Strongman rule is a fantasy.  Essential to it is the idea that a strongman will be your strongman.  He won't.  In a democracy, elected representatives listen to constituents.  We take this for granted, and imagine that a dictator would owe us something. But the vote you cast for him affirms your irrelevance.  The whole point is that the strongman owes us nothing.  We get abused and we get used to it. 

Another pleasant illusion is that the strongman will unite the nation.  But an aspiring dictator will always claim that some belong and others don't.  He will define one group after another as the enemy.  This might feel good, so long as you feel that you are on the right side of the line.  But now fear is the essence of life.  The politics of us-and-them, once begun, never ends. 

We dream that a strongman will let us focus on America.  But dictatorship opens our country to the worst the world has to offer.  An American strongman will measure himself by the wealth and power of other dictators.  He will befriend them and compete with them.  From them he will learn new ways to oppress and to exploit his own people.

At least, the fantasy goes, the strongman will get things done.  But dictatorial power today is not about achieving anything positive.  It is about preventing anyone else from achieving anything.  The strongman is really the weak man: his secret is that he makes everyone else weaker. 

Unaccountable to the law and to voters, the dictator has no reason to consider anything beyond his own personal interests.  In the twenty-first century, those are simple: dying in bed as a billionaire.  To enrich himself and to stay out of prison, the strongman dismantles the justice system and replaces civil servants with loyalists.

Please, spill some tea on Al’s relationships. 😭 Someone on quora has said Diane is painting herself as the victim while we don’t know his perspective, that she is the one who never had a long term and stable relationship while her exes went on to have their own families. And I’m like… dude… Al Pacino has kids but he sure hasn’t had a stable relationship with anyone, lol.

Diane said on the Ellen show she had quite a few relationships that lasted "about 5 years". She also said no man she ever dated proposed to her, which is why she didn't end up married. I actually ended up finding out that Warren Beatty did in fact propose to Diane but she said no. I found on this article a reason why, which is Diane wanting to focus on her career, but I can't find the original source I read it on which didn't state a reason--just simply that Diane didn't want to marry him. I read that this happened during the filming of a movie they had together and as a result, Warren made Diane rehearse a scene (or something) again and again on purpose to take his frustration out on her. Again, don't know if this is true or not, just what I read!

Also, to assume that someone hasn't had stable relationships because they never married or have children is such utter bullshit.

Y'all wanna talk about unstable relationships? Let's talk about Al Pacino real quick. 😂

Al's first mentioned gf was Jill Clayburgh, an actress and I believe they got together around 1967. The broke up a short while after TFG released. Al talked about wanting to marry her and have kids in the future but what did he do? He told her he was in love with another woman and left her just like that.

We know how on and off Al was with Diane and how that one ended. What I still can't find any info on or make sense of is them breaking up in 1990, but no mentions of breakups in 1988 or 1989, but Al having a child in 1989 with someone else? Sheesh.

There was an interview Al and Marthe Keller did together around the Bobby Deerfield days. Marthe was almost describing what kind of wedding/wedding gown she would want to wear. She was saying no pressure on marriage/kids, and the interview described Al as being quiet, awkward and not saying anything. Marthe was head over heels, swooning a whole paragraph about how amazing Al was and he said nothing. All he did was smile awkwardly. They broke up later down the line of course, and Marthe I believe kept one of his mugs he drank out of.

I'd recommend reading "A Life on the Wire" for all the Al relationship tea, let me tell you that. Personally from what I've read in it, "unstable" doesn't even begin to cover it lmfao. Cut Diane some slack, y'all. 😭

kinda pissed there has been absolutely no mention of Blake and TFG theme song? wtf?

I heard two things on this. Both were just reading comments on articles so nothing concrete.

One said the studio heads thought those 80s lyrics rating women’s looks with numbers were problematic (kind of dumb imo because it’s only one line and in the context it’s just supposed to be a guy being cocky). The other said that the song does play at the credits and that it is so good that it is worth staying seated to hear.

I have a link here to a post I made recently briefly covering how I did my thesis but I can go into more depth for you!!

You do a degree in psychology right? I don’t know how that would differ from mine but I asked around and here’s how it works:

Because I did a biomed degree we also had lab based thesis options which is what I went for as the practical experience was great for my masters application. I had quiet a few friends go for essay only projects and here what they did to prepare:

Read - every time, always, look at new research in your field, new studies, explore areas that you covered in lectures that caught your eye and see if there’s still more to discover - there always is

Personal experience - as with most science degrees / healthcare related degrees there’s always some kind of personal element you can link there, my friend wanted to research MS since someone in her family had it etc

Are you planning on further study in a specific field? I knew I wanted to do research in immunology so I went for the project most closely related to it so I could use that as an opportunity to research it more

Brainstorm - if you have several or few ideas make a brainstorm and just write what you know / don’t about each one, you may find that one of these topics leaves you with interesting questions you might want to pursue

Speak to your professors!!! Your professors are experts in their fields, talk to them about ideas that you’ve come up with, if they think there’s enough research out there for you to get good info for your project etc

Speak to your friends - you’ve all studied the same thing for years now, bounce ideas off of each other

Your notes - go back and look at what you’ve learnt. Where are the question marks in the research? Which of these experiments should have had more variables? How would a new demographic change the results you have?

Read read read read read read read read - you don’t have to read the whole article, the opening abstract will be enough to start sparking some ideas

Remember, your thesis isn’t about the results and data you gain, it’s about showing the professors that you are capable of evaluating large sums of information, selecting what is relevant, and drawing logical conclusions from what you’ve read.

Have fun with it, it’s a big project and you’re going to spend a lot of time on it. Make sure your final topic is interesting to you (absolutely does not matter if everyone else thinks it’s boring, this is for you) and make sure you understand at least a few foundational concepts for it. You’re already thinking about it pretty early on so you have plenty of time to bounce around ideas, and never be afraid to run it past your professors for advice, it’s what they get paid for!!

This morning, I was shaken to learn Heather B. Hamilton (formerly Heather Armstrong) aka Dooce is no longer with us. I learned the news from a post to her Instagram, confirmed by several friends after and then the Associated Press, announcing the tragic news that she died yesterday at the age of 47.

I think this caught most of us off guard. Dooce was one of the folks I followed in my early blogging days and was very influential to blogs in general. She wasn’t just a Mommy blogger.

At work, we work in GitHub pull requests that get merged to the main branch. We also have twice-yearly community release branches, and a small fraction of the main-branch changes need to be copied onto the current release branch.

It’s surprising how powerful git is. Ned has put together a great little guide for how one might cherry pick their commits.

There are so many ways to manage code changes and branches. This is one of many and worth your time to read if you’re a developer of software.

Oh, and it has beautiful diagrams to illustrate what he’s talking about. 👨‍🍳💋

This piece is by Officer Michael Fanone. Mr. Fanone was one of the Capitol Police Officers tasked with protecting the Capitol on January 6th and had a front row view of the violence of that day.

These kids had their school play shut down because it included a non-binary character and a gay couple.

I love their pricing. Yearly for $49.00 US or $4.99 per month US. It’s great because you can subscribe for a month and try it out. If it works for you great! You can subscribe for a year. If not you’ve lost $4.99. Not bad.

I’ve decided if I ever get around to writing my next app I will be using this pricing model. It should allow for constant updates throughout the year and no need to worry about batching up a bunch of big features for that big one time new version sale.

"Apel Gelar Pasukan kali ini merupakan bentuk kesiapan, bahwa TNI dan Polri siap untuk melaksanakan rangkaian kegiatan pengamanan yang akan diselenggarakan mulai tanggal 7 Mei sampai dengan selesai nanti," kata Kapolri usai memimpin Apel Gelar Pasukan di NTT, Sabtu 6 Mei 2023. Dengan sinergisitas dan soliditas yang kuat, Sigit mengungkapkan bahwa, personel TNI-Polri beserta stakeholder terkait lainnya akan melakukan pengamanan dan penjagaan mulai dari proses kedatangan delegasi hingga kegiatan utama dari event internasional tersebut. Dengan adanya pengamanan yang optimal, Sigit menegaskan bahwa, hal itu akan membuat pelaksanaan KTT ASEAN berjalan dengan aman dan lancar. Dengan begitu, kata Sigit, Negara Indonesia akan menjadi harum serta disegani di kancah internasional. Bahkan, menurut Sigit, dengan berlangsungnya KTT ASEAN yang aman dan lancar, diharapkan dari kegiatan tersebut dapat menghasilkan keputusan-keputusan yang baik untuk Indonesia maupun negara lainnya. "Tentunya ini menjadi kesepakatan bahwa TNI-Polri solid dan bersinergi serta siap untuk melaksanakan pengamanan KTT ASEAN 2023," tambah Sigit menegaskan. Di kesempatan yang sama, Panglima TNI Laksamana Yudo Margono menjelaskan bahwa, Apel Gelar Pasukan ini sekaligus memastikan bahwa seluruh personel maupun peralatan-peralatan yang ada telah siap untuk dioptimalkan dalam melakukan pengamanan KTT ASEAN. "Kita lihat bersama mereka sudah kita bagi dengan tugas di masing-masing tempat dan juga tugas masing-masing personel kita cek. Dan tentunya masih awal gelar kesiapan untuk cek kelengkapan juga. Dan nanti baru kita melaksanakan rapat lebih detail melibatkan semua stakeholder, dan juga akan melaksanakan Tactical Floor Game (TFG)," kata Yudo. Dengan dikerahkannya sekitar 12 ribu personel gabungan dari TNI, Polri dan stakeholder lainnya, Yudo menegaskan, seluruh petugas siap untuk memberikan pengamanan terbaik pada event tersebut. NNPP protest in Abuja brazen affront on democracy – Taraba Group

More groups have continued to condemn recent protests by members of the New Nigerian Peoples Party, NNPP, Taraba State chapter, at the national headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja. One such recent condemnations is coming from a pro-democracy group, Taraba First Group, TFG, which described the protest as a “brazen affront on democracy” On Monday, Chieftains of the NNPP from Taraba, stormed the premises of INEC in Abuja, demanding a review of the results of the just concluded governorship election in the state. The group is also seeking the cancellation of the governorship election in Taraba. But the Taraba First Group, TFG, insists the electorates are prepared to defend their votes. TFG in a statement made available to newsmen in Jalingo by its Coordinator, Inusa Aliyu, said INEC must not allow any anti-people development with devastating outcomes. The group said the protest in Abuja is fake and a desperate attempt to upturn the people’s will. ”Why didn’t they carry out the protest in Jalingo, instead they went to Abuja.?’ “Any attempt to touch the people’s wish shall not only be roundly condemned but it shall be vehemently resisted. “Taraba State had a very transparent election with a clear winner emerging with a large margin if anything, everyone has been expecting congratulatory messages from Professor Sani Yahaya of the NNPP”. Claiming that the protesters are not from Taraba State, the group said, ”We are amused by this desperation on the part of national NNPP, as a matter of fact, we even doubt if this was sponsored by NNPP Taraba because they know the truth.” While calling on INEC to remain steadfast, the TFG also asked the NNPP to follow the laid down procedures by approaching an election petition tribunal.  " In 2002 alone, Giuliani took in an estimated eight million dollars in speaking fees. A spinoff outfit, Giuliani Capital Advisors, made $84.7 million in 2004. By 2007, Giuliani’s worth was estimated to be thirty million dollars. At one point, he owned six homes, including a nine-room co-op on the Upper East Side and a house in the Hamptons, and had eleven country-club memberships. 

But his work for Donald Trump has reportedly brought him to the brink of bankruptcy. When he tried to get paid for his services, Trump stiffed him. (Giuliani apparently failed to notice the one-way sign on the Trump loyalty street.) He now hawks collectible coins, health products, and cigars on his podcast, “Rudy Giuliani’s Common Sense,” and sells video messages on Cameo for four hundred dollars apiece. In April, he appeared on “The Masked Singer,” where he offered his rendition of “Bad to the Bone” in a rooster costume. 

This is someone whom Oprah Winfrey called “America’s mayor,” who was named “Person of the Year” by Time, who had an honorary knighthood bestowed on him by the Queen of England. What happened? The rough answer suggested in Kirtzman’s book is that a posture of moral rectitude, instilled in Giuliani by his Catholic education and made into a powerful political weapon by a personality that, as a friend said, lacks the fear gene, succumbed to Mammon. 

Righteousness, as it often does, morphed into self-righteousness. After launching his career as a federal prosecutor and winning convictions of Wall Street inside traders like Ivan Boesky, Giuliani seems to have decided that riches were his due.
