TNG 6x20 The Chase and 7x15 Lower Decks thoughts (rewatching, so possible future spoilers for DS9 too)
I’ve temporarily paused my DS9 re-watch after 2x20 Maquis Part 1 to go through all the Cardassian episodes in TNG to get a better picture of the build up: 4x12, 5x03, 6x10, 6x11, 6x20 and 7x15.
6x20 The Chase
Admittedly, I skipped the first half of this because as I skimmed through the plot on Memory Alpha, there was no mention of Cardassians until later on XD
Lady Captain Cardassian! I feel like they're pretty rare, it's sas I'm so excited by this
Tfw there's a looong pause... and you're watching it on 1.5x speed. Just how long was that pause in normal time?!
Living for the Klingon-Cardassian banter
Data just THRASHING that Klingon. I love him so much
The Klingon is so INTO Data - this is flirting, right?
"You are attempting to bribe me." "Not at all." "You suggested a plan that would work to your advantage, one that I would be capable of executing. You then implied a reward. Clearly you were."
I think Nu'Daq might be my new favourite one-off character
Cardassian treachery! Gotta love it
Federation smarts! Gotta love it XD
"I will go with you" but imma be salty about it
Just wondering why I hadn't seen Miles about since season 4, then realised that, of course, he's on DS9 XD Doh!
Romulans from nowhere :o
I do like the plan to answer the long-standing why-is-everyone-humanoid question
>> Thinking about the word humanoid the other day, do you think the other species hear their own word through the UT? Kingonoid and Romuloid or so forth.
Haha they disagree, so much for coming together in fellowship and companionship
Romulan ending <3 "Perhaps, one day." "One day."
7x15 Lower Decks
Deanna and Riker are just nice
Love the Vulcan
Bajor mention!
Very professional, waiter, to spill the beans lilke that!
I do love this episode, and seeing the command from the outside
I hope their friendship isn't ruined by promotion. They seem very sweet
Having said that, I suddenly have a horrible feeling Sita dies in this episode
Beverly is so lovely
Lost. Puppy. What?
Awwwwwkward. "They both get a lot of snow." Love how Riker just seems amused.
Yeah, this episode is great, only getting to see what one of the lower decks see
Did he also think Wesley should have been expelled?
I love this Vulcan. And I love Geordie, but his frustration with Taurik is pretty amusing
I'm a fan of this poker juxtaposition scene - interesting that they've broken away from just the lower decks characters.
Hah, okay, Lavelle does annoy Riker
Lol "You and Lavelle are a lot alike." "What? We're not at all alike." "You're bluffing."
I really love this Ben guy. Inclusion of a civilian just being friends with whoever is super cute
Okay, Worf is actually being pretty good here? I find myself liking him in this episode.
Ohhhh "I wanted to make sure that you got a fair chance to redeem yourself", that makes far more sense - no wonder I felt he was a little out of character in the first scene with her, he was acting.
"I didn't realise she would be so young."
The feels. She's so excited and proud and knowing what happens... it hurts.
Oh, the promotion. I'm tearing up. This episode is making me FEEL
Ben, you are great. Nice job moving Worf.
Amazing how this episode is so moving when you barely know the characters. I loved the premise, and I love the execution of it. (Though damn you for killing off Sito.)
Again, we see a helpful Cardassian, but get the overall impression Cardassia is still a threat.

LOWER DECKS EPISODE OF VOYAGER!!!!! janeway takes her emo teenager, her anxious baby and her depressed preteen out for a walk, ends up getting chased by mosquitoes. love it
so obviously I love lower deckers, the everyman experience aboard trek ships is utterly irresistible to me, but on voyager that is increased x10000 because none of them can leave, transfer or be promoted much. by s6 they've all survived the borg, the vidiians, the hirogen, etc, and they ALL have ptsd. that's made evident in this episode with the gang of telfer, celes and harren, even if it's not explicitly stated - each of them has built up a pathology about surviving on voyager for so long.
it was so cute seeing janeway with her 'lost sheep'. they have so much potential!! meaning in true voyager fashion we will never see them again. rip. yall were awesome

[tv review] tng 6x19-20 (1993)
6x19 “lessons”
i have been sleeping on season 6 of tng. there are so many stone cold classics this season. i mean, this episode believably has captain picard falling head-over-heels for someone and very carefully scaling back some of his boundaries in the process to see if he can maintain this kind of relationship. he also does just absolutely everything right in the process, being fully transparent with the members of his command crew and his new beloved.
ultimately it isn’t any unavoidable conflict of interest that leads to them being unable to maintain this relationship, nor do they just fridge her which a lot of worse shows would absolutely do in this situation. instead, when her life is in jeopardy and she bravely does her duty, picard finds himself absolutely shutting down at the thought of losing her.
this is such a mature take on this kind of situation, and i’m just floored by all the things this episode does right that a lot of other shows, hell this show would do wrong given a different combination of circumstances.
this is truly great television. s-rank
6x20 “the chase”
and then this one is just silly & fun.
captain picard gets to play archeologist, the enterprise gets to unravel a mystery that’s older than the human race, and we finally find out why all of the aliens in the galaxy look roughly the same.
yeah, it’s pretty silly, but i enjoyed it a heck of a lot. a-rank

TNG Guide: Picard/Crusher Edition
Someone did a guide like this for Elliot and Olivia from Law and Order and I’ve been thinking about these two lately so here we are.
This guide is obviously coloured by my personal opinion and some of the things are really subtle, but there’s also way less to get through here than something like SVU.
Of course, there are still many good episodes of TNG that don’t revolve around Picard and Crusher, but for the purposes of this guide, I tried to stick to the important ones or ones with some good interactions. Also, feel free to suggest things I may be missing.
SEASON 1
1x01/02 - Encounter at Farpoint
1x03 - The Naked Now
1x05 - The Last Outpost
1x07 - Lonely Among Us (This is on here for one scene really)
1x09 - The Battle (This one doesn’t really have moments between them as much but it’s got some good Picard backstory)
1x12 - The Big Goodbye
1x19 - Coming of Age (Again, mostly here for one scene where Beverly is being interviewed)
1x21 - The Arsenal of Freedom
1x24 - We’ll Always Have Paris
Due to a conflict between Gates McFadden and a writer on the show, Beverly doesn’t appear in season 2. It is said she took the position to head Starfleet Medical on Earth. However, due to a huge fan campaign led by Patrick Stewart himself, Gates came back in season 3 and stayed for the rest of the series.
I’d suggest watching 2x17 - Samaritan Snare as it gives some really good Picard backstory, but for P/C purposes, that’s the only one that’s necessary.
Season 3
3x01 - Evolution
3x05 - The Bonding (No moments here exactly, but the themes present are super important to their relationship)
3x12 - The High Ground
3x18 - Allegiance
3x23 - Sarek (This is here for the mind meld scene, which I think speaks to their relationship, but is also one of the best scenes in the entirety of Star Trek)
3x26 - The Best of Both Worlds Part I (This is mostly here for a specific brief scene, but the events of this episode really affect Picard so it’s important)
Season 4
4x01 - The Best of Both Worlds Part II (Here for continuity purposes)
4x02 - Family (No specific scenes but the storylines here are very much important)
4x05 - Remember Me
4x09 - Final Mission
4x20 - Qpid
4x21 - The Drumhead (This is here specifically because of the trial scene where Jonathan Frakes made some really interesting directorial choices)
4x23 - The Host
Season 5
5x12 - Violations (Massive warning for what is essentially mind rape in this episode)
5x18 - Cause and Effect
5x19 - The First Duty
5x21 - The Perfect Mate
5x25 - The Inner Light
Season 6
6x10/11 - Chain of Command, Part II & II (Massive warning for psychological and physical torture)
6x15 - Tapestry (Mostly here for Picard backstory purposes)
6x19 - Lessons
6x20 - The Chase (This is specifically here for the last scene where again Jonathan Frakes makes some interesting directorial decisions)
6x22 - Suspicions
6x25 - Timescape (This is here for a specific interaction between Deanna and Picard)
6x26 - Descent Part I
Season 7
7x01 - Descent Part II
7x08 - Attached (If you are only going to watch one episode about these two, this is the one to watch)
7x14 - Sub Rosa (This episode is atrociously bad but there’s still some good PC content here)
7x22 - Bloodlines
7x25/26 - All Good Things…

I have somehow never seen “The Chase” (TNG 6x20) and I am crying actual, physical tears????
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This may seem cheesy to a viewer in 2022 but....I don’t think you guys understand how salient this was in the 1990s. It was revolutionary. The Human Genome Project had not yet been completed. There were (sadly, still are) people who believed that different races of the human species had fundamentally different (and, if people of color, “inferior”) genetic compositions. This was used to “justify” genocide throughout, among other times, the twentieth century.  It’s an attitude tragically, callously paralleled by both the Cardassian Gul and Klingon Captain present.
That all bipedal eukaryotic organisms could derive from the master plan of unification wrought by a single root species is profoundly subversive and implicitly compassionate and accepting.
See this, this right here, is why I love Star Trek.

Star Trek Voyager: Good Shepherd (6x20)
Comments: Janeway orders three misfit crew members to join her aboard an away mission where they encounter a hostile force that isn't Janeway.
This was a mashup of TNG: Hollow Pursuits and TNG: Lower Decks, where the story focuses on three awkward, lower ranked crew members improving themselves and becoming better people. Only, this is Voyager so there’s no real character development:
The theorist douche nozzle kills an alien, does dumb shit that puts everyone at risk, and then continues to be a douche nozzle. The Bajoran girl sucks at her job, admits to sucking at her job, and then continues to suck at her job. The hypochondriac is infected by an alien, then recovers, and stops being a hypochondriac (which, admittedly, is kiiinda an arc).
To set this plot in action, Janeway laments to, uh, Tuvok (or Chakotay, I can’t remember), that she’s allowed three members of her crew to “fall through the cracks.” But, that shouldn’t be an issue aboard Voyager with its tiny crew and zero turnover rate. Or, at least, no net inflow of crew. She churns out fresh corpses every week, but there’s no one taking their places.
This type of story would make better sense on TNG (where it was already done in Hollow Pursuits) or on DS9 where Sisko could be forgiven for not knowing the name of some random ensign who just came aboard.
Nice in premise, poor in execution... By now you know the drill.
My enjoyment: 2/5

Season 6 Primer
my stupid fcking computer kept crashing while i was writing this,it was like it was protesting the idea that there are only TWO MORE SEASONS LEFT AAHHHHHHHHH
@wellntruly I can’t believe that I only have one more season primer to write and damn @memory-for-trifles I felt your pain in trying to figure out what to bold for MUST SEE on this list, I just wanted to do all of them!!! so instead I switched it up a little and just bolded the ones that were NECESSARY for plot development (...and then I cheated by italicizing the ones I just really liked)
6x01- 6x06 This is a SIX PARTER, because DS9 goes fucking HARD CORE sometimes. It's not even the longest multi-parter, just wait till next season. anyways, our darling crew are separated, some desperately trying to organize an internal resistance (again, for poor Kira under her second occupation) and some battling out amongst the stars. Things are very dark, but there is always hope, by which I mean hilarity - especially in the form of your favorite Le Carre character
6x01 everyone tries to figure out the new normal in life at war with the Dominion
6x02 lots of soldier vs officer feels (WARNING: there is a suicide)
6x03 all about the relationship between parents and children, starring Worf/Alexander and Dukat/Ziyal
6x04 female changeling appears to try to seduce Odo to the dark side (quark misses Deep Space Drink as much as we do)
6x05 both sides begin to try to take back DS9, from the inside and out, in the first part of a mini-two parter WITHIN the six-parter (jeez Deep Space Serialization)
6x06 THE FINAL BATTLE!!!
6x07 WEDDING EPISODE, WEDDING EPISODE, WEDDING EPISODE!!! featuring all your tropey favorites (terrible mother-in-law, bridezilla, bachelor party shenanigans etc) but with with SPACE TWISTS. I honestly love this episode SO MUCH, what a wonderful return to Deep Space Domesticity after so long at war
6x08 MIRROR VERSE! although it's a bit of a switcheroo because this is mostly Mirror verse characters coming into OUR world rather than the other way around. It's very relationship heavy, about Bareil and Kira, and is pretty skippable but also Mirror verse Kira is in it and I ADORE her
6x09 an episode based entirely around Bashir's enhancements, and the idea of 'what happened to the other kids who got enhancements, but weren't able to hide it like he did?' There's some interesting stuff here about disability, mental illness, and the way society treats the neurodiverse
6x10 a fun adventure episode in which the Ferengi go on a mission to be big damn heroes, and maybe make a little latinum in the process (fun story: Iggy Pop is in this episode!)
6x11 Sisko and Dukat get ship wrecked, Lost style (so the answer to your question 'is this lost' will FINALLY be yes) Dukat goes crazy just as fast as you'd expect in this AMAZING episode that manages to keep up tons of tension while basically just being two people talking for an hour
6x12 just like Morn manages to be a recurring character without ever actually saying a word this episode manages to be ALL ABOUT HIM while not having him in it pretty much at all. it's a fun little romp that explores how even background characters have their own lives going on while we're focusing on the main cast
6x13 I think this might be the most critically acclaimed star trek episode like... ever? it was definitely up for 3 emmys and is most of the casts's favorite episode. IT'S JUST REALLY THAT GOOD. It's sci-fi and Star Trek at it's best. It makes me cry every time, and is still painfully important today with it's struggle between desperation and hope regarding civil rights. Super notable for this episode basically saying that sometimes you just need to say FUCK METAPHORS and scream about how horrible racism is without pretending it’s about aliens. Also the only time in ST history an actor has directed an episode where he was the central character, since they wanted to have a black director and Avery wanted this episode
6x14 Honey I Shrunk The Runabout! it’s a fun little episode with plenty of Bashir/O’Brien banter
6x15 O'Brien goes UNDERCOVER and things GO SOUTH in this grungy gangster AU. there is one really funny scene back on DS9 that is literally just that the station is falling apart without O'Brien's magic touch in another case of B-plot being way better than A-plot - it's only one scene, so just watch that and get out
6x16 Dax and Worf are Adorable, shade is thrown at TNG, and hilarious zingers are thrown about as they tramp through a jungle before things abruptly get Very Very Serious. it's pretty much pure Relationship episode so I loved it
6x17 Kira gets to meet her mother when she time-travels back to the Occupation in another episode of the ongoing saga Kira Searches For Truth No Matter How Painful And Enraging in this incredible and incredibly intense episode
6x18 a switch up, in that BASHIR Must Suffer, as he's accused of being a Dominion spy, not just a James Bond spy. Really intense and spirals quickly into some very dark places
6x19 the road to hell is paved with good intentions in another one of DS9's most famous and intense episodes, revolving around Sisko and Garak as Sisko asks himself what he's willing to do to protect the Alpha Quadrant.
6x20 A space rom-com featuring cupid as a 1960's lounge singer who's perfectly aware he's a holoprogram pally. Who better than an AI to teach Odo how to stop being such a square and get down with the cool cats? you finally get an episode that’s just ALL ABOUT THIS STATION’S LARPING
6x21 holy shit, quite literally, as Bajor's gods decide it's time for THE END OF DAYS. The Reckoning is at hand on DS9!
6x22 a Nog-centric episode where he and Jake end up stranded in a war zone with a bunch of wild-eyed cadets
6x23 considered the worst episode of DS9, it features Quark getting a temporary sex change. there's some nuggets of good stuff, especially the feminist movement, and Shimmerman does his best with a terrible script, but on the whole this was definitely one long cringe of an episode
6x24 Molly gets accidentally transported to the age of dinosaurs, only a few hours pass for us but 10 years go by for her. the rest of the episode is the O'Briens trying to come to terms with their new feral daughter and reintegrate her into society in a really weird, dark Tarzan-ish episode. The B-plot is a lovely bit of Jadzia-Worf relationship as they babysit Kirayoshi, if you skip this episode then at least watch that part
6x25 this is basically DS9 therapy hour, and it’s GREAT (what do you mean I’m biased as a therapist-in-training and that this isn’t actually plot necessary? SH-SHUT UP, YOU’RE BIASED! IT’S MY PRIMER I DO WHAT I WANT!! IT’S NECESSARY TO MY HEART)
6x26 this seriously feels like the darkest, saddest DS9 season finale EVER, so like... BRING TISSUES. NO, MORE TISSUES THAN THAT. NO, MORE.

TNG 6x10 and 6x11 Chain of Command, Part 1 & 2 thoughts (rewatching, so possible future spoilers for DS9 too)
I’ve temporarily paused my DS9 re-watch after 2x20 Maquis Part 1 to go through all the Cardassian episodes in TNG to get a better picture of the build up: 4x12, 5x03, 6x10, 6x11, 6x20 and 7x15.
6x10 Part One
Watching Jellico on 1.5x speed makes him even more aggressively brusque
I can't remember if Jellico's genuinely good at his job or if he's very, very bad
The trouble is, he wants people to work for him. Picard has people work with him.
Once again, I had kind of forgotten till I re-watched just how much I liked Picard
(I just looked up what the Ferengi was called to make my next comment, and genuinely hadn't caught on that he was Solok, who they were looking for! I was wondering why he was so dedicated to calling Solok extraordinary XD)
(Huh, another fun fact - Solok was supposed to be Quark, but DS9 was a few weeks too late in airing for there to be a crossover!)
Daimon Solok kind of looks like Pel?
I don't mind woman using their charm, and that ear stroke wasn't egregious as some... but still, I hate ear stroking ferengi to get your way with them
I cannot tell if Jellicoe is an idiot or very clever
"If the Cardassian Union truly wishes to discuss peace, they can send someone who can negotiate in a civilised manner." Fuck OFF, you're hardly being civilised!!!
Ok, so there was some strategy...
"Well, I'll say this for him. He's sure of himself." "No, he's not." Oh fuck, that's concerning
IT'S A TRAP
That gul looks far too pleased with himself
Action scenes are VERY silly on 1.5x speed XD
Ohhh the next one will be the torture episode right? 😬😬😬
6x11 Part Two
Oh gosh, I was not expecting him to divulge information like Beverly's involvement straight away!
Any action Picard took should be said to be his own, not on behalf of the Federation - Isn't that the defence you should be using?
Yes, it's nice Will's worried about his captain, but tbf the Federation shouldn't withdraw from the sector for Picard. He knew the risks.
Data in red is so damn weird
Madred's child just casually being there is so chilling. Jesus.
Cardassian history is interesting, once being a peaceful people with a rich spiritual life before the military took over
They've discovered the plan!
I don't trust this "you can go" routine
Ohhhh
Oh no
That is the way to torture him. Mention Beverly
Picard walking back to the chair is so similar to Sisko walking back the box in Paradise
Jeeez, the breaking of the egg next to Picard bald head sure is kind of visceral
"Ah! You called me Picard."... "You are six years old. Weak and helpless. You cannot hurt me." What a king!
Crew sticking up for crew :) Geordie pushing for Riker to pilot the mission. :3
This exchange though - go go go Riker!
>>Jellico: "Let's drop the ranks for a moment. I don't like you. I think you're insubordinate, arrogant, wilful, and I don't think you're a particularly good first officer. But you are also the best pilot on the ship.
>>Riker: "Well, now that the ranks are dropped, Captain, I don't like you, either. You are arrogant and closed-minded. You need to control everything and everyone. You don't provide an atmosphere of trust, and you don't inspire these people to go out of their way for you. You've get everybody wound up so tight there's no joy in anything. I don't think you're a particularly good Captain."
"Do I wanna know how close that was?" "No." XD
Ohhhhhh. Oh Picard. Oh, you poor poor thing. He's going to say five isn't he?
JUST IN TIME gosh it's weird being grateful for Cardassians
"There are four lights!". You hero.
"Welcome home, Jean-Luc... Just the way you left it, maybe a little better." Oh, fuck off already Jellico. Though thank you for being involved in Picard's rescue, I guess.
Immediately meeting with Troi, yes, good idea, you definitely need counselling
Oh, Picard <3
These are good episodes. Jellico is infuriating and it's harrowing to watch Picard, but it's a damn good story.
