Duet December 2023 Issue ft. Ikeda Masashi Mini Interview (translation below)
Publication: November 7, 2023
Where Passion Resides -Passion for life as an actor-
"The theme this time is "Passion." What made Masashi Ikeda-kun, a multitalented athlete and musician, decide to pursue a career in acting? We asked him to share the passionate feelings he holds inside."
Ikeda: My family loved movies and dramas, so we would rent various genres from the video rental store, such as war documentaries, period dramas, and foreign films, and lived a life where they were always playing in the background. As I was surrounded by movies and dramas, I naturally began to admire the actors who lived in the film world.
However, I couldn't find the courage to pursue my dream….At first, I was just going to find employment. When I was in my third year of college, I was scouted by A-PLUS, the agency I work for now.
I thought again, "How do I want to live my life?" and asked my parents about it. At that time, they told me, "Do whatever you like," so I decided to become an actor, saying, "I only have one life, so I want to take on the challenge!"
I'm grateful to my agency for giving me a chance when I was ready to start job hunting, and to my family for kindly watching over me as I pursued the path I wanted to take. I want to go all the way so that the choice I made that day won't be a mistake.
My first role was as a medical student in episode 10 of Sunday Theater's "TOKYO MER: Mobile Emergency Room"
The tight schedule from morning to late at night made me realize how difficult the profession of being an actor is.
Even in the fast paced and tense environment, the actors, such as Suzuki Ryohei-san and Kaku Kento-san, who played the main roles, performed confidently. Furthermore, I was amazed at how cool and dazzling they looked during the long filming hours, never showing any signs of fatigue and always smiling.
Since I only know about completed productions, I've seen the hard work that goes on behind the scenes, and my fighting spirit is burning to work even harder in my acting career. My main goal now is to play the lead in a drama or movie.
However, since I'm still inexperienced, I'd like to explore new sides of actor Ikeda Masashi by working in various genres, such as comedy and suspense, which I've never tried before.
I live by the motto, "If I'm going to do something, I'll go all the way!" I'll enjoy even the difficult parts, and will continue to do my best from now on!
-Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger- Insider Info
While there were many serious scenes, episode 36 was a silly episode, so there was lots of adlibbing and was fun to film. There's a scene where Jeramie, who I play, manipulates Yanma to dance, and Watanabe Aoto-kun who plays him said to me, "The Director said, I don't care what kind of dancing you do. So, do you have any ideas?" I requested for him to perform the "Awa Odori" dance from my hometown of Tokushima (laughs). I'd like you to see his brave performance in response to my absurd request. I feel bad about making only Aoto-kun dance, so if there's an opportunity, I'll also perform the Awa Odori dance somewhere! (laughs).

What's Up?! Some Life Updates!
Tumblr media
My grandparents and relatives recently visited Manila, so I came home to Marikina from the province. It was a fun three weeks with them. We also had two family reunions (one from my grandfather’s side and one from my grandmother’s)  while they were here. My brother and I always assisted our grandparents during their stay here. I’m also grateful for my relatives and the wonderful time we shared. We all cried at the airport when they left.
Tumblr media
After my grandparents’ short vacation, I gathered all my documents for my application for the JET Programme (Assistant Language Teacher/ALT) of the Japanese Embassy here in Manila. They offer this program annually. So, if you’re interested in spreading Japanese culture and want to teach in Japan, I recommend applying for this program.
Tumblr media
I also took JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) N4 last Dec 3rd. I was nervous yet calm the whole time while answering the exam. I had already taken N5 and N4 before, so I knew what to expect. I was silently screaming when it was the reading comprehension test. I think that’s my weakness among the three tests. The first test was grammar, the second was reading comprehension, and the third was listening. I believe my strongest part was the listening section. The results will be out by February. I’m nervous about the result but I’ll accept it if I fail since I wasn’t prepared enough.
Tumblr media
Macken also visited Manila last November, so I finally took the chance to meet him! I got his photobook “Up The Road” and “Rurouni Kenshin: Final” Blu-ray signed! He smiled at me when I said, “Thank you.” I felt weak on my knees and smiled like an idiot afterward! Haha I also attended his first-ever fanmeeting in Manila. We all saw he’s more relaxed here than at the Manila Pop Culture Convention. Denise Laurel was such a good host! I hope organizers will hire her for future Japanese fanmeetings. She was so good and pretty! We also had the hi-bye session, and it was literally just a hi-bye! I shouted, “I love Haruma too,” but I don’t think he heard me. Huhu To see his smile up close was to die for!
Tumblr media
I also watched two Japanese movies in our local cinemas. The first was “TOKYO MER: Mobile Emergency Room” and “My Happy Marriage” (As Long As We Both Shall Live). I was silently screaming for Kaku Kento everytime he appeared on the screen. I was cheering for him! I also silently cheered for Meme and Mio in “My Happy Marriage.” I was crying the whole time since the movie deeply moved me. I first saw them together in “Trillion Game,” their characters here were very different from that drama. Great job, Meme and Mio!
Tumblr media
Overall, I’m enjoying my life again now since I’m already back here in Metro Manila. I can meet my friends and attend events again.

Tokyo MER
Every now and then I come across a medical drama that I need to rant about, and almost invariably the ratings are very high. I’ll get to why in a sec.
First thing’s first: this is the (presumed fictional) efforts to set up a “mobile Emergency Room”, which is basically a large trailer that appears to have a fully decked out operating theatre. This means the team can operate and stabilise people quickly on the scene, then for the ambulance to deliver them to hospitals for admission.
Now, I’m still learning about the Japanese medical system but there are features of the Japanese system that makes this MER concept appealing. Japanese hospitals/emergency departments have the right to refuse acceptance of patients. This can sometimes lead to delayed treatment and poor outcomes. This was particularly an issue at the start of the pandemic when ambulances allegedly drove around Tokyo for an hour before a hospital would accept a suspected Covid patient. Having an MER would mean patients get stabilised before the mess of trying to hunt down an admitting hospital.
The production value is very high. The pace is quick, the lead actors are known for solid acting, and they’ve clearly put a lot of effort into the set and scenes.
What is wrong with it is that it takes the angle of glorifying self-sacrifice in medics. If there’s anything that’s come out of the pandemic, it’s that healthcare workers DO NOT appreciate being equated to “soldiers” or “heroes” or “martyrs”. This narrative is often driven by politicians when terrible government policies create situations where there is inadequate staffing, insufficient training and improper or lack of equipment. The idea that healthcare workers should place themselves at risk to save patients is harmful and also blame-shifting so that attention is turned away from shitty political decisions. Unfortunately it’s this sort of suspenseful altruistic heroism that appeals to audiences and gets the views.
Risk-taking heroic acts - particularly in this guy’s case of rushing into a building filled with explosive gas when the rescue team deemed it was far too dangerous - should NOT be behaviours to be condoned, whether in first responders or in medics. And when you have a highly volatile environment, the last thing you want is someone who refuses to listen to instructions and just rushes in and does his own thing. Team work is vital in these situations, and while you might be good at rapidly triaging injuries, the first response team needs to assess the integrity of the environment and make sure no one gets killed trying to go in there.
I do NOT recommend this jdrama because the rhetoric that the right thing to do is to place yourself in danger is in direct contradiction to what every person gets taught in Basic Life Support - First Check For Danger. But the production quality is very high and I suspect it will continue to rate well above average for the rest of the season, much to my annoyance.

Good morning I just wanted to ask have real cpr videos please don't mean bad??
Hi, I'm unfortunately not exactly sure what you're asking for. I don't have any "real" cpr videos/gifs since I only enjoy whump when it's fictional. But if you want more CPR scenes in asian dramas, here are a few :
Flower of Evil : Episode 5 (Gif Set)
TOKYO MER Mobile Emergency Room : Episode 8 (Gif Set)
The First Responder : Episode 7 (Gif Set)
While you were sleeping : Episode 10
Confession : Episode 6
He is psychometric : Episode 16
Deep in my heart : Episode 22
Descendant of the sun : Episode 14
I'm sure there are more but these are the one that comes to my mind right now. Sorry if that didn't answer your question.
