Treech dating headcannons
My opinions on how treech would be like in a relationship, in and out of the hunger games, meaning lamina didn't get picked!
kiss me is playing rn, It's so his song yall Trust!
Um... accidentally made a bit of a fanfic rather then a headcannon oneshot... oops??
Warnings: none really just bad Grammer and maybe spelling mistakes as it's like almost 1am and I'm too tired to look over this
Tumblr media
before the hunger games back in D7
Tumblr media
Treech and you met in grade school back when treech talked a whole lot more
Treech definitely was a big talker up until he hit twelve years old. He hardened a bit more and started working, being pulled out of school like a lot of kids his age usually did, like how you did.
You two shared your first kiss in a tree at the ripe age of twelve, that's when treech finally seemed to get what his father and mother would always tell him about meeting the right girl, how he'd want to cherish and protect her from everything and everyone
Just like how he felt right now looking at you with his small hands on yours, beet red in the cheeks just looking at you
Looking away as he thought back on his father's words, he now understood him better to a point still he couldn't fully grasp the whole thing but all that mattered to him was making you smile that big smile you always did when he made silly faces or when he picked up big logs of wood (not very big but still)
"Treech, when you meet the right girl-" his father started, but treech interrupted him like always his face scrunched up in disgust likr how boys usually acted when on the topic of girls at twelve "EW! I don't need a girl!" But treechs father just laughed at his son before continuing ruffling treechs hair a bit as the boy huffed. "You'll want to change to protect her. You'll want to spend every waking moment with her... you'll understand when your older" treech looked up at his dad with confusion, not quite understand what he meant in that moment
You worked for your father's lumber yard people sold you wood for coins, your father usually was there working the shop as you carved small little trinkets in the corner of the shop, treech would come in and sell the wood he had. Most of the time, if he had any free time in that moment, he'd come and sit next to you, watching you carve a small bird. He watched you intently smiling at your flustered face when you couldn't get the angle just right admiring your features from. The chair
When he relized his feelings for you after that kiss he started working not long after, his parents like many others pulling him out of school to go and chop wood for a living a 'lumberjack' was what you called him
And soon after he started callin you 'carver' for your wood carvings
He didn't speak much after that kiss but he seemed to spend every second of his free time to just stay by your side, even going as far as to put your shoes back on your feet when you'd take them off to run in a lake, making you blush and look away thanking him under your breath missing his slight smirk and dark eyes looking at you like you where his whole world.
He knew what his father truly meant by and even more wanting to devote himself to her and wanting for you to do the same for him.
It has taken a few years but finally you two got together when you were fourteen when you couldn't take it anymore and had run up to treech one day in the rain taking him by the shoulders and screaming your feelings at him.
You two where almost inseparable, it made your father smile as he saw you happily chatting away with your lover boy at the counter though he did always have to walk over and tell you to get back to work cuz chatting away with your lumberjack ain't making money you'd sigh and kiss treechs cheek before waving bye to him watching him quickly walk out the door ears slightly red.

The reapings and meeting the tributes
You had heared the man from the capital you couldn't remeber his name buy you did know that his clothes looked expensive, making you grit your teeth at how he smiled whilst talking about a literal death game they forced children to participate and die in.
You stood still as he called the female tribute first
The man on the stage cleared his mouth as he spoke Into the sqeaky mic flinching back a little at the noises the mic made before saying the female tribute of your district "Lamina" He spoke into the mic making your head spin around to a girl that was shaking like a leaf. She was a red haired girl just a year younger then you making you bit your lip as she shakingly walked out of the line the girls all stood in slowly walking up the dirt path looking around until her eyes met your own making you gulp before speaking up impulsively "i.. Lamina! I volunteer as tribute!" You hadn't thought that through at all. All you were thinking about were those scared eyes knowing she wouldnt last long in the arena or at least you thought she wohldnt, you didnt get to see the relieved look lamina had before you were grabbed and dragged onto the stage not getting the chance to walk your feet being dragged in the dirt the man in the fancy outfit looking surprised at you before coughing a bit and continuing
treechs' name got called soon after everyone was done being shocked at your 'stunt' or rather your act of compassion and pure kindness. You felt a tear drop down your cheek as you stared over at him from the other side of the stage, accidentally catching him looking at you with a terrified but also almost angry look
Treech didn't get the chance to say anything
You two where sitting in the old dirty train, your back against treechs front as you let tears fall down your cheeks at the situation you had just out yourself in.. almost regretting your choice to volunteer, almost.
Treech gad helped you out of the cattle car holding out his hand for you to use to hop out of the cattle car, he made sure you stuck to his side not letting his guard down looking around as the other tributes got out of the other parts of the cattle train or whatever you two had just been sitting for hours on.
You looked around and caught the gaze of a little girl and a boy next to her that only had one arm you waved at them the girl waving at you with a smile as the boy only nodded at you
Treech only stared at the others, not saying a word as he held your waist, tightening his grip when the Capitol guards would come too close to him and you
You two got ushered into another car along with the other district tributes, though you here seated next to the one-eyed boy from District 10. He'd been staring at you with his one eye his gaze harsh like he was trying to see if you where good enough to him the whole ride making you gulp and look away eyes back on treech and the District boy that snuck on the cart for who knows what
You had smirked when the boy had been pinned to the car wall by the tall boy named reaper, you already liked reaper you two had said a few sentences to each other 'surved him right capital filth.' You had thought as you clapped gleefully at this, treech gave you a look smirking. You two hadn't noticed that you both had caught the attention of a certain red-haired tribute

I was just reading a new TBOSAS fic on AO3, it’s a Catching Fire AU that I found by religiously stalking the Treech tag. And the author just informed me that they’re not sure on who gets to live or die so my brain made multiple similar AU’s where I decide who lives :)
So first of all, these will all be focussing on Treech and Lamina. I headcanon Lamina as older than Treech, which I seem to be alone in? I’m sorry but she has big sis energy to me, and also I push the “younger people can be the (more) protective one too” agenda. In my head Treech is 15-16ish? So he’s a few months to a bit over a year younger than Lamina (who is canonically 16). I’m not 100% on what to make their relationship to each other, because I like them both as a ship and as platonic besties. I’ll mention which one I’m using (or if I’m making them related somehow) for the AU’s I’ll share in this post (and, likely, following ones 💜).
Starting off strong: not necessarily a catching fire AU but close enough and better because the second rebellion happens much sooner here. Treech and Lamina can be anything here, but I my top picks are siblings or besties since birth so we’ll go with siblings (nice Gloss and Cashmere parallel minus the career/likely volunteer part I know). Treech is two years younger than Lamina here for ✨reasons✨. The 10th games, with Lucy Gray still as victor through cheating, are the starting point of the mentors. From then on, the victors slowly start taking over the mentoring. The academy students still get a chance at winning the Plinth Prize in the beginning, but that quickly falls away and it’s just about getting your name out there and bragging rights for them.
Lamina wins the 16th games at 16 (ha) as the first female victor for district 7. She and one of the two male victors from previous games are to mentor, since the capitol stipulates that if there are male and female victors, the two mentors have to be one guy and one girl. This happens during her second year as mentor. The mentors all watch the reaping together in the capitol, which also gives them more time to sort mentor business. District 7’s turn comes, and Lamina almost feels bad for how relieved she is that the 18-year-old girl is someone she’d only seen in passing and didn’t actually know. Most of her friends that weren’t already safe aged out this year, meaning she didn’t have to worry about potentially seeing anyone she cared about die. Treech’s name isn’t in the bowl as much as many others, especially since her victory meant her family had enough food to not require tesserae anymore. And their family had already been reaped once, so surely they wouldn’t be picked again, right?
Pause for effect
Treech’s name is called out, and Lamina screams in denial before breaking down into sobs while the other two district 7 victors try to comfort her. The rest of the victors look at her with pity and sympathy. He’d been her motivation to win her games, and now Lamina would have to mentor her little brother despite his low odds of winning the games. I have most of this AU worked out in terms of broad strokes, but I’ll move on to the next one and if you want me to expand just ask me.
Quarter Quell Hell:
The 25th hunger games had the twist that the districts have to vote on their tributes, but I’m adding a twist to this Quarter Quell. The tributes are reaped from bowls filled with the names of the 5% of kids with the least votes, to remind the districts that they’re powerless rather than the whole “you’re the reason they’re dying” thing. And when they’re chosen, a screen will show how many people voted. Treech, being the only direct relative of a victor eligible for the games, received zero votes. Nobody wished it upon their family to lose another child, especially given how they’re so kind to everyone (basing this off of Lamina, and Treech doesn’t have much canon personality so it works).
Quarter Quell Hell 2: Electric Boogaloo:
A completely different first quarter quell, where the tributes are picked from the victor’s direct family. A reminder that even the districts’ strongest cannot protect their loved ones from the capitol. The only restriction is that people above the age of 50 cannot compete, because those people have lived out most of their life expectancy, whereas younger people still have most of their life to live, and it’d be like letting the district off easy. Only one previous victor besides Lamina has a brother, and that brother turned 50 just that year, whereas Treech just turned 15 and is very much eligible. The parents that are still alive are well above the age cutoff. So, while there are more than 20 names in the bowl for the women of district 7 (sisters, wives, and daughters), there’s only one in the bowl for the boys. Treech. Worse even, he won’t be mentored by a previous victor but by a top performing student at the academy to reinforce the intended message.
I’m torn on whether to make Gaius Breen (because he deserves more attention) or Festus Creed his mentor (I wanted to go with Pliny, but he’s so tied to Lamina in my head it would feel weird to go that route). I’m gonna go with Festus, because he was nice to Sejanus. Am I lowkey shipping Festus with Treech now, even though they have no canon interaction whatsoever? … yes, yes I am. Sue me. The reaping happens in the capitol, and while the previous victors must go to the capitol to watch the games they’re only brought there a day before the games begin and aren’t allowed to see their family member at all before the games. Both the tribute and the victor will be alone. I’ve got a lot of ideas for this one, and for my newly invented ship FesTreech, so I’ll write a post about that once I’ve posted this.
Star Crossed Lovers AU:
Lamina is the Girl on Fire of this AU, winning her game with only one kill, made out of compassion. Lumber is used as firewood, and her stylist leaned into it. Hence her also getting a literally flaming hot costume. She’s sent into the games with Treech, but unlike Katniss and Peeta these two are in love from the start. In fact, they were dating before they were reaped. Treech joins the careers, but only because he doesn’t want to be the only one left with Lamina at the end because he doesn’t want to fight her. He leaves the pack very early, rather than being forced out, and stays alone for most of the rest of the games, before teaming up with Lamina towards the end when the announcement comes they can survive together. The announcement is revoked, they almost eat the berries, they’re saved, they start a rebellion.
Actual Catching Fire AU:
Lamina won the 71st games, went back home and started dating Treech. Then Treech got reaped and she had to mentor her boyfriend, but he won too so it’s alright. Then the third Quarter Quell happens, and their worst nightmare comes true. Not only are they both reaped to go back into the arena, but they’re going in together this time. And only one of them will survive. They stick together throughout most of the games, only teaming up with Tanner and Coral briefly because they’re good friends of theirs (less than half of the 75th games’ tributes are 10th games tributes because I refuse to kill any of them if I can prevent it). When the arena is destroyed, Treech is taken by the capitol. I choose him because this leads to Lamina going on an absolute rampage. The capitol was not prepared for her wrath at the sheer audacity they have to dare hurt her boyfriend.
What did I just create? I- it’s 4:35AM please cut me some slack

Coral: I’ll be honest, our Menders-
Lucy Gray: Mentors.☺️
Coral: *glares at Lucy Gray* Our Menders might be a bunch of drunk idiots, but their gift baskets and cookies were delicious.

Lucy Gray: Me too!
Mizzen: Free food is free food.
Marcus: Ughhh! Why are you supporting crazy Plinth and his pretty blonde boyfriend?!
Lucy Gray: FYI, Coryo’s hair is not blonde. It’s white as snow-
Marcus: You’re even using his stupid nickname!
Lucy Gray: We’re best friends.☺️
Marcus: Since when?!
Lucy Gray: Since the moment I promised Coryo and Sejanus that I’ll sing ✨Snow On The Beach✨ and ✨Lover✨ on their wedding day.😌💅
Marcus: Don’t say his name!
Lucy Gray: Sejanus.

Coryo: Hey, Birdy.
Sejanus: Hi, Marcus!
Marcus: I ain’t Marcus!
Sejanus: But-
Lucy Gray: I thought you guys were punished by your Dean for ruining your fancy school’s reputation?
Sejanus: We were!😀
Coryo: And this is our punishment.
Treech: To annoy us?!
Coryo: Unfortunately, no. But we were ordered by ✨The Academy✨ to bring you guys some food and supplies.
Lucy Gray: How did you even get your fancy school to support us?
Coryo: ✨Ravinstill Nepotism✨.
Reaper: Ravinstill?!
Coryo: It’s the most powerful name in the Capitol.
Coral: So where are they, Blondie? Where’s my cheesecake and burgers?
Coryo: Well, I was thinking about asking you guys what you want to eat because Sejanus said that we could order takeouts today.
Dill: What’s a takeout?
Coryo: Basically, you order the food that you want to eat and someone will deliver it here for you.
Lucy Gray: We can order anything?!
Coryo: Anything. My boyfriend is rich AF.
Sejanus: Order what you want, Coryo, my love, my Snow Angel!😍
Coryo: See. I told you he’ll pay for it.
Tanner: Must be nice to be Plinth’s sugar baby-
Coryo: Boyfriend.

Sejanus: How about you, Marcus?
Marcus: I’m on diet.

a cowboy and a capitol girl → tanner
Tumblr media
tanner!tbosas x reader
notes → in which you find it a struggle to connect with your tribute, too distracted by his charm. this was supposed to be a request fill but i got too off track, sorry 😭
warnings → not edited & uploaded via iphone. 2k+ words
you had been taking an early walk, hours before you were required to get ready for school, when you saw your classmate, coriolanus, already dressed in his uniform, a white rose in hand. he was walking with purpose, a pep in his step as if he had somewhere to be this early in the day. there was something odd about it, and before you could stop yourself, your feet were carrying you to him.
“coryo!” you called out, running to close the gap between the two of you. the boy stopped, shocked that someone he knew was up early enough to see him. it was clear he wasn’t expecting it, as he tensed up, putting on a faux smile for you. “where are you going this early?” you pushed, squinting your eyes at him skeptically. he opened his mouth to answer, but you cut him off. “and what’s with the rose?”
“well, y/n, i was planning to meet my tribute when she arrives at the train station.” he answered, truthfully, to your surprise. it was quite a clever idea. you recalled coriolanus’ tribute, the small girl from district twelve who sang a song after shoving a snake down a girl’s dress. her voice was quite haunting, if you were being honest with yourself, but you were almost certain she was a psychopath. that was useless to her here, though. she could do no harm given her small frame, and she was no match for the other tributes.
“may i join you?” you asked politely, even though you intended to do so despite whatever his answer was. you had been intrigued by your tribute ever since he was assigned to you, even taking this walk to brainstorm strategy, and you were eager to finally meet him. coriolanus obviously wanted to object, but you came from a very powerful family who’s bad side he did not want to be on. not to mention, you could help him persuade the peacekeepers if he was forced to, so he agreed. you kept a steady pace with him as you made your way to the station, walking inside the building hurriedly. the early morning breeze made you shiver, and you realized how inconveniently you were dressed. you were clothed just in your pajamas as well as a fleece cardigan with your family crest plastered on the back that didn’t offer much protection from the wind.
you must’ve been waiting there for a couple of hours. at this point, you opted to just sit down, leaning back against a metal post in the spacious station. you had already informed a peacekeeper to contact your mother and let her know where you were, and within the next half hour your driver arrived with your school bag and uniform. you quickly changed in the back of the spacious vehicle, digging through your bag for the small hairbrush you kept and brushing the tangles out of your hair. you were worried that the tributes would arrive as you were getting ready, but thankfully, you scrambled back into the station just as the whistle that signaled a train’s arrival blew. your brows furrowed in confusion as you saw coriolanus turning around, preparing to leave.
“what’s wrong?” you asked the boy, placing your hand on his bicep to prevent him from walking away further.
“it’s a cargo train, the tributes aren’t here. we might as well go home,” he informed you, continuing to leave before a distinctly human cry came from one of the carts. almost immediately, he turned around, walking closer to the train, you right beside him.
“there’s no way…” you muttered, in disbelief that they couldn’t even provide the tributes with decent transportation before they sent them to their death. really, you shouldn’t have been all that surprised, considering the capitol’s track record. typically, you would not put something like this above them, but it felt so surreal knowing that your tribute was in one of those carts. twenty minutes had passed of you and coriolanus sitting anxiously in silence, waiting for peacekeepers to unlock the carts and let the tributes out. you had half a mind to demand them to do so, but you decided against it with a protest from coriolanus. finally, a few peacekeepers sauntered to the train, taking their time as they opened the carts one by one. the stench of manure reeked from the carts, and you gagged as the scent filled your nostrils. nothing could’ve prepared you for seeing the tributes in person, especially in the conditions they were in. coriolanus’ tribute, lucy gray, emerged from the second cart, and he became preoccupied with the girl. as patiently as you could, you waited as the peacekeepers opened the third cart, threatening the tributes to come out.
your eyes lit up as you saw tanner for the first time in person. his back was turned to you, but you recognized the outfit he had worn during the reaping. nervousness crept up on you as you debated approaching him, but that was the whole reason you joined coriolanus, and you didn’t want to have waited multiple hours for nothing.
“tanner?” you called, catching his attention, as well as the few tributes around the boy. he sized you up with a menacing glare as you took a hesitant step closer to him. “i’m y/n, i’ll be your mentor.” your eyes darted up to peer into his as you stuck your hand out. he didn’t take it, leaving you slightly flushed from embarrassment. “well.. welcome to the capitol!” was the best you could do, trying to keep your cool.
“a real warm welcome alright. your peacekeepers yanked my district partner out of the cart by her hair.” tanner scorned distastefully.
“woah, woah, woah, who did?” you asked, tone growing concerned as your hand instinctively reached for his arm. he nodded his head in the direction of a younger peacekeeper, and you excused yourself, striding over to the man. “sir, pray tell, what does peacekeeper mean?” you demanded, stealing the man’s attention.
“miss l/n, oh wow.. uhm, to keep peace in panem, ma’am.” he answered, surprised by your presence. it was not a shock that he knew your face, your family had been well known in the capitol for many generations.
“right. and is pulling a girl by her hair keeping peace, officer?” you queried rhetorically. the man shook his head shamefully. “so, to make things clear, you weren’t doing your job correctly? i’d go as far to say that you were doing the opposite,” the man shook his head once more. “than i will see to it that you will no longer be employed. hell, you may never be employed again if it was in my wishes,” you remarked, promptly walking back towards tanner, whose face held a look of astonishment.
“damn, i didn’t think you had that in you,” tanner mused, a southern drawl peeking out, giving him an alluring charm. you smiled, glad that he seemed to be warming up to you.
“right, so.. as your mentor, i’m supposed to help you win the games, and introduce you to the capitol,” you explained in another attempt to get him to trust you.
“how so?” he simply asked, scanning your eyes for any sign of deception, which he didn’t find.
“well…” you thought long and hard hard for an answer, but came out empty handed. the boy laughed, and although it was directed towards you, you couldn’t help but think his laugh attractive. “i’m currently trying to figure that out. that’s why i came to greet you here! i really wanted to meet you, y’know.” the comment seemed a little too flirtatious as it escaped your mouth, and you cringed as tanner raised his eyebrows.
“yea?” he teased, smiling slightly at your embarrassment. you nodded hesitantly, just to see how he would take the comment. tanner was amused, it was evident, but you weren’t sure that it would be enough to win his trust. from what you had gained, flattery could possibly be the way to his heart, and you decided to continue further down that path.
“mhm, you were real handsome on camera. it won’t be hard to get the capitol to like you. you could win, too. easily, given your physique.” you complimented, just to see how far adulation could take you, and partially because you meant it. sure, it was over the top, but you would gladly take on the role of a sycophant if it meant tanner would cooperate with you.
“well, you’re not too bad yourself, cutie,” the boy shot right back at you, causing you to stutter as you processed his statement. blood rushed to your face as you tried to brainstorm something to say. peacekeepers beat you to it, though, herding the tributes to a van near the entrance of the train. tanner was whisked away, the gap between the two of you growing by the second, and you stood next to coriolanus, slumped. your chance had slipped out of your grasp, and you were more than embarrassed as you realized you had wasted your time flirting with tanner. coriolanus was inquiring a peacekeeper about something you weren’t paying attention to, instead staring longingly at tanner’s shrinking figure climbing into the truck, disappearing from your line of sight, and suddenly coriolanus had grabbed your wrist, pulling you along with him.
“let’s go, y/n” he said, following the path the tributes had taken to the entrance of the station. “we’re going with ‘em.” the truck heavily resembled a cage on wheels, reminding you of what they had used to transport circus animals before the rebellion. coriolanus hoisted himself into the cage, hauling you in after him. the door slammed shut behind you, making you jump. coriolanus took you to the front of the truck with him, eyeing the tributes apprehensively.
“what’s the matter, pretty boy? you in the wrong cage?” said the boy from district eleven, reaper, if you had remembered correctly.
“no, this cage is delightful.” coriolanus remarked. reaper surged forward, hands encircling coriolanus’ throat, you tried to back up, shocked, but instead fell into the lap of a tribute, brandy. tanner’s district partner. you were unable to pick yourself back up in the cramped car, forcing you to remain, stuck, head pushed against her knees.
“i will kill you right now,” reaper threatened, inches away from coriolanus’ face.
“he’ll do it too,” reaper’s district partner, dill, coughed out. “reaper killed a peacekeeper back in eleven. they never even found out who did it.” reaper growled at the girl to shut up. “who cares now?” dill hopelessly whispered.
“i say we all kill ‘em,” spoke up bobbin, the boy from eight, viciously.
“i’m in,” brandy mocked, glaring down at you with malicious intent. you gave coriolanus a look, both of you rigid with fear.
“oh, hush, brandy. she’s the one who helped you earlier, remember? got that peacekeeper who pulled you out fired. we’re not killing her,” tanner reprimanded his partner condescendingly. he was stationed nearby the girl, grabbing your hand to help you up and pulling you towards him. the contact seemed to make the rest of the world stop, leaving just you and your tribute. there was discourse occurring between the rest of the tributes, but it was simply background noise to you. it seemed only like a brief moment, but it was quickly crushed as suddenly, the cage tipped, dropping you down a chute nearly twenty feet. you landed in a heap on the floor, a pained groan escaping your lips. rock formations towered around you, and upon squinting up at your surroundings, you saw that a crowd was formed outside the bars enclosing you. you were in a cage, but not just any cage. the monkey house at the zoo.
you took notice of the capital children that were gawking in at the lot of you. lucky flickerman’s voice, which you could recognize anywhere, boomed as he spoke into his microphone. standing up slowly, you caught your breath, locating coriolanus, as well as tanner. some of the citizens must have recognized you, calling out into the cage and alerting lucky, who asked why the two of you were in there. you stared at the crowd like a deer in headlights, unconsciously inching towards tanner, who was a foot to your left. he was looking at you expectantly, curious as to why you weren’t already begging to be rescued. coriolanus had already taken quick action, though, guiding lucy gray to the front of the exhibit and interacting with the children that stood there. you groaned in frustration as you realized that he had gotten a one up on you, already stealing the camera man’s attention. his demonstration was being aired to all of panem while you merely stood in the background.
“is that what you’re supposed to be doing?” tanner asked, nudging you with his elbow.
“yep,” you deadpanned. it had been a waste of time to go to the train station, you had gotten virtually nowhere in your assignment, instead embarrassing yourself in front of not only your tribute, but all of panem. “i’m sorry for bothering you, tanner. i just wanted you to warm up to me, that’s all.”
“hey, don’t beat yourself up over it,” tanner tried, brushing your arm. you were delightfully shocked that he had made an attempt to reassure you. maybe your journey to the station had been more fruitful than you believed.
“thanks, tanner,” you muttered, but peacekeepers soon stormed into the enclosure, striding towards you. looking between the peacekeepers and tanner, you almost didn’t want to leave, deeming him as the much better option. but it was too late for you as a peacekeeper wrapped a hand around your wrist, leading you away.
“will you be back later?” tanner called out for you, genuine interest in his tone.
“of course,” you smiled as you were being pulled away, and he offered you a small smile in return. you would undoubtedly be looking forward to seeing him again.

Have you seen the prequel movie? If yes🌹>>>
A. In your opinion, please rate TBOSAS movie with 1-10 scale.
(1 = I hate it, 10 = I love it.)
Things that you like :
Things that you don't like :
B. For people who also read the novel.
Your opinions about the difference between the book and the movie :
Thank you 🎼
@curiousnonny
Thank you so much for the ask!! Yes, I have seen the movie (twice lol). On a scale of 1-10, I'd rate TBOSAS as a 9, because a 10 to me would be a 1 to 1 recreation of the book. Compared to the rest of the film adaptations we have, this is the best one by far. I'll start off by breaking down the things that I liked most about the movie.
Let's start off first and foremost, Francis Lawerence was determined to fit everything cleanly into one movie. While most of us know that there was more than enough material to warrant two movies, if that happened, I believe that it would have suffered the same fate as Mockingjay Pt. 1 & 2. This is what he said during an interview that I think sums this idea up well:
"In an episode of television, if you have a cliffhanger, you have to wait a week or you could just binge it and then you can see the next episode. But making people wait a year, I think, came across as disingenuous, even though it wasn’t. Our intentions were not to be disingenuous." - Variety
So, would it have made more money in the long run? Sure. But would it make the fans happy? Probably not. Both he and Suzanne aren't just in it for the money. They want to both make something they're proud of, and something they know the fans will enjoy and I think that really shows.
Another great example of how they listen to the opinions of their fans is shown in their casting choices.
Back in 2012 when the movies first started being released, there was a lot of public outcry about not giving accurate representation to the characters in the books.
Listen, as much as I love JLaw, her personality, her acting ability, and the beautiful way she brought Katniss to life, she doesn’t look like Katniss as was described in the book. Suzanne is very intentional with the information she gives us. Katniss is a hunter, living in the Appalachian area, and has "straight black hair, olive skin, and grey eyes"; Katniss is coded as Native. Jennifer is not.
This can also be expanded into the representation of District 12 as a whole. While we're watching the events of the Reaping take place, nearly everyone in that crowd is white. If most of the people living in the district live in the Seam and look like Katniss, then where are they? Why do they all look like merchant children?
So, with that all being said, I am very glad that this time around they had a more diverse cast.
Here are the things that I picked up on myself: Clemensia is Asian, Coral was queer-coded, Bobbin was missing an arm, Tanner was missing an eye, Wovey had down syndrome and, Tigris is played by a trans actress (and was a huge fan of the original series growing up). I'm aware that there is probably a lot more I missed out on, but those are just the ones I picked up on on my own.
Another bit I loved was the character outfit choices.
Snow wore different colored roses to signify his mindset at different points in time. He wore a red rose during the reaping ceremony, red roses signifying passion and pride as he thinks he’s about to win the Plinth prize. When we see him at the train station he gives Lucy Gray a white rose, which signifies loyalty, purity, and innocence, as are his views towards her and the Games thus far. Then, during the start of the games he wears a yellow rose, which signifies friendship and luck, which represents how he feels about Lucy Gray.
Another thing that really stood out to me was the choice of character design. Of course, most of the attention is going to the Academy uniforms, and Lucy Gray’s reaping dress, but there’s so much more that we can pick up on if we look closely.
It was mentioned a TikTok, going over Tigris’s outfits, that the designer intentionally gave all of her outfits some kind of unfinished hem, as if she was still a work in progress. (I can’t find the original TikTok anywhere, I believe it was posted by Lionsgate, but it’s no longer there)
And Dr. Gaul’s outfits are phenomenal. I would say my piece about it here, but Leftie said it so much better than I could say it myself, so I will link it for you here: TikTok
Then, when it comes to the tributes, each tribute looked like they were all coming from the poor districts, but they all had something unique about them. Coral had a fish on her flannel representing District 4, fishing, Wovey had an outfit covered in buttons on her shoulders, and had a heart made of buttons on her pants representing District 8, textiles,
There are also many things I liked about the little callbacks to the original trilogy, but don't have enough to say on it to write them their own paragraphs, so I will list them below.
The long shot on the bow and arrows on the Cornucopia, sitting and waiting to be used, because no one there is ready to take the first shot.
Lucky canceling his dinner reservations. “Two and a highchair”, I wonder who that highchair is for.
The mention of Katniss and being too early in the season. Need I say more?
I think these were all great choices because anyone who has been a fan of the series will know what they were trying to tell us, but it also blends in so well with the rest of the movie. I have no doubt in my mind that those who watched this movie as their first introduction to the series didn’t think any of those moments were out of place.
Now we’ll move on to the things I didn’t like, and honestly, I’m glad to say I don’t have many, so I will list them below:
Why is District 12 still so white? If the Seam is a large part of the population then why is everyone so gosh darn pale? Where are the people living in the Seam that all looked like Katniss and Lucy Gray??
Where is Clemmy?? I really wanted to see her act like a snake.
Where is Ma Plinth? She is such a huge character in the book and yet we don’t even see her face in the movie.
The interview between Lucky and Lucy Gray while at the zoo felt too fast, could I tell you how to do it better? No. But I do think that the pacing of it was a bit weird.
I really wish we saw a mockingjay pin somewhere, that would have been a nice call back.
The overall pace of the first half of the movie. They did really well getting in the stuff they did, but so much happened in the books that it felt like we were jumping around quite a bit trying to show us all the things that were necessary for the story.
Lack of Snow's inner dialogue. I understand why it wasn't included, but it really adds so much depth to his character that without it he just appears...normal. (Listen you can think Tom is hot all you want, but babe, respectfully, if you still think Snow is smashable after the movie ends I will personally give you my therapist's contact info)
For those who didn’t read the book, but watched the movie, I will leave you with this.
Snow is a sociopath. He doesn’t care about anyone but himself. He is hot and evil. That’s how it's supposed to be.
No, Snow and Sejanus didn’t kiss in the book either, I’m sorry.
Read the books. It brings so much more light and depth into the characters that you literally cannot do in any movie.
Listen to the audiobook. If you think reading the book will bring the characters to life, then this will make them feel like you know them personally. It's voiced by Santino Fontana (aka Hans from Frozen) and he adds so much to the story, minus the singing. You would think they would let a man who can sing sing the songs, but they don’t. I think it’s cause they’re scared of the edits we would create. (Btw, don’t support amazon by listening to it on audible. You can listen to it for free by either supporting your local library by using Libby or by listening to it on youtube)
Lastly, I’ll leave you with some things I'm hoping we will get to see at some point in the future.
Another book. I really hope Suzanne comes back with another addition to the series at some point. I know she only writes when she has something to say, so if she does, I'm really excited to see what she might come up with.
A TV series adaptation. Diverse and inclusive cast. One episode per chapter. One season per book. One bonus season where each episode goes over the games of previous victors. I would love to see Mags, Haymitch, Johanna, and Finnick’s games.
The extended cut. There is a 3hr 40min cut of the movie that we almost got, but didn’t, and I need to see it. There's currently a live change.org petition urging Lionsgate to release it. As of writing this, it has just over 12k signatures. If you're interested you can sign it here.
More interviews with Suzanne. Even if she doesn’t write any more books I really just want to hear more about what goes on in her head.
More people joining the HG community. It’s been a special interest of mine ever since the movies were first announced, so I’m super happy that it’s picking up steam and getting attention again!

naming in songbirds and snakes
authors note: it is 1 am and this is unbataed, apologies for any spelling or grammar errors.
the hunger games is known for its outrageous, futuristic names; one of my favorite pieces of the series. this post does a beautiful job analyzing the names that appear in the original trilogy and categorizing them into 4 different categories. but that post is a little old and we’ve just recently got a lot more content (and names) to pick apart and analyze.
researching these names reminds me how everything suzanne includes in her novels is intentional. she doesn’t pick random names because they sound good but because they mean something. i think that’s important to remember while reading this series. it’s definitely something i will keep in mind during my next reread of the trilogy.
i didn’t cover every name in tbosas. if there’s a name you have thoughts about, reblog and let me know.
potential tbosas spoilers and long post under the cut
names will be divided into capitol and tribute (district) names
capitol
capitol names take many influences from ancient roman and greek names, but they also tell the story of the character. i will only be discussing major characters, not all will be mentioned.
coriolanus: snow’s first name largely has to do with his story. from the play coriolanus by shakespeare, meaning “conqueror of corioli,” a heroic roman solider, caius marcius, gains his name from a victory at corioli. when he leads the attack on corioli, it does not go well. but he keeps fighting and returns to rome victorious. he brings glory to rome and his mother volumnia. basically summing up his whole story. he tries to lead an ‘attack’ (him trying to win the games) but that fails. he’s reduced to a peacekeeper but he still doesn’t stop trying to be something greater. he wins in the end. he goes back to the capitol, attends university and is mentored dr. gaul.
which brings me to...
dr. volumnia gaul: dr. gaul’s name has two parts. one representing her relationship with snow. the other representing her relationship with panem. volumnia is the mother of caius marcus in shakespeare’s play, coriolanus. volumnia, in the play, uses caius as a means of securing personal prestige aka using snow’s ideas in her games. she wants her games to be better, the best. and she uses snow for that. gaul was also a roman province that embarrassed rome (read: gual’s games not being popular, things going wrong, etc.). but unlike gual, dr. gual was not stop/conquered by panem/rome.
sejanus plinth: sejanus was a close friend and ally of roman emperor tiberius who worked to improve conditions for the empire. he was also strangled to death. sejanus plinth was unable to change anything before his death by hanging. a plinth can be looked at in two different ways. @hutchhitched described it as a platform—a place someone can take a stand and deliver a message. it can also be looked at as a means for climbing. social climbing, if you will. the main ambition of the plinths.
strabo plinth: a wealthy philosopher who allied with the romans and was granted roman citizenship as a reward. seems familiar? plinth: see sejanus.
crassus snow: crassus was a roman general who played a key role in the transformation of the roman republic into the roman empire. just like his namesake, crassus snow was known for his military experience and wrote the proposal for the hunger games, successfully transforming panem into what we know today.
tributes
typically, tributes have names that reflect the industry of their district. there are a few exceptions to this; including sabine, ginnee, jessup and lucy gray baird.
district one
one of the wealthier districts in panem, district one is responsible for producing luxury items, such as jewelry, for the capitol.
male tribute: facet, literally meaning “one side of something many-sided, especially of a cut gem” suggest gemstone that is placed into jewelry but he is merely a part of the captiols larger plan.
female tribute: velvereen, derived from velveteen, meaning “a cotton fabric with a pile resembling velvet.”
district two
another wealthy district, district two is the home of the nation’s quarries and masonry workers. also recruits and trains peacekeepers and produces weapons for their use.
male tribute: marcus, derived from malleus, latin meaning “hammer.” the main tool of a masonry worker.
female tribute: sabyn, derived from sabine, italic tribe located near the tiber river. captured and raped by the romans. parallel to her current situation of being captured by the capitol.
district three
one of the poorer districrs. responsible for technology, district theee manufactures televisions, computers and other electronics. citizens of this district are very adept at engineering.
male tribute: circ, derived from circuit, something which an electric current can flow; used in electronics.
female tribute: teslee, possibly derived from tesla, an inventor and engineer.
district four
it’s major industry is fishing, trains citizens at a young age for their industry.
male tribute: mizzen, literally a part of a ships mast aka ships used for fishing.
female tribute: coral, do i have to explain this one? marine invertebrates that live in the ocean.
district five
it’s main industry is power and electricity.
male tribute: hy, possibly derived from hydroelectric, alluding to the hydroelectric dam that produces power for panem.
female tribute: sol, derived from solis, latin for sun. another producer of power.
district six
responsible for transportation.
male tribute: otto, variation of auto derived from automobile. a form of transportation
female tribute: ginnee, meaning “pure” a reminder that these are innocent children.
district seven
main industry is lumber
male tribute: treech, possibly a styilization of tree, the source of lumber
female tribute: lamina, the blade of a leaf, something trees have ;)
district eight
the textile makers
male tribute: bobbin, a spindle which thread is wound. typically found on sewing machines
female tribute: wovey, possibly derived from woven because textiles are, woven.
district nine
responsible for grain production
male tribute: panlo, derived from pan, meaning bread in spanish. bread is made from grain.
female tribute: sheaf, literally meaning “a bundle of grain stalks.”
district ten
the cattle ranchers of panem
male tribute: tanner, from the verb to tan, meaning “convert animal skin into leather”
female tribute: brandy, a brand is “an identifying mark burned on livestock”
district eleven
agriculture!
male tribute: reaper, to reap, meaning “to cut or gather a crop or harvest”
female tribute: dill, an herb. that you grow
district twelve
the coal miners
male tribute: jessup, derived from hebrew “yosef.” interestingly this is only the second name derived from hebrew within thg. second to johanna. could also be a reference to jessup, nevada; a mining area.
female tribute: lucy grey baird, she explains her own name. baird meaning poet or minstrel.

Dating Coral headcannons!
Divider made by: @cafekitsune on tumblr
Tumblr media
Before the hunger games set back in D4
Coral would SO be an overprotective girlfriend
Corals' love language is definitely touch. One could describe her need to have something touching you as an addiction
She adores holding your hand, having some part of her just touching you in some way, small kisses and things like that
She's not much of a sweet talker, though she will flirt with you from time to time
She's definitely taken you out to watch her fish showing off her raw strength
She LOVES to run her fingers through your hair no matter the lengths as long as she's touching you
Coral would SO flirt with you whilst you two are in the middle of an argument smirking and all when it catches you off guard
She is definitely the jealous type. She thought she's not insecure about your relationship, no, not at all. She just perfers if you stuck near her
Coral would adore your siblings if you had any, especially if they were your younger siblings since she's (I believe) an older sister herself
You definitely had at least once gotten her to walk with you on the beach. Like in those romance books that she so despises, she would have complained the whole time but secretly loved it as it was just her, you snd the ocean
Coral would have given you her jacket if she noticed you didn't have one and eventually you'd have a pile of just her jackets in your room since she refuses to take them back using an excuse like "keep em' they look better on you anyways"
Yes, you two have definitely gotten into arguments over her being protective of you, mainly just her scaring away your friends, your two personalitys clashing at times
Your friends have told you to leave coral at times when your arguments are no longer small petty ones, but you'd always tell them to buzz off they just didn't understand coral the way you did
I dont see coral as one of those people who are fans of pet names, but I could see her liking to call you 'darling or gorgeous' nothing special
Tumblr media
During the hunger games
If you two just so happened to be in the hunger games, I feel she wouldn't be as gentle as before putting up a tough exterior, not that she would be cruel to you she would definitely be kinder to you than anyone else
Coral is not the nicest person during the game's, so when you're looking all checking out, the arena coral would have demanded you came over to her, forcing you to join her little group
She needed to have you in her view or at least near her most of the time in the arena, she didn't quite trust any of her members in the pack but if she really needed you to go looking with the other two she would send you off with treech not trusting tanner enough to not try something when she wasn't there
Coral would share her food with you even if you had gotten food from doing stunts in the cage she still would split her food with you making sure you ate enough
Coral would isolate you from the other tributes
Whether she was just being possessive or her just being cautious, she would be mad if you just started talking to other tributes, especially lucy Gray baird. Oh, that one would make her blood boil, seeing you two getting along in front of her.
She would have yelled at you to get back to her side, giving you the cold shoulder for a bit, glaring daggers into lucy grays head
If you just so happend to not get selected with coral, you would boost her need to survive and win the game, making her a little bit more 'bloodthirsty' and ruthless
Tumblr media
Well, that's it for now. I'm still writing Tanner, Lamina, and treechs. I just haven't had much free time recently, sorry! I did enjoy writing this. Please do tell if there are spelling mistakes!

better in the dark → coral
Tumblr media
coral!tbosas x reader
a/n → i have the feeling that my writing has been getting progressively worse (it’s getting short and sloppy + my grammar is slipping) because i’ve been trying to write so much all at once lol so i maybe just maybe will take a short break before posting anything else
notes → in which you savor some of the last moments you will have with coral before the games, even though you can hardly see her. feminine intended reader
warnings → possibly the WORST thing i’ve written (but i still want you to read it lol), sorry guys, inspo is low at the moment. very very ooc coral in my opinion. not edited & uploaded via iphone
coral’s hands brushed yours as she reached them through the bars. you allowed her to grab onto them, shivering at her icy touch. even though it was the middle of a rather hot summer, nights still grew chilly.
“we’ll meet again tomorrow morning to have a final goodbye.“ you informed her in a whine, she hummed in response. for some reason, saying it out loud hurt. but the ache in your heart seemed to waver as coral reached a hand up to cup your face, causing you to look her in the eyes for the first time tonight. you were afraid that if you made eye contact with her you wouldn’t be able to let her go, but it was too late now. mentally, you cursed yourself for how fast you got attached to people. in the two weeks that coral had been in the capitol, you were sure you had fallen in love with her. and maybe you had been looking at her through rose colored glasses, but even then, rose colored glasses had no effect in the dark night. deep down you knew you had fallen for her.
no matter how much time you spent preparing her, there was no guarantee that she would win the games. out of the other girls, sure, she was one of the strongest. but the guys were what you worried about. reaper and tanner posed a huge threat to the girl, but coral assured you that she could handle it. not to mention jessup, who was easily the biggest and strongest tribute of them all. your mind was working overtime as you brainstormed all of the different ways she could win, and the possibilities of her being killed. you were so focused that you hadn’t realized you were biting your lip, almost to the point of drawing blood. it wasn’t until coral began gliding her thumb over your knuckles that you were taken out of your trance.
“what’s wrong?” she asked you, mildly concerned.
“just… thinking about what could happen out there.” you admitted, eyes softening.
“i told you already, baby, don’t you worry about me. i’ve got it covered.” she smiled reassuringly at you, though you could hardly tell because of how dimly lit it had become now. it was almost like the moon was hiding from you. you felt as if she was far too calm for someone in her situation, it irked you. while you had been beyond anxious all day on behalf of coral, here she was, all mellow in the face of death. maybe it was just a facade on coral’s part, but you felt helpless at the fact that you didn’t know how to properly help her.
“but coral, i’m your mentor!” you reminded her, as well as yourself. bringing up your status reminded you that falling in love with a district tribute would be more than looked down upon in your society. “it’s my job to worry about you-“ you stated, but were cut off as she pulled you closer to her, pressing her lips to yours. you melted into her touch, unable to stop yourself from leaning in closer. but sadly, the kiss seemed to end as soon as it started.
“that shut you up,” she teased, smirking.
“you can’t just… you can’t just do that!” you complained in a huff, pouting.
“you won’t allow a dead woman one last kiss? you monster!” coral joked, chuckling silently.
“don’t say that either, coral. you’re not going to die.” it seemed more like a bitter attempt to convince yourself rather than coral. besides, you were supposed to be the cynical one here, not her. but then again, she had every right to feel that way. when twenty-four go in and only one comes out, it was easy to feel hopeless. who were you to dictate how she felt? you felt like a terrible, entitled person, and maybe you were. but coral seemed to look past that. you avoided her eyes once more, looking down at your shoes instead in guilt.
“i’m just joking, pretty girl.” she remarked, but her tone seemed more solemn now. your eyes wandered back to hers. silence hung in the air as a few moments passed.
“is it bad that i might love you?” the question slipped from your mouth in a single breath.
“yes,” was her grim reply. it broke your heart to hear, even if she was probably right. but that didn’t stop her from pulling you close once more, pressing her lips against yours passionately. thank goodness for the dark. if she had seen you in this moment with your nose runny, puffy, red eyes from crying so much, and cheeks flushed, you were sure you would die of embarrassment. but all your emotions seemed to flutter away when she was this close to you now. when her lips were on yours, nothing in the past, present, or future mattered, it was just coral and you.
