The next two days went much the same. Beca slept a lot. Chloe cried a lot and tried not to think about the sore throat she was starting to develop. Beca continued to be stubborn and tried to take care of herself as often as possible. And Chloe almost as often either ordered or, on three different occasions, physically carried Beca to the couch or bed to get her to stop.

The afternoon of the third day, after an especially bad coughing fit, Chloe broke. She started crying in front of Beca for the first time since she woke up sick days ago.

“Hey hey hey. It's ok Chlo.” Beca said as she gathered Chloe into her arms and started stroking her hair.

“No. It's not ok Beca.” Chloe's voice cracked. “I can't do this without you.”

“Can't do what?”

“This! Everything. My whole life. I can't lose you.” Chloe said between sobs.

“You aren't going to lose me Chlo.”

“You don't know that! And I don't want to live the rest of my life without you.”

“What the hell Chloe?”

“Beca I am trying to tell you that I'm in love with you and I don't want you to die!”

Beca stared opening and closing her mouth for what seemed like an hour.

A phone ringing startled both of them. Beca reached over and picked up her phone from her nightstand.

“Hello? … Speaking. … I see. … Both of us? … Ok. … Yes, the one on file. … Yes. Thank you.” Beca hung up. After she set down her phone she took a slow deep breath. “Chloe. I love you too. I'm in love with you too.”

“On no. Nononononono.” Chloe started crying again. She grabbed her own phone and started furiously started typing. “Fuck!”

“What?” Beca asked as Chloe started typing again.

“Apparently the courts aren't considered 'essential services' right now. Maybe they haven't locked down Vegas yet.” Chloe said distractedly.

“What are you talking about Chlo?”

“If one or both of us is going to die in the next few weeks I want to die knowing I got to be married to the love of my life.” Chloe looked up at the sound of Beca gasping. And found tears running down her smiling face.

Beca slowly reached out and took Chloe's phone from her.

“How 'bout you take me on at least a few dates first? But first, you need to make a run to the pharmacy at the Ralph's down the street.”

“Wha...but the internet says there's no treatment yet.”

“They ran a preliminary test here, but they have to send it to the CDC to make sure.”

“And...?”

“They came back negative for both of us. The test that came back positive was for strep throat.”

“So you're going to be ok?” A smile started spreading across Chloe's lips.

“Yeah. After a few more days of this fucking sore throat. And you're probably gonna get it too so they sent prescriptions for both of us to the pharmacy.” Beca grinned. “Maybe you can pick up some pizza while you are out and we can have that first date. Unless you still want to jump right to getting married.”

“After all this time it still surprises me that I am in love with such a pain in my ass.” Chloe laughed.

“'All this time'? Just how long have you been in love with me?”

“Think I'm going to let you wonder about that for awhile. I have to make a trip to the store.” Chloe said as she hopped off the bed giggling.

“Now who's the pain in the ass?” Beca called after her as she skipped down the hall. The sound of Chloe's laughter echoed back into the bedroom and it was the most beautiful thing Beca had ever heard...so far.

It’s late when he gets back. A few hours after sunset, probably, though he's not exactly sure how many. His time-sense has gotten all out of whack lately. He always gets confused at the tail end of summer, when the days aren't the length they're supposed to be, and he's gotten used to having a chrono on-hand, as it were. Even if it's not his hand.

There's just enough moonlight coming through the skylight that he can navigate his way through the dark, empty atrium, picking his way past the bodies they left where they fell. If the Institute comes looking, they'll find a den of raiders that took advantage of their distraction to steal their chemist, and a bloodbath that followed when a Brotherhood squad came through to clean up the mess. As far as anyone would be able to tell, they were never here at all.

His knees go a little weak when he spots the short, lumpy shadow of the packs at the base of the steps. Both packs. She's still here. She waited for him.

He's not sure if that feeling in his chest is relief or terror. Maybe both.

His head aches as he climbs the steps to the second floor, moving dreamy and slow, like he's underwater. He hasn't slept since yesterday afternoon. Apparently it shows, based on how hard High Rise lobbied for him to crash in one of the spare rooms, but Deacon just dropped off his report and headed out with a smile. There were one too many curious looks, people wondering why he was on his own. Too many questions he wasn’t prepared to answer.

There's a door open at the end of the hall: their makeshift bedroom, the one with no external windows and a minimal amount of blood on the walls. It's where they slept before, waiting for the op, and it's where Whisper's sleeping now: curled up in a little ball on the stained mattress, with one hand on the knife under her pillow and the other tugging her too-big coat up over her shoulders like a blanket. Her face seems hollow and strange in the faint greenish light of her Pip-boy, sitting on the upturned crate she's using as a night table. She doesn't usually leave it turned on when she's not wearing it, says it runs down the battery. She only leaves it active like that when she's trying to keep her comms line open. She must still be wearing her earpiece. Fell asleep waiting to hear from him.

Ah, fuck.

He's not sure if she heard him coming up the steps, but she doesn't move when he comes in and sits down on the end of the mattress, so he knows she's awake. He waits, staring silently at the gang tag spray-painted on the wall, for her to say something. Yell at him, maybe, for running off. Demand what the fuck he thought he was doing. Hell, even make a joke—it'd tear at his insides, making light of this, but what the fuck, right? It's what they do.

But she says nothing, and that's when he knows what he has to do.

"When I was young," he says to the wall, "a hell of a long time ago, I was… well, scum."

She stays silent, but he senses movement, quickly arrested. When he sneaks a glance at her out of the corner of his eye, her eyes are open and fixed on his face. He looks quickly away.

"I was a bigot. A very… violent bigot. I ran with a gang in University Point. We called ourselves the U-P Deathclaws."

"Catchy," she says, her voice hoarse from the clinging remnants of sleep.

"I know, right? That's what happens when you let teenagers name things."

"No taste at all," she agrees. Her heavy-lidded gaze is watchful. "So what'd you do?"

"Oh, the usual. Drank, stole shit, took inadvisable amounts of chems, kicked around trash cans—you know, the same shit hooligans always do when they're trying to make themselves look tough."

"Sounds familiar." She hauls herself to a sitting position, arms wrapped loosely around her knees, her back to the wall. Her face is fully clean; she must have found some solvent to scrub off the last of the grease paint. The green light from her Pip-boy gives her face a gaunt, somber cast. "We all make mistakes when we're young."

"A mistake or two, yeah. But what I did…" He takes a breath, lets it out slow. "One of the older boys, he had a real mad-on about the Institute. His mom disappeared when he was a kid—everyone figured she just took off, but his dad swore up and down the Institute must've taken her, and we all believed it. So when we thought someone might be a synth, it just seemed right, y'know? We'd make their lives hell, and it was just. It was fair. The Institute took from us, so we sure as fuck were going to take back from them. Any fucking way we could."

From the look on her face, she already knows where this story is going to go. But he tells her anyway: the whole sordid story, piece by excruciating piece. She doesn't say anything when he tells her about the beatings, and doesn't say anything when the beatings graduated to a lynching, and she keeps on not saying anything when he tells her about getting out, starting over halfway across the Commonwealth. The only time she makes a sound is when he tells her about Barbara—he hears a quick intake of breath when he says her name, so quiet he wouldn't have caught it if he hadn't been listening. But when he looks over, she's just watching him, her face and body arranged into perfect, doll-like stillness. Giving him nothing.

"And that's when I got approached by a recruiter from HQ," he says, finally. "I guess they figured I'd be sympathetic, seeing that I'd lost my wife. And, well." He shrugs, a short minimalist roll of his shoulders. "What I did afterwards."

"They didn't know you used to run with the Claws?"

It's the first time she's spoken in a while, and the familiar pitch of her sleep-roughened voice tears at his throat like a feral's teeth. Deacon looks down at his hands, the fingers twining restlessly together. "It'd been a few years, and I using another name. And I'd just killed everyone who could recognize me from that life. Still. Think I spent the first year, at least, waiting for the other shoe to drop." Until the Institute almost wiped them out, anyway. Then it was too late. "Never did. Nobody ever figured me out."

"You are good at what you do," she says, neutrally. She's not wearing her shades, but she might as well be, with how little he can get off her face. "So that's how you ended up with the Railroad?"

"Yeah. That's me. The best con I ever pulled, after getting Barbara to marry me. Not like I was any more honest with her than anyone else." He stretches his legs out in front of him, studies the toes of his boots so he doesn't look at her face. "That's who I am, you know. A liar. You think I'm like this because of the job? Hell, no. I'm a fraud right down to the core. Always have been, always will be."

Out of the corner of his eye he sees her open her mouth, but keeps going before she can say anything.

"I mean, why do I even lie anymore? Who could possibly give a shit? But I do. I can't stop. Everyone—Tom, Dez, even that asshole Carrington—they deserve to be in the Railroad. You? You're a fucking hero. You belong here. I don't. I'm everything that's wrong with the whole fucking Commonwealth."

"Deacon-"

Her voice is shredded. There's a shine of tears in her dark eyes, and he holds up a hand to stop her, panic scrabbling inside his ribs. "Let me finish, okay? I had a whole speech here."

She opens her mouth, and then closes it again, very deliberately. He sees her twining her hands together, as if to keep herself from reaching out, and has to look away.

"You're my best friend, you know? Probably, uh. Probably the only one, since we're on honesty hour here. You're… you're pretty much all I've got. So." He takes a breath, feels it rattle anxiously in his chest when he exhales. "I know I don't deserve for you to be okay with this. And, hell, I'm not even asking for it. I just…" He stops. Clears his throat. Tries, and fails, to bring himself to look her in the eye. "I just figured you should know."

Whisper says nothing—and keeps on saying nothing, for so long that he eventually, inevitably, has to give in and sneak a glance back towards her. She's still watching him, with that steady, assessing expression: the same way she studies raider dens and mutie camps and every stupid, gullible mark that wears their heart on their sleeve, like a lever just waiting to be pulled. She's never looked at him like that before and he hopes she never fucking does it again, because right now he feels more naked than he's ever been, fully dressed and wearing his shades and still stripped to the bone by the brutal clockwork efficiency of her regard. Whatever dusty fragments of honesty he managed to pry up for her ruthless inspection, in that moment he knows that she's observed and cataloged a dozen things more he didn't even notice. He's taught her too well for her to do anything else.

When he finally manages to nerve himself up to catch her gaze, however, she still doesn't say anything. Just rolls up to her knees and shuffles down the length of the mattress, tapping the earpiece of his shades with an inquisitive expression. Gut churning, but basically unable to tell her no to just about anything right now, he nods and slides them off, tucking them into the front pocket of his shirt. She meets his gaze, makes sure to hold it, and then kneels up and swings one leg over his thighs.

His hands come up automatically to to steady her, then drop away to the mattress like they've been burned. She shakes her head and settles more firmly into his lap, clutching his sleeve for balance, and he reaches up again, tentatively, to cup around her hips. She smiles, a little sadly, and then leans down to press a kiss very precisely to the middle of his forehead.

Deacon closes his eyes against the stupid, inexorable prickle of tears, and she kisses each eyelid, light as a butterfly.

"You do what you gotta do to survive, D." Her voice is a low murmur; intimate, almost confessional. The kindness in her dark eyes detonates in his chest like a frag mine. "That's all there is. You take one step, and the next, and you tell yourself whatever you have to to keep moving, because if you don't you'll fall down and you'll never get back up again. I know. I know."

"Whisper-"

"And you don't have to apologize to anybody for it," she continues, relentless and beautiful with the same steely determination that takes out raiders and muties and Kellogg and anything that gets in her way. "Not Dez, not Carrington, not me. Especially not to me. Okay?"

There's really only one thing he can say. "Yeah, okay." It takes a moment to remember how to move, but when he does he slides his hand up under her hair to cup the back of her neck the way she likes. "Copy that, partner. Loud and clear."

Relief flashes across her face like a lightning strike. "Good. That's- yeah." She leans into his grip, breathing a sigh he feels down into his bones, and closes her eyes. "That's good. That's exactly what I needed to hear."

They sit together for a while after that, just the two of them in the quiet. After a bit Whisper shifts so that she's sitting sideways in his lap, her head tucked into the curve of his shoulder but determinedly keeping her grip on his sleeve. He wraps his arms around her, rests his chin on the top of her head, and closes his eyes, gratitude a hazy burn at the back of his throat.

He doesn't know what the fuck he did to deserve this, but damned if he's going to look a gift horse in the mouth.

Eventually, she stirs, nuzzling a haphazard kiss to the underside of his jaw. "We should sleep," she murmurs into his neck, and he shivers at the hot wash of her breath against his skin.

"Probably a good idea," he agrees, but he doesn't move until she does, lurching out of his lap with a grunt. He subtly stretches out one leg, and then the other, trying to shake away the tingles as blood goes flooding back, and then drops next to her longways on the mattress, not bothering to take off his boots. She immediately rolls over and fits herself against his back, wrapping one skinny arm around his middle and fitting her knees up behind his like silverware in a drawer.

"Thank you," she says, into his shoulder. Already half-asleep, he grunts something that might have been an interrogative, and she sighs and nuzzles against the knob of his spine. "For coming back. For telling me. For being here. Just. Thanks."

His jaw works for a moment before he can speak. "Anytime, partner," he manages, and then she flicks off the light on her Pip-boy, and there's nothing but silence.

He would have thought he’d sleep for shit, given everything that went down last night, but when he wakes up the next morning he feels almost refreshed. He's not sure exactly what time it is, their room being distinctly lacking in windows, but there's a hint of dampness to the air slipping through the leaky siding, a breath of fog the sun hasn't yet had a chance to burn off. Still early, then. They probably weren't out more than four, five hours at most.

They shifted positions sometime in the night, and Deacon lies there for a while, staring up at the ceiling and enjoying the warm, heavy weight of Whisper sprawled across his front. She's breathing quietly into his collarbone, not quite a snore, and he'd love nothing more than to let her stay there forever, but they do, after all, have somewhere to be.

"Whisper," he murmurs, running a hand down her back. "Whisper, hey. Time to get up, pal."

"Kill you," she mumbles indistinctly into his shoulder. "To death."

"Wow, that's rude." He sets his chin on top of her head and hums a jaunty tune, some old pre-War ad jingle that never fails to get a rise out of her. Right on time, she makes an annoyed grunt and digs her chin into his collarbone. "Ouch! Here I am, trying to make sure you enjoy the fruits of your labor, and you can't even muster some basic civility." Nothing. "C'mon, gorgeous, it's a beautiful morning out there. "So shoot 'em." She makes a spirited attempt to burrow down into his ribcage, tucking her face defensively under his collar. "They're probably Watchers anyway."

"You're such a pessimist," he says fondly, and tweaks one of her curls. "I'm serious, partner, time to rise and shine. Daylight's a-wastin', and you wanted to be across the river by lunchtime."

She finally deigns to open her eyes, tilting her head back just enough to look at him in muzzy-eyed confusion. "I did?"

He smiles down at her, helplessly affectionate. "You've got to pick up Valentine for his procedure, remember?"

"You make it sound like he's going to the vet," she says automatically, but then comprehension filters into her eyes. "Oh. Shit. Already?"

"They say time does fly when you're having fun," he agrees. "And as much as I'd love to keep the party going, we do have an appointment to keep. You know how much I care about punctuality."

"I believe your exact words were 'for suckers.'"

"Exactly! So no one will expect us on time. It's all about keeping 'em off their toes."

"If you could just dial down the cheer like, at least thirty percent, that would be just great." She hauls herself into a vaguely vertical position and then just hangs there, elbows on her knees, staring resentfully at the wall. He nudges her in the back and she grunts. "What? I'm up, leave me alone."

"You're lying," he says, very kindly.

"Takes one," she grumbles back, but puts a hand on his thigh and squeezes in wordless acknowledgement. That's when he knows: she's not going to bring it up, ever again.

God. He really doesn't deserve her.

"Sticks and stones, Livvy-love," he chirps, and grins when she levels him with a death glare. "What? I'm just getting into character."

"I hate that you're a morning person, just so you know," she informs him, and stumbles out of bed. "If you don't have coffee ready by the time we leave, there are going to be consequences."

President Donald Trump impeached for ‘incitement of insurrection’

The House of Representatives has voted to impeach President Donald Trump — making him the only president in American history to be impeached twice.

Unlike his first impeachment in 2019, 10 Republicans joined Democrats to charge Trump for the “incitement of insurrection” for his role in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol with a final vote of 232-197.

Some Republicans may have feared for their own safety if they voted for impeachment, Rep. Adam Kinzinger, one of those who voted against Trump, said. Kinzinger told ABC’s “Powerhouse Politics” podcast that some members of his party are likely holding back from voting for impeachment due to fear of highlighting their own participation in supporting the president’s false claims of election fraud.

Democrat Jason Crow, of Colorado, relayed similar thoughts in an interview with MSNBC on Wednesday morning.

“I had a lot of conversations with my Republican colleagues last night, and a couple of them broke down in tears talking to me and saying that they are afraid for their lives if they vote for this impeachment,” he said.

Changes To House Rules

After Democrats took control of the House in the 116th Congress, they voted to change some rules from the previous session of Congress when Republicans were in control. Some of the changes appear below.

PAYGO: Democrats approved PAYGO, a provision that requires legislation that would increase the deficit to be offset by spending cuts or revenue increases.

Ethics: Democrats made changes to House ethics rules that required all House members to take ethics training, not just new members. The rules also required members to reimburse taxpayers for settlements that that result from a members discrimination of someone based on race, religion, sex, national origin, or disability, among other things. Lawmakers were also prohibited from sitting on corporate boards.

Climate change committee: Democrats created a new climate change committee to address the issue. The committee was not given subpoena power or the ability to bring bills to the floor.

South Carolinas 2012 legislative elections were marred by a series of events that eventually led to nearly 250 candidates being removed from the primary ballot. Here is a brief timeline of those events, followed by a detailed account of what happened.

Deadline for candidates to file a required statement of economic interest. Many candidates from both parties fail to do so.

Week of April 16: The State Ethics Commission gives candidates an additional 10 days to turn in the form. Democrats call the decision unfair while Republicans say that they are okay with it.

May 2: The South Carolina Supreme Court rules any candidate who did not file the form must be removed from the ballot. Calls for a rehearing are denied.

May 9: While the Senate attempts to pass legislation to allow challengers back on ballot, attorney Todd Kincannon requests a delay in the primary. Both efforts fail.

Number Of House Members Per State

Unlike the U.S. Senate, which consists of two members from each state, the geographic makeup of the House is determined by the population of each state. The only stipulation spelled out in the U.S. Constitution comes in Article I, Section 2, which guarantees each state, territory or district at least one representative.

The Constitution also states that there can be no more than one representative in the House for every 30,000 citizens.

The number of representatives each state gets in the House of Representatives is based on population. That process, known as reapportionment, occurs every 10 years after the decennial population count conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau.

U.S. Rep. William B. Bankhead of Alabama, an opponent of the legislation, called the Permanent Apportionment Act of 1929 an abdication and surrender of vital fundamental powers. One of the functions of Congress, which created the census, was to adjust the number of seats in Congress to reflect the number of people living in the United States, he said.

An Incoming Class Of History

Several of the newly elected state representatives are making history.;

The Republican Madison Cawthorn, 25, who beat the Democrat Moe Davis to represent North Carolinas 11th Congressional District, will become the youngest member of Congress in modern history.

The Democrat Cori Bush is set to become the first Black congresswoman from Missouri after winning in the states 1st Congressional District.

The Democrats Mondaire Jones and Ritchie Torres will also be the first openly gay Black men to serve in Congress, after winning in New Yorks 17th and 15th districts respectively.

And nine out of the eleven Republicans who have so far unseated incumbent Democrats are women wins that will drastically expand the representation of women and especially of women of color in the House Republican caucus.

Currently, there are just 13 voting female Republican representatives in the House and 11 female Republican incumbents who ran for reelection in 2020.

Republicans Can Win The Next Elections Through Gerrymandering Alone

Even if voting patterns remain the same, Republicans could still win more seats in Congress through redistricting

In Washington, the real insiders know that the true outrages are whats perfectly legal and that its simply a gaffe when someone accidentally blurts out something honest.

And so it barely made a ripple last week when a Texas congressman said aloud whats supposed to be kept to a backroom whisper: Republicans intend to retake the US House of Representatives in 2022 through gerrymandering.

We have redistricting coming up and the Republicans control most of that process in most of the states around the country, Representative Ronny Jackson told a conference of religious conservatives. That alone should get us the majority back.

Hes right. Republicans wont have to win more votes next year to claim the US House.

In fact, everyone could vote the exact same way for Congress next year as they did in 2020 when Democratic candidates nationwide won more than 4.7m votes than Republicans and narrowly held the chamber but under the new maps that will be in place, the Republican party would take control.

If Republicans aggressively maximize every advantage and crash through any of the usual guardrails and they have given every indication that they will theres little Democrats can do. And after a 2019 US supreme court decision declared partisan gerrymandering a non-justiciable political issue, the federal courts will be powerless as well.

WASHINGTON, May 12 – House of Representatives Republicans on Wednesday ejected Liz Cheney from their leadership ranks as punishment for repudiating former U.S. President Donald Trumps false claims of a stolen election, but she remained defiant and made plans to seek re-election to Congress.

Her ouster from her party’s No. 3 post in the Democratic-led House unfolded in mere minutes in a closed-door meeting. The action signaled that Trump, despite losing to Democrat Joe Biden in November, has solidified his hold over House Republicans as he jockeys to play a major role in the 2022 congressional elections and flirts with running for president again in 2024.

Cheney’s decision, disclosed by a spokesperson, to seek re-election next year for a fourth two-year term as the lone House member representing Wyoming appears to set the stage for a clash between competing factions in a Republican Party facing a moment of reckoning over its future – either following Trump’s lead or finding a new path. Six Republicans already have lined up to challenge her in a heavily Republican state that Trump won with about 70 percent of the vote last year.

After her removal, Cheney came out swinging, telling reporters moments later that she would lead the fight to bring her party back to “fundamental principles of conservatism.”

“We must go forward based on truth. We cannot both embrace the big lie and embrace the Constitution,” Cheney said.

Arguments For Expanding The Number Of House Members

Advocates;for increasing the number of seats in the House say such a move would increase the quality of representation by reducing the number of constituents each lawmaker represents. Each House member now represents about 710,000 people.

The group ThirtyThousand.org argues that the framers of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights never intended for the population of each congressional district to exceed 50,000 or 60,000. “The principle of proportionally equitable representation has been abandoned,” the group argues.

Another argument for increasing the size of the House is that is would diminish the influence of lobbyists. That line of reasoning assumes that lawmakers would be more closely connected to their constituents and therefore less likely to listen to special interests.

What Activists And Democrats Want To Happen

For years, Democrats and activists alike have pushed for an independent redistricting commission to draw Indianas maps. Their argument is that only an independent group can do so without party influence.;

But Republicans have long stifled any legislation that would make that change.;

Now activists such as Common Cause and;All IN for Democracy; and Democrats alike are asking for a transparent process with more time for analysis of the proposed maps and public comment after the proposed maps are released.;

SIZABLE PORTION OF BIG SUR WASHED AWAY

America has been blessed with many beautiful nature scenes. One is Big Sur in California. Officiously known as California Highway 1.

Many years ago, I was in the area of Big Sur to play golf at Pebble Beach. My tee time one of the days was in the afternoon. I decided to see the Big Sur I had heard so much about.

Rented a car and was on my way.

The coast of California near San Francisco and running through Carmel is one huge cliff. Not as high as those in Santorini. High enough, however. At least 1,500 to 2,000 feet up.

A highway was carved out which runs sometimes on top of the cliff and other times a road has been cut into the side of the cliff.

Below the Pacific Ocean! Majestic waves pounding the base of the cliff.

Majestic! Beautiful! The only way to describe Big Sur.

I was sorry I was alone. The drive is one to be shared with someone with whom you have a close attachment. Such is the mood!

This morning’s news carries the sad story that a significant portion of the highway has been washed away by a winter storm. Obviously that portion of the highway will be closed till repaired. Could take quite a while.

One last observation. There are very few homes along the way. Only nature in all its pristine glory.

Joe Manchin is Governor of West Virginia. A Democrat who seems over the years to have voted more Republican than Democrat.

Can’t blame him. West Virginia a deeply Republican state. Coal mining a major industry.

It was announced yesterday that West Virginia was a “vaccine success” story. Eighty five percent of its doses requirement received and used. Yes, 85 percent of West Virginia has been vaccinated.

Only North Dakota has done better.

Why West Virginia and North Dakota can do it and the other 48 states still struggling to get going, I do not understand.

The numbers reported were by the CDC and not West Virginia itself.

A civil servant in charge of the program said it was the result of “creativity” and “innovation.” West Virginia studied what was happening in the rest of the U.S. and came up with their own plan.

The State did not activate the federal partnership with CVS and Walgreens. Instead went it alone.

West Virginia is more rural than big city. The State went to the small independent drug stores. Many mom and pop operations. State officials thought such would prove productive. Obviously, they were correct.

The small drug stores went to the people’s homes and farms. They did not wait for them to come to town for a shot.

Many persons live 40-50 miles away from the big cities and chain drug stores.

One story told involves a mom and pop type operation with a couple of employees. They stored the vaccine in a special refrigerator in their home kitchen. Six every morning they were at their kitchen table figuring where to go that day and arranging the vaccines to be carried.

It all worked! God bless Joe Manchin and the people of West Virginia!

I would like Florida’s Governor DeSantis to plan better as Joe Manchin did. Every DeSantis planned program thus far has failed. Looks good up front and then peters out.

DAY 6…..Greece The First Time

Greece is a time bomb waiting to explode.

The people are unhappy. The financial crisis is choking them.

Economics is the topic of conversation everyday. Expressed with increased vehemence each day.

Riots around the corner. Protests already. The situation a tinderbox ready to ignite.

I was on my way to the Metro Underground beneath the plaza in front of Parliament yesterday. Thousands of people walk the plaza hourly. In one corner near the entrance to the Metro, several young people were carrying signs. One was talking into a loudspeaker.

Speaking Greek, of course. I neither speak nor understand the language.

About 50 persons milling about listening. I mingled in the crowd. I was able to pick up the gist of the protest from comments made by onlookers. Economics. The euro.

Listeners aroused. The name Merkle caused several to spit on the ground.

Recently, Greece had an election. Neither the left nor right obtained enough votes to control the government. So the Greek Parliament is floating along. The country in limbo.

A new election is scheduled some time in June.

Italy’s former Prime Minster Berlusconi announced yesterday that unless Germany backed off the euro, Italy should return to the lira. Germany appears the only European nation benefiting from the euro. The Greeks and Italians dislike the Germans. They feel Germany is being hard ass about doing something corrective regarding the economy. Whatever might be done would not be to the financial benefit of Germany.

Beware. I sense bad days ahead. Keep in mind that we live in a global world. Whatever happens in Greece and elsewhere affects us in the United States.

I spent 3 hours doing yesterday’s blog. I sat in one position and typed for the three hours. When I finished, my legs from my knees to my ankles were full of fluid. I went back to my room, took a fluid pill and lay on the bed three hours till the problem was relieved. Today I am getting up and moving about on occasion as I write.

I took the Metro Underground. It is a subway. I have not been on a subway since my senior year in college in New York City in 1957.

The purpose of taking the Metro was to visit Acropolis and the Parthenon. Way up a hill. Better to ride than to walk. One stop on the Metro.

A problem. The Metro Acropolis stop was still at least a mile from the entrance. An uphill walk. At a constant 30 degree angle. In the boiling sun.

Not my cup of tea. I had to stop not several times, but many times to sit and rest. As I sat, many passed me by going to the top. Many older than I. Some obviously infirmed. While Louis sat, they marched.

The first part of the return trip was a problem also. The initial path down was of marble. Huge irregular blocks. Slippery. Small cuts in the marble to minimize the sliding factor. I slid, did not fall. It was not easy.

The trip was worth it. I was a part of history during the time I was on top. Acropolis, the Parthenon and other smaller temples. The most stimulating factor for me was the realization that all I saw was constructed BEFORE Christ. Way before.

Acropolis a temple to the Gods. The most exciting feature of the Parthenon the columns.

The smaller temples had columns also. However, they were copies. Some time back, there was a violent earthquake. The columns could not handle the movement. To protect them from a future abuse by nature, they were removed and replaced. The originals sit in a museum at a point down the hill.

Two generationally different fat cats responsible for much of what has been done. Pericles back in the 400s BC. The Rockefeller Foundation in recent times.

All the buildings are fragile. Thousands of years old. Modern man is constantly working to preserve that which was. There are scaffolds and cranes every where.

There had to be a topping on the cake after such a glorious walk back in history. It came in the evening. Dinner at Dionysus Restaurant.

Dionysus sits at the foot of the historical mountain. About a mile away. It is a huge outdoor restaurant. Top self. Great lamb. Greater view. Expensive. Worth it.

There in front of my eyes on top of the hill sat the Acropolis and Parthenon. All brightly lite. Awe inspiring. The viewing emotional.

Traditionally Dionysus was the God of the grape harvest. He was also known as Bacchus. Party boy! Festivals galore!

Did I sleep last night? Finally! The first full night’s sleep since starting this trip. I hope the jet lag is behind me.

Today is my last in Athens. Tomorrow I leave for Santorini. I still have not danced nor thrown dishes around. Hopefully tonight. There is a little Zorba in each of us.

Yesterday was Ally’s birthday. Seven years old. I forgot. I will Skype her later and make up for it. I selected a birthday gift for her before I left and gave it to her. So I am only half bad in forgetting.

I know not what today holds. Whatever, it will be good. I am in a place where it cannot be bad. And tonight….hopefully dancing and dish breaking.

Back to today’s news.

Trump continues to have lawyer problems. Big ones! No one wants to represent him in the Impeachment trial. First Giuliani and some others withdrew or could not accept the responsibility for various reasons. A new team of 5 came on board.

The five lawyers withdrew with the trial scheduled to begin 10 days from today. The reason was a difference of opinion as to how the trial should be handled.

Trump insisted election fraud be the top item. His attorney’s disagreed. The trial should surround impeachment issues and not whether Trump was elected. Sixty one courts had already shot Trump down on that issue.

I admire the attorneys for withdrawing. A doctor does not let the patient tell him how to do the brain surgery surgery he is facing. So too with the attorney-client situation. A competent attorney would do as the 5 attorneys did. My way or the highway.

L. Lin Wood is a Georgia attorney who brought several election fraud conspiracy cases to court. Each wherein he represented Trump in one fashion or another.

The Georgia Bar Association has now entered upon the scene.The Bar has asked Wood to undergo a mental health evaluation. Lin has refused. Refusal could mean suspension or disbarment.

Lin has opted to fight. He has taken the position he did nothing wrong, only exercised his Constitutional right to free speech.

Amazing isn’t it how many of those who have tried to help Trump eventually end up behind the eight ball.

What happened to the Republican House and Senate members who feared for their lives on January 6, who hid under tables and benches behind locked doors, etc.

With the Trump impeachment trial around the corner, their tune has changed. Poor Donald! He didn’t tell the demonstrators to do bad, etc.

Whores one and all!

January 6 reminds me of the Reichstag fire in Germany on February 27, 1933. Hitler inspired. The fire solidified the establishment of Nazi Germany. Hitler’s government became entrenched.

The U.S. is not yet entrenched in any movement opposite to what it has been for many years. However, it could be moving that way. People on both sides are aroused.

Friends With Benefits: Bill Skarsgard... Chapter 6

The next few days passed in a blur and things with Bill were different, a nice different.

He was so invested in me and even kept his word, he didn't push me to talk about what happened on the hill top, he was waiting for me to be ready and bring it up myself.

This morning I'd awoken to him pushing the hair from my face and placing a lingering kiss on my temple.

My eyes fluttered open and I was met with the sight of Bill leaning over the bed, I smiled sleepily at him and I lifted myself up to lean against the headboard, holding the sheets to my chest.

I was so tired from the last few days on set that I'd slept through the night and not even felt Bill get up or heard him get ready.

"Where are you going?" I asked, looking him up and down.

"I have a meeting."

He was clad in a fitted black shirt that was tucked into slim, dark grey trousers that were fastened with a black belt and his hair was gelled into place.

I bit my lip and looked up at him through my eyelashes.

"Don't." He warned, narrowing his eyes.

I tilted my head at him and smiled innocently, before pulling him down onto the bed with me and pushing him onto his back.

I dropped all the sheets around me and climbed on top of him, straddling him and pinning his arms by his head.

He groaned but watched as my breasts bounced and he shifted under me, it was pretty obvious that his trousers had just become tighter.

"I've literally just told you I have a meeting." He laughed, making no effort to remove himself from under me, even though he was considerably stronger than me.

"And? We've got time." I began unfastening the buttons on his shirt, revealing his milky skin to my eager eyes.

"My ego hurts at those words, I must admit and as badly as I want you right now, I really have to go." He sighed, flipping us over and kneeling between my legs as he fastened his shirt back up.

I lay with my arms behind my head, staring at the white ceiling of Bill's room.

"When will you be back?" I wondered, looking downwards towards him.

"A couple of hours maybe, I'm not sure." He shrugged, focusing hard on my naked body and running his hands down my thighs.

"I'm gonna head back to my place, I need to get showered and I bet my post is mounting up. My neighbours probably think I'm dodgy or something, I'm literally never there these days." I laughed, leaning up onto my elbows as Bill removed himself from the bed and adjusted his hair, pushing it back into place and shoving his hands in his pockets.

"Wanna do something after my meeting?" He wondered and I nodded.

"Target trip?" I asked excitedly and he rolled his eyes.

"Fine." He groaned, and I clapped my hands.

"You're such a pushover." I giggled, now sitting up on Bill's kingsize bed.

"I'll show you pushover later, but right now I really need to get going." Bill hurriedly kissed my lips and left the bedroom, I could head him jog downstairs.

I waited until I heard the sound of his car pull out of the driveway, the gravel crunching underneath the wheels and that's when I finally decided to get my backside out of bed to brush my teeth in the en suite bathroom.

I shoved my hair up into a disheveled bun and washed my face, removing any reminents of toothpaste from around my mouth.

I quickly sprayed some deodorant just to last me until I got home and could have a good scrub in my bath or in the shower, depending on my mood.

When I was back in Bill's room I mooched around for the first set of underwear I could find, which just happened to be plain black.

I stole another t-shirt from Bill which was white with a random print on the front and rolled the sleeves up so they didn't hang awkwardly at the crease of my elbow, I hated that.

Luckily, I had a few pairs of Joni jeans hanging around here so I merely shoved a light blue pair on and was good to go.

I was pretty impressed with how briskly I'd managed to get myself ready, although I definitely had the advantage seeing as I hadn't applied any make up.

I tidied up Bill's bedroom and made his bed, pulling up the blinds to allow the morning sunlight to flood the room and wake me up further.

I made my way downstairs and to the door, where I just pulled my vans on, grabbed my bag and had a quick scan inside to make sure I had everything including my wallet, keys, iphone and my glasses.

I was pretty content that I'd got everything and that I'd tidied Bill's place up accordingly so left the house after setting the alarm and locking the door behind me.

I'd driven over here yesterday so my white Audi was parked up and waiting for my entry.

I unlocked my car and hopped right in, dumping my bag on the passenger seat.

I belted up and pressed the button to start my car, seeing as it was a keyless start. I got into gear and began the long descent back onto the road, eager to get home.

I'd been back and forth to Bill's place over the last month and it was starting to feel pointless paying rent for such a gorgeous apartment when all I did was stay at his.

I pulled up to my apartment complex, parking in one of my designated spots and locked my car up once I'd grabbed my bag.

I punched in the code and opened the door to the building, entering the foyer where I collected my post.

I mindlessly flipped through the envelopes, scrunching my nose up at the sheer amount of junk mail I'd received.

I climbed up the stairs to my floor, where only my apartment was and shoved the key into the lock, happy to be home.

I kicked my shoes off, dumped the post and my bag on the kitchen counter which happened to be around the corner from my front door and also threw my keys down next to the items.

My apartment was in pristine condition, mostly because I liked to keep it tidy because I was a slight neat freak. It worked out pretty well for me though, because Bill was the same.

I flopped onto my couch, grabbing my MacBook from the glass coffee table and placing it onto of my folded legs, logging onto my account and almost immediately pulling my emails up since I’d neglected them pretty bad.

I flicked through the junk emails, sending them straight to trash folder. Most of them were pretty standard, a few asking of my availability for the rest of the year but one in particular caught my eye.

The name was unfamiliar and the subject merely said ‘an interview with the hottest couple of 2016’ and my heart sank just at reading those words, but it was nothing compared to the actual email itself;

We hope you are able to join us at our Beverly Hill studio to participate in an interview that delves deep into the reality of dating one of the biggest upcoming actors of the year, we would be delighted if both yourself and Bill Skarsgard could attend and reveal all to us and your fans.

My mouth was agape and my heart was beating so aggressively against my chest, why would this reporter lady want to interview Bill and I over being a couple when there was literally no proof or anything out there to suggest that we were more than friends.

We were so careful about doing anything on the set of the last television show we worked together on, that ceased filming a few days ago. I don’t know if Lizzie was working with information that had sprung from rumours, since Bill had gotten big, the public were interested in his personal life, specifically his love life and people were quick to pin me to him.

I hastily sent the email to the junk folder, where it was going to lay dormant with he rest until I went on a deleting spree.

If I didn’t reply to the email, surely it would all go away, right?

I tried to forget about the strange email, hoping to never receive anything like it again.

I pulled up twitter, signing in and having a mindless scroll through my timeline, favouriting the odd tweet and retweeting a few cool pieces that had some relevance to my life.

I also decided to tackle my mentions, which filled up a lot these days after my work was revealing to the world of critique. I mostly got compliments galore and the odd comment that came from a pre pubescent girl who liked to slate my every move, every breath I took.

After moving to LA I grew a back bone and learnt to take shitty comments on the chin, and because of this grew my delightful personality that consisted of sarcasm and standing up for myself.

I yawned as I weaved through the mentions, not particularly interested.

Well, that was until I came across multiple pictures of myself and Bill spamming my mentions. I rolled my eyes, people loved to be nosey.

Although what I did notice was that it was the same three images across multiple tweets, so I decided to enlarge them and what met my eyes were pictures of myself and Bill looking awfully close.

Sickness overwhelmed me, as did sheer panic.

The first image was of us on set, with me on his back and a huge smile on his face as I whispered something into his ear.

The second was of us walking to the restaurant in Beverly Hills in the other day with his arm thrown over my shoulders.

The final image was of us in the restaurant, taken through the window and we were holding hands.

It didn’t look good for us, and I figured it was better to say nothing than to try and magic up a lie that probably made us look shadier.

I let out a growl and slammed the my laptop shut, throwing it to the side of me and covering my face with my hands.

I knew this would happen, but I thought it’d be easier to deny and it was only a matter of time before the tabloids had the pictures printed in every magazine in America.

The last thing we needed getting out was that we both liked each other and the sheer amount of time we spent together, or to have any more picture taken of us without our knowledge.

To say I was worried was an understatement, being so out there now meant that the press would start digging and the last thing I wanted plastered over the internet was my sad excuse of a life.

I didn’t need anyone to know that I’d dropped out of school and that I hadn’t even wanted to attend college. I didn’t want anyone to know that my parents absolutely hated me for doing these things, I was nothing but an embarrassment to them.

I definitely didn’t need Bill to have to endure the comments that would be thrown at him about my age or my background and it was a blessing that he didn’t have any social media or it was certain that this would have blown up even bigger.

I have no idea how long I was sat on my couch wallowing in self pity but the sound of my phone ringing, along with he vibrations snapped me out of my trance.

I yanked it out of my back pocket taking a quick glance at the caller ID, almost shouting out in frustration at the sight of Bill’s name.

I couldn’t bring myself to answer it, so speedily pressed the reject button on the screen.

There was pure silence for a minute before it rang again, flashing up once more with his name. I knew that he’d keep calling if i didn’t pick up, he was the most persistent man I’ve ever met.

“What’s up?” I breathed, running a hand down my face.

“Oh, hey. I’ve just finished with my meeting, are you ready?” He asked, most obviously speaking to me over the speaker in his car.

“Erm, no. I don’t feeling like going out anyway, feel free to head back home.” I excused, the thought of being pictured out together again making my head spin with anxiety.

“Why not? You love going to Target, you were so up for it this morning… is something wrong?” I could almost imagine him frowning in confusion, because it was true, I fucking loved Target.

“I just don’t feel brilliant, Bill. Look, I’ll talk to you later, bye.” I spoke in a rush, hanging up the phone and dropping back into the cushions of my couch.

Tears spilled over and I sobbed quietly, more overwhelmed than anything.

I didn’t move to LA to become the focus of every gossip magazine, I came to escape my old life. This wasn’t what I wanted, I just wanted to work and be happy.

I merely wanted to be left alone, it’s all I’ve ever wanted. Bill was the only person who knew almost everything about me, he was the one person I knew who would catch me if I fell.

A knock at my door pulled me away from the darkness that was just my thoughts and I wiped the tears from under my eyes, sniffling and breathing deeply before hopping up from the couch and plastering on a smile ready for whoever was on the other side of the door.

I twisted the inside lock and pulled it open, cursing at myself for not checking through the spy hole before opening the door.

“What are you doing here? I told you I didn’t feel like going out.” I muttered, leaving Bill at the door and walking into my kitchen.

I heard him close the door behind him and he followed me, and I could feel him watching my every move as I leant on my sink and looked out of the window in front of me.

“You sounded upset on the phone and I’m not an idiot.” He remarked, his presence strong behind me.

I made a face and gritted my teeth.

“You’re an idiot if you forgot how to use your key and let yourself in.” I whispered to myself, watching as the sun moved behind the clouds.

“What’s up with you? You were fine this morning, right until I left. Now I’ve finished my meeting and you have no interest in being around me, and I can’t figure out why.”

I span around harshly, taking him off guard.

“I told you to be careful with what you did in public, the hand holding, the cuddling! Now the press have got photos of us and they’re all over the fucking internet and I have people emailing me asking for interviews, I knew this would happen, I told you that people would start speculating!” I yelled at him, his eyes widening at my sudden tone of voice.

“What pictures? You need to get a grip, Mya! We take one step forward and two back and I specifically remember telling you to not worry and just let people speculate. We’re the only people who need to be involved in our business, it's our own business.” He spoke back, making me roll my eyes.

“It’s not even speculation that’s the problem, Bill. It’s the fact that people have confirmation that there’s something going on between us, and I don’t know what to do about it.” I spoke, my voice cracking and more tears threatening to fall.

Bill let out a prolonged breath and advanced towards me with his arms outstretched, they wrapped around me like a shield.

“There’s nothing you can do, or that you need to do. But I think it's time to face the facts or maybe our feelings in this case." Bill murmured into my hair.

I nodded against him, my face buried into his neck.

Now was the time.

"I'm pretty damn sure that I'm in love with you." I admitted against the skin of his neck.

"Well that's good then, because I'm pretty sure I'm in love with you to." He replied, pushing me back gently and holding my face between his hands.

I looked up at him and once our eyes met I felt every ounce of hurt, upset and anger leave my body.

He rested his forehead against mine and pressed a kiss to my lips, it was gentle, like a feather touching you for a second.

I kissed him back and let my arms go up around his neck, so grateful to be in his arms.

He pulled back for a second and I almost let out a whimper at the loss of contact.

"Be my girlfriend, wife, whatever. I just know that I need you, all of you." Bill revealed and I nodded.

"Can we not say anything to the press? or to anyone, just not yet." I asked, touching his full bottom lip with mine.

"Whatever you want." He whispered, grasping my face harder and crushing his lips on mine.

This was it.

This was official.

Friends with benefits didn't really work out the way I planned but I think it was for the best and now all feelings, secrets and confessions are out there.

I just hope nothing ruins it.

I never thought I’d fall for a pendejo but here I am Suffering and I need some help so if you guys could like offer me any morsels of advice I would really really appreciate it. Under the cut is an unnecessarily long explanation of the situation bc i wanna explain this as clearly as possible and also im really overwhelmed and need to get this out.

So there’s this guy at my job (let’s call him A) that I’ve had a MAJOR thing for for the past several months and a friend of mine (let’s call her W) has been trying to set us up (which he knew) bc she knows I like him (a fact which he did not know until recently – although I have no idea why he didn’t bc if my friend is trying to set us up, cant you like assume she’s doing it bc I like you? But it’s a moot point right now) and she had been reporting back to me that the reason he wasn’t making a move was because we’re friends and coworkers so he didn’t wanna make shit awkward. So as I mentioned in previous posts, on Friday night I went out and got really really drunk and ended up texting A a long ass paragraph that basically boiled down to me saying how much I like him and telling me that he could totally ask me out and not have it be awkward bc I like him so I wouldn’t say no. I also sent this message at 4:45am knowing full well that I would not be receiving a response for at least the next several hours when he woke up.

So I woke up at like 1pm and he still hadn’t responded to the message and I was dreading going into work bc our shifts overlapped for like 6 hours (one of the many reasons sending that text when I did was a horrible idea). His shift started before mine so he was already there when I walked in and of course the first thing my supervisors had me do was cover his register so he could take his first break. So I walk up to him and tell him that it’s time for his break and he turns around and for a split second he lights up when he sees me but it was like literally over immediately. So I take over his register and everything is normal, like he’s joking around with me like he usually does, he’s not acting weird or anything so im like okay this is gonna be fine.

A few hours later, our breaks happen to overlap (which NEVER happens) so im in the break room and he walks in and like my stomach immediately drops. I cant even look at him. He comes over and sits next to me and he has this like grin on his face and I know im in for it. He spends the next few minutes like making fun of the situation (not maliciously or anything, he’s not an asshole. It was more like he was trying to put me at ease by laughing about it but I was so nervous and embarrassed that it just made me feel worse). After a few minutes, I guess he realizes that this tactic is not working and we start talking about how W was trying to set us up and I tell him that everything he’s been saying to her about me was being reported back, which he kind of figured. So we take a minute to kind of get on the same page and then he asked “is there anything you wanna say?” and I responded “is there anything you wanna say?” and he kinda gets quiet for a minute and I look over (I had pretty much been avoiding looking at him this whole time) and he looks like he’s thinking over his next words and then he explains that he’s currently trying to get over this girl who had been messing with his head and that he’s not really in a place to date right now. Obviously I was fucking crushed but I just nodded and told him that I understood and i guess he felt really uncomfortable so he started trying to joke around about it again but my alarm went off to go back so i was thankfully able to leave before I got too emotional in front of him.

Unfortunately, we both still had a long ass time before our shifts were over so we were just like awkwardly avoiding each other and I was standing at my register trying my damndest not to cry. Later on, though, I happened to get my second break as he was in the locker area getting ready to leave (which again NEVER happens) so since everything was fucked anyway I mustered up the courage to ask him if he still would have turned me down if he hadn’t been getting over that girl and he took a minute before responding “I don’t know”. He said that it would depend on what his state of mind was at the time so even though I was frustrated af I accepted his answer and he left. Needless to say, once I got home from work, I spent my Saturday night crying on the phone with W about the situation.

Unfortunately, after all that, we also had to work together all day on Sunday (yesterday). And shit is AWKWARD. I feel really bad about it bc I know that this is exactly what he had been trying to avoid but I cant even bring myself to look at him, much less act normal. So a few hours into the shift, we both happen to have breaks at the same time (seriously, at this point I think it’s some kind of cosmic joke bc prior to this weekend, I can think of maybe 2 or 3 times in the 4 months we’ve been working together that that has happened) and of course bc I don’t know how to keep my fucking mouth shut, I apologize to him for making things awkward and his response is “ok.” in the most detached tone I’ve ever heard him use. So he goes back to what he was doing and I walk away and I ended up going to the bathroom to cry my eyes out because what kind of fucking response to an apology is “K.” I pull myself together and relay this information to W and she’s super supportive and also calls him a dumbass.

So a little while later, I have to take over A’s register again and it’s still awkward and while he’s on his break, I notice him standing at W’s register talking to her (which isn’t abnormal, we all usually hang out at each other’s registers when we’re on breaks) and out of the corner of my eye I notice him look over at me a couple of times but I just keep my eyes on my customers. Eventually he comes back and like awkwardly apologizes for not accepting my apology correctly and said that he didn’t realize he had upset me so I mentioned that he could not have sounded more indifferent if he tried. Then he explains that he didn’t think me being weird was a big deal and that he didn’t think I had anything to apologize for so I felt a lot better. Later, W told me that she took him to task for being a dick to my apology and im so grateful that she did bc that helped us find some tentative solid ground and I was actually able to have a casual interaction with him after that.

But yeah so that was last night and even though I feel a little better and I don’t necessarily want to actively avoid him for the rest of my life, I have no idea how to proceed. I know that he likes me but I don’t know how long it’s gonna take for him to get it together and if he’ll even make a move when he does. I already waited 3 months before asking him out so I feel like i’ve already waited a long time. Plus there’s this other guy (i’ll call him V) who I just met (on Friday night, actually, right before all this blew up) who’s really nice and seems like a good guy and has made it clear that he wants to date me but I don’t know him like I know A. Like I don’t wanna lead V on and get to know him only to have A decide that he’s ready to ask me out bc I know I’ll choose A over V. and I don’t wanna hurt V like that bc he’s a good guy and he doesn’t deserve that. But at the same time, i dont wanna throw away something that might be really good bc what if A doesnt get his shit together and we end up not happening?

So yeah im stuck and I have no idea what to do and I really need some help.

The post above made me laugh for days. It’s true though, they say change is possible and can begin small and be incremental. During this COVID-19 maternity leave I squandered a lot of time. Admittedly for 2 of those months I had a newborn and was sleeping odd hours and had a 2-year-old. Regardless, those can be seen as excuses.

In late March most and most of April I completed the contracted time with a client for my online marketing business. I completed a continuing education credit for my medical interpreting certification. I completed training for a position I did not find suitable after all. I began work on a business plan with a colleague. I ran 26.5 miles, lost 4.2 lbs wrote 1 blog post, and read 2 books (audiobooks). Of course there were daily dinners on the table, packed lunches and bathtime, and bedtime. It was while barely keeping up with all these things that I decided that I needed a more systematic way of achieving my goals.

I was stumbling onto this feeling at the end of the year too, which is when I bought the Habit Roadmap for myself from The Best Self Co. It’s a tracker to manually write and track goals. I started using it but didn’t stick with it. I was annoyed by my lack of success with this tool.

I found a free app, Strides to track my progress. Simply using this app coupled with my obsessive-compulsive personality and the need to check off the bubble each day, I completed 30 days of 3 goals and added another goal 10 days after starting the first 3 goals. These goals weren’t necessarily big, but they are important to me.

The three goals I set for myself were to brush my teeth twice a day – once after breakfast, and once before bed. This seems silly but it’s unbelievable how many nights I’m tired and go to bed without a proper routine. My second goal was to hunker down and focus on my real estate education (one hour per day) so I can take the test and sell real estate as a side hustle or maybe more. The third goal was to consistently take my birth control – because another baby right now would sure derail all the other plans I have – duh. The goal that I added after 10 days of success with the original goals was to pump (breastmilk) daily, so that I could have enough milk stored up for my baby when I return to work in a week and a half.

On April 23rd listened to an episode of The Morning Struggle Podcast about changes to the morning routine that could be helpful. They mentioned rising an hour earlier to have an hour in the morning that was productive. In my case that would be 5 am. It seemed rough but also doable. Just one week prior I had inadvertently been waking up rather early to prepare for an all week online training starting at 7 am since the trainers were on the East Coast – and that went rather well. So I purposefully started waking up at 5 am, pumping then heading out for a short run where I would listen to more podcasts/audiobooks and set my head straight. I’d return by 6 at which time one or both of our boys were awake and my husband was tending to them. At first I felt bad that on a couple of occasions I got up at 5 and the boys got up shortly after which made my husband get up a lot earlier than he would like. But luckily he was a good sport, and within a couple weeks the boys mainly slept again until their regular time (roughly 6 a.m.).

I’m happy to report that yesterday was my 30th day of the first 3 goals. I successfully brushed my teeth every day twice a day. I didn’t think about before and after pictures before, so here’s the best picture I can find of me closest to the start of the 30 days and one of me today. Pretty. Haha. More important, dental health is a gateway to overall health so it’s a big deal if I continue to maintain this habit.

In the 30 days I finished my first of three courses to take the real estate exam! That’s a huge deal. It makes me wish I’d focused sooner. Regardless, now that I know how to do this, I hope to be ready to take the exam for my birthday (mid-August).

This goal was a little challenging because it required undivided attention for an hour a day, so I made it manageable by taking advantage of any time that I had available. I’ve recently learned that babies have awake periods that last 90 minutes, so I was able to more or less predict when my baby would be sleeping. He sleeps for 20-40 minutes, so the minute he would fall asleep I would start the ‘Tomato Timer’ app on my phone – basically just a countdown timer- and set my phone to airplane mode to prevent calls, texts, and notifications from coming in, and I would focus until he woke up or I completed my hour. So, somedays I’d do three stretches of 20 minutes, other days – rarely- I could get the full hour in one sitting!

When I spent more time than the hour, I would accumulate it in 5 minute increments on a post it note which I could ‘cash in’ on a weekend day/night when the family schedule got out of hand. So in this post it below, I have 45 min accrued, and upon the completion of the full hour, I can use it as sort of coupon for a day off from studying. This was very welcomed when it seemed like there was no way I would get to sit at all, or it was too late to begin to focus. An hour can seem like a lot or can seem like a little but I heard something very worthwhile in one of the books I listened to most recently: Everything is Figureoutable by Marie Forleo. While people think they don’t have time, when they take inventory of their time, a lot of it is wasted. We are consuming other peoples creativity instead of ourselves being the creators. We are making other people’s goals come true (by being one more viewer, or consumer) before prioritizing our own goals. If a doctor diagnosed us with a condition cured only by sitting quietly for an hour, we’d surely find the time. So it’s worth finding the time to do the things that move us forward.

The reason I liked this concept is because it ties back to the hour of power that I learned about in Leadership Santa Barbara and that concept helped me develop the 10 Hours to the F*ck It Bucket.

My third goal isn’t super exciting but this pill has to be taken at the same time every day to be most effective, so it worked well to have it be one of the last things I did each night coupled with brushing my teeth before bed so that I could check off both goals before putting my phone away for the night.

Lastly the goal I added 10 days into this process was to pump breast milk. It’s hard when you have a good supply and a breastfeeding baby that feeds on demand to prioritize storage of milk, but eventually, I’m sure he’ll need it, and I will need to do it a lot more often, so I figured I’d start now. Here’s where we are so far in 20 days + the rare times I did pump prior to that.

The last accomplishment of this 30 day window is one that I cannot claim for myself although I did play a role. My husband, my toddler’s caretaker and I have worked on potty training Lucca. We started the same day that I started logging my goals and he’s doing very well. He’s not quite there, but my goal was for him to be potty trained by the time I return to work and I think he’ll make it.

The point of this post is to reflect back on some accomplishments but more importantly to outline the process that can work for me again and for you too. I have questions about the process, like: what happens after 30 days? Do I keep working on the same goals or adding or swapping out new ones? How will this work when I get back to work? My thought is that goals are fluid. Habits are permanent and it’s important to recognize the difference.

Corona Chronicles IV and V

Two in one blogs are an indication that time has started to blur. It takes me a couple of seconds to remember what day it is. I also feel slightly unmotivated to blog because I am not sure anyone reads these and I actually had to ask a friend to read my latest posts to see if these were any good. But I decided that I should do it for me.

Otherwise, a routine and the sense of normalcy has started to kick in. Yesterday I sat at the desk doing work for around 6 hours with a couple of water and bathroom breaks in between. I managed to finish a 2-hour ethics and harassment training for my employers and I know now what the Clery Act is and I would know how to file a Title IX case if it ever came to that. So that’s work done! I still have to do my taxes!!

In the evening yesterday, we ordered Mexican food and started watching Netflix’s latest offering: The Circle. The show has some really interesting characters trying to make it to the end of an experiment where people are eliminated based on interactions between each other through social media. These characters are in isolation so it definitely mimics our current state. This is indeed the time to watch shows about social experiments about isolation. The show Love is Blind is also pretty amazing. Today began with an hour-and-half-long group work out session. We began with the first fitness test in something called insanity workout. The bald instructor keeps saying “boom boom,” so I have decided to affectionately name him uncle Boom Boom. I was almost going to faint at some point in the middle of our fitness/cardio training so I am utterly out of shape. I haven’t swam in 3 weeks now. Then we moved on to pilates with a cheery lady who I haven’t had the chance to name yet. But she can talk non-stop while doing some pretty intense work-outs. I aspire to be like her. We ended with some self care yoga that left us feeling warm and fuzzy. As my roommate says, we still might have 2 years worth of pent up energy that needs to be spent. So the workouts will continue. Grooming in times of Corona My scratchy throat is so much better; my stomach is also fine. I think it might have just been a case of not being conscientious about what I was eating. I am too scared to drink coffee. I have been eating more fruits. Although, a part of me is scared that I will soon run out of papayas and I definitely do not want to go out to get some more. But eating more fruits is good for the skin. Speaking of which, I have not been great at maintaining a skincare routine since my mid twenties. I know how to but I haven’t been regular. A part of the problem is the fact that I don’t have the usual tools: surprisingly, I don’t have a mud face pack, aloe vera gel or rose water (things I always had at hand in my 20s). I ordered a vitamin C serum, some tea tree oil, a face pack and a cleansing brush on amazon to start a routine. There is no question of going swimming or to the gym but I’ll keep my legs smooth and shaven for myself, thank you very much. I plan to tint my hair with some henna that I bought ages ago. I’ll crack an egg in there, add some black tea and some coconut oil. The last time I did this hair routine, my hair was glowing.

Grooming in the time of social isolation is important because it is a reminder that we must take care of ourselves, for ourselves. It doesn’t matter if we can’t show off our silky hair and our painted nails to the world. We do, however, have to live with ourselves and it definitely helps if we look nice.

In the News Younger Adults Make a Big Part of Covid-19 Hospitalizations in the US The idea that young people with healthy immune systems will ride this wave has been in circulation for a while now. But the New York Times has a report that says that young people are indeed being hospitalized and have been grappling with the virus. The number of deaths among young people is lower than for the elderly but that doesn’t discount the fact that young people do indeed show symptoms of this coronavirus infection that lands them in the hospital. Japanese Flu Vaccine Effective Against Coronavirus The Japanese-developed drug, to fight the latest strain of the influenza virus, Favipiravir or Avigan, has proved to be effective against a milder case of Covid-19 according to Chinese medical personnel. They say that the drug doesn’t do much to the more severe symptoms but the fact that it can be effective against milder symptoms is a welcome news. There have been news that Indian doctors in Jaipur made a cocktail of retroviral (HIV) drugs, influenza drugs and swine flu meds that cured an Italian patient of coronavirus. The fact that the antidote to this Covid 19 situation lies in the tweaking of existing antivirals, is highly probable. I know retro viruses and corona viruses are different but given that retroviral drugs have been used to “cure” something as tough as HIV, I wonder if there’s something about using these on corona viruses. What is slightly disconcerting to me is the fact that the international news has no coverage whatsoever of the happenings at Sawai Jai Singh hospital in Jaipur. I wonder if the West is not taking seriously the fact that Indian doctors are very likely to be able to treat patients with Covid-19. This is not coming from a sense of pride over South Asian know-how but from the experience of seeing the superiority of Indian medical personnel more generally from having lived in different countries in the course of my life so far. Do not take Ibuprofen if you have Covid-19 symptoms Apparently, Ibuprofen is not the drug to take to relieve fever or pain symptoms related to Covid-19. The advice in the public sphere came from the French health minister, Olivier Véran who instructed everyone to take acetaminophen instead. NSAIDs apparently made symptoms worse. From the different things I’ve been reading, it seems like this disease has something to do with the inflammation-oxidation-immune systems in our body: which is pretty much every infection but if doctors could figure out the specificty of the mode through which this virus effects these interconnected systems, they could have the answer to what to do. The Sky is Falling: Says a NY Doctor A New York doctor wrote that she might sound alarmist but the case is worrying and as a medical personnel who sees life and death situations everyday, this moment is particularly panic-inducing. She says that she is not confident about the medical profession and the infrastructure to be able to take on the surge capacity of this pandemic. She says that there will in two weeks arise a situation where doctors here in the US will have to make life or death judgements. Her insistence that we must be careful is important. Reflecting On Being A Stay At Home Dad For Two Years: Eight Takeaways

I still remember the day my son was born like it was yesterday. After only about an hour of labor he joined us in this world at 11:58 pm. It was the greatest moment of both our lives.

From that time forward, we pledged to care for him as best we could. In a big way, all the years of saving and investing were to prepare for this moment that we could both be stay at home parents.

As first-time parents, we didn’t know what to expect. So we figured having both of us care for our boy would be the optimal way to go.

Here’s my personal reflection as a stay at home dad for the past two years. I’ve sent this post to his e-mail account for him to read when he’s a little bit older.

Reflecting On Being A Stay At Home Dad For Two Years

1) Losing income is hard, but losing time is harder. Due to being a stay at home dad for two years, I’ve lost out on between $400,000 – $1,000,000 in income. With 18-20 years of experience in finance and online media, getting a $200,000 – $250,000 a year job + restricted stock units is very possible in the SF Bay Area. If I were to go back to banking, my base salary would be $250,000 a year + bonuses equal to 0% – 200% of base salary.

Although losing out on so much income is hard given we now have more expenses taking care of our son, I wouldn’t miss out on the first two years of my son’s life for any amount of money.

You could give me a billion dollars, and if I had to be away from home for 14 hours a day to make that money, I would decline. I’ve spent time with billionaires before, and they are just like you and me, except they fly private everywhere.

Over the past two years, I have witnessed his every milestone: his first smile, his first rollover, his first crawl, his first steps, his first words, and so many more. Each milestone witnessed felt like a blessing. I hope due to all the time both of us have spent with him, we will have an even stronger bond as he grows up.

I know I would have regretted pursuing more money over time with my son. The guilt would have consumed me.

I’ve gotten to know a couple of nannies over the two years and they have told me how they won’t tell the parents about new milestones so that the parents can think they are first time witnesses.

I knew I could always make more money but I could never create more time with our son.

2) Hardest job in the world without a doubt. For all the stay at home parents out there, I salute you! And for all the single parents out there, you have my deepest admiration.

Working 14 hours a day in banking where there’s constant pressure to produce is a walk in the park in comparison to full-time fatherhood.

With full-time fatherhood, you are on 24/7 due to risk of injury or death by the child. The first year of life is the most fragile, which is why you’re always on high alert for choking, suffocation, tumbles, running into a corner, and so forth.

I kept reading stories about Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), which were all so incredibly heartbreaking. For the first year, this paranoia wouldn’t let me sleep uninterrupted for more than 3-4 hours. Back is best and get rid of all the blankets and pillows in the crib please.

Once your child starts to verbalize his or her desires, it’s all about repetition. My son loves garage doors and will say the words “garage door,” “double-wide garage door,” “quadruple wide brown garage door” etc over and over again. He’ll then open and close garage door toys a hundred times in a row. I’ve got to repeat the words and open and close the doors with him. Otherwise, he knows I’m not paying attention.

I’ve also heard whines, screams, and crying 3 – 6X a day for 730+ days in a row. In the beginning, this was quite a shock to the system because we never had any of this since my wife and I started shacking up in 2001. Our boy is a top 1% chatterbox and super determined individual. If he can’t do something or doesn’t get what he wants, he definitely makes himself heard or felt!

Over time, things are getting better as he’s able to verbally communicate his needs and desires. He’s no longer as frustrated because he can tell us he’s tired, thirsty, hungry, sad, and so forth.

And here’s the kicker. My wife did around 70% of the care-taking largely due to nursing needs, and I still felt being a stay at home dad was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. One must develop incredible patience and endurance to survive.

3) Have children and the money will come. Although both my wife and I gave up healthy salaries to raise our boy full-time, we were somehow able to make more money each year after he was born.

When you have a child, your mind and body go into overdrive to try and provide as much care and support as possible. As a result, you gain even more energy to find ways to financially support your family.

In my case, instead of waking up between 5:30 am – 6:15 am to start the day and work on Financial Samurai, I began waking between 3:30 am – 4:30 am to try and get more done before our son would wake up between 7 am – 8 am.

I did not quit because I knew I could not. My family depended on me.

If he has had a particularly poor sleeping night, I would try and take over for a couple hours to allow for my wife to sleep in or decompress. I’d also try to nap as many times as possible during his mid-day nap so that I too could recharge for the afternoon and evening sessions.

After our boy went to bed, usually between 7:30pm-9pm, it was often Netflix, catching up on work stuff I’d postponed during the day, and preparing myself for the next day.

Once he turned 24 months old, our son now has the ability to go from 6:30am – 7:30pm non-stop with no naps several days a week.

Just the other day I took him on a 1 hour 20 minute walk in the morning around our hilly neighborhood. I would have bet anything he’d take a two hour nap after lunch. But he just kept right on going until 8pm!

Overall, we are talking about 4:00am – 10pm days on average with a 45 minute nap in the middle of the day.

As the saying goes, “the days are long and the years are short.”

4) Easy to gain weight and get sick. When all you’re doing is caring for your baby at home, it’s extremely easy to gain weight. I went from around 168 lbs to 173 lbs, even though I was consciously trying not to overeat.

But after about the 18th month, I started losing weight and am back down to about 166 – 169 lbs. The main reason why is because I’ve started to take my boy on almost daily walks. I also went back to playing tennis three days a week.

For men who are looking to have a baby and stay at home, I suggest trying to lose 5 – 10 lbs before your baby is born. That way, you’ll have a 5 – 10 lbs buffer for the inevitability.

Another downer is the increased frequency of getting sick after the first year. Our boy got his first cold at 12 months old. Then he started getting sick about once a quarter as we interacted more with the public.

His sickness spread to us, and we found ourselves frequently battling colds as well. Luckily, neither my wife or have have been sick at the same time.

5) Nannies aren’t paying close enough attention. I’m really sad to report this but after spending over 150 sessions in a public setting (park, museum, playground, etc), the vast majority of nannies (90%+) are on their phones the entire time they are supposed to be watching over your child.

Every time I play chase with my boy, there will inevitably be 2-3 kids who will play along because their nannies are not playing with them. I’ve seen countless falls by 11-16-month-olds just learning to walk because their nannies are not paying attention.

I often wonder whether one of the reasons for slow speech development is because the nanny simple does not spend enough time speaking to their child or describing things to the child as they happen. We parents should be verbally describing everything our children are doing and seeing to help them learn. But with nannies, what I’ve observed is largely silence.

If you are having difficulty deciding whether to return to work or staying home to take care of your child, I recommend you chose to stay home if your can afford to. Nobody will care more about your child than you. It’s not even close.

Many of us are addicted to our mobile phones. The nannies I’ve seen take it to the next level. It’s like they’re getting paid for being on the phone!

If you go the nanny route, I would explicitly tell them to stay off their phones during play time. Whether they do so or not is up to them. But at least you’ve voiced your desires and there’s a greater chance your nanny will follow your instructions.

It is completely sad and a wee bit alarming to have a little one come up to me, a stranger, and ask me to play with them because they are being completely ignored.

6) There was no discrimination. You sometimes hear stories about moms excluding dads from conversations or moms whispering mean words about dads being stay at home parents.

Out of all my outings, I have never once been discriminated against or been made to feel embarrassed or bad for being a stay at home parent. None of my friends have taken jabs at me either.

Maybe it’s because I live in San Francisco, where we’re very accepting of people. Maybe it’s because my wife was also with me during most public settings. Or maybe it’s because I’m a proud dad who is more impervious to the disapproval of others.

Don’t let our insecurities run amuck.

Once I went with a moms group walk around Golden Gate Park and we decided to take a break under a large tree. All the moms started to breastfeed their children, but only one had a shawl. It frankly felt weird to be around the group, so I decided to take a short walk instead.

For all the stay at home dads out there who would rather say you retired early, are a freelancer or entrepreneur, you don’t have to be ashamed that your wife or partner is bringing home the bacon.

Embrace your occupation as a stay at home dad. It is the most important job in the world!

7) Wish I started sooner. I find that men are a little to relaxed about when to have children because we don’t have the same biological deadline as women do. We like to avoid the subject for as long as possible. But this is not fair to women who want to have children. Have a mature discussion early in your relationship.

Physically, I’m still holding up pretty well. But I’m definitely not as limber as I used to be and it takes me longer to recover from a cold or a sports injury. After about age 45, I’m not sure if my body would be able to handle all the necessary bending over and carrying any more.

Having one kid makes me want to have a second. Therefore, it’s good to plan as much as possible. Even if you plan, it might take longer than expected to have a child.

If you know you want to have children, it’s better to have them sooner rather than later. Not only will your body be able to better handle childcare, but your kids might also be able to spend more time with their aging grandparents.

8) You never feel like you’re doing enough. I’m constantly in awe of my wife because of her patience, kindness, and ability to naturally feed our boy when he was a baby.

As a stay at home dad, my son and I have a close connection, but it’s not as close as the connection he has with his mom. As a result, I used to feel a little sad when he cried out for mommy while I was right there playing with him.

What am I, chop liver or something? I’d sometimes think to myself.

Because I’m unable to nurse our boy, I try to make up for my deficiency in other ways: cleaning, driving, grocery shopping, playing, washing dishes, ordering food and so forth. I’d throw myself deep into my work in order to feel the power of being a provider.

Slowly, I’m starting to feel more worthy of being a father. As he gets older I hope all he’ll want to do is play with his old man. It’s just such a weird feeling to never feel like you’re doing enough no matter how hard you try.

Proud To Be A SAHD

After two years of being a stay at home dad, I’m firmly on the side of the rest of the world that provides 6 – 12 months of parental leave after having a baby.

For a woman to return to work within three months seems cruel, especially if a C-section is involved. All a baby wants to do at that age is be with his or her parents.

One doctor said it best, “Nine months to create, nine months to heal.“

Unfortunately, companies aren’t in the business of subsidizing our personal life decisions regarding having children. My hope is that American institutions will soon start to offer some type of token paid parental time off for at least the first child.

At the end of the day, I know my wife and I have tried our very best to raise him so far. Looking back, the two years went by quickly. Looking forward, I’m hoping for many more wonderful experiences.

Alona Beach Okay, picking up where we left off last time, I had been posting but I realized none of them went through so here is a mega post. We've been in Alona Beach for 4 days, here is what has happened Day 1 -Much to our shock and amazement we were woken up at 6am to find a police officer and our cab driver from the previous night at our door, and lo and behold the cab driver had my phone and returned it! He apologized for not having 'reported it'? I have noooo idea what transpired there or why a cop was there but I was just beyond shocked that the phone had made its way back to us. Faith in humanity restored. -So this place is a little confusing. We are staying in the "town" and I say that very loosely of Alona Beach, which is on the teeny tiny island of Panglao. This island is connected via bridge to the slightly larger island of Bohol, whose city is Tagbilaran. We had to get to Tagbilaran to go to the visa place so we got on the back of a motorbike (me, Emily, and the driver on one bike) to take us there. It started completely POURING down rain while we were going and it was a crazy ride to say the least. -We spent the morning in the town of Tagbilaran figuring out our visa extension, and we got it all done in about an hour. It did not take THREE DAYS like the office in Cebu City had told us. After that we went to the mall and then back to Alona Beach where we spent the afternoon on the beach watching the sunset, we had dinner along the beach after that. Day 2 -The next day we spent all day at the beach. It was a lot sunnier than the day before and the water was crystal clear it was amazing, I've never seen water that clear before. We saw lots of giant starfish. We also got badly sunburned, even though we were in the shade most of the time. Oh well. We had dinner at an Italian Asian fusion restaurant which was interesting. Day 3 - On this day we initially were going to rent a motorbike for the day to drive around Bohol but then it quickly became clear that we did not know how to drive one and it wasn't one of those fake it til you make it type things. So instead we hired a tricycle to take us around for the day. Here tricycles are essentially tuk-tuks, a motorbike with a big sidecar attached and a roof and windshield. -We drove first to the Tarsier Sanctuary in the village of Corella. Tarsier are teeny tiny primates that only live on Bohol and they are known for their gigantic eyes and very cute appearance. They kinda look like a bushbaby. There are very few of them left, because unfortunately due to their extremely acute hearing and vision they are horribly sensitive to external stimuli. In the wild they sleep all day and hunt insects at night but tourists now constantly wake them up and make loud noises and flash cameras in their eyes. This causes them enormous distress and it becomes so unbearable for them that they bang their very fragile, thin skulls into walls of the cages people put them in until they die; essentially committing suicide. The sanctuary we visited is the only place which tries to conserve the tarsiers in captivity and keep them from becoming overstimulated but protected from predators. They only have 6 tarsiers there. They live in a fenced off wood without cages where everyone has to be dead silent the entire time and not get too close to them or put stuff if their face. They were very cute animals but gosh I was worried about those poor things. After seeing the tarsiers we rode across Bohol to see the Chocolate Hills. They are called this because in dry season they turn dark brown and are such strange, unnatural looking shapes they look like something out of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but they are completely natural and no one really knows how or why they are there. The road was very steep and twisty and it downpoured again and again. We drove through rice paddies and villages and through a "man made forest" (whatever that means?) which looked exactly like a forest in Oregon. When we got to the hills we climbed to the top of one of the hills to look out and it was so surreal looking; it was like we were on another planet. Hundreds of these comically round mounds sticking straight up out of the ground just went on and on. After we made it back to our hotel we got in about 30 minutes of relaxing before the power went out. We had no idea what had happened until the next day because everything was cut off. No internet or lights or AC or anything. Restaurants had to shut down, the only lights were those from motorbikes. We thought it would just last an hour or so but its lasted over two days now. We found out later through a series of alert texts to our thankfully returned Filipino phone that there had been a 6.7 earthquake about 300 miles northwest of here in Northwest Visayas. (Visayas is the collection of over a thousand islands that make up the center of the country, Alona Beach is in South Central Visayas). Anyway it was a big earthquake and the power supply for all of Visayas was located on the island where it happened and so those are shut down until further notice. They apparently got 1 out of 3 of the power supplies back up and are doing rotational brown/blackouts throughout Visayas for the time being (so we get 2ish hours of power, then it goes off for 4 hours, then back on, etc..). Apparently this happens a lot so most buildings have big scary sounding backup generators that sometimes but not always work. So we've been on and off the grid for the past 2 days, it's been a minor inconvenience but fine. We went and got dinner at the dark beach and everyone was still in a pretty good mood. There was candlelight and some places had generators and gas stoves so they could still serve food. We watched a huge lightening storm over the ocean while we ate. It was a nice evening. Day 4: The power was off all last night and it was like 100 degrees in our room, we couldn't open anything to let in air because mosquitoes. We slept on and off. At like 10am we got some breakfast, slept again because the power was back on for a bit, then went to go get lunch. At lunch a cloud of mosquitoes attacked me (I got like 7 bites in about 5 minutes) and I had an allergic reaction to it. Usually when I get bit by mosquitoes I swell up a bit at the site of the bite and it is fairly swollen for a few hours at least and will go away on its own but I think because I got so many at once it was too much and my whole entire foot started swelling up really big and painful and I couldnt fit in my sandals anymore. So we left our lunch half eaten and limped to a pharmacy and bought a single antihistamine pill (apparently they are sold by the pill here?) for 8 cents. We decided to go to the movies to get some AC and escape from the bugs, so not five minutes after getting the antihistamine we hopped on the back of another motorbike to take us to Tagbilaran to the mall. The wind and sitting on the bike and the pill made my foot calm down. We were going so fast my hat blew off! I had assumed it was gone but before I knew it, someone on another motorbike had found it on the road, somehow knew it was mine, caught up to us, honked and then handed it back to us as they drove by waving and smiling. I was so flabbergasted. People really do go out of their way to be so nice here. When we got to town we got stuck in the most insane traffic jam of hundreds of motorbike, tricycles, the occasional cars and some random pedestrians walking down the middle of the road. Literally the craziest traffic of my life including Mexico City. We realized after the fact that we had been dropped at the wrong mall and had to wander around the crazy streets and traffic for two blocks until we found it. It was like that scene in Mulan when the grandmother is crossing the road. There was just absolute chaos in the streets but for pedestrians the rule is to just close your eyes, put your hand up, and go and people will go around you (its crazy traffic but everyone is going at like 3mph) If you hesitate thats actually worse because it clogs up the flow. We got there and fought through five stories of karaoke singers and zumba dancers and shops to get to the movie theater. We got our ticket and watched the new Spiderman movie. After the experience of getting there, an action movie was pretty relaxing honestly. We got back pretty uneventfully and have been in our powerless hotel ever since. We're leaving Alona Beach first thing in the morning. While it has been beautiful here I do think it is time for us to move on. It certainly has been anything but dull. We are going to the biggest Filipino island (there are over 7,100 islands in the Philippines total) tomorrow, Luzon, where we will be for the next 2.5 weeks. It is where Manila is although we aren't going to stay there. We are going to be in the mountains mostly, first going to stay next to a lake/volcano in Tagaytay and then after that at some rice terraces in Bananue. Yesterday while the power was out I was reading my book about the Philippines and just man, this country has been through A LOT. I won't go through it all but it has not caught a break since the 1500's. They were colonized by the Spanish for 350 years and treated brutally by them (kept in essentially medieval serfdom by the monks and forbidden from education), became independent from the Spanish in a violent revolution only to be immediately taken over by the Americans. While the Americans treated the Filipinos better than the Spanish and installed basic infrastructure and schools; they manipulated the Filipinos to their advantage in just about every way they could think of. They granted them independence in the early 20th century, but continued to occupy it. In WWII they were forced by the Americans into conflict with the Japanese and were absolutely crushed. Manila was practically obliterated and the Philippines was forced to surrender to Japan and the Japanese did like death marches and horrible stuff to them. The city of Manila has been compared to Hiroshima and Warsaw as far as level of destruction caused by WWII. Then after that, a brutal dictatorship until 1989-ish. Now the dictatorship has been overthrown but there is a corrupt government, rampant poverty, limited infrastructure and education, and constant economic and political manipulation by the US and China. Not to mention volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and tsunamis. So through all of that the Filipinos have every right to be angry and bitter; but all of that hardship has just made them kind. They are some of the nicest people I have ever met and time and again they have shown that they will go beyond out of their way to take care of us and of each other and make the best of whatever is going on. Like our minor island wide power outage today. Sure businesses shut down and there was no electricity or internet for a couple days but they made it work and took care of each other and didn't let it get them down. It was just a minor inconvenience and people figured it out. Everyone has been happy and singing karaoke and there to lend a helping hand to their neighbors. Because while the government may not have their back, they will always no matter what have each other's backs. Until tomorrow,

Our 1st Elk!

I am unsure of my abilities to be an office lead at Meridian. I have made 2 dumb mistakes the last few weeks. I keep telling Steve the most he can screw up is have a guy run into a tree while trying to park him. There’s a myriad of ways I can screw things up-BAD! Both of my errors had fixes but 1 of them, only the GM could fix so I had to bother her to come do it so I could close out for the day. For anyone who uses Campground Manager or Master, created by the Canadians, you’ll know that it is NOT a nice program. Something that should be easy to fix (like accidently forgetting to run a report or marking the payment as a credit card instead of a check) is a lot more work than just a couple of simple clicks. If I were a programmer, I’d make a program that was easier to use and I’d be rich. No one seems to like this program but since it’s all they have, everyone uses it. Although I have gotten much better at using it, it still stumps me at times. Like yesterday, I was asked to send an email to a guy who was not picking dog poop up off of his site. She wanted me to send the email using “the program” so it would be recorded on his account. Weill, I couldn’t find a template to use that was a general one, so I had to ask the GM for help. While I waited for her response, I decided to just type of the email and cut and paste a portion of the pet policy so that all I would have to do is cut and paste my “creation” to the email. When she got back to me, I tried this and it wouldn’t let me. (There’s a trick to it though and I found out later how to do it.) So I retyped the whole email. Then she’d asked me to attach a copy of the park rules and Astra wouldn’t let me. Janet later told me, “Oh, I’m sorry, I did ask you to do that. Yah, it won’t let you do that.” So, this program doesn’t play well with Windows. Go figure! Canadians!

We had our RV washed and waxed the other day. A crew from Phoenix came up here to spend a week to service people’s rigs. We decided that ours had probably not been waxed since it rolled off the assembly line and I guess they recommend you do it once a year. We also had the roof sealed which is another thing that they say take VERY good care of. All of that for the “low” price of $380! Ughh! I so didn’t want to do it but knew it needed to be done and these guys come highly recommended and they really did do a great job but ouch! These are the things that you don’t think about when making a budget!

Steve spent a good part of yesterday digging out a better trench hoping to help with the water run-off when the rains comes. I told the photographer she ought to take some pics, you know, park improvement. She told me that she wasn’t sure she could put them in the newsletter because it would show a problem in the park-flooding issues. I would think that’s a given in the mountains during monsoon season! Then he had to come back and help cook dinner. We tried a new recipe, a heart stopper, Bacon Wrapped, Cheese Stuffed Hot Dogs. Sure couldn’t eat those every day and they were a bit of a pain to prepare but they were good. Gotta love Pinterest!

The softball tournament was fun but we had some weather issues. Friday night they lost…barely. Saturday they were supposed to play 2 games, but the rain started about the time we got there and didn’t stop. We waited around for a while hoping it’d stopped. We ran to Jack in the Box…we went to Walmart…Finally around 8 pm, they cancelled the games. So we drove back. Sunday, they won their first game and then lost the 2nd. Then we drove back. It was hot in Payson and we weren’t used to that. I got a little sunburned! We figured we drove 6 hours in 3 days going to the games and back. But it was worth it! You may have seen my Facebook post but we saw our first elk since we got here. People kept saying they’ll be coming off the mountains and you’ll see them everywhere, but we haven’t seen a one and our RV park is called ELK Pines. So we had to drive an hour west to see one and he was right at the edge of town. He was just standing on the side of the road…watching the traffic go by. He was staring at us, staring at him. We were all like “Wow, an elk!” He was like “Wow, traffic!” Thankfully that’s the only live thing we saw as we drove back and forth!

Chris Webber was serving as the color analyst during Game 5 of Warriors-Spurs Tuesday night when he made this comment about Draymond Green:

“This is the impact Draymond Green has,” Webber said, as a highlight was shown of Green driving to the basket and passing to a teammate for a score. “Yes, if he was on other teams and expected to score, he may not be in the starting lineup on some teams.”

Webber went on to say he is one of Golden State’s most valuable players because he keeps their system going, he’s unselfish and he locks down defensively. It didn’t sound like he was trying to criticize Green.

But the idea that Green – a two-time all-star and reigning defensive player of the year – potentially wouldn’t start on other teams was a curious idea.

So, naturally, Green was asked about it. Naturally, he had plenty to say.

“I don’t have a scorer’s mentality, especially for the team that I play on,” Green said. “I think if I did have a scorer’s mentality, it would throw all this off and it wouldn’t work out.

“You know, I think there are times in the game where I probably need to score more, but it’s hard to turn a scorer’s mentality on and off. I’ve had that once before in my life. You don’t just click that on or off. Nonetheless, I do know when I need to be more aggressive and that helps my team out.

“But I don’t care. I’ve done some great things in this league. I’ve been to all-star (games) twice averaging like 11 points, ten points or something like that. Look, you know, I don’t need to score.

“However, I don’t think he can find many GMs are coaches that wouldn’t say I wouldn’t start on their team, and you know, my — I’m fine without scoring the ball. I think I’ve created a new lane for guys in this league to where you don’t have to score 20 points to be an all-star or be a starter in this league and it is what it is.

“That’s fine and my jersey fit well. So I’m doing really pretty good. You know, much love to C-Web, though, from Michigan, State of Michigan, you know, we good.”

By this point, Green was standing up, holding the microphone in his hand. And, as he was, he decided to take a second to recognize someone who wasn’t at Tuesday’s game: Spurs Coach Gregg Popovich, who remains in San Antonio after his wife, Erin, passed away last Wednesday after a lengthy illness.

“One other thing, man, I think when I look at life — you know, seriously, this is dead serious. When I look at life, when somebody pass away, we tend to think we’re there for one day or two days and then we float away and think like their problem go away.

“So I just want to send my love to Pop and his family, again. It was kind of a thing the first day and happened and then it’s like gone. That probably don’t leave for him so much. Love Pop and I send my prayers and best wishes to him and his family.”

Then – as Green remained standing – he was asked about the decidedly odd incident involving a local television reporter stealing the jacket of Ralph Walker, the Warriors’ longtime security guard, after the team’s shootaround in San Antonio last Thursday.

“Yeah, I ain’t saw the video,” Green said. “I think we got great security staff in Ralph, Tony and Jeff. But did they find out what happened and found where the jacket was at?

“Obviously it’s unfortunate. I think, you know, what it boils down to it, it’s a jacket but I think it’s more so the principle. You’re in your own space and you want to return your jacket, and all of us do and so I think it’s more so the principle than the actual thing.

“Like, you know, if I got a dollar sitting here, it’s a dollar, but it’s my dollar. I wouldn’t expect nobody to take it. That’s an unfortunate situation. We got a great front office and great media PR staff that will figure it all out.”

And, with that, yet another eventful Draymond Green press conference had come to an end.

Manu Ginobili still isn’t sure what his future will look like.

The Argentine legend, who will turn 41 in July, said after the Spurs suffered a season-ending 99-91 loss to the Warriors in Game 5 of their first round series the same thing he said last week: that he will take time this summer to contemplate his future before making a decision about whether to return for a 17th NBA season.

“I’ve been contemplating retirement forever,” Ginobili said with a smile. “Nothing changed.

“I’ll let a month or two months go by, and then i’ll see how I feel. I’m not the type of guy that makes decisions on the fly, or when you’re upset or hurt or whatever.

“I usually let it sink in and see how it feels.”

The Spurs will have Ginobili as part of their organization for as long as he’s willing to be part of it. They’d love for him to return again next season, as he’s remained an integral part of their bench – even as one of the oldest players in the league.

“Is there anything that surprises you about Manu?” Spurs interim coach Ettore Messina asked after Ginobili had 10 points, five rebounds and seven assists in nearly 25 minutes Tuesday. “So, I mean, it will be another unbelievable proof of who he is as a man and as a professional player. It’s unbelievable. What can I tell you?

“He was not even doing well today. He had a problem in his foot and he started a little bit — he was not doing well but then he decided he wanted to play. It’s unbelievable, really.”

That feeling is shared by people across the NBA, as few players are as beloved around the league as Ginobili. Just look at this interaction between him and Warriors Coach Steve Kerr – his teammate back in 2002-03, Ginobili’s rookie year – on the court after Game 5.

Kerr then expounded on that feeling in his postgame press conference.

“You know, that’s my guy,” Kerr said with a smile. “We were teammates, 2003, a long time ago. It’s amazing to see him out there continuing to play and play with so much joy and passion.

“So I’m hoping that’s not his last game. I just told him I hope he keeps playing because he’s been just amazing for the league and so fun to watch night-in and night-out.”

He’s not alone.

The Golden State Warriors made it far, far more interesting than they would’ve liked. But, in the end, they managed to survive a late comeback by the San Antonio Spurs to emerge with a 99-91 victory –and, with it, the right to advance to the second round of the NBA playoffs, where they’ll face the New Orleans Pelicans.

The Warriors saw their lead reduced to two points when LaMarcus Aldridge made a pair of free throws inside the final minute to cap a brilliant night with 30 points and 12 rebounds. Kevin Durant, though, came back and buried a jumper from the top of the key to extend Golden State’s lead to four, and ensured the Warriors would emerge from this game – and series – victorious.

Now the focus will shift to how the Warriors match up with the Pelicans – and to whether Manu Ginobili and Kawhi Leonard will be back in San Antonio next season – although for two very different reasons.

Barring a total collapse in the fourth quarter, the Golden State Warriors will be advancing to the second round of the playoffs.

Finally creating some separation from the San Antonio Spurs, the Warriors now lead 79-65 after three, clamping down on their opponents defensively in the same way they did during the opening three games of this series – and failed to in Game 4, which is why tonight’s game is happening in the first place.

San Antonio is shooting just 33 percent from the floor overall, and 6-for-25 from three-point range. If Golden State was having even an average shooting game from three-point range itself – the Warriors are 5-for-21 from three – this game would be over already.

That said, it essentially is.

The Golden State Warriors are playing better than they did in Game 4 — but not well enough to put away the San Antonio Spurs so far in Game 5.

Early in the second half, the Warriors hold a nine-point lead, as they’ve been able to limit San Antonio to 30.6 percent shooting from the floor.

The reason the Warriors haven’t been able to put the game away, though, is because they aren’t making much themselves — including going 4 for 17 from three-point range.

Remarkably, three of those made three-pointers are by the team’s two most suspect main shooters: Draymond Green and Andre Iguodala. So far, both men are a combined 3 for 8 from the field — a percentage Golden State will happily take for the remainder of the playoffs, if it can get it.

With the Miami Heat now officially eliminated from the playoffs, one of the big questions surrounding the Heat heading into the summer is about the status of future Hall of Famer Dwyane Wade.

Wade spent the first 13 years of his career in Miami before spending last season in Chicago and the first half of this year in Cleveland — only to be traded back to South Florida at the deadline instead of getting released.

He settled into a nice role coming off the bench in Miami — one that his game is well-suited to filling for the next few seasons. But will he? Or will he choose to retire instead?

Wade wasn’t saying Tuesday night.

“There will be no breaking news here in Philly,” Wade joked after the loss to the Sixers in Game 5 of their first-round series.

“You can lose with effort. You can lose to a better team. And that’s what they are. We had some moments we would like to have back. Ultimately they had more than us.”

If it was up to Heat Coach Erik Spoelstra, though, Wade won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.

“I’ve coached him now in this role, which I don’t think either one of us ever would have imagined that Dwyane Wade would be coming off the bench,” Spoelstra said. “But he’s handled all of these roles with incredible class and dignity.

“He could play this role forever. I don’t know if he will choose to do that, but it also, again, speaks to his character and his humility, you know, that he’d be willing to take on a role like this. He knew what the deal was. We were already kind of set with our rotation, that was one of the first things he said, ‘I don’t want to disrupt anything. I’ll come off the bench, I’ll play with the second unit, and we’ll make this work. Don’t worry about me.’ And that’s awesome.

“There probably aren’t a lot of Hall of Fame players at his age … who would be willing to do that.”

Now the Heat will wait and see if Wade chooses to do that again next season. He clearly won’t be playing anywhere else. The question is if he’ll be playing at all.

The Golden State Warriors were upset they allowed themselves to have to come back to Oakland and play Game 5 of this series against the San Antonio Spurs by letting Game 4 slip away from them.

They haven’t looked much better at the start of Game 5.

Despite the Spurs struggling from the field early on (going 9 for 27 to start the game), they are managing to hang around thanks to four of those shots they’ve made being from three-point range.

Golden State, on the other hand, is just 2 for 9 from deep, though it does have a 6-0 edge in fast break points and a 16-10 edge in points in the paint.

Once again, Gregg Popovich is missing from the bench for the San Antonio Spurs in a playoff game.

Ettore Messina, Popovich’s lead assistant and one of the most decorated coaches in European basketball history, led the team for a third straight game Tuesday night as the Spurs tried to extend their first-round series with the Golden State Warriors to a sixth game.

The last time Popovich made a public appearance with the team was after practice last Wednesday in San Antonio. It was later that day that the team announced his wife, Erin, had passed away after a lengthy battle with an undisclosed illness.

Popovich didn’t coach either Game 3 or Game 4 in San Antonio, and the team announced Monday he would not be with the Spurs in Oakland for Game 5 Tuesday night.

There has been no word yet on whether Popovich would be available if the Spurs can force Game 6 back in San Antonio Thursday night.

When asked before the game about his recent conversations with Popovich, Messina said, “There are more important things than screens and transition defense.”

Then he paused.

“Even if transition defense is very, very important,” he added.

It was a small moment of levity in a week that has been full of anything but for Popovich and the team he’s been with for more than two decades.

The Philadelphia 76ers owned the second half of each game of their first-round series with the Miami Heat. It’s why they have advanced to the second round for the first time in six years.

Philadelphia emerged with a 104-91 victory over Miami Tuesday night at Wells Fargo Center — a game that was noted across the country for rapper Meek Mill’s first public appearance after being released on bail after five months in prison earlier in the day.

But it also wound up following a familiar refrain for Philadelphia in this series: struggle to pull away from Miami in the first half, then demolish the Heat in the second.

The two teams were tied at 46 at halftime Tuesday, only for the Sixers to pull away after halftime. In the five games in the series, Philadelphia outscored Miami by 78 points in the second half.

In the first half? Miami actually outscored Philadelphia by 24 points.

It was a fitting result, though, as Philadelphia is the far superior team from a talent standpoint. The Heat gamely hung in the series thanks to the grit and experience it had across the roster — not to mention the coaching acumen of Erik Spoelstra, one of the league’s best tacticians.

But the young Sixers responded brilliantly to every challenge thrown their way and look like a potential Finals contender — despite this being the first time the team has made the playoffs since 2012 and the first playoff appearance of the careers of stars Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons, along with valuable role players Dario Saric and Robert Covington.

The Boston Celtics took a 3-2 lead in their best-of-seven series with the Milwaukee Bucks thanks to a 93-87 victory Tuesday night, but the main talking points afterward was a missed shot clock violation that went in favor of the Celtics with 1:16 remaining.

With the Celtics leading 84-79, Horford caught the ball on the wing as the shot clock wound down and hoisted up a three-pointer. It clanged off the rim and landed in the hands of Celtics forward Semi Ojeleye, who corralled the offensive rebound and was fouled.

There was just one problem: The play could not be reviewed. Why? Because going back and checking if the shot clock expired when it hadn’t been called in the first place is not one of the things that triggers a replay review.

So while Boston wound up not scoring on the possession, it caused another 27 seconds to run off the clock — 27 seconds that the Bucks could’ve used as they tried to cut into Boston’s lead in the final minute.

Ironically, it would have been better for Milwaukee if Horford’s shot had gone in. Had it, the Bucks would have gotten the ball back, and his shot would have been looked at later, and the points would have been taken off the board.

But because Horford’s shot missed, there wasn’t a way for it to be looked at. It’s similar to how the league handles goaltending calls. If a goaltending is called, the referees can go and review it to determine whether it was or not. If goaltending is not called, it can’t be looked at it.

The same goes for shot clock violations, as the Bucks found out the hard way Tuesday night.

The Philadelphia 76ers haven’t gotten the boost from Meek Mill’s return and courtside perch that they would’ve hoped.

The Sixers and Miami Heat are tied at 46 at halftime of Game 5, as Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons haven’t gotten much help from their teammates. Embiid (11 points) and Simmons (10) are the only players in double-figures for Philadelphia, who has shot 2 for 12 from three.

Miami, meanwhile, has gone 5 for 18 from three, is shooting just 38 percent overall and has committed seven turnovers that have become 14 Sixers points. By that math, the Heat should feel fortunate this is even a tie game.

The Milwaukee Bucks have managed to hang around as Game 5 has wore on. And, as the game has ebbed into the fourth quarter, the Bucks have pulled back to within 72-68.

The latest surge — the second time in the second half Milwaukee has pulled this close to the Boston Celtics — has been led by Jabari Parker, who has an and-one layup and a dunk in the Bucks’ past two trips. On a night when Milwaukee simply can’t buy a basket, it would be huge for the Bucks to get another scoring option going alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton.

Meek Mill, just hours after being released from prison on bail, rang the bell prior to the start of Game 5 of the Philadelphia 76ers’ playoff series against the Miami Heat.

Mill, a prominent rapper and Philadelphia native, came to the game with minority owner Michael Rubin and comedian Kevin Hart, and spent time with the team in the locker room prior to the game.

He also exchanged a greeting with star center Joel Embiid before tip from his court-side seat — where Mill is wearing an Embiid jersey.

With the Milwaukee Bucks staring at a 16-point deficit late in the first half, it looked like Game 5 of their series with the Boston Celtics could be over by the halftime break.

That, however, was before a late 7-2 Bucks run over the final 90 seconds of the half to get Milwaukee within 11 at the half.

Predictably, the Celtics have shot better at home, but the bigger issue so far in this game is that Milwaukee can’t make anything. The Bucks are shooting 34.9 percent (15 for 43) at halftime, and 3 for 14 (21.4 percent) from three-point range.

Outside of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton, though, Milwaukee is shooting 6 for 28 overall and 2 for 13 from three-point range. Simply put, that has to change in the second half for the Bucks to have a chance to win this game.

The Boston Celtics hit some shots in the first quarter of Game 5. The Milwaukee Bucks hit even less.

In a series that’s been ugly thus far, these first 12 minutes may have sunk to a new low. The Bucks went a dismal 6 for 22 from the field, including 1 for 7 from three. The Celtics went 9 for 21 and 2 for 8. Both teams committed five turnovers.

The Celtics, though, ended it leading 23-15 and have to feel good about where things stand. Role players always play better at home, and with so many role players on both teams, that has to benefit Boston (as it did in Games 1 and 2).

Marcus Smart is the emotional heartbeat of the Boston Celtics, and is precisely the type of player the blue-collar city is known to love.

Thus, it should come as a surprise to no one that Smart received a standing ovation when he checked in at the 4:08 mark of Game 5 of Boston’s first-round series with the Milwaukee Bucks.

That said: How much of an impact will Smart actually make in this series?

Yes, he has strengths that can help a team in the playoffs — particularly his ability to switch defensively because of his size and strength as a guard, and he can operate the pick-and-roll with some proficiency.

But Smart’s strengths are not in scoring — which is the thing Boston has struggled with so far in this series. If his return means less minutes for the combination of Aron Baynes and Semi Ojeleye, that’s one thing. But if it means less minutes for Terry Rozier, Jaylen Brown or Jayson Tatum? That might not work out so well for a Boston team that needs every potential scoring avenue it can find.

Rapper Meek Mill has arrived at Wells Fargo Center and was seen entering the Sixers locker room pregame.

Meek Mill was released from prison earlier Tuesday on bail after serving five months. Sixers minority owner Michael Rubin picked up the rapper in Chester, Pa., and it appears he was flown to Philadelphia in a helicopter.

Trailing 2-0 in a series last season against the Chicago Bulls, Boston Celtics Coach Brad Stevens put Gerald Green into the starting lineup for Game 3. That (plus Rajon Rondo’s injured thumb) wound up being the catalyst for Boston winning the next four games of the series, and eventually reaching the Eastern Conference finals.

This year, with Boston tied 2-2 after dropping a pair of games in Milwaukee, Stevens decided to shake things up once again.

Rookie forward Semi Ojeleye came into the starting lineup, replacing Australian center Aron Baynes, with the hope of providing more spacing and improved switching on defensive for the Celtics. And, in the opening minutes, Ojeleye managed to knock down a three-pointer from the corner (though he missed another).

In a series of tweets Tuesday afternoon, rapper Meek Mill confirmed he had been released on bail from a state correction institution in Chester, Pa., five months after he’d been incarcerated for a probation violation.

Mill, whose given name is Robert Williams, has received a visit earlier Tuesday from comedian Kevin Hart and Sixers minority owner Michael Rubin. A short time later, Rubin posted on Instagram a picture of himself, Mill and Hart at a Sixers game, and said he was going back to the prison to pick the rapper up.

Mill’s case has been championed by players across the NBA — including Sixers rookies Ben Simmons and Markelle Fultz, who reportedly went to visit him in prison, as well.

Before each home game, Philadelphia has someone different serve as the team’s ceremonial bell-ringer, hitting a replica of the Liberty Bell just before tip-off to wind up the crowd inside Wells Fargo Center.

The bell-ringer for Game 1 was Joel Embiid, who was injured at the time. For Game 2, it was Hart.

If he’s able to get there in time, could Mill do it for Game 5? According to the New York Times, yes.
