The first thing Naomi notices when she crosses the threshold to Ethan’s apartment is that it smells amazing. A delicious aroma wafts from the kitchen and she has to stop herself from drooling at the scent.
This is the second time this week that she’s been at his apartment, though this time Ethan promises that there will be no surprise interruptions. And this makes Naomi anxious, because the last time she was here, Ethan kissed her, multiple times, and promised that they’d talk. And with a little over a year of knowing the older attending under her belt, Naomi knows that Ethan Ramsey is a puzzle and he’s constantly pulling the rug out from under her feet. So her guard is up, despite wanting to be able to relax in his presence.
Ethan greets her at the door, out of his formal work clothes and now in a simple t-shirt and blue jeans.
“Naomi, hi.” His eyes sweep over her form, and he tries not to get fixated on the way her dark blue sweater hugs every curve on her body. “You look great.”
“Thank you.”
“It smells amazing in here.” Once she’s inside and her shoes are at the door, Naomi stands on her tiptoes, peering into the kitchen. She sees a huge skillet and a pot on the stove, but it gives her no answers. “Can I know what you’re cooking, or are you going for an element of surprise?”
“Chicken, sautéed in peppers, yellow rice and roasted asparagus. Do you have any objections about the menu?”
“It sounds delicious.” She stops at his kitchen island and takes a seat at one of the barstools.
“Do you want something to drink? I have pretty much everything.”
“What’s the best wine in your collection?” Naomi asks. “I’d like a glass of that.”
Ethan turns around and goes to rummage in his pantry. “I have a very expensive bottle that a patient gifted Naveen a while back. Her rich “boyfriend” owns a vineyard in Napa, and after we solved her case, she had him send Naveen quite a few bottles. He gave me one.”
He rinses out two glasses and pours the expensive Chardonnay.
“Air quotes around the word boyfriend leads me to assume he was her sugar daddy.”
“Her very married sugar daddy,” Ethan adds. “Splitting his time between Napa and New England.”
“Scandalous.”
“His vineyard makes excellent wine, though.”
Naomi takes a sip and instantly agrees with Ethan. The smooth liquid is delicious. “Mhmm, I can taste the vanilla.”
“You have excellent taste for a 27 year old.”
“It’s a cross I have to bear,” Naomi teases with a giggle. “Do you need any help with dinner?”
“No. You’re my guest, you just sit there and relax.”
She leans across the counter and watches as Ethan expertly chops up jalapeño peppers.
“I’m not used to being in a kitchen and not helping,” Naomi says with a sigh. “I used to practically study my mom and grandma growing up.”
“Oh, so you like to cook too?”
“I love it. I love food. Every Sunday after church, we’d go to my grandparents’ house for football and dinner.”
“What’s your favorite thing to cook?” Ethan asks. Naomi doesn’t talk much about her life before Edenbrook, and he’s curious.
“My grandma has a recipe for pot roast and garlic mashed potatoes that will make you cry.”
“Oh yeah? What’s the secret?”
“It’s for Valentine women only, mister. My mom didn’t get the recipe until she and my dad had been married for 10 years.”
“It’s that serious?”
Naomi nods. “Super serious. She’s really protective over her recipes, and she wants the rest of the family to be just as guarded. My uncle once suggested she write a cookbook, and she nearly tore him a new one.”
Ethan notes the sparkle in her eye as she talks about her family and he can’t help but to smile. “Okay, since you’re the expert, I’ll let you help me.”
“Really?”
“Really.”
“Yay! But first, I cannot cook in silence. We’re going to need some music.”
“In the living room, next to the window, I have a record player. Pick whatever you’d like.”
“A record player?” Naomi slides off the barstool and rushes to the living room. “You’re an old soul.”
“I like records. I think they’re cooler than CDs.”
Naomi browses through his selection of vinyls. He had a mixture of a lot of different artists and genres: Billie Holiday, Michael Jackson, Prince, David Bowie, Queen, James Brown, Nina Simone, The Beatles. There was even some classical music by Beethoven thrown into the collection.
She settles on Billie. “You have good taste, Doctor Ramsey.”
Soon she’s back in the kitchen, hands washed, sleeves rolled up, and hair pulled back. They settle into a comfortable routine. She minces garlic as Ethan gets the rice started.
Ethan enjoys her presence in his kitchen. There’s no tension in the air, the silence isn’t deafening, and Naomi moves around with ease and confidence, as if the space was made just for her. He chooses to ignore the way his pulse speeds up at the thought.
With two people helping, it doesn’t take long for dinner to be served. Ethan tops off their wine, fixes two plates, and moves them into his formal dining area.
“I had no idea this little dining area was tucked back here,” Naomi says, looking around. “Just how huge is this apartment? Does it have a second floor that I’m not aware of?”
Ethan rolls his eyes at her wide cracks. “No second floor. But it’s a 3 bedroom.”
“3? How did I not notice that?”
“Well the last time you were here we only stayed in the kitchen. And the time before that we–”
He stops himself before he can finish the sentence. The time before the last, they barely stayed in the living room for a few minutes before Ethan was dragging her into his bedroom.
Naomi looks down, her face burning at the memory. Thinking about their previous...encounter wasn’t her intention in the slightest. She groans to herself. This is what she gets for trying to make dumb small talk.
She pivots, not allowing them any more time to ruminate over the hook up. “Well you’ll have to give me a tour.”
“Deal.”
Naomi grabs her fork and digs into her food, taking a bite of her chicken. A low heat coats her taste buds, followed by the buttery flavor of the meat. A soft sigh passes her lips. “Okay, I know you love being a doctor, and you’re great at it, but I think you’d be an amazing chef.”
“Of course I’d be an amazing chef, I’m good at everything,” Ethan quips with a smirk.
“Your ego is unmatched.”
“But seriously, the food is good?”
His voice takes on an uncharacteristically low and shy tone. Naomi looks up at him and they lock eyes. He’s...nervous, she quickly surmises.
“The food is great, Ethan. If it wasn’t, you’d know.”
He smiles at her, relief coursing through his veins. Sure he knows he’s a good cook, but something about her praise and validation makes him feel like a teenager again.
“Good.”
“I might have you cook for me more often,” Naomi adds, lifting her wine glass to her lips and takes a sip. “How many other people get to say the great Ethan Ramsey made them dinner?”
“It’s just you,” Ethan replies. “And of course, you’re welcome over any time.”
“Don’t tempt me with a good time. I just might take you up on that offer.”
“Please do.”
The rest of their dinner goes by, the two of them embroiled in light conversation. Once dinner is done, Ethan instructs her to head to his living room while he puts the dishes in the sink. A few minutes later, he comes back with two slices of cake, and two more glasses of wine, red this time to complement the chocolate of their dessert.
“Ooh, I get dessert too? My, my, You’re really spoiling me tonight.”
“Don’t get used to it,” Ethan grumbles.
“Too late.” Naomi eagerly accepts her slice of cake. “Did you bake this?”
“Would you be impressed if I said yes?”
“I’d be very impressed.”
“But no, I can't take credit for this. There’s a bakery a few blocks away, and they make the best chocolate cake.”
“That’s a hefty endorsement coming from you.”
“Trust me, you’ll love it.”
Ethan sits down next to Naomi, leaving little room between the two of them, but just enough. At this distance, he can smell whatever sweet perfume she’s wearing, mixed with her shampoo—coconut scented, that much he knows for certain—it it’s effects on him are dizzy and intoxicating.
“How did your talk with your dad go the other day?” Naomi asks. Being questioned about his dad wasn’t what he was expecting, and it snaps him out of his daze.
“Huh?”
“How did your talk with Alan go?”
Ethan stops to seriously consider the question. His talk with his dad brought up a lot of feelings, good and bad, about a lot of different things. “I think he and I understand each other more. Love is still a pretty foreign concept to me, so I don’t think I’ll ever truly understand the depth of what he feels towards my mother, but I’m going to try to be more compassionate about them.”
“And I told him that him continuing to hold a flame for my mother fueled a lot of my anger,” Ethan continues. “It used to feel like he was willing to forgive her for hurting me. No matter what she did, all would be okay as long as she came back. Of course, he didn’t realize my perspective, and he apologized. We both realized that our views of my mom were going to be inherently different. And he agreed to stop trying to get me to talk to her.”
Naomi is glad to hear he made some peace with his dad. Alan seems like a sweet guy. “Do you think you’ll ever want to see her?”
A stony expression mars his features. “No. I’m not in a space to hear whatever bullshit excuse she spits out, nor do I want to hear any apologies. I’ve survived 25 years without her, I’ll survive 25 more.”
The energy in the room has taken a sharp turn. Naomi puts her plate down on the coffee table and takes Ethan’s hand in hers, her thumb running across his knuckles in a soothing manner. The simple gesture catches him off guard, and he looks at the younger woman.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to make you upset with my line of questioning.”
“I’m not upset with you,” Ethan assures her. She’s the last person he’d be upset with considering she’s been his rock throughout this entire ordeal. “And I shouldn’t be burdening you with this.”
“You’re not being a burden, Ethan.”
“Regardless, I didn’t invite you over here to be bogged down by my family drama.”
Naomi looks down at their still joined hands, and she swallows thickly. “Okay, did you invite me over here to talk about our kiss?”
The corner of his mouth quirks up at the question. “I’ve always admired your boldness, Rookie. You get straight to the point no matter what.”
“No point in beating around the bush,” Naomi says with a shrug. Reluctantly, she pulls her hand out of his and turns her body so they’re facing each other. “Look Ethan, you said that we needed boundaries, and outside of our kiss at Donahue’s a few months back, I’ve been trying my absolute hardest to be respectful. But now you’re sending me mixed signals. First when we went to stake out your mom a few weeks back, you held my hand the entire way back to Boston. And then you kissed me the other day, a few times. Now I’m at your apartment again. I need to know what we’re doing, because you’re blurring the lines.”
Ethan sighs. He feels like a selfish asshole, jerking her around like this. “Look, Naomi, I thought our relationship was going to be that of a mentor and mentee–and it is, but it’s become so much more than that. You are one of the most important people in my life. You are the one person I want to turn to when things feel crazy, whether it’s about work or my personal life.”
“And…?”
“I’m getting there, Rookie,” Ethan chuckles softly, and her stomach flips at her old nickname. “Look, all my life, I’ve only ever viewed things in black and white, and it was easy for me. But you came barreling into my life, and not only can I see shades of grey, but I see the entire color spectrum. You push me, you challenge me, you drive me absolutely insane.” Naomi laughs. “But it’s becoming increasingly harder to respect my self-imposed boundaries when it comes to you.”
“What are you saying?”
“I’m saying that I think it’s time I stop trying to hold myself back when it comes to you.”
Naomi’s too afraid to move. To breathe, even. What if this is some sort of dream? She’s going to wake up soon, in her own bedroom, alone, disappointed and full of self loathing. “So, what? Do you want to give us a try?”
“Yes, I want to give us a try. That is, if you still want to give me a chance. I know I probably don’t deserve one.”
Hearing those words is akin to a dam breaking inside of her. The air leaves her lungs all at once and her vision goes blurry with unshed tears.
Crying wasn’t the reaction he thought he was going to get from her. Ethan reaches out, gently swiping the pad of his thumb underneath her eye. “Naomi, what–”
She cuts him off, grabbing his face with both hands, crashing their lips together. He barely has time to toss his plate onto the table before she’s clamoring into his lap, straddling him.
This kiss feels so much like the one they shared a few nights ago. It’s frenzied, desperate, and filled with longing, but there’s an undercurrent of something else, something they haven’t felt before. Relief. Lightness.
Ethan’s tongue presses against her lips, silently asking for permission to deepen things. Naomi responds, opening her mouth to grant him entrance.
She clings to him, grabbing all that her hands can. His shoulders, his neck, his soft t-shirt. She needs some sort of permanence to ground her to the moment and let her know that this isn’t a dream. It’s real.
Ethan’s hands move from her hips, aiming higher until they’re under her sweater. His fingers burn, and he’s not sure if his brain is playing tricks on him because he’s consumed quite a few glasses of wine, or if the feel of her skin has that effect on him. Whatever the case, he welcomes the white-hot sensation, greedily searching for more surface area. Finally he settles on her back, his hands running around her spine, making her shudder.
They only pull apart because the need to breathe is much stronger than their desire to stay joined. But it doesn’t last long, as Naomi quickly kisses him again.
“I’ve missed you,” she confesses when she pulls away. Ethan notes the vulnerability in her eyes as she comes to rest her forehead against his. “I’ve missed this.”
“I’ve missed you too. You have no idea how much.”
She bites her lip in contemplation and Ethan swears it might be his favorite sight. “Please tell me this is real. Tell me you won’t wake up tomorrow and change your mind.”
Reluctantly, his hands drop from the small of her back. He uses one to tilt her chin up, forcing eye contact between the two. “I’m not going anywhere, Naomi.”
“Promise?”
“I promise.”
They kiss again, a softness filling them this time around. Her fingers pull at the hem of his shirt, tugging it, urging him to remove the piece of fabric.
“Naomi, stop,” Ethan orders gently.
She breaks the kiss, confused. “What?”
“We need to stop,” Ethan pants heavily. His heart is beating erratically against his rib cage, and if she keeps kissing him like this, and touching him like this, he’s going to lose all of his will.
“What’s wrong?”
“If we don’t stop now, I won’t be able to stop myself from escalating this and taking you into my bedroom.”
Naomi shivers against him. “Is that a promise?”
“You have no idea. But I want us to take this slow. I want to do this right.”
“Oh yeah?” He can tell by the twinkle in her eye that she’s going to tease me. “Are you going to court me, old man?”
Ethan wraps his arm around her waist, pulling her closer. She groans at the contact. “Call me old one more time, Rookie.”
Naomi is never one to back down from a challenge, but she doesn’t want to take things further knowing he wants to move slowly. “I think it’s sweet.”
“I just really don’t want to mess things up with you.”
“I don’t want to either.”
Naomi moves off of his lap, creating some distance. She smooths out her sweater, which is currently twisted around her midsection.
She checks the time on her watch. “It’s getting late, I think I should go.”
“You don’t have to leave.”
“I know, but I think it’d be better for both of us if we ended things here. I don’t want to test your restraint any more.”
“Thank you. Do you need me to take you home?”
“I’ll call an Uber.”
“I’ll walk you out.”
Naomi quickly calls for a car using the app. They find their shoes, enjoying the comfort of each other’s presence. They hold hands the entire way down, sharing shy smiles and glances.
The air between the two of them feels so different now. Like a weight has been lifted off of both their shoulders, they revel in the newfound lightness and change in their relationship.
They stand in front of his apartment complex as they wait for her ride to arrive, their hands still joined together. It’s late at night, but the city is still lit up, and all of the lights reflect off of Naomi as she stares at her surroundings. Ethan clears his throat, gaining her attention.
“So I was thinking, how about we go out this weekend,” he suggests. “There’s a new exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts.”
“We agreed to date a few short minutes ago, and you already have a date planned.”
Ethan shrugs. “Well, I’ve had this evening planned out for the past 48 hours.”
Naomi smirks at him. “And you were just so sure I would say yes to you?”
“Call it a hunch.”
A car matching the description of Naomi’s rideshare pulls up along the curb. “This is my ride.”
Before she can open the car door, Ethan yanks her hand and spins her around. He kisses her again, his warm hand cupping her jaw. He pulls away quickly, leaving her breathless. “One more for the road. Call me when you get home, okay.”
“Of course.” Naomi smiles. “See you tomorrow, Ethan.”
“Goodnight, Naomi.”
She enters the car and Ethan watches as it drives off. He stands on the sidewalk for a long time after she’s gone, as if he’s still in a daze. The entire night feels surreal, and he almost can’t believe things worked out the way they did.
He knows one thing for sure: he’ll be forever grateful for his ability to cook.

Buddie + 3? I'm living vicariously through you and several others with this ship ^^;
Valentine’s day at the firehouse always sucked, in Buck’s humble opinion. His last few had been miserable (the date with Abby was nice, the impromptu tracheotomy not so much). And now that Bobby was married, suddenly Buck was one of the last single people on their shift.
“Oh cheer up, Buck,” Hen teased as she caught sight of his moping face. “You’re not the only single person in the firehouse this year.”
She then sent a significant glance towards Eddie’s back and Buck didn’t know whether or not to be sad or comforted. He settled on sad, giving Hen the briefest acknowledgement, before returning to staring at the back of Eddie’s LAFD shirt bearing his name.
The thing was bothering Buck most, however, was that he knew Eddie wasn’t supposed to be single.
Eddie was supposed to be spending this Valentine’s day with Shannon. But that option had been taken from him in the most tragic way. Not only had Shannon asked for a divorce, but she’d been hit by a car. Eddie hadn’t even had a chance to make things right before Shannon was gone. It wasn’t fair.
Before Buck could spiral further into his own thoughts of tragedy, self-pity, and sadness -- both for himself and for his best friend slash unrequited love -- Eddie turned and offered Buck a beaming smile that sunk right into his heart.
“Hey Buck,” Eddie greeted, slapping Buck on the shoulder with a hand and giving it a gentle squeeze -- an act reminiscent of a day in the not too distant past where Eddie had broken through the final lock on Buck’s heart. “Have any plans for today?”
Buck shrugged. “Oh, you know, pizza and Star Trek. It’s really just another day when you’re single.”
“True that!” Chimney called from the balcony, and a there was a swell of chuckles that followed. When the echoes died out, as they finished bouncing around the spacious concrete structure, Eddie turned back to Buck with those hyperfocused eyes.
“There’s nobody in this world I trust with my son more than you.”
“So why don’t you come over and do pizza and Star Trek with me and Christopher? We can make it a boy’s night. I’ll even spring for beers.”
Buck’s heart lurched in his chest and then quickly shifted into fluttering almost painfully as a tiny bubble of hope rose up. He tried desperately to quash it and play off his agreement with nonchalance. “Oh, yeah, sure! That sounds great. I’ll bring the pies.”
Eddie gave that heartwarming half smile that sent Buck’s heart into a tizzy as he clapped Buck’s shoulder one last time. “Sounds great. See you at six?”
“Yeah,” Buck dry swallowed. “Six.”
As Eddie’s retreating back disappeared out of sight, Buck heard a faint clicking. He turned to his left and saw Chim and Hen with their arms crossed, Hen with her head bowed as she shook it back and forth, clicking her tongue.
“Boys,” she muttered with heavy exasperation.
Chimney nodded sagely at her side. “You said it.”
---
Buck pulled up to Eddie’s house at 6:03 PM after having showered and shaved (slightly), with piping hot pizza from Giovanni’s, the small local restaurant that was only ten minutes from Eddie’s place and was an immediate favorite of Christopher’s. There were two boxes -- one, a standard combination pizza for Eddie and Buck, and a smaller pepperoni and mushroom pizza for Christopher.
Knocking once for an air of politeness, Buck shouldered open the door with a practiced ease. “I’ve got pizza!” he called into the apartment. There was an immediate flurry of noise as Christopher came barreling down the hall as fast as his crutches would carry him before he collided hard with Buck’s midriff.
“Buck!” Christopher was chanting, hugging Buck tightly. “Buck! Buck! Buck!”
“Hey, buddy!” Buck slid the pizza boxes onto Eddie’s counters before reaching down to envelop his favorite kid in a tight, protective hug. One hand landed on the back of Christopher’s head the way it had when he’d pulled Christopher from the water all those months ago. All Buck wanted to do was wrap Christopher up in his arms and keep him safe forever, but experience had taught him that you couldn’t wrap up kids in bubble wrap.
“Buck! It’s boy’s night!” Christopher crowed happily before detaching himself from Buck and moving back into the living room. “Gonna watch Star Trek with us, Buck?”
“You know it!” Buck grinned, glancing up as Eddie entered from the hallway with a soft smile. Buck’s heart did a backflip. Eddie’s hair was damp, and so was the collar of his shirt -- he must have just gotten out of the shower. He looked so clean he was almost glowing (but Buck was almost positive that Eddie glowed even after a four-alarm fire with his hair sweat matted and his face smeared with soot).
“Thanks for coming Buck,” Eddie said softly as he went for the pizza, using the disposable plates Giovanni’s had provided. “Beer’s in the fridge. I’ll get the disk loaded up in the DVD player.”
Buck grabbed two beers and a bottle of IBC Root Beer for Christopher (Eddie’s way to help Christopher feel included when the adults had their ‘grown-up drinks’). He popped the tops and set them on the coasters spread across the coffee table. Christopher had plopped himself into a special ‘movie theater’ seat that Eddie had bought off eBay. It had a cup holder and it reclined like the fancy new seats that were sweeping the nation, but it was miniature and just the right size for an eager seven-year old to use as he ate his pizza from the coffee table.
“So, what episodes are we watching?” Buck asked curiously from the couch where he had unceremoniously thrown himself, leaving just enough space for Eddie who shoved his legs out of the way before sitting.
“Wait, you actually meant the TV show?” Eddie asked, sounding genuinely surprised. “What happened to the Buck who didn’t care about anything that was made before you were born?”
Buck felt his face heat as he grew flustered. “Well, I just knew it was Christopher’s favorite show that he shared with you so I started watching it. I’m not very far -- I fall asleep a lot when it’s on. But I think I’m in Season 2?”
Eddie looked gobsmacked. It took a second but he shook his head, seeming to regain his composure. “We’re actually watching the 2009 movie with Chris Pine. Lots of explosions and action sequences. We thought it was more your style.”
“And sky-diving!” Chris piped up from the floor. “They go sky-diving!”
Both Eddie and Buck laughed, and Eddie took that moment to hit play on the menu screen before he settled in with his pizza, nestled just close enough to Buck to be absolutely maddening. Buck watched the film with moderate interest -- he’d seen it when it had first hit the theaters with his friends back in Pennsylvania but he hadn’t been super interested in the sci-fi genre at the time.
But now he wanted to watch and appreciate the film for what it stood for as a representation of his growing closeness with Eddie and Christopher.
It was just damn hard with Eddie’s leg burning a brand into his knee through the entire two and a half hour film.
Buck was so screwed.
---
After the film ended, Buck hung around on the couch as Eddie got Christopher ready for bed. He laughed as Christopher kept trying to convince his dad to let them watch at least one episode of the original Star Trek series before bed, but Eddie wasn’t swayed.
“It might be Valentine’s and you might have had too much candy at school, but it’s still a school night and that means bedtime is at 8:30. We’re already late on getting you into pajamas and teeth brushing!”
“But dad! Buck hasn’t seen Tribbles!”
“Tribbles can wait until the next boy’s night, okay?” Buck called down the hall, craning his neck around the corner to see Christopher, half in his pajamas and partially in the doorway of the bathroom where he was standing toe to toe with Eddie. At Buck’s words, however, Christopher gave in, allowing Eddie to usher him back into the bathroom with a grateful smile sent back down the hall to Buck.
After that it took no time at all to get Christopher tucked into bed with one final, “Good night, Buck,” followed by a warm hug and the soft sounds of Eddie telling his son one last story before the door to Christopher’s bedroom shut with a muted click.
Eddie’s feet dragged down the hallway with soft heavy padding noises before the frazzled father himself rounded the corner and he collapsed onto the couch, his head nearly in Buck’s lap. Eddie stared at the ceiling for a long moment and Buck took that moment to stare at Eddie.
“Thanks for coming over tonight Buck,” Eddie sighed, his eyes drifting shut for a few long moments. “We both really needed this.”
“Yeah,” Buck replied, desperately trying to keep his voice from cracking with all of the emotion behind it. He failed. “Anytime.”
Buck paused, then continued -- “And it’s not like I had anyone that wanted to spend Valentine’s day with me anyway.”
From his position on the couch, Eddie stiffened, his eyes still remaining shut -- though now with some apparent effort. After a few moments of deliberation, Eddie sat up turning to face Buck with a heavy expression.
“I wanted to spend Valentine’s day with you, Buck. That’s why I invited you.”
It was like a punch to the solar plexus and Buck reeled backwards. “But -- but I thought you only offered because my whole plan for the day sounded pathetic.”
Eddie’s hand was on his shoulder again, warm and solid and strong.
“I was the one who asked you what you were doing today, Buck. I wanted to invite you over. I just thought your plans would be fun with the three of us.”
Buck’s heart tripped and he felt short of breath. “Wait, so -- so it’s Valentine’s day, and you wanted -- you wanted -- but it’s not like -- I mean you’re not -- you haven’t been flirting with me or anything!” he sputtered, stumbling over his words.
Where Buck was flustered and buzzing, Eddie was calm and steady.
“Buck, I’m flirting with you. I have been since the day I met you.”
“But you -- Christopher -- I don’t -- wait --,” Buck’s breaths were coming in hard and heavy and he suddenly found himself with nearly a lap full of Eddie Diaz as Eddie’s hands cupped his face and the other man drew himself closer.
“Buck, Buck,” Eddie stressed, pointing Buck’s face towards his own, “look at me Buck. Deep breaths. I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have… I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable. Or to break your trust, but I --”
Whatever apologies or retractions Eddie had set to spill from his lips were silenced as Buck leaned forward quickly and pressed his lips against Eddie’s. Buck didn’t want the apologies or retractions or the ‘We can pretend this never happened’. He wanted this. He wanted nights watching cheesy sci-fi remake films and eating pizza and hugging Christopher good night. He wanted Eddie Diaz pressed next to him from shoulder to ankle, warm and real. He wanted all of this -- but he’d just been too afraid to say so.
Buck pulled away from Eddie’s soft and incredibly willing lips with a soft smack, feeling Eddie’s exhale brush gently against his skin. Eddie’s thumbs brushed over his cheekbones softly and sent a thrill up Buck’s spine.
“I’ve been flirting with you too,” Buck said softly, through a smile that he thought might actually break his face.
Eddie grinned then, that same bright indulgent smile that seemed to be reserved only for Buck. He pecked Buck on the lips quickly before pulling away, their smiles making it difficult to do much more.
“You’re incredible, you know that right?”
Buck couldn’t help the smirk that creeped onto his face. “So I’ve been told.”
“Shut up.”
Eddie shouldered Buck hard, sending Buck rocking back away towards the other end of the couch -- laughing all the way. But it was worth it, seeing Eddie’s pink tinged cheeks as he rolled his eyes, taking one final swig from his beer.
Evan ‘Buck’ Buckley was in love with his best friend, and it turned out that when your best friend loved you back? Valentines Day didn’t suck as bad after all.

Say Something - Pt. 3
Here is the final part of this mini-series that I started with What’s A Valentine and Can We Talk.
Summary: Danielle and Erik finally have that talk. Or not?
A/N: This kind of got away from me but I do like how it turned out. So, enjoy my runaway chapter.
Danielle stands away from the door to allow Erik space to walk through. She looks down at her pajamas, just a tank top and matching silk shorts, before closing the door. Erik has set up the ice cream on her counter and starting pulling bowls down from the cabinet.
“Do you want a lil bit of everything before I take most of the vanilla?”
“Yeah, thanks.” Dani leans against the counter, just watching him scoop ice cream into the bowls. Fiddling with her fingers, “Erik, I –“ He stops her.
“Nope, not yet.” He waves her away. “Go sit down and I’ll bring it when I am done.” She does as he says, moving slowly towards the living room and her couch.
Everything seems so heavy now. Yes, she was getting ready to call him to set up this talk. However, she was not prepared to have this talk tonight, right now, at this minute. Slumping down onto her couch, Dani pulls her legs up to her chest and wraps her arms around herself. Closing her eyes to settle her nerves that have picked up, she jumps when she feels the couch move.
“My bad, I didn’t mean to startle you.” Erik has placed their bowls of ice cream on the coffee table. He had pulled his jacket off and rolled up the sleeves to his button-up. “Eat up before it melts. We don’t have to say anything yet.” Dani silently nods at him and picks up her bowl. She smiles when she notices that he topped it off with a few caramel kisses.
They both eat their ice cream in silence. Both were taking furtive glances at one another, hoping the other does not catch them. Their eyes meet a few times, and each time they maintained eye contact just a little bit longer.
Erik finishes his bowl first and sits back waiting for Danielle to finish hers or start talking. He had no idea what to expect when he showed up on her doorstep unannounced, but she had not been responding to any contact from him in the past three days. He knows that she was supposed to talk with Shaun about their relationship. But he was really trying to see her before he left like they had planned. When he had not heard from her that first day, he figured they worked things out and just wanted to do lunch with his bestie.
After the second day, of no contact, he became worried. By then, she stopped reading his texts messages, which meant she definitely had not heard any of his voicemails either. Once again, he found himself doubting his actions, and if he waited too long to be honest with her about how he felt. It was not like he expected her to wait for him or anything. In fact, he was surprised when he discovered that she never married and was just dating.
Shaking his head, he thinks about how the day he decided to pop-up in person, just happened to be the night, her boyfriend planned to propose. Perfect timing, as usual, Erik, he chastises himself. He never could get it together or right as far as Danielle was concerned. He knew that even if he could never have her like he wanted, that he still wanted her friendship; they had always been great together on that front. He runs his hands down his face as he tries to find a comfortable sitting position.
Danielle has been watching as Erik shifts around on the other side of the couch. The couch that they slept on together, just last week. His big muscular arms wrapped around her, making her feel small but safe and secure with him. Sighing, she continues to eat the soft ice cream. He appears deep in thought and almost fearful; his facial features are tight, and he no longer looks as relaxed as he was when he walked into her place.
What could have him so worried? Yes, I have been ignoring him, but I just needed time. And he gave you that. I just got out of a long-term relationship. I still don’t understand my feelings towards him. She crosses her legs underneath her and frowns. I know we need to talk, but how. This is why I needed to do this on my terms. You would have let this drag out way past him being here. So, at least I would know what is what when we finally spoke again. Next year, Danielle? “Shut up!”
“Huh?” Erik snaps forward and looks at Dani. The look on her face says it all. “A penny for your thoughts?”
Dani starts picking at the fringe on the blanket and looks at Erik, “I’m not ready to have this talk.” Erik looks down, nodding his head. “It’s not that I don’t want to, but-“
“You don’t have to explain anything to me.” Erik raises his head to look at her. “I just wanted to see you before I leave tomorrow.”
“I thought you still had a few days.” Dani watches as Erik runs a hand over his braided dreads.
“Duty calls. Something came up that requires my immediate attention in Oakland.” He stands up. “I know we need to talk, and we will. Just call me whenever you’re ready.” Dani stands up and walks him to the door. “Raincheck on lunch?”
Dani leans into him as he hugs her goodbye, “Yeah.” Erik kisses the top of her head and leaves. She leans back against the door. All you had to say was three little words. "Oh, shut up!” She stomps off into the kitchen. Walking back into the living room, she finishes off the ice cream straight from the container, pouting the whole time.
— 3 weeks later —
Once Erik got back to Oakland and handled the emergency, he was thrown into project after project, keeping him super busy. It was both a good and bad thing. It didn’t give him time to dwell on the fact that Danielle has yet to reach out to him. Erik kept up communication with her, usually a good morning or just thinking of you text or phone call for the first week after he left L.A. He received a few responses but nothing consistent, so he decided to give her some real space and let her be. As much as it bothers him, that Erik has no idea where he stands with Dani, he gets it. He throws himself into his work so that he doesn’t have to think about it or how he feels.
Erik has been working in his office for the last few hours when there is a knock on his door. “Yeah, come in.”
“Aren’t you glad this building code mess is finally over?” His friend and coworker, Darrius, asks as he takes a seat on the couch in his office.
Erik sets a pen down on top of a pile of documents he was reviewing before signing. He looks over at Darrius, “You have no idea. I knew they didn’t want us expanding anymore, but we are outgrowing our current space.”
“So, let’s celebrate. Hit a bar and then a club, to clean all this work off.” Erik scoffs at him. “Oh, come on. You know what they say, man, ‘All work and no play…’”
Erik sees the expectant look on Darrius’ face, “Yeah, yeah, yeah.” He stands to stretch, “Fine, tomorrow night. We’ll hit the usual spot after work.”
Darrius jumps up, “YES!” Looking over at Erik, “I mean sure thing, Boss.” Erik waves him off, “Tomorrow night, don’t be late.”
Erik sits back down, glancing at his phone. Just email notifications, nothing of a personal nature. Any downtime he has had lately brings Danielle to the forefront as he rehashes the same conversation over and over. He knows exactly what he wants to say to her, but he only needs the chance to tell her. He left that ball in her court, so who knows when he will be able to get it all off his chest. Maybe he does need this break from both work and the reality of his feelings.
Dani has buried her feelings and just thrown herself into her work. She kept telling herself that she just needed the time to evaluate her feelings before having this talk with Erik. Dani spent the week after he left responding to some of his messages. Even answered a few phone calls, but she never let him stay on long or steer the conversation to something of a personal nature. It was always on some superficial level so that she maintained control of the situation.
It was just too soon for her to get over what she just had and then dwell on feelings that she thought were long gone only to have them resurface again. She has always loved Erik, but she knows she needs to figure out if it is just a platonic love or a romantic love. The best way to do that is not to think about it at all.
Dani and Rosio are having lunch at their favorite sandwich shop. Dani has purposely not said anything about Erik visiting her before he left. Drowning herself in work, this is the first time that they have been able to get away and just chat about life outside of work. It was Dani’s idea since she was finally sick of her homemade lunches. It is always a good idea to treat oneself, especially good food.
“So, how did the convo with bestie go?” Rosio asks before sipping her Coke.
“We haven’t had the talk yet. He did come over to see me the night that I told you I would call him.” Rosio sits forward waiting for the rest of the story. “I punked out.”
“WHAT?” She lowers her voice as her shout drew attention their way, “So, you haven’t talked since then? I know he went back to Oakland already.”
“Yeah, he’s gone.” Sipping her iced tea, Dani continues, “Not really, he’s been busy with work and –”
“And you are using that as an excuse not to engage him. You ain’t slick D.” Dani looks down and away from the intense stare Rosio is giving her. Rosio shakes her head as they stir their straws in silence for the next few minutes. She taps her nails on the table, getting Dani’s attention, “What are you doing this weekend?”
“Binge-watching the new season of Veronica Mars, why?” Dani looks confused by Rosio bouncing in her seat across from her.
“Not anymore, we are headed to the Bay.” She smiles at Dani as her face falls.
“What? No, I am not going to Oakland.” She shakes her head in the negative.
“I know where you live, and I can kidnap you. It’s nothing.”
“Girl, do you know how much a last-minute ticket is going to cost?” Dani flags down their waiter, “Can I get the check? And a refill to go on both of our drinks?” He nods and walks away.
“I know that,” Rosio responds rubbing her hands together, “ROAD TRIP!!!”
“Oh, hell no. I am not sitting in a car with you for 8 hours.”
“First of all, I can make that drive in 6. Thank you very much. But anyway, I need you packed and ready to go at 3pm tomorrow. We won’t take lunch and bounce early.” Dani is staring her down. Rosio cannot be serious right now. “Oh, and bring something cute to wear because we are going out.”
The waiter returns with the receipts and their refills. As they prepare to walk back to work, she thinks about what Rosio proposed — going up north, where Erik lives. Possibly running into him, maybe calling him so they can finally talk. Her chest starts pounding at the thought. She wants to see him, but not like this. What to do, what to do.
Before they enter the building, Dani pulls on Rosio’s arm to get her attention. “I’m in. I’ll be ready to go at 3 tomorrow.” Rosio links her arm with Dani’s as she dances them into the building.
“We are gonna have so much fun.”
Erik and Darrius are sitting at a table in their favorite bar/lounge, chatting it up over drinks. Darrius is looking over at Erik watching him swirl the contents of his glass. “Alright, who is she? And what did you do?”
“What?”
“You heard me.” Erik looks at him to continue. “You have not been yourself lately. We all see it, man.”
“See what? I’ve been working and making sure no one messes with the Outreach Centers.” Erik tosses back his drink.
“Right, and you really needed to oversee everything about all the upgrades and office moves at the Oakland location?” Darrius sips his drink. “Erik, you have people for that. So, what is really going on?”
“Nothing.” Erik reaches for the bottle and pours himself another drink.
"What you’re selling I’m not buying.” Pointing at him, “As a matter of fact, you haven’t gone on any center visits since you returned from L.A.” He ends the statement slowly, as it dawns on him. “Your best friend is out there, right? Shawty from middle and high school?”
Erik says nothing and looks down at his refreshed drink. “Yeah.”
“So, did you get her flowers again this year for your not a valentine Valentine?” Darrius laughs because only Erik would do some mess like that.
He nods, “I delivered them in person since I was down there.”
“Ok, so what happened?”
“I ran into her on her way to dinner with her boyfriend.” He takes a drink.
Darrius sighs, “Damn, sorry about that man. I know how you feel about her.”
Erik shrugs. “Then I took her out for the evening she wanted,” he smirks into his glass.
“Hold up! You run into her and her man, but you ended up taking her out and on Valentine’s Day, too?”
“Let’s just say they had other issues besides me. But I was probably the biggest one, and I found out how much that night.“ Erik puts his drink down remembering the look on Danielle’s face as she told her story, their story.
“Well, does she know how you feel about her?” Erik shakes his head no. “Why did you wait so long to tell her?”
“Nigga, you know my story.”
"Does she?” Erik nods in the affirmative. “Ok, so what’s the holdup?”
“I don’t think she feels the same. I broke her heart all those years ago. You should have seen the look on her face when she was telling her boyfriend the story.” Erik picks up the drink, rolling the glass between his fingers before taking a deep sip. “Man, I ain’t never felt bad for any decisions I have made in my life – until now.”
“Well, you thought you were protecting her in the long run. How were you supposed to know that things would work out the way they did?”
“True, but now that I can act on my feelings for her. I don’t know if I should anymore.” Darrius looks over at Erik.
“When was the last time you spoke with her?”
“A few days after I made it back. I told her we could talk when she was ready.” Erik takes a deep breath, “And I haven’t heard anything from her since.”
“Alright, I think you need to go look at some beautiful women and have some fun. Take your mind off all things Danielle-related. Enjoy the night, ya know?” Darrius lifts his drink to Erik.
"Yeah, ok.” Erik stands, and they finish their drinks. “Let’s head over to the other side and enjoy the scenery.”
Someone wanted Rosio and Dani to be out & about this weekend. Because they made it from L.A. to Oakland in 6 hours on a Friday afternoon. Riding smoothly along PCH, watching the water all along the coast, and playing the jams in both English and Spanish. This was going to be a time, Danielle could already tell.
Rosio pulls into their hotel in the center of the city. They were close to San Francisco if they decided to hit the Wharf before they left back home on Sunday. They stopped for food, and some snacks for the hotel before arriving. Dragging her bag behind her, Dani opens the door to their room and collapses on the bed closest to the bathroom.
“Aht, aht, aht…no nap for you. You slept enough for the both of us after that last gas stop.” Rosio pulls Dani up from the bed, “Now, take your big ass into the bathroom and get ready for tonight. I read about this laid back spot not too far from here.”
"Let’s go out tomorrow. Can’t we order room service and just chill for the night?” Dani lifts her bag onto the bed, half-ass looking for something to wear.
“Dani, you know I love my son, but I need to hang around some adults. We are not at home, and I am trying to be out living life.” Pulling out a cute dress from Dani’s bag and pushing her towards the bathroom. “Come on; we can chill tomorrow night.” Dani looks up at her with puppy dog eyes. “Nope, now get going. Or I will make you call Erik right now.”
Her face drops at Rosio’s comment. “Ugh fine. I’m going.” She grabs her toiletry bag, and underwear then walks into the bathroom.
Dani looks herself over in the full-length mirror on the closet door. She hears a low whistle come from the other side of the room. “Oh, look who finally decided to show up and show out?”
“Shut up!” She laughs as she continues to fix the tie on her navy wrap dress. “You don’t think it’s too much?” The dress is one piece of fabric that really does wrap around her curvy body, and she wants to make sure it holds together appropriately.
“Not at all. You are giving them just enough.” Rosio walks over in a simple form-fitting black dress. “What about your shoes?”
“I brought my go-to black wedges.” Rosio bobs her head in approval. Dani sits down to put them on. “Ok, so what is the plan?”
“We go out, drinking and dancing the night away.” Rosio shrugs at Dani.
“You know that is not what I meant.” She stands up, grabbing her clutch and room key.
“I know, and you don’t have to think about that tonight.” They link arms and head downstairs to wait for their Lyft. “Enjoy the moment, Danielle.”
They walk in and see that the bar side is set off the left and back while the dance floor is on the right towards the front. Both areas have some seats and tables. It was a lovely arrangement so patrons can decide on what they want to do and where. Rosio and Dani head over to one of the bars separating the bar area and club.
“One Jameson and Ginger and a Peach Ciroc with Cranberry, please.” Dani starts.
“No, Ciroc. Can I get an Adios, please?” The bartender nods at Rosio.
“You better sip that shit. I refuse to babysit you, Miss I Don’t Know How to Drink.” Dani looks over at Rosio.
“I’m good. I will pace myself. I promise.”
“Uh, huh.” Dani pays for the first round, and they move to a table next to the dance floor.
They sip, and people watch, checking out the women who are already hitting the dance floor. The DJ is currently playing R&B jams from the early 2000s that has Danielle moving in her seat. She figures the Top 40s stuff will come on a bit later as the club space fills up. They have finished their drinks and are just singing along to the songs from their seats. Rosio squeezes Dani’s arm when her song comes on trying to pull her on the floor.
Dani and Rosio get on the floor and start dancing and singing along to every song the DJ plays. Danielle finds herself relaxing and just having a fun time being out and about with her friend. She did need this to forget all that was troubling her about men and feelings.
Darrius and Erik are standing by the dance floor with new drinks in their hands when Darrius nudges him. Erik looks in the direction that Darrius nods towards. Dancing together on the floor are two women, one black and one latina. The latina has red hair and a black dress that is showing off her shapely figure. She is taller than her short and voluptuous friend in a navy dress that is tied in the front.
Her friend turns around while dancing to the song, and Erik nearly chokes on his drink. Darrius pats his back. “I know, right.” He takes a sip and looks over at Erik. “I’m calling dibs on red, so go have fun with her friend.” He winks at Erik and walks towards the floor.
Darrius and Erik reach Rosio and Danielle as the song changes, along with the mood on the dance floor. Erik moves in behind Dani as the smooth sounds of Mint Condition’s Pretty Brown Eyes begins to play through the speakers. Dani looks up at Rosio right as a brown-skinned brother walks up behind her to dance. They both nod their heads and smile in girl speak for 'you good, he’s cute/fine/whatever.’
Dani moves into his arms as he places his hands on her hips. Rosio and Darrius are dancing close by, but Rosio has turned around to face her dance partner. They all keep dancing through the song, and then Tevin Campbell’s Can We Talk came on. Dani starts laughing and is about to say something to Rosio when she notices them walking towards the bar. She is now left with the gentleman behind her as her thoughts drift to a different person other than the man behind her.
She shifts in his loose hold on her, but before she could turn around, he chuckles at her, “So, what brings you to Oakland, beautiful?” Dani freezes and slowly turns around, shocked to see Erik behind her. She steps back and almost falls, but Erik grabs her arm to catch her and pulls her into him. Danielle’s mouth keeps opening and closing, but nothing is coming out. Still holding her, Erik speaks, “Let’s go find your friend.”
He guides her with his hand on her lower back off the dance floor and to the bar where she snatches Rosio’s drink. “HEY!”
“I need it more than you.” Dani takes it to the head and grimaces afterward. “How can you drink this shit?” Rosio laughs at Dani, while Erik is standing off to the side.
Darrius looks over at Erik is who unusually quiet. “Rosio, this is my boy, Erik. Erik meet Rosio.” Erik shakes her hand before she pulls back and stares at Dani.
“Wait a minute.” She notices the flustered look on Dani’s face, “Oh shit, your Erik?” Dani keeps her head down but nods at Rosio. “Let me get you another shot then.”
Darrius looks at Erik, who just keeps looking at Dani. "Nigga, give her her face back.”
Erik snaps out of his trance, “My bad, Dani girl.” Darrius makes the connection and watches his gaze as Rosio regards Dani.
Both sighing, “You two need to talk.” They say at the same time to Dani and Erik. They both laugh as the other two just look at one another.
“Any good restaurants around here?” Rosio directs her question to Darrius.
“There are plenty of good places in the city center.” He responds.
“What kind of food?”
“Excuse me?” Dani tries to get a word in, and they ignore her and continue. Erik keeps observing Dani as she lightly bounces on her feet and wrings her hands under his watchful eye. She looks away after their friends ignore her, trying not to peek at him.
“Thai, Cambodian, Japanese…take your pick.” Darrius continues his conversation with Rosio.
She bobs her head up and down, “That’s good for dinner.”
“Dinner, shouldn’t they do lunch or something?” He watches the two of them trying not to look at one another.
“Nah, she needs time to get her mind right before they meet again.” Rosio follows his eyesight, waving towards them.
“Done.”
"Say goodnight, Dani.” Dani waves to the two men as Rosio pulls her away. "See you tomorrow, Bestie.” They leave and head back to their hotel.
“What the hell did you just do?” Erik snaps after they leave.
“Help you.” He slaps him on the back. “Let’s go. You have a talk to prepare for whether you are ready or not.”
Danielle flops onto the bed as they get back to their room. Groaning and runs her hands over her face, “I can’t do this.”
Rosio bounces onto the bed next to her. “I know you are not ready, but I know you know this needs to happen. And sooner rather than later.” She lifts Dani up to look at her. “Does Bestie like you?”
"What?” She scoffs, “Nah, we’ve been friends for too long. He’s never looked at me like that.” Her eyes close, remembering the last time they talked about feelings.
“Yeah, I don’t think that’s the case anymore.” Confused and questioning eyes look at Rosio. “That man did not say one word, Dani. He just kept looking at you. There was this look like he had something to say.”
“Stop it, Rosio.” Shaking her head, “It’s bad enough that I am going to have to admit that I still love him.” She takes off her wedges and pulls her legs under her. “He was surprised to see me. That’s all.”
“Did he say anything to you while you were dancing?”
“So, what brings you to Oakland, beautiful?” She smiles as she thinks about hearing him say that directly into her ear. “It was funny because of the song playing, and I was already thinking about him, then I hear his voice and thought I was tripping.”
“You hadn’t seen him yet?”
Dani shakes her head, “No, I was getting ready to say something to you, and you were walking off with his friend. So, I was turning to face him, and before I could move, he asked that question.”
Rosio nods, “Ok. Let’s get some rest because you have a big day tomorrow.” Dani has her head down. She grabs Dani’s hands, “You got this mamas. Everything will work out.”
“And I won’t lose my best friend?” she softly asks. Rosio hugs her.
Completing their weekly ritual, the guys played in their weekend pick-up game before they headed to the barbershop. Darrius went first and is chilling across from Erik. He is sitting in the barber’s chair getting a fresh line up and his beard trimmed. Darrius decides to ask a question that has been on his mind since last night.
“That’s why you choked on your drink last night?” Erik looks at him, confused. “You knew it was her. When shawty turned around on the dance floor, you saw her.”
Nodding, “Yeah, I was already gonna dance with her anyway. You know that I have a type.” The barber moves his head to the left, but he continues speaking, “But when she turned around, I wasn’t expecting to see Dani.” He closes his eyes as he remembers the blue dress she wore last night and how amazing she looked in it. Forgetting where he is for a moment, he groans out at the memory.
“You are so gone.”
“Man, shut up.”
“Did you say anything to her before you found us?”
“I asked her what brought her to Oakland. That’s when she figured out who I was, she turned around and almost fell back when she looked up at me.”
“My nigga, got women falling at his feet.” They both laugh. “So, I take it she was shocked and ran off or what?”
"She was shocked, but she was trying to speak, and nothing came out. So, I told her we could find her friend, and she let me lead her over to the both of you.”
Darrius shakes his head, “Boy, you was stuck.” He laughs, “I don’t think I have ever seen big bad Erik Stevens have nothing to say with a fine woman in front of him.”
“It’s not just any woman, and you know that.” The barber lifts the cape and brushes any loose hair off of him. “I have no idea how tonight is gonna go.” Erik pays the man, and they leave the shop. “She could tell me that she is still with her dude, and I will have to keep all my feelings locked up again.”
“She’s single.” Erik looks over at him, “What? Her girl was sharing some info before you two barged up to us and ruined the conversation.”
“And?”
“And her girl, Rosio, said that they are both single and just in town to get away from all the stress going on in their everyday life.”
“We caught them on a girl’s night out?” Darrius nods and Erik lets out a brash laugh.
“Now, can you handle things from here?” Darrius looks at Erik as he opens the driver’s side of his car.
“I’m not trying to rush her into anything, but at least I can tell her how I feel. What she does with that information is up to her.” Erik gets into the passenger side.
“My man.” They dap it up before Darrius takes off.
For the second night in a row, Danielle is questioning her outfit. Looking back at her, she twists and turns, looking at how the empire waist dress flares out from her hips. It is a deep purple with a sweetheart neckline and long sleeves. Her favorite pair of peep-toe black booties showing off her coral-colored pedicure. She runs her hair over her flat twists crowning her head and then through her curls. She separates a few more pieces and fluffs them out a bit more. She looks over at Rosio.
“So, you are trying to kill the man; I thought you wanted to keep your bestie?” Rosio chuckles from her seat on her bed. Dani rolls her eyes at Rosio before looking back to her reflection and smiling.
“It’s not a date.” Dani looks at Rosio through the mirror, “I mean, I am just having dinner with a friend.”
“If that’s what gets you out the door and to this restaurant, then yeah.” Rosio raises her hands as if she gives up.
“Rosio!”
“What? We went over this at the nail salon.” She motions to Dani’s bed, and Dani goes to sit down. “There is nothing else to say. At least, not to me.”
“Why was this an easier decision to make when I was younger?”
“You had never been hurt before. Young love is sweet and innocent, yada yada yada.” Rosio waves her hand, “You are a grown woman who is about to let your grown-ass best friend know that your teenage crush has morphed into something bigger.“ Dani pouts at her. "I know because I had to drag your ass to Oakland.”
Dani’s phone goes off, and she looks over to see her reminder to call Erik. She dismisses it, “Guess I don’t have to do that anymore.”
“Alright, did you text him the name of the place?”
“Oh shit!” She scrambles for her phone.
“Danielle! Are you serious right now?” Rosio watches her unlock the phone.
“No, I forgot to respond to the last text he sent.” She starts laughing at Dani.
“Why is that a problem?”
“It’s rude.” Rosio snatches the phone from her, “Give it back.” She types something into the phone and throws it back to her.
“Get up; your ride is on the way.”
They decided on a Japanese bar and restaurant for their ‘date.’ Danielle arrives first and takes a seat at the bar while waiting for Erik to arrive. She looks around at the quiet atmosphere. It is a beautiful place, and thankfully, she doesn’t feel overdressed. The bartender walks over to her and takes her drink order.
“Here is your Jameson straight up.” She smiles at him and picks it up. A cough from behind her stops her from taking a drink.
“The lady does drink whiskey.” She turns around to see Erik standing there, smirking at her. Dani lifts her drink and takes a sip.
“That she does.”
“I’ll take Crown neat, please.” He sits on the stool next to her. Whispering in her ear, “You look amazing tonight.” Kissing her forehead, “Our table isn’t ready yet.”
“Oh ok.” She takes another sip of her drink and tries to sneak peeks at Erik’s attire. From what she can tell, he has on a navy suit with a black shirt and black driving loafers. The bartender places his drink in front of him.
Erik pays for the drinks, putting his wallet away, “I can stand if you want a better look.” He winks at Dani as he takes a sip.
Dani fully turns in her stool to respond when a waiter approaches. “Stevens, party of two? Your table is ready.”
“Thank you.” Erik stands and helps Dani off her stool. They follow the waiter to the table.
The waiter stands beside their table as Erik pulls out Dani’s chair and then takes his seat. She tells them the specials of the night and their most popular sakes. Erik lets Dani chose what they will be drinking.
Over assorted sashimi, sushi rolls and sake, the conversation was kept to work and weather. Nothing too deep, all surface level. It was getting harder to do as they were running out of things to talk about to avoid the real conversation.
“Danielle, you know we can’t keep running around this anymore.” Erik makes the first move. He takes a drink of his refreshed Crown. “If you don’t want to speak, that’s fine. But I have something I need to say and in-person is best.” Dani looks down and away.
“I know, I know.” Wringing the napkin in her hands, “There is something that I need to say as well.” Erik signals for her to continue. “No, no, no. You can start.”
"Are you sure?” She looks up and nods, and he notices the look of discomfort on her face. Erik signals their waiter, “Do you have any ginger ale?”
“Yes, we do.”
“Can you get her some, no ice, thank you?” He looks at Dani, starts laughing and shaking his head.
“What’s so funny? And why did you order me ginger ale?”
“Is the thought of talking to me that bad?” She gives him a funny look. He reaches over with another napkin to wipe the sweat off her forehead. “Take some deep breaths for me, ok.”
Danielle closes her eyes, inhaling deeply through her nose and out through her mouth a few times. When she looks up again, Erik has the ginger ale in front of him and passes it to her.
“That should settle your stomach a bit.”
“How did-“ Dani shyly smiles at him, “Thank you.” She reaches for the glass and slowly sips from it.
They sit quietly for a few minutes until he notices her beautiful chocolate brown skin return to its healthy glow. “Do you still want me to start us off?”
Danielle takes a deep breath and sets the glass back down, “No, I think I should start.” He bows towards her. “First things first, Shaun and I are done.” Erik keeps his face neutral and takes a sip of his drink to keep from fist-bumping the air. “He didn’t want to stay with me only for me to leave him for the person who has my heart.”
Erik nearly chokes, coughing roughly at the last part of her statement. “I see.”
"It was amicable. I understood where Shaun was coming from and I had been feeling indifferent about us anyway.” She shrugs before continuing, “I will admit, you showing up that night did not make things any better. Especially since you know how I feel about V-Day, but I cannot say that I am not happy that you came through. It ended a relationship I settled for, and I actually enjoyed my night out with you.” She smiles up at him as he lifts in drink in salute to her.
“You know me; I never do anything the 'traditional’ way. So, I guess you’re welcome.” Dani laughs at him but tips her drink towards him in return. “As long as you’re happy, that’s all that matters to me.”
“I know which is why this talk is long overdue.” She stops to take a deep calming breath, “I never stopped caring about you, Erik. In fact, I am finally ready to admit that my love for you has continued to grow over the years, and it never went away.“ He looks up at her, and she briefly closes her eyes. "Even though you truly broke my heart when we were teenagers that never changed the way I felt about you. When you disappeared, I buried myself in schoolwork and extra-curriculars so that I wouldn’t have to think about you leaving without saying goodbye.” She feels his hands grab hers. “When you sent the first bouquet of live black and dead red roses after I graduated from college, I could not stop laughing and crying tears of joy.” She rubs her thumbs on the backs of his hands while looking at him. “I had you back, and at that moment, I told myself that if that was all I got of you and our friendship, I could live with that.”
Erik wipes the tears from her eyes, “What changed?”
“What do you mean?” She tries to pull away, and Erik moves his chair right next to hers.
“Danielle.” She turns her head away, “Look at me.” He dabs at her closed eyes again. “Please.” She opens her eyes and looks at him. “Something must have changed for us to be in this position now. I know what it is on my end, but what about yours?”
“You showed up.” Erik somberly shakes his head. “As long as you were not tangible, I could just be and live my life. Yeah, we video chat and talk on the phone whenever time permits, but it wasn’t like we visit one another…even though we are in the same state.” She reaches for the ginger ale and takes a long swallow.
“Out of sight, out of mind.” He speaks low, but she hears him.
“Exactly.” She sets the drink down, “And when you showed up on Valentine’s Day of all days, it was just too much for me.“ She laughs, "If only you knew what I did just to get up the nerve to attend those dinners with Shaun and his family. I felt like it was my penance for hating a made-up holiday, falling for a guy who loved everything about it.”
“So, where does that leave the guy that you love?” He gulps, “The one who has your heart?” He looks down at the table.
“Erik Stevens, look at me.“ She pulls his chin up, so they are eye-to-eye. "It is you. It has always been you.” She runs her hand down the side of his face. “And even if you don’t return it, it is time that you knew that.” He smiles into her hand.
“But I do.” She blinks rapidly at that. He grabs her hands to keep them on his face, “I love you, Danielle George.” Smoothing his hands over hers, “And if I’m being truly honest, I always have.”
Dani finally pulls away, “You don’t have to do this, Erik.”
“Do what, Dani? Tell you the truth.” He can see her closing herself off to him, “Danielle, don’t do that. Not to me.”
She looks up at him and the look of despair on his face, “You’re serious?”
“Dani girl, I joke around a lot but when have I ever said something I didn’t mean?” Dani observes him quietly.
“Fifteen years ago.”
“What?” Erik is perplexed, and Dani’s straight face has him searching his memories.
“When you looked me in the face and told me that you did not return my feelings.” Erik looks at her smiling back at him.
“It’s like that Dani girl?”
“Of course.”
Raising his hand to their waiter, “Check, please.” Erik mumbles something about this being the worst date ever.
“This was not a date, E.” Dani finishes up her ginger ale. “It was just two friends having dinner together.” She grins at him.
Erik pays the bill and stands. “Well, then I guess a friend can find her way back to her hotel.”
Dani stands up and stomps right up to him, “You giving up that easily, Stevens?”
“Give up what?” He shrugs as they walk to the front of the restaurant. “Friends go their separate ways after dinner. But you know my girl would be coming back to my place for movies and ice cream.”
Dani smacks him with her clutch, “You really gonna deny me some ice cream? Me?”
“And who are you? Friends have to be invited over.” They are at his car, in front of the passenger side door.
“I am your friend who happens to be a girl.” She huffs at him, “So, let’s go.”
He opens the door for her, “You better be glad I like your lil short ass.”
She gets in and holding the car door handle, “Nah, you love my lil short ass.” She sticks her tongue out and closes the door.
Erik grabs her hand on the ride back to his place, interlacing their fingers together. Dani has the biggest smile plastered on her face, and he is happy to know that once again, he did that.
He unlocks the door and lets her in. Dani takes in the look of his bachelor pad. He has a lot of African art and sculptures around along with his dark color scheme. Erik takes his jacket off and disappears into his bedroom. When he returns, he has changed into a gray tank top and some shorts. In his hands, he has a shirt and some sweats for Dani.
“Go get changed and I will get the ice cream.” She skips over to him and grabs the clothes from him.
Reaching up to kiss him on the cheek. “Thanks, E.”
When Dani returns, Erik groans lowly from the couch as she comes around. Even swallowed up in his clothes, he can still make out the silhouette of her curves. He picks up his bowl of vanilla and scoops some into his mouth before he makes any more noise. He uses his foot to point to her bowl.
Dani plops herself down next to him on the couch and leans over to grab her bowl. She laughs as she sees nothing but strawberry and chocolate in her bowl. Shaking her head at the man next to her, “So, what are we watching?”
Erik swallows his bite, “Texas Chainsaw Massacre since you fell asleep on it last time.” She nods and digs into her ice cream.
Halfway through the movie, Dani moves over so that her head is in his lap. He runs his hands through her curls, rubbing her scalp. She purrs at that and Erik briefly stops to control himself. She moves her hand over his to get him going again.
By the end of the movie, Dani and Erik are laid out on the couch. She is in front of him and has been nodding off for the last 20 minutes. She turns into his arms, and he holds her by the waist as she reaches up to pull him in for a kiss. They both smile into the kiss and Erik pulls back to give her a few pecks.
“Go to sleep.” He squeezes her waist, “We’ll have plenty of time for more.” She kisses him again and turns back around, wrapping her arms around his.
“Goodnight, Erik.”
He pulls a blanket over the two of them, “Goodnight.” He kisses her forehead. “I love you, Dani girl.”

Some AUs that I Love
Okay so I made a giant list of AUs, prompts, and other things that I love so that you guys could reblog/request/get inspiration from them! I know some are really similar, but honestly that just means I really love that trope! Please feel free to reblog these and use them for your own purposes! I’ll update this list as time goes on, I’m sure, as I’ve had a running list for a long time that was just on my phone. I also don’t own any of these (besides 152 and 196).
it’s 3 am and I’m still in the library studying for finals and I’m losing my grip on reality and I think I just saw a ghost
I thought I was the only one who liked the waffle station in the cafeteria
it’s 3am, in the dead of winter, some motherfucker pulled/set off the fire alarm and I am being very vocal about how I’m gonna make that fucker pay
The guy with the bibles on the quad has cornered me and is screaming about hell, please rescue me
You’re the only one who actually responded to the desperate message I sent to the whole class about needing the notes
'i ordered a pumpkin spice latte at starbucks and you made a heart with the foam and i decided to drink it here so i can smile at you some more’ au
you walked here in a blizzard to get your hot chocolate but you forgot your wallet at home, here, let me buy your drink for you
we’re at the mall when there’s a severe weather warning over the loudspeakers, guess we’re spending the night here
“I work at a department store and if you take out and unfold a shirt and then leave it one more time I’m going to stuff it down your throat” AU
“You saw me reading the same book you did and we got into a heated discussion on how much it sucks” AU
“You have just witnessed me cry over the ending to my favorite game before class began please don’t ever tell anyone about this.”
“I’ve never talked to you before but the teacher just used us as an example for a scenario where we are married.”
“I’m exhausted, feverish, and hacking up a lung, and the student health center’s first suggestion was pregnancy, can you help me get to the ER in town” AU
“I know that this probably isn’t a good idea but it’s included in the meal plan and I’m stressed out, so I keep hitting the ice cream sundae bar in the buffet style dining hall at least a couple times a week” AU
bonding solely via eye contact over that annoying person on our plane that we’re both slowly becoming more and more exasperated about au
you fell asleep and i started making funny faces at your kid to keep them amused and the steward mistook us for a couple au
actually, any mistaken for a couple au
having to SHARE A LIVING SPACE FOR ARBITRARY FIC REASONS. having to see each other in their pajamas first thing in the morning, messy haired, drowsy eyed and soft faced. going from “you can have the bathroom first” to brushing their teeth beside each other and feeling like this closeness has always existed (at the same time, painfully aware that it won’t always).
bed sharing. :^) we all pretend we’re bigger than this but we are not.
'room mate has a nightmare and doesn’t want to sit alone at night’ au
'room mate gets sick and needs tissues and cough sweets and soup’ au

You and I ride the same bus home every day but never talk but then you fell asleep and sorry to wake you up (you look really cute in your sleep) but it’s your stop next
it’s exam week and i run a coffee shop near the campus and you walked right into my glass door i’m laughing so hard oh my god

(cont.) “you look so sad and cold that i just tell you to keep my hoodie b/c you obviously need it more than i do. a week later i see you at a coffee shop/book store/etc. and you’re wearing my hoodie which you look so fucking tiny and cute in, and you just saw me and you look super embarrassed; you offer me it back but i tell you it suits you more and we end up talking and i buy you a drink” au
i tried to call a crisis hotline but got one number off and started ranting for 10 minutes before you got to speak and tell me i got the wrong number but now you’re worried about me and telling me not to hang up
Character A has been working at a retail store during the night/early morning of Black Friday and is so tired, but they need to stay awake so that they can drive home. Character A stops at Character B’s small coffee shop—which opened early in case people came in at 4am—and Character A accidentally falls asleep in a very comfortable chair while waiting on their coffee. Character B lets them sleep and even gets a blanket out of the back room to cover Character A
You’ve been missing for 5 months and suddenly you turn up at my doorstep with a huge scar across your face, looking more grim than when you left and won’t talk about what happened.
You usually only order hot chocolate and yet today you’re ordering something with six shots of espresso, are you okay??? Are you gonna die???
I just took a super dangerous job and you’re trying to talk me out of it, but we really need the money
You always bring your dates here to the restaurant I wait at and now you’re here alone…you okay mate?
We are trapped in a bank during a robbery
I saw you sleeping on the couch in the lounge in the morning, but now it’s like 5 pm and you’re still here. Are you okay?
I don’t know how we ended up having to sit next to each other on a roller coaster ride—sorry I fell against you  and grabbed your hand a couple times
“You’re so small”
“I can’t breathe”
“Fight me”
“Whose head do I have to rip off?”
“Don’t you ever fucking touch them again”
Found the other in an alleyway under the influence of drugs/alcohol and brought them home
“Why am I your emergency contact?”
“Wait, you actually stayed the night?”
“If he’s going to treat you like shit, I’m gong to kick his ass.”
“I just want to cuddle and watch friends.
“I want my best friend back”
“If I ever see you anywhere near her, you’ll have to deal with me!”
“Fuck…I feel like I’ve been hit by a car”
“Who gave you that black eye?!”
“Are you drunk?”
“You got her pregnant?! What were you thinking?”
“It’s a hobby of mine to prove you wrong.”
“We should get you to a hospital.”
I’m on a terrible date and you’re my waiter please help me
just a game? jUST A GAME????? FUCK YOU I WILL DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO WIN
“Please don’t touch me”
“Does he know about the baby?”
“Don’t fucking touch me!”
“Game’s over son of a bitch! Tell me where she is!”
“Look at me—just breathe, okay?”
“Shit, are you bleeding?”
“You haven’t touched your food. What’s going on?”
“You can’t die. Please don’t die.”
“That guy at the bar keeps staring at you.”
“You’re safe now. I’ve got you.”
“Do you want to stay over tonight?”
“Every guy you date is a total jerk and I have to watch you get heartbroken over and over again because you can’t see that I love you!”
We were snuggling in our underwear when my roommate came home early from vacation now you have to try and sneak down the fire     escape while I distract them with really terrible small talk
I don’t really know you but I noticed that this creep has been trying to chat you up even though you’ve already turned him down, so I’ll pretend to be your boyfriend/girlfriend until they leave you alone
It’s 2 am, we’re standing outside of our apartment building because someone pulled the fire alarm, and you look cold and unprepared, do you want to share my blanket?
We share a class at university and you forgot your notebook under your desk but luckily your phone number’s written inside PS: your doodles are pretty cool
I got stood up on a date and you were just grabbing dinner—shit my ex is here, sit down and pretend to laugh at something I said attractive stranger
Our flats are opposite each other and your kitchen window faces my kitchen so we always see each other making coffee at 3am.
Imagine you’ve been stood up by your douche of a boyfriend on date night and the waitress keeps asking if you’re ready to order but you keep asking for more time hoping that he’s just late. People are starting to look at you with those apologetic looks like they now and you start to feel worse and worse about the whole situation but as you decide to just get up and leave, this boy you’ve never seen sits down explaining loudly “Sorry, I’m so late, traffic is crazy right now.” He quietly adds “I’m [name]. Just go with it, yeah? Whoever didn’t bother to show up is a dick.” And so you go with it because he’s sweet and trying to save you (and plus he’s the cutest thing you’ve ever seen) and as you’re leaving the restaurant after the best non-planned date ever, he asks you out for real this time.
I’ve been texting my friend for about a week now and they don’t reply but turns out I was texting a random person and there was some deep personal stuff I sent oh my god why are they calling me now (+bonus if the person calls at 2am)
“Look I don’t mean to pry but you’ve been wearing the same outfit for three days and I just want to check that you’ve slept?” “Okay obviously not because you just passed out in the hallway holy shit what do I do?”
You’re the bartender and you catch someone slipping something into my drink
You’re the perpetual frowner in class and one day as I’m answering the teacher I intentionally make a very cheesy pun and I can hear crickets but you’re laughing out loud and that makes me feel very much accomplished
I come to this café pretty much every day after work and by now you know my order by heart and even wave at me when I come in
I brought you to my friend’s wedding as my plus one and it was really fun and all but now it’s the end of the night and we’re sitting alone together at the reception and all these twinkle lights and flowers everywhere are causing a hell of a lot of romantic tension between us and ohhhhhhhhh
We were the only two to show up to class because it was cancelled but stay inside to finish work and ‘Hey, are you good at math?’
You’re my neighbor who got drunk and thought this was your apartment but I can’t just send you back home when you keep crying and venting about all of these awful things happening to you
I’m always terrified no matter how many times someone draws my blood. And even though you don’t need to be there when the guy comes     in to take it you always stay with me and talk to me to calm me down and     hold my hand
There’s this creepy person asking me out over text and could you pretend to be my significant other?
“How much did you drink?”
I’m a little drunk and I tried to call my ex back and I typed in your number and you had to hear a long emotional rant ohmygod I’m mortified but you left me a really sweet voicemail aw
The coffee machine stopped working and you’re cramming for finals please don’t cry
I accidentally gave you the wrong dosage of your medication and now we’d better get to the hospital before you pass out and possibly die
Lady and the Tramp AU
“The manager says the only reason the restaurant where we work at is popular is because people enjoy eating while watching our relentless flirting with each other but I swear to God we’re not flirting???”
“It’s Valentine’s Day and I’m single and you want to cheer me up but you can’t cook nor bake to save your life so you make me hot chocolate instead and it is delicious and I think I love you???” AU.
We bump into each other every Friday at the supermarket to buy the same ice cream and maybe we should eat it together?
“You’re the jerk-face customer that keeps on thumbing through their phone while ordering their drink so I exact revenge by spelling your name wrong on your cup and drawing phallic pictures on your coffee”
You’re my roommate who’s super cute and you’re cramming for your exams in your flannel pajamas and disheveled hair and it’s becoming     increasingly hard for me not to kiss you.
"We work together and I stayed after a couple minutes and I saw you on the intercom pretending you were at the Hollywood Bowl with Beyoncé and not to be weird but you're adorable ??"
“It’s our mutual friend’s wedding and they keep shoving us into each other because we’re the only ones at the ceremony who are single”
“I’m sick so you make me chicken soup and I’m really grateful but I’ve also seen you read books on magical spells and potion-making so I’m not sure if I should drink your soup in case it turns me into a toad”
“I’m a perpetual frowner and most certainly not a morning person and I work part-time at a breakfast bar and your disheveled hair and content smile as you eat my waffles and scrambled eggs is the only thing that can get me to smile”
“You’re the health-conscious med student and I’m the chain-smoking art student who’s also your barista and you leave me notes on smoking and lung health on your napkins and also a 20-page essay on lung cancer tucked under your saucer” AU.
“I’m egging a random person’s house to relieve stress and you join me and as it turns out the house belongs to your ex and now they are chasing us as well as the police and now we’re both in jail waiting to be bailed so um you wanna talk about it?”
“I’m a fashion major and I’m working on my illustrations and maybe I’ve had too much coffee but I swear I just saw one of the mannequins move so here I am calling you in the middle of the night please help I’m scared” AU.
“I lied and said I could speak a different language to impress my crush but now he wants me to tutor him so I need to become fluent in Mandarin in 3 days HELP”
“I’m taking this Literature class to fill a Gen Ed, and for the love of God I can’t figure out this dumb poem. Here, you’re an English Major, please help me write this stupid paper” au
“I hope one day you’re as happy as you’re pretending to be”
“I think I picked up your coffee by mistake”
“I want my best friend back”
“I’ll be right over”
“I’m so stupid to make the mistake of falling in love with my best friend.”
“Is there a special reason why you’re wearing my shirt?”
“It’s okay to cry”
“Look at me--just breathe okay?”
“She’s been missing since Friday and you’re not worried?”
“We have to pretend that we’re married.”
“Why can’t they see that they’re meant for each other?”
“You did all this for me?”
“You’re safe now. I’ve got you.”
“You’ve only heard his side of the story. You never asked mine.”
While closing up Character A finds that they’re completely snowed in and the roads are blocked. Character B--another employee/a regular that stayed late--gets out two mugs and offers to make Character A a cup of hot cocoa while they wait for the snow to clear.
“how much did you drink?”
“You deserve better. It doesn’t have to be me, but you deserve better.”
“Please just hold my hand, that person’s basically undressing me with their eyes.”
Teacher from one department falls in love with teacher from another department AU
You found me singing a sad song on the fire escape a floor below you and you came down to ask me if something was wrong and I broke down and told you everything while you awkwardly sat there patting my head while I wept into your shoulder.
We sit across from each other on the train/tube everyday and I’m not sure how but we’ve ended up with this weird, silent, almost-friendship where we share “wtf” looks when we see another passenger doing something weird or telling a bizarre story and a few times I’ve almost gotten you to break and laugh out loud, but today you’re sitting with someone and I think they must be your partner because they are really in your space, but you shoot me a silent look that clearly screams ‘get this creep away from me’ and I’m all for that. AU
It’s the middle of winter and my heater went out and you let me stay at your place so I don’t freeze to death. God bless you.
Why are you crying in the hallway?? Are you okay?? Let’s go to my place, I have ice cream and Netflix.
I work in the library and I’m a little concerned for your health bc you never stop studying.
I’ve been standing in line at the coffee shop for hours and you casually cut through for your drink but also buy me my favorite blend and now I’m not so sure what to make of you AU
“I don’t get sick”
“It’s not fun anymore, I’m dizzy...”
“We need to get this fever down”
“If you don’t stop soon, we’re going to the ER.”
You didn’t get a blanket on this flight so I figured we could share mine. You look cold okay? NO I AM NOT BLUSHING
You walked into the student lounge on our dorm floor and saw me cry-studying and walked out and now you’re back with coffee and a bag of chips and I’m seriously debating proposing to you with my ring pop
I kept getting harassed by some creepy person as I was trying to study and they’re not picking up on my ‘fuck off’ vibes and I started to actually get scared and then you put a coffee in front of my face and called me babe and scared them away thank you please let me buy you a new one on me oh you have a really cute smile when you’re shy
So I heard you get into this huge fight with someone and I know we’ve only exchanged genial smiles but I just wanted to check that you’re okay AU
You’re my adorably shy and awkward assistant who cares way too much about my love life and at a dance party you tell me to dance with the most attractive person in the room last so you can set up a date with them for me and when everyone’s gone I ask you to dance with me because you’re the prettiest person here to me duh AU
Your girlfriend decided to kick you out at 3 AM and I tripped over your boxes of shit in the hallways in my drunken trip to my apartment now I’m half passed out in a pile of your clothes AU
You asked who I had a crush on and so I described you to a tee but apparently you’re the most oblivious person in the world because you got kinda sad and nodded and HOW DO YOU NOT GET THIS AU
So your TV is facing the window and you’ve been watching Say Yes to the Dress for three days straight I just want to make sure you’re okay AU
You don’t eat nearly enough food and so I’ve gotten in the habit of making you lunches and bringing you deserts to make sure you don’t starve
My cereal is always on the bottom shelf but today they changed the layout so it’s on the top and I can’t reach it AND I WILL NOT ACCEPT YOUR HELP YOU GIANT AU
You are stupidly tall and you sit in front of me in class and I can’t see anything so I despise you with all of my soul AU
You are fiery and outspoken but you are so short that nobody pays any mind and I am so tall and have a huge crush on you so I just sort of follow you around making people listen to you AU
Person A getting startled by the New Years fireworks--not being fond of loud noises. Person B pulls them in for a deep kiss, completely distracting them from the exploding lights filling up the night sky
I was really drunk and you walked me safely back to my dorm room
My roommate brought you back to our apartment because apparently you got really drunk last night and needed someone to keep you safe and now you’re hungover and making pancakes and wow you’re cuTE
My ex runs one of the rides and I want to RUB IT IN THEIR FACE hold my hand and by the way when the camera takes a pic imma lean over and kiss you okay AU

Fic Writers Week Day 7: Rec Time!
Yay! This is the day I was looking forward to the most honestly, I love spreading the love for fics I read! Please also check out a few underrated recs I did for day 2 here! For this post I’m mostly going to be listing all time favorites, as well as the fics I’m currently subscribed to (in no particular order)! I imagine this post will get freakishly long, so as always, it’s going under a read more.
This week was amazing, it’s so lovely to see all the enthusiasm and support for fic writers <3 I hope this trend can continue way past this week as well ^^
Please also refer to my bookmarks! Everything I have bookmarked is quality and surely won’t let you down, but I could not include every single one on this list (it ended up being too long as is lol) but I definitely encourage you to give them all a read!
Alright, let’s talk about some fics!
Ride or Die (Iwaoi, E)
For an esteemed racer, intended for the big leagues, owning a garage and racing on the streets should have felt like settling rather than a dream. But Oikawa Tooru is as happy as he can be, as long as he's behind the wheel of a car; until a misstep lands him a heavy fine, and a crumbling future.
Having grown up in one of the roughest neighbourhoods in Tokyo, Iwaizumi Hajime is no stranger to the mob life. But establishing himself as a separate entity has always been his goal. He's a man of action, someone who does what he's asked without any questions. But when the people he's tried so hard to distance himself from come knocking at his front door, he realizes that he finally has to establish a side: his own.
Iwaizumi wants Oikawa's expertise: someone who can both drive well and knows his way around cars. And Oikawa wants absolutely nothing to do with gangs, the kind of people that lit a fire to his life. Everything changes when two people who live very different lives realize they're both fighting for the same thing.
Alright, so I’ve been following this fic since chapter one, and ahh @oiivkawa does such an amazing job with it! It’s the fast and furious AU that the fandom needed tbh, each chapter has me on the edge of my seat. The drama, romance, and fun are all evenly balanced and I can’t get enough of iwaoi’s dynamic in it! It also has the hints of an OiKuroo friendship that I love, as well as some kurotsuki thrown in, not to mention Semi even has a role?!! It’s everything I’ve ever wanted, so please go check it out!
galaxies, within you (Iwaoi, T)
Hajime and Tooru move in together at the start of university. Too bad they’re stuck with the two gremlins that haunt their apartment.
I read this fic just this week, so all the beautiful emotions and details are still so fresh in my head ; ; The writing in this was so gorgeous, as were the characterizations! If you love pining and happy endings, this is for you! Oh, and also funny af Matsukawa and Hanamaki shenanigans lol. The emotion and the humor compliment each other so well in this fic, one minute my heart was aching, and the next I was dying from laughter. It’s just a lovely iwaoi fic all around, so please give it a read! And make sure to follow @skiecas <3
Wicked Games (Kurotsuki, Iwaoi, Bokuaka, E)
After years of being one of the many faceless foot soldiers in the ranks, Bokuto gets a much-deserved promotion. But with the new job comes great responsibility. The job is easy enough. All Bokuto has to do is look after the Boss's mate: The Boss's beautiful, intriguing mate.
Tbh if you like hardcore mafia aus, then this is the fic for you. @caelestisxyz is like...a master storyteller, her plots are so well developed and original, idk how she does it! Every chapter is also packed full of romance and nail biting drama, so it’s not for the faint of heart, but if you’re not scared of the angst which comes with this kind of au, then I would seriously recommend it. It’s incredible and features all my fav pairings in such a badass setting!
A Place to Call Home (Iwaoi, Bokuaka, E)
Oikawa Tooru doesn't need an alpha. He's doing fine all on his own. And the past four years of being a single mother have proven that this is exactly what he wanted from life.
Of course, life has a way of not always going as planned.
This is another fic I’m currently subscribed to! I will admit I don’t usually read kidfics, but @madamemalfoy21 has such cute plots and stellar characterizations that I can’t resist her works! Everything about this fic is heartwarming, and every update brings a smile to my face. Oikawa as a single parent trying to figure out how to love again is such a treat to explore, and with the other pairings thrown in, it makes the fic such a pleasure to read <3
Let it Linger (Kurotsuki, T)
Kei has loved Tetsurou for years.
Tetsurou has loved Keiji for years.
Keiji is marrying Koutarou.
Alright, hold the phone y’all, this fic right here is extraordinary. It’s one of my favorites I’ve ever read, omg, the character growth and reflection is so powerful in this fic AND the slow burn is wonderful. I usually avoid angst like the plague but I can’t really resist @rhealmobsidi and her works, I’ve been reading her stuff since I was but a smol lmao and she never disappoints. This fic right here is so heart-aching and heart warming at the same time, I can’t get enough. Please read it if you have not!
cookies and cream (Bokuaka, E)
Some people might tell Akaashi that he couldn't bake his worries away.
But some people haven't dated Bokuto Koutarou.
Alright, so I’ve been on a bokuaka binge these past few days, so the next few recs will be for them! This fic is so funny lmao, the idea of Akaashi stress baking was just super interesting to me. But not only that, the fic was super touching and romantic jsdnfk I love domestic bokuaka so much, and this delivered!
Corpora Permutavere (Bokuaka, T)
“Akaaaaashi, you gotta make a wish after you blow them out!” Bokuto was leaning across the table so far that the candle flames danced in his eyes, turning them to molten metal. And while Akaashi found himself appreciating his teammate’s birthday fervor in a way that was soft, foreign, and somewhat unexpected, Bokuto should still have known that this level of spectacle was neither Akaashi’s preference, nor something he was entirely comfortable with.
Under such pressure, he blew out the candles. Then, as requested, made a wish.
I wish Bokuto-san understood the perspective of someone other than himself.
Bokuto and Akaashi switch bodies. It goes as well as you might expect.
I assume most people have already read this fic and I’m super late lmao?? But in case you haven’t, you need to! It’s just a great story dealing with romance, mental health, and character growth. I tore through this fic, it was so amazing and beautifully written. So many great, though provoking lines/scenes had me thinking about this fic days later, and even writing this I feel like rereading fff. Please go check it out so you can fully understand how A+ this fic is. And please follow @silvercistern !!!
bitter (Bokuaka, G)
He accepted his classmate's chocolates gracefully, then declared his lack of interest with as much dignity as he could muster. She deserved the courtesy. At least she'd acknowledged that Valentine's Day was all about her, and not about him in the slightest.
Because if any of these girls had taken the time to actually get to know him, they’d quickly realize something even more important than his lack of interest in girls.
And that was that Akaashi hated sweets.
This is another one by @silvercistern because I am addicted to their bokuaka characterizations lmao. The way Akaashi is written is so amusing and complex, and the bokuaka dynamics are lovable and cute fff. The awkwardness of Akaashi’s love life and his hatred of Valentine’s Day made for a wonderful read, so I can’t help but share this fic as well!
5 tips to get your guy (Bokuaka, G)
Second-year Bokuto gets fantastic dating advice from his sister’s magazines
This fic was so damn adorable, that’s all I have to really say about it lmao @mooites did a great job of making this such a fun read! I loved the inclusion of Bokuto’s sisters and how their trends benefit him lmao it was just really cute to see him use magazines to act on his feelings. I loved this fic, so please check it out if you haven’t!
Behind Bricks (Bokuaka, E)
Akaashi has always had a good idea of what his future would look like.
Becoming a prostitute hadn't been part of the plan.
Bokuto Koutarou wasn't part of the plan, either. Akaashi meets him by chance, and is drawn in by Bokuto's optimism and authenticity. He's never met anyone like Bokuto, and despite his initial reluctance, Akaashi finds himself getting a little too attached.
Alright, last bokuaka fic lmao but another amazing one no less! @worthlesspride writes some of the best and sweetest bokuaka there is, so I recommend all their fics (not just for bokuaka, but all pairs!). I don’t wanna spoil much about this fic, but please read the tags before diving in! You won’t be disappointed, the plot is A++ and the nice mix of angst and romance is to die for <3
walls (Kurotsuki, G)
Kuroo is the best sparring partner that Tsukishima could ask for, but that doesn’t make him any less annoying of one,
So @ohoholyshit wrote a BNHA AU for kurotsuki, and I’m still not over it. Just...please read it, it’s so lovely and funny and just kljsfjdssjkd I live for kurotsuki being awkward boys with their poorly concealed crushes lmao. Also the quirks they’ve been given are so fitting and creative, I was so into this verse fff.
Angels in the Snow (Promptis, E)
On a snowy morning, the wolf Prince Noctis discovers an intruder, a fox boy from Niflheim, playing in the snow. Though they quickly become best friends, everyone knows Prompto Argentum does not belong in the Lucis palace, and Noctis can only protect him for so long, especially when Prompto isn't exactly what he seems.
Okay so this is the only non-Haikyuu! fic on this list, but it’s still amazing and if you like FFXV then you need to read it. It has everything from angst, to cute romantic moments, and ofc, omegaverse. I love @emeraldwaves and her writing, and she’s really outdone herself with this fic!
Alright, so those were all the fics I’ve read recently or that I’m currently following, down below are links to some of my all time favorites! All these fics are gorgeously written, with plots that captivate me with every read. These are the fics I have saved, downloaded, and that I reread again and again. Please give them a look!
I sure hope that guy gets fired (Iwaoi, T) ---all time favorite, like...shit idek
silver tongue (Iwaoi, E)
Mind Reader (Iwaoi, E)
you’re looking like you fell in love tonight (Iwaoi, T)
Sing For Me (Iwaoi, E)
Add New Contact (Daisuga, G)
Requiem for the Moon (Kurotsuki, M)
Police Dog (Kyouhaba, E)
Being Gross (Kurotsuki, E)
to the beat of my heart (Kurotsuki, E)
In Defense of Reptiles and Other Gross Things (Iwaoi, T)
Provocation Expert (Kurotsuki, M)
And finally, I want to list a few authors here where yes, I recced a few of their individual fics, but honestly, all their fics are amazing. Like. They all need to be consumed. Read all their fics. They’re all top notch, all quality, you won’t be let down ever, I’m certainly not. The writing is incredible, the humor is there, and idek what else to say. I freak out for these authors and so should you!
Ivyfics @ivyfics (I’m subscribed to like...way too many of Ivy’s fics, which is why none are mentioned above, but just know that I’ve read everything and constantly am dying for more, mmkay, thanks)
timkons @90stimkon (A God for Every Season and Principles are some of the best fics ever, you can fight me on this)
realmSpinner @rhealmobsidi (Everything. Like. Everything. I’m so excited for all the December fics that Kiko is going to post ffff)
caelestisxyz @caelestisxyz (Again, everything. Amazing plots, heartbreaking angst, awesome endings)
EmeraldWaves @emeraldwaves (MY BETA AND MY BFF who has the best ideas and one of the loveliest writing styles)
