I have struggled with serious period pains for 20 years.
The first "proper" day of my period, I had pain that made me cry, pain I would be woken up by, pain that made it impossible to function.
For a long time, all that helped was naproxen, which in the UK was prescription only or in feminax ultra. It seems that the naproxen based feminax has been discontinued, probably because it was a prescription medication you could just buy... So I was starting to think I was going to need to go to my GP to get it when I ran out. Naproxen, while an amazing pain killer, has long term side effects including heart disease and stomach ulcers. I knew it wasn't a great idea to rely on it every month, but nothing else even took the edge off of the pain.
I don't think my pain was as bad as some women's (it was only ever the first couple of days, and sometimes mittlelschmerz) but it did lead to me missing school or work, and regular paracetamol or ibuprofen never helped much.
And then, a couple of months ago, my friend lent me this. It's not a medical device, it's a sex toy, designed to give you electric shocks.

And it has changed my fucking life. I stick two little pads on my tummy and using the basic vibrating electric setting, suddenly I can function.
I still have pain, but it's no longer making me cry, making me pass out, I am free from needing to regulate and manage eating, ibuprofen and paracetamol in cycles that won't mess me up or kill me. Last month I even slept with it on (that might have been a slightly mad idea and I don't necessarily recommend it).
The electric shocks can feel sharp on my skin sometimes, but it's like my muscles are so ever stimulated that the period cramps can't compete, like they're disrupted, rather than stopped.
I'm now looking into a proper TENS machine, but in the short term, this is something I never thought would make such a difference.
I would be interested to know if other women have tried similar.

Today in PT my therapist was like “I want to do electrotherapy for these muscles, but since they’re hidden deep beneath other muscles, the normal gel pads won’t work. So if you’re up for it, I’d like to use dry needle electrotherapy, which would be placing two acupuncture needles at the right depth and connecting them to the TENS unit”
and I was like “so basically, a very gentle, therapeutic Taser”
she was like “I GUESS”

16, inner thigh~
mmm thank you for this suggestion ~
I really like this setting, it feels kinda prickly bc it's a bunch of quick zaps but slow enough I can feel the "space" between em. apparently it's one of the "scraping" modes. my legs feel so tense with the pads on my inner thighs~
I'm experimenting with "high enough it hurts" vs "just high enough I don't notice the hurt until several minutes in"

*uses tens unit on my lower back*
Woah, that feels so much better.
*starts to feel the other aches in body more bc my lower back is no longer screaming*
…I’m going to need better and bigger unit pads. But so far enjoying it.

I got the Techcare professional massager tens unit and it was a little tricky to get the hang of but I was able to figure out how to change the settings pretty quickly. It tingles and it hurts if I turn it up too much but keeping it on a lower setting feels nice. I'll have to see what its like on my knees
