Here is my contribution to Our Favorite Scene Zine latest edition, which compiled over 20 artists’ interpretations of the reunion scene from THE HOUSE IN THE CERULEAN SEA. This book was my first inroad to TJ’s staggering body of work, and remains one of my comfort books at times when my faith in humanity is challenged, or when parenting two smarty-pants gets particularly hard. 😅 From the outset, I wanted to focus on the kids’ reactions to Arthur and Linus’s reunion, because love is something that children inherit from their grownups, and that joy multiplies as they grow up in safe and accepting spaces. I hope you like how it came out. 💕

Do you ever think about what the THITCS kids grow up to be? Here's what I picture;

Sal becomes an author who writes under a pseudonym and takes over the orphanage when Linus and Arthur get older

Chauncey starts as a bellhop (obvi) but makes his way up to be a hotel manager and is adored in the village

Thalia will be a kid for another 300 years (adopted by Phee after Linus and Arthur die) but eventually I think she'll open a public garden to share her love of gardening with others

Phee and Theodore stay on the island with Zoe

And Lucy ❤️ I image he's in the arts. I think he goes on to Broadway, at first just playing villains but eventually he plays heros and lead characters. And people are in awe of his voice and dancing and emotion on stage

I just imagine them all having really nice lives because Arthur and Linus taught them how to be strong enough to follow their dreams despite adversity

this is who i think the THITCS characters play as in mario cart. 

linus: mario - he is mario because he just is and that he doesn’t really care who he plays as

zoe: rosalina - she’d probably be like “oh she looks fun :)” and she’s also probably like really good at the game for no reason

lucy: king boo - need i say more?

talia: toadette - i have no evidence for this one she just gives off this energy

phee: daisy - okay phee plays to WIN. her and zoe just dominate i swear

chauncey: yoshi - i will take no criticism thank you and good night 

sal - shy guy and not because of shy guy’s lore but more because he looks kinda funny and this is sal’s only reason for playing as him

theodore: baby luigi - i have once again nothing to back this up

arthur: his Mii character - and i say this because i guarantee he was like “none of them look like me and i want to play as myself” and arthur does not understand the game whatsoever

Theodore (the wyvern from T.J. Klune’s The House in the Cerulean Sea) demands coins for his hoard. But in the event coins are not available, he will very happily accept a shiny brass button. 😂 Drawing this adorable iridescent little dude has been the highlight of my week.
