Okay, here’s the context for the previous post.
Infotext: Further distress was occasioned by the tip’s local residents: the rats were the size of kittens. Nobody pointed them out as they scuttled into view behind the make-up assistants. An attack of suriphobia would mean having to move the set-up somewhere rodent-free, and there just wasn’t time for that on a typial Doctor Who film schedule!

Saint of the Day – 17 March – St Gertrude of Nivelles O.S.B. (626-659) was a 7th-century Religious Abbess who, with her mother Itta, founded the Abbey of Nivelles located in present-day Belgium.   She was born in 626 at Landen, Belgium and died on 17 March 659 at Nivelles, Belgium of natural causes.   Patronages – against fear of mice and rates, against suriphobia, fever, mental disorders, insanity, of cats, of gardeners, innkeepers, hospitals, the mentally ill, pilgrims, travellers, suriphobics, sick, poor, prisoners, Landen, Belgium, Nivelles, Belgium, Wattenscheid, Germany.   Attributes – a nun with a crosier, with cats, with mice, a woman spinning.
Tumblr media
Our Saint was born at Landen, Belgium in 626 and died at Nivelles, 659;  she was just thirty-three, the same age as Our Lord.   Both her parents, Pepin of Landen and Itta were held to be holy by those who knew them;  her sister Begga is numbered among the Saints.   On her husband’s death in 640, Itta founded a Benedictine monastery at Nivelles, which is near Brussels and appointed Gertrude its abbess when she reached twenty, tending to her responsibilities well, with her mother’s assistance and following her in giving encouragement and help to monks, particularly Irish ones, to do missionary work in the locale.
Saint Gertrude’s piety was evident even when she was as young as ten, when she turned down the offer of a noble marriage, declaring that she would not marry him or any other suitor:  Christ alone would be her bridegroom.
She was known for her hospitality to pilgrims and her aid to missionary monks.   She gave land to one monk so that he could build a monastery at Fosse.   By her early thirties Gertrude had become so weakened by the austerity of abstaining from food and sleep that she had to resign her office and spent the rest of her days studying Scripture and doing penance.   It is said that on the day before her death she sent a messenger to Fosse, asking the superior if he knew when she would die.
Tumblr media
His reply indicated that death would come the next day during holy Mass-the prophecy was fulfilled.   Her feast day is observed by gardeners, who regard fine weather on that day as a sign to begin spring planting.
Devotion to St. Gertrude became widely spread in the Lowlands and neighbouring countries.
Commonly seen running up her pastoral staff or cloak are hopeful-looking mice representing Souls in Purgatory, to which she had an intense devotion, just as with St Gertrude the Great.   Even as recently as 1822, offerings of mice made of gold and silver were left at her shrine.   Another patronage is to travellers on the high seas.   It is held that one sailor, suffering misfortune while under sail, prayed to the Saint and was delivered safely.
Tumblr media
Just before her death in 659, Gertrude instructed the nuns at Nivelles to bury her in an old veil left behind by a travelling pilgrimess and Gertrude’s own hair shirt.   Gertrude’s choice of burial clothing is a pattern in medieval hagiography as an expression of humility and piety.   Her death and the image of her weak and humble figure is in fact a critical point in her biographer’s narrative.   Her monastery also benefited from this portrayal because the hair cloth and veil in which Gertrude was interred became relics.  At Nivelles, her relics were only publicly displayed for feast days, Easter and other holy days.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shrine of St Gertrude of Nivelles, originally made in 1272-1298; this reproduction, in the Pushkin Museum, was cast from the original.   In 1940, a German bomb smashed the original reliquary into 337 fragments.   It was subsequently rebuilt.

What A Rat Infestation Can Do to your Mental Health
What A Rat Infestation Can Do to your Mental Health Believe me I understand, and no your not crazy, it’s actually pretty common. Rats can be scary, the scratching in the ceiling, or walls, late at night, when it’s dark. But its real something is up there, but stick with me i will make it less scary. Its commonly called Musophobia :
Musophobia is also known as Suriphobia and Murophobia (murine stems from the Muridae family that encompasses mice and rats) .
Musophobia is created by the unconscious as a protective mechanism. This mechanism was probably created as some point in the persons past when they had a traumatic experience with a mouse or rate. Examples of this could be having your house or room invaded by them, finding them eating your food, being surprised when they jump from a trash can, touching them while getting up as they run from under furniture, smelling them, or getting sick from them (The Black Plague in Europe was carried by rats). There are hundreds of ways people could have developed their traumatic experience.
This fear could be triggered by the presence of a mouse or rat in a room or store, seeing them on TV or in movies, someone joking about them, or smelling them. These are only a few possible examples. Everyone experiences their fears in different ways and intensity levels and some react in different ways, such as screaming, running to different rooms, and/or getting to higher ground.
As with any phobia, the symptoms vary by person depending on their level of fear. The symptoms of Musophobia typically include extreme anxiety, dread and anything associated with panic such as shortness of breath, rapid breathing, irregular heartbeat, sweating, nausea, inability to articulate words or sentences, dry mouth and shaking.
Read more about it at http://www.musophobia.com/tips.htm
Musophobia is a very common phobia affecting homeowners throughout the Texas and the rest of the United States. Where some people, keep them as pets, but people with musophobia tend to think they are filthy, disease ridden carriers of death and they smell like pirates. http://www.fearof.net/fear-of-mice-phobia-musophobia/  has this to say about why:
Rats and mice are known carriers of pathogens. They are also infamous in history for spreading the Black Plague which wiped away large chunks of the human population. In general, they are known to dwell in sewers, drainages and dark, wet or dirty places. Rats are also known to carry fleas and other parasites that harm not just humans but pets as well.
Wild rats and rodents are not welcome guests in human homes, so they tend to hide in cracks and crevices found around pantries, kitchens and other places having an abundant storage of food. Naturally, they might spring on unsuspecting individuals and startle them.
Like most animal phobias, the fear of mice also stems, usually, from a negative or traumatic experience with rats. Incidents in childhood where a rat has bitten a child or loved ones can also trigger this phobia.
Humans are conditioned from childhood to fear wild rats and rodents. An adult, parent or caregiver, might have been startled by a rat and screamed or climbed up on a chair. Children unknowingly learn to imitate this behavior and the occasional fright triggers an anxiety response that might turn into lifelong phobia of rats and mice.
Popular culture depicts these creatures in negative light: cartoons (Tom and Jerry), books (Pied Piper of Hamilton), movies, and TV shows etc show stereotypical traits about them. Typically: a rat scares the woman protagonist who jumps and climbs up screaming on a chair/table. (Despite these stereotypes, Musophobia actually affects both genders equally.)
As for the symptoms they conclude: (read full article here)
Symptoms of fear of mice phobia
The symptoms of Musophobia vary depending on the extent of fear the phobic experiences. Just like any other Zoophobia, the fear of mice typically triggers physical and mental symptoms which include:
Screaming, crying, climbing on beds or tables/chairs
Trying to flee
Shaking, trembling, and sweating profusely.
Having accelerated heartbeat, breathing rapidly or gasping
Feeling nauseated, vomiting or having other signs of gastrointestinal distress
Musophobes might experience anxiety/panic attacks at the mere mention of mice, or even from watching them feeding on trash, or in pictures, on TV etc.
There is no question as to if it exist and you are not alone. But as crazy as it sounds, those rats would rather play with you then bite you. We have a great article written about the dangers of them on our website you can read by clicking here. But if you need rat removal in any of these areas let us know and we will be quick to help as our schedule permits.

Dinadaga ka ba?
(From October 18, 2013. Probably around past midnight. Living room)
" A person who suffers from this may experience extreme anxiety, dread and anything associated with panic such as shortness of breath, rapid breathing, irregular heartbeat, sweating, nausea, inability to articulate words or sentences, dry mouth and shaking."
Musophobia/ Suriphobia/ Muriphobia
Fear of rats.
Di ko alam kung kelan nagstart to. Pero tuwing makakakita ako ng daga- (picture, realistic na cartoon, laruan, replica, at lalong lalo na yung live na gumagalaw na punyetang daga), di ko alam yung nararamdaman ko.
Alam mo yung feeling na umiihi ka tapos kinilig ka? hahaha. yung parang ganun in a bad way. Yung bibilis heart beat mo, yung manginginig ka na lang na ewan. Hindi mo macontrol yung magiging reaction ng katawan mo. Parang mangangati ka. Mahihilo ng konti. Nakakadiri. Nakakatakot.
Yeah, parang mababaw lang. Sasabihin ng iba "Daga lang yan. Mas malaki ka diyan." OO. ALAM KO. Pero iba kasi pag ikaw yung nasa kalagayang ganito. Ewan ko na lang sayo.
Parang tanga lang diba? Alam ko. HAHAHAHA. Minsan tinry ko na labanan to. Sinubukan kong hawakan yung laruang daga na panakot nila sakin. Punyeta. Nagtatalon yung daga. Talon din ako sa sofa. Tawa ulit tayo. hahahaha.
Siguro naman, eventually, mawawala din to. Tiwala lang. Puso. haha. Lalabanan natin to. PARA SA BAYAN! hahaha. Sabi nga ng kaibigan kong si Papa aids: "Mind over matter" daw. In time talaga, sana, maovercome ko tong fear of rats. Para masabi ko din minsan na daga lang yan.

foxy-boo replied to your post “I always feel vaguely guilty for being afraid of rats, because I know...”
That makes me sad :( Everyone should know the love of a rat. My mum was completely terrified of them for years but I've had five now so she slowly started to like them, other than the tails
I do get that they're very nice pets, but I'm just... nope. I'm not as afraid of them as I used to be, though. When I was a child I was terrified every time I left the house, because I had been told three untrue pieces of information about rats: that you were never more than ten feet away from a rat, that if a rat saw you it would bite you, and that if a rat bit you then you would die. I guess I thought that my entire life had been a long series of close brushes with death. I used to stay up in a tree for hours at a time too afraid to come down (this only got worse once I'd stayed up long enough that it got dark).
And... I know now that these three 'facts' are anything but, but I've the terror is too ingrained to go away entirely. To be honest I'm not really interested in ever recovering to the point that I could have a pet rat, because getting myself to that point would just be too distressing and I have other non-optional distressing things to do without taking on something I could avoid.
