You guys discussing Project G and Genesis reminded me of when I started researching Genesis’ history with Deepground and the horror of Deepground itself….and fuck.
Shinra obviously arranged the whole place, but I am positive Hojo was the one running it, because you can see the signs of his type of influence everywhere and it’s utterly terrifying.
For instance, don’t look too deeply into literally everything about Weiss or you’ll start to see some extremely eerie parallels to Sephiroth, particularly insane Sephiroth. From his specific design and weaponry, to his hatred of humanity, to his violent relationship with authority, to Hojo specifically controlling him…and…well, he was the first and the best of all Deepground’s soldiers, wasn’t he.
I swear, Hojo has been trying to recreate and control Sephiroth for so long. Weiss had to have been another one of his brainchildren.
Hell, maybe Hojo tried to create a better Vincent with Nero too.
Then there are the Tsviets like Rosso and Shelke, who were so fucked up by the experimentation and brutal soldier training they went through that they either turned into sadists or were stunted in some way that specifically related to childhood. All of them have Hojo’s exact style of horror all over them when you really break them down and analyze their stories and personalities. You can just see his handiwork.
And when I put this together, I began to strongly suspect that this was all more evidence, all more implication of what happened with Sephiroth. He was the strongest soldier ever created. The strongest in humanity. Nothing could parallel him, and with his strength he survived everything that Hojo threw at him—the same type of brutality that broke the psyches of the Deepground soldiers.
Sephiroth was simply too powerful. Until Nibelheim and until he literally could not take it anymore. He has all of the key traits of the broken-minded Tsviets combined, and his post-insanity agenda went beyond any of theirs. He didn’t decide to hunt only certain humans like Weiss or just be a sadist killer like Rosso—he wanted to erase mankind from existence all together and hated them with every shred of his strength.
I am sure Deepground and all of those key plot-points in Dirge were unique, but also absolutely meant to explain the catastrophe we see at the beginning that is meteor and why the person that summoned it did what he did. Dirge does this a lot, also by having more backstory for Lucrecia and Vincent as well, also showing Hojo’s sadism at its worst…I think it’s why Hojo was the ultimate villain.
Dirge only vaguely addresses Sephiroth directly, but so much of its story revolves around him with this unspoken dread and tragedy.
The game asks you, “Ok, you beat Sephiroth…but was he ever the true villain behind everything? Or did it go deeper than that…”
That very question leads us straight to Hojo. No coincidence.
Hojo pretty much has his hand in everything. In every story except for Advent Children, he's pretty much the catalyst for so much trauma. I admire his commitment. The fucker.
But yeah, it wouldn't surprise me if all of Deepground and the Tsviets was Hojo's doing. It's totally his style.

Final Fantasy VII OC: Orel the Golden
Orel
Other Names: Orel the Golden (オレル・の・きんいろ Kin No Oreru), Orel Eveque, Yellow-0123, Sun
Age: 13
Affiliation: Deepground; Shinra Electric Power Company
Occupation: Member of the Tsviets (Lower Colors)
Appearance: Orel is a teenage boy with long golden-blond hair, which he kept in a ponytail, and golden eyes. He has a thin and slender build, allowing him to be very flexible. He wears a modified version of the Deepground uniform, which appears to be a sleeveless leotard with leggings. It has golden mako attachments with a star on the center of his leotard.
Weapon: Bow and Arrow, Spear (infused with mako, giving it a golden glow)
Abilities: Orel has an enhanced body due to mako, resulting in superhuman speed, strength, reflexes, stamina, and durability. He is talented in using a bow and arrow with the bow turning into a spear. He primarily uses fire materia to fight. His fighting style resembles of a gymnast.
Personality: Orel is a perverted, sadomasochistic, and bloodlust teenage boy. He has a libertine mindset due to his brutal Deepground upbringing. Due to him only feeling pain, he has masochistic tendencies. He also enjoys annoying and provoking others. Like his older sister, Mauve, he believes that those who live in sin should have successful lives and those who live in virtue should be miserable.
Origins: Orel is a member of the Lower Colored Tsviets and the younger brother of Mauve. He, along with Mauve, was raised in Sector 4, Midgar by their mother. When he was a few months old and Mauve was three, both of them were taken to Deepground when their mother died, along with losing their names. It remains unknown why they were taken to there. This is where they were experimented on and forced into brutal and rigorous training. During this time, both of the siblings were being groomed by a scientist, who taught them about “libertinism” in order to get them to be more accepting of the moral depravity of Deepground and to take advantage of them when they are older. As they grow and get better, they are promoted to be a part of the Tsviets. This is where Orel got his current name and was able to act out their brutality on the soldiers. He tends to annoy some of the soldiers into attacking him, including some of the Tsviets and scientists. Orel has a crush on Yuffie but was immensely disappointed that she was assigned to Weiss. He also got annoyed with Sonon’s kindness and protectiveness over Yuffie, thinking that he is cobbling her and not letting her grow. Recently, he has been training in espionage since he is considered to be more stable than his sister. Like the other Lower Colored Tsviets, Orel would be locked in a cell whenever he was not in training.

Personal thoughts on the Tsviets at the moment?
A really neat idea in a crappy game. I actually say they're probably one of Dirge's few redeeming factors. I'm hoping to see more of them in Rebirth, assuming they actually fit into the plot.
Also Nero/Weiss is a cute pairing and I'm appreciating them more.

Final Fantasy VII OC: Mauve the Eminence
TW: Mentions of grooming
Mauve
Other Names: Real name unknown, Mauve the Eminence (モーヴ・の・エミネンス Mōvu no Eminensu), Mauve Eveque, Purple-0036, Popess
Age: 19
Affiliation: Deepground; Shinra Electric Power Company
Occupation: Member of the Tsviets (Lower Colors)
Appearance: Mauve has long wavy blond-purple ombre hair and mauve eyes. She wears the female Deepground soldier uniform with several mauve attachments. They are shoulders puff sleeves, a frilly skirt, a pair of ballet flats, and evening gloves.
Weapon: Rapier (infused with mako, giving it a mauve glow)
Abilities: Mauve has an enhanced body due to mako, resulting in superhuman speed, strength, reflexes, stamina, and durability. She is very talented with fencing as she wields a mako-infused rapier. She primarily uses ice materia to fight. The way she moves while fighting resembles ballet.
Personality: Mauve is a self-centered, hedonistic sadomasochist. She wants to indulge in every pleasure in the outside world. Her sadism has been shown when she tortures low-ranking Deepground soldiers. Like her younger brother, Orel, she believes that those who live in sin should have successful lives and those who live in virtue should be miserable. Despite her cruelty, she deeply cares about Orel and is protective of him despite her teasing. From Sonon’s experience, Mauve is an elegant maniac who enjoys luxury.
Origins: Mauve is a member of the Lower Colored Tsviets and the older sister of Orel. She, along with Orel, was raised in Sector 4, Midgar by their mother. When she was three and Orel was a few months old, both of them were taken to Deepground when their mother died, along with losing their names. It remains unknown as to why they were taken to there. This is where they were experimented on and was forced into brutal and rigorous training. During this time, both of the siblings were being groomed by a scientist, who taught them about “libertinism” in order to get them to be more accepting of the moral depravity of Deepground and to take advantage of them when they are older. As they grow and gotten better, they are promoted to be apart of the Tsviets. This is where Mauve got her current name and was able to act out their brutality on the soldiers. She had tortured many of them in various ways. She even enjoys harming herself, like self-flagellation and proving others to cane her. She has no issue in performing sexual acts on her brother. Mauve is bored and disgusted with Yuffie’s “warrior savior’ mindset and Sonon’s kindness and protectiveness over the princess. So she suggested Weiss to be a bit “rougher” on her to ensure pregnancy and to spank her if she misbehaves. Like the other Lower Colored Tsviets, Mauve would be locked in a cell whenever she’s not in training.

An utterly laughable circumstance Vincent found self in, bestowed upon him by WRO a duty to "supervise" both brothers to ensure their continuous cooperation and docile conduct. Succumb to a singular mission and one would be entangled within continuous servitude, no matter the organization. Accompanied by an exhalation, the gloved hand closed a book, one of many scattered around the room, indicating that the other man developed a penchant for reading; nevertheless the person in question was absent and the unwilling guard was obliged to follow.
Scarcely audible sigh slipped in between slightly parted lips, when he eventually found Nero nested on the roof, a rather appropriate location, taking into consideration the mechanical wings the other possessed. Rapidly concerned glance landed on the gun, still safely resting in its holster, as the gunman had no intention to utilize it. As own hands rested across his chest and the first words escaped Nero's mouth, an exceedingly unforeseen revelation compelled the carmine gaze to narrow and darken, the savagery of the conditions they were enforced to live in was hardly startling, as he himself was the witness to Hojo's barbarity and lack of regard towards anyone and anything save for own ambitions. A perceptible frown distorted the aloof image for an instant, yet eventually softened as the other proceeded to speak.
Tumblr media
As Nero's words touched upon his hearing, as if beckoned, Vincent shifted own regard to the book mentioned, an old tome from father's collection, littered with occasional notes at its margins. A peculiar interest, uncharacteristic for sitting in front of him a vicious man, who committed numerous crimes under the guise of ShinRa Underground group. Yet unlike the man clad in crimson, the other person was not given an option to refuse the servitude, only to embrace it. The experiments, the agony, the darkness were all too familiar, corroding, dehumanizing. Their rage and resentment were oh so ever comprehensible.
Unlike Weiss however, who was also provided with a relative freedom, the Sable did not display hostility yet, both in action and in words, which necessitated a thorough consideration. Mayhap this one did not know any better. Mayhap this one could learn to do better. The enhancements and beasts inside did not define who they were. "Any in particular caught your eye?" Unbeknownst to self a query jumped off the tip of his tongue, now beckoning the other to disclose a personal preference, and to facilitate the exchange Vincent vocalized own. "I'm personally fond of Canis Major." There were various myths and legends surrounding various constellations and stars, he could not claim to be an expert, but this knowledge could be shared.

 VIOLENT ACTION STARTERS
Tumblr media
The blow hits hard and fast, and its all Kadaj can do to keep his grip on his blade. Slitted eyes are wide with shock and.. Enjoyment? A hunger for battle, for new experiences. Rarely could he be hit, rarer still could someone make him hurt. It was fun, it was good.
He didn't recognise this beast, did not feel that familiar unfamiliar call that was the memories of 'him'. If he'd ever had anything to do with Sephiroth, it had been brief.
A laugh bubbled out of his throat as he leapt back, grounding himself to readjust his grip on the Souba. His legs started to leak out into black threads - like heavy mist. Ready to dissipate if needed.
"What a r e you?" Came the question, but with no malice or hate. It was pure curiosity, perhaps kinship? Strange creatures meeting in darkness.

I thought I posted this here ages ago, but I couldn't find it to link in another post I'm working on, so I'm posting it now!
Regardless of everything else surrounding the First SOLDIER battle royale game, I'm always going to be delighted that the timeline established in its opening cutscene indicates that Hojo and Lucrecia were experimenting on Vincent for around seven years before Lucy ran off and Hojo put him in the box.
See, the thing that's always bothered me about the known timeline of Vincent's life as it existed up until this cutscene dropped is that it kind of implied that Hojo did all his scientific body horror work in about two months, and then Lucrecia took over and spent a couple months on her part. This is...utterly ridiculous, for so many reasons, not the least of which is Shalua being aware of Lucrecia's work with Chaos having subjects, which it didn't prior to Grimoire's death—this project wouldn't have been ongoing long enough for Shalua to refer to "subjects" in Dirge if it was only a couple months of work.
The implication with the timeline shown in the FF7FS opening is that Lucrecia and Hojo both moved to Project 0 after their part of Project S was complete, presumably leaving Gast with Sephiroth while they tried to make superhumans that would be deployable sooner than a literal baby. We know it's post-Jenova Project, because Hollander is there but Gillian isn't, so she's already in Banora with baby Angeal. The team is shown working on Project 0 until around 1984, with Lucrecia present.
Hojo working on Vincent for a year or two while Lucrecia first gives birth to Sephiroth and then recovers from that whole ordeal makes sense. Him going back and forth between Midgar and Nibelheim trying shit on Vincent that he thinks might work on Project 0 also makes sense, given that we know Hojo's work on Vincent was eventually repurposed for a couple of the Tsviets, who are the current iteration of what Project 0 originally was.
When Vincent's body finally gives out, Hojo just kinda leaves him there, changing his focus entirely to Project 0, while Gast still has Sephiroth. Lucrecia comes back to Nibelheim at that point, for whatever reason, and picks up where Hojo left off, trying desperately to do something to keep from being responsible for killing both Valentines.
Gast leaves the company in 1984, whereupon Sephiroth is moved into Hojo's care—not Lucrecia's—and we can assume that Project 0 as a whole is shuffled.
This is the point where Lucrecia reaches the end of her rope. She's never going to get to meet her son, she's never going to get anywhere in this damn company, she's still so sick from the Jenova infection she contracted during her pregnancy. She can't do this anymore. So she dresses Vincent up like his dad (because his eyes look just like his father's), puts on a wedding dress she never got to wear, and leaves forever.
Hojo comes back to Nibelheim, possibly looking for Lucrecia—he either finds her "dead," or he only finds Vincent. Either way, Lucrecia ends up in the Nibel Mountains and Vincent ends up in the basement. With nothing left to lose and nothing holding him back, Hojo proceeds to track across the planet to find Gast and shoot him in the face.
This is a much better story.
This also explains why the official Dirge guide says that Vincent was asleep in the basement for, very specifically, 23 years, and why all Ultimania material cites that he was in the coffin for "over 20 years" even though he was shot to death 30 years ago. It's not a retcon. It never was. It's a clarification.
Vincent was killed in 1977, 30 years before Cloud found him during the Crisis. But he was under the knife and in the tubes for seven years after that, until the two equally brilliant psychopaths trying for opposing reasons to make him into Something Else finally gave up and put him in a box.
That's fantastic.
