Quick thought about the car scene
Off the back of some thoughts I’ve been having about the long-shots in THOHH 1x06 Two Storms: Anger is at times emphasised by movement. In Two Storms, the circular motion - spinning round and round and round like the Crains are caught in the eye of an emotional storm - pulls us along in the dizzying momentum of the argument. The movement echoes and emphasises a given aspect of the scene; in this case, the thunderous, clashing emotions of the Crain family.  I think this happens elsewhere, too: we get swept along by the argument between Shirley and Theo. In Steve and Hugh’s car scene, the camera is slightly further out, and frames them individually in the centre of the screen as they speak (except when Steve is talking about the family being mentally ill, and getting a vasectomy. Then, the camera holds them both in-frame as below. Interestingly, the camera seems to be outside the car, as lights are reflected on the windows, and streak past obscuring our view - perhaps in reference to Steve’s own ‘obscured view’, his denial).
However, in Theo and Shirley’s car scene, they are both in-frame constantly. The angle flicks back and forth, always one in-focus and one not, and in the background, the unending expanse of trees zooms by in faster and faster increments. It feels blinkered and hyper-focused, the argument reaching crescendo. Great for a jump scare, of course. But I can’t help but think it also kind of emphasises Shirley’s attitude: she’s in control, blinkered to Theo’s explanations, until suddenly she’s forced to slam on the breaks.

The Haunting of Hill House 1x08:
Biiiitch, the tension's building *fast.* I was wondering when they were all gonna be reunited at the house, but I didn't expect it to happen until at least episode 9!
We've had episodes dedicated to each individual character, yet not a single one has been just for Olivia. We've only gotten sprinkles of information here and there, and I still don't think I fully understand who she is or what role she plays in these hauntings. It might just be me, but she seems more "embedded" into the house than Nell is - but I'll get more into that later.
This far into the show, Steven is *still* the most stubborn of them all, refusing to listen to his siblings and father (except for when it has the potential to make him some money.) But seeing his interactions with Hugh - both past and present - is quite staggering. He used to be such a good boy, so close to his family, and always wanting to help his dad and take care of his mom and siblings. In earlier episode discussions, I wrote about how the house didn't seem to have much of an affect on him and his adult life, but this episode revealed some things about him I didn't expect.
Steven was the one sibling I thought had it all - a nice house, a great wife, loaded with money, etc. - but he ended up being the most bitter and sad of them all, because of his refusal to listen and acknowledge anything people have told him. His try hard effort to be the "logical" one has led him to get a vasectomy, out of fear that his kids would "inherit the crazy," which in turn, made him lose his wife. His siblings may be messed up, but at least they seem to have more compassion than he does, and that's usually returned in some form. Whereas Steven seems lonely, with no wife or kids, and secretly dreading interviews with people, as shown in earlier episodes.
His "logical" way of thinking that his family was crazy, turned into resentment. I think the speech he made in the car was interesting. "She was sick in her mind, and the one person that was supposed to take care of her didn't do a goddamn thing to get her help." Projection, much? Nell needed *his* help on the day of her death, but again, the resentment towards his family got in the way of seeing how important they really are to him.
The way this show manages to hide "the crazy" in plain sight is so cool to me. All this time, the tree house, the clock repair man, and potentially the other rooms the kids have been in seem to have been created by the house itself, probably to entice them to stay.
And this episode in particular is starting to tie things back to the beginning. Theo and Shirley experience loud banging at the funeral home, similar to what they experienced as kids; there's a reference to the first episode, "Steven Sees a Ghost," and everyone's headed back to the house to try to rescue a family member.
The Haunting of Hill House isn't a show that features a lot of jump scares to get by as a horror show. So when it finally happens, like Nell screaming to get her sisters to shut up, it's fucking *terrifying.* This is what I was talking about in the beginning, how Olivia seems to be more a part of the house than Nell is. Nell has always felt like the glue trying to hold the family together. Even in death, she's making every possible effort she can to get them to stop fighting. Even in death, she manages to get even her more closed off family members to show vulnerability and open up a little bit.
Theo's speech was so fucking powerful and raw. My god, can you imagine seeing and feeling what she felt? Theo's seen a lot of shit, but the one thing that made her lose sight of what it means to be a living, breathing human was touching Nell. Is that what Nell was feeling before she died, or after? It makes what happened to her even more tragic. That sweet girl, the baby of the family, and *that's* what it is or was like for her. It was so powerful and so overwhelming, it took Theo many tries and many days just to get back to her normal state.
I saw some people comparing what Theo saw - or rather didn't see - with Kevin, to what Nell experienced in an earlier episode. The one with the storm, and Nell screaming as though no one could see her. Why did the house pick her, out of everyone? Why was she "chosen" to take her own life? Was it her innocence that was appealing to these fucked up spirits?
And LUKE! I'm gonna fucking riot if it gets him, too. What is it with Olivia? Why is she the one swallowing them up? I don't understand why she plays such a prominent part of the house. Wouldn't she be protecting them, the way Nell has been? It's worrying that we were introduced to a new ghost this episode, who was described as a psycho by Mrs. Dudley, and she was the one who grabbed Luke in the end.
Honorable mention to, "Did you just punch my boob?" and "Theo's a clenched fist with hair." Out of all the episodes where they could've cracked jokes, they picked the most tense one, lmao. It makes you wonder what'll happen in the final 2 episodes that they needed to do that.

THOHH: Two Storms
Something that I've been meaning to confirm. Does 1x06 Two Storms take place on Halloween? Or just before, at least? Or maybe it’s Eulogy? Shirley is definitely shouting at nonexistent trick-or-treaters at some point.
Something could be inferred about how it is the time of the year when the veil between the afterlife and our own world is thinnest - warping time and space. Something Two Storms does very well with its continuous shots, and physical merging of Hill House and Shirley’s home (think about when Hugh turns that corner by the coffins; Nell being able to speak to Hugh as TBNL; black mold appearing on the Forever House).  Thinking of doing a breakdown of Two Storms, and the importance it has for the themes memory and time.
EDIT: Thanks to @notomys for fact-checking: Kevin takes his kids trick-or-treating in 1x08 Witness Marks, leaving Shirley alone to try and repair the Forever House (and at the mercy of nonexistent trick-or-treaters). This is a continuation of the day of the funeral, 1x07 Eulogy, and is also the same night the Crains will all travel back to Hill House over episodes 8 and 10.  This means 1x06 Two Storms actually took place on the night before Halloween. Still, I like to think the supernatural time of year corresponds to the House's space-time warp. Adds to the spook.
