ok another thing that i am really enjoying about queen cheorin is the scenes where it contrasts the same event from different points of view by changing the music (the scene where the queen is dancing in the rain and the hallway fight scene).

just want to sit a bunch of hollywood types down to show them the importance of music in storytelling.

TV Recommendations: Mr Queen

Jang Bong Hwan was a playboy living high in life. The head chef of The Blue House (Korean equivalent to the White House), his talents earned him a fare share of admirers- and enemies.

When Bong Hwan is framed for deliberately sabotaging a Chinese delegates food by leaving a dangerous fish hook inside, he is forced out of his position and falls on hard times.

And then the police come to take him in for investigation over the matter. Jang Bong Hwan flees and accidentally falls from his balcony into his apartment tower’s swimming pool.

Deep in the water, he sees a vision of a young woman reaching down to him and takes her hand-

-then wakes up in the 1850s, in the body of Kim So Yong, known to history as Queen Cheorin of Joseon-Korea. 

Jang Bong Hwan’s vision of a woman drowning was none other than Queen Cheorin, and fate has drawn the two together. Someone tried to claim the Queen’s life, and it is thanks to Bong Hwan’s soul in her body that she survived.

Bong Hwan has no interest whatsoever in being a Korean queen. He wants to bed the lovely ladies and get the hell back to his own time- especially before the Queen’s husband starts sniffing around. King Cheoljong is not remembered well by history. He is known as being stupid and horny, and his weak rein is seen as a contributing factor to destabilizing Korea and priming it for the Japanese invasion.

But things are not always as they seem. As Bong Hwan does his- her- best to blend in and stay alive in the treacherous royal palace, he starts investigating who would have thrown the Queen into the lake, nearly killing her. 

What he finds instead is the King’s own deepest secret- one he would kill to keep: That King Cheoljong’s weakness is a ruse to flush out corrupt and wicked officials. A battle he’s destined to lose- since history doesn’t remember him as the hero he’s trying to be.

The more Bong Hwan watches the king struggle, the more he feels duty bound to protect the king and stay by his side.

But who exactly do the growing feelings of love in Bong Hwan’s heart belong to? Has he fallen for the king? Or is Queen Cheorin stirring from her slumber? How does Bong Hwan return to his own time?

And can the Korean imperial family handle a Queen from the modern era who takes no shit and knows how to make a Big Mac?

Last song: Late Regret by Ong Seong Wu. The 1-hour loop. I played this song as I was driving home from the office (had to come to the office to settle some stuff otherwise I’d be working from home). I’m having a hard time of moving on from this drama rofl.

Last film: Does KBS Drama Special count? If yes, A Jaunt (2020 KBS Drama Special). Otherwise, After We Collided on Netflix (really didn’t expect it to be raunchy tho I just watched it because I saw After previously and it was kinda nice).

Currently watching: Cheat on Me If You Can (KBS2), Run On (JTBC), Queen Cheorin (tvN). I also watch Man in a Veil (KBS2) if I feel like sitting in front of the TV and the drama is airing (even reruns) because I love my makjang rofl.

Currently reading: audit findings that i need to answer (lol I’m such a boring corporate worker). I much prefer watching drama and obsessing about it than reading though.

Part 3

/Spoiler alert for anyone who hasn't seen ep 7 and 8 yet/

The memories that flashed back and the potential of two girls not just one is not small.

We see Hwa Jin runnig, maybe fearing the King has remembered. And I find parallels with the flashback but reversed. In the past there too are three people.

Two are standing, and one is being dragged away seemingly. In the present two are sitting and one is running towards them. So If we follow the reversed logic. The one being dragged will be Kim So Yong and the two standing the King and Jo Hwa Jin. Still there is the possibility of it being Kim So Yong and the King and the one dragged away Jo Hwa Jin. And we learn that the King is missing some memories.

Well that is a very interesting. Why would he say that is relief. Probably because the clan is heavyly involved in this "incident" or whatever it is. So maybe the Queen's father is directly involved in it. So I'm very curious how will the King get his memories back, who will tell him about the secret between Jo Hwa Jin and Kim So Yong.

something that i’m enjoying about queen cheorin is how it’s contrasting degrees of misogyny. like jang bong hwan in episode 1 seems to not really respect women (him forgetting the woman’s name). but once he’s a few hundred years in the past, he’s like ‘wtf’ whenever someone tells him/kim so yong that women are supposed to act a certain way. gets offended when the royal chef says women shouldn’t be in the kitchen. nearly rips the king apart for seeking to hurt someone weaker and less powerful than him (that scene was so goooooood).

they’re both cases of misogyny, but one is this kind of casual thoughtlessness/self-centeredness and the other is how a society is structured to control and take advantage of women.
