So, I’m making tarragon chicken, but the recipe I’m using is from a middle-earth inspired cookbook my little brother got for me a few years ago. The recipes are mostly only tangentially related, but the ones I’ve tried are mostly pretty good (though I altered the brandywine fish pie, mostly because I like shrimp, but I can’t stomach the idea of shrimp in a pie). But. But.
1. This tarragon chicken recipe is called “Turin Turambar’s Tarragon Chicken,” which sends me every time I make it.
2. The little blurb above the recipe is basically, “Turin’s life was an undending hell of misery and woe. Hope he got to eat something tasty before he died. Like this recipe!” and it sends me even more.

I hope Pikmin 4 makes Nintendo considered making a pikmin themed cookbook. I know themed cookbooks kind of aren't looked in high regard but come on, Louie's piklopedia entries are right there. (And also, if not, that there is a fanmade cookbook made eventually).

Behold! My Final Fantasy VIII-themed Dinner
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In case anyone is curious...
Cocktail - Quezacotl's Thunderstorm
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pretty simple - Vodka, orange juice, (meyer) lemon juice, and plain seltzer served in a light-up novelty glass. (not pictured: the logo on one side for the Christmas event it came from LOL
Appetizers - Mini Hot Dogs and a Balamb Garden Salad
Tumblr media
Each ingredient of this salad is representative of a different enemy that you fight in Balamb Garden at some point. There's iceberg lettuce (glacial eye), Radicchio (Grat), grape tomatoes (Bombs - the red ones are literally called sugar bombs), honey goat cheese (Granaldo), candied walnuts (raldo), green goddess dressing (green like caterchipillar), and tajin (something with a bite for bite bugs). I think this would have come together better if I had made the dressing, but I will be happy to have this for the lunch for the rest of the week.
The mini hot dogs were frozen from a box lol.
Side Dishes - Malboro Tentacles and Mashed Norg
Tumblr media
The Malboro Tentacles are extremely tender, slowly cooked asparagus with A LOT of garlic (need that bad breath), and some chili flakes for spice. I also threw in some soy sauce for color. This is exactly how I imagined they would be when I set out to make them, so I am pretty happy about it.
Tumblr media
Norg - pointless boss, great side dish. These are pretty basic buttermilk mashed potatoes but I wanted to maximize the yellowness. I used yukon gold potatoes (even peeled them, which I never usually do), a dash of tumeric, and lots of butter. That wasn't quite yellow enough so I dug to the back of my spice cabinet and found the saffron I was given as a gift and can never seem to find a meal special enough to use it for. HONESTLY, these were so good. Definitely going to do this again.
Entree - T-Rexuar Steak
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was REALLY worried making these. I've made steak before but I usually use pretty simple seasoning. But for a T-Rexaur, I wanted the outside of the steak to be reminiscent of a T-Rexuar hide. So I actually marinaded the steak in a Tikka-like sauce (paprika, cayenne, tumeric, ginger, garlic, lemon, yogurt) because I was looking for redness. I have NEVER put yogurt on steak before - YIKES what a risk. When I took them out to come to room temperature before cooking them, I patted excess marinade off and added a generous amount of salt, paprika, chili powder and garlic in hopes of creating a redish crust. Then I seared them.
Guys. I don't know if it was the marinade or what but this is some of the best steak I've ever made... or even had. The crust was excellent and the steak was so tender. Def getting a permanent +1 to strength for this one.
Stay tuned for dessert!

It's been a couple days since I was reading through the Sonic cookbook and strangely I think I have to conclude that the five nights at freddys cookbook i acquired as a joke (and because i thought maybe my niece would be impressed by it but she never visited me to see it...) has probably a better understanding of what recipes make sense to include in a cookbook where a large part of the target audience is children. Because the Sonic cookbook is breaking out ingredients like Bone Marrow and 4 Whole Tilapia (you have to skin them yourself but I think you keep the eyes in.) while from what i recall the fedy cookbook i think was like. Salmon burger. Mac and cheese with things in it. Like kind of adventurous but still reasonably within "children would eat this" range. It's very easy to imagine a child finding something they'd want to make in the freddy cookbook but I think in the Sonic cookbook they'd be stumped for a bit. and its just a bit odd. That's my review of the 2 novelty video game cookbooks I own I know you didn't ask about this. You have to hear about it anyway.

Lovecraft related items are making more and more appearences in main stream America. Pictured below is the 3rd cookbook published recently featuring Lovecraftian themes. To the right are packs of Tarot Cards inspired by HPL's works. Not too many decades back, however, actual hardback collections of Lovecraft's tales printed by ARKHAM HOUSE PUBLISHERS could be found on the shelves of bookstores like Barnes and Noble. These books featured the newer full color cover art that Arkham House switched to when the less refined 2 or 3 color covers were dropped. (Exhibit 457)

Queen's Cake from The Fort George Bill of Fare and vanilla chai tea before tonight's War of 1812 book talk!
This actually is a more old-fashioned style of cake, as prepared: it only uses whipped egg whites for leavening. The spices are equal parts nutmeg, mace, and cinnamon; I added slightly more of them plus a dash of brandy this time—excellent decision. Unleash your inner Georgian rake and put some brandy in a recipe today!
@acrossthewavesoftime there is a quote from Elizabeth Simcoe on the adjacent page!

🍭 for the book cas meme!
🍭 - Create a Sim based on a book you enjoyed as a child.
Tumblr media
Let it be known that I was the biggest bookworm back in the day, so there were definitely a lot of possible options for this one! I toyed with possibly making Anne Shirley (Anne of Green Gables) or Jo March (Little Women), but ultimately decided to go with Laura Ingalls from Little House on the Prairie (and the entire Little House series as a whole) as I'm certain my eight year old self would not forgive me if I didn't. 😂😂

tasha's cauldron of everything has had my favorite supplementary items out of any of the books i've read So Far because it includes shiftweave (CLOTHES THAT CAN BE OTHER CLOTHES IF YOU WANT THEM TO??) and magical tattoos, including my favorite which i have given to amity, the masquerade tattoo
the spell it contains isn't powerful; it's just a once-daily disguise self
but the tattoo itself can move and change on an action, so that's a fun little party trick. a way to keep the kids you're babysitting entertained. that's my favorite kind of lore; low in power, high in fun
but i haven't actually had the time to go through most of the new ones yet, and i fucking love the feywild, so my favorite may change
