What if the reason antis get confused about ‘gross shit’ being in the main tags is because they assume the main tags should be more algorithm-like?   That the ‘gross shit’ should sink to the bottom where it is never seen.   Bad news guys:  Most recent absolutely does not fucking work like that, and nobody has a clue how most popular works.

Tumblr Tagging
Only the first 20 tags on a post will show up in searches. After that, you’re just tagging for your own organization.
Is your post an original post or a reblog? Reblogging is a great way to share a post with others, but only original posts will appear in search results.
Including links in posts may affect its visibility.
TLDR: Original tags show up in searches. Reblog tags do not.

Hi LU friends.
By now you've probably seen my tag reminder post for AO3, and hopefully Krisis's important addition as well.
Let me also be abundantly clear: If you are creating post TotK LU Wild in the coming weeks, you need to tag that appropriately as well. Both on AO3 and here on Tumblr.
I am not interested in seeing your take on what changes for Wild with TotK. I am not interested in seeing how the Chain reacts to everything that is different in his Hyrule. I am not interested in having the game spoiled for me by your brainworms.
I want to play the game for myself, not read everyone else's takes.
I've already blocked every general TotK tag I can think of, but I'm happy to add more. Perhaps something like "lu TotK" or "lu TotK Wild" if that would be easiest. Just try to keep it organized.
(I am fully aware that AO3 has pre-emptively bungled their own fandom sorting system by combining the TotK and BotW fandoms, but character tags and additional tags still exist, so use them.)
Be courteous, be kind. We are all excited. But we also all want the joy of the game, so tag appropriately.

I need to know why people think it's ok to put two opposite, enemy ships in the same post and post it in the both ship tags. Do they really not see how based simply on the technical aspect of the ships - that they share the same character and thus can't work together, that they're mutually exclusive - it's most likely that shippers of one would dislike the other? That they wouldn't want to see that other ship in their tag? I'm genuinely confused, what's not clicking? They're turning their own multi-shipping into everyone else's problem and a burden and then act like victims when confronted, smh. Make two separate posts for two separate ships ffs, it's not that hard!

Hey!!
This is a general post so feel free to spread it but
Can people please learn how tags on tumblr work?
If you mention a thing AT ALL in a tag, no matter if it's just one word in a sentence, it WILL show up when people search that thing! Yes even if you are complaining about said thing.
So if you want to make a negative post about a particular fandom or media or fans of a certain thing, can you please either not mention it in the tags or divide it like "star//wars" or something like that.
No matter how annoying you find a thing, the majority of people who like it are just trying to have a nice time. I keep seeing like... hurtful and insulting and rude posts in tags I frequent and it's not great. So can people PLEASE learn how this works. Thanks so much!!

hey there, i saw your recent guide on Tumblr/tagging, but I'm kinda confused about one thing: tagging systems/organization. What are they and how do I use them?
I'm mainly asking because i would like to be able to at least link a page containing all my artwork as to organize/separate it from reblogs/unrelated posts. Is that possible? I guess something similar on Twitter would be "moments," where you can categorize your tweets by whatever topic you choose for people to find. Sorry if this was confusing, im just lost :(!
Ah, so yes, this is actually super easy to do! Tumblr is designed to be easy to go through stuff later, and it's tagging system is super functional for this.
Any tag that you use on a post can be used to sort your blog, you just click on the tag in the post and it will bring you to a page that looks like this https://the-final-sif.tumblr.com/tagged/sif%20answers
That's my tag for posted answers. You can use several tags for organization. Personally I use "sif speaks" for all my posts, "sif reblogs" for reblogs, "sif answers" etc. You can use whatever you want. Most people have a category tag (art, writing, etc) and then fandom/specific tags.
When you're linking tags, you can also add /chrono at the end of the link so the posts display in chronological order (very useful for linking comics/series that are best read in order).
This looks like this https://the-final-sif.tumblr.com/tagged/sif%20answers/chrono
That's really all there is to it. Just tag the posts with a consistent tag and then that tag can used to sort your posts.

Friends of tumblr new and old! A little PSA.
Something that’s started happening on tumblr in the last year or so is users self-censoring their posts. This is common practice on sites like TikTok where any “unapproved content” will get a post taken down hastily. This led to users on those sites, most especially TikTok, censoring their words in their captions and on-video texts to get around the sites’ censors. Some examples are “k!ll” for kill, “seggsy” for sexy, “3rotic” for erotic and a long, long list of others. On a site like TikTok where there is no filtering system to block any content that you don’t want to see, this doesn’t really affect other users that much. However, on Tumblr it’s a different story.
Here, we have a tagging system that, admittedly, is kind of hit or miss. That in itself deserves its own explanatory post. What it does really well on though is filtering/blocking! If a post is tagged with, for a very necessary example, #suicide , a person who has that tag filtered will have an altered version of that post show up on their dash, like this:
Tumblr media
That “View Post” button allows the user to have the full post appear, should they like to see what it is. But because of the filtering system, we’re able to very specifically curate which posts do and don’t appear on our dashes.
That all being said- what I’m asking you here to do is to NOT self-censor your words! If a post regarding suicide is tagged as #su!c!de or su!cid3 or any other variation on the spelling outside of #suicide , any users who have simply #suicide filtered/blocked will have that post come up on their dash without any sort of filtering to keep them from seeing its content. So please, spell words as they are actually spelled and tag posts with whatever pertains to the posts that lets users and the tagging system properly identify and filter as needed.
Thank you! And happy blogging!

If your going to post anti stuff at least tag it anti oaky? That way is with that tag blocked can avoid you. You can use “character tag” as long as you ALSO use the anti tag!! Don’t just use the character tag!!

Hey tumblr
If I have saved tags and I start typing in that saved tag...my assumption based on YEARS using this site is that you will prompt me to select that tag NOT make me type the entire thing out
WTF is going on?

Tagging
So, I saw a post from @blackrosesandwhump , that said that only the first five tags in a post show up in searches. I was concerned about my stuff, because I tag in the order things pop into my head, so I checked tumblr help.
They say:
"Only the first 20 tags on a post will show up in searches. After that, you’re just tagging for show."
Whew. This is better.

Some people sorely need a reminder so here it goes:
This is not Instagram where you can stuff your post with fifteen million unrelated tags and no will care. If you wanna write every tag in existence so that you can get those cute little likes to fill your empty lonely life with the tiniest amount of serotonin head on back to Instagram. We don't do that shit here.

Different anon, but the tagging thing in general has always been interesting to me. I see a lot of people who only use tags to add additional thoughts to their posts, not to assign searchable key words. I think your blog might actually be one of the few blogs I follow that uses tags as they were originally intended, apart from myself. I'd guess the majority of blogs I follow (across fandoms and other interests, not just spn) use the tags mainly to add additional thoughts.
I wonder if it's a generational thing? Or influenced by what other social media you use/grew up with?
Huh, hadn't really thought about that. I can't speak for everyone, but for me, it's work-related. I create material for a library of training resources and in order for users to find what they need, everything has to be tagged correctly. I learned that long before I learned Tumblr and I guess habits are hard to break! I do sometimes add additional thoughts, but generally only after I've tagged the searchable terms.
