for all the comedy, Spy x Family is actually a really good deconstruction and commentary about how War is nothing but useless violence and how propaganda is so dangerous to the dehumanization of “the other”. and there are SO MANY good moments that stick out (the Handlers speech to the terrorist students, Franky talking about psychology in the war , Twilight own thoughts after the war etc...)

but personally this is one of my favorites in both its simplicity and symbolism. Here you have a Man from Westalia, and a Woman from Ostania, both orphaned during the war, and have committed incredible acts of violence to survive in that world and provide for the people in their lives they want to protect, turned into weapons by their governments to commit further acts of violence in the name of peace, all while both were raised on propaganda to believe the other country is full of nothing but horrible monsters.

and yet, and yet

beyond the war and violence and bigotry and arbitrary state lines and nationalism, they were both sung the same children lullaby by their mothers as children.

its so simple in its message, were all the same when it comes down to it. we were all children once, we all played with toys and hung out with friends and listened to our mothers sing us to sleep.

Forger Fam and WISE Budget😅

Sylvia’s current concern according to Endo: Balancing WISE Budget

I mean how couldn’t she be concerned when maintaining Strix is so financially consuming.

I mean look at all the expenses the Forger family has made in less than a year:

1.Anya’s tuition that costs about $35,000 to $40,000, and that doesn’t include the uniform and school supplies.

2.Anya’s clothes and she seemed to have new clothes regularly and Endo said these are mostly bought by Loid/Twilight.

3.That castle rent that costs more than $77 000 and added the other check, I'm guessing for the furniture they used, that costs $17 600. (Yes, it costs more than Anya's tuition fee, I mean it's a castle 😂)

4.Loid could also not just be purchasing clothes for Anya. It looks like he also pays for Yor’s wardrobe and Yor mentioned that he got so many clothes for her in the boutique before the Eden Interview.

5.Loid is also the one who pays for their dates, seems like, and his dates with Yor doesn’t seem cheap at all, they seem to dine at fancy restaurants that require reservation.

6.The big heap of cash he pays Franky every time he babysits Anya and Bond.

And here it looks like the check his giving Franky costs 20,000 dalcs that is equivalent to $44,000 (one dalc is quivalent to $2.20). It's even more expensive than Anya's tuition, what?! 😂😂 (Twilight is literally willing to spend a lot money just to be sure that Anya won't be home alone ever again, he's not taking a chance on her being kidnapped again when he left her alone on ep1)

7.Loid didn’t seem to also hold back in spending a good amount of money for their apartments furniture and for Anya’s bedroom and even bought her a lot of toys and picture books.

8.And of course their out of town/out of the country family trips featured in the Code White movie. Those must’ve cost a lot considering they have to book a hotel and all. And according to a movie spoiler from tiktok, that wasn’t the last time they went on a family out of town trip.

Loid Forger does have a high paying profession. However, according to Endo, his earnings as a psychiatrist were only about $140,000 per year, not per month, PER YEAR. How could he cover that much expenses? Of course WISE covers the rest if it was crucial to the mission, or when Twilight insists it to be. I mean he always says that everything he does is for his mission so the one who has to pay was the one who gave him that mission.

(Most of these expenses didn't even contribute to the progress of Operation Strix. It just funds Twilight into sinking deeper into his fake fam and keeps the family even more attached to each other😂)

Endo said WISE is not really generous when it comes to paying their agents but they seem to be lenient on spending their money on the Forgers. I mean they have to invest for their Top Spy's family and World Peace do depend on them.

So Twilight, pile the bills and let Sylvia handle the rest😂

kinda neat how media can be used as a jumping off point to learn about new things. there are the obvious things like documentaries, but then there are all sorts of other things. when 'hamilton' first got big, you ended up with people learning about aaron burr and the new york water system and various trivia from usa history around that era which wasn't even featured in the musical itself.

when 'mr bates vs the post office' came out recently over here (UK), a whole lot of people were able to appreciate the impact the whole horizon/post office affair had on its victims. sure, the story has been in the news for a few years now, but it's the first time it's been a story actively discussed in daily life. and people learning more about it has actively pushed the government to consider speeding up compensation or mass exonerations.

and even aside from these obvious instances, there are a lot that don't tell you up front and you realise as you're watching. when shows and films and books reference real life events through the veneer of fiction. suzume, referencing the tohoku earthquake of 2011 (something I imagine pretty much every japanese citizen is aware of - suzume's own age is very deliberate in how she lost her mother to the quake. she was very young at the time it happened, but it still had a huge impact on her and many others). link click, referencing the 2008 sichuan earthquake (and deliberately having the arc revolve around school-age children in a run-down old building when irl one of the reasons the casualties were so high was because of poor construction of school buildings). various kdramas referencing generational SK disasters: imf financial crisis (explored in 'reborn rich', but I imagine many other shows), sampoong department store collapse (referenced in 'move to heaven', but again, once I knew the history, it made a lot of sense why so many corrupt villains in kdramas were specifically involved in construction).

it's a mix of how, if you know the events being referenced, they'll impact you more. but if you don't know the events, then it gives you a reason to learn. I personally had very very vague memories of the 2008 earthquake, just in terms of some clips on the news at the time. I had no idea about the various factors that made the disaster so much worse until I realised what was being referenced when watching the show and decided to read up on it.

I have somewhat conflicted feelings on how fictional (or dramatised in the case of mr bates) media approaches specifically *disasters*, as opposed to other historical events, but I think the shows I've mentioned here at least take a victim-first approach.

#I would also mention tangentially that spy x family uses a mishmash of real history but it doesn't fully map one to one #so I didn't really want to put it in the main post when the others are talking about specifics. like yeah sxf sorta does cold war #and a lot of the countries are somewhat analogues (westalis/ostania being the obvious ones and a load of place names matches german places) #but I think given the whole commentary is more focused on war and propaganda in general rather than doing a deep dive on the actual cold wa #idk what this is. just been musing lately and seems like everyone's been watching mr bates vs. and then I ended up on a wiki spree #finding out about dutch child benefits scandal and robodebt in aus. Spy x Family vol.1 by Tatsuya Endo

You can practically hear the music. No, I haven't seen the anime, but this manga is already giving off spy movie vibes. I'm loving it.

I'm loving the juxtaposition of Twilight|Loid as this calculating, smooth spy - with endless disguises and perfect emotional distance - and then he gets the mission.

The one that will break it or make it.

Marry and have a child.

Well, not really, but-!

His reactions are absolutely delightful through this whole volume and the way he has to learn to unwind a bit, not be so inflexible with himself and others. The way his heart foes get stirred by both his new child and his new wife - in different ways of course.

Next we have the Thorn Princess|Yor, who I at first thought was using that space-cadet persona as a mask - but it turns out she really is like that, and honestly, I like that even more. The office lady is an assassin and the assassin is an office lady and that's wonderful.

Her honest belief in Loid is vary charming and though he sometimes finds it baffling he is charmed by her - especially when going gets rough and she shows off her assassin skills, she is pretty  darn amazing and his delight at that is pretty obvious.

Then we have Anya, the cute little menace who thinks her new 'fake' parents are the coolest thing since EVER. Naturally she has the advantage of being a telepath and knowing their every secret thought. However, just because she can hear people's thoughts doesn't mean she knows what to do with or about what she hears. She is still a little girl and it shows.

She quickly manages to win over both of her new parents who are absolutely ready to murder a man for her by the end of volume 1 and I'm all about that.

I'm really looking forward to development of this small family.

Now for some reading commentary I typed while reading this so you can see me freak out:

Poor Karen, though maybe not if she's like the crime boss's daughter XD I guess we'll never find out - she's just another sacrifice for the mission.

None of the 'refinement' is actually suited for them - but I bet it'll be useful later - somehow surprisingly, because rule of funny.  I love how they just squared up to help an old lady, they are so cute ;o;

OMG the selection process is cutthroat - and Yor's 'no I idea what I'm doing, so I'll just follow Loid's lead' and Anya saluting a bald man - fantastic

a little detail here i really like is that despite being an adult and acting as Anyas mother, Yor still respects Anyas room as her space and doesnt feel entitled to intrude into her room. she had no intentions of going in there at all. it was only when she noticed that Anya seemed to have forgotten something that she even thought to go in, but hesitated as she couldnt ask anya since she wasnt there.

its small but i really liked it because its very common for parents to feel that they can do whatever they wish with a childs space simply because “im there parent” forgetting thats kids are people too and deserve to have their privacy and space and boundaries respected too.

Yes ultimately Yor did go into anyas room, but it was honestly done in a respectful way, with yor whispering her apology for doing so to herself, and doing so for a good reason. another instance of the forger family practicing healthier family dynamics than most real familys do

SXF Chapter 93 Analysis-Loid on Anya's Past

Okay, I wanted to talk about this scene in this post first.

I love how Twilight doesn't ask Anya this question in his Twilight mode. It didn't feel like he was interrogating her. He was just genuinely curious about the origins of his adoptive daughter and this just shows that this curiosity about her past was always within his thoughts.

And judging Anya's reaction upon his sudden question, she didn't look like scared and panicky to me. She's just like genuinely surprised, like oh, is it weird that I'm good at it? Her expression kinda reminds me of her reaction at Loid correcting her name on Chapter 90.5

The same deadpan stare.

My guess is that her name and classical language were both things that were part of her identity before she can even remember it. And it being questioned makes her a little curious and confuse about herself as well.

I think classical language was a natural for thing for Anya, it could be from the place she grew up in and I don't think it was a product of the experiments on her (if it was, she would be conscious about being too good about it for she always tries to hide anything that might reveal her being a telepath). So I think her knowledge of classical language would not connect her relation to the experiments but rather to her origins which she may not have a memory of.

I think that Anya might be telling the truth on this part. She was so little back then (1-3 years old, I suppose), I'm sure all she can remember was being experimented on and not anything about her early stages in her life where she was not in the custody of the scientists but rather with her real family. (But at least she has some memories of her biological mother, based on her reaction on the Eden interview, she might have been with Anya for a quite some time)

I believe that this could serve as a turning point for Twilight to delve deeper into Anya's background. But as I already discussed from this post, he has this hesitance when it comes to digging deep about his fake daughter, for he could stumble upon a truth that he might not be capable of accepting. A truth that might take her away from him.

Following their conversation that night, Anya appeared unconcerned about Loid's inquiries regarding her knowledge of the classical language. He likely dismissed that curiosity from his mind. If he was planning to research about Anya, Anya would definitely know and of course she would panic and worry about him finding about her abilities.

But it revealed to us one thing, Loid is indeed concerned about Anya's history, he didn’t completely pushed the thought in his mind, meaning it was indeed something that he considered to be crucial, but he is choosing to not make it his priority to know, I guess he still in the mindset that there’s no use in prying too much or rather it wouldn’t be good for him, his mission and their family if he did.

Okay, enough of the serious stuff, now let me appreciate the father-daughter moments they have in this chapter

Aww he looks so proud of his little girl, they both come a long way!

Just look at her precious smile!❤️❤️😭 The father-daughter interaction I crave! I hope there's more of this, please, Endo-sensei

And this exchange between them, Twilight/Loid is becoming more of a real father to Anya, I just love to see him so concerned about his baby. I wonder if he was putting the blanket back on her every time he saw she had kicked it off so she won't cold when she wakes up. That was canon for me.

I love re-reading the earliest chapters of Spy x Family, because it's so cool to see the difference in the character designs then vs the ones now!

He doesn't have as much of a big difference in appearance as Anya, though. She almost looks like how Damian imagines her in his shoujo filter 😂

Every day I am rewarded for having Mr Henderson as one of my favourite SxF characters.

He's such a good man who genuinely, sincerely cares so much for his students.

Not only does he go personally to the place where the bus has been detained as soon as possible, but he doesn't hesitate to put his own life on the line to bring food and water to the children and try to put them at ease — and then he decides to take an unwell colleague's place and stay in the bus.

(Look at how the students react when they see him! They're scared and tired and I'm sure seeing any adult they know would prompt a similar reaction, but still — that girl says that they missed him. He's a teacher they know to be fair and to help them when they need it (see Short Mission #4 or Chapter 64 for instance), so it makes sense that they'd feel particularly comforted by his presence. He's not just an adult they know, he's an adult they trust, and Henderson knows this.)

This man has the moral backbone of a steel beam and a true dedication for education and I appreciate him so much.

To me this is extremely important, because first of all, you can’t fake a blush, second, he’s basically admitting right here, by stating that being with Yor has thrown him off, that he has feelings for her, and that means that his feelings made him misjudge a situation, but it also means that although he was trying to honey trap her, the words that came out of his mouth were words that he subconsciously meant
