what do you think jace thinks of daemon?

oh this is very complex and delicious. to me jace is of two minds when it comes to daemon:

1) he's the man who married his mother just after both of jace's father figures died of mysterious circumstances, therefore making daemon into a unknown entity who is stealing rhaenyra (adding that after a long separation, daemyra was v busy with each other).

and

2) daemon is jace's stepfather. and what is more, daemon is jace's longtime stepfather who makes his mother happy and after those tumultuous and traumatic events during eps 6 & 7, daemon is a stable parental and/or adult figure in jace's life. and most importantly, in whose presence jace implicitly feels safe.

i think for most viewers it's easy to see why jace dislikes daemon and it's the same for jace himself. daemon doesn't make himself likeable or palatable, he has rhaenyra, he has his family, he's safe and doesn't hunger for viserys' love as much. he's free from two half miserable marriages, he's more himself now than he ever was. conversely, jace is growing up in an unstable family context where he feels like he has to perform and prove himself constantly whether it's about his targaryen realness heritage and claim as second in line to the throne or about his role in the family when laenor checked out a long time ago and his other father figure harwin cannot act like one in public. i will be so bold as to say, jace was one of luke's primary caretakers too. this kind of parentified child might feel threatened ( + the obvious resentment jace feels for his parents) when another one comes into the picture.

jace might have felt after the driftmark episode that rhaenyra was alone and that it was his job to step-up so to speak (more or less what happened to aemon during the same scene, another parentified child!) so when daemon comes to the picture and he's planning to stay it clashed with what jace thought their life could be.

i don't think daemon really made any effort to parent the older kids (it's okay jace has bad vibes), but just because he married to rhaenyra he becomes jace's stepfather by default. but jace is so over fathers, he doesn't want another father who will die and leave him alone (and all the feelings of guilt bc maybe if jace hadn't complained and fought aegon better then harwin wouldn't have felt the need to defend him and be sent to harrenhal as punishment. where he died. in a fire. it's all jace's fault). so his best bet is to deny daemon any possible overture, anything that could made him be endeared to jace. he doesn't want the pain of losing anyone else.

and daemon is so easy to hate. easy to hate when he gives rhaenyra the silver haired purple eyed targaryen sons, when he can effortlessly and without bother or prejudice teach luke (and we know luke wants to please people so much, he would embrace daemon as a father) and joffrey how to swordfight, when he's already loved by baela and rhaena.

but the thing is that jace trusts daemon. he doesn't trust him per se in the emotional sense but he trusts that daemon will never hurt rhaenyra or his siblings, that he won't claim baby aegon and viserys are the better heirs over him (i've talked a bit about this subject here). this gets demonstrated in ep 10 where jace takes a more active role as rhaenyra's spokesperson when daemon's "gone to madness. gone to plot his war". while he seems nervous about speaking out, i don't think he's really afraid that daemon will do something to him, instead daemon takes him outside and does a very obvious show of loyalty, one that i don't think jace will dismiss even in his dislike. same thing in ep 8 where daemon cuts down vaemond velaryon for calling rhaenyra a whore and calling into question the birth of her older boys.

this is the man he's seen every day for six years, rhaena and baela's father, the man his mother loves above all. jace is not afraid of that.

tl:dr. jace trusts daemon with their safety but doesn't respect him (i.e. see how he calls him just "daemon" without titles). he purposely shuts him out emotionally because he doesn't want to get hurt again like after laenor's and harwin's death. he resent's daemon's role in the family as a result of being a parentified child in an unstable family context. i think they are fine.

Jiang YanLi

I don't really know what to think about... her. I have several reasons to dislike her, but I also have a lot of reasons to think that she is not bad if compared to the rest of the Jiangs. people say that she liked wwx better, but it just doesn't make sense to me. i have no clue about how far I can protect her bc of her ignorance, bc she wasn't aware of a bunch of stuff because I have no clue of how much she actually knew. she indeed loved wwx and treated him good, but love alone isn't enough. lack of action— no, actions that would get things worse, such as fucking marrying into the very sect that wanted her beloved a-xian's head on a platter, to rob his inventions and to attack the 50 people he was strugling to protect. people that she didn't really did anything to try to save as well. she also didn't try her best to save wwx. I see a lot on fanfics or fanon headcanons that she was So Worried About Her Baby Brother 💔 when in fact she acted as if everything was normal. as if her soup would fix things. wwx himself says that lwj keeps on reminding him how everything is different now the only person who was actually freaking out to keep wwx safe. the one and only who was concearned and actually cared. she acts so... naturally. wwx also does everything he does bc of his instincts and jc couldn't care less as long as wwx won the fucking war. it's clear he's done reckless things to protect them before.

also... her relationship with each brother. why is she constantly asking wwx to stop? to "get it aside?" since their very first strong connection, she was there bc jc didn't want to be in trouble and wanted wwx to not to say anything about their fight.

I don't know how much she didn't know about politics, I know it was very little, but I cannot believe she is that stupid. she is such an aNgEL to wwx that... she scapes from further analysis. i just... I don't know. what do you think of her?

I think the reason YanLi can feel hard to pin down is because there are two versions of her. The version WWX sees and presents to us through rose tinted glasses because she's the only person to show him warmth in the Jiang household; and YanLi's actual character/ actions in the story: a kind but mediocre girl who preferred to remain naive and pretend everything was ok, who just wanted everyone to put on a smile, and whose main concern was getting married;

In many respects Wei Wuxian's relationship with YanLi is loving but shallow because he can't really share his troubles with her. Her way of relating to others is by mothering them. I know a lot of people complain that she was shoved into this role, but it just seems to be her natural way of showing her affection for others. So for her contentment WWX is happy to act like a kid. In that way the dynamic between them feels somewhat performative on his part.

"Jiang YanLi passed a handkerchief for Wei WuXian to wipe his mouth, “Is it good?”

Wei WuXian didn��t take the handkerchief. Instead, he pouted his mouth with exaggeration, “Yes!”

Jiang Cheng, “Don’t you have hands yourself?!”

With a smile, Jiang YanLi wiped Wei WuXian’s mouth and chin, and walked happily out with the bowl in her hands.

She makes soup for him and shows him a nurturing warmth and in exchange he acts like everything is ok and keeps smiling for her and embraces the only qualities she has: cooking soup, mothering and appeasement. That dynamic is set up from the start when she praises him after he takes the blame for getting injured squarely on his shoulders.

“Seeing how worried he seemed, Wei WuXian took the initiative, “Relax. I won’t tell Uncle Jiang. I only hurt myself because I suddenly wanted to climb a tree last night.”

Hearing this, Jiang Cheng sighed in relief. He swore, “You can relax as well. Anytime I see a dog, I’ll chase it away for you!”

Seeing how the two finally made up with each other, Jiang YanLi cheered, “That’s the spirit.”

It also feels like once the main subject of her affection shows her attention she sort of forgets about everything else. I mean Jin Zixuan is the heir of the family that wants Wei Wuxian dead... but when she finally communicates with Wei Wuxian after his defection it's to show off her wedding dress for her impending wedding to the man and expects WWX to rejoice... On top of that she doesn't ask once how he's doing. Doesn't think to bring him one thing other than soup. She's helped out in the camps during the war so regardless of how immensely ignorant and sheltered she may be she has to at least have SOME idea of the fact that people need food and shelter that and generally requires a form of payment. Again people will be like she was poor! She didn't have her own money! Even if she didn't have one penny to spare as the sister of a CLAN LEADER of one of the richest Clans, this is a point where she could have told jiang cheng to give Wei Wuxian silver in front of her and go off on him if he didn't. Hell she had jewelry! Qiankun bags are a thing. It's absurd to act like there was nothing she could do other than show WWX her fit. But she didn't. She preferred everything swept under the rug. Her big wedding dress reveal is a farce of caring. Wei Wuxian knows his part. Be grateful for the soup, admire the dress and act like everything is fine. And as always she downplays jiang cheng's temper and snide comments and asks of Wei Wuxian to compromise around it.

"Both of you can stop fooling around. I brought soup for you two. Wait a second.”

The thing is Wei Wuxian wasn't fooling around. jc was being nasty. She takes a bowl of soup to Wen Ning... a fierce corpse who can't eat even though she grew up in a cultivation Clan... She doesn't however ask Wen Ning to stay inside the courtyard. She let jiang cheng rudely kick him out... That's almost like her entire behavior in a nutshell. Appease jc and apply soup.

Wen Qing on the other hand lived her whole life aiming to protect Wen Ning but then went with him so they could turn themselves in in the hopes of making things better for Wei Wuxian. This was not an impulsive act. It was discussed, it was though through, consciously decided with a cool head and full knowledge of the fatal consequences.

When Yanli she makes her ill fated run to Nightless city it's clear she's not in her right mind. It's interesting that the two times the jiang siblings moved to protect Wei Wuxian was when they'd lost something major, whereas the Wen siblings risked the height of their privilege to help. I've also seen people write that "YanLi even forgave Wei Wuxian for Zixuan's death" but we're not told that at all

“Jiang YanLi, “I’m… I’m here to tell you…”

To tell him what? That it’s fine? That I don’t hate you? That everything is fine?That I don’t blame you for have killed Jin ZiXuan? It was impossible.

But she couldn’t say anything that was the opposite either. And so, she didn’t know what else she could say to Wei Wei WuXian, under such circumstances.

She saw him and ran after him without thinking to see him one last time, but she asks him to stop fighting against all the people who would kill him.

With a sigh, Jiang Yanli said, "Axian, you... stop first. Don't do it again, don't..."

Idk what her thinking is here but she's definitely not treating him like he's the one who was ambushed and walked in on a party cheerfully moodboarding his murder. YanLi is not an evil person and she benefits from the contrast with her foul mother and brother but she's willfully naive to the point where it's harmful. She also expects Wei Wuxian to compromise around jiang cheng so in that way she does not treat them equally. In the end though just like when Wei Wuxian first fell from the tree and still got hurt because YanLi could not catch him, her love was always going to fall short. That's why Lan Wangji catching him securely is so symbolic. So just because Wei Wuxian has warm feelings towards her doesn't mean as a reader you can't find her insipid and uninspiring when she is in fact written as mediocre.

seriously though i'm a sucker for tragic heroes and s1 wilbur? yeah. people try to paint early s1 wilbur as the same person he is now (possibly including current wilbur. lmao) but i just.... i don't buy it? and some of this is doylist, right, during the first l'manburg war i doubt wilbur had already planned out the direction his character arc was going to go, he was just playing a revolution leader in minecraft and quoting hamilton. & that informs his acting for moments like when he decides to surrender to dream or when he's telling tommy not to put himself in danger & to follow his heart! i genuinely don't think he was being manipulative for the sake of power there! or when he says he never cared about l'manburg, i don't... believe that. lmao. he cried for l'manburg! he killed himself over losing l'manburg! this is a server full of unreliable narrators & wilbur is NOT an exception lmao

and his confrontation with phil in the button room is like..... my absolute shit. and the fact that before his breakdown he had been sending phil letters regularly informing him that Everything's Fine!!!!!! ugh. wow.

and revivebur!!!!! revivebur who has NO coping skills and flies from emotion to emotion because everything exists so much constantly and it's such a rush and he's putting charisma on over it but he's just on a ridiculous emotional roller coaster constantly. i think a lot about how the two times we heard from him when he was dead (talking to tommy at the end of the s2 finale, talking to tommy in the afterlife) he was in favor of death and being dead & felt that it was for the best whereas now that he's back he's all :DDDDD THIS IS GREAT AND EXCELLENT

(and. something something-- him being bad for the server means that the only way he can be happy is for him to embrace his role as the Villain. he tried doing the right thing by killing himself and replacing himself with a Nice Person once, and look where it got them!)

((AND. something about how niceness=weakness in his mind. when he first founded l'manberg they didn't fight with weapons! where did that get them? dead. all ghostbur wanted was to make everyone happy! where did that get him? lied to constantly, his home destroyed, suicidal as well, and then... dead again. he says dream's the only one who gets it, and i'd argue that 'it' here means 'the importance of throwing away everything you have in a desperate grab for power because otherwise they will take it all from you'. can't be hurt by others if you've already hurt yourself, and maybe, maybe, maybe, if you're evil and cruel and heartless, you'll eventually get enough power that you'll be able to feel safe again. bc wilbur can say that he doesn't care, that he never cared, but honestly i don't think that was ever really an option for him like it was for dream. he cares so much about everything all the time. it's just a question of whether he'll get power quickly enough to protect the things he cares about or whether he'll destroy them himself because it's better than letting someone else have the power to do that))

and! his black and white thinking!!!! honestly i think the only person on the server with as intense of black-and-white thinking as wilbur is tommy, and.... to some degree tommy's working on that and realizing that people can be and do both good and bad things? but. while tommy was working on that, wilbur was in hell. for decades. and so he has done the opposite of improving on this point, and it....shows. people are either heroes or they're villains and they can swap in his eyes so quickly. including himself. especially himself. boy does NOT have any mental stability

and i do think he manipulates tommy a lot and his relationship with tommy is not healthy at all tbc! but imo-- it's very clearly from a place of fear and vulnerability and not wanting anything else to be taken from him? it's very Frantic Attempts To Avoid Real Or Imagined Abandonment. cf the double parenthetical earlier abt his attitude towards power. also i like crimeboys, so sue me

idk i like wilbur "frantically plastering charisma over his blatant crazy" dreamsmp quite a lot. i'd also like to thank him for being a terrible father and for having so very much constant sexual tension with quackity dsmp and for the white hair streak. very sexy of him if i do say so myself

this specified wilbur dsmp so you are not getting my thoughts on ghostbur (light of my LIFE) or cc!wilbur (terrible boy (affectionate)) but rest assured. i love them too.

i don't really read romance novels honestly? the closest i come is that i read mxtx novels and fanfiction and i used to read a lot of YA. which, okay, yes, is kind of like saying "i don't read romance novels except for all the romance novels i read", but in terms of central examples of the genre, i genuinely don't? i find them boring at best and painful to read at worst, and the adjacent things i read more of i usually read for aspects other than the romance. idk man i'm just not that interested in romance for the sake of romance

he descends from a family of vampires whose blood is said to be related to a korean pureblood family. the family itself branches into royalty and the cadet branch, with moonsik belonging to the latter. it never weighed on him tho.

he’s always been the one in the family who really was seen as the black sheep due to how much of an emotional creature he was ( and his powers really tied onto his emotions, which made ice bursts... very much something happening around him ) and complained a whole lot about it. living that queen elsa lyfe here :’)

but still were very pleased to see he embraced the path of the scholar, studying and reading while performing his beloved arts, playing along the yangban class while becoming himself a teacher to the emperor of joseon’s children

well, that until the empire fell during the world wars and the family as a whole decided to simply retire and lay low for a bit before simply taking over once more, but as business moguls and great entrepreneurs.

moonsik’s role in life never really changed: just like he was a scholar and a teacher, he’s kept the inclintations towards the fine arts so alive his family most of the times don’t even try to stop him, leaving him be.

and yes, it’s mainly because they don’t wanna deal with icicles being FUCKING EVERYWHERE since he’s still... having his abilities very much tied to his emotions and he really deeply feels it when it’s a negative sentiment.

he owns an art studio and he paints a lot while sighing about how feeble the world is, wondering how it would be to break from the usual mold and actually get in contact with creatures that aren’t vampires... which is all he’s grown up around so you can imagine how fucking ignorant he is.

but he tries, he really does. pls don’t yell at him.

hamza’s parents have never been great rulers. they aren’t bad ones either, the people don’t hate them per se, it’s just that they are both bad at solving conflict and often either allow themselves to be pushed into a corner or just hand out money to keep people in line. there’s a lot of... not corruption per se but something in the likes of it. as a consequence, over the past 35 years there has been a lot of money ( both legally and illegally ) leaving but not enough coming in. on the surface things are fine, but the cracks are starting to show.

there was always a lot of pressure on hamza’s father to succeed. his mother despised weakness and had a very black or white view of things. right before he was crowned he admitted to his wife that he didn’t feel ready to rule and that he wished they could spend more time just enjoying their early married life with their child.

before hamza and his twin brother came along their parents had two children who died. one was a stillborn and the other choked on food when she was three. honestly, they thought they were cursed and destined not to have children.

by the time hamza and his twin were born when their parents were in their late 30s.

initially, they were both educated to be rulers but it soon just started making sense that hamza’s brother would the one wearing the crown and frankly hamza was perfectly ok with that. he didn’t mind being his right hand man if necessary, but if he picked other people to help him hamza wouldn’t mind. it’s not that he dislikes his family, not at all, it’s that he has always loved the idea of being his own person and not being immediately connected to his family. it's the whole "i'm so much more than my family & my ancestors, i'm my own person" thing.

the boys have always been very alike in nature, both social and slightly boisterous, truly two peas in a pod, it’s always been the fine details of their personalities which set them apart. for example, hamza always comes off as the most irresponsible sibling but when it comes down to it he’s incredibly dutiful and takes “the greater good” into consideration, whereas his brother is seen as the most responsible and diplomatic one but usually generally follows his heart in the end.

even though his brother is the one under the spotlight most of the time, hamza has never minded attention and always stops to chat with the press (which some people think is attention seeking and hamza doesn’t care to correct them, however, the truth is he’s just being polite/nice? they’re just doing their job and hamza doesn’t mind giving them smth quick and irrelevant to talk about and make their jobs easier).

both brothers are popular in the press only you’re more likely to find his brother’s name in respected newspapers and hamza’s in gossip magazines lmao

hamza very much had a talk shit get hit mentality when he was younger. he has grown out of it (primarily because of his experience in the army)... for the most part.

he has an odd relationship with food. he was a very chubby child and deep down he’s scared of putting on weight. he often indulges when it comes to alcohol but he’s very careful with what he eats and works out regularly.

he doesn’t smoke nor do drugs. “my body is a temple” etc etc etc. also he thinks only boring people need drugs so there’s that!

when he was in his late teens some paparazzi got photos of him leaving a nightclub, completely plastered, making out with some girl and then later he and his friends were stopped by police for being rowdy and publicly indecent and the whole thing was a small scandal. hamza framed one of the photos published and still has it in his living room. it pisses his parents off to no end but he just finds it funny.

he has always loved a good joke. and a good party. it’s true that he has some hedonistic tendencies but they’re not AS BAD as people think.

IT’S IMPORTANT TO NOTE that, as opposed to his brother, hamza never had to face his personality flaws and shortcomings head-on, and there’s parts of his personality that he has never gotten the chance to fully explore yet and likely never will unless he becomes more politically active or until he finds out how bad the country’s finances are. if that happens, he’s going to surprise a lot of people - both for good reasons ( he’s a good leader and strategist ) and bad ones ( he can be very vengeful and has no time for bullshit, those who mess with his family and country will suffer the consequences. all the checks his father wrote to keep people in line? he would close that tap and piss a lot of people off ). politically speaking, hamza has never had to step up to the plate, he has never had to be a serious person, but if he does, if he’s forced into that role ... it’ll certainly be special.

wears bright colours, and patterns like he doesn’t give a fuck (and he doesn’t). also a big fan of leather jackets and has a huge collection of sunglasses.

he has always been an adventurous and independent kid, always very sure of himself, and never minded spending time away from his family.

actually, when he was a kid he wanted to be an archaeologist.

had like, a bunch of gfs growing up. loved the company, enjoyed giving attention just as much as receiving it, hated when they stuck around for too long or tried to impose on him

surprisingly, hamza is actually incredibly loyal and ride or die for those he considers worthy and he is not nearly as irresponsible and self-centered as he comes across. he also gives great advice and is a good listener.

hamza is a really fast reader and he was always a decent student but he never liked school, he always found it too boring ( he often played pranks and spread rumours to keep himself entertained - he didn’t take any of it seriously ). he did study but just enough to pass and get okay grades. as soon as it was possible he joined the army, while his brother pursued higher education.

the first time hamza realised that there was likely something wrong with the country’s finances was when he was in the army. back then things weren’t as serious and he spoke to his parents and his brother about it. he was told things were under control, and he believed that his brother (and parents) knew how to handle everything. or he wanted to believe it. looking back, he’s not sure which one was it.

when hamza was in his early 20s he was presumed dead for a whole year. this isn’t public knowledge ( although there were random reports - “conspiracy theories” - about it and the journalists were either fired or paid off to keep quiet ) as his parents kept the whole thing under wraps. the plan was to keep saying he was on missions until it was impossible to keep the facade going and then they would make it public that he had died in some grandiose self-sacrificing manner.

surprisingly (once he returned home) hamza understood his parents decision, it was his brother who was beside himself. his brother had been a nervous wreck for the past year and was constantly at war with their parents about telling the public the truth. hamza’s disappearance was quite traumatic for his brother.

recently his brother has become more aware of the state of the country’s finances (hamza’s still not fully aware of how bad it is yet) sometimes when his brother has a drink too many he talks about abdicating / not wanting to be king and hamza always laughs like “heavy is the head...” and never takes him too seriously but lmao maybe he should.

one of the reasons why hamza doesn’t take his brother’s words too seriously is because he always seemed to fit the role of king just fine. another reason is because his brother didn’t have to be at the summit as he could be in a relationship right now, but he ended things which hamza interpreted as the relationship not being serious ( unbeknownst to hamza this is also one of the reasons why his brother is thinking of abdicating, he regrets ending the relationship and doesn’t want to marry a stranger )

hamza has been nonchalantly vocal about how little interest he has in getting married. not just to his parents and friends but when talking to the press as well. he doesn’t take any of it too seriously, primarily because he’s not the one who is going to be king.

he likes having his space and independence. he has mild ptsd ( he’s been working on it for literal years tho so it’s not as bad as it used to be ) and doesn’t like to have to explain himself to people. he has insomnia, and pools, lakes, etc are a big trigger for him.

his current girl-friend - they will NOT be finals. honestly i’m only requesting this character 4 the drama. she and hamza have been more less dating for some months but the relationship was never public and hamza enjoyed that, as well as the fact that they weren’t always together. honestly, hamza isn’t nearly as serious about their relationship as she thinks he is - he does like her but he’s not in love with her. they are to have a break up soon and tbh i just want her to think he’s an asshole lmao
