absolutely no hate but i do think people who drive auto need to know that putting the car in park does not apply any brake, it's using this thing called a parking pawl which locks the output shaft of the transmission. it's why when you put the car in park, it'll kind of rock and then click once the pawl slips into the gear. and yeah it's fairly strong and for most autos not parked on a hill, it'll be fine. BUT it's common practice at least in nz to use your handbrake when parking for like. several reasons that apply regardless of where you live.
1. habit building. if you don't regularly use your handbrake when parking normally the chances of you remembering to do it when you're actually on an incline is fairly low + i do not trust my own ability to correctly judge an incline.
2. less pressure on the parking pawl. replacing your brake pads is fairly common and cheap per axle vs needing to fix your parking pawl/transmission. also, if your parking pawl does give out and you're on an even slight incline, there's nothing to stop your car rolling away + if you're not the kind of person to use your handbrake you're also likely not the kind of person to have angled your wheels into the curb in the case of a runaway vehicle.
it's also region specific, not auto/manual specific, to call it an e-brake: everyone i know here in aotearoa calls it a handbrake despite 90% of cars here being auto transmission.

1939 Sarolea 38H | Belgium 🇧🇪
Announced in 1936 by the Belgian Ministry of Defense competition to develop a heavy army motorcycle designed for communications, supply and fire support caused a stir among local motorcycle companies.
The Sarolea designers opted for sidevalve engine, which is not picky about gasoline quality and has good traction at low rpm, which is important for the army vehicle. The 974 ccm engine provides 20 hp rating required for an extremely heavy (545 kg!) machine. The engine is made short-stroke (88x80 mm), to reduce at least a little its overall width. The ignition system is from magneto.
The real technical masterpiece is motorcycle's transmission. To the engine is docked three-speed gearbox with reverse gear and rocker switch mechanism of automobile type. The transmission to the rear wheel is a cardan shaft. The rear axle has a two-stage demultiplier, with a special linkage switch. Sidecar wheel drive can be turned off, but equipped with a differential it can be used on hard ground.
As a result of army tests, Sarolea received an order to produce only 300 Model 38H motorcycles.

Maintenance notes
March 2023
372,000km
The transmission developed a leak about 20,000km ago. Fast leak when idling. Outer seal replaced (visually failed) but this was not the fix. It was decided the transmission would need to be dropped and split in the hopes it was a failed input shaft seal. I decided while we had it all apart, it was time to upgrade the clutch and flywheel.
Spoon street style clutch disc, clutch cover, release bearing, slave hose and 4.5kg (9lb) ultra lightweight flywheel were chosen.
The input shaft seal was visually destroyed so it was replaced as were bearings and a damaged 5th gear slider. The rear main was also found to have a small leak so the seal and plate were replaced.

Today has definitely been a ...... day.
(My brain is too fried to think of a good adjective)
First, the amount of work that had built up over the 3-day weekend was more than enough to prove that I literally need an assistant. Especially since I was not able to get everything done today, even though it was required to get it done today. Except, the higher ups will never ever approve to have anyone help me with my job.
After the hell day at work, I get in my car to come home. I start the engine and shift in to gear.... then shift in to gear..... shift in to gear.... why the fuck won't you shift in to gear dammit!!!!
I remembered that just a couple weeks ago, Ford issued a press release about a recall that covers my vehicle. A recall that I have been planning to schedule service for as soon as I receive the official notice directly from Ford.
It seems the bushing on the linkage that connects the cable from the shifter to the transmission has been known to fail recently. Since I had seen the news story and done some google searching on my own not too long ago, I knew what to look for. Luckily, the component is on the outside of the transmission and easily reachable under the hood. So I was able to at least temporarily get it hooked back on in order to drive home.
The downside of this recall (other than my current problem) is, as I found out when I got home, that dealerships have not received the necessary parts in order to conduct any of the repairs yet.
The good thing, is that there are repair kits for this exact issue available on Amazon for only $20 AND it only takes about 15 minutes to fix myself. It's apparently extremely easy. Just need to make sure the remnants of the old bushing are cleared away, pop the new one into the end of linkage cable, then snap that down on to shaft of the shifter component on the transmission. YouTube videos can be very helpful!
The other bad thing, is that the earliest I can get delivery of this part is Thursday, most likely in the afternoon. Which means, I will need to spend the next couple days checking under the hood to see if I need to rig things again in order to drive to and from work.
Even when things are easy, they're not always easy!
