Skam show-runner Julie Andem clocking the fuck out of Mike being queer-coded in s1 of Stranger Things, and then using it as inspiration to queer-code Isak in s3 of Skam can be something so epic.

THIS! THIS is what I'm talking about!

In ST, there are two scenes in s1 (pretty/still pretty) that milkvans use as irrefutable proof that Mike has always had romantic feelings for El, with the primary object in the scene being a mirror.

THIS. MEANS. SOMETHING.

Mirrors in film mean something more often than not, but especially when they are the focus of a scene is when they definitely mean something. And the way they go about it differently in between those two scenes in ST, drastically differently, and considering the subject matter is very very queer coded, is how you really know there is a significance in this case.

And that scene above from Skam proves it.

Because apparently, another filmmaker watched ST, picked up on those odd details surrounding Mike and said shit I'm gonna use that...

Notice how Isak here, a gay teenager who is fully in denial with others and himself, to the point where he makes really homophobic remarks often, gets caught denying a bunch of girls as being attractive in a conversation with his friends. And so now they're questioning him and making him feel on edge bc the focus is on him and his attraction (lack thereof) to girls.

While his friends aren't even implying he is gay in this moment, it's just them genuinely being confused why he doesn't think any of the girls they think are attractive are attractive, you can still see that Isak starts to feel the pressure and so he latches onto the first girl he thinks of, Emma.

Emma just so happens to look like Natalie Portman with her extremely short hair.

Low and behold this very girl enters the room shortly after he says this and so now Isak has to face this and give his friends the impression he is fully interested in this girl, otherwise they would DEFINITELY suspect something is off. And so he goes all out.

He outs himself.

He literally says Don't you look like that boy from Stranger Things, and then follows it up with saying he would only be attracted to her if we're assuming he is attracted to boys, only to quickly backtrack and start to approach her really flirtatiously, then going all out by making out with her.

As this happens, he is kissing her in the bathroom, in front of a mirror...

Now I want to make clear, I am not saying ST was inspired by Skam. I'm pretty sure I did make that clear, it's actually the other way around, which is even more incriminating arguably.

S1 of Stranger Things came out in 2016, whereas s3 of Skam came out the following year in 2017. The hype for ST was so immense, to the point where you had Norwegian teens referencing it in everyday conversation.

The creator of Skam took scenes from ST that framed Mike very peculiarly in s1, and used it as queer-coding for a character that ended up being revealed as gay.

For those that haven't seen Skam Norway... Run. Leap. Drive. Teleport. Do what you have to do and go watch it. It's not available on any streaming, in fact it's only available online through fan-sites outside of where it's based. Conveniently, all 4 seasons with English subs can be found HERE.

Basically this show is amazing and you need to watch it. Some seasons I like more than others. But the gist of it is that every season focuses on a different character from the main group, where they experience some sort of misunderstanding/miscommunication that leads to them being misinformed about certain things, followed by them making mistakes and having doubts, though it tends to end in a way that feels so refreshing compared to what we're used to.

Skam also translates in english to shame, so the idea is that there is an arc surrounding some form of shame every season.

With Isak in particular, he's the focus for s3, though his arc starts to become more clear as early as the end of s1.

Eva, the character in focus for s1, borrows Isak’s phone to call someone, and ends up seeing that there's gay porn in a bunch of his tabs on his browser. Their friend Noora also witnesses this and she ends up being the focus of s2.

Throughout s2, we get even more blatant hints that Isak is gay and in love with his best friend...

So it's established pretty early on throughout the series that Isak is queer and in denial about it, but it isn't until s3 that he himself is able to confront it.

The way they go about this arc, with Isak having unrequited feelings, is exactly how ST would have done it IF Mike hadn't returned Will's feelings.

So if you're looking for more byler proof, go watch this show and see how they don't let Isak pine over his best friend Jonas for more than 2 seasons.

When the story finally puts Isak at the forefront, they give him his own love interest instead of keeping him pining for his friend. It's really pure and amazing and TBH I would have been fine if ST was framed this way, with it being clear from the beginning Isak's feelings were unrequited, and with the other half of the series focusing on him moving on and finding love himself, and also with his best friend and him still being very close.

Although Isak has that queer-coding from the very beginning, with him looking at his friend all fondly, he is still not able to confront any of it. The following season he dates a girl and is a little over the top about it, though we can also see that he is struggling despite not wanting to face it. It isn't until s3 when the story shows us his inner struggle at the forefront, that we see him finally confront it and accept it.

For those that don't know, Skam also loosely inspired the Nick Nelson gay test scene... So we have character that despite showing many signs of being queer, to the point where we know he literally watched gay porn, is still finding himself in a situation where he's taking gay tests 2 years later....

While he might have the knowledge deep down, he was not willing to face it. In fact he was doing everything he could to avoid confronting it.

But then he falls in love and suddenly it's not something he can ignore anymore...

The main house was a simple two room cabin with a small hallway connecting the two.

To the left was the bedroom, and to the right was the kitchen. The furniture was well worn and robust, and although the place was much less fancy than the Park home it seemed like a wealth of luxury to Charles Elias after his long journey.

Once inside Charles Elias was invited to sit at the dinner table, with the old man, who introduced himself as Isak, sitting at the head of the table.

"Now then," Isak said, "Why don't you explain why on earth you've come all this way to see Theodore, and I'll have my niece cook us up a nice warm meal while we talk."

Once Isak had called out to a younger girl, who walked in with barely a hello and who kept her gaze firmly away from the group, Charles Elias began telling everyone his story.

He skirted around the truth of who his father was, worried that it would reflect poorly on both Charles Elias, his mother and Theodore if it were to come out, and instead leaned heavily into Joseph's behaviour as the driving force of him leaving.

It wasn't technically a lie.

The more Charles Elias spoke, the more of his frustration poured out.

How angry he was at the man who had raised him for how he had been treated, how slighted he felt, how he reached a point where he just couldn't take it anymore.

And the more Charles Elias spoke, the sadder Theodore and Isak looked. They all knew their culture said you should always listen to and obey the head of the household, but they could also understand that a hurt and angry teenage boy might not follow those expectations.

Once Charles Elias was done, Theodore spoke up.

"Well," he said, "I certainly think you had cause to leave. It was a rash decision, but I can't find it within myself to hold it against you."

Charles Elias breathed a sigh of relief.

"Personally," Theodore continued, "And I hope you don't mind the suggestion, sir, I wouldn't be opposed to having you stay here and help out with the fishing. It's hard work, but it's honest work, and a strong young man such as yourself would do well."

"I-I wouldn't mind fishing, sir," Charles Elias said, glancing towards the man at the head of the table, "I promise I will work hard to earn my living if I you let me stay here."

"I don't see why not," Isak said, "Theodore staying with us has supported our family immensely, and having an extra hand here would do wonders."

Charles Elias smiled.

"I say you're welcome to stay in Theodore's cabin, and to work with us. Welcome, Charles Elias."

With the tension of weeks of travel gone, the conversation began to flow more freely.

Theodore and Charles Elias joked and reminisced, and Isak told a few far-fetched stories of his fishing days as a young man.

Finally, everything felt alright again.

Oh boy, oh boy! Get ready for historical info you guys, and thank you to everyone for your patience <3

Since I'll be covering two different topics, I'm gonna arrange it into different sub-headers to make reading easier.

Charles Elias' Path

We've discussed the Postal Road between Stockholm and Turku in the past, primarily looking into how it functioned in general.

As such, I won't go into all of that again, but will instead look at the path that Charles Elias took to reach Theodore.

Using this map as a base, I made a sketch of the path that Charles Elias took in order to reach Theodore.

I've always kept the exact village etc. where my sims live somewhat vague on purpose, mostly to have a little bit more room for storytelling.

But, in general terms, you can see what areas I've imagined Charles Elias started his journey from (blue) and where he ended it (red).

The blue X to the west marks the location of the postal harbour, which would have been the point where he turned east.

Now, if you were to make this journey today it would not take two weeks. With car you can make this journey in like maybe 40(?) minutes or so, and on foot google maps says such a walk would take aprox. 17 hours.

However! Keeping in mind that nowadays we have the luxury of modern, well-kept roads and easier modes of transport, I reckoned it made sense if the journey took longer.

There were less roads in general, most were dirt roads, and many small channels of water had to be crossed by boat or bridge. Taking into consideration setting up camp/sleeping somewhere and winter conditions and I figured it would make sense for such a journey to take much longer.

Inns

Set up along the postal road and larger roads at this time were a number of inns.

For the most part these inns were somewhat simple, and often mostly had a main room and some rooms for travelers. The primary people who came to the inns were people traveling along the postal road, primarily "officials, military, merchants and sometimes sailors and boatsmen". This we know since the inns were demanded to keep a diary of their visitors, some of which have survived to modern day.

The quality of the inns at this time varied, with some travel diaries bemoaning the quality, while others thought it was pretty okay. "Guests of higher social standing preferred to stay with priests instead."

This stunning 3-hr. 20-minute production, distilled from a 1,200-page novel, is bound for Broadway and beyond At age 21, Victor Hugo called for a new sort of fiction, on an epic scale to encompass the moral and social tumults of the 19th century, an era of urbanization industrialization and revolution. He produced such fiction in “Les Miserables” and now, 125 years after its publication, the novel has nurtured a new sort of theater. “Les Miz” is not a mere “musical.” All dialogue is sung, although scenes are carefully choreographed, there are none of the usual sort of musical “dance numbers." It represents a genre between theater and opera. 

It is the story of Jean Valjean. Compared to his experiences, those of Job were a week at the beach. Having served 19 years at hard labor for stealing a loaf of bread to feed a starving child, Valjean is released into a world of travail. One half of your brain — the sober, rational, conservative half — says of the production: This is mawkish, sub-Dickensian sentimentality and pernicious political twaddle, and we are being shamelessly manipulated. The squishy liberal side of your brain says: Yea, and isn’t it fun! 

The music is almost maddeningly hummable, and be warned: As was the case with the main theme from “Jesus Christ Superstar," themes from “Les Miz" will be brayed by marching bands in the purgatory of pageantry known as football halftime shows. Still, there is useful synergism in popular culture. The novel is proportional to its themes, which no stage version could cope with as well as print can. It is good reading for a city of government

Dostoevsky considered “Les Miserables” superior to “Crime and Punishment.” Soldiers in the American Civil War carried copies of it; some Confederates called themselves “Lee’s Miserables." In the 19th century, when electricity knew its place (lightning, the telegraph, a bit of lighting), there was, mercifully, no broadcasting. Books were popular entertainment, in part because the masses were learning to read, a dangerous development that fostered the spread of journalism and other problems.

okay!! so i have multiple answers for this one uwu

break me down, remake me -> this one took me almost the whole year to write and i stepped out of my comfort zone to do it. i do wish i had done some things differently, like maybe explored the nightmare more? but, overall, i am very very happy with this one! i think i may remix / do this concept over again tho <3

patience is a virtue (rewarded by sin) -> one of the few fics of mine i can reread and find no/very little issues with! it was written in 2 sittings, both of which after i just woke up xD

mouth full of white lies -> my first time writing smut that wasn't jaytim AND my first time writing sub tim. i'm also!! really pleased with dick's characterization in this

clove, smoke, and honey -> another fic where i stepped out of my comfort zone! i also didn't expect it to get as long as it did, OR to get as personally invested as i did. just. a surprise from beginning to end, and i'm just! so pleased with it

Newcastle 4-0 Spurs: Match Review

In the ornithology derby, the magpies reigned supreme over the cockerels.

Ouch. So that one hurt. I would have personally taken a draw from that game, even with Newcastle’s heavily depleted squad - but I never foresaw this happening. I suppose it’s better than the 6-1 thrashing last season that spelt the end of Stellini’s time at Spurs, but 4-0 without a reply is pretty bad.

Of course, as much as this hurts for Tottenham, it was an excellent result for Newcastle as it puts them 6th, 10 points below Spurs, and they’ll end the weekend above Manchester United on goal difference (17 to -1, yikes). The Toons’ hopes of European football remain alive, especially with a run-in of several bottom-half sides. On the other end, not only is the loss damaging for Tottenham’s top-four hopes (it lowered the goal difference to be under Aston Villa, who are now fourth), but it doesn’t bode well for the team and their next few fixtures, who have to play the top three and Chelsea.

In all honesty, I don’t want to talk about the match - I didn’t even stay long enough to see the fourth goal - but to summarise the game:

Spurs couldn’t deal with the high press, and it never looked like they were getting anything from it. Although they did create some half-chances (Werner notably missed a few), Newcastle created better-quality ones throughout the game.

Newcastle capitalised on mistakes from Spurs fullbacks Udogie and Porro, as Gordon bullied Udogie far too easily to assist Isak’s opener. An inexplicable pass from Porro moments after the restart gave Gordon an easy way to the second. Van de Ven created from comical moments trying to defend both of them, slipping for both and even doing an acrobatic headstand for the first goal.

Porro appeared to have injured his hamstring after halftime, and Isak then made it three on the counter from the halfway line only two minutes later. Not even Van de Ven could catch up, and Vicario probably should have come off his line for that one.

Spurs tried to change it up, taking off their defensive midfielders, who were largely anonymous, and their leading man, Son, who couldn’t get involved and, when he did, couldn’t hold onto the ball.

Spurs had a few half chances again, but Newcastle’s low block meant nothing meaningful went through.

Newcastle probably should have scored more from 16 corners - Isak, in particular, missed multiple free headers - given Spurs’ defensive set piece woes and the towering heights of Isak, Burn, and Schär. Still, they finally gave it one last stab at Spurs when the Swiss cornered a corner that Vicario was nowhere near.

This goal sealed the game, as Newcastle subbed on Hall (who hadn’t trained all week), Ritchie, White, and Dummett to see off a resounding result at St James’ Park.

Newcastle: The Start of a Great End of the Season

The Toons are finally showing some consistency after a bumpy season.

I’ll admit: For all of the pain Newcastle has inflicted on me (6-1 gives me war flashbacks), I actually quite like the team and have a bit of a soft spot for some of their players…bar Wilson. Apologies, but I’m a Richarlison defender, and I fear I haven’t forgiven him yet.

Newcastle knew Spurs’ weaknesses and exploited them to perfection - and probably could have done even more if Isak’s head could be as clinical as his feet. They caught Spurs off on the counter, pressed them hard and were quite physical (if you ask me, the referee lost a bit of control of the game very early on), got onto virtually every corner unless it didn’t beat the first man, and played a five back whenever the London team were on the attack.

Newcastle home and away are basically black and white (much like their kit), and this game proved how good they are at St James’ Park. I genuinely believe that they could lose every away game, concede ten goals every time, but still win ¾ of their home games. They also had a massive injury list, though it ended up with one less man as Livramento returned to the squad and even got some minutes, as expected from the scoreline. This is the kind of team Newcastle like to play against, and Howe got everything right.

Player Ratings

Dubravka (6): Had basically nothing to do and got a welcome, clean sheet.

Burn (7): He probably should have done better on set pieces, given he was marked by the 6’1” Johnson. Didn’t have much to do defensively, though he did get a high boot to Bentancur’s chin (he can thank his height for avoiding the yellow).

Schär (8): Unlike Burn, got the goal from a corner. Likewise had nothing to do otherwise.

Krafth (7): He had nothing to do defensively but got his clean sheet.

Murphy (6): He could have done more in the attack, but the out-of-position right-back did fine.

Anderson (7): An energetic showing and got close to scoring a few times. Personally, he surprised me.

Guimaraes (8): He did what he always does dutifully (though it wasn’t too hard) and got an assist to end the night.

Longstaff (6): Anonymous for me, but he didn’t have much to battle out on anyway.

Barnes (7): Energetic as ever, maybe unfortunate not to have left with a goal contribution.

Isak (9): He scored a brace and should have had more. A great night for the striker, whose home form remains spectacular.

Gordon (9): His form this season has been a joy to watch, even if he would prefer to play on the left wing. His corners were generally excellent, and most of Newcastle’s chances went through him.

Livramento (N/A): I didn’t watch long enough to see him subbed, but it was good to see him get some minutes after getting injured in the West Ham game.

Lewis Hall (N/A): With this win, the buy clause in his loan from Chelsea is activated, and Hall will remain with his boyhood club beyond this season.

Tottenham Hotspur: The 6-1 Demons Come Back To Haunt Them

I hate to quote Arteta, but this performance was a disgrace (and they aren’t getting away with this one).

I don’t want to talk about this performance from Spurs; I think I’ve said enough really. Van de Ven sums it up quite nicely in the photo.

However, I do want to add that I wish Postecoglou had made those changes at halftime instead of at the hour mark.

Player Ratings

Vicario (4): Technically, he wasn’t at fault for any of the goals, but he conceded four and should have probably done better despite a few good saves.

Udogie (4): Gordon bullied him far too easily for the first goal but was fine otherwise, although Spurs were flat anyway.

Van de Ven (3): Comical defending and his recovery pace couldn’t save Spurs from conceding the third.

Romero (4): Again, technically not at direct fault, but really should have done better. Started looking like the old, rash Romero and didn’t help the backline.

Porro (3): Didn’t provide much, but the assist for the second with a poor, poor backpass. He was subbed off for injury, and hopefully, it isn’t too bad.

Bentancur (4): I mean…he was okay but didn’t provide much in attack or defensive.

Bissouma (3): He gave me anxiety every time he had the ball. He should’ve provided more protection as a number 6.

Maddison (5): He occasionally created a few half-chances, but it felt like he lost his head early and was booed the entire time, as usual.

Werner (4): Had a chance, but the ball was at an awkward height. Otherwise quiet.

Son (4): He hasn’t been up to his performance-wise standards lately, and the decision to sub Son for Kulusevski was bold but welcome.

Johnson (4): Again, quiet but was slightly better in the central role after Kulusevski’s substitution, although the bar is very, very low.

Royal (4): Didn’t do much to help defensively and did concede 2 goals.

Sarr (4): Not the sort of game Sarr thrives in, but the midfield needed a change. At least he brought on some fresh legs.

Hojbjerg (4): I thought he’d start. Had a few nice ideas but poor executions, like most of the team. For me, this sort of game really highlights his weakness on a possession-based side. But he was better than Bissouma, although Newcastle stopped stepping on the pedal a bit.

Kulusevski (4): He brought a bit of life when he came on, even if it was temporary and very little, though he’s somewhat at fault for the last goal. Thought he should have been subbed on at the 45-minute mark for some control.

Lo Celso (N/A): I stopped watching at this point. It's not a game in which he’d thrive anyway.

Unused players: Austin, Dragusin, Davies, Gil

What’s Next

The North London Derby looms for Tottenham Hotspur…

Due to Manchester City’s involvement in the FA Cup semi final, Spurs have a two-week break until their next game, when they will host rivals Arsenal for the North London Derby. This marks a run of challenging games for Spurs, who play Arsenal (H), Chelsea (A), and Liverpool (A) next before playing Manchester City (H) not soon after. It’s very much possible that Spurs will get a fat zero points out of 12 in these games, especially with their recent form, with their away form in particular being a considerable concern. The Lilywhites’ final two games are against relegation-threatened sides Burnley (H) and Sheffield United (A), though points here may not save them on their way to a Champions League spot.

With their massive goal difference, Newcastle’s next few fixtures could bounce them above West Ham and Manchester United - as well as threaten Spurs - for good as they play Palace (A), Sheffield United (H) and Burnley (A) next. The Toons’ away form may be questionable (14 points from a possible 45), but that should be at least six points from those three games alone. Newcastle have one last home game against Brighton - another very winnable game considering the Seagulls’ similarly horrid away form this season. Otherwise, they play Manchester United and Brentford away. They could give Spurs a run for their money with these fixtures as they look to secure Europa football, especially if fifth place fails to guarantee Champions League football.

Newcastle and Spurs will meet again for a post-season friendly in Melbourne before their respective players and staff head off for a well-deserved summer break after a busy season - though less busy than usual for Spurs without European and many Cup games, hence this friendly.

Match Review

This photo hurts more and more.

Unless you’re a Newcastle or Aston Villa fan, I struggle to see the appeal of this game as it’s very one-sided, and the goals weren’t too impressive, given they were basically gifts from the Spurs players. It only felt like one team was trying throughout, and especially given the game's stakes, it felt like a major let-off.
