Survey #463
“the siren sings a lonely song of all the wants & hungers  /  the lust of love, a brute desire”
Describe the person that you would like to be in three years. I want my mental health to be in great condition, I really want to be in much better physical shape, ideally be living with somebody in our own place, have a job I'm happy with, have an improved social life, my own license and car... Think back to when you first met your significant other (or ex). Was your first impression of them accurate? It's funny, I honestly don't remember what my first impression of Girt was. I don't even recall our first interaction. I'm sure it was most likely that he was friendly, because he is and always has been. What is your most noticeable personality trait? Probably that I'm really, really shy. What kind of natural disaster is most common where you live? Hurricanes. Which of your family members do you resemble the most? I guess one of my immediate sisters? People tend to say stuff like they can definitely tell we're related. Have you ever had an animal get into your attic? No. Who knows you better than anyone else? Hell, probably whoever reads these. When was the last time you started a “new chapter” of your life? I guess you could call dating Girt a "new chapter." I have a much, much stronger feeling of this attempt being more successful than the last now that I've been able to change my angle on how I see him. What’s the most expensive thing your car needed to get done? I don't have my own vehicle and never have. If you had a thousand dollars to spend on a pricey brand you like but can’t really afford (until now of course), which ONE brand would you choose? *shrug* Most products of highly expensive brands I find hideous anyway. Do you still talk to any of your old teachers? Yeah. One is a close family friend and actually our landlord. Does your family still use the home phone or are you all on cell phones now? We haven't had a landline is yeeeeaaarrrrsssss. Ever go to another school’s prom? No; my boyfriend went to the same school as me. Do you ever venture into the woods? What do you normally do there? No; we live in the city now. :/ When I DID live in the woods, I absolutely loved wandering around with my camera for stuff to take pics of. Does your significant other ever make you mix CDs? None ever have but omg I wish that would be adorable. How did you dress your freshman year of high school? I was one of them emo kids. Would you ever date your best friend of the opposite sex? WELP that's what I'm doing lol. Would you say you have a high sex drive or not so much? I'd call it normal? Higher sometimes, lower other times, but not to either extreme. Come with an unpopular opinion. Silent Hill: Homecoming is a great game and while there's a lot of fan service from the movie, it belongs in the series. It's actually my second (or third)-favorite installment. Most of the SH community absolutely hate that game. What’s the worst thing a friend has either done or said to you? A lot of shit Colleen would say if we got into arguments. She'd ridicule effects of my depression, said I'd never know what it's like to pay my own bills, stuff like that. She's hateful as fuck and everything cut deep. What’s fake about you? Like extensions, fake nails, botox etc. Nothing physical. If you got the chance, would you audition for a reality show? No. Have you ever gotten into a Facebook fight? More than once. What’s the cheesiest thing you’ve ever experienced irl? Hm, I'm unsure. Favorite flavor of jelly bean? Probably watermelon. Do you use Tinder? If yes, have you ever met up with someone you matched? No. You do you, but if I understand Tinder correctly, it just seems... really shallow to me. Like don't you JUST see their picture to decide if you're interested or not? It just enforces the false belief that appearance really matters in love. You just poured your heart out to your crush and all he/she does is respond “k”. What do you respond/do? Well, I don't have a crush anymore; my boyfriend and I literally exchanged "I love you"s last night. That's not a crush. But for the sake of the question, I'll imagine I was single and this happened, in which case I would be both hurt and annoyed. Like, either tell me you return the feelings or not. It's not hard. What's your favorite thing to order from McDonald’s? I usually get a quarter pounder w/ cheese or a McDouble, occasionally with a small or medium fry, depending on how hungry I am. When do you feel your sexiest? Never, hunny. What's your favorite emoji? I don't really have one? It just depends on what the situation calls for. What’s your skincare routine? I don't really have one... I just use a washcloth to clean my face. Who all out of your immediate family smokes? My dad and stepmom. Do you like incense or candles better? Incense, totally. Do you respect your parents? Yeah. What’s your bf/gf’s name? It's technically Donald Jr., but since high school, I've known him as Girt, a nickname I won't explain for his privacy. Do you wear glasses? Yeah. Do you like The Beatles? I honestly don't. Except "Hey, Jude." What was the last reason you got excited? Last night. When we were saying goodbye, I was scared to, but I told Girt I loved him, and he immediately said it back confidently. My heart did like five flips. I'm still over the moon about it. Yes, we just got back together, but we've been in each other's lives as a constant since HS, and after changing my angle of how I looked at him, it's not at all platonic anymore. Do you know anyone who drinks the pickle juice from the jar? Sara does alskdjfklwejrl;er Name something crazy that’s happened recently? Uhhhh... I dunno. My life is very uneventful to have something really "crazy" happen. Can you say for a fact that you’re happy right now? I'm happy about some things, but also nervous and self-doubtful. Have you ever zip lined? No, but they look fun. I'd just be really scared of losing my grip. If you broke your computer, would you be able to fix it on your own? Ha, no. Have you ever been on a boat and got sick? No, but the one time I was at the beach and on a boat riding to an island, I was TERRIFIED I was going to get sick because of the waves. I didn't, thankfully. Did you sleep well last night? For the most part. My new mask might just be working. Do your parents try and plan your life for you? Not at all. Do you have any pictures of you kissing someone? Yes. List two things about yourself that you find embarrassing. My weight and how dark my leg hair is. Do you like to cuddle with your pet when you are sad? Yes. Do you find piercing attractive or unattractive? h o t Do you have any secret hiding spots in your room? To put money, yes. Do you like parmesan cheese on your spaghetti? Ew, no. I don't like parmesan. Does your best girl friend have any talents that you don’t? Yeah. She can animate well, for one. And sing like a fucking champ. Do you have any video game systems in your room? Which one(s)? My Nintendo DS Lite is in here. Well, and my laptop is a gaming one. What color eyes does the last person you kissed have? ... Oh WOW I've known this man for a fuckin decade and somehow I'm not sure??? But I want to say light blue? Have you ever taken a ride in a helicopter? No. Have you ever visited hot springs? No. How slowly or quickly would you say you eat? I'm aware I eat too fast, because my mom will point it out almost without fail if we eat in sight of each other. I'm not a messy eater at all, just... fast. Chewing your food and swallowing isn't a complex task. I've made active efforts to slow down, I just haven't been able to succeed. It doesn't feel normal. That and I've come to discover that when I chew food TOO much, I don't like the mushy texture of it in my mouth. What did you do the last time you were with friends? Yesterday Girt and I planned to watch shitty Netflix anime for some laughs, but we wound up starting Attack on Titan, which I am officially pretty into. What kind of cologne/perfume do you like the opposite sex to wear? I don't care if they wear any or not, so long as they know how to clean themselves and therefore not actually smell bad. If you celebrate Christmas, do you get a real tree or an artificial tree? We always use a fake one. Is there someone who means a lot to you but they don’t know that? My sisters probably don't, really... Is money important to you? Live your whole life poor and I want to see you answer "no" to this. Have you ever watched a meteor shower? No. Do you like Slim Jims? LOOOOOOOVE them. Would you rather write a mystery or love story? Love story. Are you muscular? No. Working for it. Do you have one of those removable hand-held shower heads? Yes. Originally, this house didn't, but I hated it so much that Mom bought one. How many burners does your stove have? Four. Has your car ever been broken into? Mom's hasn't.

Billboard #1s 1988
Under the cut.
"So Emotional" -- Whitney Houston -- January 9, 1988
It's either a song about cheating or about being hung up on an ex. She's got a love of her own, but she's "so emotional" with this other guy, and keeps a picture of him by her bed. Um, does the other guy know this? Maybe she needs to have sex with the other guy so she stops being obsessed with the touch of the previous one. It's a dance song, and I like the beat, but it's painfully repetitive in the second half. Also, while I've known the chorus to this song very well since it came out, I thought it was a normal love song until I looked up the lyrics just now. Houston doesn't sing it like she's in any pain -- well, except I bet her throat hurt from the oversinging.
"Got My Mind Set on You" -- George Harrison -- January 16, 1988
Super repetitive lyrics. But the music's really fun, and I love what lyrics there are. I wish there weren't so few, though. "It's gonna take a whole lot of money" harks back to the many Beatles songs where they sang proudly about spending money on women they loved. Still, this is an example of how George was the best solo Beatle eventually. The video's cute, too, and obviously lampshades the idea of George Harrison doing backflips and dancing.
"The Way You Make Me Feel" -- Michael Jackson -- January 23, 1988
Michael Jackson was no Janelle Monáe. On so many levels. In this case, he wasn't anywhere near her artistic standard. This song does have the lyrics "Oh I'll be workin' from nine to five/ To buy you things to keep you by my side," but it sounds more like a Beatles rip-off than a tribute. I actually didn't remember this song at all, and the video is one of those annoying 80s ones that takes an entire minute to start the song. Then Jackson does a whole bunch of "woos" and "ows" and all that stuff he did that worked in moderation. But "moderation" was not what he was doing in 1988. In any way. He actually oversings in this. I turned it off halfway through. And immediately turned to Janelle Monáe's "The Way You Make Me Feel," which I adore.
"Need You Tonight" -- INXS -- January 30, 1988
This is one of my favorite songs. It's incredibly sexy, obviously. I didn't really notice it until I was around 15, and then I NOTICED it. As I got older, the song got better. The lines "You can care all you want/ Everybody does yeah that's okay" have meant so much to me ever since I started dating seriously. Because caring was not what you were supposed to do.
Anyway, this song is phenomenal and I love it.
"Could've Been" -- Tiffany -- February 6, 1988
This song was #1 for two weeks, and all the previous ones from 1988 have been one week. How? It's a heartbreak song that starts with the lyrics "The flowers you gave me/ Are just about to die," which is painfully on-the-nose. They'd probably work in a country song, but this is lite pop, not country. Tiffany occasionally seems to be trying to do some country stuff with her voice, which is smart. But that's not enough. It's not a terrible song, but it does nothing for me. I don't remember ever having heard it before.
"Seasons Change" -- Exposé  -- February 20, 1988
Speaking of songs I haven't heard before. I like this one though. The music's pretty interesting, especially the melody. The singing's excellent. And the music behind "seasons change/people change" sounds exactly like some of the music from Persona 4, so I wonder if Atlus' composer was influenced by it, unconsciously or not. It's just a couple notes, though. Lyrically, the song is about being in love now but realizing it might not last. It's good. I'm gonna look up more of their music.
"Father Figure" -- George Michael -- February 27, 1988
The music for this song is great, and George Michael as usual sings wonderfully. But um. There are some kinks that make me run screaming even when they're really mild. "I will be your father figure/ Put your tiny hand in mine" are two of them. So if you enjoy this song, I'm happy for you, it's musically lovely. I will be going to take a shower now.
"Never Gonna Give You Up" -- Rick Astley -- March 12, 1988
There was a time when I would have easily been able to have an opinion on this song. That time was long ago. It's hard to hear as a song now, rather than an internet meme. But I will not give up. (The video has almost 9 million views, sheesh.)
Okay so they're friends and now he wants a relationship. He says "You wouldn't get this from any other guy," which is a total jerkass line. Other than that, the lyrics are -- oh who am I kidding, I can't do this.
"Man in the Mirror" -- Michael Jackson -- March 26, 1988
I try to separate the art from the artist. That's in both positive and negative directions. If I love someone's art, that doesn't mean they're a good person. If I hate it, that doesn't mean they're a bad person.
This song, though -- "I'm starting with the man in the mirror/ I'm asking him to change his ways" -- uh yeah. Liar. And it's wedged in with all this "oh you should care about all the starving kids and homeless people" self-sanctification that Michael Jackson always protected himself with. This song disgusts me.
"Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car" -- Billy Ocean -- April 9, 1988
Speaking of disgust. Yay street harassment!  I've never heard anything bad about Billy Ocean as a human being though. But I'm not listening to more than 5 seconds of this song. Gross.
"Where Do Broken Hearts Go" -- Whitney Houston -- April 23, 1988
She's singing to a man she wants to get back together with after they decided they needed some "space." There's a lot of naivete in the song -- "And if somebody loves you/ Won't they always love you?" No. Even if they do still love you, that doesn't mean it will work. But maybe it will. I've never gotten back together with someone after a breakup, though I've been asked to many times (percentage-wise.) I've always had an allergy to it, both because my parents got back together after divorcing and should not have, and because I had a friend who broke up with her boyfriend and got back together with him at least 8 times in the space of a year and I had to keep hearing about it.
So this song doesn't really speak to me. But it's pretty good. Houston sings it well too, reigning in the oversinging until near the end.
"Wishing Well" -- Terence Trent D'Arby -- May 7, 1988
That's an awesome name. The writer of this song said he wrote it when he was half-asleep, which makes sense. "Butterfly tears", okay, just poetry, but you want to fall in love near a well of crocodile tears too? Doesn't that mean you're faking? I like the song though. It's sort of funk, but softer than full-on funk. I like the way D'Arby sings it. The whistling part (keyboard whistling) is very enjoyable. It's a fun song, and one I do remember from the time.
"Anything for You" -- Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine -- May 14, 1988
A pretty breakup song. But, of course, I have an issue. "I can pretend each time I see you/ That I don't care and I don't need you/ And though you'll never see me cryin'/ You know inside I feel like dying." Well that makes his life a lot easier, doesn't it. The whole song is about how she'll do anything to make him happy. Urgh. She needs to tell him to get out of her life so she can make a brand new start.
"One More Try" -- George Michael -- May 28, 1988
Yet another heartbreak song. It's not surprising that I remember so few songs from this year. I feel like I'm back in the 60s before The Beatles again. Though this year is musically better, I'm still bored. Anyway, in this one, the narrator doesn't want to try again, and he keeps addressing the person he doesn't want to try again with as "teacher," which is... a thing. The only time he seems willing to try again is the very last line, which is "Maybe just one more try."
It's slow, it's pretty enough, it would be unbearably boring if George Michael weren't such a good singer. I'm bored anyway. No wonder we ran screaming from anything smacking of this kind of thing in the early 90s. I feel stupid and contagious.
"Together Forever" -- Rick Astley -- June 18, 1988
He certainly had a brand, didn't he? The song title tells you everything you need to know about the lyrics. The song sounds a lot like "Never Gonna Give You Up," but much more boring. A massive drum machine intro can't carry this. I do recognize the chorus, but that's it. The song is fine, really. But that's it. It sounds like a lesser knockoff of "Never Gonna Give You Up."
"Foolish Beat" -- Debbie Gibson -- June 25, 1988
Heartbreak song. Sigh. There's a nice cheesy saxophone that I like, at least. She left him and she regrets it and thinks "I could never love again/ The way that I loved you." Nope, it's never the same. That doesn't mean it's worse. It's often better. I'm not listening to the whole thing, not even in case the sax comes back. The song's too dull.
"Dirty Diana" -- Michael Jackson -- July 2, 1988
It's about some groupie trying to seduce poor widdle helpless Michael. I don't remember ever hearing this song, and it's musically whiny too. Yuck. So much yuck.
"The Flame" -- Cheap Trick -- July 9, 1988
Heartbreak. Song. Again. "You were the first, you'll be the last" oh no they won't. I entirely approve of being honest about heartbreak, but this year is just crushing with the monotony of it. At least there's a beat to this one.
By the way, in the video, the lead singer's hair appears to be made of straw. Ah, the late 80s, when people thought cooking their hair was the way to go.
"Hold on to the Nights" -- Richard Marx -- July 23, 1988
A heartbreak song in disguise. He's in love with this woman but they can't be together. Are they cheating? I don't know. I don't care. It's so boring, words and music both. Even the piano is blah.
Speaking of late 80s hair, it looks like Richard Marx used an entire can of Aqua Velva on his in the video.
"Roll With It" -- Steve Winwood -- July 30, 1988
This was a #1 hit for four weeks, and I know why. It's not boring! Or depressing! It's got kind of an old-fashioned soul sound: Horns, groove, lyrics. When life is too much, roll with it baby. Not profound, but this is a really good song. One I've heard quite a lot, too, on purpose and everything.
Also, Steve Winwood's hair would work fine today. Coincidence?
"Monkey" -- George Michael -- August 27, 1988
This is actually kind of a heartbreak song, but not really. The one he loves has a "monkey" on their back and he wonders if they love it more than they love him. Addiction is my guess. It's a high-energy dance song, though -- it sounds a little angry, not sad at all. I find the melody sort of dull, but at least there's a beat. But I'm sorry, "Why can't you set your monkey free" is an absolutely hilarious lyric, and I can't take this song seriously in any way.
I think I had the hat George Michael's wearing in the video.
"Sweet Child O' Mine" -- Guns N' Roses -- September 10, 1988
Okay, yeah, sort of a heartbreak song, the relationship sounds like it's a mess with "where do we go now?" sung a zillion times. But it's so good. SO good. And it's rock. It's no wonder that it's one of the few songs that have stayed around from this list. It's not some kind of mass-produced pap without personality. Only Guns N'Roses could do this. Great song, I love it, and I love it more knowing what came before it. Man, Slash can play.
"Don't Worry, Be Happy" -- Bobby McFerrin -- September 24, 1988
Yeah, I'm guessing people were horribly sick of all the overproduced depression on the charts this year. A lot of music critics, and other critics, were really nasty about it because of the simplicity of its lyrics and its earworm-ness. And we made fun of the phrase plenty as young teens in the 90s. But now? I think it's pretty good. Philosophically, it's a mess, but the music isn't serious so I don't think we're supposed to take it seriously. And I like a-cappella. It was played way too much back in the day, though.
(Robin Williams is in the video, which made me tear up. Oof.)
"Love Bites" -- Def Leppard -- October 8, 1988
Technically about heartbreak I guess, but I feel like they're lampshading all the songs from this year which may as well have had the same title. Probably not intentionally. I can't take this song the tiniest bit seriously. It's rock, but not with a lot of personality. Any hair metal band from the time with interchangeable bleached blond frontmen could have done it.
I think this guy used an air fryer on his hair.
"Red Red Wine" -- UB40 -- October 15, 1988
One is supposed to hate this song, or was I don't hate it. I was a kid when it came out, the pop reggae appealed to me, and I still find it fun. Neil Diamond, the original singer, likes it. I certainly find it more interesting than anything with Neil Diamond singing on it.
"A Groovy Kind of Love" -- Phil Collins -- October 22, 1988
It's a cover of a 60s song. "Baby, you and me/ Got a groovy kind of love." This version is incredibly slow, and doesn't have any interesting drum work from Phil. It doesn't make me angry, but it doesn't make me anything. It's there. My brain wandered off and I started looking at stuff on the internet while trying to listen to it.
"Kokomo" -- The Beach Boys -- November 5, 1988
I loved this song as a kid and no one is prying it from me. It makes me happy when I feel down. I got the Cocktail soundtrack this is on for Christmas in my stocking 1988 -- me and seemingly every other kid, I think the tape was massively on sale. I loved the soundtrack, and I especially loved this song. I will never see the movie. I always felt that the song was a middle-aged man singing to his middle-aged wife ("pretty mama".) Which I thought was sweet. I figured that's what middle-aged people did, went off on vacations to tropical islands sometimes, even though my parents never did. I want to though.
"Wild, Wild West" -- The Escape Club -- November 12, 1988
"Heading for the nineties," hm? Well one of the lines is "give me, give me safe sex," and safe sex messaging being absolutely everywhere was an early to mid 90s thing. It's always funny to hear someone with an English accent sing about something extremely American. This song does sound like it's heading for the nineties musically, which is good. Only heading toward though. It's okay, but not very interesting. The music is repetitive. I got bored halfway though.
"Bad Medicine" -- Bon Jovi -- November 19, 1988
Your love is like "bad medicine" and he's addicted. Like a monkey on his back. What's with that phrase this year? I don't recognize this song. It's overproduced, it's shouty, there's too much going on, and it feels like it's trying too hard. Nope.
"Baby, I Love Your Way/ Freebird Medley" -- Will to Power -- December 3, 1988
I'm used to the 90s cover of "Baby, I Love Your Way" by Big Mountain. And I don't think I'm being biased when I say the Big Mountain version is significantly better. The lead singer of this one, a woman, is way too breathy and mannered.
The "Freebird" portion is bad. Just plain bad. The man singing is also breathy and there's absolutely no oomph. Also a lite, bouncy pop song in which the woman is singing how much she loves the man and the man's like "no I gotta be free" is blech. It does not work.
"Look Away" -- Chicago -- December 10, 1988
This was Chicago's biggest single. The narrator's ex called him to tell him she's with someone new, and he pretends to be happy for her, but wants her to look away so she doesn't see the tears of a clown -- er, no, that's a better song. Same idea though.
A heartbreak song, but I don't mind it, because it's got some blood to it. It's not slow and there's a real beat. Also Peter Cetera wasn't with Chicago any more, so Bill Champlin's the lead singer here, and he's so much better than Cetera it's ridiculous. Champlin brings some guts to the song, he doesn't sing through his nose, and he sounds truly heartbroken. Worlds better than Cetera. So it's a good enough song, if you're in the mood for that kind of thing.
"Every Rose Has Its Thorn" -- Poison -- December 24, 1988
I never minded this song before at all, but I am so sick of this kind of song at this point. Whine whine whine every cowboy sings a sad sad song. You're no Johnny Cash, dude. He said something wrong, he doesn't know what it was, they broke up and he still doesn't know why -- okay, who does this? Actually wait, I know one person who did this, and he keeps saying he has no idea why either of his wives broke up with him and I do because I was there and they told him they would break up with him if he didn't change. Over and over and over and over. And now he's like "poor me, I don't know why this happened. " He probably doesn't, either. He cannot admit fault.
Anyway, projections of my own personal trauma onto a hair metal band aside, the narrator’s ex is now with someone new and he thinks "I never meant that much to you." Maybe, maybe not. Cowboy, change your ways today.
BEST OF 1988 -- "Need You Tonight" by INXS and "Sweet Child O' Mine" by Guns N' Roses. WORST OF 1988 -- "Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car" by Billy Ocean

Japan: What is one stereotype you associate with Asian countries/people? :/ :/ Uhm...
Jelly Bracelets: Do you have any? In which colors? Have you ever broken one? I seem to have forgotten what these refer to, but I’m sure I had a couple that didn’t last long. I wasn’t much into bracelets as a kid. Joakim Berg: Who is your favorite foreign singer|musician? Do you translate his or her lyrics? Beyoncé, I guess. All Americans are foreigners to me. I don’t translate her lyrics, nor do I do that with any other songs in English.
Josh Todd: Do you have any tattoos? If yes, what made you decide to get them? No, but I’d love a couple that symbolize important things or people, like a bowl of nachos for Nacho and each of my dogs’ pawprints.
kent: Say something in a foreign language? The word ‘kampana’ is Filipino for bell.
Kundera: What is one philosophy you have regarding life|living|purpose? Idk, I’m starting from scratch after the shitstorm that was this year. I have to find one again. I’m not rushing, though, and I want to give myself as long as I need to regather. Fuck knows I need to be kind to myself right now.
Learning: What is something you enjoy learning about? Off the top of my head, anything that doesn’t involve machines tbh. I can read about anything Wikipedia and encyclopedias have to offer, but I draw the line at factories and automobiles and engineering and robots and stuff lmao, it’s just not my thing.
Minimalist Interior Design: How would you design the inside of your own home? You already mentioned it; minimalist. I don’t want a lot of furniture and a lot of color in my space. I’d be happy with a minimal number of items organized in a meaningful way with some pastel shades here and there.
Miserable Weather: What is a weather-type that you like that not many others do? Thunderstorms, I guess? It’s been a hit or miss for me these days though; I’ve found myself crying more when it rains...but for the longest time I’ve enjoyed bleak and rainy weather. I’m not planning to drop it as my favorite just yet.
Morning: Are you friendly in the morning, or are you barely awake? I’m friendly at work from the start to the end of my shift because it’s the nice thing to do, and because I have to be. But I’m almost always anxious and on the brink of breaking down every morning. Since it’s WFH, no one from work has to know that.
Music: How important is music in your life? It’s slowly becoming significant again. I got a Spotify subscription for myself after years of sharing with Gab’s account lol, so I’ve been revisiting the music that I had to set aside for months while I had to grieve on my own. It was brutal the first few days and I cried a lot when I heard my go-to sad songs again, but I soon realized I need releases like that and so I’ve been a little more unafraid to listen to music each day.
Oasis: What is a band you remember liking from your childhood? Paramore? HAHAHAHA they were the first band I ever loved, man. And I’m happy I get to say I still very much love them.
Opinions: Do you ever get mad at people for not having the same opinion as you (i.e. Abortion being wrong|right, Meat-eating being wrong|right)? If it’s the kind of opinion that will step on fundamental human rights, like being vehemently against same-sex marriage, then we will have a problem. Otherwise, I don’t care if someone prefers Android or having pineapples on their pizza unless they’re being an asshole about it.
Orchids: What is your favorite type of flower? Does it grow where you live? Peonies. Idk, I guess so? I don’t speak flowers.
Outerspace: Do you think there's a possibility of life out there? There sure is; the universe is so vast. I wish we’re able to learn more in this lifetime, though; I wouldn’t want to miss out on future discoveries.
Photo-Editing: Do you edit any of your pictures? In what ways? Sometimes I’ll add a cute or flattering filter; that’s the furthest my editing skills go. I don’t use advanced applications like Photoshop and I don’t know how to remove moles or stray hairs or whatever.
Photography: If you like to take pictures, what is your motivation? I’m not into photography per se, like it’s not a hobby of mine or anything; but I do like taking photos of special or funny events. It’s nice to have a memento for a little bit of everything going on in my life.
Poland: Would you ever consider living anywhere cold? Yes. Maybe not Norway or Finland levels of cold, but somewhere considerably cooler than the humid hot mess I currently live in. When I went to Jeju four Aprils ago, they had the p e r f e c t temperature I could ever ask for and it was sooooo perfectly and comfortably cold in that I got to walk around in shorts but I never shivered or got goosebumps.
Potatoes: What is your absolute favorite food? It used to be burgers, but my mom has been making so many cheeseburgers the last few weeks that I need to take a break from them lol. Right now, my favorite would be sushi.
Questions: Do you like to ask questions, or answer them? Answer them, hence this blog.
Quirks: What are some weird things about you? Depends on what you count as weird. By far, people have been weirded out the most by the fact that I don’t eat fruits and will avoid them like the plague. I don’t mind the reactions and it’s actually turned out to be a great icebreaker, so I whip out that factoid pretty often haha.
Quizzes: When was the last time you were tested on something? I had a blood test last May because we needed to know if my fever was dengue or something else. Turned out to be a UTI.
Radiohead: Do you like any depressing bands? After Laughter is sad as shit but I wouldn’t say Paramore is generally known by this image. None of the other bands I listen to would count as ‘depressing.’
Rings: How would you describe the size of your fingers? They’re long and slender, which I love.
Satire: Do you enjoy political satire? It’s a hit or miss. I generally don’t seek it out.
Singing: Who do you know personally that has a nice singing voice? Leigh.
Skinny Jeans: Would you wear them? Or do you hate them? I wear them, but I hate them.
Smashing Pumpkins: Listen to the band, or take it literally and actually GO smash pumpkins? xD Neither.
Snakes: Would you ever wear snake-skin pants, or other animal clothing? I used to wear leather shoes because it was required for school. I avoid the practice now.
Snow: What, to you, is the best part about snow|snowy weather? You tell me, lol. I’ve never experieinced snow before.
Space: Do you like to have your own space? Are you independent? It’s definitely important to have it every now and then; I’m actually taking this survey from a Starbucks because I needed so baddddd to get out of the house. It’s the first time I’m out on my own without having to do errands since March, and it feels kinda nice.
As for being independent, I’ve been mostly a dependent person and I like having people to lean on, but my breakup has also been pushing me out of my comfort zone and to try out new things just by myself. We’ll see where this takes me in a few months.
Starry Nights: When was the last time you gazed at the night sky? Last Saturday.
Stockholm: What foreign country would you like to go to for a shopping spree? Do I really have to go to another country for this? Hahahahaha idk maybe Shanghai? The people there were dressed so well when I visited.
Studded Belts: Do you own any? What do you think of them? Nope.
Suave Shampoo: What is your favorite shampoo scent? Brand? I don’t have a preference for either. As long as it’s able to clean my hair, it’s fine.
Sunglasses: What kind do you own|wear, if any? Do you like them? I don’t really. I don’t like my vision getting tinted.
Surveys: How many surveys do you think you have taken since you've started? My old survey blog has nearly 1500 while this one has a little over 1000, then add what’s probably a few hundreds that I did in 5th grade but never saved anywhere...so maybe somewhere between 2500 to 2700 in total? Hahaha I honestly thought it would be more.
Sweden: Do you ever feel like you should have been born in another country? I think nearly everyone from the Philippines thinks this.
Swedish Fish: What is a candy you often enjoy? Gummy anything.
Tea: Do you like tea more than coffee, or the other way around? I love coffee; I’m drinking one right now :D I never enjoyed tea.
The Beatles: My brother gets mad if people say they aren't the best band ever; what about you? Then I guess I shouldn’t be talking to him.
Theories: What do you think will happen to you after you die? Sleep.
Thom Yorke: If you met your favorite musician, what would you ask him|her? If we were in a Covid-free society, all I’d ask for is a hug, really. I wouldn’t have anything to ask them.
Thought: What do you spend most of your day thinking about? I’m still grieving about the stuff I’ve already covered.
Thought-Provoking Conversation: What do you consider deep? This would be a little hard to verbalize and I don’t really feel like describing rn. I guess you can say this question in itself is deep, ha.
Tokyo: Where is a busy place you would like to go to? Aw man what an innocent question. I wish I could show this survey-maker what a trainwreck 2020 has been and how ‘busy places’ virtually don’t exist anymore, at least for now.
Unpretentious Gestures: If someone pays you a compliment, do you take it to heart, or do you pass it off as just flattery? I take it to heart, but I’m not always able to receive it well.
Video Games: Do you think they cause people to become violent? No. I spent my childhood going on killing rampages on GTA and I’m still unlikely to resort to violence.
Vocabulary: What was the last word you learned? The term ‘low latency.’
Warsaw: What is a funny fact about your heritage? Good question, but I can’t think of any at the moment. I don’t really think ‘funny’ when I look for facts to absorb but now I want to look this up haha.
Web Design: Have you or could you build your own site? My principal requirement for my Online Journalism class was to make my own website/blog, actually. But Covid blew up and we ended up having to cancel the entire semester altogether, so my classmates and I never got to pursue more of that class other than our first few meetings, which were used for lectures.
Winter: How long|cold are winters in your area? It does not even exist.
Words: How many pages of words do you think you type a day? Maybe like 5 or 6. It’s a WFH set-up, so I’m exclusively on the laptop typing away the entire week.
Writing: Do you try to avoid it, or do you embrace it? I embrace it as long as I don’t have to write fiction or prose. I like writing, but only through journals and surveys.

John Lennon x reader (friends to lovers ploy). They're roommates, and one of them are really stressed, so they go down to a meadow, stargaze, and one of them confess. I was lowkey imagining 1968 john

Tumblr media
Your fingers were fidgeting uncontrollably with the hem of your shirt for a while now. You had had to physically stop yourself from smoking another cigarette that evening; hell you did not even like the stuff, but it seemed like it was the only thing that kept you sane. God, you were definitely fucked up.
The boys were inside, chatting about everything, but you needed some fresh air. It had just rained, and the very distinct aroma of the humid earth and flowers warmed your heart. You sighed and sat back in the old, rocking chair and looked up at the full moon, shining in the dark sky. A small smile made his way on your lips as the familiar tune invaded your head. Bright are the stars that shine, dark is the sky. You know this love of mine will never die…
It was just a time in your life where you were feeling tired, exhausted all the time. You had been meditating for half an hour now and you were gradually realizing it was the combination of various insignificant incidents that, when put together, could generate an insufferable amount of anxiety. These events could range from the fact that you were late for work today to your painfully inexistent love life. Well, perhaps the latter one was not that insignificant.
Truth is, being irrevocably in love with your lifelong best friend sucked, and you had learnt that love was not how it was pictured in movies the hard way. In your story, there were no stolen kisses in cozy cafés, no pillow talks at midnight and certainly no happy endings.
You rubbed your temples, feeling slightly more relaxed due to the back-and-forth movement of the chair. You had accepted the harsh reality a while ago: John was probably never going to love you the way you loved him. It still hurt though, knowing your feelings were bound to last for a long time. But you did not want to endanger the strong friendship you both had managed to develop throughout the years. And you also were pretty pleased with the fact that you got to be roommates with the love of your life, so you guessed you were okay, in a way.
You were still stargazing when the door opened and John appeared. To your surprise, he had his glasses on for once in his life and actually managed to get through the mini series of tiny steps in front of the door without falling. You let out a chuckle, remembering all the times you had witnessed him fall to the ground.
“Hey, hey, laugh all you want, but I wasn’t the one who slipped on the banana peel somebody threw at me!”
The recalling of the incident made you laugh genuinely for what felt the first time since forever.
“That’s not really fair of you to mention, as it was very early in the morning and I had had only four hours of sleep,” you scoffed playfully.
He waved your explanation away and sat on the floor next to you.
“So whatcha doing here all by yourself?”
“Uh, I had a slight headache and needed some fresh air, why?”
“Well, we really wanted some pancakes and since you do them so divinely…”
 You punched his shoulder, laughing.
“We been knew you only keep me around for food!”
“How did you know?” he joked with fake surprise, putting a dramatic hand on his heart.
You giggled and rested your head on the back of the chair once again.
“Okay, I’ll make you some. Just give me ten minutes.”
He nodded and was about to get up when he saw your face.
“Wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door…”
You glanced at him, shifting uncomfortably.
“Can’t believe you’re quoting your own song,” you tried to tease with a smile, but it did not reach your eyes.
“It’s technically Paul’s song but you get what I mean. What’s the matter, birdie?”
The silly nickname warmed your entire being, reminding you of your teenage years. He had not used it since the early years. You had often wondered why. Why the incredible proximity you shared since your childhood had seemed to slowly vanish along the years.
You could not help but let out a sigh as you crossed his dark eyes.
 “I’m in love with someone.”
He moved a few inches away, taken aback by your sudden statement. He took a few seconds to proceed the fact before glancing at you.
 “Oh. Do I know him?”
You hesitated a bit, your thumbs twiddling together. Should you tell him or should you not? You probably were in the greatest dilemma you had ever lived. Tell the truth and most certainly lose one of the only persons you really cared for or invent something that will humiliate for your whole life?
“Yeah. You actually know him pretty well.”
He removed his glasses and began cleaning them using the edge of his shirt with mechanical gestures.
“Who is he? What’s his name? Is he worth of you?”
The last question, asked with such vigor, brought a smile to your lips.
“Believe me, he may just be the worthiest.”
 “Well, who is he?”
 You took a large breath.
 “It’s you.”
He almost chocked with his own saliva and moved to face you directly. You felt your anxiety grow inside of you but fought to keep a straight, neutral face.
 “What?”
“It’s you, John. I can’t believe you’ve never understood it, after all those years…”
He blinked, and you could not help but snigger at his confused and very myopic gaze. The smile that was faltering on your lips disappeared and you got up abruptly, avoiding his eyes.
“Listen, now that it’s done, I don’t want anything to change between us, I don’t want to lose your friendship… I’m just too attached to you to lose you. Honestly, I don’t know what I’d do without you. So if we could forget what just happened, that’d be just perf-”
He grabbed your wrists, instantly stopping your nervous speech flow.
 “I don’t want to forget.”
His hands slowly let go of yours to move to your stunned face, resting his palms on your warm cheeks.
“I don’t know if that fella’s the worthiest, but he’s rather decent.”
 “Do you like him?”
 “Very much.”
Your lips parted in a wide smile as they met his. His natural odor wrapped you up, making you lose yourself completely in the kiss. The boys inside had switched to Till There Was You, and Paul’s voice resonated in the moonlit night as your fingers wandered in John’s hair, refusing to let go.
Then there was music and wonderful roses They tell me In sweet fragrant meadows Of dawn and dew
There was love all around But I never heard it singing No, I never heard it at all Till there was you
You finally broke the kiss but stayed close to him, breathless. Seeing your flustered and blushing state, John laughed quietly against your forehead before brushing his finger against your upper lip.
“I can’t believe we’ve known each other for so long and never realized what was happening here,” he mumbled, amused. “Best friends to lovers… Aren’t we a bit cliché?”
“Darling, clichés are the best thing if used with the right persons. And we’re the best.”
John chuckled at your smug expression, and you pecked his lips once more before heading to the door.
“Where are you going?” he whined, following suit.
“Gonna make those pancakes. You coming?”
He caught your hand and linked your fingers with his, smiling down at you as you walked into the lively house together. God, you sure could get used to this.

Do you want your last ex to be happy, even if it means not being with you? >> Phoenix? I mean, I don’t wish ill upon him. He didn’t give me enough of a chance to love him, so I don’t have any stronger desires for him. If you have a smartphone, what’s the last app you downloaded? What about the last app you uninstalled? >> Shazam was the last I downloaded, and Dissidia was the last I uninstalled (it was just taking up too much space). If you were a straight member of the opposite sex, who are some celebrities you think you’d have a thing for? >> I mean, my attraction isn’t gender-locked, so I imagine it’d be the same women I think are cute now. Have you ever dyed your own hair? How did it turn out? >> Yeah. It turned out all right. Right-handed or left-handed? >> Right.
What is the wallpaper on your cellphone? >> The lock screen is a fan-made Dark Tower movie poster. The home screen is an art of Rustin Cohle that I found on tumblr. (So, basically, my phone is on some real Matthew McConaughey shit. As usual.) Does your first, middle, and last spell something? >> My initials? LFD... Left For Dead? God, I hope not. (Left 4 Dead is a great franchise, though...) Favorite TV channel? >> Hm. What is your least favorite breed of dog? >> Hm. In your opinion, are leggings appropriate to wear as pants? >> Sure, who cares. Have you ever had a teacher that also taught your parents? >> No. Is there any alcohol in the fridge? >> Yeah, there’s still some of the Svedka left, and there’s Sparrow’s last spiked Arnold Palmer. The rest of the booze is here in my room with me. Do you hate it when people smoke around you? >> Not unless they’re obnoxious about it. What do you want for your birthday? >> Well, my birthday just passed, so. Who is the most inappropriate person you know? >> Hm. Who in your phone has a heart after their name? >> No one. After breaking up, what’s the worst? >> I don’t know, that depends on the breakup. Do you have a second mom? >> I don’t even have a first. When was the hardest time in your life? What made it so hard & how did you overcome it? >> Hm.
How do you relieve stress? >> Stubbornness. I don’t have many specific coping skills for it. When you die do you want to have a funeral service? Why or why not? >> That’s up to the people responsible for my body after I’ve vacated it. I’m under no illusions that I require a say in what happens. What is your opinion on capital punishment? >> I don’t really care either way. What period of history was your favorite to learn about? If you don’t like history, what is your favorite thing to learn about? >> I’m not sure I have a specific favourite. Obviously ancient Scandinavian history crosses over with other interests of mine, and Hetalia gave me a pretty strong interest in certain aspects of WWII, but mostly I just... like history. Period. Where is your favorite fast food restaurant & what do you order when you go there? >> --- What do you think about smoking in public places? >> I don’t have a blanket opinion about this sort of thing. What’s your favorite cheese? >> Brie, pepper jack, asiago. What’s your favorite type of chocolate? >> Dark chocolate with sea salt and chili peppers. How do you like your steak? >> I don’t. What’s the last time you ate something you’d picked in the wild? >> I don’t think I’ve ever gotten a chance to do that. Arrange the following in order of preference: Pineapple, Orange, Apple, Strawberry, Cherry, Watermelon, Banana. >> Cherry, strawberry, apple, watermelon, pineapple, orange, banana. What is your opinion on “God?” >> That’s far too general a question for me. The word itself isn’t anything particular for me, and as far as my personal beliefs are concerned, I vacillate from panentheistic to polytheistic to both at the same time to neither almost daily. I don’t think specific religious paradigms suit me. As strange as it might sound, I feel much more comfortable believing in all at once. run me over
welp. it’s finally here. the last real part of run me over. if an epilogue is desired i suppose i can write one, since i do end off sort of ambiguously... i hope im using the word right, english is hard when it isnt your first language
Part One: thump
Part Two: melt
Part Three: do you even meme?
Part Four: laugh
Part Five: fall
Part Six: don’t even think it...
Part Seven: twist
Part Eight: tangle
Slight NSFW: no smut, but it gets a little hot at the end...
Time. There was time for everything, theoretically speaking. Felix never thought, however, that he’d have time to figure out that he was slowly falling for a guy he could consider to be one of the best friends he ever had. They hung out normally for the past two months. Felix did whatever he could to make Sean happy. If there was something he saw that Sean liked and he could get it without it looking too weird, he did exactly that.
For example, a month ago, Sean and Felix were playing video games on both their days off. When Sean mentioned loving the music to the game and wishing he could find the soundtrack in vinyl, Felix had it delivered to his house and called Sean to come take a listen to it. When Sean fell in love with the sound, Felix couldn’t resist giving it away to the green haired boy, claiming he could just get another for himself. He didn’t.
Last week, it had started getting incredibly cold in the city, and Sean forgot to bring a coat with him when he went to hang out with the Swede. Felix loved seeing the goosebumps on his arms, but didn’t like that they were there because of the cold. So, when Sean left for the night, Felix handed him his coat, which probably wasn’t good for his own sanity. Because to see a smaller man he wished he could kiss the fuck out of in his own clothes – even if it was just a jacket – was incredibly frustrating. Sean never made a motion to return the coat, which made Felix think extra hard on the situation.
Girls didn’t return sweaters or shirts either, if they could help it. It was something Felix himself loved seeing, especially with his ex-girlfriend. And now with Sean… he was still trying to figure out if this would be a thing where he just wanted a good dose of sex or he was actually getting emotionally attached to the guy. He hoped it was just the former. Because if the latter was the case, then he was screwed.
Not to say that they acted straight together in any capacity. Definitely not. In fact, last week, the same day Felix had given away his coat, Sean basically sat in Felix’s lap, almost unironically. They were hanging out with a few other friends whom Felix decided to introduce the Irishman to, and Sean had almost never left his side. In fact, when PJ held up a piece of paper where he drew mistletoe, Sean had basically flipped over and near straddled Felix, running hands through the Swede’s hair and pretended to furiously make out with him. All Felix could do was yell out a cry of, “Jesus!” and leave one hand on Sean’s back and the other trying to grab his waist but it ended up brushing up Sean’s thigh instead.
And that was only one night. When Felix’s assistant, Brad, took a picture of Sean to mess around with his photography skills and Felix saw it, he made a joke saying, “I’d fuck that guy in the ass.” Felix had no idea Sean was secretly screaming on the inside but played it off by replying with a very cheeky, “You have already.” Of course, it was a lie. Felix hadn’t fucked Sean in the ass. But both were secretly dreaming of the complete animal lust in them to commit that very act. Both acting so mocking gay with each other, that they were convinced the other was actually straight.
PJ was, needless to say, absolutely loving the tension between the two. And of course, he added to it whenever he could. Such as… daring Sean to do an Irish dance and then sing to Felix. And when he lost a bet, having Sean be Felix’s personal slave for an hour – which was something that PJ knew Felix loved doing, ordering people around, especially people he was attracted to. He didn’t know that Sean really liked it too.
“You have to stop doing that,” Sean begged PJ over text later. “I don’t know how much more I can take of you taking advantage of how I feel about him.” Sean was having one of those day’s where not even music could take his mind off of Fe. Every thought hurt to imagine and think of. Physical pains panged in his chest and vibrated through his stomach. It was torture to go through. He didn’t regret feeling this way since he first lay eyes on Fe, but he regretted that it was – in his mind – completely one-sided.
“You have to tell him at least that you’re gay,” PJ advised.
“I can’t!” Sean argued. “It’d get so awkward and he probably wouldn’t want to hang out like we do. I can’t be without him Peej, I know I can’t do that. That’d ruin me.” Sean almost wanted to cry at the thought of not having Fe, his Fe, in his life anymore. That kind of pain would be a whole different thing altogether. It’d be numbing and destructive. Sean wouldn’t find the courage to get up in the morning. What would be the point if the one thing that made him happy didn’t want to be around him anymore?
“Look can you trust me on this?” PJ pleaded. “I know it’s probably going to be the most difficult thing you’ve done. I realize that, but you can’t… you can’t hide it either. Don’t you think he deserves to know who you are?” Sean stared at the screen. PJ did have a point. There was a certain level of honesty that had to come with being really close friends with someone. After all, he didn’t have to tell Fe that he was in love with him. All he had to do was admit his own sexuality… and face the idea of losing the best thing that had ever happened to him.
Felix and Sean had met up again, this time for a chill one on one time to watch a horror movie. Felix had initially invited PJ, but at the last minute, he canceled. Something Felix didn’t appreciate. But Sean knew why. The night initially had been going well. They hung out like friends normally would. But each of them were thinking their crude little thoughts.
God, he’s so cute when he’s excited, Felix thought when Edgar gave Sean a kiss when Sean puckered up.
If he spoke just one more time in Swedish I’d probably drown, Sean thought when he asked how to say ‘boy’ and ‘girl’ in Swedish.
The things I’d make you do with your mouth, Felix fantasized when Sean smiled and took a sip of water.
You look at me like you’re thinking so hard. What are you thinking about, Fe… Sean noticed the amount of time Felix’s eyes stayed focused on him when he was doing small tasks. Swallowing the spoon of ice cream, taking a sip of water, petting Edgar, anything and everything.
“Question,” Sean said trying to distract himself from the feeling of wanting to lean on Felix. “Remember when you said you play guitar? Can you play for me now?” Felix looked at Sean briefly before nodding.
“Yeah, I can play you something,” Felix said getting up. “Come and pick a guitar.” Felix had three guitars. Two of them electric, one acoustic. Depending on which guitar Sean picked was which song Felix would play for him. Sean was excited beyond belief. This would probably make him love Felix even more – if that was even possible at this point – and that would make it so much harder to tell him what he had in mind to tell him.
They walked into Felix’s home office, which had the three guitars hanging nicely on the wall. A red one, a blue one, and a dark finished one.
“That one’s a beauty,” Sean said pointing at the acoustic one with the dark finish. Felix smiled. It wasn’t his favorite guitar, but he loved that his Little Potatoe recognized how beautiful it was. He went to the rack and took it down. He sat on the floor in the middle of the office attempting to tune the guitar by ear. Sean sat across from him. Now to pick a song…
“Fair warning I suck at singing,” Felix laughed deciding on Oh! Darling.
“I don’t mind,” Sean said already drinking in the sight of Fe handling the instrument. Your pupils increase in size when you look at someone you like. If Sean could see his own pupils, he guessed they’d probably the size of the moon.
“Okay then,” Felix strummed the strings to get the final test as to the tuning. He was satisfied. “So here’s Wonderwall,” He joked before he started playing and sort of mumbling through lyrics. He didn’t look at Sean so often, but when he did, he saw a huge smile on his face. It gave Felix the satisfaction to play through.
Sean paid rapt attention but the back of his mind imagined a little scene. He imagined a couple of kids running around the house. A girl, a boy, and a dog – not Edgar, thought he loved the little guy. He imagined that when the kids were old enough they’d ask their parents about their song. And Sean with eyes and heart still so full of love and nostalgia would look at Felix when he answered, “The Beatles gave me the courage to come out to Papa.” Felix would smile sheepishly and chuckle as he sat with the kids.
One thing was for sure. Sean had to say it. No building up to it, he’d probably lose his nerve if he tried to do that. He had to just tell Felix straight up. So as Felix finished up the bit of the song he was doing, Sean tugged at the carpet of the room and looked shyly at the Scandinavian. Felix trailed of when he saw Sean’s eyes looking at him the way they were. He wanted to kiss him. Make him blush. Tell him how much he wanted him, which right now, was escalating exponentially. There was a moments silence before Sean broke it with a shattering statement.
“I'm gay,” he said quickly. Felix looked at Sean blankly, almost not believing what he heard. He blinked before Sean continued. “Look I know this might change our friendship, I get it, it gets awkward, especially since… anyway, I understand if you don’t want to hang out anymore but I had to tell you. You deserve to know that and friends should be honest with each other an-”
“I'm bi,” Felix interrupted before laughing. It felt good to say to Sean. After all, he had only realized this because of him to begin with. Honesty was important. Sean had widened his eyes at the information that hit him like a semi-truck. The two were so surprised that the other wasn’t straight. But both were taking it differently. While Felix was laughing so hard he almost couldn’t breathe, Sean was looking mesmerized and the blonde man across him and ecstatic at the fact that perhaps one day he could elicit at least a one-night stand from him.
“Bi?” Sean finally whimpered. Felix nodded, his laughter ebbing away.
“Yeah,” he said. “I only found out a couple months ago though.” He wasn’t going to be shy about admitting it. At this point he saw that if the situation were right, he could have Sean. Maybe is Sean was having a bad day, or they were a little tipsy, or if Sean were into dressing up and wore his clothes again…
“W-what made you realize?” Sean looked shyly at Felix now.
“Why you wanna know?” Felix raised an eyebrow and smirked. Maybe that day would come sooner than he thought.
“I just…”
“Say why.” Felix ordered. He looked at Sean incredibly lustfully, not even trying to hide it anymore. The guitar had been set aside out of the way by now. Sean gulped. He didn’t want to say. That would ruin everything. Yes, Felix may be bi, but to admit to having been in love with him since the beginning, that was a game changer even bigger than admitting he was gay was. This was the Hail Mary of all Hail Mary’s. it could make or break the game. Felix put his elblows on his knees and leaned forward.
“I gave you an order. Don’t disobey it.” Sean shivered. He very much liked Felix doing that. He had a huge urge to say ‘I’m sorry, Daddy,’ in response. Instead he whimpered again and responded weakly.
“I love you,” he said looking directly into the blond’s blue eyes. That itself was all Felix needed to hear before leaning over the rest of the way and kissing the green haired boy. Sean immediately kissed back and was both hyperaware and melted against Felix as much as he could. This… this had been everything Sean had wanted his whole life. For one amazing man to love and at least like him back enough to do this. A man who drove him insane with all the chemicals running around his brain just by thinking about them.
Sean moved automatically, wanting to get as close to Fe as possible. He straddle the Swede, bringing himself as close he could  to him. Felix grabbed Sean’s hips and gripped them tightly. Sean’s fingers tangled themselves in Felix’s hair. The tugging was enough to make Felix want to pounce on him already. When he couldn’t wait any longer, he pulled away from Sean and pushed him down onto his back on the floor. His lips slightly w=swollen from the kissing.
“You really have been trying my patience the past two months, baby boy,” Felix growled leaning over Sean who’s eyes looked wild with desire. Felix nipped at the Irishman’s neck. Sean couldn’t hold back gasps and the attempt to grind his hips upward.
“You have no idea how hard it’s been,” Felix said between bites and kisses. “Thinking I wasn’t ever going to be able to have my way with you, especially when you were wearing my jacket the other day. I wanted to take you in the hall right then and there.” Sean had started whimpering again. Felix’s words and touches basically ruining him.
“Have you anything to say for yourself, baby boy?” Felix said this roughly, almost a menacing growl. Sean did nothing but shiver uncontrollably.
“I'm sorry, Daddy,” He answered breathily. Felix smirked when Sen called him daddy. The way things were going, Felix definitely wouldn’t want this to be a one time thing. He was definitely going to want something permanent. And although he may not love Sean yet, he definitely knew that he could. Felix kissed Sean on the lips again. This was going to be good…

Tumblr media
Photo: Jimmy Fontaine
Hailing from Los Angeles, gnash was always involved with music in one way or another. He started exploring music on the internet from the comfort of his own home, and now, the rapper just concluded his headlining tour to sold out audiences across the country. gnash received worldwide success after his hit single “i hate u, i love u” featuring Olivia O’Brien in 2016. But gnash’s real talent was showcased in his three EPs u, me and us which were released in the span of two years from 2015 to 2016.

Fueled by his personal mission to help others feel better, gnash released his debut full-length album we, on Jan. 11. Track by track, the singer captivatingly reminds listeners that no matter what they go through, they are never alone. His shows are high energy, but gnash still conscientiously makes concerts feel intimate for fans. He frequently requests for the lights to be turned on so he can connect with as many people as possible. Many fans relate to the lyrics and some are even moved to tears. In everything gnash does, it is clear he just wants to encourage people to smile.
This Valentine’s Day, gnash released the fan favorite track, “imagine if” featuring ruth b., as his latest single from we.

We chatted with gnash before he performed for a sold-out crowd at the last stop of the North American leg of his The Broken Hearts tour.
OTW: Growing up in LA, were you around the music scene? What made you want to pursue music as a career?
gnash: My dad got me a digital turntable when I was like 13 or 14 so I’ve been DJ’ing since then. I would just kind of do parties or friends’ houses and stuff like that. But I always loved music and I was always super into studying what was popular online, and then I think that’s when I realized I wanted to be in the music business. Well, I knew I wanted to be in entertainment because my mom and my godmother were in entertainment but I didn’t know what faction. I found out USC, which I really always wanted to go to, had a music business program so I set my sights on that. I transferred to USC and then towards the end of my time there, I started recording my voice on things and expressing myself in that way because I had been in a relationship for a couple years and I was going through my first real breakup. I was super inspired by that, just to get a few things off my chest, so I started making songs about it and that’s how I kind of got started.
OTW: Your first three EPs are titled u, me and us. Now you have your debut full-length album we; what’s the meaning behind these titles?
gnash: When I set out to make we I knew that I wanted it to be an album for everybody. So where u was something for one person, and me was something I kind of made for myself, and then us was something I made as a plea for something to become a thing. I wanted to fill we with songs that I thought everybody could connect with. So the core consensus and the mission statement I landed on is “if we feel together, then we’ll feel together,” and what I mean by that is let’s say for example tonight at the El Rey, a bunch of people come in and they’re gonna sing songs that I wrote, but I never knew that a thousand people would like them and would want to sing along with them. Maybe they come to the show alone or with one friend, and they see 800 or 900 other people who are singing as well and these are ideas and statements that people attach themselves to because they connect with them and so does everybody else here, and then automatically you are less alone which inevitably makes you feel better.
OTW: Congratulations on we! What was the process like creating it?
gnash: So for the album I started working with Jeff Levin at Atlantic Records. and I have a partnership with them with my label happysad. Jeff came on and he wanted me to tell stories in rooms with one other co-writer and an acoustic guitar. He wanted me to write a whole album of acoustic songs and then we’d worry about production. Basically what that did was prove The Beatles rule which is if a song is great over four chords and an acoustic guitar, then it’s a classic song. And so I knew the album was gonna take me a long time to make but I also knew that if every song was starting like that, it was gonna have that kind of longevity that I thought it needed to be relevant to people, some songs two years later. But what that process allowed me to do was wipe the slate clean for expectations for me or what at least I thought people were expecting from me, and then what I ended up coming back around to was more authentically me then I’d ever been before. I’m very thankful to Jeff for bringing me to that place.
OTW: What’s one message you hope listeners receive when people listen to we?
gnash: I think on the surface it’s if we feel together, then we feel better. And so when they listen to the 35 minutes top to bottom, I did my best to create them a sonic journey. Even if you’re having kind of a weird day, hopefully by the end maybe you’re feeling uplifted and you wanna throw a peace sign in the air and kind of say you feel better, that’s really the goal for me I just wanna help people feel better, and so I hope that’s what people walk away from we feeling, cause I’m not out here saying I’m the best singer or I’m the best musician or I’m the best performer or anything else like that, I just know that there’s a lot of people that would like to feel better and if I can be a small or large part in that for them, then that’s awesome.
OTW: You describe your music as “happysad;” what exactly is happysad?
gnash: To me happysad is kind of the range of emotions I exist in. I have really intense serotonin bumps and bruises, so sometimes those bumps go way up, sometimes they go way down. I like to think that I exist on this sliding scale between happy and sad all the time. Like if you had a graph and there was a line, I’m always kind of rollercoastering above and below that line. If I’m feeling below the line, what do I do? I write a happy song, but it’s gonna be about a sad subject. And if I’m above the happy line and I want to stay there, what am I gonna do? Probably write a song about feeling great, and then maybe three days later I’ll feel sad and then I’ll finish it that day so it’ll kind of add that kind of flavor to it. I always want to make sure everything I do has balance because if you don’t have happy then you don’t really know what it means to be sad and vice versa, if you’re never sad then you don’t know how great it feels to feel happy. I just try to have as many great days in a row as possible and if I have a bad day then I try and make sure I don’t have another one the next day, cause that’s how you form a bad habit.
OTW: Online you ask fans what song off we makes them feel better; is there a song by another artist that makes you feel better when you listen to it?
gnash: “Imagine” by John Lennon always makes me feel fantastic. “All You Need Is Love” by the Beatles, I’m a big Beatles fan and their songs always make me feel great. Most of Bob Marley, doesn’t really matter the subject matter, I just really think there was an energy that he put into every song he made that was just uplifting in a way that I just don’t know many people are capable of. “Don’t Worry Be Happy” is for when I’m really feeling down, I’ll put that on and it’ll always make me smile because it’s just silly and so beautiful.

OTW: For your meet and greets you do arts and crafts with your fans; what inspired that?
gnash: I’ve always done my best to talk as long as fans want to talk and hang out but there’s still time constraints on that. We wanted to do something special and we were like, “Why don’t we just do something fun and make arts and crafts with everyone?” So we have 10 people a night come in and hang out. We burn an incense, we all drink half a liter of water and we have a different activity every day. Some days we’ve done Valentine’s Day cards to yourself, we’ve done self-love garlands, we’ve made slime, stuff like that. I ask them what they’re grateful for and how many pets they have, everybody introduces themselves, and then I encourage them to make either some kind of group text so they can all stay in touch because I want everybody to feel like they’re walking away feeling better, but there’s more than just saying you feel better. Maybe you create a support system with a group of friends, so why not meet them at arts and crafts or meet them at The Broken Hearts Club meeting? There’s been a lot of people who have become friends from it, and I see it online, and I’m excited for the next tour because I think people will come back together and even if they don’t come back to my show, maybe they’re lifelong friends and that means the world to me.
OTW: What is The Broken Hearts Club meeting?
Gnash: During The Broken Hearts Club meeting, we come out and take a group picture, I speak briefly, I do my best to hug everybody, there’s a couple selfies taken, but it’s mostly just about the human connection. And secretly we give out passes throughout the night. If somebody just comes in a homemade tshirt or if somebody is particularly emotionally moved by the show, someone in my camp keeps an eye out. Everybody secretly has a sleeve of wristbands underneath their hoodies and makes sure that everybody that we notice or feel like needs to be there, is there. It’s been fantastic, and to be honest it’s been what has gotten me through the tour because normally by this point in the tour I’m exhausted and ready for bed, but on this run every single day I wake up excited to make arts and crafts and then play a show and then hug 150 people or however many people are gonna be there because it’s hard to do that and walk away not feeling incredible on my end to. I’m extremely thankful for it.
Tumblr media
OTW: What are your plans after this tour?
gnash: Well I’m gonna go home, which is about 10 blocks from here and then I’m gonna get started on my next little body of music, and I’m always working on new stuff so I don’t know where it’ll live eventually but the next month until we leave for Europe, is gonna be just music music music. And bringing friends over and writing with people and writing little songs when I’m alone or when I’m with friends and just really just getting back to my roots on that front like what I did with the first three EPs. And then every now and then one of those songs will probably feel more album-y, and I’ll probably hold onto it for a little bit longer, head over to Europe and play some shows and then for the rest of the year I just wanna keep hugging people and helping people smile and seeing people smile, you know you can’t make them smile but you can try to help. That’s my goal, is to see energies rise.
OTW: Who would be your Ones To Watch?
gnash: Guardin who is on first tonight, fantastic. As well as Mallrat who plays second she’s amazing as well. And also this guy Field Medic he’s a fantastic singer, and I’m a huge fan of his. Pretty much all of my friends, cause I’m always watching them and I’m excited for what they do next. When I get home, I’m excited to start exploring Spotify or Apple Music and just explore the web and see what shows its face. I’m always trying to find songs that have under a thousand plays on them and just like fall in love with stuff that way cause at the end of the day I’m still kind of like a pretentious music listener and still want to know that cool new thing that nobody’s heard of yet because I love that feeling.

every grammy for record of the year settled
another installment of what is slowly becoming a series of me pointing at things i’m mostly okay with and making simple jokes instead of writing actual things. i have six rough drafts of fictional shorts i said i wanted to post by the end of january and now its february 11th and fuck, dude, but this is so much easier!
1959 "Catch a Falling Star," by Perry Como "The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late)," by David Seville "Fever," by Peggy Lee "Witchcraft," by Frank Sinatra WINNER: "Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu (Volare)," by Domenico Modugno
This field actually sets the tone for all the future Grammy categories to come. There's 2 songs that are really fucking good, there's one person who's here because they have a reputation as a person who is popular, there's some fucking awful bullshit that we're only going to remember in five years because it's, y'know, fucking awful bullshit, and then the winner is some obscure nonsense that sort of renders the whole operation moot, like if in 2007 the Oscar for Best Picture went to Chumscrubber, or if the Falcons won the Super Bowl. Peggy Lee/Frank Sinatra : Beyonce/Rihanna+Drake :: Perry Como : Adele, David Seville : Lukas Graham :: Domenico Modugno : twenty one pilots.
Yeah the winner is "Fever." I'm not looking to re-invent the wheel here, the best song of these five is "Fever," like are you kidding me, "Fever." "Fever," guys. "Catch a Falling Star" is a relic of an era where all we wanted from male pop stars was for them to be a gentle father in a sweater to say he's proud of us, "Witchcraft" goes but its only failure is that it's not "Fever," hahaha they actually thought "The Chipmunk Song" would stand the test of time, and "Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu (Volare)?" Fuck outta here, "Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu (Volare)." I have nothing to say to you. What are you? I don't care. You're not "Fever." Also I immediately regret this exercise because now I'm just angry I'm alive in era where songs don't have horn sections. Someone give me a big band cover of "Closer." Yeah I know Postmodern Jukebox did "Closer" BUT THEY DIDN'T DO IT THE WAY I WANTED. DO IT AGAIN.
TRUE ENDING: "Fever"
1960 "A Fool Such as I," by Elvis Presley "High Hopes," by Frank Sinatra "Like Young," by Andre Previn "The Three Bells," by The Browns WINNER: "Mack the Knife," by Bobby Darin
Im going to give Andre Previn a shitton of extra credit here for apparently naming his album Secret Songs for Young Lovers, which is a simply killer album title. Like I think only Mitski's Bury Me at Makeout Creek can stand up to that title. I'm also giving it extra credit for being an instrumental, that's just refreshing. It still only adds up to a strong second, I'm not here to be contrarian (yet), they got it right, but yo, Andre Previn! You seem chill.
TRUE ENDING: "Mack the Knife"
1961 "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" by Elvis Presley "Georgia on My Mind," by Ray Charles "Mack the Knife," by Ella Fitzgerald "Nice 'n Easy," by Frank Sinatra WINNER: "Theme from A Summer Place," by Percy Faith
Hey! Black people! I legitimately was worried we wouldn't see them for another few years, but hey, they got an early invite (relative to American history)! I like that "Mack the Knife" was nominated again. It makes me wish that, last year, both Tay Tay's "Blank Space" and the indie dudebro's "Blank Space" cover had been nominated simultaneously. When you type "Georgia on My Mind" into the YouTube search bar, suggested searches include "Ludacris," "Willie Nelson," and "Michael Buble," and that is one person away from being a party I'd like to attend. I really want to give this to "Mack the Knife" again because I think that'd be funny, and I, an ignoramus, shouted "YO THIS IS THAT SONG?" the second I heard "Theme from A Summer Place," I've heard that used as a music cue in a billion comedies, that song is iconic, but the winner is "Georgia on My Mind." That song won an Oscar for Jamie Foxx.
TRUE ENDING: "Georgia on My Mind"
1962 "Big Bad John," by Jimmy Dean "The Second Time Around," by Frank Sinatra "Take Five," by The Dave Brubeck Quartet "(Up a) Lazy River," by Si Zentner WINNER: "Moon River," by Henry Mancini
"Big Bad John" just makes me angry that country music used to feel legit and dangerous, and nowadays Brantley Gilbert thinks he's an outlaw because he has a tattoo honoring the 2nd Amendment (a law). I promised myself I wouldn't turn any one part of this into an extended treatise on bro country, but it's not extended if I keep it to two sentences, however compounded they may be! Anyhoo. These are five decidedly not-unpleasant songs by five white dudes. I understand I'm making an assumption about Si Zentner here, but it's 1962. People were still wearing hats in this season of Mad Men, I think it's a safe assumption. I think. I dunno. I think? Yeah, fuck it, "Take Five," that had a pretty boss drum section. Imagine listening to every song made in 1961 and thinking, "Yes. These. I love these five songs." "Stand By Me" was the biggest hit of the year. "Runaway" was number two, I'm pretty sure that was a banger, and if not at least it couldn't be worse than these five. "Hit the Road Jack." "Crying." "Shop Around." "Crazy." Hey guys I just made a hot discovery, I think solely using the Grammy nominees for Record of the Year does not an accurate snapshot of music history provide.
TRUE ENDING: It doesn't matter because it can't be "Stand By Me," but "Take Five" I guess
1963 "Desafinado," by Stan Getz & Charlie Byrd "Fly Me to the Moon Bossa Nova," by Joe Harnell and His Orchestra "I Can't Stop Loving You," by Ray Charles "What Kind of Fool Am I?" by Sammy Davis Jr. WINNER: "I Left My Heart in San Francisco," by Tony Bennett
You can pick up some interesting tidbits from music history, though, such as the fact conductors would have "and their orchestra" in their name. I'd be so much more okay with the state of things, as they are, if The Chainsmokers would start going by The Chainsmokers and Their Soundboard. I don't mean to impugn The Chainsmokers' ability as songwriters, I'd listen to "Closer" a million times before I gave any of these songs another spin, I would just prefer more accuracy in my song attribution. Also the extra credit "Like Young" got for being an instrumental is waning. I could have listened to "Run Up" five times. That's what I could have done with these twenty minutes. ...At least they didn't nominate "The Monster Mash." It wouldn't have been without precedent! They could have nominated "The Monster Mash." No matter how bad it is, it can always get worse.
TRUE ENDING: "I Can't Stop Loving You"
1964 "Dominique," by The Singing Nun "Happy Days Are Here Again," by Barbra Streisand "I Wanna Be Around," by Tony Bennett "Wives and Lovers," by Jack Jones WINNER: "Days of Wine and Roses," by Henry Mancini
when do the 1960s get to the seasons of mad men with stan in them. oh okay hi there "wives and lovers" aren't you horrible. what a blast from the past you are. why am i doing this. fuck it.
TRUE ENDING: "Dominique"
1965 "Downtown," by Petula Clark "Hello, Dolly!" by Louis Armstrong "I Want to Hold Your Hand," by The Beatles "People," by Barbra Streisand WINNER: "The Girl from Ipanema," by Astrud Gilberto & Stan Getz
HERE. WE. FUCKING. GO. Holy shit. Up-tempo music! Songs I wouldn't only ever listen to in hotel lobbies, that aren't all the exact same ballad! What good fortune! We can actually have a fun debate over which of these songs was actually the best! Sort of. I mean. Just in terms of cultural impact, it's "I Want to Hold Your Hand." I wouldn't dare argue that "I Want to Hold Your Hand" isn't a historically significant song. But "Downtown" is just a nice song about going to the city and seeing a moviefilm, "Hello, Dolly!" is just a wonderful little ditty which brings to mind Freakazoid, "People," erm, and "The Girl from Ipanema" is about as surreal as it gets when you're talking about Record of the Year nominees. And we're not talking about cultural impact, y'know? (At least for now, this is gonna go all over the place.) We're talking about my shitty opinion which, here, overlaps with that of the Grammys in this instance. "The Girl from Ipanema" is dope.
TRUE ENDING: "The Girl from Ipanema"
1966 "Yesterday," by The Beatles "The 'In' Crowd," by The Ramsey Lewis Trio "King of the Road," by Roger Miller "The Shadow of Your Smile," by Tony Bennett WINNER: "A Taste of Honey," by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass
It sounds like taking the easy way out to pick what is widely recognized as the best song ever made by what is widely recognized as the best rock band of all time, but. Um. It's really hard to argue for the other four songs here. You could, in a vacuum, almost make an argument for "The 'In' Crowd?" But I'm at the point in this project where I am completely okay with the idea of never hearing a jazz instrumental ever again. Also I regret being mean to Barbra Streisand the last two years, you're right, those jokes were unair, she's a national treasure and I miss the days when true theatre kids could score Record of the Year noms. The only representation theatre kids get in pop music these days is Tay Tay, and that's disappointing. Anyhoo, yeah, fucking "Yesterday." Whatever.
TRUE ENDING: "Yesterday"
1967 "Almost Persuaded," by David Houston "Monday, Monday," by The Mamas & the Papas "What Now My Love," by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass "Winchester Cathedral," by The New Vaudeville Band WINNER: "Strangers in the Night," by Frank Sinatra
One positive from this experience is that all the Mario Maker videos that YouTube had been recommending to me for months are being replaced with songs from the '60s YouTube thinks I might enjoy. Lemme talk about my YouTube recommendations window for a hot second because it’s gone through some shit to get me to watch Mario Maker content. There was a chain. Like, carlsagan42, I could understand, I'd watched AGDQ VODs that featured him, YouTube knew I liked speedrunning and Let's Plays of Mario Maker, here's this guy. And GrandPooBear, that was fair, he was in AGDQ, he seemed like a chill dude, it made sense I would enjoy him, too. But now it's recommending just random dudes to me. "Here's a white dude with a beard playing carlsagan's troll level!" Alright, I guess I fuck with him, he seems chill. "Hey! We found this white dude with a beard playing that white dude with a beard's troll level!" Wh - okay, this is, why is his display name Japanese, I don't, why are y "Here's a dude who just plays troll levels!" GREAT, WHY. WHY DID HE MAKE A CAREER OF DOING THAT. These songs are uninspiring, is what I'm saying. In 1966, notable releases (according to Wikipedia so who actually knows but I'ma go with it) include "The Sound of Silence," "Uptight (Everything's Alright)," "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'," "When a Man Loves a Woman," "Paint it Black," "You Can't Hurry Love," "It's a Man's Man's Man's World," "I Got You (I Feel Good)," "Good Vibrations," "I'm a Believer," and "You Keep Me Hanging On." "Ain't Too Proud to Beg." "God Only Knows!" I listened to "Winchester Cathedral." None of these songs deserve any recognition.
TRUE ENDING: i mean "Monday, Monday" but legit who could find it in them to care
1968 "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," by Glen Campbell "My Cup Runneth Over," by Ed Ames "Ode to Billie Joe," by Bobbie Gentry "Somethin' Stupid," by Nancy Sinatra & Frank Sinatra WINNER: "Up, Up and Away," by The 5th Dimension
R E S P-E C T No but like legit there was one year where it sounded like the Grammys were finally over the '50s. Ah, but no! No. ...The world had "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" in 1967. Fucking, a version of "Try a Little Tenderness" dropped in 1967. AND THEY HAD "MY CUP RUNNETH OVER." I AM APPALLED. I AM AGHAST. THIS I -- man, fuck this awards show in particular. I'm giving this to "Ode to Billie Joe" because it's the only song of this bunch I feel I'm being unfair to by bringing up better songs. That song holds its own. It's dark, it's grim, it fucks you up in all the right ways. It's the rare song that feels dated because it's so far ahead of its genre's current game. And I guess I'm down with "Up, Up and Away," too, sure, yeah, whatever, I'm down for a nice song about balloon rides. Everything else, tho. Especially "Somethin' Stupid." Wow. That sure is a thing that happened. That sure is a thing multiple people thought was a great idea! My stars.
TRUE ENDING: "Ode to Billie Joe"
1969 "Harper Valley PTA," by Jeannie C. Riley "Hey Jude," by The Beatles "Honey," by Bobby Goldsboro "Wichita Lineman," by Glen Campbell WINNER: "Mrs. Robinson," by Simon & Garfunkel
In back-to-back years, country songs performed by women were nominated for Record of the Year and subsequently adopted into feature-length films. Country music used to own, is the primary takeaway from this exercise so far. Anyhoo. I'm not gonna judge these nominees by what they could have been, because it's not necessarily these songs' fault they're not the songs that actually define this era of American history. They're nice, safe songs, and it's totally understandable why a committee wouldn't disagree with making these the five songs they wanted to present to an increasingly discomfited public for their good-time parade of nice-seeming celebrity. I don't know why I expected an awards show to lead any kind of movement in the late 1960s, it's not their job now and it certainly wasn't then, but I thought I'd at least be getting jams from the past. I got the worst Beatles song and "My Cup Runneth Over."
TRUE ENDING: "Harper Valley PTA"
1970 "A Boy Named Sue," by Johnny Cash "Is That All There Is?" by Peggy Lee "A Time for Us," by Henry Mancini "Spinning Wheel," by Blood, Sweat & Tears WINNER: "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In," by The 5th Dimension
Well, this is the least disappointing batch of nominees in years! These songs are more than unobjectionable. "A Boy Named Sue" and "Is That All There Is?" and "Aquarius" are all unimpeachable. Picking one of those three is rough, but honestly I'm just stoked to have a hard choice to make. ...I almost want to go with "A Boy Named Sue" just so I don't have to agree with the Grammys after slagging on them so much, but like "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In." Like, I have a vision of what the 1970s sounded like, and I just typed I had a vision of what something sounded like and I need to like take a walk or drink a water or something. Take a moment, take a breath, come back stronger.
TRUE ENDING: "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In"
1971
"(They Long to Be) Close to You," by The Carpenters "Everything is Beautiful," by Ray Stevens "Fire and Rain," by James Taylor "Let It Be," by The Beatles WINNER: "Bridge Over Troubled Water," by Simon & Garfunkel
...OK I'm not into any of these so let's just list other notable songs that were likely released in 1970. "ABC." "Big Yellow Taxi." "Black Magic Woman." "Express Yourself." "Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine." "I WANT YOU BACK." They nominated a song which explicitly states that everything is beautiful and ignored the song which provides IRREFUTABLE FUCKING PROOF the world is beautiful. We're not done. "Lola." "The Letter." "Paranoid." "SIGNED, SEALED, DELIVERED I'M YOURS." NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT. ONLY THE GREATEST FUCKING SONG OF ALL TIME. THAT HAS NO PLACE IN THE GRAMMYS! WHY SHOULD IT? THERE'S TOO MANY BALLADS IN THE WORLD FOR US TO PAY "SIGNED, SEALED, DELIVERED I'M YOURS" ANY MIND. Shit. I dunno. How could I possibly know.
TRUE ENDING: "(They Long to Be) Close to You"
1972 "Joy to the World," by Three Dog Night "My Sweet Lord," by George Harrison "Theme from Shaft," by Isaac Hayes "You've Got a Friend," by James Taylor WINNER: "It's Too Late," by Carole King
OH HELL YES. I can get behind this field, which is to say: I am getting behind the theme from Shaft. "Joy to the World" is lovably loony, I'm not about to speak ill of Carole King, "My Sweet Lord" is about as good a song like that as you're ever gonna find, but Shaft. Shaft, y'all.
TRUE ENDING: "Theme from Shaft"
1973 "Alone Again (Naturally)," by Gilbert O'Sullivan "American Pie," by Don McLean "Song Sung Blue," by Neil Diamond "Without You," by Harry Nilsson WINNER: "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," by Roberta Flack
"Superstition." I honestly don't get what Kanye hopes to accomplish by boycotting the Grammys when the Grammys couldn't give "Signed, Sealed Delivered I'm Yours" or "Superstition" their due. What even was that Gilbert O'Sullivan nonsense. Criminy. This is, this is just who they are, y'know? Neil Diamond sings the blues. That most iconic blues performer, Neil Diamond. They get no points for giving the trophy to Roberta Flack. Roberta Flack is something we can all agree on, you don't get a PhD in astronomy for pointing at the sun and saying "that's a bright ol' star!" and you don't get credence as a song-recognizing function for recognizing Roberta Flack made a good song.
TRUE ENDING: "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face"
1974 "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown," by Jim Croce "Behind Closed Doors," by Charlie Rich "You Are the Sunshine of My Life," by Stevie Wonder "You're So Vain," by Carly Simon WINNER: "Killing Me Softly with His Song," by Roberta Flack
I. I don't WANT to agree with this terrible program twice in a row. I'm glad to see Stevie eventually got a make-up nom, but I don't really feel that song too deeply (at least, judged against the rest of his catalogue; this would be the best song Gilbert O'Sullivan ever made by a country-ass mile), and no that doesn't make any sense but I've listened to 16 years' worth of songs the Grammys think are good, I'm not in a good place right now. I could easily say "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown" takes it, it's a great song, it wouldn't be that b -- but "Killing Me Softly with His Song," though! Am I sort of giving it the nod because of The Fugees' version? Yes, but, see, The Fugees' version doesn't get nominated, so.
TRUE ENDING: "Killing Me Softly with His Song"
1975 "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me," by Elton John "Feel Like Makin' Love," by Roberta Flack "Help Me," by Joni Mitchell "Midnight at the Oasis," by Maria Muldaur WINNER: "I Honestly Love You," by Olivia Newton-John
...I mean. I sort of decided to make Roberta Flack a hero today after spending a lifetime not thinking of her that often? But I spent the entire 1960s listening to jazz compositions and friendly dads giving me life advice. "Feel Like Makin' Love" is, when considering the scale of this project, like breathing in skunkless country air after a lifetime in the city. Which isn't to say "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" isn't the class of the pop sub-genre Songs Clay Aiken Can Capably Perform, or that "Help Me" isn't a jam. Just, Roberta Flack made three nice songs, and that makes this project worth pursuing somehow, no matter how many times I have to listen to blondes whisper about how much they love someone.
TRUE ENDING: "Feel Like Makin' Love"
1976 "At Seventeen," by Janis Ian "Lyin' Eyes," by Eagles "Mandy," by Barry Manilow "Rhinestone Cowboy," by Glen Campbell WINNER: "Love Will Keep Us Together," by Captain & Tennille
the best song i heard in this batch was the five seconds of rock guitar in the miller lite ad that presaged "rhinestone cowboy." i mean, on its own, "rhinestone cowboy" would have been the true ending, but that five seconds of guitar the youtube advertising algorithm attached to the beginning pushed it over the top.
TRUE ENDING: "Rhinestone Cowboy"
1977 "Afternoon Delight," by Starland Vocal Band "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover," by Paul Simon "I Write the Songs," by Barry Manilow "If You Leave Me Now," by Chicago WINNER: "This Masquerade," by George Benson
...So, it's been a while, right, since we complained that what was presented to us isn't what it could've been? But since a clear novelty song about bangin' when the sun's out was given a nod, let's see what else 1976 had to offer. Hm, well, the two biggest hits of the year were "Dancing Queen" and "Bohemian Rhapsody." Those aren't too egregious, assuming your standard for egregious is "Signed, Sealed Delivered I'm Yours." Which is to say, if you're dead inside, those aren't notable omissions. "Baby, I Love Your Way" is as basic as anything in this field, but I think people remember that as an Actually Good song, so I'ma bring that up. "I Wish!" "The Rubberband Man" is the best song about a fat man playing his body as an instrument you're ever like to hear. "Squeeze Box" was the centerpoint of one of the better Freaks & Geeks scenes. I'm listening to "I Write the Songs." Everyone who thinks the past is better is wrong. "I Write the Songs” is a less self-aware version of "7 Years." "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover" is acceptable, I guess. It was compelling, and it grabbed my attention. I think "This Masquerade" had its moments, but "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover" had me. I dunno. I think it's just bad that I, a music history simpleton, could come up with a viable ROTY field with like half a minute of looking at Wikipedia. Hell, I'm gonna go ahead and be super unfair and judge the Grammys for not seeing into the future and seeing all the dope tweets about "The Boys Are Back in Town."
TRUE ENDING: "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover"
1978 "Blue Bayou," by Linda Rondstadt "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue," by Crystal Gayle "Evergreen (Love Theme from A Star Is Born)," by Barbra Streisand "You Light Up My Life," by Debby Boone WINNER: "Hotel California," by Eagles
I'm going to give this year props for featuring four songs performed by women in the ROTY field. Remember my alt-nominee field from last year? The only women in that field were in ABBA. So at least the Grammys got this right, ignore the racial composition of this field DON'T THINK TOO HARD ABOUT IT, and then it would be until 1999 that the Grammys would have another year with a 4:1 female:male ratio in this category. Anyway, "Blue Bayou." If that surprises you, you haven't been paying attention.
TRUE ENDING: "Blue Bayou"
1979 "Baker Street," by Gerry Rafferty "Feels So Good," by Chuck Mangione "Stayin' Alive," by Bee Gees "You Needed Me," by Anne Murray WINNER: "Just the Way You Are," by Billy Joel
...i thought we were done with jazz instrumentals. another fool am i. Anyway fuck everything in this world that isn't the sax solo in "Baker Street" for not being the sax solo in "Baker Street." See that song is basically a jazz instrumental, but,,, the sax solo in "Baker Street" is maybe the greatest thing that's ever been? Also let's just note how the first disco song nominated for Record of the Year is by three white dudes. Dope. History is cool. But at least we have the sax solo from "Baker Street" to keep us warm.
TRUE ENDING: "Baker Street"
1980 "After the Love Has Gone," by Earth, Wind and Fire "I Will Survive," by Gloria Gaynor "The Gambler," by Kenny Rogers "You Don't Bring Me Flowers," by Barbra Streisand & Neil Diamond WINNER: "What a Fool Believes," by The Doobie Brothers
listen, i took some time off to do other things, and then i woke up at two am this morning and said, "let's continue this fool's errand!" and i made it through a few years and now it's two hours later and i am interesting in selecting the INCREDIBLY OBVIOUS CHOICE and moving on
TRUE ENDING: "I Will Survive"
1981 "The Rose," by Bette Midler "Lady," by Kenny Rogers "Theme from New York, New York," by Frank Sinatra "Woman in Love," by Barbra Streisand WINNER: "Sailing," by Christopher Cross
woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow. um. i mean, 1980 isn't a particularly inspiring year? but got.DAMN this field is so bad "escape (the pina colada song)" has a viable claim to snub status. how did this awards show survive? how did we never do better than this? are we just committed to not being into the american music awards?
TRUE ENDING: "Woman in Love"
1982 "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)," by Christopher Cross "(Just Like) Starting Over," by John Lennon "Endless Love," by Diana Ross & Lionel Richie "Just the Two of Us," by Grover Washington, Jr. with Bill Withers "Bette Davis Eyes," by Kim Carnes
I've listened to two Christopher Cross songs and "Endless Love" before having any coffee, which was a mistake. We're at this weird point in history where my unearned nostalgia doesn't exist because I'm pretty sure the '80s were mostly terrible, and the Grammys aren't 1981 bad because I get a chance to shout out Bill Withers (which I'm sure he totally appreciates, this sort of seems like something that wouldn't insult his very being, is some asshat pointing out how great he is in a whole entire piece where nothing of substance is ever said), but they're still really fuckin' bad. Also ignore what I said about the '80s being terrible because fuckin' "9 to 5" was dropped this year, as was "Don't Stop Believin'!" They selected John Lennon's best Queen impression. Dead Kennedys released a song called "Nazi Punks Fuck Off!" in 1981. That classic is, somehow, timeless.
TRUE ENDING: "Just the Two of Us"
1983 "Steppin' Out," by Joe Jackson "Ebony and Ivory," by Paul McCartney & Stevie Wonder "Always on My Mind," by Willie Nelson "Chariots of Fire," by Vangelis WINNER: "Rosanna," by Toto
As alluded to above, I am a card-carrying member of something I guess I have to call Poo Nation. (There is no card, regrettably.) I'd have to check the rules, but I am pretty sure I'm not allowed to besmirch the good name of Toto, even if the song in question is not "Africa." I think "Steppin' Out" might've been a good true ending in an alternate universe, and it's hard to deny "Chariots of Fire" is legendary (if anything has to be the last instrumental I hear while doing this, I'm glad it was that), but I'm not tryna incur anyone's wrath here. Also, hey, here's Stevie Wonder and Willie Nelson, getting makeup nods for lesser tracks. "Ebony and Ivory," that's just a more prestigious version of "Accidental Racist." No one should feel good about that song. But the first six seconds of Rosanna, that's a sort of "pinnacle of human achievement" thing, that's something we should put in a museum.
TRUE ENDING: "Rosanna"
1984 "Flashdance... What a Feeling," by Irene Cara "Every Breath You Take," by The Police "All Night Long (All Night)," by Lionel Richie "Maniac," by Michael Sembello WINNER: "Beat It!" by Michael Jackson
Wh... What is this? What just happened? A whole five songs I've listened to outside the context of this project? Songs which all still endure to this day? A winner that could actually stake a claim as the most iconic song of 1983? The Grammys! It's like you just took off your glasses and did your hair all fancy and showed up to prom, and I'm just like, oh shit, the theatre dork was actually hot all along! Did we find it? Did we find the turning point? Did Flashdance provide the turning point? Is that the movie musical you guys watched and thought, "Oh shit, this music actually kind of goes, I think we oughta get with the times?" /looks at the next year/ IT IS! Bless you, Flashdance. Bless this change you provoked in the Grammys. I'm not about to do something silly like not pick "Beat It!" but I will at least acknowledge that you are phenomenal and were the true spark that ignited the Grammys and also no one involved in your production ever fucked any kids, probably.
TRUE ENDING: "Beat It!"
1985 "Hard Habit to Break," by Chicago "Girls Just Want to Have Fun," by Cyndi Lauper "The Heart of Rock 'n Roll," by Huey Lewis and the News "Dancing in the Dark," by Bruce Springsteen WINNER: "What's Love Got to Do with It," by Tina Turner
hm. it's such a tight field we have here. not a one clear standout in this bunch. i don't know. this is a tough choice. i'm sure glad i wasn't a voting member in 1985. imagine seeing the choice laid before you and slowly having the impossibility of the task ahead dawn on you. what a daunting prospect. (tell ya what tho, "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" is a strong-as-hell second place, and "Dancing in the Dark" is possibly the strongest bronze.)
TRUE ENDING: "What's Love Got to Do with It," by Tina Turner
1986 "Money for Nothing," by Dire Straits "The Boys of Summer," by Don Henley "The Power of Love," by Huey Lewis & the News "Born in the U.S.A.," by Bruce Springsteen WINNER: "We Are the World," by USA for Africa
oh praise ra i actually get to break from the grammys So I think "The Power of Love" is solid, I think it'd be hard to find someone who'd say they have any sort of disagreement with this sound. "Born in the U.S.A." is similarly a classic. I love how The Other Side keeps trying to repurpose it as a rousing anthem for them when it is an absolutely scathing indictment of what has become of the American working class. It's such a self-own, playing this song at Republican conventions, and I love it every time it happens. You think they'd have learned how to process subtlety by now! But: I am not attached to "Born in the U.S.A." too deeply beyond that. As an emokid straight outta the mid-aughts (hey there goes my claim to any valid political opinion! later, bro!), have a special connection to "Boys of Summer," tho. Is Don Henley's version The Ataris' version? No. It is not. But we set the precedent in the Roberta Flack threepeat that, even though this is Record of the Year, we will recognize the power of the composition. We also must acknowledge that "Money for Nothing" is the absolute fucking worst.
TRUE ENDING: "The Boys of Summer"
1987 "Sledgehammer," by Peter Gabriel "Greatest Love of All," by Whitney Houston "Addicted to Love," by Robert Palmer "That's What Friends Are For," by Dionne Warwick & Friends WINNER: "Higher Love," by Steve Winwood
One other notable change, apart from the fact the songs are now actual songs that I can imagine people casually listening to in the era in which they were released: these songs are fucking long. You go back to the first Grammys, I don't think any songs lasted past 3:15, and now we have "Sledgehammer," which lasts five minutes. All the songs from the 1986 field were five minutes long. It sort of feels like we've trimmed the excess in our modern era, because my reaction to all these songs is, "Alright, I'm feeling this one! I am grooving! ...Okay, I've grooved. I've felt it. You can go now. No, you can g -- oh, more? OK, cool, I guess that's cool." Except "Addicted to Love." That's a positively breezy four minutes, and it holds the attention the entire time. It's slightly leery? It's kind of "Blurred Lines"y? But it's not overtly gross that it's unworthy of celebration!
TRUE ENDING: "Addicted to Love"
1988 "La Bamba," by Los Lobos "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," by U2 "Luka," by Suzanne Vega "Back in the High Life Again," by Steve Winwood WINNER: "Graceland," by Paul Simon
...Yeah, fuck it, "La Bamba," I don't like that the choice I have to make is a cover of a '50s hit, but HASHTAG GRAMMYS, amirite. Time to look at Wikipedia because the Grammys have displeased me! ...OK, so there's "I Wanna Dance with Somebody." "Alone" has been a stable of reality singing competitions for thirty years, now! "Bad" woulda been acceptable. "Don't Dream It's Over" may not be the most notable tune in the world, but unlike eventual champion "La Bamba," it was made in 1987. "UM "FAITH" HOW ABOUT?! "The Final Countdown" is listed as a 1987 single and I get why it wouldn't get ROTY love but I would be remiss not to point out its presence on the list. Who doen't love "(I Just) Died in Your Arms?" LL Cool J coulda gotten some hype, I'm not gonna pretend to be familiar with '80s rap but that's a name I know. "Need You Tonight" got INXS a reality show 20 years later. WHAT THE FUCK YOU COULD'VE EASILY REPLACED "LA BAMBA" WITH "RHYTHM IS GONNA GET YOU." "Welcome to the Jungle" is a metal song, sure, but you're gonna tell me that's less influential than "Graceland?" Also I changed my mind because I forgot how fucking good "Luka" is.
TRUE ENDING: "Luka."
1989 "Giving You the Best That I Got," by Anita Baker "Fast Car," by Tracy Chapman "Man in the Mirror," by Michael Jackson "Roll with It," by Steve Winwood WINNER: "Don't Worry, Be Happy," by Bobby McFerrin
I commend "Don't Worry, By Happy" for laying the foundation for maybe the greatest Key & Peele sketch, and I'm loathe to pick two unrelentingly sad songs about good people in awful situations in a row, but, like, "Fast Car." "Fast Car," y'all.
TRUE ENDING: "Fast Car"
1990 "The End of the Innocence," by Don Henley "She Drives Me Crazy," by Fine Young Cannibals "We Didn't Start the Fire," by Billy Joel "The Living Years," by Mike + the Mechanics WINNER: "Wind Beneath My Wings," by Bette Midler
So apparently the two things I liked about the 1980s are the kitschy one-hit-wonder-y singles that are completely of their times, and the songs about horrifying tragedies. But y'know what at least those were closer to the vision of '80s music I had in my head than the options from the '70s were to ‘70s music. I don't know if that sentence makes sense. I've listened to a lot of bad and/or trashy music. For no reason. When was the last time I asked why I was doing this? I would like to ask that question again: why am I doing this
TRUE ENDING: "She Drives Me Crazy"
1991 "Vision of Love," by Mariah Carey "U Can't Touch This," by MC Hammer "From a Distance," by Bette Midler "Nothing Compares 2 U," by Sinead O'Connor WINNER: "Another Day in Paradise," by Phil Collins
MC Hammer has more ROTY nominations as a performer than Prince. The first rap song ever nominated for ROTY was "U Can't Touch This." MC Hammer was the first rapper to earn a ROTY nomination. ...You're right, this isn't fair, MC Hammer apparently built himself, and the distinction easily could've gone to MC Skat Kat. That's the motto: no matter how bad, it could always be worse. TRUE ENDING: "Vision of Love"
1992 "(Everything I Do) I Do it for You," by Bryan Adams "Baby Baby," by Amy Grant "Something to Talk About," by Bonnie Raitt "Losing My Religion," by R.E.M. WINNER: "Unforgettable," by Natalie Cole w/Nat King Cole
I am 100% convinced "Unforgettable" only won because the Grammys were completely in love with the fact Natalie Cole and Nat King Cole performed together. "Look!" they said, laughing and clapping. "Their names are of similar mouthsound! Delightful!" Anyway, instead of the idiosyncratic rock song, we're going with the country song about doin' it.
TRUE ENDING: "Something to Talk About"
1993 "Achy Breaky Heart," by Billy Ray Cyrus "Beauty & the Beast," by Celine Dion & Peabo Bryson "Constant Craving," by k.d. lang "Save the Best for Last," by Vanessa Williams WINNER: "Tears in Heaven," by Eric Clapton
OH SHIT THE GRAMMYS JUST HIT US WITH THE THROWBACK! Awful novelty single? CHECK. Treacly ballad? CHECK. Ponderous slow song from an influential-but-overlooked performer? I FEEL BAD ABOUT SAYING IT BECAUSE IT'S A SONG ABOUT HIS KID WHO DIED BUT, OKAY, THIS IS WHO I AM, CHECK. And we have A NEW KIND OF BAD this year: THE POP VERSION OF THE SONG FROM THE MOVIE MUSICAL. Angela Lansbury or GTFO. k.d. lang does sort of earn this by default, I'm not gonna lie to you and say I dug the song presented to me, but I absoltuely respect the pioneering work she did in advancing stylization in performers' name. k.d. lang paved the streets on which Panic! At the Disco marches.
TRUE ENDING: "Constant Craving"
1994 "A Whole New World," by Peabo Bryson & Regina Belle "The River of Dreams," by Billy Joel "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You," by Sting "Harvest Moon," by Neil Young WINNER: "I Will Always Love You," by Whitney Houston
The end result is always the same, no matter what, but hoo boy, this sequence is something else. '90s music is generally ugh, but you had "Nuthin' but a 'G' Thang," "Mr. Jones," "No Rain," "Shoop," "What's Up?" But this. Billy Joel. Again. It's only been three times or something but it feels like Billy Joel has been nominated for this award every year.
TRUE ENDING: "I Will Always Love You"
1995 "I'll Make Love to You," by Boyz II Men "He Thinks He'll Keep Her," by Mary Chapin Carpenter "Love Sneakin' up on You," by Bonnie Raitt "Streets of Philadelphia," by Bruce Springsteen WINNER: "All I Wanna Do," by Sheryl Crow
The Grammys have relapsed pretty hard. And because we're in the 1990s, and also I've kind of hit a wall in terms of my enthusiasm for this project, I'm not even listening to these songs, because there's not any lessons to be gleaned here, music was being taken over by grunge and rap and the Grammys didn't know how to react so they literally gave their biggest award to a song which states, "All I wanna do is have some fun." Let's just have some fun, guys! Stop being so sad about everything, let's just, let's play Parcheesi! You used to love Parcheesi! Let's play Parcheesi and just, let's just have some fun! But yeah the Grammys are havin' some issues coming to terms with reality.
TRUE ENDING: "I'll Make Love to You"
1996 "One Sweet Day," by Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men "Gangsta's Paradise," by Coolio "One of Us," by Joan Osborne "Waterfalls," by TLC WINNER: "Kiss from a Rose," by Seal
Now THIS. This, I can extremely fuck with. Nary a quibble I have with the Grammys' assessment of 1995! Do I maybe trade out "One Sweet Day" for "Fantasy?" Of course, I'm not that dead inside. Do I maybe replace "One of Us" with "You Oughta Know?" Eh, I think "One of Us" is more timeless, in that it's about God and not Dave Coulier, but I'd hear the argument. Do I maybe put "Life's a Bitch" in there instead of "Gangsta's Paradise?" Yes, but I completely get why they wouldn't. I think we've found it. I think we've found the most acceptable list! And the winner is almost the acceptable winner! Also, I didn't realize this until I dove into the list of hits from 1995, but apparently Ko[backwards R]n and P.O.D. were active and hitmakers in 1995. I knew it was coming soon? But I didn’t think it started when I was in Kindergarten.
TRUE ENDING: "Gangsta's Paradise"
1997 "Give Me One Reason," by Tracy Chapman "Because You Loved Me," by Celine Dion "Ironic," by Alanis Morissette "1979," by The Smashing Pumpkins WINNER: "Change the World," by Eric Clapton
And we're back. Though, hey, the Grammys are still making incremental progress. There's grunge, earning respectful recognition that it did, indeed, happen, and the Grammys were aware of it but ever distant! Alanis Morissette gets a nod for writing a song about how sometimes bad things happen! And TRACY CHAPMAN JUST ENDS THE FUCKING GAME. Someone once described "Give Me One Reason" as the last true blues hit, and that is such an accurate assessment. Everything about "Give Me One Reason" owns. I am thrilled to have shared some portion of the earth with the two Tracy Chapman songs we have briefly discussed.
TRUE ENDING: "Give Me One Reason"
1998 "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?" by Paula Cole "Everyday Is a Winding Road," by Sheryl Crow "MMMBop," by Hanson "I Believe I Can Fly," by R. Kelly WINNER: "Sunny Came Home," by Shawn Colvin
I believe it was @fart who tweeted that "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?" and "The Boys Are Back in Town" share two different perspectives of the same event, and I'm sticking to that here. This right here is sort of the distillation of the '90s, assuming you're ignoring, y'know, rap: while you can't deny that this was probably what everyone in the '90s was listening to, you can absolutely fault everyone in the '90s for listening to this, because this is bad. But this is what was popular! "MMMBop," a song about grappling with your own mortality while making mouthsounds, was the biggest fucking song! You couldn't escape it! "It" referring to "MMMBop!" Like, the 1981 field was bad? But it was bad because it was bland, and it was regressive, and it wasn't of the time. This is bad because the songs are bad. They're all dated, they have no appeal beyond kitschiness, they're just, ugh. For once, it's not the Grammys' fault. ...Not entirely. Again: rap. We had that. We didn't have do the Sheryl Crow thing again.
TRUE ENDING: "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?"
1999 "The Boy Is Mine," by Brandy & Monica "Iris," by Goo Goo Dolls "Ray of Light," by Madonna "You're Still the One," by Shania Twain WINNER: "My Heart Will Go On," by Celine Dion
The '90s weren't without their saving graces, of course. Golly. Imagine being presented with this field and voting for something that wasn't "The Boy Is Mine." So many people did! I'm not gonna sit here and say that "My Heart Will Go On" wasn't the biggest musical craze of 1998, I lived through that shit, I endured that shit, believe you me, from a historical standpoint, it deserves this award. It's not history's fault, though, that so many more people listened to "My Heart Will Go On" than "The Boy Is Mine." It's those people's fault. WHAT THE HELL, PEOPLE. What was wrong with you. ...At least you're still 15 or so years from your choice being Macklemore. It's hard to tell which is worse, but at least there's a good chunk of time between your failings.
TRUE ENDING: "The Boy Is Mine"
2000 "I Want It That Way," by Backstreet Boys "Believe," by Cher "Livin' La Vida Loca," by Ricky Martin "No Scrubs," by TLC WINNER: "Smooth," by Santana ft./Rob Thomas
...I don't like what I'm about to do. You know I think "Smooth" is a hot one. You know how I feel about guys in the passenger side of their best friend's ride, tryna holla at me. You know what I believe with regards to an existence of a life after love. You know I live that crazy life. ...If I'm doing karaoke, though. If I'm doing karaoke, and I need one song to fire every fucker in this dingy bar the fuck up, I need an all-time classic song that everyone loves and everyone knows, IF I AM SELECTING ONE JAM TO TAKE THIS PEANUT BUTTER SANDWICH CALLED LIFE TO FLAVOR TOWN. ...It's gonna be "I Want It That Way." It's a perfect song. It is expertly crafted, the epitome of Swedish song design. It's this massive engine driving this amazing being into existence. I don't like that it is perfect. You may not like that it is perfect. But it is perfect and we love it. There are truths in life which are undeniable. "I Want It That Way" is one such truth.
TRUE ENDING: "I Want It That Way"
2001 "Say My Name," by Destinys Child "I Try," by Macy Gray "Music," by Madonna "Bye Bye Bye," by *NSYNC WINNER: "Beautiful Day," by U2
ugh what is with the u2 thing Anyway, this would ideally be where we start recognizing the things Beyonce has done for the world and all who live in it, except "I Try" is amazing. Also we're in the aughts and everyone knows and loves the aughts and no one has anything bad to say about the aughts so I'm not even gonna try to stretch for profundity it's lightning round time.
TRUE ENDING: "I Try"
2002 "Video," by india.arie "Fallin'," by Alicia Keys "Ms. Jackson," by OutKast "Drops of Jupiter (Tell Me)," by Train WINNER: "Walk On," by U2
SERIOUSLY THIS U2 THING. WHAT ARE THEY SEEING THAT I'M NOT. WHAT COULD THERE POSSIBLY BE IN THERE. Anyway, hello. Rap has been around for two and a half decades and three rap songs have been nominated for Record of the Year in this space. That is as many rap songs as U2 songs in the same span of time. And lemme just skip ahead real quick here, and... Yep, yep, of course, the entire genre of rap and U2 are still tied in the official Record of the Year Grammy count! That's incredibly acceptable and great.
TRUE ENDING: "Ms. Jackson"
2003 "A Thousand Miles," by Vanessa Carlton "Without Me," by Eminem "Dilemma," by Nelly & Kelly Rowland "How You Remind Me," by Nickelback WINNER: "Don't Know Why," by Norah Jones
Legit question: is "Dilemma" the last great duet? I know Drake and Rihanna have put in work trying to find a great duet, I know Usher and Alicia Keys dropped "My Boo," I'm going to point out New Found Glory and Hayley Williams collaborated on "Vicious Love" and wait until this point is completely ignored before I move on, there we go, I think this might be the last great pop duet! I think the last great pop duet features the iconic screencap of Microsoft Excel Messenger!
TRUE ENDING: "Dilemma"
2004 "Crazy in Love," by Beyonce ft./Jay-Z "Where Is the Love?" by The Black Eyed Peas "Lose Yourself," by Eminem "Hey Ya!" by OutKast WINNER: "Clocks," by Coldplay
See, I'm disqualifying "Crazy in Love" from consideration from the "great duets" debate because it's not a duet. Jay-Z has a feature verse. Anyway: FUCK THIS. "Crazy in Love" vs. "Hey Ya!" absolutely 100% fuck this. Like that's a goddamn debate right there. There could be an entire 1000-episode podcast debating who should have won this category, "Crazy in Love" or "Hey Ya!" And it's not like the other three are slouches. "Lose Yourself" is disappointingly but definitely more popular than either track, "Where Is the Love?" is the kinda-awesome midpoint between Woke BEP and Party BEP, and I'd bop "Clocks" from the party but I'd let it hang for a few minutes, get a glimpse of a world other than its own before throwing it out on its ass. But "Crazy in Love" vs. "Hey Ya!" Fuck, dude. ...Grammys can tie, right? Yeah, there's ties in the Grammys. Fuck it, even if there's not ties in the Grammys, there's ties in this weird alternate reality Grammys because legitimately how the fuck do you choose.
TRUE ENDING: "Hey Ya!" & "Crazy in Love"
2005 "Let's Get it Started," by The Black Eyed Peas "American Idiot," by Green Day "Heaven," by Los Lonely Boys "Yeah!" by Usher ft./Lil' Jon & Ludacris WINNER: "Here We Go Again," by Ray Charles & Norah Jones
...Like?
TRUE ENDING: "Yeah!"
2006 "We Belong Together," by Mariah Carey "Feel Good Inc.," by Gorillaz ft./De La Soul "Hollaback Girl," by Gwen Stefani "Gold Digger," by Kanye West ft./Jamie Foxx WINNER: "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," by Green Day
...OK, shit. Um. "We Belong Together" set the Mariah comeback in stone and history has a place for it, but I don't have a trophy for it. It's "Gold Digger" vs. "Boulevard" for me, and... And I think I gotta give it to. "Boulevard?" See, here's the thing, though, if "Stronger" were nominated a few years down the line, or "Love Lockdown," or "Niggas in Paris," yes! Absolutely, there'd be an argument! But "Gold Digger" is... Not his finest song? It's a funny-ish song about a stereotype. It has charm, it has that Ray Charles sample, but it's sort of, what's the phrase I'm looking for? Chop up the soul Kanye? It's that. It's good not great. "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" is a song that captured the hopelessness and futility of life as a lower-class individual in the Bush era and is presently capturing the hopelessness and futility of life as anyone in the Trump era. The world needed and continues to need songs like that.
TRUE ENDING: "Boulevard of Broken Dreams"
2007 "Be Without You," by Mary J. Blige "You're Beautiful," by James Blunt "Crazy," by Gnarls Barkley "Put Your Records On," by Corinne Bailey Rae WINNER: "Not Ready to Make Nice," by Dixie Chicks
"Not Ready to Make Nice" is the shit. I wanted Mary J. Blige or Gnarls Barkley to win, I could almost write that argument, but I just, "Not Ready to Make Nice" is the angriest song ever written. It is the apotheosis of the "message to the haters" song; it walks the same thematic ground as Tay Tay's "Shake It Off," but thunder emanates from its every step. And it's angry in that plain-spoken metaphorless way only country music can pull off. She does not obscure what has her fucked up: the letter stated, "shut up and sing or your life will be over." She is not going to forget. It's so powerful. Does it define 2006 in music? No, let's not be silly, "SexyBack" owned the year, Timbaland had more than a few songs hit #1, this song didn't have reach or impacy beyond the Grammy, but this song. This fucking song, man.
TRUE ENDING: "Not Ready to Make Nice"
2008 "Irreplaceable," by Beyonce "The Pretender," by Foo Fighters "Umbrella," by Rihanna ft./Jay-Z "What Goes Around.../...Comes Around," by Justin Timberlake WINNER: "Rehab," by Amy Winehouse
okay no need to write an extended defense of this one, we know what's up
TRUE ENDING: "Irreplaceable"
2009 "Chasing Pavements," by Adele "Viva la Vida," by Coldplay "Bleeding Love," by Leona Lewis "Paper Planes," by M.I.A. WINNER: "Please Read the Letter," by Robert Plant & Alison Krauss

TRUE ENDING: "Paper Planes"
2010 "Halo," by Beyonce "I Gotta Feeling," by The Black Eyed Peas "Poker Face," by Lady Gaga "You Belong with Me," by Tay Tay WINNER: "Use Somebody," by Kings of Leon
oh wow, so, y'know, okay, how? how do we still have years like this? i know dope tunes were released in 2009 because i lived it, how do so many people get together and think, "yes! these!" this field is so bad, if you dropped drake's "best i ever had" into it, it would have a legit claim to the title. this is unconscionable! i hate this! why did i do this?
TRUE ENDING: "Poker Face"
2011 "Nothin' on You," by B.O.B. ft./Bruno Mars "Love the Way You Lie," by Eminem & Rihanna "Fuck You," by Cee Lo Green "Empire State of Mind," by Jay-Z ft./Alicia Keys WINNER: "Need You Now," by Lady Antebellum
Ah, the poetry of a group with the word Antebellum in their name emerging from a pack of black artists to claim a trophy they didn't deserve. Memories! What lovely recent history! Anyhoo, as sure as the earth is round, "Fuck You" is the best pop song of the decade so far. I'll fight you. Dungeon fam, I just gave you two Grammys for the mantle.
TRUE ENDING: "Fuck You"
2012 "Holocene," by Bon Iver "Grenade," by Bruno Mars "The Cave," by Mumford & Sons "Firework," by Katy Perry TRUE ENDING: "Rolling in the Deep," by Adele
"love on top," "party rock anthem," "niggas in paris," "the motto," "the edge of glory." what the fuck, you guys. picking songs that are good isn't hard but you fucked it up five times in a row somehow.
TRUE ENDING: i mean "Rolling in the Deep" i guess? ye gods this is dire
2013 "Lonely Boy," by The Black Keys "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)," by Kelly Clarkson "We Are Young," by Fun. ft./Janelle Monae "Thinkin Bout You," by Frank Ocean "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," by Tay Tay WINNER: "Somebody That I Used to Know," by Gotye ft./Kimbra
So now that we have years and years of historical context for the Grammys, let's take a minute to discuss what a miracle it was that Frank Ocean was ever nominated. The Grammys spent years ignoring anything resembling a subculture. As the 1960s grew increasingly psychedelic, the Grammys kept handing out nominations to Frank Sinatra and jazz instrumentals and gentle sweater dads. They dipped their toes into funkier things in the '70s, but they stayed the hell away from actual funk, from rock, from anything that looked like it might have been near cocaine at any point in their life. They gave Frank Sinatra a ROTY nomination in 1980. 1980! The Grammys had shown zero sign that they were even close to acknowledging a black man with ambiguous sexuality singing songs just on the edge of the mainstream existed. "Thinkin Bout You" peaked at 32 Stateside. There would have been zero outcry outside of The Internet if his song weren't nominated. And yet! They did! I don't get how, but I dig it! Anyway the best song of these six is "We Are Young" and how. How is "Call Me Maybe." ...A thousand steps forward, one step back, I guess.
TRUE ENDING: "We Are Young"
2014 "Radioactive," by Imagine Dragons "Royals," by Lorde "Locked Out of Heaven," by Bruno Mars "Blurred Lines," by Robin Thicke ft./Pharrell Williams & T.I. WINNER: "Get Lucky," by Daft Punk ft./Pharrell Williams
yeah they got it right, i don't care
TRUE ENDING: "Get Lucky"
2015 "Fancy," by Iggy Azalea ft./Charli XCX "Chandelier," by Sia "Shake It Off," by Tay Tay "All About that Bass," by Meghan Trainor WINNER: "Stay with Me," by Sam Smith
wooooooooooooooooooooooooow you really dont have to go back that far to find one of the all-time worst fields. i don't know if we've dropped any song off the face of the earth faster than "fancy," i barely even remembered it existed. "all about that bass" gets more embarrassing with each passing day. "stay with me" is mor pap. "shake it off" is horrifyingly immature and features tay tay rapping, which is, it's just a gross thing to have experienced. "chandelier." "chandelier" almost single-handedly redeems this field. i know i've used this blog to discuss what a miracle it is that sia exists as she does in the music landscape today, but legitimately, what the fuck. how? i don't mind! but how? but no for real "Chandelier," "Happy," "Problem," "Drunk in Love..." hoo boy 2014 was dire, uh, "Timber." shit, dude, yeah, "Timber." ok. ok yeah i guess it's ok as long as "Rude!" didn't make the cut.
TRUE ENDING: "Chandelier"
2016 "Really Love," by D'Angelo & the Vanguard "Thinking Out Loud," by Ed Sheeran "Blank Space," by Tay Tay "Can't Feel My Face," by The Weeknd WINNER: "Uptown Funk," by Mark Ronson ft./Bruno Mars
"Uptown Funk"/"Can't Feel My Face" is the toughest choice since "Hey Ya!"/"Crazy in Love." I think I give it to "Uptown Funk," simply because it doesn't feel like "Can't Feel My Face" exists without it, but man, "Can't Feel My Face" is such a solid track.
TRUE ENDING: "Uptown Funk"
2017 "Hello," by Adele "Formation," by Beyonce "7 Years," by Lukas Graham "Work," by Rihanna ft./Drake "Stressed Out," by twenty one pilots
listen, if i had to pick the field, it's "formation," "stresed out," "love yourself," "closer," and "black beatles." maybe throw "panda" in there over "stressed out," more people seemed to be into that than "stressed out," who cares, 2016 just wasn't great for anything on earth which exists, but hey! at least this field is more or less accurate! i don't know what "7 years" is doing here, and neither do you, but i know we're both hoping it wins so we can watch the first fires of the revolution.
TRUE ENDING: "Formation"

Music Review: The Beatles' "White Album"
If you know me personally, you know I love The Beatles. And if you are “too young” to know who The Beatles are, well I’m not going to scream at you right now, but I will say that I’m sixteen and am a bit of a Beatles’ fangirl. Today, we will be looking at The White Album, released in 1968, The Beatles’ third to last album released as a band, but we will also give you listeners some history about the album and how it came to be, but I suppose for our younger audience, it’s proper etiquette to present some background on the band themselves.
The Beatles or The Fab Four were a group of lads from Liverpool, England that became a huge hit during the British Invasion. They started as a small band called The Quarrymen that performed lots of Elvis covers and some original songs at night clubs in Germany. They then moved back to England to get even bigger shows until 1964, where they were booked to perform on The Ed Sullivan Show, kicking off the British Invasion as we know it, as well as paving their way through the hearts of millions, including myself. Overall in their career as a band, they released twelve studio albums, twenty-two singles, and won twenty-five various grammy awards. They split in the April of 1970, releasing their last album a month after, but being in The Beatles’ helped kick off each member’s solo careers as musicians.
The White Album showed us the boys’, now men’s, different tastes in music. They blossomed into something completely different around the time they released Rubber Soul, but it wasn’t until The White Album that they captured their separate styles and compiled them into an album. This change was evident in every member of The Beatles, but was more vivid in the music of both John Lennon and George Harrison. John was basically just mentally gone, mainly because of all the drugs he was into, but who wasn’t doing some form of drug in the late 1960s? Lennon’s drug addiction was apparent in “Happiness is a Warm Gun”, which talks about his sexual relations with his second wife, and “Revolution 9”, which we will talk about in a bit.
George Harrison didn’t really have many of the songs that he wrote debuted until this album, but during the recordings of The White Album, he started recording with a variety of different artists and bands, a couple of whom were Chris Thomas, who played piano and organ for “Savoy Truffle” and “Long, Long, Long”, and Eric Clapton, who played lead guitar for “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”. It was apparent in 1966 that Harrison was mentally separating from the group, with him wanting to stop touring and make more albums, but the history in this album really shows that divide starting to form in the band.
Speaking of an unspoken divide, during the recording sessions of The White Album, there was a portion where Ringo Starr, the drummer for The Beatles, just quit the band and didn’t come back for a week. Ringo mentioned the week he quit in The Beatles Anthology, saying: “I left because I felt two things: I felt I wasn't playing great, and I also felt that the other three were really happy and I was an outsider. I went to see John, who had been living in my apartment in Montagu Square with Yoko since he moved out of Kenwood. I said, 'I'm, leaving the group because I'm not playing well and I feel unloved and out of it, and you three are really close.' And John said, 'I thought it was you three!' So then I went over to Paul's and knocked on his door. I said the same thing: 'I'm leaving the band. I feel you three guys are really close and I'm out of it.' And Paul said, 'I thought it was you three!' I didn't even bother going to George then. I said, 'I'm going on holiday.' I took the kids and we went to Sardinia.”
Ringo came back to open arms and George Harrison even decorated his drum kit in flowers for him, and the creation process for The White Album started again! This is absolutely one of my favourite albums by The Beatles. Not only is it their biggest album, with two double-sided records, but it’s their rawest album yet. Everyone’s tastes are in this. George Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”, John Lennon’s “Julia”, Ringo Starr’s “Don’t Pass Me By” is always a good laugh, but the real beauty is Paul McCartney’s “Blackbird”. It’s definitely one of their more well-known tunes, but I love how beautiful that ballad is, which is why it gets song of the week. Rather difficult to play on guitar, it’s truly a classic from The White Album, especially because it was all Paul. Paul singing, Paul playing the guitar, and Paul keeping time by tapping his foot. If you haven’t heard that song before and you enjoy acoustic music, definitely give that a listen.
The White Album is also unique for not identifying with just one specific genre, but many! Of course, you have your classic rock and pop in the album, but “Helter Skelter” is far away from either of those genres. “Helter Skelter” actually brought some metal into the album and really surprised me when I first gave it a listen. The rest of the album is nothing like “Helter Skelter”, and historically, this song and the album itself come to be a bit shocking, thanks to a guy by the name of Charles Manson.
Manson and his “family” committed several gruesome murders in LA in the late 1960s, including the murder of a popular actress by the name of Sharon Tate. Charles Manson is an dark, mentally ill man that believed The White Album had some biblical meaning behind it. There’s even a Wikipedia page of all of Charles Manson’s “translations” to every song on The White Album. In his trial in 1970, he actively made references to The White Album, as well as the Bible’s Book of Revelations. Charles Manson’s definition of the song “Helter Skelter” is a bit gruesome as a whole, saying that it was discussing a racist Armageddon, with whites against blacks. In reality, the British definition for “helter skelter” is a slide. It’s literally a slide that they have at British fairs.
The album has its weird spots and weird songs, obviously, with the second weirdest being “Revolution 9”, as I mentioned earlier. It’s a bunch of sound clips that John Lennon tied together in an attempt to make something in a music/art experiment called “musique concrète”, which was mainly something Yoko Ono wanted. No surprise. I won’t get into too much into detail, just because this piece is a bit odd, but there are some really weird conspiracy theories revolving around “Revolution 9”. If you choose to read more on Beatles conspiracy theories, start with the “Paul is Dead” conspiracy. Just brace yourself ahead of time.
While The Beatles’ history can get strange in certain spots, their music is still the best out there. If you haven’t listened to any of The Beatles albums before, I wouldn’t recommend starting with The White Album, just because it’s a variety of their works and is not a straight shot into one genre. If you are more into pop music, I definitely suggest to start with their earlier works. Meet the Beatles, A Hard Day’s Night, Help!, anything pre-1965. If you are more into rock music, that’s where I would suggest anything post-1965. “Helter Skelter” is the closest you’ll get to them playing a song in the metal genre, sadly. Sorry! The first album I would suggest to the average rocker would be Abbey Road, another one of my personal favourites. It was the first vinyl record I got and I still have it. Remastered, in mint condition, sounds absolutely gorgeous. Let It Be is also a great album, even though it is their last album released as a band. It’s got some slow rock jams and ballads, but they are classics for obvious reasons.
The White Album may not have as iconic of a cover as Abbey Road does, but it was obvious that a lot more effort was put into The White Album compared to the other eleven albums that The Beatles released during their career. My vinyl of The White Album came with a poster and the back of the poster has the lyrics to every song on the album. It also came with portrait shots of all of the bandmembers. (George has never looked hotter, and I have seen A LOT of pictures of George Harrison. Don’t get a girl started.)
From the craziness that happened in the studios to the stupidity that happened once The White Album dropped on our shores, and let us not forget the drugs, The White Album is still by far one of the best Beatles albums. I give it a 10/10 for its diversity, but also for its incredibly ridiculous, dramatic and yet interesting history. None of today’s trash can top their iconic masterpieces.

She is a socialite and has also worked for the Trump Organisation since 2005. Ivanka owns a whole lifestyle collection of fragrance, footwear, handbags, and outerwear where we know the father and US President came to her rescue when she faced problems selling her products. Tom and Colin Hanks
Tom Hanks and Colin Hanks cannot go unnoticed when we talk about famous duos in the showbiz world. Perfectly following his father’s footsteps, Colin has made it big just like Tom. Tom, who is a 59-year-old veteran Hollywood actor, is the formula for a successful film for any director. Colin is one of Tom’s four children who has made a mark in the industry by his work, making his father proud. This famous duo not only works in the same industry but also look alike.
Will and Jaden Smith
Will Smith is one of the most versatile actors of Hollywood and we are fortunate enough to have his son in the same business. In the year 2006, the famous duo was first seen together in the film The Pursuit of Happiness from which the 17-year-old Jaden Smith began his career in movies. The two came together again in the year 2013, in the movie After Earth. The Day The Earth Stood Still (2008), The Karate Kid (2010) are some of Jaden’s hit movies. He is also a rapper, a dancer, and an ideal son and is also part of the fashion industry with MSFTSrepublic.
Anil and Harshvardhan Kapoor
When it comes to talking about famous duos in the Bollywood industry we are crushing over the latest hottest duo there is of Anil and Harshvardham Kapoor. Anil started working in movies in the 80s and his legacy is going strong by his son Harshvardhan who made his Bollywood debut in 2016 by movie Mirzya. This sexy duo is now seen sizzling on the famous GQ’s latest cover wearing similar shirts, jeans, and shoes, proving us that good looks run in the family. Not only are they twinning their outfits but also their beards, looking absolutely on point. Sonam Kapoor and Rhea Kapoor who are the biggest fashion stars in India would be proud of the men in their family for sure.
Johnny and Lily Rose Depp
We didn’t really know much about Lily Rose until the last two to three years when she rose to fame by starting her career in modelling and acting. She is the daughter of one of the most famous and versatile actors that Hollywood is blessed with i.e., Johnny Depp. Although the famous duo hasn’t been spotted a lot in public. Johnny, who is a Golden Globe Award winner, is a protective father. On numerous occasions, he has quoted how he worries for his daughter to get into the same business as him.
Jon Voight and Angelina Jolie
Jonathan Vincent Voight is an American actor and winner of one Academy Award, having been nominated for four. Having won four Golden Globe Awards as well, he has not had a very good relationship with his daughter Angelina. The Salt actress didn’t forgive her father for leaving her mother. But better late than never, after having so many ups and downs, this famous duo now has an amicable relationship. Despite their differences for so many years, we are happy that the two of them sorted out their problems and have been seen together so many times.
Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan
Another one of those famous duos from Bollywood is of the tall and handsome Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan. This duo is an all time favourite. Abhishek might not have been able to fill his father’s shoes when it comes to movies, but these two surely look the most dashing together. Abhishek made his debut in Bollywood in the year 2000 in Refugee but unfortunately, couldn’t live up to people’s expectations. Being the child of India’s best actor does come with a lot of responsibilities as well. Abhishek might not have made a mark in the industry individually but this famous duo has created wonders together in movies like Bunty Aur Babli, Paa, Sarkar and many more.
Out of these 15 famous duos which pair is your favourite? Let us know in the comments below and we wish all these fashionable fathers Happy Father’s Day

Q&A
Have you ever had a controlling boyfriend/girlfriend?
Never. Have you ever written a love letter to someone as a joke?
No. Who would even think of that? How many true heart breaks have you had in your lifetime?
One. Everyone has a been a lesson though. Who last grabbed your ass?
My damn self. Do you get a ‘Good Morning’ text from someone every day?
As if. Do you have any gay family members?
I do. Where did you get the shirt you are wearing?
Primark pyjamas ✌🏼 Do you feel like everything is falling apart around you?
Not so much right now. I've recently picked myself up and dusted myself off. Things are good rn. Was your first kiss romantic?
No. I was 13. It was in a garage under a blanket. Do you know anybody whose last name is a color?
Yes. What are you most likely to go to jail for? Drunk and disorderly? Assault, possibly. Do you ever feel like life is going by too fast?
All the damn time. Who was the last person to sleep over at your house?
Gemma. Is there someone that always intimidates you?
I will never let any bitch or any man intimidate me. Have you ever liked anyone that was in a relationship with someone else?
Oh yeah. Would you ever get a boob job?
It is on my list of things to do. Did your last relationship end because of you or the other person?
I actually ended it but we both played equal parts. Do you ever ignore texts from some people?
yeah, people I don't wanna talk to. Have you ever tried to break up anyone because YOU liked the guy/girl?
I've never tried, I'm not that malicious. When is the last time you felt left out?
Recently. My two besties are all loved up and then there's me. I'm gettin money tho. When was the last time you flirted with someone?
I have a really flirty personality, so I'd flirt with my cereal. Yellowcard vs Straylight Run, pick:
Means fuck all to me that. What would you think if you found out your ex was gay?
I'd be shocked but whatever makes him happy. Would you ever take someone back if you found out they cheated on you?
I don’t know. Every situation is differently and people have their reasons for cheating. I don't think everyone who cheats is a bad person nor will they continue to cheat on their future partners but there's clearly issues that need addressing in the relationship if someone cheats. What does your last text message say?
”Iona's going to bed x.” What color is your hair right now?
Medium brown. I think I'm gonna get it ombred though before I go on holiday. Do people ever compliment your eyes? Quite a lot actually. Have you ever lied to your boyfriend/girlfriend?
Yes. Do people ever tell you that you’re funny?
Yeah, I'm hysterical. Would you be upset if you caught your boyfriend looking at porn?
I do the same thing, so no. How many people has your best friend had sex with?
12/13 - I think. What’s the last song you listened to?
'Low Life' - Future ft. The Weeknd. Who’s the last person that hung up on you?
Probably Britt. Are you a bitch?
Yes. Four days from now, will you have sex?
I wish 🙄. Do you look intimidating?
I don't think I do. What does your second to last text say?
"On our way back x". What makes you laugh?
My life. What were you most looking forward to today?
A lie in and some sun. The sun was gone by 1pm though. How is your hair?
It needs washing. What are your initials?
NAT. What’s your biggest fear?
I have a lot. Death, being alone, failure. Look outside how’s the weather?
Cloudy, it was nice and sunny this morning though. Did you ever think someone didn’t like you, but come to find out they really did?
No. It tends to be the other way around with me. When was the last time you had a conversation with an ex?
A week ago. Are you worried about anything right now?
Not right now. How do you think tomorrow will be?
As good as a Monday can be. A little bit easier knowing that it's a 4 day week 💃🏽. Do you wish you could take one thing back?
I try to live with no regrets but of course I do. Is there a guy who knows everything or almost everything about you?
There was a lad who knew almost everything. Now I'd say he knows nothing. If you could pack your bags right now and were given a plane ticket, where do you go?
LA. Have you ever given anyone more than three chances?
I barely give people one. How far away are you from the person you have feelings for?
Like 45 minutes. Your last ex calls wanting to hangout, what do you say?
I'd say yeah. Where were you at 2 this morning?
In bed watching 13 Reasons Why. Have you ever kissed anyone who’s name started with a K?
I don't actually think so. Possibly. Probably. Have you accidentally sent a text to the wrong person?
Yeah and accidentally, on purpose. Last time you were TOTALLY happy?
A few days ago. Could you go the rest of your life without drinking alcohol?
No way. Ever given your all to someone who walked away?
Every. Single. Time. Have you ever done your makeup in class?
Nah, wouldn't leave the house without it on. Is there anything currently hurting on your body?
Nope. How old were you when you stopped sleeping with a night light?
An actual night light - probably 10/11. I used to sleep with the TV on after that. Ever kissed someone with green eyes?
Probably. Are you a jealous person?
I try not to be and I tell myself that I'm not but people give you reasons to be. Always trust your instincts. When you are home alone, do you still close the door when you shower?
Yeah. Are you mad at anyone right now?
Nope. Positive vibes only. Do you like your music loud or at a reasonable level?
Loud, what's the point otherwise. Is there anyone you wish you could be spending time with right now?
Of course. Have you held hands with anyone in the past 30 hours?
My baby sister. Do you have a friend named Ashley?
I do not. How often do you sleep in?
Weekends. Will you be in a relationship next month?
99.999999% sure I won't. Do you stay up later than ten o’clock on a week night?
No. Who’s the last person you told a secret to?
I don't actually know. I don't have many secrets. Have you met someone in the last year who turned out to be amazing?
Yes and I'm grateful for them all coming into my life. Do you think someone is thinking about you right now?
Probably not. Do you miss anyone?
Not really. Would you rather have big or small dogs? I do not judge. Any size dog would be welcomed with open arms. Will you cry tonight?
Nahhh. Do you have respect for people even if you don’t like them?
Of course. Usually they act disrespectful. What’s one fruit you love in drinks?
Lemon. What was the most people you ever tripped in front of? A few people in club probably. Have you ever tried wine?
Yes, love it 😍. Can heartbreak happen all at once, or over a long period of time?
Heartbreak takes so many forms. In your life, do you plan on visiting other countries?
I have visited a few and I plan on visiting a whole lot more. Do you believe everyone deserves a second chance?
I think it depends on the person and the circumstances. But nothing more than a second chance. Is there an ex you want to make up with?
I'm on good terms with the ones I wanna be in good terms with. Do you take compliments well?
Probably too well. Does cuddling freak you out?
No. How much time do you take to get ready in the morning?
About an hour/hour and a half. Do you love where you live?
I do yeah. I'm very proud of my city. What do you label yourself as?
I don’t. Do you think you will be in a relationship 3 months from now?
Probably not. Will your next kiss be drunk or sober?
99.99% drunk. Are you a mean person?
No. Do you wear high heels everyday?
Only on a night out. Do you fall asleep texting every night?
Nope. Are you an aunt or an uncle?
I am an aunt to 3 lads. Were you texting someone right before you fell asleep last night?
Nope. Did you have any unread text messages when you woke up today? How many?
Nope. Name someone who made you smile today?
The pizza delivery man. Are you happy?
Yes. I'm generally a happy person. Are you an alcoholic?
No, live a bevy though. Can you go a day without thinking about the person that’s on your mind now?
Yes, to be honest, he's not on my mind that often. Could you go the rest of your life without a cigarette?
Yeah, probably. Does anyone know every little detail about you?
No, I don't think anyone ever would. Does it bother you when someone lies to you?
Of course. I don't see the point. I'm very open minded so I don't think there's a need. What’s one thing you really want right now?
Pizza. Who all do you have texts from in your phone?
I keep all my texts. Who do you trust most as of now?
Me, myself & I. Who was the last person you took a picture with?
My sister, Britt. Do you have a younger sister?
I have 2 younger sisters. Did anything “cute” happen today?
My baby sister sat in the sun, playing her guitar and singing The Beatles. Are you wearing shoes right now?
Nope, I'm in bed. Have you ever just laid outside and looked at the stars?
Yeah, I love it. Do feet gross you out?
Yeah, they're vile. Are you currently wanting any piercings or tattoos?
Yes!! I was actually gonna go and get one today. Do you smile everyday?
Yes. Who are you more like, mom or dad?
I definitely see both of them in me, but I'd say my mum. Could you date someone shorter than you?
Probably not. Where do you wish you were right now?
Ibiza. Have a crazy side?
Oh yeah. Something you do a lot?
Work, eat. Angry at anyone?
Nope. Describe your life in one word?
Content. Who was the last person who gave you a hug?
Iona. What is your natural hair color?
Medium brown. How many people have you kissed?
Hahaha, countless. How many of those did you make out with?
All of them. Ever kissed someone you weren’t dating at the time?
Yeah. Ever kissed someone you’d met less than an hour before?
Yeah. Of the people you’ve kissed, how many do you regret kissing?
None really. Were any of them in relationships with someone else at the time?
Yes. How old was the oldest person you’ve kissed?
I'm not entirely sure. How young was the youngest person you’ve kissed?
He's 20, I'm 22. Ever been kissed by a legal adult when you were a minor (or vise-versa)?
Nope. Ever been kissed by someone you didn’t want to kiss?
Yes. Ever been walked in on while you were making out with someone?
Yeah, that doesn't really bother me though. By your parents?:
I don't think so. Weirdest place you’ve kissed someone? Don't think I've ever kissed someone in a weird place. Ever kissed someone and had someone else get really mad about it?
Oh yes. Ever stopped kissing someone because they had bad breath?
Yeah. Ever not known the name of someone you kissed?
Yeah. Ever kissed someone on a dare/as part of a game?
Yeah. Kissed someone you didn’t really like just to make someone else jealous?
Um, not really. Ever had a really horrible kissing experience?
Oh yes. Ever been called a bad kisser?
No, not to my face anyway 😂. Ever called someone else a bad kisser?
Yup. Where’s the most public place you’ve ever made out with someone?
A club, park, town. Where’s the most private place you’ve ever made out with someone?
My bedroom. Ever kissed some out of pity just so they would stop badgering you?
Yeah. Ever kissed someone just to forget about someone else?
Yep. Ever thought of someone else while you were kissing someone?
Yeah. Do you usually kiss on the first date?
Yeah, I think a kiss is fine on a first date.
