Sunday Lesson: Mastering Tai Chi with David Dorian-Ross, ep. 1
Obviously, I cannot really “teach what I’ve learned” from a martial arts video course by writing on a blog. So this is mostly notes and bullet points. 
QotD: 
“We get best at what we practice the most. We get worst at what we practice least.”
For getting the absolute beginner started without having taught anything yet, DDR (all 90s kids are giggling at this nickname) starts off with what he calls “Easy Tai Chi” which is designed to be easy to follow even if you have no idea what you’re doing. It is very similar to the “Daily Flow” lessons he does for free online at TaijiFit, if people who can’t afford this course or aren’t sure yet if they want to invest the money in it want to try that instead.
The whole of the course, however, is designed to teach the Yang Style 40-Movement form. (Long form, as opposed to the newer short form.) He also intends to teach 10 classical taiji principals as well as “meta-concepts.” Yang Style is what he is most familiar with but also the most popular style around the world.
At the end, DDR demonstrates the entire Yang Style 40-Movement long form, which is about 9 minutes for him.
Learned moves:
sinking the chi
bow step
empty step
T-step
holding the ball/moon (bao qiu/yue)
Stepping Drill #1
bow step w/ hold the ball
transition bow step to T-step

transition empty step to bow step & switch direction of hold the ball

Important concepts:
Taijiquan is “an extremely unique complex system of martial, meditative, therapeutic, and spiritual disciplines.” 
“If you only think of it as a martial art - a system of self-defense, you’d be partially correct.”
“If you think of it only as an energy-based health and longevity practice, you’d be partially correct.”
“If you think of it only as a philosophy that encourages what we call ‘harmony and balance’, you’d be [partially correct].”
Tai Chi is a path that seeks to be true to nature and find harmony and balance in every situation. To change human behavior takes effort on every level.
Tai Chi was born out of necessity from centuries of war and natural disasters which disrupted and stagnated the well-being of the people.
The principals and concepts of taijiquan come from the Tai Chi Classics. Principals are not “rules,” but “a beginning point - a place for you to start your personal exploration.”
First principal: energy coming forth from the top of the head
Critique: DDR claims that you should be able to feel energy tingling on the surface of your hands and that if you don’t, you will eventually. This is classic power of suggestion. Magicians have been using “can you feel the energy tingling on your skin” for centuries, and psychologists have been replicating similar illusions for quite some time as well (though I admit that I don’t remember hearing of this specific one being used in a study). I have seen so many fake-ass witches and energy healers use tingling skin this to “prove their power.” It is one of the easiest suggestions to trick a brain to believe.
Now, I’m not saying taijiquan doesn’t actually involve moving energy, and, hey, maybe some people can feel that. I am actually very open-minded about the paranormal because I’m aware that not being able to prove something true isn’t the same thing as having proven it false. But hand/skin tingling is a proven magician’s trick and adding it to your martial arts lessons makes you sound like a crackpot. Especially when you add that if someone doesn’t experience this suggestion, then they will eventually. That is such a trickster line.
Ftr, yes, I did feel my hands tingling. I actually feel it right now too just because I’m talking about skin tingling. My brain is actually super duper suggestible, which isn’t nearly as fun as it sounds.
