In England, ever since the thirteenthcentury, the mounted archers formed a considerable portion of the nationalforces. An army of fifteen hundred complete lances, which represented a totalof six or seven thousand horsemen, required a complement of at least fivethousand mounted archers, who were all skilful marksmen. In the timeof Henry VIII., an English bowman could discharge as many as twelvearrows in a minute, and he would have considered himself disgraced if he hadlet fly a single shaft which failed to kill, wound, or at least strike an enemy. “Bedford Bridge was widened from 27 feet to 54 feet by the Corporation of Bedford acting as Agents of the Minister of Transport by virtue of the Trunk Roads Act 1936.” (Commenced October 1938). • “The original bridge over the River Ouse at this place was of remote antiquity. Its date is not known but there was certainly a bridge of stone before the one built in the early part of the thirteenth century. Of its existence and dimensions many indisputable traces have been found. Upon the demolition of the Castle of Bedford in the year 1224 a larger bridge was formed of the materials, which having fallen into decay was, after the lapse of nearly six hundred years, taken down and replaced with the present structure. Designed and executed by John Wing of Bedford. Caernarfon Castle was built in the late thirteenth century as part of Edward I of England's conquest of Wales. Caernarfon was to become the administrative centre of English rule in North Wales, and so the Edwardian castle was built on an especially grand scale. The crenelated walls are studded with nine principal towers and join onto the main city walls – the circuit of which encloses a little over 10 acres of the town, from which the local Welsh were forbidden to live. The castle, built after the cessation of hostilities, was as much a symbol of English power as it was a practical defensive structure. The future king Edward II, known as Edward of Carnarvon (an Anglicised spelling), is said to have been born in the castle in 1284.
