Black Clover timeline Headcanon

(but gives numbers for happy brain)

Okay! Gonna put my timeline math into a post! Feel free to alter!

So Under the presumption that the average Wizard King term is 10 years, and a Wizard King can have multiple terms. And there has been 28 in the past 500 years.

Lemiel was the first and he was one for a day

Princia was the 11th (died at 22)

Jester the 16th (died at 23)

Edward the 20th (died at 66)

Conrad the 27th (stripped of power at 35)

Julius the 28th (stops being Wizard king at 44 presumably, but it’s hard to say)

Black Bulls and Golden Dawn are created when Yami is 22 and William is 20, to which Julius is Wizard King (age 37) at this point. 6 years ago. And we know he became WK 10 years ago from Spade Arc (was he 33 when he became WK?) Damn. Wait… Rill is the youngest ever captain at 19. And Rill even states he isn’t anymore when Yuno becomes a Grand Master.

So who was Captain prior to Rill?

And that means Julius had to become a Captain at at least 20 years old.

Yami meets Julius as a captain at 15 (14 years ago)

The fight with Conrad had Nozell, Yami, Kaiser, Merelona, Feugolean

Mathamatically Yami should be 19 (Charlotte just joined the magic Knights by this point)

Probably right after Morgen’s death as he isn’t in the fight

Say Julius is 33 here, Julius could have been 20 when meeting Yami which fits in the timeline better.

So let’s say vaguely 10 years is a single term, if each Wizard King stuck to that then there would have been 50 Wizard Kings instead, but clearly that isn’t the case. Unless the average Wizard King goes at it for about 2 or more terms. A WK isn’t limited to a set amount of terms, but a decade is 1 term. If the average is 2 terms per WK, that is 25 Wizard Kings, for a perfect 20 years divided, but we know Lumeire, Princia, Jester, Edward, and Conrad all had short terms. All of these are assumptions, so head canon territory

Edward (harder to say, he could have become the WK at 46 and had a twenty year term, but I don’t think he was. He was also a priest, which takes 5 years, and you have to be 25 years old. So say he became a priest at 30 years old, orphanage he cared for was burned down at 40 years of age, he became a WK, average time to rise for someone talented enough to be the WK is probably around 3-5 years to be a Captain, and then after that who knows. So became WK at maybe 46-47. Died twenty years later at 66, for his beliefs, but lived a fairly long term as WK (4th century) (414 Ewk)

It seems he was WK for a good while, probably at least 5 years, so giving him a 8 year term

Julius (11 years) (511 EWK on Judgment day) ----- SO! My guess is that Grimoire ceremonies are in spring as we know, probably the equinox, because celestial event and all that. So makes sense that when we know that magic knight exam is 6 months later on the Autumn equinox! Which September 22nd! Which is 12 days until Asta turns 16!

So Day 2: Mission with Magna and Noelle about boar hunting which spirals out of control

Day 3: Dungeon with Luck and Noelle

….

Day: 4,5,6,7,8,9, and 10 Asta was asleep for a whole 7 days, and then the magic knight meeting and the attack on Capital….

Day 11: Asta goes out on the mixer, saying he is 15 (and it fits because it technically is October 3rd here).

Day 12: Asta’s birthday, hanging out with Rebecca, her siblings, and also Marie. (Ironic since it's supposed to be her birthday, but Asta literally calls himself 15 the day before)... So Asta is 16 from here on, and we know that he is part of the Black Bulls for a whole year before training begins! So training begins right before he turns 17. So a timeline!

A Description of Sha Wujing's Weapon

Sha Wujing's weapon is often portrayed as a bladed Monk's Spade in modern media. However, he wields a magic wooden staff in Journey to the West (Xiyouji, 西遊記, 1592 CE). A poem describing the look, history, and powers of the weapon appears in chapter 22.

Anthony C. Yu's (Wu & Yu, 2012) original translation opens with:

For years my staff has enjoyed great fame, At first an evergreen tree in the moon. Wu Gang cut down from it one huge limb: Lu Ban then made it, using all his skills. Within the hub's one solid piece of gold: Outside it's wrapped by countless pearly threads. It's called the treasure staff for crushing fiends [...] (vol. 1, p. 428) 寶杖原來名譽大，本是月裡梭羅派。吳剛伐下一枝來，魯班製造工夫蓋。裡邊一條金趁心，外邊萬道珠絲玠。名稱寶杖善降妖 …

But I recently noticed that the translation needed some improvements. Below is my version.

For years my treasure staff has enjoyed great fame. Originally a tree of the sala variety in the moon, [A] Wu Gang cut down from it one limb. [B] Lu Ban then made it, using all his skills. Within the hub is "as-you-will" metal, [C] Outside it’s wrapped by countless pearly threads. It’s called the Treasure Staff Perfect for Subduing Monsters [D] […] (based on Wu & Yu, 2012, vol. 1, p. 428)

Here are the reasons why I made such changes:

A) The Chinese identifies the tree as suoluo pai (梭羅派), which literally means a “(family) branch of the sala tree.” I chose “type of” to avoid confusion with “a variety of” And while the sala is technically a kind of evergreen in wet environments, it has deciduous-looking leaves. I chose to use the actual name of the tree to avoid confusion with pine evergreens. Yu (Wu & Yu, 2012) incorrectly identifies the suoluo tree as “Cunninghamia [l]anceolata,” a type of Chinese pine evergreen (vol. 4, p. 391 n. 7).

B) The Chinese mentions nothing about the size of the branch.

C) The Chinese states that the inside is jin chenxin (金趁心), or “satisfactory metal/gold.” This is likely referring to the Chinese idiom chenxin ruyi (趁心如意), or “as one desires.” This important as the novel reveals that Sha’s weapon is capable of growing or shrinking on command just like Monkey’s cudgel, the “As-You-Will Gold-Banded Staff” (Wu & Yu, 2012, vol. 1, p. 429). Thank you to Irwen Wong of the Journey to the West Library blog for reminding me of this fact.

D) Yu (Wu & Yu, 2012) skipped over shan (善), or “good at, apt, perfect,” in his translation (vol. 1, p. 428).

Our general activity rules regarding checks are as follows:

Post-season 2018 Top 50 prospects

With Gleyber Torres, Miguel Andujar, and others graduating this year, the Yankees farm rankings don’t look quite as strong as they have in the recent past. That said, there is a ton of talent, especially on the pitching side, just waiting for the Yankees to tap in to. In Triple-A alone, the Yankees have 8-9 choices for the rotation, all of whom are legitimate major league prospects. These 8-9 pitchers are all in the top 50. I can’t recall a time where that has ever happened before with minor league starting pitching prospects.

It’s not that they don’t have hitting prospects, but there are not as many major league close position player superstar prospects as there have been in the recent past. The good news is that the major league team doesn’t need them. They need pitching. The minor leagues have that in spades. On the other hand, there is a glut of position player talent in the lower minors that will have a chance to develop into top prospects in the coming years. Time will tell.

Below is my list of the top 50 prospects in the system at this moment. There are several who didn’t make the cut but could easily be on the list. Others are not on the list because they had too much major league service time this year, or in years past. Feel free to weigh in (respectfully) with your opinion on who should be on the list, and how your rankings differ from mine!

1. Justus Sheffield – LHP, 6-foot-0, 200-pounds, 22-years-old – Few players on the farm had as good of a season pitching as Justus Sheffield. He’s got a 2.56 ERA and 119 K : 50 BB in 112.2 innings pitched. He has a low-mid 90’s fastball, slider, and changeup. Sheffield is on the brink of a call-up to the major leagues as a reliever and will likely compete for a spot in the rotation next season.

2. Estevan Florial – CF, 6-fooot-1, 185-pounds, 20-years-old – It was a year marred by injuries and Florial struggled early, but he is just 20-years-old and holding his own at the High-A level. He is a 5-tool-player who plays a premium position in centerfield and can hit the cover off the ball. He has a .278/.377/.415/.792 line with six homeruns, 18 doubles, and three triples. He stole 14 bases on the year. I have a feeling he will have a big year in 2019 if he is able to stay healthy.

3. Jonathan Loaisiga – RHP, 5-foot-11, 165-pounds, 23-years-old – Talk about a guy who came out of nowhere to have a huge season and become a top prospect. Loaisiga had an unbelievable season. He went from not playing in the long season leagues last year to pitching in the Bronx before succumbing to an injury. Luckily it was nothing serious and he is back to pitching again. He’s thrown 74 innings between the majors and the minors this season. He has a 2.89 ERA in the minors with 67 K : 8 BB in 56 innings in the minors this year. In the majors, he had 21 K : 8 BB with a 3.00 ERA in 18 innings. He’s made an amazing splash this year and he too could compete for a job with the Yankees out of Spring Training in 2019.

4. Albert Abreu – RHP, 6-foot-2, 175-pounds, 22-years-old – Scouts seem to universally love Abreu’s stuff. Unfortunately he hasn’t been able to stay healthy for a full season since arriving with the Yankees. He still had a decent season with a 4.16 ERA and 65 K : 29 BB in 62.2 innings in High-A. The big thing with Abreu is that he must stay healthy going forward. If he can, the Yankees view him as potentially another Severino.

5. Domingo Acevedo – RHP, 6-foot-7, 250-pounds, 24-years-old – This is a pitching heavy system and there’s more coming. Acevedo is probably ready now to compete as a reliever in the MLB, and if he continues to develop as a starter, he has #1 or #2 starter potential. Only time will tell if he can put it all together and hit his ceiling. He has a fastball that sits 95-97 mph and touches 100 mph, and a plus changeup with a now above average slider and still improving. He was injured a lot this season but when he did pitch he was effective. The strikeouts are down, but overall he had a 2.99 ERA with 55 K : 21 BB in 69.1 innings. It wasn’t a bad season for him, but in 2019 he will look to stay healthy, pitch 150 innings, and get back to his strikeout ways.

6. Matt Sauer – RHP, 6-foot-4, 195-pounds, 19-years-old – Sauer had a solid season with the exception of 3-4 starts towards the end of the season. Given that this was his first professional season and first time completing extended Spring Training, I would guess that he started to tire out towards the end of the season. Next year he should come back bigger, stronger, and with more endurance. He finished with 61.2 innings, 44 K : 16 BB, and a 4.23 ERA. The biggest knock on him has always been his control, and he seems to have corralled that problem this year. The book on him is that he is already sitting 92-95 mph and has been clocked at 97. He also has a plus slider and is still developing a curve and a changeup.

7. Chance Adams – RHP, 24-years-old, 6-foot-1, 220-pounds – In 2018, Adams had his worst year as a pro. He still got an opportunity to pitch in the majors, which says a lot about how highly the Yankees think of him. There was something missing from his repertoire this year, especially early in the year. The Yankees are having him finish out the year as a reliever. It will be fun to see how he does in his September call-up. He finished the year with a 4.91 ERA and 112 K : 58 BB in 110 innings. Hopefully he learned a lot this year and will be ready to go in 2019. He’s a guy who could blossom next year with a mid-90’s fastball that reaches the upper 90’s, and multiple plus secondary pitches.

8. Clarke Schmidt – RHP, 6-foot-1, 200-pounds, 22-years-old – This season was basically a “stay healthy and get some professional innings under my belt” season for Clarke Schmidt. That said, he has had a nice, albeit abbreviated, season. He has a 3.09 ERA and 30 K : 6 BB in 23.1 innings. Opponents hit just .195 against him so far. Word on the street is his velocity is back to 92-95 mph and topping out at 97, with his changeup already showing great improvement, and his slider getting back to where it was (although not quite yet). Next year will be Schmidt’s true coming out party, hopefully. He was sent to Tampa for an undisclosed reason on August 5th, which ended his season. I will update you on what this is all about as soon as I know.

9. Anthony Seigler – C, 6-foot-0, 200-pounds, SH, 19-years-old – The Yankees first round pick this year, Seigler had a solid first year. He hit well in the GCL, with a .333/.429/.472/.901 line and one homerun with two doubles. He slowed down when promoted to Pulaski and ended the season with a .266/.479/.342/.721 line in 24 games. He went down with a concussion and that was the end of his season. Seigler has long term power potential and hitting ability and appears like he will definitely stick at catcher. Give him a couple of years in this system and he could turn into a real gem. For now he’ll stick in the top 10 and we will see where he goes from here.

10. Everson Perreira – CF, 6-foot-0, 191-pounds, RHB, 17-years-old – Perreira had a solid season considering he is 17, playing in Pulaski, and in his first season in the United States. He finished with a .263/322/.389/.712 line with three homers, eight doubles, and two triples this year. He’s a five tool player who has a ton of potential to become a top prospect.

11. Antonio Cabello – CF, 5-foot-10, 160-pounds, RHB, 17-years-old – Cabello was having a monster debut season before he went down with a season ending injury. He finished the year with a .321/.426/.555/.981 line in the GCL with five homeruns, nine doubles, and four triples. He also stole five bases. He’s another guy with five tools. Hopefully the injury he sustained is nothing serious. I’ve heard Mike Trout comparisons on several occasions, but that’s not a fair comparison for anyone, let alone a 17-year-old in the GCL.

12. Deivi Garcia – RHP, 5-foot-10, 163-pounds, 19-years-old – He has had one of the best seasons from a 19-year-old pitcher I have seen since I started following the Yankees’ minor leagues. He has a 2.74 ERA and 98 K : 18 BB in 69 innings between Low-A and High-A. He also has a .200 average against. Those are video game stats and he has a video game curveball. The curveball has a spin rate of 3000 RPM, and his fastball sits 92-95 with an also elite spin rate. He has pinpoint control and goes after hitters. He has drawn comparisons to Pedro Martinez, although again that is not fair to say about any prospect. Yet another potentially elite pitching prospect in this system.

13. Thairo Estrada – SS/3B/2B/OF, 5-foot-10, 185-pounds, RHB, 22-years-old – It was a lost season for Thairo, and who could blame the guy. He got shot in the thigh just a month or so before the season started. It took him a while to heal from that, and even then he suffered from more injuries which were likely related to the gun shot wound. It wouldn’t even be fair to consider his stats this year, so I won’t post them here. There’s no way to know if he will ever be the same after this unfortunate event in his life, but I have hope for Thairo. He has done nothing but perform all the way up the ladder in the minors. He’s close to major league ready, and might get a shot next year if he’s back to normal. At his best, he’s a high average hitter with a ton of pop and a versatile glove. That would have been useful this year.

14. Dermis Garcia – 3B, 6-foot-3, 200-pounds, RHB, 20-years-old – There are few players in the minors with as much power as Dermis Garcia. He repeated Low-A this year and has been slightly disappointing. He had a .239/.316/.435/.750 line with 13 homeruns, 17 doubles, and two triples on the season. He has light tower power and there’s no telling when the light bulb could turn on, making him a superstar prospect. It hasn’t happened yet though and he has one more year before the Yankees will have to protect him from the rule five draft. Time is running out, but his potential is still tremendous. By the way, the Yankees are giving Garcia a chance to be a two-way player. Apparently they were inspired by what Ohtani was able to do this year, and they feel he could potentially contribute as a pitcher as well. He has a cannon and apparently hits upper 90’s off the mound with no training.

15. Michael King – RHP, 6-foot-3, 210-pounds, 23-years-old – Arguably the most dominant pitcher in the system this year, King hugely increased his stock this year. Last year he had pretty ordinary stuff in Low-A, with a 92-94 mph fastball, a decent slider, and rather ordinary tertiary pitches. Something, however, has changed with him. The Yankees’ analytic department liked him for his ground ball rate, and that has continued. Something, however, changed with his stuff this year too. Brian Cashman recently said he was highly sough after at the trade deadline this year. A few teams were looking to put him in their rotation now! He was also quoted as saying that “what he has become is not what was traded.” He went on to say that he has jumped a category or two based on the improved stuff. King is now at the point where he could contribute next year.

16. Roansy Contreras – RHP, 6-foot-0, 175-pounds, 18-years-old – Now touching 96-97 mph with his fastball, Contreras took a huge jump this year. He has a great curveball and a work-in-progress changeup and has had a successful second professional season. Between Staten Island and Low-A, he threw 57.1 innings, had 54 K : 18 BB, and had a 2.67 ERA. The Yankees are high on this kid, and he is one of many high ceiling kids they have in the lower minors right now to supplement their already tremendous depth at pitcher.

17. Brian Keller – RHP, 6-foot-3, 210-pounds, 24-years-old – A sleeper coming into this year, Keller started out of the gate slow and looked as though he might have a disappointing season. That all changed about midway through the season. He finished the season with a 3.74 ERA and 114 K : 37 BB in 125 innings. This was not nearly as successful of a season as 2017, but he did finish the season strong. After the All-Star break, Keller had a 3.02 ERA and 53 K : 16 BB in 50.2 innings. Considering he is now up to 93-95 mph with the fastball and several above average secondary pitches he can locate, he is a legit prospect. He now has success up to Double-A and is another part of the unbelievable depth at the upper levels going into 2019.

18. Garrett Whitlock – RHP, 6-foot-5, 190-pounds, 22-years-old – Whitlock catapulted himself from a guy who was not in the top 50 at the beginning of the year to 18th now. He was listed as one of my breakout candidates at the beginning of the year, and boy did he prove me right. He ended up with a 1.86 ERA and 122 K : 41 BB in 120.2 innings on the season. He was placed on the 7-day DL the on August 26th, which is probably because he reached his innings limit. Whitlock possesses a 92-95 mph fastball with plus control and plus movement. His slider improved in a short period of time and his changeup is already a solid pitch. He reached as high as Double-A this year and is poised to add to the upper minors depth in 2019. He will probably start in Double-A.

19. Nick Nelson – RHP, 6-foot-1, 195-pounds, 22-years-old – Despite having the same lousy walk rate in 2018 as he did in 2017, Nelson had a huge breakout this year. He threw 121 innings and struck out 144 while walking 61 and finished with a 3.42 ERA. Nelson finished the year in Double-A and is also part of the upper minors crew of pitchers. He has a mid-90’s fastball, plus curveball, and a still developing but greatly improved changeup. He has a major league pedigree.

20. Nick Green – RHP, 6-foot-1, 175-pounds, 23-years-old – Green also had a breakout year in 2018, and he too finished the year in Double-A. Overall he threw 132.2 innings, had 102 K : 64 BB, and finished with a 3.32 ERA between High-A and Trenton. Green has a 92-95 mph fastball, plus curveball, and improving changeup as well. This staff in Triple-A and Double-A is going to be stacked next year.

21. Luis Gil – RHP, 6-foot-3, 176-pounds, 20-years-old – The Yankees got Gil for Jake Cave, who they would have lost if they didn’t trade, and it’s looking like they got a good one here. This year between Pulaski and Staten Island, he has a 2.14 ERA and 61 K : 31 BB in 42 innings pitched. The walks are a definite issue, but the overall stats are exciting. He has a 94-97 mph fastball that hits 99 mph. He also has a power curveball which can be plus at times. He’s starting to gain the feel for a changeup but has a long way to go with that. With his arm Gil could become a bigtime prospect next year if he continues to improve.

22. Josh Breaux – C, 6-foot-1, 220-pounds, RHB, 21-years-old – Breaux hit the ball well in his minor league debut, finishing with a .269/.289/.352/.641 line. He is expected to be a power hitting catcher who can also field his position adequately. He was a solid 2nd round pick for them. He has a great set of tools for a catcher, and now the Yankees have an opportunity to develop yet another slugging catcher.

23. Freicer Perez – RHP, 6-foot-8, 240-pounds, 22-years-old – His season only lasted six disappointing starts, at which point he had to go under the knife for bone spurs in his throwing shoulder. It is safe to say the spurs were affecting his pitching, as he was not the same guy to start 2018 as he was in 2017. He had a tremendous year in 2017 and he had the stuff to match it. When healthy, he sits in the upper 90’s topping out at 100. He also has two above average secondary pitches and good control. A healthy season in 2019 is all we can ask for from him at this point.

24. Erik Swanson – RHP, 6-foot-3, 235-pounds, 25-years-old – Swanson had a monstrous year in 2018, truly his breakout season. He threw 121.2 innings and struck out 139 while walking 29. He finished with a 2.66 ERA over two levels. He had one of the best seasons on the farm, and he has some solid stuff to back up those stats too. He has a mid-90’s fastball that tops out at 98 mph, and a changeup and slider to go with it.

25. Trevor Stephan – RHP, 6-foot-5, 225-pounds, 22-years-old – He held up his end of the bargain this year as a breakout player until his promotion to Trenton. That said, regardless of performance it is impressive that he is all the way up in Trenton this year. He also appeared to hit a wall at some point in the season when he eclipsed his career high for innings. He finished with a 3.69 ERA and 140 K : 38 BB in 124.1 innings between High-A and Double-A. Opponents batted .224 against him. Not bad for his first professional season. He’s another to add to the list of high end arms in the upper minors.

26. Luis Medina – RHP, 6-foot-1, 175-pounds, 19-years-old – You can have the best stuff in the world, but if you can’t locate it you will never succeed in baseball. That is where Luis Medina stands right now. His repertoire is good enough to be a top 5 prospect in the system. Right now he does not know where it’s going, unfortunately. He finished the season with 46 walks in 36 innings. That is horrific. He also had a 6.25 ERA, but of course he struck out 47 batters, showing his potential. He’s an upper 90’s, even triple-digit fastball guy. He has tremendous movement on his secondary pitches. If he can harness it, he’s a top prospect in all of baseball. If not he’s just a spectacular flop.

27. Dom Thompson-Williams – CF, 6-foot-0, 190-pounds, LHB, 23-years-old – DTW came out of nowhere to have a monster season in 2018. For a guy who has always had 5-tool potential, he has done a great job of flying under the radar so far in his career. This year that all changed. He has a .296/.358/.542/.900 line with 22 HR, 17 doubles, four triples, and 17 SB this season in 97 games. Extrapolating that to 150 games, it’s not hard to imagine a guy who has 30/30 potential. DTW has 5-tools and can play centerfield. If he can hit like that and play a solid centerfield, he will have all-star potential.

28. Luis Gil – RHP, 6-foot-3, 176-pounds, 20-years-old – Gil has a fastball that ranges from 95-100 mph and improving secondary pitches. The Yankees moved him up to Pulaski and then to Staten Island at the end of the year. He finished the season with a 1.95 ERA and 68 K : 31 BB in 46 innings. This guy is a beast in waiting, and I expect him to move fast in 2019.

29. Nolan Martinez – RHP, 6-foot-2, 165-pounds, 20-years-old – Martinez had a nice season in 2018. He only threw 56.1 innings, but he had a 2.72 ERA and had 39 K : 22 BB. He has a low 90’s fastball with two plus secondary pitches already. Given his size, he is likely to increase his velocity over time as his arm strength increases and as he accumulates more innings. The future is bright for Martinez, and he’s another young arm that could become a top prospect within the next couple of years.

30. Harold Cortijo – RHP, 6-foot-2, 180-pounds, 19-years-old – Cortijo is a second-year player who made his debut in Staten Island this year and was immensely impressive. He had a 2.63 ERA and 60 K : 12 BB in 51.1 innings this year. He’s sitting 93-95 mph this year and popping some 97’s. He has a dominant changeup to go along with it and a nice breaking ball. To get that in the 14th round was a great find for the Yankees. He’s a rising star and next year he should start in Charleston, where he could be a force and become a top prospect.

31. Hoy Jun Park – SS/2B, 6-foot-1, 175-pounds, LHB, 22-years-old – Another year has gone by, and it was another year where Park held his own but didn’t do much to increase his stock. We’re still waiting on that true breakout year, but as we’ve seen with guys like Jake Cave, Kyle Higashioka, and Abiatal Avelino, that breakout can come at any time. He has the tools, including speed, some pop, and a great eye. He had a .258/.387/.349/.736 line with six homeruns, nine doubles, and two triples while stealing 18 bases in 2018. He only struck out 69 times in 103 games, which shows he’s got the ability to make contact. He has that hand-eye coordination to put the ball in play, now he’s got to find the right swing that will generate more line drives and get the ball in the air more often. If he does that next year he could break out.

32. Yoendrys Gomez – RHP, 6-foot-3, 175-pounds, 18-years-old – I had never heard of Gomez until late this year, but he’s another high-end arm that has been placed in the system. He has a 93-95 mph fastball with good movement, spins the curveball well, and has a changeup with good fade. He’s a big kid and is just 18-years-old. Who knows how hard he will throw by the time he is done developing. He already appears to be quite advanced. Gomez finished the season with 47.2 innings, 50 K : 22 BB, and a 2.08 ERA between the DSL and the GCL this year. It wouldn’t be that much of a stretch if he saw some time in Charleston next year, although I think Staten Island or Pulaski is a better bet for him for now.

33. Rony Garcia – RHP, 6-foot-3, 200-pounds, 20-years-old – Garcia had a disappointing season in 2018, but it’s easy to forget that he is just 20. He finished off with a 4.31 ERA and 107 K : 28 BB in 119 innings between Low-A and High-A this year. His stuff took a while to come along this year, and when it finally did he looked to tire out towards the end. He did have a record high in innings though, and that will go a long way towards building his arm strength and endurance for the future. Towards the middle of the season, Garcia was back up to his 92-95 mph fastball with some 96 readings in there. He still has a plus curveball, but the changeup didn’t come along like he had hoped this year. He’s one adjustment away from being back to his old self, and he’s still young enough that he has plenty of time to make that happen.

34. Anthony Garcia – OF, 6-foot-5, 204-pounds, SH, 17-years-old – Garcia came stateside as a 17-year-old this year and he mashed. He didn’t hit for a high average, but that will be tough to do given his frame. What he did do, however, his hit .244/.320/.513/.833 with 10 HR, six doubles, and three triples in the GCL in 44 games. He clearly has a ton of power already, and with time he could become even more of a power threat given his frame. He is athletic and has the arm to stick in RF.

35. Kyle Holder – SS, 6-foot-1, 185-pounds, LHB, 24-years-old – Holder is still one of the best defenders in the minors at shortstop, which makes him somewhat valuable. He seemed to turn the corner last year with the bat, but in 2018 he had a lot of trouble staying on the field and his numbers weren’t particularly good when he was healthy. He finished the year with a .256/.319/.337/.657 line with two homeruns, six doubles, and a triple. It was a bit of a lost year for Holder, so he’ll have to reclaim his prospect value in 2019.

36. Donny Sands – C, 6-foot-2, 190-pounds, RHB, 22-years-old – Sands didn’t play enough to glean anything from his stats, but he did play well while he was healthy this year. He had a .284/.347/.341/.688 line with five doubles in 27 games. He’s still learning the position defensively and has a long way to go. He’s a long-term project but he has a great hit tool and a great head on his shoulders.

37. Adonis Rosa – RHP, 6-foot-1, 160-pounds, 23-years-old – Rosa continues to fly under the radar despite three consecutive solid seasons. He had a 3.9 ERA and 104 K : 36 BB in 124.2 innings this season. Rosa sits in the low-90’s with his fastball, has a nasty changeup and a still developing curveball. He’s rule five eligible after this season, so I wouldn’t be shocked if he got popped there. He’s a nice prospect to have, although he is going to have a lot of trouble competing for innings in the upper minors with the current group.

38. Dalton Lehnan – LHP, 6-foot-3, 222-pounds, 22-years-old – Lehnan had a 3.63 ERA and 103 K : 53 BB in 116.2 innings this year. He pitched well in Charleston but struggled once he got up to High-A. He’ll sit low-90’s with the fastball but has nights where he is 93-96 mph. He also has a slider, curveball, and changeup. My guess is he is struggling a bit with control this year, but the stuff is good, and he should have continued success as he improves and moves up the ladder. It looks like a repeat of High-A is in the cards next season.

39. Pablo Olivares – CF, RHB, 6-foot-0, 160-pounds, 20-years-old – Olivares was a low dollar, low-key signing the Yankees made a few years ago who is now starting to come into his own. Before the season, he was noted to have impressive exit velocities by the Yankees scouting staff. Turns out this showed up in the numbers too. Olivares finished the season with a .322/.391/.442/.833 line, and had six homers, 11 doubles, and 10 SB in 70 games between Low-A and High-A. It was an impressive year, but he did get injured in early July and missed the rest of the season. Hopefully he’s back and healthy next season.

40. Ezequiel Duran – 2B, 5-foot-11, 185-pounds, 19-years-old – Duran had a disappointing season given the amount of hype he received just before opening day. He finished with a .201/.251/.311/.562 line with four homeruns, eight doubles, three triples, and seven stolen bases. He’s a guy who scouts were raving about prior to the season. It may have become a difficult adjustment for him to live in the United States and play under the lights for the first time. He gets a mulligan, especially given his tools. He’s got power, speed, and impressive bat to ball skills. Hopefully that translates into success in 2019.

41. Brandon Wagner – 1B, LHB, 6-foot-0, 210-pounds, 23-years-old – The local boy from Princeton followed up what was a solid season in 2017 with a fantastic season this year. He has one of the best seasons of any player on the farm. He hit .268/.381/.466/.847 with 21 homeruns between High-A and Double-A this year. It’s going to be tough for him to make it at first base, even with those numbers. That’s the only reason he’s this far down on the countdown. If he continues to improve the Yankees will have to take him seriously, because his numbers this year are attention grabbing.

42. Isiah Gilliam – OF, 6-foot-3, 220-pounds, SH, 22-years-old – Gilliam was solid if not spectacular this year, with a .262/.312/.400/.712 line. He finished with 13 homeruns, 22 doubles, and two triples. The power numbers took a step back this year in High-A, but the FSL is a pitcher friendly league. He still has good long-term power prospects, and I would expect continued improvement in 2019. He will likely start in Double-A.

43. Jason Lopez – C, 5-foot-10, 160-pounds, RHB, 20-years-old – Many were surprised by the season Lopez had in Low-A this year. I was not. He hit .271/.313/.431/.744 with eight homeruns and 19 doubles. He is a solid defensive catcher as well. His star is just beginning to rise, and he could develop into an Austin Romine type in due time, or maybe even better.

44. Janson Junk – RHP, 6-foot-1, 177-pounds, 22-years-old – Janson Junk has one of the funnest names on the farm, but he is anything but a junk-baller. He is more of a fireballer. He hits 95-96 mph on the radar gun, and has even been clocked at 98 mph. He slipped to the 22nd round because he needed work on his secondary offerings. It looks like the Yankees were able to fine tune them a bit, because he was rolled out as a starter this year and threw 88.1 innings of 3.77 ERA ball with 71 K : 31 BB. He was even better in the second half of the year, with a 3.5 ERA. His long-term role is probably still as a reliever, but it appears the Yankees are getting him the necessary experience to hone his skills. With that arm strength he could be a real sleeper, and a major bargain in the 22nd round.

45. Juan Then – RHP, 6-foot-1, 155-pounds, 18-years-old – Then performed well in the GCL in his first year with the Yankees. He made 11 starts and had a 2.7 ERA with 42 K : 11 BB in 50 innings. A recent first hand scouting report on him on Rotoworld states that he was hitting the mid-90’s and had a changeup that flashes plus and a curveball that comes and goes. Sounds to me like another high ceiling arm cooking in the minors.

46. Glenn Otto – RHP, 6-foot-5, 240-pounds, 22-years-old – In a sad turn of events, Glenn Otto ended up needing surgery after just his second start of the season because he had a blood clot in his axillary artery that needed to be removed. Because of that, he missed the entire season. Provided he doesn’t get any more blood clots, the good news is that there is nothing structurally wrong with the shoulder. If he comes back the same guy he was, this ranking is woefully low. The risk of his injury is cooked into the ranking though. When healthy, he throws a 92-95 mph fastball that hits 97 mph. He has a spike knuckle-curve that is allegedly devastating. The Yankees view him as a starter.

47. Frank German – RHP, 6-foot-2, 195-pounds, 20-years-old – He’s basically the 2018 draft version of Glenn Otto. He has a mid-90’s fastball, a curveball, and a changeup. He had an excellent season in Staten Island. He threw 27.1 innings, and had a 1.65 ERA with 38 K : 5 BB. That’s a solid debut. He should start next season in Charleston.

48. Ben Ruta – OF, 6-foot-3, 195-pounds, LHB, 24-years-old – It was a dream season for Ruta and he’s not the guy you would have expected to put up big numbers as a 30th round pick. He finished with a .300/.350/.441/.791 line with eight homers, 25 doubles, and seven triples between High-A and Double-A. He also had 37 SB. Ruta is an athletic, fast dude. He’s also a solid fielder. He has improved by leaps and bounds since being drafted in 2016. It would be great to see a 30th round pick turn out to be a useful player.

49. Stephen Tarpley – LHP, 6-foot-1, 235-pounds, 25-years-old – Tarpley is rule five draft eligible after this season and will almost assuredly be taken if they don’t protect him. As a lefty who has now had success at the highest level of the minors, he is a low risk proposition for teams. He finished the year between Double-A and Triple-A with a 1.94 ERA and 71 K :26 BB in 69.2 innings pitched. He also made his major league debut recently, although it was disappointing. He is still with the Yankees, and probably will be for the remainder of the season. Tarpley tops out at 94-95 mph and has a ton of movement on it. He also has a curveball, slider, and changeup. He pounds the strike zone and has good command.

50. Pedro Barrios – RHP, 6-foot-1, 199-pounds, 19-years-old – Barrios had a nice season overall, though he struggled a bit once he got to Pulaski. He had a 3.14 ERA with 52 K : 13 BB in 57.1 innings. Barrios has a 95 mph fastball and is working on developing a curveball and changeup. He is still raw and has a great deal of development left to go. At 19, he has plenty of time though.
