i'm going to be real with you guys for a moment. i don't think i'll continue following bsd much after this point

#i take back what i said about being excited for what's to come. i mean i am. in a very general impersonal way. #but the way the series is going. if the ending of the anime is going to be followed by the manga in a similar direction #is just very different from the silly armed detective agency vs port mafia authors with superpowers slightly high-stakes slice of life #that i originally signed up for. i've felt this way the whole decay of angels arc and just stuck around to see what happens #and because i care about the characters. bsd was always a character-focused manga for me #but the direction it seems to be taking is this massive epic entire-world-at-stake military scifi drama #where super epic power-up style ability weapons (and one-off overpowered nameless ability users are introduced and killed off in the same #scene. like the time manipulation catgirl) take the forefront at the expense of actual character focus and character development #like why are most of the (original) cast completely unaccounted for in what was meant to be a satisfying ending. #did asagiri forget that atsushi is the main character. why did tachihara's and sigma's arcs get cut short like that. #and frankly i feel like bsd started to take this direction from storm bringer onwards. the focus and scope of it is very different #to for example the untold origins or dazai's entrance exam or even 55 minutes. but if i were to theorise i would say that the scope of #the current direction of bsd must have started germinating during the 55 minutes light novel. if you can see what i mean #anyway more importantly i find that the tone is now entirely different from early bsd. it's just not the series that i fell in love with #so i think it's best that i stop here before letting it turn sour like jujutsu kaisen is to me now. #i have the manga (and anime) that i can reread (rewatch) up to the perfect crime arc whenever i want #i can reread the sskk fight of volume 20 whenever i want. i can revisit sigma and nikolai's chapters. there's wan. there's the light novels #and there's the wonderful fanfics and fanart and so many metas to read. that's what brings me joy more than the series itself nowadays. #that's all. end of era i guess. to an extent

So I don't know if it was ever revealed how Duncan felt when we killed Malistaire all three times but I'm wondering if maybe some part of him could hate us for that too. Like you hear that and you go "but why. Malistaire was terrible and even Duncan knew that(?). Why would he hate you for getting rid of him."

But like I think it's so....... interesting in a very, very, very sad way how Duncan so easily latches onto anyone who directly feeds into his delusions of grandeur. And that's no fault of his own that he was manipulated by the nasty Schism but when you think about how desperately clung to the idea that Malistaire, easily one of the greatest necromancers any of us had ever heard of (at that time), somehow actually recognized Duncan's talents (even when canon supports that Duncan wasn't all that talented, at least no more than the next necromancer) and then praised him for it so often that Duncan believed that he would be the next Death Professor is. I mean ☹️

So like with that mindset I unfortunately feel like it would be quite easy to twist even Malistaire's death as something that's horrible and awful and all our fault. ESPECIALLY if the Schism was feeding into Duncan's already broken mind and shattered ego and was constantly telling him that everything bad that ever happened to him ever in his life was Our Fault. That's like a realistic conclusion that someone like Duncan could come to

And like, at this point in time, are Malistaire's crimes even a factor in how he thinks????? Was Duncan ever able to separate Malistaire's talent and skills and prowess from the terrible and awful things he did? If Duncan wasn't able to consciously tell that distinction in the first place I can't imagine it would be any better during the years he was being manipulated and isolated and lied to

Like in Duncan's mind it probably isn't, "maybe I shouldn't idolize a national criminal, or idolize anyone at all for that matter, and aspire to be like someone so harmful when I can recognize my own talent and build from there" it's probably more like, "you (the wizard) permanently got rid of a brilliant mind, an innocent person who just made a few mistakes, and someone who believed in me no matter what just so that you could be the better than me and loved by everyone else" and that's! very sad actually!

#this is all speculation btw idk if any of this is canon. how duncan feels about all this #i know i keep saying the exact same shit over and over but.... really not a fan of how the game handled duncan! sorry! #i know wizard101 isnt supposed to be about every single character gets a satisfying ending to their arc- #-meaning not everyone in the story will face consequences and/or find a happy ending and like thats fine they dont need to #but idkkkk its just imo really sad how essentially a kid suffers frrom something he cant control by himself (his ego)- #and then instead of getting help he is instead ignored (ambrose) and then manipulated and brought up by a cult #and then when it becomes super apparent how... TERRIBLE his life really is and we defeat him he just... goes back?????? #we.... we LET him go back???? i mean we're not responsible for other people's bad decisions or mental health but bro.... #and then when we tell ambrose he's just like “oh. too bad. well anyways-” AND IM LIKE WELL THATS THE REASON!!!!! modern greek myth fans are so exhausting because tell me why the comment sections of epic the musical songs are filled with people insisting odysseus (who held "bride prizes" or sex slaves like the rest of the heroes) never actually cheated on penelope because those evil magic women compelled him? calypso sure but circe? i have to laugh my guys odysseus didn't give a fuck about fidelity of all things. this was thousands of years ago these men were terrible monsters and to engage with the text or even adaptations of it you have to both accept their moral framework was very different and condemnable, not try and whitewash the terrible things they did to make it more palatable for yourself. im not saying it's #problematic to find these characters or stories compelling or engage with them (i am an epic the musical enjoyer myself) but man the fandomification of the terrible men of myth and legend is insane

#i dont intrinsically find retellings and adaptations that make these aspects more toned down to be acceptable for modern audiences bad #but the side effect is always those audiences trying to super-impose these toned down interpretations back onto the original text #odysseus was not a wife guy #achilles and patrocolus were not soft boys #many if not all of these men were rapists and horrible people #and the way these men (always men) get rehabilitated by modern audiences and even their translators #is always so frustrating #epic the musical #odysseus #ish rants

must make the final decision… lighter or darker?? I thought I’d go lighter but after living with both I’m not so sure anymore. I still wish both were just a touch more green—I’ve actually thought (in my current wild-eyed state) about mixing a cup of the leftover living room green into the gallon just to see if I can get it to pull a little greener in the light.

#this is something I learned with my office back in Texas + the half bath downstairs #in a room with indirect or electric-only light #any teal or blue-green will pull super blue #so to get the exact perfect shade of dark rich lush jewel-tone teal I wanted in the half bath #I had to actually pick a very dark green with slight blue undertones #and then it showed up the right shade of dark teal in the light #the colors here look very green (MUCH more green than blue) on swatches or in direct sunlight #but in this light they look so blue to me

gah the youtube caligari musical was so weird and was such a mixed bag. and yet I keep getting the songs stuck in my head all the time
