Good adaptations aren't scene by scene, line by line reenactments of a book. It's a completely different medium, that the creators can use to tell the story a different way. Besides budget issues (just writing a scene where a bunch of crazy stuff happens costs about $0, while portraying it on screen is a different matter), the pacing/flow is different in live action stuff than books.

The SPIRIT of the adaptation is what matters. The original PJO movies weren't bad because Annabeth's hair was brown or they didn't say the dialogue straight from the book or dare I argue, because they mixed in elements from further in the series. Rather, it was bad because the vibe was simply far too edgy. Percy was sassy, it did have humor, monsters were fine, but it fell flat on its face because it didn't understand its characters, its world, or its TONE. THE TONE. It was genuinely awful.

Good adaptations expand on the source material without losing the charm of the original. They understand what makes characters tick and what's at the core of the journey, its not about aesthetics or being faithful to the point of being dull and having nothing new to say.

The PJO series is doing that. Having Rick involved probably helped a lot. It has a rocky start, in my opinion. But from the second half of ep. 2 and into ep. 3, I see it gaining its footing.

#uh oh! pjo tv series opinions incominf #ive only seen up to ep 4 so far #but its interesting! theyre making a lot of character choices that i really love #grover underwood <3 my boy #his frienship w percy feels solid and real #annabeth!!! oml. and her devotion to athena and the way that relationship becomes more and more complicated as time goes on! chefs kiss #my only thing is that #and maybe this is bc ive read the books and i generally know the story #but its sort of boring???????? not like its bad necessarily or poorly done exactllyyyy #but theres a lot of scenes of them just sort of straight up explaining whats happening or the plot or how the gods feel #which to be fair. that also happens in the book and is kind of exactly how percy learns all the shit #so it feels a little tell > show atm #but its also a lot of worldbuilding info to get thru and possibly introduce the basics of greek mythology to new people #so obviously thats a lot #i wonder if ill feel the same after this first season finishes and if they will allow for more #time to focus on the encounters the kids have #cause i know who is coming up soon and im excited to see that #and i thought they did the medusa arc so well like oof wow!

Reasons to LOVE Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves

It's brand new in cinemas, so there are still plenty who ain't seen it, so if you're among 'em best skip this and just GO SEE IT, it's SO well worth it, genuinely it's one of the best new movies I've seen so far this year. Hope you love it as much as I did!

So, yeah, there you go - SPOILER WARNING, FOLKS!!! If you don't wanna get spoiled, RUN!!!

Still here? Okay, here we go then ...

This really is, UNAPOLOGETICALLY, a comedy. I mean yeah, this is a classic fantasy action adventure in the Willow, Krull or Ladyhawke mold, but it is also very enthusiastically POKING FUN at the classic conventions of the genre ... albeit CLEARLY done with great affection and love for the material, as only the best lampoons can be. So this is more The Princess Bride or Galaxy Quest than Your Highness or Spaceballs ...

Chris Pine is ALWAYS at his best when he's being FUNNY, so he is PERFECT here. Edgin is most definitely a bit of a douchebag, but he's the sweetest, most lovable douchebag you'll ever encounter.

Holga. Literally just EVERYTHING about Holga. She's my favourite character in this, this REALLY IS the best role that Michelle Rodriguez has EVER HAD, if you ask me. She's a total badass, a truly AMAZING FIGHTER, but I love that despite her dour demeanour she's actually quite sweet, gentle and really a great innocent in many ways. She's an absolute cinammon roll and must be protected at all costs.

OH MY GODS!!! All the easter eggs, SO MANY easter eggs ... FAR too many to count throughout, all the references and nods and winks to the game itself, all the spells and races and creatures and stuff ... but I love how the movie NEVER beats you over the head pointing any of it out, it just lets you enjoy it. So the proper fans will get a huge kick out of spotting it all, but casual viewers will just enjoy it as rich worldbuilding colour and flavour.

Seriously though, it's a D&D fan's DREAM!!! Not just the mimic, or the owlbear, or the gelatinous cube! SO MUCH to spot ...

Justice Smith's Simon gets THE CLEVEREST and best introduction in the film, I love the theatre scene, he's SO BAD at this while also simulataneously being really great. Totally sums up this gloriously clunky hot mess of a sorcerer ...

the opening is GENIUS, totally sets the movie up as it means to go on - the parole hearing is a brilliant comedic take on the scene-setting infodump which is brilliantly carried through in the way the movie delivers exposition in a fun way or just lets you absorb it through what's happening in each scene. This is the perfect, TEXTBOOK way to do it.

"That is one pudgy dragon!" LOL

Doric. Just EVERYTHING about Doric. Sophia Lillis' tiefling druid is a wonderful diminutive little action hero, so fiesty and capable. I love her. It's just a shame she's not primary coloured, I'd have loved it even more if she'd been blue, or red ...

The Wildshape Escape! XD Yeah, I love that, that's THE BEST set-piece in the whole movie, definitely, when Doric gets cught out spying and has to shapeshift on the fly to get away, and it all plays out in one immersive single shot that just leaves your heart in your mouth ...

Oh, the Speak With The Dead montage, that is comedy GOLD. Funniest scene in the whole movie. And with added payoff at the end! XD

Rege-Jean Page's Xenk Yendar. Oh boy, that paladin is something else. I love how LITERAL he is, he's like Drax in GOTG but much more intelligent. Y'know when Holga says: "You're not a lot of fun, are you?" to him? She's so wrong. I just wish there was more of him in this ...

The heist! Oh, the heist! So good ... the portal trick, it's great, love the way they did that, and then that HILARIOUS bard illusion distraction - Pine skipping the song like a broken record was just chef's kiss!

That wonderful wibbly-wobbly illusory reality thing whenever Simon tries to atune to the Helm ... wow, that is some spectacularly trippy shit. Granted, twice is fine for terms of pacing, but I could've done with a few more scenes of that, it's fascinating.

Hugh Grant really has just become a MASTER at playing smarmy, slimy duplicitous gits now, hasn't he? Forge is a reprehensible prick and I love it.

I love how they made Bradley Cooper a halfling for his cameo. They're never gonna let him live down the fact that he's now probably best known for playing a two-foot-tall talking racoon so forever after he will be a Short King.

Wow, Daisy Head's Sofina is a CRACKING villain, she's just SO CREEPY!!! I love how coolly menacing she is, a brilliant dark necromantic wizard that just makes your skin crawl. Especially at the end ... IS SHE a lich? Is that what they were doing there?

That whole big action climax, the showdown in the city centre is FIRE!!! It's so amazing, so brilliantly dynamic, with EVEN MORE great easter eggs! Simon and Sofina having an insanely awesome "arm wrestling" bout with Mage Hand versus Earthen Grasp (I think that's the spell, couldn't be sure), oh my gods! So cool ... and then the way they neutralised the threat! Brilliant.

Chloe Coleman's Kira is an absolutely adorable delight, and I think she's ENTIRELY JUSTIFIED in how pissed she is at Edgin for abandoning her. It makes the payoff when they finally make up so much better.

And that resurrection scene at the end? Yeah, sure, I saw that coming a mile off, but it was so well done, and they played it so well, that it was still SUCH a powerful scene even so. Just perfect.

Seriously, they just did this whole thing SO PERFECTLY. It's visually STUNNING, really it just looks AMAZING, and the action sequences are BRILLIANT but always feel entirely necessary for the story, which is how you want to do it. Best of all, though, is THE PACING!!! This is such a quick, breezy film, it just barrels along at a spectacular clip, so it never drags. Mark Kermode is right, even though this is two and a quarter hours long it doesn't FEEL LIKE IT, it feels like a super-trim 90-minute movie.

And it ties everything off nice and neat, too. Sure, there are definitely possibilities for the future, going forward if they make more, but if the movie DOES tank then it's fine, because this really does do a great job about feeling self-contained and telling its own complete story, so if we DON'T get more it won't be too big a disappointment ...

End of the Year Fic Rec

I was tagged by @echo-bleu and @dreamingthroughthenoise and it was very difficult to select only five fics for each category but here's my Must Read fanfics list, mostly Silmarillion but with a few LotR and one Hobbit. Also, I cheated at some point so you have one more fic rec as a treat

Recommend up to 5 series or multi-chapter fics from 2023 that everyone should read (multi-year WIPs count, if the last update was in 2023).

Summary: Elrond and Elros are sent to live with their distant cousins in a house that is crumbling slowly to pieces. They aren't especially happy about this. For Maedhros and Maglor, the twins are a rare chance to start living again.

Why you should read it: This is a whimsical, heartwarming yet bittersweet at times story about finding one’s place in a new world and what makes a family, grappling with the ghosts of the past and the pain of being a child left behind. Also the most exquisitely written modern AU (the style is just chef's kiss!) I’ve read so far, 100% recommend it!

Maglor is an Eldritch Horror by @thescrapwitch

Summary: After thousands of years singing to the sea, Maglor has become something strange and terrifying. But he still loves his family, and his family still loves him.

Why you should read it: Sometimes, family is a Half-Elf, his wife, their children, a shy and whimsical bard and the Eldritch kidnap grandfather who haunts the house; or how to write slightly creepy fluff. This series is pure heartwarming material and giving Elrond the happiness he desserves.

The Day the Horse-Lord wed the Lady of the Seas by @colinnoahmayhare (rated M)

Summary: After the War of the Ring, Lothíriel, Princess of Dol Amroth, finds herself at the receiving end of the search for peace and prosperity by being used as a pawn in an alliance made between kings and princes. Married to the King of the Riddermark, Éomer, she has to navigate being a foreigner in a foreign country, being a Queen to a King, and to learn to live and love with a man she hardly knows.

Why you should read it: This story is an intricate, gut wrenching exploration of what happens in Rohan after the War of the Ring, featuring delightful worldbuilding, lots of politics, revenge and honour. Now with Familial TraumaTM and Couple AngstTM for extra flavour!

And the Stars Shine the Same by @runawaymun (rated M)

Summary: After the Éothéod revolt against the Wainriders, the northern tribes seek to form strong alliances with their neighbors. Lord Frumgar tasks his son Fram to lead the delegation to Imladris. With him, he brings gold, fine horses, and two young thralls chosen by his father to be given to Lord Elrond himself. Elrond is conflicted to say the least.

Why you should read it: Do you like pre-canon Third Age history? Do you like worldbuilding about a few names from the Appendixes of LotR? Do you like found family and Good Dad Elrond? Do you like complex characters learning how to live with their traumas? This story is for you! (Just mind the warnings in the tags)

The ghost you dress up as (knows how to haunt) by @deadqueernoldor (rated M)

Summary: Maedhros was not the first Finwëan to be captured and taken to Angband, nor did he remain there the longest. Ranyatinwë, twin of Caranthir, was the first.

Why you should read it: Tinwë is such a complex character, 50% spite and 50% trauma, and this whole story is so, so promising already! (Really, you should read all the Strength of our Bonds series for extra unhinged, spiteful and unrepentant kinslayer Tinwë. I support women’s rights but in Tinwë’s case I firmly support women’s wrongs). This is pure post-Angband angstfest and dysfunctional siblings caring for each other in their weird way. If angst can be a comfort story, I found it.

Recommend up to 5 single chapter fics/one-shots (long or short) from 2023 that everyone should read.

Life in Miniature by @thescrapwitch

Summary: Turgon uses his hobby of building cities to recreate Gondolin, this time on a much smaller scale.

Why you should read it: For re-embodied Finwëan rebuilding their relationships as they work together on a miniature city; a heartwarming and really nice metaphor.

Hearth Fire by @dreamingthroughthenoise

Summary: Findis and Feanor speak before the Flight of the Noldor and share in their grief the best they can.

Why you should read it: Because there are so few stories centered around Findis and her feelings about her family and this one is so interesting and well written. Also, Findis is my Blorbo and everyone should read about her until they're consumed by the Blorbo.

your veins are empty of dust by @echo-bleu

Summary: Anairë finds her late one day in her workshop, surrounded by slabs of stone larger than her. Nerdanel is hammering forcefully at one of them, the barest hints of an elven shape already taking form in the marble. Bitter, stinging tears run down her cheeks and into her collar, and her arms ache with exhaustion.

The body is only barely sketched, but the face is already chiselled, smooth curves and angular cheekbones.

Fëanáro emerges out of the marble, looking like he’s about to take life.

Why you should read it: For a heartbreaking dive into Nerdanel's grief, her friendship with Anairë and how Nerdanel's art becomes her way to cope with loneliness and grief.

Summary: Elwing's time runs out.

Why you should read it: Because these may be the 740 most impactful words I've read about Elwing since I discovered the Silm fandom.

soldier keep on marching on (waiting on that morning sun) by songofswiftsunrise

Summary: Boromir lives. The world is the smallest bit brighter for it.

Why you should read it: Do I need a more convincing argument than what the summary says? Boromir lives and everyone is happier. I love a good fix-it and this one is very well written indeed.

Recommend up to 5 fics NOT from 2023 that everyone should read (oldies but goodies.)

The Carpenter’s Son by Zimra (rated M, warning for rape/non-con)

Summary: An untold story of conquered Dor-lómin, in which an Easterling carpenter has a child by his Hadorian slave.

Why you should read it: This story explores in a very interesting way a par of canon that is almost never mentionned (except in the Narn). The main character is attaching and I really cared for her and her son. The hindsights in the slavers' minds are chilling with their realism and this whole story is just so well written. Also, it ends on a note of hope.

And what I am needs no excuses by aurembiaux

Summary: Sam has always been in love with Frodo. It's only that it takes him forty years to realize that he is.

Why you should read it: Probably the most heartwarming and relatable self-discovery story I’ve ever read; set in England from the WWII to the 80’s, with all the social changes that happened in this time period. Featuring Supportive Dad (and Friend) Sam as the main character and a whole bunch of introspection. One of my all time comfort read!

Mark of a Warrior by starryeyedknight

Summary: After the funeral for Theoden, Merry wakes up to a problem experienced by many a young man after a night of heavy drinking. The ink on his arm doesn't appear to be washing off…

Why you should read it: This one shot explores the relationships Merry formed with the RIders of Rohan, the grief he has in common with them and how he found his place amongst the riders, all of this with delightful humour and lightness despite the initial situation.

Dancing with my punchlines by LiveOakWithMoss (rated M)

Summary: In which the sons of Fëanor throw house parties, the beer is terrible, 20-something hipster elves act like their drama is as bad as it is in canon, and macking on cousins is fair game.

Why you should read it: If you like a good old modern AU with tons of drama of various sorts, amazing ace representation and general Finwëans shenanigans, this is the story for you.

Old Maggie Took by @deadqueernoldor

Summary: The headcanon about Maglor, second son of Fëanor, lives hidden in the Shire? Yes.

Why you should read it: My ultimate comfort read series; featuring mouth-watering descriptions of food, kidnadopted fam and Maglor being an overgrown hobbit and trolling everyone in ME and Valinor. This is fluffy, this is silly, this is prefect.

Recommend up to 5 of your own fics (completed or WIP) from 2023 that everyone should read.

Dreams of Doom (rated M, warning for Major Character Death)

Summary: “She runs in the dark, alone. Where her feet carry her, she knows not, and her heart is heavy with dread. Someone - something - is watching her.”

Niënor from the moment she arrives in Brethil to her death.

Why you should read it: Because this fic is my firsborn child and I am insanely proud of it, especially since I went so out of my comfort zone to write it. It features two of my obscure blorbos and I poured my soul into it.

Ice Age(s)

Summary: Ice skating through the ages, from Idril learning with her grandfather to Elrond perpetuating the familial tradition.

Why you should read it: This is a fluffy fic, mostly, and it's also a gift for the amazing @echo-bleu. I also wrote it in a sort of trance in the middle of the night, passed out the moment I posted it and had no memory whatsoever of what I had written upon waking up in the morning, yet I still love this fic dearly.

I never wanted to walk in your steps

Summary: Tilda was ten, the same age Sigrid was at her birth, and her world was collapsing more than when Smaug had destroyed Laketown.

Why you should read it: Because I privately call this fic Hobbit angstfest. I took a sad, doomed ship and asked myself "how can I make it sadder?"

ar ámen apsenë úcaremmar

Summary: Few know of Findis the Faithful, eldest daughter of Finwë, who never lost hope for her family.

Why you should read it: I took my obscure blorbo and set her in a medieval-ish AU. It's sad and a little hopeful too and there's a lot of Quenya interspaced through the story.

Quiet morning in Gondolin

Summary: Idril and Eärendil spend some time together before the city wakes up.

Why you should read it: I'll put the link to the beautiful art that inspired this ficlet and let it speak for me.

SALAAR (SPOILER ALERT)

continuing my tags from a previous post (sorry 😭 @deadloverscity) : like i said, i do think salaar is a good story so far. I like the world-building, I like the tribe coalition system that becomes a background for our story, and i like the fact that varadha and deva are in a toxic yaoi relationship.

im not gonna lie tho, i just haaaate the cinematography and lighting in prashant neel's movies. it's always a bad time there. It's like slapping a vignette over every frame of the movie, and it takes away any colour whatsoever. I understand that he wants to go for a dark vibe, but trust me, dark vibes can be achieved even without making the entire movie dark and invisible. I literally cannot see the actors doing any action! It's bad! It's not enjoyable. As a typical Telugu moviegoer (and assuming the movie was made for a predominantly telugu audience), I enjoy a somewhat vibrant colour scheme. So far, in all of our movies and even the mega movies (if you have watched RRR and Baahubali) there is a lot colour and imagery going on in the movies. I think in Prashant neel's cinemas, all of this is taken away. He has a set of colours that appear in his films consistently - which are black, grey and red. This colour scheme i feel, if repeatedly used, can be a bit boring and may take away the vibrance of the story. the stark contrasts (imo) do not emphasise the story, they overshadow it. still, take this w a grain of salt.

However, considering the fact that this is just his fourth film, ill cut him some slack. But man, if he is going to make movies for a telugu audience, i hope he lets go of the vignette filter.

next, the worldbuilding. i like it - here is a country that is completely separated from india, yet dictates certain aspects of it. i like that they chose an isolated place that evolves in parallel with the mainland, but retains the values of the tribes, making this place mythical and real at the same time. i was really intrigued by the tribe lore - about how the mannars ousted the shouryangas, and how rajamannar basically went against his own father's rule-book and is now facing dire consequences from bharava, whose tribe has the right to the throne right now. i also love love love loveeeeeee the fact that deva is the rightful heir to the throne - and also also the fact that whether he knows about this or not is left ambiguous. i love how this adds another layer to amma's hatred of khansaar and OH. MY. GOD. chef's kiss i love it.

as a personal taste, i don't like violence and epic fights tm overshadowing the narrative, which i feel the movie does. however, kannada film-making might be different. idk, i havent seen many kannada films other than kantara and kgf. the former is good i absolutely love it - the story is fantastic, the fight scenes are chumma, ufff i can praise it for days. the latter is pretty meh for me.

another thing i love about the movie is.. well, varadha and deva. dude, what is up with telugu guys unintentionally making queer movies these days? what is up with that yallll??? ohmygod. when i tell you that i smelled the romance im not lying. dude. dudeee. the whole friends to enemies to (maybe) friends/lovers arc theyve got going on? oooh baby i can feel the fanfics writing themselves. the whole soaked in blood-fighting-together scene? it was a miracle i wasnt jumping up and down on my seat. the dialogue in that scene 'i have friends more handsome than you' and then varadha getting kinda jealous and shit. lovely. the whole don't touch him thing that deva has got going on - baby boy just kiss him. and man. it's beautiful tragic and im writing a fanfic.

soo yeah this is my rant about salaar. im expecting something from it lol.

Decided to rewatch NATLA to properly form my own takes that’s been running through my mind: (I’ll have both things that I like and dislike.) Part 1

SPOILERS!

I like it like a friend from a hundred years ago:

First and foremost, NATLA predominantly consists of Asian American Pacific Islanders. Good for them for creating a version that is more in their lens and creativity.

The Bendiiing. All of the elements, except for Earth, are 10/10. I really want it to be more solid, especially on AangvsBumi. It’s not that bad though, so much better than…well u know. I’ll give it an 8/10.

I rewatched it with a Filipino dub and it’s good, 9/10. Aang VO was convincing as a kid, so either they’re a great actor or a great kid actor. The jokes (Sokka’s sarcasm) hits better on my mother tongue

The costume. The only one that I do agree with everyone else that lacks is Zuko’s scar. They should’ve put prosthetics on the eyebrow.

Zuko’s hair? Hello? They did a great job. Even though my sister and I sing Ariana Grande song whenever we see them swaying. It’s an integral part of his story, and I loved that they keep it. There’s an East Asian culture that indicates that kind of haircut as a punishment. I remember my History teacher taught me this in eighth grade but I forgot which it was, my bad. And the actor’s such a champ for having that hair IRL.

My favorite actor performances: Gordon (Aang) superb acting. Liz (Azula). Utkarsh (Bumi). Justin Wong (Chong/SecretTunnelguy) sounds exactly like the character. Made up for my delusional expectation that Dee Bradley Baker would be in this. Ken Leung (Zhao) pisses me off so much, and that means he’s doing a great job. Dallas (Zuko) & Iroh (Paul). DDK's(Ozai) a natural idk if that's acting /j

Was it established in the OG that Katara's intro is a folklore/legend? Because yeah, I don’t mind that it is considered that way in this version.

AAAAA, the Lieutenant Jee younger casting makes so much sense now! The 41st division is chef kiss. Zuko cryiiiing when he was being banished!? Dallas Lui ate!

THE HYBRID ANIMALS LOOOK SO GOOD. The ostrich horse blended well with whoever rides them. It doesn’t look CGI to me. MOMO HIS MOMONESS, MOMO OF THE MOMO DYNASTY

Any Zuko fight choreography (MY FAVORITE CHOREO DALLAS LOOKS FIIIRE). And Aang’s too (Oh hey).

How Ozai’s forced unity/being totalitarian is represented. Reminds me so much of our own government, it amuses me. I know it’s not directly referencing that though. It’s good that they show it early on I guess. With the Fire Nation culty greeting as well.

On a lighter note: THE AIR SPHERE/BALL whatevah, yes! More of this goofiness. How about instead of being inspired by GOT, NATLA should be inspired by Stranger Things in terms of fantasy + childhood simplicity balanced by this trauma they're going through. (Well, ST lacks worldbuilding cause it’s just normal Earth but anyway)

They incorporated the OG character theme songs! Of course! The ones I noticed right away are the FireNation Siblings’. So if you watched OG Avatar and you watched the scene where a mysterious girl joins the infiltration of the FN Royal Palace, you’ll know who she is.

Sorry not sorry, Daddy Dae Kim is daddying. (Although he did catch me off guard in Zuko’s Agni Kai lmao.) The plot.

The Aang VS Zuko fight! A reference to the Fortune Teller fight. The team did so well.

CGI’s great did not waste any money

In Katara’s flashback. She experienced this in her present form. And when she was so scared to go to the place where her mom was killed, she immediately changed back to her young self. Like, I wanted that so bad when I was watching the flashback. I thought, this shouldn’t be the present-day Katara. There should be a moment when she switches back to young again. And they did.

Big Iroh moment that makes you cry as an adult when Gyatso was reassuring Aang that the genoc*de wasn’t his fault, and shouldn’t blame himself. Ahh, and the subtle sadness as they say goodbye.

Random eye drawing from Zuko. He’s an artist AHAHAHAH. Okay, I forgot which episode. Sincerely, unreliable narrator.

Basically every scene/plot they 1 by 1 copy from the show. Did not disappoint (well, maybe because OG showrunners were there). Blue Spirit, Siege of the North.

Gaang teamwork scenes! It works and it's dynamic.

Hahn as an honorable man? Yes. I don’t like love triangles so much. I like me some camaraderie. And Ian (Sokka) acted well for feeling included and seen as Hahn recognized his value as warrior/intel.

Zutara fight scene.

Two points that I don’t know if I like but it makes me realize some stuff:

Meek Katara. I know there are specific plot points that Feisty Katara is needed. But she was always nurturing, so I think it makes sense she’s…meek? That Jet scene explains it. Maybe because I relate to her being a log AHAHAHAH. But yeah, uh, I do not, ironically, have strong feelings against that water down.

Angry Bumi. IDK how to feel about him tbh. I always think Bumi is…harsh like that. Almost scary. But yeah, he never blames Aang. Still, it doesn’t feel out of place here. He will return anyway so he’s not this one-dimensional character that is only angry at his friend (hopefully). I never thought of how Bumi would actually feel. And that he will be upset, and now it’s sad because that’s like your friend when you were twelve years old and you wonder where he’s been all this time, and if he’s alive. And..war..never made it any better to process that emotion. So, we got two versions, one that is cautious and then eventually welcomes him, and another who's completely angry and blames a literal kid that he does not know the pain (from the war). Too real, and I personally don’t mind.

Answer: as a marine biologist, I-

the dragons came after the beasts. I wanted to give them a reason for existing and 'knights fighting dragons' evokes such a great retro fantasy vibe that i loved it. The reason Pantera is a leopard (and not any other kind of big cat) is because in medieval bestiaries, leopards were said to fight dragons using their 'sweet breath'. You can see where I went with it. But dragons in these bestiaries have such variable appearances and can be virtually anything, like you said they're so versatile. For the people in this setting, the most they ever really see of dragons are the legs, tendrils, and the massive beak (which is mineralised like the pen of a squid). It's a creature really too big to comprehend, so they depict it in their diagrams as a bird-headed creature with wings and a back end made of serpents. but you can always tell in these illustrations whether the artist has actually seen a dragon in person.. because they won't draw it like this:

Answer: I'm going to draw some diagrams to explain but basically the theocratic empire sits on a massive wealth of iron ore so there's no shortage of it. Smiths can manipulate metallic elements using the dialogue tattoos on their palms - Mercury and Mars are the titles for enginesmiths and armoursmiths respectively. Enginesmiths use mercury because it doesn't interact with incandescent dragonsblood, and it's a liquid metal which in alchemical theory is Pure and extremely close to gold (free of sin u might say). The quicksilver is used to manipulate the insides of a working engine without having to physically touch it. Armoursmiths work on iron, but here's the issue: solid metal won't budge. It needs to be softened or liquid for the dialogues to have any effect. So the armoursmith teams are blacksmiths who heat up these mass amounts of iron using dragonsblood furnaces until the iron is malleable, and then in teams of 50 or more they slowly and painstakingly stretch and shape it into the desired form. that's how they make armour plating for Holy Beasts. The use of dialogue tattoos isn't like psychic telekinesis, but more like playing an instrument where the position of each finger has to be perfectly accurate in 3D space to produce the desired effect. it's a very physical job and incredibly skilled. Taurus's barge took decades to construct and thousands of workers.

But ALSO when i draw them, I follow the ref sheets for big parts but mostly bullshit the details because who give a shit at the end of the day if I put a screw wrong, no one's going to care

you move to dayshift but aren't paid more, go figure by @/tuzesdays! DAYSHIFT MY BELOVED!!!!! It's currently on going and it is SO FUCKING FASCINATING I GO APESHIT WHEN THIS SHIT UPDATES MAN; Tuz's take on the Y/N is such a fresh and interesting take on them and the way they interact with the boys and the people around them is -chef's kiss- wonderful. It updates once a month, but there's a really good chunk of it out as is!

Forever Friends by @/restinsodaroni! THIS GODDAMN STORY FUCKING FUCK IM SO GODDAMN INVESTED AND YOU GET BANGER ART AT THE END OF EACH CHAPTER AND ITSGHFSJJHGFSJHEGFHGBRNBRNAAAAA; the way the plot goes!! The twists!! The characterization!! MUWAH!!! I don't usually like stories where the boys are separated (at least for pizzaplex stories), but the way that it's handled in Forever Friends is so gOOD

Days of Laughs, Nights of Screams by @/justaduckarts! Another story by Duck oops they write bangers- admittedly I'm not finished with this one yet, but from what I have so far- GODDAMN DUCK DOES IT AGAIN!! I wasn't sure how to go about this one for a hot bit, even as it was ongoing, but now that it is finished: it's honestly such a fucking delight reading, man. From what I have read, the worldbuilding for the carnival is so vivid, it's hard not to imagine such a fascinating scene! The same with the boys and other characters! They're all extremely distinct both in design and in personality!

GTWAC Day 4: Share One Of Your Favorite Scenes From A Creator

Okay so I know I'm late and that I haven't done all of these so far but I wanted to hop on the bandwagon, and when I read the prompt for day 4 I immediately had a story in mind!!! (I promise I actually had this in mind it's not just tag-backsies asdikgbfdlfgkjsadh)

So, the scene that immediately came to mind for me was from the Royalty story by @coffehbeans, specifically from the first part which is an older piece of writing from her (late '22) but I just love it too much to not mention it aaaaaaaAAAA

So the story follows the human Princess Estelle and the giant Prince Alaric, who find themselves forced into an arranged marriage by their parents, for the sake of the human kingdom. This story was the first of coffeh's that I read and I was sooo hooked with the worldbuilding and the characters and the descriptions (the descriptions are so so so good)!!! I couldn't stop reading once I began and was so so excited when the third part came out!! (And I just spontaneously reread all three parts instead of finishing this post lol)

Spoilers below the cut! Please go read the story if you have the chance it's so good aaaaaaaaa (and honestly all of coffeh's writing is really really good asiufghafhds) Here's the link to the first part and here's the link to her masterpost which includes all her stories. :)

oKAY after rereading I had a hard time deciding which scene I wanted to talk about because there's multiple that are just so good and deserve their own post, but I'll stick with what initially came to mind for me!

So there's this scene in part one where Estelle is getting ready to leave her kingdom and go with the giants, and as she's picking up her luggage an eye looks at her attentively through her window. She falls to her knees and a cry for help threatens to escape her throat. I just really love this part!! Just-- I love how Alaric is looking at her probably with curiosity more than anything, watching this tiny human in this tiny room moving about. And Estelle, she wants to cry for help but it's all so overwhelming and between that and her duties as a princess to go through with everything she must feel like she's unable to cry out for help and just-- asdkhfksfhalslsalkdja

And the DESCRIPTIONS you guys, like, chef's kiss. The trembling of the ground, the windows shaking, the dust falling from the ceiling, I really feel like I'm there!! I can see everything in my head really vividly!!

And I love when Estelle gets outside and looks at Alaric for the first time, and realizes he was the one who looked at her through the window. How she's wondering if he'd be a good suitor if he were human like her and she's trembling in terror at the same time!

And the way the humans flinch when Alaric sets the glass cage down-- like, first of all being afraid because of his size but also just the idea that they're being presented with something so utterly inhumane and they have no choice but to have Estelle go through with this for the sake of the kingdom--!

And! And! The pained sobs from the queen, crumpled up on the ground and not caring if she's drenched by the rain--

And just, the last thing I really love is again the descriptions, specifically those of how Estelle is affected by the size of everything and everyone around her (and this goes for the whole story in general like later there's a scene with a swinging chandelier in a doll house and that really made the size difference sink in for me). The ground trembling. The being knocked about without end in the glass cage and ultimately getting knocked out by the harsh movements. Just!!! It makes it all so much more believable!

Guys if you couldn't tell I really love this story. Please go give it a read if you haven't!

And coffeh, I'm so so so looking forward to your future writing, with these characters or otherwise!!! (And I know there's some stuff I've gotta catch up on from you that I haven't had the chance to yet so I do have that to look forward to for now asafjkhsfsajlkdha)

1. Name the best book you've read so far this year. It would have to be Babel by RF Kuang. It took me two months to get through the first half, but once the ball got rolling the whole story utterly captivated me. If you're looking for a deeply intellectual read that combines geopolitical history, linguistics, and integrative fantasy worldbuilding, Babel might be for you!

17. Favorite finished book series. Trying desperately hard not to seem basic but the original Percy Jackson series has had an ironclad grip on me for over ten years. Although, now that I think about it, I don't know if we can consider PJO a finished series, so I'll also submit the Hunger Games and the Six of Crows duology for holding a place of equal importance in my heart.

22. Favorite example of a Chosen One trope in a book I gotta give it to either Percy Jackson or Frodo Baggins from Lord of the Rings. Prophecy/fate might have chosen them to some extent, but each character chose to accept it and the responsibility that came along with it. That's just *chef's kiss* a satisfying narrative arc babey.

25. Favorite Middle Grade book(s). Ok if we just set the Percy Jackson series to the side because obviously it's going to win in every category, I was very fond of the Hardy Boys: Undercover Brothers series. Like, one of my core memories involves going to my local library and picking up a stack of those books. I could read two/three a day, and I read every single book in the series multiple time.

35. Least favorite trope in your most favorite book genre. My favorite book trope is fantasy. My least favorite trope would have to be giving a character physical/mental disability and then immediately negating it via magic—or, more broadly, actions not having correlating consequences. I think that's why stories like the Poppy War or How to Train Your Dragon or Lord of the Rings have had such a profound impact on my psyche. Characters make choices that have long-lasting consequences—Rin loses one of her arms, Hiccup loses his leg, Frodo never mentally or physically recovers from the burden of carrying the Ring.

47. What are the last three books you read? Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut, Letter to the American Church by Eric Metaxas, and The Stolen Heir by Holly Black.

This 100% goes to @homebehind for making me cry, smile, yell with excitement, and hang on every single one of the words she strings together so beautifully. She has a writing style that mimics all of her characters' personas--- whether it be the rhythmic structure to her sentences, descriptions of character's reactions, or the symbolic subtleties of her word choices. And it's not only her writing for threads, but also her writing for meta/headcanon posts! The level of thought and worldbuilding she puts into writing those metas is simply *chef's kiss*. Her writing feels like she reaches into the depth of her characters' hearts with such understanding that makes us, the readers, feel like we're learning more about who the character is far beyond whatever is going on in the plot.

Immediately, without question, the lovely @marblecarved. Mona is quite possibly the sweetest mun in the rpc. She regularly posts greetings and well wishes for everyone, reblogs all those messages on being kinder and more understanding to ourselves, and sends the embodiment of sunshine via ooc messages. Her posts have brought a smile to my face, and I am certain that other mutuals have smiled because of her, too. A true gem and all around lovely person!

Definitely @therapardalis! Thera is one of those characters I can't imagine this rpc without. I've been lucky enough to write with Thera with muses of mine across blogs in different universes and fandoms, and no matter the setting, Thera just belongs there. She's the kind of character who instantly feels like someone you'd meet at a pub or out walking about. Thera has tenacity and wit. She enjoys life in the moment whilst also having been through A Lot. She is kind but also takes no shit. She can be a friend to all, but is not afraid to stand her ground on what she believes in. Thank you for creating her story and sharing it with us! <3

Honestly gotta say, the lore setup of the world alone has filled me with Such intense emotions bc CHEF'S KISS nothing beats world building for me, i want to learn All the Things, no matter how wild or mundane

as such, Twilit has caught my attention for their own interest in knowledge, atop being overall very intriguing to me ( shoutout & air kisses to my darling Heluur too ); the deep irony is that i have severe mottephobia, to the point where even just thinking abt moths ( or anything moth-related ) for beyond a few seconds results in prolonged nausea on my part, which kinda really sucks fhrjjdjf

nonetheless i am determined to at least TRY to woo them, as Largely Beyond Human Comprehension & Old AF are def favored traits of mine to find in characters

ironically i ended up going with this fairly lowkey set of moth wings because i thought their original concept would be too scary skbsdfg. in the end i figured i'd keep the original concept as a "true form" of sorts; all of the older and more powerful demons have to do things in order to make themselves Small, in order to Fit inside hell, so much of Twilit's being is. Elsewhere lmfao

i do have a faceclaim for their humanoid avatar that mc mostly gets to interact with haha, which i don't for most of the other ROs. so maybe that helps?

i'm going to spoiler the True Form description for people who don't want to look at it and also possibly just because it's. spoilers, i guess? however i don't think this is ever going to be a Reveal, it's just not obvious at first glance looking at them.

it's not super advisable to look directly at Twilit's true form unless you want a bunch of psychic damage, but obviously other archdemons are capable of Beholding them fine. they're Huge, with differing layers of loosely-connected corporeal form overlapping; the. central body? is squid-like in shape, though the skin is scaled and tough rather than an actual squid's blubber or whatever, with a mass of long tentacles that extend from the uh... torso? the head/face region has that... let's say "conical" squid-shape but augmented with bony plates and cilia that evoke the biblical descriptions of angels, with a halo like a burning wheel and so forth. circling the body is a shroud of moth-like wings that can fold up in on themselves or unfurl based on their whim - when unfurled, they vibrate with a loud humming, buzzing noise. black in colour; they have no visible eyes, ears or mouth, but no matter which direction you look at them from, they always seem to be watching you.

it's not particularly new ground as far as eldritch beings go but i enjoy a good tentacle... Conceptually i mean. they were actually not a demon in this original iteration though haha... they were an elder god. so. things change!

I love the worldbuilding about the fungus. The part about the mycorrhizal network(s) that makes the infected communicate was GREAT. The stuff about the fungus is my favorite part so far, in both episodes. Especially the two intros with scientists first conjecturing and then now actually seeing a fungus like that. *Chef's kiss*

And of course, I love the sarcasm and reluctant interactions between Ellie and Joel xD.

I'm pretty shy online, so I'm sending this anonymously, but holy fuck I love your Fae!Gilbert x Reader fic.

It's so fun! Like, the world building works so, so well on multiple levels. It works well to bring out interesting characterization (the violence? and the pining? *chefs kiss* perfection!). And it also foreshadows and sets up plot things to circle back later on really, really well (and I fucking love good setup ahdbsjdk). When Basil was talking to Reader/Maus about soulmates, I was like "haha it'd be funny but unlikely if Gilbert and her were soulmates... unless?" and then it happened and it was so so good and fit into the fae lore established reaaalllly early on about knowing the right questions to ask!!

Like, your plotting and worldbuilding and setup are so damn good, and they all inform the characterization which blends hetalia canon and fanon and takes the fun parts and amplifies them and I love this so much. When I started wandering back into hetalia fic after 6+ years due to marukaite chikyuu on a road trip, this has been a goddamn treat!!

And the characterization! Fuck, I love how Gilbert is portrayed in this, and every hetalia character that's popped up so far has been likewise incredibly enjoyable to see. Hot damn is this good, top tier fic here.
