Sunday Sessions: Jeff Buckley’s Guitar Gear
by JEF STONE 18th Apr 2021
Leave a Commenton Sunday Sessions: Jeff Buckley’s Guitar Gear
In this weeks Sunday Session we look at the late Jeff Buckley's guitar gear.
Jeff Buckley’s Grace album is a tour de force in songwriting and it also features some exceptional guitar playing and recorded guitar tones. In this weeks Sunday Sessions I’m going to go through that gear, and talk about how to grab some of those tones and integrate them into your own rig.
Jeff Buckley
Jeff Buckley’s album Grace is often seen as the perfect debut album by many.
In the early 1990s boutique amplifiers and effects just weren’t a thing. Yet Jeff’s whole album is full of sweet guitar tones and to this day it inspires many guitarists to go seek out those guitar tones.
It features beautiful melodies, amazing song writing and moments of complete abandon on the guitar. What stands out the most for me personally, is the depth of guitar tones on the recordings. With just a small amount of equipment, and none of it particularly fancy, Jeff Buckley created something which still resonates with listeners to this day.
Jeffs Guitars
Most players will be familiar with the 1983 ‘Top Loader’ Fender Telecaster that Jeff wielded as his main guitar, along with a 1976 Gibson Les Paul Custom in the classic black finish, which he was also seen using frequently.
Tumblr media
The Norlin Custom
I suspect that once he had the money, he went out and purchased the Norlin era Gibson ’76 Les Paul Custom. We know its neck was completely broken off at one point, as it was repaired in around July 1995 in Amsterdam. This guitar was featured in an exhibition at the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame And Museum, in Ohio for two years, along with many of his possessions, handwritten lyrics, poems and some clothing.
As far as I am aware the this Les Paul Custom was completely stock with no modifications. These are great guitars and when you find a good one, they are worth holding on to.
Tumblr media
Jeff’s Telecaster
Tumblr media
The borrowed guitar
What is interesting is that this Telecaster was actually borrowed from Janine Nicholls, a director at a local arts institution in New York while Buckley was still playing cafe shows in 1991. This guitar is a Butterscotch 1952 style Telecaster and apart from the bridge which is a top loader and had six individual saddles, rather than three brass barrels, and that hot stacked bridge pickup its a pretty standard Telecaster to look at, just with a chrome mirrored pickguard.
The guitar was returned to its original owner, after Buckley’s tragic death in 1997 and they eventually sold it on auction in 2011, selling for over $50,000.
As we now know Muse frontman Matt Bellamy purchased the guitar in 2020 and he is now the proud owner of this instrument.
Rickenbacker 12-String
On occasion you would also see him with a Rickenbacker 360/12 “Fireglo”. Buckley bought this 12 string Rickenbacker 360 with the money from his first advance after getting signed with Sony. This 12-string was mainly kept in Open G tuning, and live he would use it on the songs ‘Last Goodbye’ and ‘Vancouver’.
Tumblr media
The Flower Guitar
Acoustics
Tumblr media
The Guild F-50 was his main acoustic throughout the recording and touring of Grace, and you’d often the guitar covered in duct tape to help quash feedback issues when he played it live. It’s a guitar that is similar to the twelve string model his estranged father Tim Buckley had used.
Whereas the smaller, warmer sounding Gibson L-1 which Buckley got sometime around 1994, and often used for his finger style playing. Buckley used this guitar on many of his demos and at his smaller shows.
Amplifiers
Amp wise his usual setup was a ’90s Fender Vibroverb ’63 Reissue, and live you would also see him using a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier Trem-o-verb Combo.
Tumblr media
Twin Amps
And in the mid-nineties the Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier Trem-o-verb Combo was seen as the top end of amplifiers by many and so I can see why he used one. In the studio and live he often used these two amps together, with the Fender providing the cleans and the Mesa Boogie handling all his gain tones.
Effects
Tumblr media
Guitar Tunings and chords
Jeff is known to have used Dean Markley Blue Steel strings on his electrics, and I’d assume he played 10s. He used Open G on Last Goodbye, which is D-G-D-G-B-D and Hallelujah is achieved by using a capo at the 5th Fret which gives you  A-D-G-C-E-A.
He also uses a lot of 6th chords, where you use a standard triad (the 1st, 3rd and 5th) with the 6th added. With both major 6th and minor 6th chords featuring frequently in his repertoire.
These 6th chords have a lot more drama in them and so that major 6th has a nice pleasant welcoming warm sound, whereas the minor 6th has a much darker and more haunting sound.
For example Dream Brother uses Bb6 – Cm6 – Dm7 – Ebmaj7 and the song Grace uses Em – F#m6 – G6 – A6.
I’d suggest brushing up on your 6th chords will really help you to cop some of that tension and drama that Jeff always coaxes out of his songs.
Grace Tones
My advice would be when attempting to get some of the tones that Jeff achieved on Grace, don’t be afraid of reverb and letting it create space in your tracks.
Look for a good warm, Fender-style clean tone, and if you are using a modeller or software, look for something which has a Fender Vibroverb or similar, to achieve this. Fender has reissued these amplifier a few times, so you can find them, and I know of a few boutique amp builders that will make you one.
His driven tones are definitely that Mesa Boogie sound and again you can find these within software and modelling. Originals are loud, very loud, so if you re going to hunt one down be prepared for the volume.
The videos below discuss some of his recorded tones and how to achieve the ‘reverb’ sound, which he is famous for. You can certainly still pick up the Alesis Quadraverb models used, but there are also plenty of plugins which emulate them. Something along the lines of the Valhalla Vintage Verb will get you in the ballpark.
I hope this article helps you on your quest for great guitar tones, and if you have the time, pop Grace on your stereo and go immerse yourself the wonderful layers of guitar tones.

Embrace the "atmosphere" of the category so that the brand name resonates with customers immediately
Tumblr media
In fact, these keywords only point to the shallow functional attributes of the category, not the naming context of the category.
I still remember what we talked about before. Naming HE Tuber affects the human brain first, and first affects people’s perceptual intuition, and then the rational brain. Perceptual intuition is like small molecules in the air, constructing the naming context of the category and exuding the "atmosphere" of the category.
The essence of this sense of atmosphere is different cultural contexts, which forms the basis for brand naming in the industry. The background of each category is different, which is not equal to emotional attributes, let alone functional attributes. It is a composite and ever-changing wave of culture.
When naming a brand, it is recommended to scan the naming context of the brand in the category first. Understanding the context and grasping the small elements of the category's language can help the brand establish resonance with customers in the first place. This kind of resonance is subconscious and can invisibly increase trust and security instead of questioning and guessing.
02
Moving on to cafes and cars.
1. Naming context of coffee shop
In the Chinese market, starting with Starbucks, it is basically Western coffee brands that have educated our country’s cafe culture. The transliteration conveys the flavor of the West and resonates with the user's brain waves. As a result, a number of transliterated styles such as Nova, Dior, and Arabica appeared, and later, Manner, Seesaw, and other brands that directly used English.
Another group, such as Algebraist and Man Coffee, gradually focuses on expressing the value pursuit and experience characteristics of coffee shops . The sense of experience and storytelling are also the linguistic atmosphere named after the large catering industry. In this sense, the name Luckin is very unusual. It creates a "popular feeling" that belongs to a Chinese coffee shop. When the coffee shop developed from Starbucks to Luckin, coffee took on the local atmosphere and became as daily as a canteen. Luckin’s brand experience also echoes this positioning. Under the influence of Luckin’s brand, it is expected that more “popular” coffee shops and “popular” coffee shop names will appear.
If you change it to a boutique coffee shop, or another coffee shop with legendary stories and unique experiences, and give it a name like "Luckin", you will lose all its attitude and aura. Last year, Canada's Tim Hortons named Tims Tianhao Coffee, which diluted the brand's Canadian background and unique experience. It couldn't be marketed as a popular song, and the overall impression seemed vague and dull.
2. Naming context of the car
From fuel vehicles to new energy vehicles, from high-end products to transportation tools, from transportation tools to personal expression. It’s hard to say where the next battlefield for the automotive industry will be. After doing more than ten car naming projects, we found that among the many uncertainties in the car context, two senses of language can be sorted out.
The first sense of language is a very ancient naming atmosphere in the automobile industry: sense of performance. Whether it is named in Chinese or English, entry-level or improved, if the name of a car brand can give people the feeling of being agile, sharp, and capable, it can intuitively impress customers. When we comment on car names, many people will like names like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Citroen, while fewer people will mention Volkswagen, Peugeot, and Ford. This is exactly what "sexiness" adds.
You can try to compare "Tesla", "Nio", "Lantu", "Ideal" and "Zhiji".
In the Chinese context, "Tesla" is reminiscent of Godzilla. In addition, the pronunciations of the three characters Te, Si, and La are sharp and confident. The meaningless transliteration of the name makes the brand impression more vivid. imagination.
"NIO" is influenced by the homophony of "future", and it also exudes confidence and technological sharpness; its multi-layered meaning adds a rich sense of imagery to the brand.
"Lantu" reminds people of the beautiful scenery during the driving journey, and brings performance associations of smooth driving experience.
The word "ideal" has no sense of performance and seems relatively plain. Its greater advantage is that it is catchy.
The pronunciation of "Zhiji" is relatively mild. It is a typical case of naming based on corporate ideas. It appeals to what the brand can bring to you, but fails to think from the perspective of customers' expectations and yearnings. It is difficult to say that the name itself has any appeal and commonality. Emotion.
In addition to the sense of performance, another increasingly obvious sense of language is stylization.
Not only automobiles, but also all walks of life are showing this trend. Cars, from being a means of transportation, have gradually become a personal label for people to express themselves. A stylized name will gain the favor of customers more easily than a safe, ordinary name.
If we compare the cars of the past "Geely", "Roewe" and "Vucen" with today's "Jikrypton", "Xpeng" and "Nio", this trend is obvious. In terms of models, more car companies use highly stylized model names and model nicknames, such as Tank, Darth Vader, Ballerina Cat, etc., to immediately create a personalized label. In the past, only mini coopers did this. This is the trend of naming sense, and it is also a reflection of consumer culture and social culture.
03
Next, when we find the naming atmosphere of the category, how to express it in words and convey this atmosphere? ‍‍
Regardless of the category, it is not recommended to mechanically translate the so-called category atmosphere into text symbols and embed them in the name. For example, when naming a car, using words such as energy, speed, and power are not good choices. A more appropriate approach is to focus on the keyword "performance" when creating, develop conceptual paths related to it (speed, power, smoothness, etc.), and then study what words can express these feelings in terms of sound, shape, and meaning. . ‍‍‍‍‍‍
Going back to Tesla, NIO, and Lantu mentioned above, these names do not directly use the word "performance", but they can more or less remind you of a powerful car with a smooth driving experience. car. ‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
Is category atmosphere a rule that must be considered and followed when naming a brand?
Unless your brand intends to subvert or improve the category it belongs to, following the existing category atmosphere of a category will be the first step in building empathy between the brand and consumers. Violating this sense of atmosphere will cause unnecessary resistance to brand communication. ‍‍
Here are two counter-examples: Xiaopeng in the automotive industry and Beauty Jiangnan in the Sichuan cuisine industry.
The name "Xpeng" is not about performance, it just gives people the feeling of a plastic car. Such a name not only fails to add points, but also loses serious points. It needs to rely on model names and propaganda slogans to make up for it.
South Beauty is obviously a Sichuan restaurant, but its name conveys the taste of Jiangsu and Zhejiang cuisine. It makes people who want to eat Sichuan food feel that it is not authentic, and makes people who want to eat Jiangsu and Zhejiang food feel disappointed and leave.
Having said that, let’s answer the three questions raised at the beginning:‍‍
1) Everyone can claim category information, but does it still need to be reflected in the name? Are there any benefits?
needs. It can help customers establish resonance with the category in the first place, thereby leaving trust and recognition and avoiding unnecessary doubts and speculations. ‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
2) The brand name only has such a small space. If it does not reflect the category information, it can create a larger space for differentiated information points. Wouldn’t it be more beneficial to the communication of the brand?
The atmosphere of a category is not mechanically conveyed through a certain word or two words. Ideally, it should be a hidden sense of language. When customers read it, it will be consistent with their expectations for this category. On. ‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
3) If the naming scheme doesn’t sound like it belongs to the category, can it still be considered?
Unless the brand intends to make category innovation, it is not recommended to consider it.
Each subcategory has its own category atmosphere, which will be the first door to open the hearts of customers. When naming, first comprehensively study the naming landscape of this category, then analyze and compare your own brand positioning, and form a naming decision before starting to create.

Best Luxury Brands Are Already Making Millions
Tumblr media
Best The holding on overview for a Birkin sack can broaden years, yet for certain’s motivations
The best principal satchel they need is one they will not at any point get their hands on. The Dematerialised, a British startup that individual supporter Karinna Nobbs calls “the mechanized corporate store of your dreams,” sells just virtual excesses; a business community for dress and embellishments will right anytime exist on the web.
The essential piece brought out, on Dec. 12, 2020, was a silver sweater selling for €121 ($137). Like every piece of her things since, the whole run — 1,212 automated renderings — sold in three hours or less. Nobbs has in a manner worked with the Fabricant, a Dutch virtual couture house where clients make a prohibitive dress for their modernized images on cordial stages including VRChat, a 3D high-level world that took off in omnipresence during the pandemic. The Fabricant composed exertion scored the priciest arrangement at her store as yet: €9,000 for a single garment — or, even more conclusively, a non-piece of clothing.
The Dematerialised deals with the stock model advanced by streetwear, conveying a shoe, pack, or something else in a confined delivery, generally speaking, of something like 150 units. Simply a single brand or PC arranged thing is open at any one time.
Productive buyers get an NFT, or nonfungible token, which is a virtual statement of ownership that unexpected spikes popular for blockchain development. With this proof of realness, an owner can show off a handbag or dress on VRChat, where countless clients collaborate consistently through images — and march their outfits.
Best It could seem,
by all accounts, to be silly, spending however much as could reasonably be expected for excesses you can never contact or hold, yet gamers have long used pieces of clothing to readily spread out their electronic character, likewise as actually. Called “skins,” these outfits or shells are bought by players to change their appearance in an electronic game cautiously. If you’re searching for this type of brand name to build your business long-term. So, you can find lists of Clothing business name ideas. In addition, bosses in the planned business are genuinely seeing the example, especially after Facebook’s rebrand as Meta Platforms Inc. arranged on making a reenacted modernized presence where clients can work together in a truly genuine space. Unexpectedly this specialty practice can get very gigantic. In an October video statement of its plans, Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg ought to have been noticeable using his and his partners’ images to make a pass at pieces of clothing, play a round of cards, pay trained professionals, and, shockingly, go surfing.
He continued to depict how Meta would help creators with making clothing, home style, and additional items that can be passed starting with one phase on then onto the next — day, from Meta’s universe to the game universe of Halo.
Best By picking the name Meta,
the virtual diversion behemoth is hoping to promise some liability regarding the new inestimable arrangement of likely results. “The metaverse” — as the broadening scene of virtual circumstances is known — integrates Roblox, a phase where clients can make games and geologies for others, and Fortnite, the multiplayer battle game that is as of now similarly a social space and concurred with Ferrari. Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games Inc., which makes Fortnite, said in November that the metaverse can transform into a multitrillion-dollar district of the planet’s economy.
“Images will be pretty much as would be expected as profile pictures today, but as opposed to a static picture, they will be living 3D depictions of you, your looks, your signs,” Zuckerberg figured out. “You will have a storeroom of virtual pieces of Boutique brand name ideas for different occasions arranged by different creators and from different applications and experiences.”
The Dematerialised is a first mover in the next edges.
Despite VRChat, the store’s things can in like manner appear in rival blockchain-based universes like Decentraland, Cryptovoxels, and Somnium Space, where the money is undeniably exceptional and individuals “own” bundles of “land” used to store and sell the things. The Decentralized pieces of clothing can’t yet be worn in Roblox or Fortnite. However, if things go how Zuckerberg predicts, modernized excesses will in a little while be an ordinary part of these universes as well. Brands like Gucci, Balenciaga, and Burberry have shipped off things in both (see the last section).
Best All things considered, Why Is Fashion First?
No obsolete industry has embraced the metaverse exceptionally like style. It’s an outrageous separation from quite a while ago when brands snickered at web 1.0. To be sure, even by 2008 — three years after Amazon Prime started — just 33% of the excess associations evaluated by Forrester Research sold items on the web. By then, Prada hardly had a site.
In March 2016,
not sometime before an enormous number of these virtual universes were considered, Kerry Murphy assisted with laying out the Fabricant, one of the key brand accessories at Nobbs’ electronic corporate store. An expert in unique representations for motion pictures and publicizing, he invited on as creative boss Amber Jae Slooten, the vital person to continue from the Amsterdam Fashion Institute with a game plan of every modernized arrangement.
“She had fought her bearing through, to have the choice to not have any genuine things in her portfolio,” Murphy says. “Her motivation came from the Rana Plaza episode in Bangladesh, where the construction collapsed and killed more than 1,100 people managing fast style.” After that, Slooten took a situation against the genuine plan industry.

Rise and Shine, Timothée
Timothée Chalamet, the breakout star of 'Call Me By Your Name', is on the up and up as the next generation's leading man. Read his intimate chat with Frank Ocean and a special extended interview with Xavier Dolan.
Photography: Collier Schorr
Styling: Robbie Spencer
Timothée Chalamet by Frank Ocean
“Elio, Elio, Elio,” hums Timothée Chalamet’s character in Luca Guadagnino’s romantic dreamscape Call Me By Your Name. Over the course of a fleeting yet formative summer in early 1980s Italy, Elio falls in love with an older visiting houseguest, Oliver (Armie Hammer). Based on André Aciman’s beautiful novel of the same name, the film illustrates a narrative of grueling desire and devastating passion. Chalamet also stars in Greta Gerwig’s lauded directorial debut, Lady Bird. As the youngest Oscar nominee for Best Actor in nearly 80 years, Chalamet is redefining the role of the leading man. And, as Frank Ocean finds out, Chalamet isn’t afraid of failure. DEVIN BARRETT
FRANK OCEAN Hello? This Timothée?
TIMOTHÉE CHALAMET Yeah, man. This is so exciting. It is an honor to speak to you, man. I’m such a huge fan. This is going to be a real test to keep my voice level and keep this as normal of a conversation as possible [laughs].
FO You got this. Where are you, man?
TC I’m in L.A. I’m from New York, but I’m here right now for the film, doing the last legs of promotion.
FO I hear you. I’ve been in your hometown the past few weeks. I’m furnishing my apartment here, sticking out the cold and paying my dues to become a New Yorker, at least part time. Do people really call you Timothée all the way?
TC My whole life I was Timmy and then as I got older, it seemed like Timmy was youthing me out, so it’s been Timothée since. I tried Timo and Tim, too. The real pronunciation is Timo-tay, but I can’t ask people to call me that; it just seems really pretentious.
FO That’s cool. Where is that from?
TC My dad is from France, so it’s a French spelling, but it seems like too much of an obligation to ask people to call me that.
FO That’s sweet. Very selfless. Has anyone on the street called you Elio yet?
TC That’s been happening. Though riding the 2 train or taking the M12 bus around the city, that hasn’t changed; I guess people don’t really give a fuck in New York. I actually get more people stopping me for Lady Bird, and going, “Is that the douchebag from Lady Bird?” So that’s awesome. I’ve seen certain actors, or musicians like you, keep a sense of integrity and mystery. That’s ultimately what’s been really awesome about Call Me By Your Name and Lady Bird as an introduction [to me]: I was up for bigger, more commercial projects, but I didn’t get them. They just didn’t choose me, and it’s been gratifying, coming from more of a place of artistry and not just pure exposure.
FO Those films are excellent. I just finished Call Me By Your Name, the novel, yesterday, for more insight before we talked. It’s a really special role and an opportune, appropriate time right now in popular culture. I think it’s also good for you that this is your opening song. It’s such a proper foundation, to do roles like these that have so much heart and vulnerability in the very beginning, completely boutique or small, but on the lips of so many. Congratulations for the work and its effect and how it’s made people feel; it’s tremendous. Tell me about growing up in New York. I’m assuming this is you in high school, the statistics rapper Timmy T.
Tumblr media
TC Oh, fuck. [Laughs.] I can’t believe you saw the statistics video. That’s embarrassing.
FO [Laughs.] I saw it on Ellen. I figured if Ellen’s talking about it, then it’s fair game. Tell me about that time.
TC That’s true. I went to LaGuardia, a performing arts high school. Without being “that guy that enjoyed high school too much,” a trope I don’t want to fall into, it was a really amazing place to go to school. I got to work creatively— I’m an over-exuberant guy and I can go a mile a minute, so having a place to channel that energy was really great.
FO What should I see while I’m in New York? I still just Google “top five places to get pizza.”
TC Mud is one of my favorite coffee shops, and Tompkins Square Bagels makes the best bagels in my opinion. East Village is my favorite neighborhood. Where are the good L.A. spots?
FO The place that I go to as soon as I get off the plane usually is Ohana, this little Hawaiian Korean BBQ spot in a Studio City strip mall. It’s been the same staff for the past 10 years. There are [photos of] struggling actors on the wall in frames and they have the best chicken potstickers, grilled fish, and short ribs in L.A.
TC A year ago, I was in Hell’s Kitchen, [eating] bacon, egg, and cheeses, kicking it at my buddy Will’s—tonight I’m going to the SAG Awards. It’s been a nonstop, weird-ass six months—a lot of fun, but trippy, too.
FO What’s the fit going to be for the SAG Awards?
TC It’s going to be...“Please don’t touch my Raf, please don’t touch my Raf” [laughs].
FO We’re giving Raf [Simons] this evening. I love it.
TC I’m such a fan boy. [Being involved] with fashion has been really fun, just as a fan. I don’t want to work with a stylist or anything. I’ve been following designers like Raf, Haider Ackermann, Hedi Slimane—these guys are like rock stars. They’re artists.
FO Yeah, they’re artists. There’s this really great connection between all these [creative] fields. You’re finding your own creativity and being excited about that; it’s cool. I’ve been into photography for six or seven years. It’s almost like this quiet search for joy. It actually provides me with the same feeling that making a record does: imagining or dreaming about something, and then it being in the real world.
TC “Dreaming a thought that could dream about a thought. / That could think of the dreamer that thought. / That could think of dreaming and getting a glimmer of God.”
FO [Laughs.] Don’t do that. When you’re on set, are you method acting?
TC I try to be super careful. The danger is you can end up focusing more on what’s going on off-camera than on-camera. You don’t want to be entertaining for the sake of being entertaining. The work should be the work. If it resonates, it’s going to resonate, and then people are naturally curious about how you got to that destination. It can’t be about how you’re getting to it.
FO People say you get to do some movies for yourself and others you do for the studio: how do you feel about making movies that aren’t as full to the brim with emotion and real feeling as the last two movies you made? Like, how do you feel about making Transformers?
TC As Kanye put it, Guillermo del Toro made Pacific Rim and that’s one of his favorite movies. His latest movie, The Shape of Water, is amazing. Christopher Nolan is tied with Paul Thomas Anderson [as] my favorite director. If one of those auteurs has a $200 million film and wants me to be a part of it, fuck yeah.
FO It seems like a good change of pace sometimes to do physically demanding films—the space, superhero, aggressive, big-budget action films.
TC Exactly. The project I’m jumping into is exactly that. I’m going to put on 25 pounds—I’m like a skinny little shit right now. Listen, I saw that one of your favorite films is The Master.
FO Yes. Joaquin [Phoenix], man.
TC Dude, that is my favorite actor. There’s five or six artists I’m really trying to follow in the footsteps of creatively. I get the opportunity to be on the phone with one right now [laughs], but on the acting side, Joaquin is number one for me.
FO The time period of 20th Century Women seems close to Call Me By Your Name, that ’80s time period. Did you get into these past eras of fashion and shit when you were doing the film?
TC Absolutely. I’m a total “nostalgist” and Call Me By Your Name’s director, Luca, grew up in that time period. In fact, the book is set in ’88 and he changed it to ’83 because he said that was the year in your life you can hear music from. In the movie, there’s Talking Heads, The Psychedelic Furs, or just the Bach or Beethoven—those are all songs from Luca’s youth, what it was like for him in Italy in the ’80s. Also, in 1988, the AIDS crisis had already hit and that was part of the reasoning for making [the film] a little bit earlier too, so it wasn’t as intense, and could be a little more utopic. What a tragedy for movies now that if you want to be contemporary, phones have to be involved, with texting and FaceTime. I don’t know if [the characters in] Call Me By Your Name would ever have that relationship if there was passive-aggressive commenting and “likes.” They actually had to talk, figure each other out, and struggle with their emotions.
FO And they had to wait to talk. You couldn’t just talk instantly, which I think is sometimes good for the conversation. I want to talk to you too [about] learning languages, in Call Me By Your Name. Can things be expressed or even felt differently, because of the language?
TC When I act in French, it’s really shocking to me how it feels more grounding than acting in English. I grew up speaking French with my dad, but it’s not a language I have as much command over, so when I speak or act in French, the words mean so much to me; I’m so focused. So much of Call Me By Your Name is silent and plays out physically; there’s kind of a push and pull. Acting in Italian, I’m really winging it: memorizing how lines sound phonetically, just trying to get the intonations and mannerisms right, so the lines ring true to Italian audiences.
FO When you were speaking Italian, was there somebody on set to call you out if it felt fake?
TC We had someone on set that could correct me. Same for [playing] the piano and guitar. I did a movie called Beautiful Boy this year that involved a lot of drug sequences, and that also felt very important to get right. I had a consultant on set for that.
FO You had a consultant for the drugs?
TC Exactly. It felt like a big responsibility to get that right. The movie is about addiction, and to get the actual using wrong would betray anyone’s experiences walking that path. It was very helpful.
FC I could see how it would be. You have the opportunity to learn all these things—seems like the best profession in the world for the curious spirit and mind.
TC I was in college for a little bit and it felt like a clear decision to not [finish]; it was scary because I didn’t want to rob myself of growing as a human. But it’s been the exact opposite: going from set to set, working with creative, open people, having mentors rooting for you. There’s education within that, I guess.
FO That [Call Me By Your Name] soundtrack is super good.
TC We listened to Sufjan Stevens [included on the soundtrack] with Luca and Armie [Hammer] right before we started shooting—that was an experience, to listen to that and, like, hold each other after. It’s awesome to hear you say that about the soundtrack. You’ve got to score a movie.
FO Yeah, one of these days. How many hours of piano went into it?
TC I had an Italian teacher, Roberto Solci, who had a painting of himself composing above his piano. He was absolutely brilliant and instinctual. I played a little bit of piano, but nothing like it was in the book or the movie. I worked with Roberto every day in a small apartment below Luca’s villa, and formed a really special relationship with [Solci].
FO Which school of thought are you in: that what you do is kind of in you, like a gift, this thing you’re really good at? Or, do you feel like whatever you decided to do and really believed in, you would’ve been good at?
TC I think I have to go with the first. I had this feeling I couldn’t not act and yet to get there I really needed teachers, and one teacher in particular, to make me comfortable with failing. To be bad and get over it—that opened the floodgates. I did a play in New York when I was 15, after this really difficult but ultimately helpful sophomore year in high school; that’s when it kind of took off for me. I’m also really passionate about music. I want to pursue other things creatively, not so much music, but definitely writing and directing. I’m going to be very, very patient about that. The dream as an actor is to be economically self-sustainable and what this year has been is beyond that now. I’m getting a creative license of sorts.
FO Cool. Well, I’m going to sign off. Best of luck tonight.
TC Thank you so much for this. It’s been such an experience, sharing personal thoughts about artistry and acting with someone that’s influenced me in many ways. This means the world to me.

Timothée Chalamet by Xavier Dolan
The artistry of filmmaking has always preoccupied Timothée Chalamet. Fittingly, the quality of the craft is more than apparent in his first major leading role, Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me By Your Name. To prepare for being on set, Chalamet has long immersed himself in complex cinema— movies like critically-acclaimed Canadian filmmaker Xavier Dolan’s I Killed My Mother. Here, Chalamet and Dolan meet up in Paris to discuss Chalamet’s creative sights for the future, his relationship with Armie Hammer, and the realities of love and pain. LISA MISCHIANTI
XAVIER DOLAN I don’t know where to start!
TIMOTHÉE CHALAMET [Laughs.] Well, thank you for doing this. It is not lost on me how lucky I am to have you opposite me doing this.
XD Of course, the pleasure is mine! When I saw Call Me By Your Name—my introduction to you—I had this sort of unconscious, although I guess quite voluntary, need to become close to you and befriend you, and Armie, and Luca. For that, I am a dangerous person who should be locked up!
TC [Laughs.]
XD But seriously, leaving the film, I had the feeling I knew you. Although I guess that’s what movies are trying to achieve: To connect us, strangers, and make us feel that we know the characters we’re presented.
TC Absolutely. I’ve been the biggest fan of your work for years. You direct films that make really strong, clear choices…the moment, in Mommy, when the actor opens up the aspect ratio—wait, I don’t want to ruin it!
XD Oh, everybody has spoiled that already. Thank you, you’re very sweet. Hearing you discuss film, clearly you’re very curious and cultured, and not an actor for any random reason. You talk about film in a vocabulary that, at your age, I wouldn’t been able to understand or use myself. So, what kind of artist are you? What are you looking for in your experiences with directors?
TC I look for a certain feeling, and I wouldn’t know how to describe it, but I know I’m always chasing it. I don’t quite know what it is that I’m after. I always like to think that the art doesn’t take place on screen, but in the audience member’s head. At a certain point I was able to come to grips with the idea to just “be.” That’s why I’m so impressed with Mommy or I Killed My Mother or Heartbeats, because you’re doing an incredible job just “being,” which is all I’m focused on while working. But you’re also weaving and keeping the story synchronized.
XD I hate the concept of a “generation”—we’re all different individuals…But do you feel that you belong to a generation of artists, and if you do, are there friends your age who share that same curiosity in the craftsmanship and fabrication of a film, rather than just people who dream of being wrapped in time to party after work?
TC Absolutely. Actors my age that I know have an understanding of how you can be shooting the most ecstasy-filled love scene of a movie at 5 AM on day six of the week. But I agree with you, generational definition doesn’t relate to film—such an old art form is kind of stringent. What’s really awesome about having a conversation like this with you at 22 years old as opposed to 19 or 20 is that I feel my understanding of what I like, my vocabulary, is more developed now. Luca is one of my favorite filmmakers—I hope to work with him again, and he has, in many ways, gifted me a career—yet, the Bertolucci passion of cinema that he has simply isn’t mine. I love those movies, but it’s not what made me want to act; it’s not something that feels intrinsic to me. So now at 22, when somebody asks me, Who are your favorite directors? Who do you aspire to work with? What do you like as a viewer? I can immediately point to filmmakers that work within my cultural vocabulary and my experience as a young person, like the Safdie brothers, because Heaven Knows What and Good Time are movies that feel so tonally new and refreshing.
XD What do you look for in a film? Is it the vision, the emotion, the uniqueness?
TC My favorite movie is James White by Josh Mond, and it’s a testament to the filmmaking that I couldn’t tell where the filmmaking was, anywhere. It felt like watching a man’s journey. Josh has his finger on what it is to be alive now. You keep seeing stories told with similar tropes, and that, as a viewer, is what’s scariest to me. I’m not worried about being bad in anything, because I know I’ll be bad in things, and that’s fine. But what scares me is the idea of being boring, and being part of stories I feel too familiar with, or being cynical for the sake of being cynical.
XD I’m curious to hear about Armie and you. It’s a very intimate story, and the whole movie revolves around the central piece of your relationship.
TC I wish everybody could hang out with Armie, because the nature of our relationship, the way it blossomed when we first met, was so conducive to what it is in the movie and so helpful. I was younger, way more inexperienced, and I knew seconds after meeting Armie that I was in the best hands. He’s an instinctual caretaker, which is so helpful to his incredible performance in the film: his character wants to succumb to his love and desire for another human being, but also doesn’t want to hurt him. It’s best epitomized in this scene where I’m sleeping in bed towards the end of the film, right before it cuts to the farewell scene at the train station. Oliver sits on the bed next to Elio and you see about 6,000 emotions go across Armie’s face: love, empathy, regret, and fear. There’s so much Armie in that moment; so much love there. We were also in Luca’s hands—this movie really is Luca’s baby, and any success it’s found is principally thanks to him. There was something truer to this experience than in any other movie I’ve been in. It felt like, hey, we gotta be into the director, but we gotta be into each other…
XD And you were.
TC We were! It was the setting, it was the town—culturally, if we wanted reference points it was with one another. There was the pressure that we had to do justice to the book, to André Aciman, to the book’s fans, yet there was this beautiful feeling where there wasn’t pressure because it was something really popular, or because there was an actor in it that sells a certain number of tickets. There was this idea that if this is gonna be good, it’s gonna be good because [it is good]. What excites me most as an artist is flow. That’s harder when the idea of show business or Hollywood is present. Flow here maybe was Italy, or preparing for a month and a half, or shooting on film and with one lens, but there was flow!
XD Was there a desire on Luca’s end for you to absorb the spirit of that space of creation?
TC Yes, which is Luca’s genius. Europeans know how to waste time better than Americans do! If we had shot the film the day I stepped off the plane from New York, it would’ve been manic and maybe half as long, because we would have been running through all the beats, instead of being there for a month and a half, and being in tune with a vision and experience of Europe.
XD How has your relationship with Luca evolved now that you have not only shot the film but also traveled with it to so many places, and it’s been so celebrated?
TC I’m figuring out adulthood as I’m figuring out these relationships. I had an excellent, intimate relationship with Luca through the process, and we were always in each other’s ears, but it wasn’t what it is now. It’s certainly nothing close to being peers, but I just get him more now. The amazing thing about Luca is that there are so many layers there. He’s really a blueprint for me, in terms of what I look for in a director.
XD Do you think this film will mold your tastes and make you more fastidious in choosing future projects?
TC It seems like a gift from the universe to be working on very artistic projects at a young age, so I’ll be very careful with what I’m doing next. But I understand how difficult it’ll be to replicate the experience [I had]. With Luca, we were shooting in his town, sitting in his screening room, watching movies he loves and knows a lot about. Luca has worked with his editor, producing partners, camera people, costume designer, and make up artists for 25 years. So you’re stepping into a system. It’s almost like the Warhol factory. That’ll be difficult to find and match.
XD You’ve said that Call Me By Your Name is a celebration of love and that it isn’t cynical. But do you feel that it is equally, and perhaps even more, about pain? I have a feeling that the most beautiful things in this film, the moments of pure bliss and simple loving and tenderness, are building up, inescapably, to that scene between you and Michael Stuhlbarg. People say how mature this film is, and I wonder if “mature” is just a word we use to talk about a movie that open-heartedly talks about pain, and celebrates it as well.
TC I don’t disagree that it’s perhaps more about pain—or equally about pain—than it is about love. Pain, after all, is mostly what Michael’s monologue is about. During that scene, I had a little voice at the back of my head saying, Hear this. Fucking hear this. When you’re suffering, or grieving, the only thing you can control or protect yourself from is the added layer of shame, beating yourself up over heartbreak, or forbidding yourself the pain. But there is no right way to grieve or to suffer. If it ever was about pain—the pain that relates to heartbreak or love—it’s about how to deal with it.

So I saw your Talia/Marisol relationship canons but what about Jen/Priya (both glamorous/goofy girls)
Tumblr media
I hc for jen that she didn’t care for priya on the show and was team Lottie and when they meet face to face for the first time jen tries to erase the fact that she even stated this
Priya keeps it classy sharing a keke with her but once the night is over she makes sure that she lets Jen know that she knows what was said about her
Before jen can address this, Priya is striding away into the night with her waves bouncing with each step
Jen is in awe and waits to address priya in her dms (after stalking her page to see if she posts anything about her or anything that might seem shady—Priya doesn’t)
Priya doesn’t answer right away or even reads it since according to her story, she’s pretty busy trying to find the right fabrics for her new collection?
When she DOES answer, jen is pacing around the house before she finally opens the response from priya
“let’s have a chat in person so that we’re better understood, that alright with you, love?”
And it is totally alright with jen! She even goes a little bit further on putting her number out there so they can connect outside of the media which is a little odd since the both of them love to use their platforms
They meet up, keep it cute. Sheepish smiles from Jen soon turn genuine once she loosens up and priya assures her that she’s not here to start shit
They explain what it was like for each other during their seasons and try to understand them
Priya doesn’t like the dwell on it much...she’s in a much better place
Jen keeps a blog so she knows how to talk and she’s been one of the main ones pretty open discussing the seasons whereas priya wants to move on from it
“There’s actually more to this life than what reality tv tries to make you, don’t you wonder?”
“Don’t I know it!”
The air is soon cleared and jen sees that her perception of priya was out of immaturity
She’s usually the first in the beginning to initiate conversations with priya getting back to her in due time
It is of no matter to jen until they are actually friends then priya engages more with jen
The age difference plays a bit into their slow friendship turned relationship
It’s all about growth for the both of them yet it does seem to jen that priya seems to be more put together than she is which bothers her most days but she continues to cover that up with a smile
It is when jen is most vulnerable learning that tim is having a baby with someone else that she kisses priya
To priya is came out of nowhere but quickly pieces that jen is clearly upset over something
jen feels silly discussing especially since she showed romantic feelings for this woman she admires?
Priya assures her it’s not a big deal asking her if she wants to talk about it but jen tells her that she’d rather just go to bed
She expects priya to leave her room but priya gets cozy in her bed, which sets some panic in jen’s chest as she stumbles to her attached bathroom to calm herself tf down
she’s sharing a bed with PRIYA
Sure they might have fallen asleep together a few times...okay it was once but this was a full body thing??
The way her heart was hammering in her chest was enough to make the hurt of Tim moving on with someone else go away...at least for now
Jen was getting angry with herself still thinking about that relationship, she deserved to move on too!
“Are you sure this is what you want and not just using me to get back at tim?” Priya asks uncertain one night at a fashion show she invited Jen to.
Priya’s been taking her time at finding love now and tired of just temporary love, can jen be that? Is she willing to try?
“I’ve never been so sure about anything in my entire life,” Jen says staring up into Priya’s eyes
Height difference is a thing for them, heels or no heels doesn’t matter
Jen LOVES Priya’s curves and is just in awe of all of the woman that she is!
And priya loves hugging Jen from behind, she’s a tiny thing
Anyways, It’s a classic first real kiss in the snow (I originally thought cliche rain but hey it could be a rainy foggy snow day whatever sets the vibe yk)
They decide to take things very slow, building a relationship that works for the both of them almost like they’re still in the friend stage yet they get to make out
“What? You don’t make out with your friends?” Priya winks
Jen snorts when she finds something really funny and priya thinks it’s adorable even if jen hates it priya tries to make her love it
Fans have been speculating that priya and jen are more than just friends due to their stories but priya likes to keep the element of surprise whereas jen just wants to scream it from the top of her lungs
It takes some time for their parents to adjust to this since jen’s family focuses on image (her dad cracks first ofc) and for priya is more cultural and the ignorance of “how are you going to have kids, you’re not getting any younger?”
Priya can’t stand criticism so being classic priya she dives further into her work of fashion and as jen gets older she’s trying not to let the values of her parents control her life
She can’t fully do that until she moves out
So she moves in with priya, who asks her to..which is a big step
She has her own guest room but almost always ends up staying in priya’s room
Jen loves getting lost in priya’s closets! especially when she leaves for days at a time to purchase new pieces for her boutique
“Have you seen my—
“Don’t you mean ours?”
Not only does priya love her fashion but her perfume collection maybe the most important to her
Jen loves mixing scents together and loves the way priya smells, anything she wears she wears it well
She’ll mix her fragrances with her own to feel closer to her
Jen will always have something freshly baked for priya just when she comes home
Jen works from home a lot while priya always seems to be on the run, sometimes it’s lonely
Jen is the one to accidentally reveal that they’re dating but priya feels like jen didn’t want to keep teasing the people any longer really
Priya knows how much jen loves the jetsons and has a designer design something judy’s style for jen’s birthday
Jen’s a sobbing mess and giggling mess, “how thoughtful, babe!”
They take turns tending to each other’s skincare needs and hair needs
“There’s this new product—
“Buy it!”
“Do you need anymore, never mind what am I saying? I know you do so I’m getting it okay bye.”
Priya’s strides become a common thing for jen to post no matter what state she’s in, priya will strut
Priya posts jen posing in her clothes a lot along with the both of them telling corny jokes to get a reaction out of each other
Fans are 50/50 with their relationship, most find them cute as can be and unexpected always waiting for the next new post (which isn’t always the best) and the 50 feels like it’s all for clout however many priya stans don’t know what priya needs to gain from the relationship...
This causes drama!!!
“We need to separate from the media and continue focusing on us, love.”
“How when you’re never here?”Jen mutters, “maybe I should just go back to my parents.”
“And let them win?”
“Well maybe they’re right.”
“I can’t believe you.”
Their first big fight is so memorable and priya is the one reaching out so that they can talk about this but jen isn’t ready
This is what she does pull away when things aren’t going right. She sits back and reflects or doesn’t? Until she comes to a decision that feels right, she always lets her mouth/head decide for her
I personally never thought of them as a concept but they could be fun minus the underlying issues striking from their fight

It’s 2018 and there are literally hundreds & thousands *maybe*, of VST synth plugins in the market. Some are free, some are expensive and some cost very little.
Diva is a classic analogue synth takes the best bits of hardware history and puts them into one incredible-sounding plugin. It’s also the type of synth to reach for to make big rave music anthems. With Diva, you could pair a Minimoog oscillator with an MS-20 filter, and then pipe the signal through a Jupiter-6 style envelope, or swap out any. The easiest way to backup and share your files with everyone. TRAKTOR 3.3 has arrived, delivering incredible new performance and compatibility for DJs. The new version can now be used with TRAKTOR SCRATCH, giving you hands-on control of all four virtual decks via turntables and CD players.

Not every VST synth is made equal. On some synths, you may find big and usable sounds, right on the get-go. And on some other synths, you could get sound that sounds too amateurish until you spend time tweaking and inserting effects into it.
We could have attempted to write a list of the top 100 best free & paid VST plugins in the world today, but I really wanted to focus on the real best 5 must-have software VST synths, that should consider installing in your setup – as a music producer, whether you produce electronic music or hip-hop music.
Let’s get started.
The 5 Best Software VST Synths To Install Today
Check out this video, where Tim Cant (a really hilarious producer) shows us insights into the five of probably the most popular software synths in the world today. He’ll explain the five synths below, shows a quick walkthrough of each and explains what made them popular.
1. SynthMaster 2.9 (KV331 Audio)
SynthMaster, an award-winning synth may have been around for a long time, but every update has kept it fresh for the competition with the world’s best soft synths.
Now at version 2.9, SynthMaster has practically every sound generation feature you could want in a synthesizer: wavetable oscillators, loads of voicing parameters, dual filters, multistage envelope generators and a modular signal flow – all times two with two synthesis layers. On top of that, there’s also four LFOs, an effects section including a Vocoder, and loads more.

SynthMaster’s Killer Feature? It’s oscillator waveforms include samples of classic hardware to use as sources.
Its seen to be used by DJs like Armin van Buuren, Martin Garrix and Zedd.

2. Spire (Reveal Sound)
The Spire does not come cheap. (Almost the price of a DAW!).
But it brings an impressive range of oscillators and synthesis types, and an even more impressive range of third-party preset developers. Spire is an extensive VST plugin as it allows for complicated modulation options while sounding extremely big.
Choose one of 49 waves in a Spire oscillator, and you can morph it using the CtrlA and CtrlB knobs. What these two do to the waveform is determined by the synthesis type, which is selected at the top of the oscillator. And that’s without mentioning the dual filters, the four LFOs, the four envelopes and effects.
Spire’s Killer Feature? It’s five-page modulation matrix, giving access to over 200 mod destinations. Reveal Sound, the maker of Spire also claims that the plugin is used by artists such as Dash Berlin and Hardwell.
A quick thing you should know about Spire is that it uses quite a bit of CPU processing and in our opinion, we think that could be improved – perhaps in its upcoming version updates.

3. Avenger by Vengeance Sound
You probably have heard its sounds in lots of music pieces on the radio. This monstrous, top-of-the-line synth is the first instrument released by plugin and sound household legends, Vengeance Sound.
It has eight oscillators, which host classic analogue shapes, samples, a choice of digital wave cycles and wavetables. ThThere areM and AM options, and each oscillator can be run through a unique combination of filters, amps, arpeggiators and effects, meaning that you could make an entire track in one instance of Avenger.
Elsewhere, there’s a spectral filter, macro controls, and far too many features to even namecheck.
Avenger’s Killer Feature? It’s got an entire drum machine – and drum sequencer – built in! Put simply, Avenger is excessive and would fit the tweak-hungry music producer.

4. Diva (u-he)
Synths made by u-he (like Zebra synth), never fail to disappoint. Diva is a classic analogue synth takes the best bits of hardware history and puts them into one incredible-sounding plugin. It’s also the type of synth to reach for to make big rave music anthems.
With Diva, you could pair a Minimoog oscillator with an MS-20 filter, and then pipe the signal through a Jupiter-6 style envelope, or swap out any of the elements for any other. Diva’s also got two LFOs, two effects slots, a Modifications tab to make advanced tweaks, and a kickass oscilloscope visualiser.
Diva’s Killer Feature? Divine Mode – this menu control cranks Diva up to maximum quality, making it its most analogue, but with a hefty CPU hit. You could use it if you have enough CPU power under the hood of your computer.
U-he’s Diva is no stranger to the world of music production and has been around since late 2011.

5. Serum (Xfer Records)

My personal favourite to the list of synths here. Serum is a modern looking wavetable VST synth, that has become a staple to many electronic music producers. Out of the box, the presets itself sounds super big and usable. You’ll enjoy using them in your tracks and will only look at tweaking them, to create your own unique sounds.
Serum’s two wavetable oscillators are actually superweapons, with 3D wave morphing, additive synthesis, wavetable interpolation, wave cycle morphing, and loads more complicated-sounding powers. But the trick is, in reality, every one of Serum’s features is completely straightforward to use, and there are countless third-party preset packs available that showcase its incredible potential.
Serum’s three Killer Features? It’s got up to eight multipoint LFOs, PNG Wavetable import, and everyone with Serum gets a copy of Serum FX, an effects-only version with only Serum’s FX tab.
Native Instrument’s Massive is something of an alternative to Serum, but having experienced them first-hand, I’ll be first to tell you that you’ll find it easier to program on Serum compared to Massive.

What are your takes on the 5 VST soft synths that I featured here in this post? Let me know and contribute some of your thoughts to the other readers!
