Higurashi: Time Killing Chapter 5

It's the first chapter of a new volume and it opens with a reminder that the true mystery going forward is figuring out who will kill Rika.

After several days, anyone would suffer nightmares about their kidnappers. Of course Toshiki sees that one guy as a monster in human skin.

And the big climax to the kidnapping plot comes about because of mere chance. The police didn't actually find anything, Ooishi just happened to notice a car parked next to a building he knows should be empty.

For once, Detective Delicious Ooishi is fighting someone his size.

The sheer difference an ambush can cause someone. This arc opened with Akasaka throwing an adult man over his shoulder but he spends most of his fight with goon #2 on the ground grabbing his leg.

I think this is the first time Yukie was shown with her eyes open.

Once Akasaka was able to get back on his feet, he took out goon #2 with the same move he took out that one guy in chapter 1.

And I guess this is why Detective Delicious Ooishi only fights kids these days. He lost to Goon #1.

Spoiler Discussion

We're never told who was behind the kidnapping but there's enough detail on a reread to figure it out.

The guy who fought Ooishi is Tetsurou Okonogi. He plays a prominent antagonist role in the final arc as the leader of the Mountain Dogs, which are the enforcers behind an organization code-named 'Tokyo'. In fact, he says the message he got is from Tokyo. So they're the actual culprits behind the kidnapping.

At this point, Takano and Irie are already working as medical professionals in Hinamizawa, so research into Hinamizawa Syndrome is already underway. The construction of the Dam would essentially end the entire research endeavor. So the kidnapping was done to force the dam construction to end.

Here are the critical points of my ideal timeline for the When They Cry entries Higurashi and Umineko:

Miyoko Tanashi never loses her parents in an accident and gets sent to an orphanage thus never becoming Miyo Takano.

The director of the orphanage Miyoko is sent to in the prime timeline dies before he can found it.

Tetsurou Okonogi and Nomura both die in the line of duty before they can found or join the Tokyo organization.

Rena Ryuugu parts on more amicable terms with her mother Reiko but never leaves Hinamizawa.

Dr. Hifumi Takano turns his attention elsewhere and eventually retires.

The Japanese government still takes some interest in Hinamizawa but never truly finds any support.

Hinamizawa is never set up to be demolished over flood concerns.

Satoko and Satoshi Hojo’s (step)parents never get involved with the plans to build a dam around Hinamizawa and fall to their deaths.

Teppei Hojo and Tamae Hojo both die of old age before they have the chance to get involved in Satoko and Satoshi’s lives.

Rina Mamiya is killed for trying to scam Mion and Shion’s family before she can get involved in Rena’s life.

Rika Furude still grows up to be kind and with her parents alive.

Keiichi Maebara and his parents still move to Hinamizawa.

Mion and Shion Sonozaki reconcile and confront their family to straighten things out.

Japan’s leadership loses interest in developing a bioweapon and is never convinced to authorize the decimation of Hinamizawa.

Any other conflicts, including those regarding the Ushiromiya family are resolved peacefully meaning the deaths at Rokkenjima never have any reason to occur.
