Ongoing Series - Thai

Honestly, 3 are neck & necking for top position! They are all so good in different ways. But The Sign had me hooting with laughter this week, so it scooped #1.

The Sign (Sat YT) ep 4 of 10 - This show is literally everything (except straight) all at once. All through the second scene, I was laughing. It was legit funny. Billy has great comedic timing. Guess he’s not just a pretty face.

Everyone should be watching this. Sure, it's madness but there is genius in it.

Last Twilight (Fri YT) ep 6 of 12 - Yech. August may be one of GMMTV’s least likable characters ever (and that is saying something). Meanwhile, MOAR language play! They spoiling me!

I think it’s intending to encompass more of the manga series than that one did. Which is good, cause that will get us all the way to The Library Kiss (TM). It's the best kiss in the manga. I also like the sides in this show (better than the JBL version).

My Dear Gangster Oppa (Thurs iQIYI) ep 8fin - What a lovely slightly unhinged little show. Tew, can we talk? Un-ironic suspenders, that takes courage. Also, the revolver was a crazy gun choice.

Final thoughts:

This show is just as ridiculous as its title. About a gaymer who falls in love with one of his in-game teammates, who just happens to be a IRL gangster. A real gangster, the kind that actually kills people regularly. The lead pair is doing their best with a ridiculous story and shoddy script, but I enjoyed it. Although I was grateful it wasn’t very long, what we got was oddly satisfying if, frankly, a little bit silly. Recommended. 8/10

That said, what's important about this BL is not the show, but the production and style. Let me explain... no, too much, let me sum up.

This is a chimera BL. Regarding characters: it has Japan's style otaku + Korea's style gangster + Thailand's style friendship group. It used Thai talent + Korean money (Kakao) & IP (adapted from a manwha) but aired on a Chinese channel globally (iQIYI). I'm delighted by the eclectic insanity of this production and truly doubt that any other genre but BL could ever produce like this. It's like diplomat's BL and it's the great wonder of our age that it happened at all. This BL deserves its place in the history books on production alone, even if that place is only in the footnotes. A remarkable little monster.

For Him (Thurs iQIYI) ep 3 of 10 - The sides are… messy. Using the same actor for the old bf is… odd. But in the end, this show leaves me smiling. Which means, I like it despite myself.

Bake Me Please (Mon Gaga) ep 4 of 6 - It's decent. It’s basically what I wanted Antique Bakery to be when I first watched that way back when (not to mention Bite Me). But there’s been so much BL since then that, for some reason, this is falling flat. I think it’s moving too fast for a Thai series. Although, say what you like, Ohm has to be one of the best soft kissers in the industry. He's just good at mouth tenderness.

Pit Babe (Fri iQIYI) ep 5 of 14 - Because there was more Alan and Jeff and they were more key to the plot I was more into this ep. I do compare it to green smoothie down the pants in the Trash Watch.

Cooking Crush (Sun YT) ep 3 of 12 - Look OffGun are truly great. But I’m just not sure we need them in BL anymore. That said, it’s nice to see Off as "the one with the crush" for a change. Also, this show is only good when OffGun are on screen together, otherwise it kinda, well, sucks.

Night Dream (Sat YT) ep 1 of 6 - Cafe setting featuring a cook and a writer. *Seems awfully familiar.* Except these two are exes and this is a reunion romance. It’s stiff and very pulp but not bad (no crap sound effects) and I am a sucker for a reunion romance. That said, Rookie Thailand is not to be trusted, proceed with caution.

Absolute Zero (Weds iQIYI) ep 12fin - I'm grateful this is over. It was tense but for the wrong reasons - sadness and confusion. This final episode was fine, but that’s because it was mostly them being together + flashbacks. Plus all the familiar actor faces of the grown-up friends (hi, Karn my lovely, still stunning I see). But 2 of 12 episodes is not enough for the 10 of suffering and confusion that came before.

In conclusion:

A man is killed on his 10th anniversary resulting in a time paradox, for which the only solution is him never meeting his childhood sweetheart until later in life. Both lovers cycle back to the past at different ages, so that they each become their own 1st & 2nd great loves, but every time it ends in pain, until each also endures 10 years of separation. Finally it gets fixed, but leaves them with multiple memories of time's failures like temporal PTSD, and everyone around them has chronic deja vu. Me? I got both. This is one of those BLs that is high-quality with great acting but poor story. If you like your BL dwelling, maudlin, and tense due to angst and suffering, then you might enjoy this. But I just regret it, 6/10. Recommended only if you like confusing time travel emo pain.

In which case, just watch Tokyo in April is... instead. Give over Thailand, Japan does it better.

Middleman’s Love (Fri YT & iQIYI ep 6 of 8 - While our main couple isn’t working for me... the side couple isn’t working for me either. I really wanted to give LeoTai a chance, this is the 3rd show I’ve seen them in, and still nope. I like Jade a lot more when he’s sad. He’s a much more pleasant screen experience depressed. I would like him to stay hurt for a couple of eps, just so I can enjoy this show a tiny bit more. But then he just goes unhinged again. Argh. I just don’t like it.

A Christmas (In July) Misunderstanding

Steve doesn’t want to doubt Billy’s trustworthiness. He knows after being flayed, Billy’s changed a lot. He’s even kind of friendly now, a little quieter, a little calmer.

So Steve feels like a jackass when he notices Billy going over to Claudia Henderson’s house every night for a whole week, and he immediately jumps to the worst case scenario.

It’s just that... he heard through the grapevine about what happened with Nancy’s mom, how her parents are getting a divorce and how Ted Wheeler is fighting for custody because of what happened. Steve doesn’t think it was Billy’s fault, not when he heard from Nancy how upset they all were.

When he asks Dustin, and Dustin says he’s sworn to secrecy he starts to worry. Because he really doesn’t want to think of Claudia Henderson that way, and he really doesn’t want to think of Billy that way. They just got to be friendly, and Steve doesn’t... he can’t believe...

Well, he’s a little jealous to tell the truth. Because Robin’s been saying Billy flirts with him, and honestly Steve was starting to feel a little flattered. He wasn’t sure how he felt about it exactly, but Robin seemed to think it was harmless and nice and he’d started looking forward to when Billy would come in to drop off his requisite pile of action and horror movies at the store. Billy’d given Steve his number, and he’d been debating if he might text him. Ask him what he was up to or try to start some kind of conversation. Maybe...

But then he noticed the Camero was often parked outside of Henderson’s place when Steve would drop Dustin off after when Mrs. Henderson was supposedly at her knitting group.

And that’s how Steve found himself waving to Dustin and Claudia on the porch, parking his beemer around the corner, and trying to creep around Mrs. Henderson’s house without getting in front of the big front windows. Tews noticed him, swishing her tail warily, but otherwise, no one seemed to be aware.

“C’mon, it’s starting,” Dustin was parked on the couch with a big bowl of popcorn.

“Hold your horses,” Billy’s voice was startling to hear in the Henderson house, where Steve had frequently had hot cocoa and watched Henderson do homework while they waited for Claudia to come home. Steve had a sick feeling in the pit of his stomach, like he’d had too much dairy.

“I fucked it all up,” Billy practically yelled.

“You didn’t mess it all up,” Mrs Henderson said softly, “Just be patient with yourself.”

Steve crept away from the living room, following the noise to the kitchen. Where Billy Hargrove was covering his face, a pile of snarled dark green yarn sitting in front of him.

“It’s okay,” Mrs Henderson said, undoing some of the yarn with a motherly smile.

“Christ,” Billy put his head down into the pile, “I suck at this.”

“It’s just a practice piece,” Mrs Henderson said.

“Yeah but it was going so well... I thought I might,” Billy looked up at her with a red face, “Give it to someone.”

“We’ll get it fixed,” Mrs. Henderson nodded reassuringly.

“Guys, it’s starting,” Dustin yelled from the other room.

“Come on, we’ll untangle while we watch,” Mrs. Henderson piled the yarn into his arms.

Steve frowned when he thought he heard another woman’s voice from the other room but as he made his way closer to the living room window.

“-allmark’s Christmas in July Summer Movie Marathon. We’re playing twenty brand new movies, as well as all your cozy Christmas favorites around the clock. Next up: A Christmas Misunderstanding,” The voice chirped cheerfully.

“Billy it’s your pick,” Dustin bounced on the couch.

“Okay, Henderson, but I’m trusting you with my bingo card,” Billy frowned at the yarn pile as he flopped down next to Dustin on the couch, “Gotta fix this for St-someone.”

“I like the green,” Dustin reached towards the yarn pile.

Billy just pouted, “Yeah, I did too.”

“Looks like...” Dustin glanced up at Billy’s face, and then he laughed a little, “Nevermind. It’s starting.”

“You want to stay through this one and the next one?” Mrs. Henderson asked Billy.

“Yeah. My dad’s not in the best mood,” Billy shrugged.

She just nodded, “As long as you like, sweetie.”

Steve didn’t much feel like staying and listening to a whole hallmark movie just to prove it to himself. Come to think of it, Lucas had mentioned that Billy was going to knitting to help with his dexterity, because the scars on his hands had messed him up a little.

Steve felt like a world class jerk. Even more so when Billy had come to family video the next day and returned Timecop with a weird look on his face when he looked at Steve. He asked Steve to meet after work, and Steve’s stomach sank. He knew. He didn’t know how he knew but he knew.

He had to just apologize before it got too bad, before Billy pushed him to the ground like so many years ago. Not that Steve didn’t deserve it. He felt like shit, and he didn’t know how to explain that he just had the most suspicious mind ever.

“Hey, pretty boy,” Billy crooned when Steve finally got off, catching and returning Keith’s glare as he shuffled to his car. He sucked on his cigarette hard.

“Hey,” Steve shuffled on his feet, wishing locking up had taken a lot longer so he has something to do with his hands.

“I had a question to ask-”

“I��m sorry,” Steve blurted out.

An expression streaked across Billy’s face, “I didn’t even ask you yet.”

“I’m sorry that I thought you and Mrs. Henderson had something going on. I was so fucking stupid, I just thought... I saw your car, and I’m so fucking sorry.”

Billy’s face was red, “You saw us.”

“Yes, I thought-”

Billy tossed his cigarette to the side, “Mrs. Henderson isn’t like that.”

“I-” Steve choked out.

“I’m not like that anymore,” Billy huffed.

“I know,” Steve muttered.

“Then why,” Billy’s voice rose, and he clenched his hands at his sides, “Would you-”

“I like you,” Steve whispered desperately, “I like you and I got all up in my head because the last time I liked someone like this they liked... someone... else.”

He trailed off when Billy opened his door as if he was preparing to go.

“I’m sorry, I’m really fucking sorry, please-”

Billy cut him off by throwing a pile of knotted green yarn at his face.

Before Steve could even fully figure out what was going in, Billy had his hands in Steve’s lapels, dragging him forward.

“You jealous, Harrington?”

“Yeah,” Steve blinked.

Kissing Billy Hargrove was maybe the third most surprising thing that had happened to Steve in the past 24 hours. The second being that he found out Billy Hargrove secretly liked knitting and watching Hallmark movies, and the first being that Steve had said he liked him, and meant it.

Steve hadn’t been much for Hallmark movies but he swore he could hear the music swell.

Billy kissed him slowly, knee-weakeningly, his soft lips dancing over Steve’s with a hunger that Steve hadn’t imagined. When he pulled back Steve actually whimpered and tried to follow, leaning forward and stumbling into Billy’s space.

“You don’t need to be jealous,” Billy said with a frown, “Don’t be jealous. Don’t...”

Steve fell into another kiss, sliding his hands up to Billy’s jaw to hold him in place.

Turns out the knitting project was for him. Family Video green, though Steve noticed it also worked well as a Christmas scarf.

I have some things to say

First of all, shut the fuck up Wahl. I really wanted Guy to send that text he was typing out before those guys came after him like yes bby confront him. And when Wahl asked Guy if he wanted to go home with him and it was very obvious that Guy did not want to go but he still can't say no to him 😭.

Second of all, Guy and Tew's interaction's this episode had me kicking my feet and squealing fr they were being so cute and the way they communicated and how Guy apologized to Tew for saying what he did was so refreshing to me. Like Guy didn't let Tew walk away without Guy apologizing and that's not something you normally see in a bl or at least not the ones I watch. And Guy fell on him again I'm not sure how but I love it.

Third of all, the difference between the way Wahl and Tom warned Guy about getting too close and trusting Tew too quickly was very different. Wahl was most likely only saying that because he's loosing his puppy. The person who can't say no to him and who follows him around like a puppy. And Wahl doesn't like that he's loosing his control over Guy. Tom telling Guy to be careful was because Guy doesn't know Tew very well and he should be careful and that was the correct way to go about it and I loved to see it.

Fourth of all, (I'm on a roll right now ngl) the scene where Tul was driving Guy home I noticed something

Point #5, I love Tul, he's so cute and they way I'm pretty sure he doesn't realize he's getting flirted with is so funny to me and in the same point he's working hard to open this shabu restaurant for his down bad boss (which is insane) just because to me he just wants to feel normal with Guy and telling Guy that he's in the Mafia doesn't fall in line with that.

And finally the last point, where the fuck did Wahl get that video. Like where did he get it. Also I already mentioned this in a previous post where I was screaming but when he said "or he could've stalked you here" like that's hypocritical. You literally looked at his phone and I'm assuming he waited until he was alone with Tew (because I hate Wahl and I love giving myself more reasons to) to go up to them. And yes I know he's concerned (is he really tho?) but I honestly think he's pushing it like he put all this shit into Guy's head about not trusting Tew and saying he was gonna take him home but then his girlfriend calls and he just like gives up and lets Guy go home by himself. Like what? And then after that Guy gets cornered and it's like ughhh.

All I hope for next episode is that they continue this good communication (besides the not telling Guy about him being in the Mafia but y'know) that they had this episode and that Tew doesn't go back to acting like a big bad Mafia man in front of Guy and that he doesn't scare him.

- Funny how none of Guy's other internet friends are sus in Wahl's eyes. Just the hot guy. Funny.

- Listen I know this ain't about them but the vibe between Pai and Muffin is immaculate. Fluffy femme getting bossed around by a bike dyke and batting her eyes about it? Six seasons and a movie please.

- Even Tom has caught on that Tew likes Guy. They are both so pathetic, I love it.

- Tew got to do a rescue! What a good day for him. And once again Guy isn't content to just swoon about it, he's gotta ask the tough questions like "why did those dudes seem scared of you?" What a good day for me.

- Y'all who said Tul is the best character were so right.

- I would clown on Tew for this but if I'd gotten cornered into telling a giant lie my first instinct would also be "okay how can I adjust my whole life to make this true before anyone finds out"

- Oh my god if the "buy an entire restaurant to look legit for a cute boy" scheme sparks a mob world paranoia spiral I'm going to be SO happy

- Oh my god if this is going to be a problem boyfriend for Tul I'm going to be SO HAPPY

- Kenji is so creepy and gross. Not even in a fun way.

- Okay so I wasn't exactly sure about the nuances of Wahl's departure before, but now it's clear. He stuck by Guy and refused to leave (and rejected a call from Nami? Caller ID wasn't translated) until the rest of the friends showed up and it wasn't just Hot Dude there. Then it's suddenly very important that he go watch Nami's presentation. I hope Nami dumps him.

- Every time Wahl looks perturbed at the idea that he's no longer the center of Guy's universe, an hour is added to my life.

- Okay, there's some poetry in the fact that Tew is wearing this candy-shop polo shirt because he almost got stabbed and then beat a guy half to death.

- I said to a friend this week that even though this show is chock full of tropes, there's an earnest air to them, like they're reinventing the tropes from first principles. This lip wipe is a great example. The foiled attempt coming first makes it feel oddly fresh. So much of why I'm enjoying this show comes down to that kind of detail.

- I guess this Boss kid is the spy sent by Kenji's people? but I can still ship him and Tul.

- IS he the spy? He's being way too weird to be a good one. Whatever, I'm just gonna sit back and enjoy. The way Tul's looking at him is exquisite. Honestly he needs someone bossy and competent to take a little something off his shoulders.

- I'm in love with Tul actually. That is all.

- Mob guys: notoriously can't endure one single day of silence from their beloved without spiraling. Yes this is a Tang Yi callout.

- TEW. TEW MY BESTIE, MY DEAR DUMBASS CHILD. I wasn't gonna say anything about you buying an entire restaurant to cover your identity for your crush, but then you gave him a business card with your apparently very googleable name? SON. You're so dumb. I love you, never change.

I'm glad the mob identity is coming out now, I hope he doesn't somehow manage to cover it up in the cliffhanger continuation. I also hope whatever Boss is there for, he ends up kissing Tul about it.

Whal gives bad friend energy from the very beginning when Guy decribes his life. He explains how he met Whal but that introduction is followed by "I enrolled in the same university and applied for a faculty I have no interest in." Right from the start, Guy is lonely and we see how the friendship makes him feel even more lonely. That decision alone proves it because Guy is friends with someone who doesn't encourage him to be himself and do whatever he wants after school. No, Whal is a friend who is not suggesting but manipulating Guy into doing what he does, so Whal can grow as a person but Guy should stay the same in an environment that makes him unhappy. It's not Whal's first concern if Guy is happy, he wants Guy to become like him. It's like Whal tries to build himself the perfect friend which makes me wonder if this is supposed to be some social commentary.

Later, when Guy wants to confess his feelings and looks for the red whale in his bag, Whal turns his back and ignores him once Nami starts talking. Any person (not rven a friend) would have let Guy finish and then let Nami talk because it's just absolutly rude to not listen. I was very offended in Guy's name while watching.

The scene where Whal shows his worst colors is definelty when he goes through Guy's phone but it's also the night when Guy slept over at Tew's. Guy is a grown man, he can take responsibilty for himself and he does. Instead of letting Guy live his life, Whal calls and says he went looking all over for Guy, making Guy feel guilty about his actions. But, honestly, why is Whal mad Guy didn't pick up his phone when he called him at 4 am? And did he really go out looking for him? I know he says so but I hardly believe he actually did. Until now, he didn't really care that much and I doubt he suddenly did.

Yeah, Whal is a toxic friend and a controlfreak which are harsh words, I know, but his behavior is without any ordinary reason and he is manipulative. He doesn't have any trust in Guy and I wonder where that comes from. It doesn't look like Guy has been unloyal in the past, if anyone, Whal himself was.

this one was difficult because a lot of my ocs have a very big soft side but i think luna is one of the few of them who's actually like. more than 95% soft. mostly because of the fact they're not a mercenary of some sort like most of my cyberpunk ocs LMAO luna is the one who patches everyone up after the gig is done and they're always so gentle with those around them even if they're complete strangers. that's how she met cassidy and by definition the rest of the gang too :^) throughout the entire story she remains a constant in everyone's life and despite all the horrible things that happen, not at any point does luna turn to the mercenary life themself. they have this very strong belief that they can make themself the most useful as a medic and as a friend, not as a fighter or an enemy

this one was very difficult because vatha is in a party with artyom (nuclear artificer), lorelei (chronomancy wizard) and sascha (cthulhu warlock) but i think she (cryogenetics sorcerer) can be considered the smartest because she's got like. Everything. the high wisdom high intelligence high charisma kind of stat combination. they love reading books and learning things about the places they visit and have all this information stored in their memories but at the same time she also knows a LOT about surviving and living on the road, and she's usually the one to handle business with people they help. beacon of knowledge but also very passive in it, they're not someone who would rub it in your face but the party knows that if they need any sort of information, ask vatha LMAO

This makes me sad because what was special for Tew was the fact that Guy wasn't afraid of him. But here he is, afraid. Which clearly is upsetting to Tew.

As soon as Guy opens his eyes, they are drawn to the gun wound scar. The face that Tew gives him then...

And Guy's concern, then confusion. So much emotion in one frame.

Now they are sitting and communicating. Tew tells Guy that he didn't tell him that he was scared that it would put Guy in danger. Which confuses me because not knowing, knowing, is there really a difference in danger level?

Tew starts to explain his past and his joy of playing video game. Then his home life. While not rich, he had a loving father. Who clearly raised him right because he is so well-mannered. Oh no! Cough with blood.

Damn... I was really hoping he would kick their asses, and get home to his dad.

I mean, we knew it was coming, but the fact that he didn't get to say goodbye. Oh damn, that really explains the previous episode where he came to meet Guy to say goodbye before his trip.

Ohhhh, Tew looks scary now.

OH! Who called it?!?!

And then he is shot!!! What!?!? I was not expecting that. Nor was I expecting the next part. I was kind of expecting him to have been forced into killing. Interesting. I wonder if Wish John Lennon was one of these kids???

So while bad boy is a rebel with a cause, he still a rebel. Then he just lays down to die.

I think it's safe to say that home dude was not thinking that day.

I think Guy gets it, but it will be interesting to see if he accepts it. He at least isn't scared of Tew anymore. Butt he more Tew explains, the more clearly you can see he is an anti-hero. Won't go so far as to call him a villain butttttt. He is no hero. Yay!!! This is my favorite type of character!

I am not sure what to think of the mob boss. He is putting a lot of trust into a kid, but he also appears to be giving him the keys to revenge. He is an interesting character to say the least.

The rules seem simple enough. No lying and no betrayal.

"Once you touch a gun. There is no going back to a normal life"

Then, Tew gives a little smirk and says that he doesn't plan on going back to a normal life anyway.

And Guy is seeing this. I think it's interesting because for some reason Tew really expected that Guy would absolutely understand. He is pretty spot on because Guy does understand.

Really Guy... You are going to be butt hurt over the restaurant lie??? I mean, I actually get where Guy is coming from. I'm just thinking it's funny to pick that after hearing Tew's story.

It apparently was not what Tew was expecting Guy to be upset about either. His face says he is completely dumbfounded. Honestly, in my opinion, Guy is latching onto something to use so he can run scared. I don't think he is scared of Tew, but of his own feelings that are happening too fast. I could be completely off base, but that's what I see from how he is acting and reacting.

Boy up in his feels getting sloppy drunk. Other boy is being emo in his bed. What a pair.

Oh, no! Boss man is not okay with the fake restaurant.

i cannotttttt pick only one but ummm in the last yr-ish it's been a rotation of tantai jin/li susu + mingye/sang jiu from cyjm, mingqian from liu yao, xilian from yuwu (🤪)..... bingqiu from sv (always).... i should stop for now that's Tew Many. but i think once i finish spl, changgu will also be up there

15. What is a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

i feel like i'm cursing myself by typing this out but perhaps the bingqiu i posted one chapter of..... even if i could write all the p With p parts that i wanted to include, i was also a little stuck on the ending and idk if i would be able to write it in a way that doesn't feel like a cop out or just weak in general 😢 but i do like that au and i think my writing for it so far was p decent... so who knows...!

16. What are your writing strengths?

i think i am pretty good at dialogue that sounds 1. natural and 2. true to the characters! i try really hard to make imagery sound original(ish) and evocative, and to make a character's Yearning palpable

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

intricate plot, action, sex (takes me forever to write and haven't done it in as much detail as i would like to tbh)

18. Thoughts of writing dialogue in another language in fics?

i love it! i did it a little in my yunfei fic and instead of directly translating the line of chinese right there i just included the meaning in the next line of dialogue, like "what do you mean [thing they just said]" + i did it like that bc the tone of it just felt so much more natural to me in mandarin for that specific convo. not that it was something untranslatable (it wasn't) but it just felt comfier to me. i also like the thing ppl do where you can hover over the text and it will show the translation but idk how that html works HAHA someday i would like to give it a go

20. Favorite fic you have written?

overall i think it would be typhoon season (my incomplete but not abandoned cisswap girls ximang in hk) ! i had it fermenting in my brain for like 8 months before i wrote it, which meant i had figured a lot of the stuff for the beginning out and it was much easier to write than normal since i was not deliberating so much in the moment. i think the pacing for it was good and the reveals of backstory were placed well, and i think i adapted the characters well too even if it's only a first chapter and they haven't done a lot yet. i wanna write them again but it's been rly hard for me to think abt that specific au for many months lol. i also think my recent yzy gegedidi fic had a lot of yummy scenes even if i see some flaws in some parts of the fic's progression... but i spent enough time on it already so i will not go and fix it anymore 😌 peace
