I haven't said anything about the Gaza situation mainly because you should be listening to people who know more about it than I do. But it's becoming apparent that this is one of those issues where people who do have personal stakes in the matter are finding it difficult to know who they can trust.

So here's what I do know about Gaza, Israel, and Palestine. I'm not going to talk any more than I can help about what I don't know. And -- let me make this super clear -- people commenting on social media, including here, to make factual claims intended to draw me to their side and treat some other category of people as my enemies, does not count as a change in my state of knowledge.

The Israeli state right now is attempting to wipe the Palestinian population of Gaza off the map. This is called genocide.

On 7 October, Hamas publicly attacked civilian targets in a manner calculated to cause widespread fear and panic. This is called terrorism.

Nothing justifies either of these actions, not even each other. The killing of innocent people is never justified by their being of the same ethnicity or nationality as some other person who is guilty of an atrocity.

Even if an innocent person benefits in some fashion from atrocities committed by another person -- as one could argue that the citizenry of a colonizer state do -- that doesn't justify violence against them. At most they might reasonably be asked to contribute to some kind of reparations.

Jews and Palestinians can both reasonably be described as indigenous to the land.

In terms of the Israeli state's actions towards the Palestinian people, and the benefits it thereby accrues, it is to all practical intents and purposes a colonizer state.

If you think the previous point justifies terror attacks on Israeli civilians, and you're a white person living in the US or Australia or Canada or South Africa or Aotearoa... then boy oh boy do I have news for you.

Most Israelis have nowhere else to go. Israel might accept Jewish immigrants without requiring them to renounce their previous citizenship, but that's because so often that previous citizenship is revoked or cancelled or at least made non-viable by their former country.

Fascist groups in the West hate both Jews and Muslims and are happy to spread hateful misinformation about either under the guise of standing up against atrocities. They are smart enough, much as we might wish otherwise, to infiltrate leftist communities if we are not vigilant.

Violent attacks on Jewish communities around the world have gone up by over an order of magnitude since October.

Most Jews, including Israeli Jews, oppose what Israel is doing in Gaza right now.

I'm not comfortable with framing the issue in terms of whether the state of Israel "has the right to exist". Israeli people, like all people, have the right to exist and live in peace. States are artificial entities, not conscious beings with the capacity to flourish or suffer, and it makes little sense to regard them as having "rights".

States do, however, have duties and responsibilities. The primary responsibility of any state, the reason why we have such things as states at all, is to defend its people's right to live in peace.

For people to live in peace, their country has to be at peace, which means that the state's duty to defend its people includes the duty to make peace when possible. The state of Israel is grossly, chronically derelict in this side of its duty.

On 7 October Israel was about to sign a peace treaty with Saudi Arabia. Hamas's attack was timed to disrupt that treaty.

Hamas of all people knows how Israel habitually responds to terror attacks. They cannot have been expecting any response much different from the one they got. From this I am forced to conclude that Hamas prefers a genocidal war against their own people to a peace in which Israel is still there.

Hamas denies the Holocaust and promotes the fraudulent "Protocols of the Elders of Zion". A Western group who did that would be uncontroversially described as neo-Nazis.

The Houthis in Yemen, who are opposing shipments of aid to Israel, have slogans including "death to Israel, a curse upon the Jews". Again, any Western group who did that would be considered neo-Nazis.

Of the people who use the slogan "from the river to the sea", the percentage who use it to invoke a call for genocide against Israelis is neither 100% nor 0%.

There is a certain word beginning with Z which you'll notice I haven't used in this post. This is because it is a dangerously ambiguous word. Some people use it in the legitimate, specific political sense of "Israeli nationalism". Others use it to mean "any restraint or moderation in considering how to respond to Israel's actions". Still others use it to mean "an absence of antisemitism".

The US is an ally and supporter of Israel. I do not know the political reasons why. Wrapping those unknown reasons up in a bundle and labelling it with the aforementioned Z-word adds nothing to my understanding.

Some component of the US's support for Israel comes not from Jewish people or their allies but from Evangelical Christians concerned with Israel chiefly as a site of apocalyptic prophecy. I do not know what weighting this component has in the total mix of the US's politics.

Some people argue for a one-state solution, with Israelis and Palestinians as equal citizens. Some people argue for a two-state solution where each group has its own government and laws. For each, I have seen the claim that it is the only possible solution made with great confidence by people who know more about the situation than I do. I do not know which side is correct.

I do know that any proposal where one group just isn't there any more is a non-solution.

The Lady’s Guide to Celestial Mechanics. By Olivia Waite. New York: Avon Impulse, 2019.

It isn’t until she finds a letter from the Countess of Moth, looking for someone to translate a groundbreaking French astronomy text, that she knows where to go. Showing up at the Countess’ London home, she hoped to find a challenge, not a woman who takes her breath away.

Catherine St Day looks forward to a quiet widowhood once her late husband’s scientific legacy is fulfilled. She expected to hand off the translation and wash her hands of the project—instead, she is intrigued by the young woman who turns up at her door, begging to be allowed to do the work, and she agrees to let Lucy stay. But as Catherine finds herself longing for Lucy, everything she believes about herself and her life is tested.

While Lucy spends her days interpreting the complicated French text, she spends her nights falling in love with the alluring Catherine. But sabotage and old wounds threaten to sever the threads that bind them. Can Lucy and Catherine find the strength to stay together or are they doomed to be star-crossed lovers?

Content Warnings: sexism, allusions to homophobia

Overview: I feel like I’m in the minority of not loving this book as much as I wanted to. Based on content alone, it should have been a perfect storm for me: a historical sapphic romance, a lady scientist, debates about the value of art and women’s contributions... but while the romance genre doesn’t have nearly enough wlw stories, representation alone wasn’t enough to sustain my interest in this novel. It had the threads of a good story - something along the lines of The Countess Conspiracy or The Suffragette Scandal - but in my opinion, too much of the focus was on needless interpersonal drama, which left the plot dragging for the bulk of the story. So though the representation is great, and there are a number of feminist themes that I think are valuable, I didn’t enjoy this book enough to give it more than 2 or 3 stars.

Writing: Waite’s prose is about what you’d expect from the romance genre. It’s simple and straightforward, getting to the point without leaving the reader wondering what’s going on. My main criticism would perhaps be that Waite sometimes does a little head-hopping in the middle of a chapter without a section break. One minute, we’ll be seeing things from Lucy’s POV, and the next, we’ll get something from Catherine, then back to Lucy. It was a little jarring, but not too distracting - I could still immerse myself in the story ok.

Plot: The Lady’s Guide follows Lucy Muchelney as she translates, expands, and publishes M. Oleron’s Mechanique celeste (an astronomy text) under the patronage of Lady Catherine St. Day, Countess of Moth. After being rebuffed by the male members of the Polite Science Society, Lucy endeavors to render her own translation in hopes of educating readers who are interested in astronomy, but may not have had access to the range of texts needed to understand Oleron’s work. Catherine, for her part, funds the printing of Lucy’s work, while also discovering her own value as an embroiderer.

On the surface, this plot had all the things I love: women in science, valuing women’s art, a social commentary on patriarchy. But despite the interesting threads, I didn’t feel as if Waite used them to the greatest advantage. Aside from a few scenes, there wasn’t a lot of external pressure from the Polite Society; any drama that arose from their sexism was easily dismissed or avoided with a trip to the country, and I felt as if sexism in this book was more of a nuisance than a threat. This isn’t to say I wanted the characters to be constantly suffering or be miserable from an onslaught of male meddling, but I would like to have seen more of a sustained plotline where the Polite Society attempts to thwart Lucy’s efforts, thereby creating more suspense and giving Lucy and Catherine some external challenges to face together.

I also think the subplots could have been strengthened so that they enhanced the main conflict. The plot involving Eliza, the maid with a talent for sketching, was a good parallel to Catherine’s arc, which involved finding and rewarding women’s talents in art, but Eliza wasn’t a compelling character on her own, nor did I think Catherine reflect enough on the paradox of how she encouraged Eliza but not herself. I also think more could have been done with Lucy’s brother, Stephen, so that his meddling in Lucy’s career paralleled the Polite Society’s - just in a more subtle way, thereby showing different forms of sexism. Granted, there is a little of that, but like the Polite Society, Stephen pops up at convenient times before disappearing a page or two later.

Characters: I hate to say it, but I didn’t feel as if I could connect to the characters. Lucy, one of our heroines, is a mathematician and astronomer who inspires Catherine to see herself as an artist... and that’s mostly it. I guess she’s also bold and headstrong, but honestly, she felt more like an archetype than a fully-fledged character.

Catherine, for her part, is meek on account of being mistreated by her husband, but has brilliant skills as an embroiderer and is generous with her financial support. I did like the depth that Catherine had with regards to her insecurity over whether or not she could call herself an artist, and I liked that she respected Lucy’s feelings and didn’t allow her desires to be too selfish. But I also felt like she had no ambition or desires of her own until maybe 75% of the way through the book, and she mainly existed to support Lucy.

Side characters were hit or miss. I liked the idea of Eliza, the maid who gets to put her drawing skills to use as an engraver, but she wasn’t a fully-fleshed out character and didn’t hold my interest on her own. Stephen, Lucy’s brother, had the potential to be interesting, as he is an artist and acts as a foil to Lucy in many ways, but he flits in and out of the story as needed. Even Lucy’s ex, Pricilla, seems only to exist to make petty drama; there was no pining, no angst, and I didn’t see why Lucy had once loved her. There wasn’t even any commentary on how both Pris and Catherine were blond women who were skilled at embroidery.

Polite Society members had the potential to be good antagonists, but because their appearances were so contained, I don’t think they were used to their full potential. They provided some nice commentary, but I would have liked to see them meddle more often in Lucy’s translation process.

Romance: This is personal preference: I don’t like it when the love interests get together too early in the story. It usually means the rest of the romance is going to revolve around petty drama, and I think that’s what I got here. Lucy and Catherine become a couple some 25% of the way through the book, and for the life of me, I couldn’t see why they wanted to be together other than they were interested in women and happened to be sharing a house. Over time, their reasons for loving one another became a little more clear: Lucy loves that Catherine believes in her and lets her forge her own path, whereas Catherine loves that Lucy values her skills and lifts her up, rather than dismissing her (as Catherine’s deceased husband did). While these are certainly nice, I wanted there to be a little more to their romance. Because they got together so quickly, there was very little pining, very little growth in their affections.

I also think all the angst and relationship drama that happened after they got together was a little tedious. Lucy spends some time pining for her ex, which causes Catherine to be jealous. Catherine also sees the relationship as being incompatible at one point because Lucy likes science and she likes art, so of course that means they’re on different paths that can’t be reconciled. Most of the barriers to the relationship could have been overcome by either talking it out or getting to know one another a little better, so rather than good tension (in the form of suspense), I felt like there was pointless tension. I would have much rather seen Waite dive into the very real concerns, such as the economic inequality between them or the lack of permanence that comes with not being able to marry - I think those are real, life-altering concerns that could have tied in well with the non-romance plot, but unfortunately, those concerns seemed to be resolved a little too neatly.

TL;DR: Despite having some much-needed wlw representation and a number of feminist themes, The Lady’s Guide to Celestial Mechanics does little to cultivate a compelling plot and relies on misunderstandings to drive the romantic tension.

She-ra SPOP Season 3 theories. Part One.

Well folks, it’s been a while since I’ve done a theory or Tumblr post in general. Always meant to do this but as per usual life and other projects took over. And with the announcement of V3 unexpectedly swiftly arriving on August 2nd 2019 rather than the speculated November, like season 1 last year, now is as good a time as any.

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVEN’T SEEN SEASON 2, LOOK AWAY NOW!

So at the end of season 2 our deuteragonists, Catra and Adora both seemed in rather ominous situations. With Catra in what I theorise as being in Hordak’s portal, his first test subject if you will.

And Adora about to be kidnapped by Shadow Weaver.

Noelle Stevenson recently implied that Season 3 would be where Catra and Adora would cross paths again, which brings me to my first part.

I think that Beast Island is where Hordak has sent Catra in the portal and where SW will take Adora and this is where they will cross paths. BEAST ISLAND.

We have heard Beast Island mentioned on many occasions, mostly in Season 2 between Hordak and Catra when discussing SW’s fate. We know that it is a place that instills fear in the Force Captain and her trusty sidekick, Scorpia, so much so, that Catra risks Hordak’s displeasure and begs SW to give her anything that will give the Sorceress a stay of execution.

But we have also heard mention of it waaaay back in s1 in Plumeria, when Perfuma tells the tale of She-Ra and how she tamed the beast of Beast Island.

It is a legend that commands enough respect for other cultures on Etheria to pass on to younger generations and immortalise it in art for posterity.And if Mara was indeed the She-ra that defeated the Beast, then that defeat occurred over a 1000 years ago.

In the ‘Lightspinner’ episode Catra says that no one has ever returned from Beast Island, my theory as to why no one has returned is rather a case of the residents of Beast Island, wishing to be left alone, have allowed its ferocious reputation to precede it and go uncorrected as a layer of protection and is rather a bit of a safe haven of sorts from the Horde and others who may wish to cause harm. They have not joined the rebellion as they wish to be left out of it, believe they cannot beat the Horde and/or lack the technology to withstand a Horde attack. (much like the Plumerians back in s1) That those who have been sent there as a punishment have been integrated into the community that is already there or have been not allowed to leave for fear that they might spill the beans.

*In the 1985 She-Ra, had an episode named ‘The prisoners of Beast Island’, so this could very well come into play*

Shadow Weaver did not seem as troubled by the threat that she would be sent to Beast Island which leads me to believe that the Island maybe isn’t as terrifying as the Horde children and the current Princesses believe, not to say that it will not present any challenges.

Being that the Horde have raised their soldiers deeply entrenched in propaganda and have more than likely kidnapped, taken as wards so the kingdoms won’t rise against them, ie Scorpia, it is not too far a stretch, that the Beast Islanders have been able to keep up the illusion.

We have also seen many characters with animal characteristics such as Scorpia, Rogelio, Octavia and the so far unnamed Orange* and Saffron Princesses we saw back in S1. I theroise that these characters are from Beast Island’s neighbouring kingdoms or may even be residents of Beast Island.

CATRA.

Over the last two seasons, Catra has geared up to be one of the most complex characters of the show, her motivations coming from deep seated issues of self worth and the trauma she has suffered at the hands of SW.

Added onto by her complicated relationship with Adora and the deep wound of her best friend’s perceived betrayal. It has culminated in a lust for a position of power and an opportunity to show what she is capable of, born of a wish for some form of independence. *Season 1

“Soon we’ll be calling the shots.”

However, that position of power has been granted to Catra by someone else being taken out of play, ie Adora leaving the Horde and SW being imprisoned.

That is not to say that Catra is undeserving of the title Force Captain as she has proved herself on many occasions to be clever, resourceful, quick witted, forward thinking and has an ability to see the way the wind is blowing. (if she is a little single minded where Adora/She-Ra is concerned). She has even gone so far as to garner the begrudging respect of her subordinates, even if they do dislike her and have made that displeasure known, so she is capable of drawing others to her cause, whether just through fear, coercion and manipulation remains to be seen.

If she is indeed being sent to Beast Island through Hordak’s portal, we might see Catra gaining her independence, power and agency, rather than being held hostage by the orders of an overseer with their own agenda.

I have theroised before that Catra could well be a lost princess.

We might see her on Beast Island, becoming part of the community and rising to a position of power. She could very well end up finding her own tribe and be happy to remain there until she crosses paths with Adora and SW which will result in her having a round two confrontation with her foster parent, whose manipulation of her complex feelings caused her to be exiled.

Finding out that SW preyed on Catra’s confused attachment towards her abuser as a way to escape, throwing one child under the bus in favour of finding the Golden Child, who is already a huge bone of contention for Catra, will no doubt sour Catra towards Adora even further.

This is of course if Catra comes across the pair together, rather than finding Adora alone and on the run from her kidnapper.

Another avenue of thought is that Beast Island is as harsh as everyone believes and SW brings Adora there as a place where they won’t be disturbed as SW begins to enact a plan and we begin to learn more about Adora’s background, She-Ra’s origins and what exactly Mara was up to.

Catra just unfortunately ends up stumbling upon the pair and the three end up together, thereby giving Adora and Catra a chance to take small steps to repair their rather rocky and complex relationship as I don’t think there will ever be a time that Adora does not try to reach Catra somehow.

(The pair have some major unresolved issues with each other, and Adora carries a large amount of guilt at leaving Catra behind, but understands it is something she had to do in order to do the right thing. And its a case of getting Catra to also come on board, do the right thing, independently and not at the behest of others.

To do this whilst making sure that Catra does not feel that she is in Adora’s shadow or beholden to anyone is where in lies the problem, until Catra sees her own self worth and stops blaming Adora and believing that she meant her deliberate harm over the years.

They have a lot to discuss with concerns to SW treatment of the pair growing up. That both of them were children and neither in a position to be able to call SW out on her abusive BS.)

This post has gotten pretty long so I think Ill break it into sections, next time I’ll be looking at Adora/She-Ra and Mara and the rest of the Super Best Pals Trio.

Feminism and gender equality: Why does it suck?

First of all, this article is for Feminists, and is not contraindicated for women who are drawn into the Feminism movement without understanding the political tricks of the wire-pullers behind. I respect every woman. They are half of this world. I bet you'll agree with me on one thing: Women have always been honored for their direct and indirect contributions to human civilization. Because of that, I feel I have a responsibility to protect them from the malicious conspiracy of the Feminism movement.

In Vietnam, the liars call Feminism Feminism. But what RIGHTS? Where is the RIGHT? Which word in “Feminism” has RIGHT in it?

If you're not equal, don't be equal

It is ironic that Feminists are always anti-men, but covet their values. Value is something that takes effort to build, but cannot be asked to be recognized or given by others. To me, the value of a person lies in their usefulness. So be useful to family, friends and society; study and work kindly; serve and love the community. Don't compare yourself to others. Also, don't put others down, because it doesn't raise your self-worth. Because only what you do shows who you are in this world.

On the circle jerk of the art world

Tom Wolfe, author & journalist, is good at being scathing. Case in point: The Painted Word a brief diatribe against what he perceives to be the falseness and pretension of an elitist art world in a capitalist society.

I don’t know enough about art or the art world to agree or disagree with what Mr. Wolfe claims, but I do care deeply about art and its role in civilization. How it can help us, fix us, express us, or how it can’t.

His ideas, though, strike me as useful departures for my own future research, especially w/r/t Abstract Expressionism, my new obsession. Also—God knows I love a good contrarian, so here are some key points I’ve synthesized from his spirited lambast. For my own reference, mostly. Thanks, Tom.

Art must have its theory, i.e. the dictum du jour. “modern art has become completely literary”

Realistic 19th century painting dubbed “literary” thereby spawning its rebellious successor movements, i.e. l’art pour l’art

Braque: aim of art is not to reconstitute but constitute “a pictorial fact”

Greenberg’s theory of flatness and Rosenberg’s Action Painting became big theories picked up by le monde. Peggy Guggenheim then discovered Pollock, beloved of Greenberg, and gave him a place and money and set him off

Pop Art was then a reaction against Abstract Exp.

It was even flatter. Jasper Johns chose flat real life objects and made them look super flat. Like the flag.

(What else would you use? All major art forms are institutionalized in some way—literature, film, etc.—and draw upon its predecessors, are in conversation with lineage and history. I don’t see this as inherently “incestuous” but in practice in the art world perhaps it’s extreme or problematic... explore further)

Pop Art succeeded not because it rejected Abst. Exp’s premises of moving away from realism, but because it did AE one better: even higher level of not realism. Somewhere that was not abstract nor realistic but based on signs

Abstract Expressionists were too grim and antibourgeois, too bohemian. The Pop artists were right at home in the cultured world of the bourgeois

Steinberg: Modern art always “'projects itself into a twilight zone where no values are fixed'” and “'it is always born in anxiety'” and its function is to “'transmit this anxiety to the spectator'” to provoke “'genuine existential predicament'”

Pop Art was full of cultural and literary ironic commentary and allusions. Op Art, which came after, was also very literary in that it was heavily grounded in theory. Theory was taking idea of painting as real object and turning it into object of pure perception

All of these movements were a movement towards reduction, stripping away - first of 19th century realism, then representational objects, then the third dimension towards flatness, then brushstrokes.

Is that enough? Hardly.

Minimalists came and stripped away the “sentimental” colors and used gritty or ugly ones

Rosenberg & Greenberg (though sort of rivals) and others were against this - new style was “‘too much a feat of ideation.. something deduced instead of felt and discovered.’”

Then we got rid of the very idea of wall.

Moved into installations. Then museums (Earth Art).

What about idea of a permanent or even visible work of art? so next came Conceptual Art where they said it wasn’t about permanence and materials but the process

And then they took away idea of visual imagination altogether - piece called Vacant by David R Smith

My thoughts on this (provisional):

Art movements destroy to create. This is also true in literature, in everything. I find this a natural human impulse. We are meaning-making animals, and art is our way of exploring/expressing this process, and meaning is made inevitably by a destructive-creative process. Learning—and thus growth—is by necessity an act that displaces the dictums of yesterday to make room for the new. So I question Wolfe’s implicit resistance to the deconstruction of every assumption inherent to “art,” but I’m willing to challenge the “destroy for destruction’s sake” imperative, insofar as it is what drives the movements of art today. It sure seems that way, but I assume there’s more there, and the “more” is perhaps as varied as the people who further it.

To ask a naive question that probably Real Art has long since abandoned or mocked until it breathed its last, what about beauty???? As a layperson who wants to believe that art has a public role and some inherent value where beholding it can do something good, even by disturbing us, I often find myself lamenting the un-beauty of contemporary art. That this is probably because I don’t “get it” only further entrenches my sense of alienation from this world of art. Is there respite to be sought in, for example, outsider art?

Perhaps the answer is as simple as a simple comparison: take music. There is no possibility of defining “beautiful” music; we like what we like, and different people like different things. There are ways to get into a piece and understand what it’s trying to be and to judge it on that basis (also like a book) but no absolute criteria are possible because of the infinite variety of creative possibility. But even so, music and literature seem to me more accessible, somehow, than art. Less conceptual in the way art can be, more inclusive in terms of the gap between what the gatekeepers would deem worth canonizing and what we would claim to enjoy as outsiders.

To what extent do artists themselves (as if it’s a homogeny) want the “public” to “get” or “like” their art? A lot rides on this question I guess.

The beauty of the disturbing and the disturbing of beauty. Would this summarize where we find ourselves today?

(I suppose you could say beauty is taken out of the equation, but you could also reframe that as the expansion of the territory of the beautiful to encompass all, exclude nothing. Ironically. What I wish existed and whose absence consumes me to no end every time I enter a museum: a summary (impossible) of the timeline of the canon and what/who gets included and what/who gets excluded and why. Note that I’m not issuing the ignorant layperson’s tired old challenge of “My 5-year-old could do that.” I don’t mistake technical skill involved or duration of labor for the Good, but I do want the implicit curatorial values to be made legible, because I’m in a capitalist system that more often than not exacts a price from us to view or own art but I am then paying to engage with something whose value I don’t understand and am expected to receive fully by merely looking at something without the language or conceptual framework to understand its value, all while contributing to that value, reinforcing it. That seems like a scam to me (forgivable) but also like intellectual hypocrisy (unforgivable).

All of this is a rambling record of first impressions re: the art world and my access to an understanding of its values & criteria. Obviously a way to answer my own questions is to examine the world itself, anthropologically, and dissect its political/cultural/social/financial underpinnings. To learn the common answers, debates addressing these small questions of mine. Which I intend to.

But that these are the questions begged when one confronts the whole system as an ignorant layperson is worth noting in itself, I think, because it draws out some assumptions that are contradictory. Assumptions that imply that art is good and we should look at it and pay to look at it. Assumptions that also imply that beauty is not art and skill is not art and accessibility is not art.

So then what is art? And who gets to decide? We spend our lives taking for granted the fact of a museum, of an art history curriculum, of a canon of famous men and (sometimes) women who have made what we consider “Great Art” without ever being satisfied with a good explanation of why, how come, who says? Especially today?
