DRAWTOBER #13 - Wolves of Earth and Sky by Why_Live_In_Reality
Did Cloud Wolf recognise the odd Woodtroll child at the Lumberyard? Would it have been difference if Maris Pallitax had still been beside him? Would the most unlikely of families been able to find happiness together despite the Gloamglozer's curse? Basically I still have lots of feels regarding Quint and Maris, particularly how they just fell apart between leaving Sanctaphrax and Twig finding Cloud Wolf. Time to rewrite canon!
this fic rec is dedicated to the 2013 tumblr Edge Chronicles crew ✌ if you're still around here somewhere, go and read this now! I know posting Verginix family content is pretty niche in 2022 but ohhhh my god, this fic is EVERYTHING my baby self dreamed of; it follows an AU where Maris and Quint managed to stay together after losing Twig... and that one tiny change makes all the difference to their story! what I'm particularly loving is how 3D the author has made these characters - Maris and Quint may have their baby back, but that doesn't necessarily make them natural parents, or even good parents, and their respective parental trauma really informs the way they approach him. also, this isn't just a character study, or even a straight book rewrite, there's a whole new subplot introduced and it's so fucking great, I am on the EDGE (haha) of my seat waiting for the next update! a fixit for my beloved childhood faves (Paul, Chris, if you're reading this, I love you, but WHY is no one allowed a happy ending oh my god), but written for the standards of a grownup audience - what more could I ask for????

Is, is Edge Chronicles tumblr a thing? Because I'm revisiting my childhood faves!
I read them in chronological order, not publishing order. Is this controversial? Who knows, not me!
In any case, I've just hit chapter 6 of The Curse of the Gloamglozer and I'm having the BEST time

clash of the sky galleons is such a haunting book it's literally like maris has just recently been orphaned without any real time or space to process her grief and now has no one in the world left but quint. quint himself has learnt to love sanctaphrax, only for his father to pull the rug from under his feet and throw him and maris into a wild goose chase for revenge. wind jackal cannot be reasoned with; he is no longer the relentlessly cheery captain and loving father we meet in curse of the gloamglozer, but harsh (bordering at times on cruel), guilt-ridden and grief-stricken, to the point of insomnia. the book spends its time spiralling into tragedy, killing off one character after the other until wind jackal's death becomes not just obvious but an inevitability. there is nothing quint and maris can do to stop him, because this is a tragedy; all they can do is cling onto each other as the world falls apart around them. the characters we know must survive still suffer; we discover tem's traumatic backstory in between murders, and maugin holds the galerider together by literally setting herself on fire. even quint and maris aren't safe; both of them nearly die at numerous points throughout the book - of particular note is when they try to build a beacon, and quint's fear of fire makes itself known once again. thaw daggerslash is a chilling villain - he cares nought for the people around him, just for his own profit and betterment. quint begs his father to stop, to no avail; thaw murders wind jackal, and immediately tries to charm quint; as wind jackal's crew are murdered, he rapidly loses the will to live, refusing to eat or sleep. at points, his behaviour is frankly suicidal. clash of the sky galleons is so starkly different from the previous two books in how personal it is for quint and the fact that anyone who doesn't show up in the twig saga is doomed. one of the most striking passages of the book for me is when sagbutt and filbus queep die - the rest of the crew find wind jackal standing impassively over their bodies. the image is haunting.

nice illustrations. nice story. it is an original fantasy setting, and most of it happens within the great deepwoods forest. A young adopted elfish person looses his way in the forest.
Oh - note that some of it is not for too young - e.g- the bloodoak, the trogs. Maybe good for teens and above.
This is the first book I read that got me started in Edge Chronicles books. There are other good books such as midnight over santctaphrax, clash of sky galleons, vox, curse of gloamglozer, freeglader, and so on...
They are all very well illustrated...

Oh Reddus, you were right! I'll never ask my questions to the wind ever again! Now how can I break this awful curse?
I don't know, I am simply not one who says words carelessly and invokes such chaos.
In the Edge Chronicles there's a sequence where Twig, the main character of one of the series, while lost in the Deepwoods, curses and curses and curses his fate (using the name of specific evil boogieman entity, the Gloamglozer) and wishes his lot were different.
Well eventually the Gloamglozer does appear, and it reveals that it had changed Twig's lot in life, just as he had implored.
I think this is one of those situations.

2) Did you reread anything? What?
I didn’t realise I’d reread so many books last year lmao
The Curse of the Gloamglozer by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell.
The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson.
Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson.
Mistborn: Secret History by Brandon Sanderson.
All Systems Red by Martha Wells.
Red Sister by Mark Lawrence.
Monstress Vol.1.
Monstress Vol.2.
Monstress Vol.3.
4) Did you discover any new authors that you love this year?
I did! Some of the books I read last year are now on my favourites list, which is always nice.
Robert Jackson Bennett (after reading Foundryside)
Adrian Tchaikovsky (after reading Children of Time)
Gareth Ryder-Hanrahan (after reading The Gutter Prayer)
Yoon Ha Lee (after reading Ninefox Gambit)
12)Any books that disappointed you?
There are only two that are coming to mind:
Midnight by Derek Landy - I still enjoyed this, I’ll always love the Skulduggery Pleasant series, but I found a lot of the writing(narrative) choices really?? strange. I don’t like it when a series is finished and the author decides to continue it and add in a heap of new history/backstory that would have realistically been mentioned SOMEWHERE by SOMEONE in any of the 10 books that came beforehand. Especially if it’s BIG history/worldbuilding stuff.
The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell. I really enjoyed this up until a point, I think it was the ending that let me down - saw it coming and found it a bit predictable.
24) Did you DNF anything? Why?
I didn’t actually DNF anything last year. Yay!

honestly sometimes i wonder if it was really rook who broke the gloamglozer's curse because most of the parallels once can draw between the verginix boys (or occasionally keris) only apply to quint, twig and rook
