Yes, we’re down to the last few days of the Deviant: The Renegades Kickstarter campaign, and backers have been talking full-time with developer Eric Zawadzki about all the options contained in the previews AND in the Stretch Goal projects. It’s been really great seeing folks come up with how popular (and unpopular, for that matter) characters in various media can be replicated in Deviant.
There’s been a ton of them, and it’s just awesome how flexible the character creation section is! Dave Brookshaw’s extensive process and playtesting is really paying off with a system that absolutely shines.
So, c’mon! Check it out while we’re still rolling and if you pledge you’ll be getting those sweet Stretch Goal projects as well as Deviant itself with your pledge!
And while Deviant is the last KS standing right now, our joint Creature Collection KS with Handiwork Games ended over the weekend with a satisfying amount that’s over 400% our funding amount, a great number of backers, and a fantastic 224 pages (we started with 160).
A huge round of thanks and appreciation to Handiwork and Jon and all his team over there! It is really one sweet project they put together – and even before the KS was over they had hired new writers and artists to start on the added sections. Our Creature Collection is in good hand(s) – iwork.
OK, even I think that’s a groaner, but I wrote it and it’s staying in as I gotta move on to the next topic!

Over the weekend, I also attended the SAVE convention in Harrisburg, PA. Not only was I joined by Eddy and Dixie, but surprise guest Neall Raemonn Price showed up! He was able to join us on panels, and we had a lot, I mean A LOT, of discussion of upcoming projects – tons of Scion talk, but also a couple of upcoming and currently secret projects.
SAVE itself was bigger than ever, and Saturday it was packed in the gaming area. Even more interesting to me, was the education and therapy tracks (as opposed to the game design and gaming ones I was in), because these were also packed with folks wanting to discuss and learn about how our hobby can be used to build understanding and help with therapeutic efforts.
What a fantastic place we are now in where we don’t have to only mention those anecdotal stories of roleplaying helping folks in their real lives, we now have real, practicing therapists and educators stepping up with methodologies. Very proud of my friends in the Bodhana Group for being forerunners in this effort!
On a personal gaming level, Friday night at the convention I stepped up and DM’d my long-time D&D world for the first time for adults in about thirty years. I just felt like if we’re publishing so many D&D 5e based game lines, I needed to be able to talk about them with experience, not just from playing a few campaigns.
So I girded my loins, converted an adventure I’d written that was published in White Wolf Magazine #15, and sat down with Eddy, Dixie, Neall, and Jen, Jack, and the Captain, from Bodhana. It was extremely fun, and very satisfying – even if we roleplayed so hard the party never actually got into the dungeon part!
They did however talk themselves into a free room at a very nice inn due to some high charisma dice rolling and simple chicanery, burn up two enemies and part of a pine forest, and team-work the hell out of young Frost Giant.
I’ve received a fair number of requests to continue the game, so that’s a good sign, and I’ll just have to see what I can do. Dunno if I’ve shaken off all the rust from decades of not running a game, but I also hate saying no to people who want to join me in my imaginary world. So….

Last week also saw the release to the public of one of our secret projects: the phone app version of Pugmire! The folks at DTRPG used Pugmire as their first premiere project and worked up an awesome version of the core book, that they then offered as a free download – and I understand that they’ve had over 7,000 of those downloads!
Here’s a direct link: https://phone.drivethrurpg.com/phone-pdf/?affiliate_id=4451
There’s are also some great games from other publishers on there, and we have at least one more project to add – again, one of the things we’ve been doing behind the scenes – you’d be surprised at how many of those are bubbling along right now!
Now for some useful sales info!
First, DTRPG is having their big Halloween Sale on DriveThruRPG and Storytellers Vault starting Wednesday the 16th and running until Halloween. Most of our Chronicles of Darkness PDFs will be on sale on both sites, plus there will be some Halloween Treats (i.e. free PDFs) hidden around the sites.
Here’s a link to a teaser for a Geist 2e game being run by Eric Campbell: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3GOzzE8b3Wc
Here’s a link to this very cool Scion teaser announcing the project is being translated and published in Spain by The Hills Press! We think it’s an excellent video, a super teaser, and we just couldn’t be happier to be working with these folks!
Maybe the next line should be “Many Teasers, One Path”… maybe not. Let’s stick with:
Many Worlds, One Path!

We’ve really increased production of content for our Twitch channel in the last week! Every day has new content, every day has a different game, and much of that content is now being transferred to our YouTube channel.
I’m going to link both here in case you’re not following / subscribed to them. www.twitch.tv/theonyxpath & www/youtube.com/user/theonyxpath
It really helps us to have subscribers on our Twitch channel, and you can do so for free and catch premieres as they go up if you have an Amazon Prime account. Just type Twitch Amazon Prime into Google and you’ll be shown how to subscribe for free.
Also on our Twitch channel, we’ve been proceeding well with Character Creation Month, having created characters for Scarred Lands and Deviant: The Renegades. Also tied into those two games, Eric Zawadski has run a two-parter Deviant chronicle which will soon be transferred to YouTube, and Matthew Dawkins ran a very fun Scarred Lands meatgrinder, to show off some of the monsters from the Creature Collection. A different character dies in every scene!
We have so much fun content coming out soon, with this weekend hosting a Trinity Continuum character creation session, so please catch that if you’re at all interested in Trinity!
Remember, if you miss any content on our Twitch channel, some of it finds its way to our YouTube channel here: www.youtube.com/user/theonyxpath Don’t forget though, that some of that content is Twitch exclusive or belongs to the Storytellers running their games, so don’t miss out and remember to follow us!
Meanwhile, our fans keep creating excellent content for us, not limited to:

To Boldly Go Where No Photo Has Gone Before.... I first heard about Star Trek: The Next Generation: 365 at the beginning of this year. From the first blurb I read online I knew I would buy this book. After all, I have been buying "glossy" Star Trek books for nearly twenty years so I pre-ordered on Amazon and began the long wait for the Autumn release. Go to Amazon
For big-time TNG geeks I love TNG and loved this book. It is an episode-by-episode guide to the behind the scenes experience of the writers, producers, and actors in this show. Some of the information in the book, enthusiasts are likely to already have heard, but I was surprised at some of the insights in the episode guides. After watching the Chaos on the Bridge documentary, I realized that this book did not get into a lot of the production-related drama and misery it took to get this show on the air, but some of that frank honesty comes through in parts. Go to Amazon
Just Buy This! I love this Book! A great item to add to your collection or give as a gift for a Star Trek fan. I read the whole thing cover to cover and I learned a lot, and it also motivated me to go back to certain episodes and rewatch them. It reinvigorated my love for the show. My copy was used (I think there is no reason to buy this new, since the new price Is more pricey) it had the remainder mark of the bottom (black line) but honestly we don't even notice this and it doesn't lessen our enjoyment of the book. Go to Amazon
A good episode companion ~ Bought new from Amazon directly. Had a surplus mark on the top pages. Some cover wear, but I assume this was because it was sitting on the shelf somewhere before Amazon acquired them. The pages were in perfect condition, so I assume it was never previously owned, but just sat on a bookstore shelf somewhere for a year or two. Go to Amazon
Great Trip Down Memory Lane This book, and the Original Series version that preceded it, are wonderful additions to your Star Trek collection. Lots of photos, many of which I had not seen before. I have been a fan of both series for years, and I still learned several things that I did not know by reading it. They give an excellent synopsis of each episdode, with lots of background material on the origins of the series and casting decisions. Some of the pictures in the TNG book are not great quality, but the author explains that this is due to the filming method of the episdodes and the ability to pull screen shots. This would be a perfect Christmas gift for any Next Generation fan. Go to Amazon
Bought for the husband, ended up reading it all. My husband is a great fan of both TNG and Ronald D Moore, so this book was a no-brainer, gift wise. I figured it would have some cool pics we'd never seen before, and some cool anecdotes about filming the show. Yeah, it had that. But to stop there would be to do this book a great disservice. It's the definitive volume on the creation of the series. Some of the stories told here may even make you cry. Fantastic pics, as one might expect. Put aside some time though, not only will you want to spend a LOT of time with this book, but you may feel an urge--as we did, to watch the whole series over again. Go to Amazon
It is keeping my hubby busy He is very pleased and excited with the information he is finding in this book. He has always been a big Star Trek fan and knows a lot about the shows but seems to find new info all the time as he reads through this book. I only gave it a 4 because I was a bit disappointed with the quality of the pictures. Other reviews made it sound like they were really something special but I found the picture quality to be a bit weak. It is quite heavy, too.(that is not a bad thing since I know it will hold up) Go to Amazon
MAKE IT SO! So this is for the Kindle Edition. It's a lot easier to lug around on my iPad or view on my computer than a big book would be. I already have the TOS version in hardcover and it IS cool, but I do prefer to read things online when I can. Go to Amazon
Five Stars Five Stars Five Stars This book is pretty good. It has a lot of very interesting ... I love this. I read the pages before and after ... Five Stars Four Stars Another Great Star Trek book Great book! If there's any drawback to this book is it's size & that it really doesn't spend any time with the 4 features films although the

Prince of the Blood by Raymond E. Feist (fantasy)
If there were two more impetuous and carefree men in the Kingdom of the Isles, they had yet to be found. Twins Borric and Erland wore that mantle proudly, much to the chagrin of their father, Prince Arutha of Krondor. But their blissful youth has come to an end. Their uncle, the King, has produced no male children. Bypassing himself, Arutha names Borric, the eldest twin by seconds, the Royal Heir. As his brother, Erland will have his own great responsibilities to shoulder. To drive home their future roles, Arutha sends them as ambassadors to Kesh, the most feared nation in the world. Borric and Erland will be presented to the Queen of Kesh—the single most powerful ruler in the known world—at her Seventy-fifth Jubilee Anniversary. But they have not even left Krondor when an assassination attempt on Borric is thwarted. Aware that he is being provoked into war, Arutha does not rise to the bait. His sons’ journey will not be deterred, for nothing less than peace is riding on it. Yet there is to be no peace for the young princes. When their traveling party is ambushed, Borric disappears and is presumed dead—sending Erland into spirals of rage and grief as he is forced to navigate alone the court intrigues at Kesh. But unbeknownst to anyone, Borric lives and has escaped his captors. In a strange land, with a price on his head, Borric must use all his wits and stamina to find his way back to his brother.
As you know, I have many weaknesses. I’ve listed them several times. Once more I’ll say: I am weak for devil-may-care princes. A spoiled prince who learns a few lessons on his journey is a tried and true trope, and I’m a total sucker for it. I thought I hit the jackpot with twin princes. I thought I was going to experience a rich fantasy court setting--Feist is, depending on your social circles, considered one of the granddad’s of fantasy, after all. What I got instead was surprisingly lackluster.
Borric and Erland are highly skilled in sword fighting, languages, and commanding battlefields--their social skills, however, need a lot of work. While their father, Prince Arutha, tries to press on them the severity of their future, Borric and Erland are too busy gambling to pay attention. It’s only when they’re tasked to travel to Kesh that they start to gain an understanding.
The book is set in an established world that begins with what would be called the Riftwar, and Pug, a magician who would become the strongest ever. This particular book takes place after the Riftwar. While it’s a new series, separate from the Riftwar series, I felt I was missing a lot. These are all recurring characters, recurring settings, and a lot of times someone mused on information that long time readers would know; other times names were mentioned without any follow-up, expecting you to already know the severity behind the events.
One scene in particular was really perplexing. I guess it’s a staple in the series that everyone has a “magical love” moment. One look and suddenly you’re completely love drunk. A character that I was enjoying suddenly became a giggling school boy. He was married and the bride brought a convenient deus ex machina with her: telepathic communication. This is only the first deus ex machina.
The second deus ex machina arrives later in the form of Nakor, a traveling monk. This deus ex machina is assigned to Borric, basically to spring him from any and every sticky situation; the other deus ex machina hangs out with Erland to read minds and keep communication between the royal party in a palace of spies. Pretty convenient, if you ask me.
I found I didn’t really care about the plot. I was invested in Borric’s side of the journey, wondering how he would cross so much distance or get into a heavily guarded palace, but I didn’t care about the possibility of assassinations or looming war. There’s not a single point in the beginning or middle of the plot that I could recite; the majority was Erland meeting officials, and that’s about it.
I didn’t really care about the characters. In fact, one of the main characters who was vital throughout the past series is killed off-screen and hardly mentioned again. I can only imagine what a slap that was for that character’s fans. When Borric was thought dead, Erland barely batted an eye. He didn’t grieve, didn’t air his emotions, didn’t go through “fits of rage and grief” as the blurb promises. His other half, the one person he was never far from, is suddenly ripped away and Erland just kind of goes along and says “Hey, if Borric was dead, I’d feel it.”
And if you’re expecting at least one woman in this book to be interesting, think again. Even in Kesh, a matriarchy ruled by a powerful empress, not a single woman jumps off the page. There are plenty to be sure, but they’re no more important than the columns throughout the palace. With her telepathy, Gamina should have been the most interesting woman in the place, but she was your typical 80s damsel.
I will say the descriptions of the world are lovely and rich and draw you in. They’re absolutely wonderful! A part of me wants to think the characters suffered in this book because of the previous series; the reader should know who’s who and their past actions should give you all the info you need about their character. The other part of me believes it was pure laziness. Maybe coasting on the popularity of the Riftwar series at the time, Feist wrote a quick cash grab?
All in all, it was a flat book. Maybe if I had started at the very beginning with Pug I would have enjoyed it more, but as a stand-alone series, there’s not enough original meat to make it a good read.
