The 20 Most Positive Moments of 21 Years of the “New Browns”
Tumblr media
In the wake of yet another disappointing Cleveland Browns season, I tried to think about the more positive moments since the Browns returned in 1999. It actually made me sadder but I put together this list of The Top 20 Positive Moments of The First 21 Years of the “New Browns.” I made some ground rules. Nothing from this terrible season would be included (and, frankly, nothing actually was even worthy in my mind of the top 20). Only one “notorious” incident is included because I found positives in it whereas there’s none to be found with Dwyane Rudd’s helmet throw or Orlando Brown pushing down a referee or Myles Garrett swinging a helmet at Mason Rudolph or any of the many games the Browns managed to blow. I tried to factor in the impact of the moment on the organization as a whole, the particular seasons, and the fans. And, as I’d find out, finding 20 was still like pulling teeth by the end. So, here we go with links to each (YouTube is amazing if you want to watch bad football)!
20. Week 16, 2016: Browns 20, Chargers 17
Nothing really introduces you to how sad the past two decades have been for the Browns than them avoiding going 0-16 being a top 20 moment. In a year that the Cavs won the championship and the Indians almost won the World Series, the Browns delivered us this. Well, have fun watching RG3’s greatest moment in Cleveland.
19. Week 5, 2013: Browns 37, Bills 24
It was Thursday night football. It was Jim Brown night. The Browns were 2-2 and had actually looked promising under formerly 3rd string quarterback Brian Hoyer. But Hoyer then went down with a season-ending injury. This likely turned into the best moment and night of Brandon Weeden’s career in the NFL and that’s saying a lot considering he only threw for 197 yards and 1 touchdown. Hoyer’s injury proved deadly to first-year head coach Rob Chudzinski. He only won one game for the remainder of the season and was fired.
18. Week 9, 2010: Browns 34, Patriots 14
Coming off a bye week, the Browns were playing the 6-1 Patriots. They shockingly blew them out as Peyton Hillis had a field day and Eric Mangini beat his mentor in Bill Belichick. Of course, by the end of the year, Mangini was fired with new “football czar” Mike Holmgren coming in. But, a blowout of the most successful organization of the 20 years your organization has been incompetent is worthy of making the list.
17. Week 15, 2018: Browns 17, Broncos 16
I’ll admit to having a bias if the Browns actually show up in a primetime, nationally televised game. In a year where they fired coach Hue Jackson mid-season and were riding a wave of excitement with interim head coach Gregg Williams and rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield, the Browns held on in a hostile environment in Denver. It was highlighted with a Jabrill Peppers sack to end the game. Peppers was traded in the offseason.
16. Week 12, 2014: Browns 26, Falcons 24
I remember this game mostly because both head coaches (Mike Pettine and Mike Smith) did a great job in trying to get both of their respective teams to lose the game. Despite a last-minute field goal by the Falcons to go down 24-23, Brian Hoyer and the Browns managed to engineer a drive to win the game. They were 7-4 with the win. Of course, things came crashing down in subsequent weeks, Pettine had to push Johnny Manziel in to the starter role as I watched the game while experiencing one of the worst hangovers of my life and the rest is history. On a personal level, I quit drinking 6 months later. Sadly, Johnny Manziel did not.
15. Week 1, 2004: Browns 20, Ravens 3
Nothing makes a fan base feel better than to start off a season on a winning note. Of course, the Browns have only delivered this to its fans once in 21 seasons. For that reason alone, this game makes this list. Beating a division rival like the Ravens is great. Doing so to start the season is great. Other than, this game had no impact other than to spoil Deion Sanders’s first game with the Ravens. Yes, Deion Sanders was on the Ravens.
14. Week 6, 2008: Browns 35, Giants 14
2008 was a year of high expectations. The Browns were coming off a 10-6 season but they trudged out with an 0-3 record and one of the organization’s favorite things: a quarterback controversy. With those expectations came more national games and the Browns faced the defending champion New York Giants on Monday Night Football. Surprisingly, they delivered on the kind of expectations for the season by blowing out the Giants at home and giving something great to the fans. If anything, watching these highlights will remind that you Darnell Dinkins scored a touchdown on Monday Night Football and this is the easily the greatest moment in his NFL career. The season, of course, ended terribly with the Browns on a 6-game losing streak, being shut out by both the Bengals and Steelers, and the organization firing GM Phil Savage and head coach Romeo Crennel.
13. Week 14, 2001: Jaguars 15, Browns 10
This was Bottlegate. Sure, this is supposed to be a list of positive moments. But, even though notorious and likely not a great look for Cleveland, this season was the first glimmers of the Browns being on the right path to winning as an organization. It was a moment that questioned officiating and replay and the Browns needed this win to cling on to their playoff hopes. The moment was a raw response from a fan base whose team was stolen away from by the league and now it felt as if a game with playoff implications was being stolen away from them as well. I can recall, even as a teenager, saying, “If I were at the game, I would have thrown something.” So, even if regrettable, it somehow made sense at the time and spoke to the fan’s energy and desperation for a winner. The Browns dropped to 6-7 with the loss and finished 7-9.
12. Week 7, 2010: Reggie Hodges Fake Punt
As we’ll come to see in this list, the “New Browns” have managed to get most of their really memorable moments out of special teams players. That was the case when Reggie Hodges ran 68 yards on a fake punt as the Browns upset the defending champion New Orleans Saints in the SuperDome, 30-17.
11. Wild Card Playoffs, 2002: Kelly Holcomb
As devastating as the loss in the only “New Browns” playoff appearance is, quarterback Kelly Holcomb gave arguably the best performance by a Brown of this 21-year era. Holcomb went 26-for-43 with 429 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 1 interception. He also started a quarterback controversy for the next season that ultimately buried both his and Tim Couch’s careers.
10. Week 15, 2009: Jerome Harrison
The Browns won the game, 41-34, in a 4-game winning streak to end the season that helped save Mangini’s job. But what was most important was Jerome Harrison’s 286 rushing yards which currently ranks 3rd on the list for most rushing yards in a single game. It made the fact that #2 Jamal Lewis’s 295 yards was against the Browns a little better. It also is additionally better understanding where Harrison’s career went from here. After being traded to the Eagles, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Told by doctors that he would be a quadriplegic, Harrison has battled to now walk again.
9. Week 14, 2009: Browns 13, Steelers 6
The week prior to Harrison’s breakout game, the Steelers visited Browns Stadium for a Thursday night game. In front of a national crowd, Mangini and his team delivered an impressive defensive performance. There was something satisfying in watching the Browns sack Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger 8 times in the below-zero temperatures of Cleveland. It was the type of swarming defense and environment in the stadium that the Browns of the past brought to their fans. Sadly, Roethlisberger remains the winningest quarterback in the new Cleveland Browns Stadium history.
8. Week 2, 2007: Browns 51, Bengals 45
The Browns got killed in Week 1 against the Steelers. They traded starting quarterback Charlie Frye in between weeks. It looked like another dysfunctional season ahead. Then, strangely enough, the offense looked explosive. A shootout occurred at Browns stadium and they ended up victorious on the way to a season that saw the team nearly make the playoffs and produce 6 Pro Bowlers.
7. Week 3, 2018: Browns 21, Jets 17
The Browns looked lifeless on offense to start the game under Tyrod Taylor. After going out with an injury, rookie quarterback Mayfield entered the game and provided a spark for the Thursday night crowd in Cleveland. After an 0-16 season, the #1 overall pick engineered a comeback for the Browns’ first win in 20 games and hope for the organization.
6. Week 5, 2003: Browns 33, Steelers 13
On Sunday Night Football, Tim Couch delivered the best game of his career on the road against a bitter rival. Couch threw 20-for-25, 208 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception. The game put the Browns at 2-3. They of course fell apart ending the season at 5-11 but this was a dominating, road primetime performance (rare in this 21-year “New Browns” era).
5. Week 8, 1999: Browns 21, Saints 16
The Browns were 0-7 entering this game. They fell behind 16-14 in the last minute of the game and got the ball back with 16 seconds left. With 2 seconds left, Couch heaved a Hail Mary that was tipped and amazingly caught by wide receiver Kevin Johnson. It was an unthinkable way for the “New Browns” to notch their first ever win in their return.
Tumblr media
4. Week 11, 2007: Browns 33, Ravens 30 (OT)
In an actually meaningful season with the Browns down 3, the always reliable Phil Dawson came in to attempt a game-tying field goal. It initially looked the ball hit the crossbar and bounced out as the Ravens rejoiced. But, upon review, the ball actually went in, hitting the stanchion and bouncing back out. The game went to overtime where Dawson kicked the game winner. It was perhaps the most exciting win in the Browns near playoff run in 2007.
3. Week 10, 2007: Josh Cribbs Kickoff Return
If it wasn’t for the fact that the Browns lost the game to the Steelers, 31-28, this would be the “New Browns” greatest moment of its greatest season. In what looked like it would be a terrible play leading to the Browns being backed up within their own 5, Cribbs did the magic that made him a legend to Browns fans and returning of the great kickoffs for a touchdown not just in Browns history but in NFL history.
2. 2007 NFL Draft: Browns Pick Joe Thomas
When you are incompetent for 21 years like the “New Browns,” you are always playing for the NFL Draft. In 2007, the Browns shockingly got it right. They picked Joe Thomas with the #3 overall pick. As sad as it is that an offensive lineman could be the #2 most memorable moment in 21 years, Thomas represented everything about Cleveland and the Browns. He will be a Hall of Famer and have his place in the Browns Ring of Honor. He’s a beloved legend who never wanted to leave Cleveland and wanted to be a part of a winner here for the fans until his body wouldn’t let him do it anymore.
1. Week 17, 2002: Browns 24, Falcons 16
A team needs to have an iconic call and moment and Jim Donovan screaming “Run, William, Run!” may not be the best but it’s all the “New Browns” have. It was a great run that ultimately catapulted the Browns into their only playoff appearance of these 21 seasons and made the stadium feel as electric as it did in Municipal.
Over the course of me writing this, the Browns fired Freddie Kitchens. So, once again, we’re waiting for next year…

The 10 surprising things from Sunday your co-workers will be talking about
Tumblr media
Drew Brees finally beat the Ravens in an unexpected way, the Jaguars really benched Blake Bortles, and Aaron Donald might, somehow, be better than we thought.
NFL Sunday started early in Week 7. And so did the surprises.
Before the 1 p.m. games even started, we got a curveball from abroad. The Titans and Chargers finally gave London fans a little bit (emphasis on little) of excitement when the Titans scored a touchdown on fourth-and-1 with 30 seconds left. Rather than go for the tie, Tennessee head coach Mike Vrabel decided to go for 2. The aggressiveness was admirable, the play call was not. Marcus Mariota’s throw fell incomplete and the Chargers got to head back home jet-lagged and sitting at 5-2.
Then prior to the Eagles and Panthers kicking off, things away from the playing field took a more serious tone. Eric Reid and Malcolm Jenkins had a heated confrontation that reverberated throughout the day.
The NFL is still predictable in other ways, though. Jason Garrett’s conservative coaching cost the Cowboys a chance at a win, and the day ended exactly how you would expect it to: Patrick Mahomes was an offensive machine, while Marvin Lewis’ team was humiliated in primetime.
Here’s what else everyone will be talking about Monday:
1. Drew Brees finally beat the Ravens ... thanks to Justin Tucker missing an extra point
Coming into Sunday, Drew Brees was 0-4 against the Ravens. They were the only team he had yet to beat in his illustrious career — and that included his own Saints, a team he handed a 43-17 loss to almost 14 years ago when he was with the Chargers.
It was already a milestone day for Brees, who became the fourth quarterback ever to throw 500 career touchdowns. Then late in the second half, it looked like Brees had wrapped up that elusive win in Baltimore.
But the Ravens came roaring back. Joe Flacco’s touchdown strike to John Brown with 14 seconds left on the clock appeared destined to send the No. 1 scoring offense vs. No. 1 defense battle to overtime. Brown’s catch made it 24-23, putting a game-tying extra point on the trusted shoulders of the most accurate kicker in NFL history. Justin Tucker had never missed an extra point or any field goal from 33 yards or less — a span of 300 professional kicks.
It turns out 300 was a natural stopping point for the All-Pro’s streak. Tucker’s kick sliced wide right, effectively dooming his team to a one-point loss at home.
Everyone was surprised — but none more so than Tucker himself.
Tumblr media
And just like that, Brees joined Peyton Manning and Brett Favre as the only quarterbacks to ever beat all 32 NFL teams.
Now that we think about it, though, maybe this was another conspiracy ...
2. Old man Adrian Peterson tripled up Ezekiel Elliott’s rushing total
There were plenty of weird stories coursing through the NFC East showdown between Washington and Dallas. Dak Prescott got smashed to bits and returned moments later to absolutely dust the Washington secondary with an absolute bomb to a wide-open Michael Gallup:
"Dak Prescott can't throw deep" pic.twitter.com/OJx18nHMjy
— Blogging The Boys (@BloggingTheBoys) October 21, 2018
Brett Maher saw a game-tying 47-yard field goal attempt turn into a 52-yarder thanks to a rarely called penalty on his long snapper, then watched in horror as a kick that would have been good from 47 clanged off the left upright as it came in hot from 52.
But the most surprising development from Sunday’s game may have been Adrian Peterson using his old man strength to triple Ezekiel Elliott’s rushing output. The veteran tailback proved he’s still an upper-tier runner, even at age 33, after cutting up the Dallas defense for 99 yards on 24 carries. Elliott, on the other hand, came in to Week 7 averaging nearly 98 yards per contest but ran the ball 15 times for just 33 yards.
3. The Bucs DON’T fall victim to their kicker curse
Kickers cost two different teams a chance at a win Sunday. Shockingly, the Bucs were not one of them — barely.
With 45 seconds left in regulation, the Buccaneers took their foot off the gas against the Browns. Instead of trying to drive the last 24 yards for a game-winning touchdown — or at least a closer field goal — Tampa Bay did a run play for 3 yards and set up a 40-yard field goal to break a 23-23 tie.
That painfully conservative approach might’ve been a safe, smart finish for most teams, but this is the Buccaneers. They’ve been cursed at the kicker position for years. So, of course, Chandler Catanzaro missed it and the game went to overtime.
What was so surprising about the way the game finished was that the Buccaneers actually got a successful field goal to win it. And from 59 yards too!
Just look at Baker Mayfield trying to comprehend what he saw:
Tumblr media
The Buccaneers’ kicking woes may not be gone altogether, but they disappeared long enough for Tampa Bay to escape with a win against the Browns.
4. Jalen Ramsey was on the other side of some well-earned trash talk
Ramsey is an All-Pro cornerback, so when he talks trash, he’s usually right. One wide receiver who has typically escaped his scorn is Houston’s DeAndre Hopkins. He showed us all why on Sunday.
Hopkins, paired off against Ramsey much of the afternoon, only had three receptions on eight targets, but the balls he did catch were tailor-made to frustrate the Jaguars. One was a morale-draining touchdown grab that gave the Texans a 20-0 lead in the third quarter. Before that, a one-handed catch on a deep ball down the sideline left Ramsey visibly annoyed.
.@DeAndreHopkins IS THAT DUDE.#HOUvsJAX pic.twitter.com/BXcq7uQZpv
— Houston Texans (@HoustonTexans) October 21, 2018
But Hopkins’ burns weren’t limited to the playing field.
DeAndre Hopkins was asked about his rivalry with Jalen Ramsey. He replied: How can that be a rivalry? What’s the Texans’ record vs the Jags with Ramsey on the team? As he left the room he said: “7-2”
— Aaron Reiss (@aaronjreiss) October 21, 2018
The Texans are actually only 3-2 against Jacksonville when Ramsey is on the field, but still. Ouch.
And now, after starting 0-3, the Texans lead the AFC South — somehow.
5. The Jaguars actually benched Blake Bortles
It finally happened. The Jaguars finally said “enough” to the Bortles era — at least for an afternoon.
Jacksonville benched its embattled starter following a third-quarter fumble against the Texans, instead turning to Cody Kessler — a passer who couldn’t even crack the Browns starting QB lineup during their 0-16 2017 campaign. It wasn’t hard to see why Doug Marrone made the call; Bortles had led the Jaguars to just 21 points in his last 10 quarters. He had scored zero points in the first half of three straight games for the first time in franchise history and was 6-of-12 for 61 yards and zero touchdowns when he got yanked from the lineup.
Kessler wasn’t much better, but at least he found the end zone. His third-quarter scramble-and-strike to T.J. Yeldon served as his team’s only points of the afternoon in a game we should all agree to never speak about again.
What a play @CodyKessler6 and @T_Yeldon!#DUUUVAL pic.twitter.com/V8RX3vlGL4
— #DUUUVAL (@Jaguars) October 21, 2018
6. The Bears’ last-ditch comeback effort landed 1 yard short of amazing, unlikely redemption
Mitchell Trubisky had trouble dealing with the Patriots’ dialed-up pass rush Sunday — at least with his arm — coughing up a 17-7 first half lead and eventually trailing Bill Belichick’s team 38-24 with six minutes to play. But the second-year quarterback rose to the challenge, engineering a 63-yard drive that put his Bears within seven points and then getting the ball back at his own 20 with 24 seconds to play.
Trubisky took advantage of New England’s stretched defense to drive Chicago to its own 45-yard line with a single second left on the clock, then uncorked a Hail Mary that traveled 54 yards through the air and into the waiting hands of Kevin White ...
... who was then stopped at the New England 1-yard line.
The Bears were *that* close : CBS #NEvsCHIpic.twitter.com/FX8NKL6kzT
— ESPN (@espn) October 21, 2018
7. Cordarrelle Patterson was the template for the Patriots’ ability to fix their own mistakes
Patterson has provided value for the Patriots as a unique wide receiver for a shallow depth chart, but with Josh Gordon and Julian Edelman now on the active roster his best opportunity to impact a game with New England comes on special teams. And he impacted the hell out of Sunday’s Patriots-Bears game, on both sides of the ball.
Patterson’s first kickoff return of the day saw him fumble a ball so cleanly to Chicago’s DeAndre Houston-Carson that it looked like a planned lateral. Five plays later, Mitchell Trubisky’s 72-yard, 8-yard touchdown run gave the Bears their first lead of the game.
But the dynamic returner got back to even two kickoffs later, dusting Chicago’s kick coverage so thoroughly that he was able to high-five his teammates before dancing his way into the end zone without a single Bear within 30 yards.
dusting a team's kickoff coverage so thoroughly that you can high-five a teammate at the 5 and low-kick into the end zone is a power move pic.twitter.com/Y8uDLaca6z
— Christian D'Andrea (@TrainIsland) October 21, 2018
It was Patterson’s sixth career kickoff return touchdown — three times as many as any other player in the league has since his debut in 2013.
More importantly, it set the tone for the Patriots, who spent much of Week 7 cleaning up their own mistakes. New England gave up 24+ points for the fifth time in seven games this fall, but big plays from the offense and special teams — Kyle Van Noy added a blocked punt return for a touchdown — prevented those problems from becoming fatal.
Of course, those corrections didn’t apply to Bill Belichick’s sartorial decisions.
Bill Belichick doesn't care about your "the logo is upside down". pic.twitter.com/8Nk8c2WsZP
— Pats Pulpit (@patspulpit) October 21, 2018
8. The Panthers and Eagles swapped bodies in the fourth quarter
For most of the afternoon, the Eagles were comfortably ahead. They weren’t lighting up the Panthers, but they had found a nice rhythm and Carson Wentz looked sharp.
The Panthers, meanwhile, had put together some drives that ended in a lot of punting, a disappointing follow up to their loss last week to Washington.
Then the fourth quarter happened. The Panthers offense came alive, once again, late in the game. Unlike last week, this time it wasn’t too little, too late. Instead, Cam Newton led three straight touchdown drives, going 16 of 22 for 201 yards in the fourth quarter. No play mattered more than on fourth-and-10 right before the two-minute warning, when he juuuuust managed to get the ball out of his hands to find Torrey Smith for a first down:
Absurd throw and catch from Cam Newton and Torrey Smith. Carolina is somehow still alive pic.twitter.com/H5P2QjJWyA
— Billy Marshall (@BillyM_91) October 21, 2018
Three plays later, he hooked up with Greg Olsen for the touchdown — and it turned out to be the game winner.
It’s not the first time the Panthers have come back. It’s not the first time the Eagles have blown a big lead. But after last week, when the Panthers couldn’t pull things together at the end of the game and the Eagles looked like they were finally cooking in a big win over the Giants, this came as a surprise.
It especially leaves the defending champs with some questions. They’re just 3-4, and should be better than that.
9. The Lions’ running game is for real
We had hope that Kerryon Johnson could be the answer to the Lions’ long-suffering running back woes when he became their first player to rush for 100 yards in a game since 2013. But in the two games after that, Johnson was held under 100 yards both times.
Then he exploded Sunday against the Dolphins for 158 yards, the most by a Lions running back since Jahvid Best racked up 163 on the ground in 2011.
Between Johnson, LeGarrette Blount, and cameos from Golden Tate, Matthew Stafford, and Ameer Abdullah, Detroit ended up with 248 rushing yards. That was the most for the team since Nov. 23, 1997, when they beat a Colts team led by quarterback Jim Harbaugh.
The Lions rushed for 248 yards today, the most by Detroit in a single game since Barry Sanders retired.
— Football Perspective (@fbgchase) October 22, 2018
The Lions even finished with more rushing yards than passing (217) in their 32-21 win over Miami.
10. Aaron Donald had how many sacks now?
There’s not much Aaron Donald can do that would surprise us. But we admit, we kinda tuned out what was an easy win for the Rams over the 49ers. So this was our reaction at the end of the LA’s 39-10 beatdown:
Wait 4 sacks for Donald today?!
— Stephen White (@sgw94) October 21, 2018
That’s the most ever in a game for Donald, and the most by any player in a game this year. Also worth a reminder that Donald, who currently leads the NFL with eight sacks this season, is a defensive tackle who now has 47 career sacks.
That’s not all either, Donald also had nine tackles, six tackles for loss, five quarterback hits, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery against the 49ers. Poor C.J. Beathard. But good thing for the Rams that they made sure Donald is rich.

New on Sports Illustrated: Knights look to push Blackhawks to brink of elimination
The Vegas Golden Knights can take a commanding lead over the Chicago Blackhawks in their Western Conference first-round series with another win on Saturday in Edmonton.
The top-seeded Golden Knights are up 2-0 heading into Game 3 of the best-of-seven series. Resting their bodies before back-to-back games will be key for both teams, and so will the mental preparation.
"Our group knows they want to be here for the long haul, and that's going to be a piece of it," Vegas coach Peter DeBoer told reporters.
DeBoer could face a difficult lineup decision in Game 3.
Max Pacioretty, who led the Golden Knights in goals and points during the regular season, did not play in Game 2. His replacement, Tomas Nosek, left late in the second period and did not return.
DeBoer would only confirm both were "unfit to play," and did not have an update on either player Friday morning.
Pacioretty did not accompany his teammates to Edmonton initially, missing the three round-robin games that Vegas won to clinch the top seed. He played in the 4-1 win in Game 1, but wasn't a factor in the scoring.
If both Pacioretty and Nosek are unable to play in Game 3, the Golden Knights would need to choose among forwards Patrick Brown, Reid Duke, Keegan Kolesar, Peyton Krebs and Gage Quinney, all of whom are reportedly in Edmonton.
The Blackhawks were less than an inch away from tying the series during overtime of Game 2 on Thursday, but Dylan Strome's wrist shot hit the crossbar and deflected to the side of the net.
Little more than five minutes later, Reilly Smith won it 4-3 for Vegas with his third goal of the series.
"Disappointing, because I thought we played hard," Blackhawks coach Jeremy Colliton said. "At the same time, we've got to keep improving. We're not out of it. We're going to regroup and come out raring to go in Game 3."
Colliton recognizes that the Blackhawks face a tough task being down 2-0 to a deep and talented team like Vegas. He's looking forward to seeing how his team responds.
"It's a chance to show our character," he said.
Colliton scratched Adam Boqvist in Game 2 and elected to play another rookie defenseman, Lucas Carlsson, who was a minus-2 in 10:33 of ice time.
Boqvist, the No. 8 overall pick in the 2018 NHL Draft, is a minus-3 with no points in five postseason games.
"We're hoping Boqy, with a day of rest, can come back, potentially, with another level for us," Colliton said.
Robin Lehner has started both games in goal for Vegas, but will likely sit one of the back-to-back games on Saturday and Sunday.
Marc-Andre Fleury would start in the other game, bringing 79 playoff wins and three Stanley Cup titles on his resume.
"I think I've been clear since we started this that we've got two starters," DeBoer said. "How I roll them out is going to be day to day based on what I feel gives us the best chance to win a game, and win a series. That's not going to change."

Fox news Carr: Six playoff offenses that concern me - NFL.com
Fox news
Correct adore that, 20 NFL groups are completed for the season. Meanwhile, a dozen organizations advance to a postseason tournament that'll culminate with Mammoth Bowl LIV in Miami.
These 12 final groups are not ideal. Truly, I honest not too long within the past wrote about my issues with the Buffalo Bills, who, because the AFC's No. 5 seed, will focus on with the fourth-seeded Houston Texans to begin Wild Card Weekend. Long narrative short, the offense has constructed a basis and QB Josh Allen has improved this season, but I ponder the production might presumably well maybe stare a gigantic jump with a better map makes relate of Allen extra within the breeze game. There had been other components, but that's the gist.
When taking a see at the opposite 11 playoff groups, 5 offensive units mission me heading into this single-elimination tourney:
Minnesota Vikings: The Vikings' offense is primarily based on the outdoor-zone breeze game. So unheard of so that it's easy to express how the unit will manufacture very early on in any given ballgame. Fortuitously, Dalvin Cook says he's "difficult to head" for the playoffs. If the Vikings can rep their Pro Bowl motivate entering into the breeze game in opposition to the Glossy Orleans Saints on Sunday, things will beginning up for Kirk Cousins and the downfield passing attack. If the outdoor-zone runs are not there on the main couple drives, I'm timid the writing shall be on the wall for Minnesota. Correct two weeks within the past, the Inexperienced Bay Packers old rather about a stunts and schematically precipitated the Vikes complications in zone runs. This compelled Cousins to primarily rely on dropback passes, which is never the QB's strength, and Minnesota lost the game while compiling correct seven first downs. Seven. Or not it's not correct the zone-breeze game that worries me, either. There are a ton of cases when groups limit that aspect of the Vikings' game blueprint, but the most attention-grabbing mission is that they originate not beget a counter that has been constant. This makes the attack very moderate.
Glossy England Patriots: The Patriots' struggles were extensively mentioned for weeks, but the offense would not see as bleak to me. That mentioned, about a things must happen for this unit to search out some rhythm and consistency, and one among them is lining up in I-formation with linebacker/fullback Elandon Roberts, who chanced on the tip zone Sunday in opposition to the Dolphins. Roberts has most attention-grabbing carried out a tiny sequence of snaps as a fullback, but I ponder it's a see we are going to stare unheard of extra of in January to relieve rep the breeze game going. As a long way because the aerial attack is anxious, the receiving corps is at the center of the offense's points. If Julian Edelman is doubled adore he was all game Sunday, N'Keal Harry, Mohamed Sanu and Jakobi Meyers beget to step up. Namely, the Pats want Harry (6-foot-4, 225 pounds) to alter into extra adore Randy Moss overnight. OK, that's an insanely big philosophize. But he at least wants to be a man who requires extra than one-on-one protection. He's shown indicators that he can be that originate of player, but not repeatedly. All of this has affected Tom Brady, who's not any spring rooster but also has loads left at 42.
Houston Texans: This unit issues me the least out of this neighborhood, but there's aloof room to effort for the reason that Texans are not abundant surroundings pleasant. They live and die by chunk plays. That's why they've well-liked-season wins over the Chiefs and Patriots, and why they had been blown out at home by the Broncos. Houston has the skill to construct up 40 aspects in any game, but the Texans' efficiency can fade as soon as in some time due to they rely carefully on downfield throws and DeAndre Hopkins' phenomenal plays. If Invoice O'Brien can procure a balance by getting Deshaun Watson difficult within the breeze game, the Texans will withhold their very have.
Philadelphia Eagles/Seattle Seahawks: These two groups are grouped together due to their offenses depend totally on the play of their respective quarterbacks. The Eagles beget lost so many skill-discipline gamers this season that scout-workforce guys are suiting up as starters. Carson Wentz has been the incompatibility-maker, organising/extending ample plays to present Philly a possibility to utilize. Identical narrative with the Seahawks. They had been playing lights out within the main half of of the season, but the 'Hawks are rather depleted heading into Wild Card Weekend. This unit relies on Russell Wilson's phenomenal ability to rep a play on each drive. It would not topic what down-and-distance he faces -- Wilson is a magician and can repeatedly give his workforce a possibility.
Each week within the 2019 marketing campaign, feeble No. 1 overall capture and NFL Network analyst David Carr will secure a see at all offensive gamers and defective his high 15. Rankings are primarily based totally on this season's efforts. Now, let's rep to it -- the tip-of-season pecking philosophize is beneath.
NOTE: Arrows replicate changes from final week's rankings.
Protected to claim Jackson's first plump season because the starter in Baltimore did not disappoint. Mechanically throwing and running at some stage in defenses -- ending sixth within the league in rushing yards(!) -- the 2d-365 days quarterback made the Ravens one among the most delightful offenses to peer this season. To be pretty, Jackson's out of the ordinary marketing campaign appears to be like to beget all people already forgetting about Patrick Mahomes' magical 2018 season. That's how abundant it was.
Teach hiya to your Offensive Player of the 365 days. McCaffrey had a season for the ages by changing into the third player in NFL history to file 1,000 bustle yards and 1,000 receiving yards in a single season, joining Marshall Faulk (1999) and Roger Craig (1985). He carried out 2019 with the third-most scrimmage yards (2,392) in a single season, as effectively. There shall be rather about a change in Carolina this offseason, but one tell's for optimistic: This offense will fabricate around the celebrity running motivate.
Thomas carried out his file-breaking 2019 marketing campaign with a season-low four receptions in Sunday's utilize over Tennessee, but that does not secure anything else a long way from what he carried out. He logged 149 catches this season. That's 33 extra than the following player (Christian McCaffrey) and 45 extra than the following-closest receiver (Keenan Allen). The Saints knew they had been making the categorical replacement by extending their No. 1 receiver with a 5-365 days, $100 million extension motivate in July.
In Sunday's loss to the 49ers, the Seahawks had been shut out within the main half of for the main time since Week 15 of 2017. Fortuitously, the 2d half of was a special narrative for Seattle. Russell Wilson led a giant comeback by scoring 21 aspects and he was thisclose to 6 extra that might beget obtained Seattle not most attention-grabbing the game but the division. I beget the thought that Wilson and the Seahawks can arrive out of Philadelphia with a utilize on Sunday evening, but the quarterback's going to beget to play better than he has at some stage in unheard of of the 2d half of of the season. He's logged most attention-grabbing one game with a 100-plus passer score in his final seven outings (after doing so in eight of his first 9 games of the season). For the Seahawks to rep a most principal postseason push, he must return to MVP originate.
Or not it has been an eventful 365 days for Brees, to claim the least. From undergoing thumb surgical operation motivate in September to breaking Peyton Manning's all-time touchdown stir file about a weeks within the past, Brees' 14th marketing campaign with the Saints has been anything else but well-liked. The outmoded quarterback has now led the league in completion percentage in every of the final three seasons, completing 74.3 of his passes this season (0.1% timid of tying his NFL file from final season). Brees has the Saints' offense playing at its most efficient heading into Wild Card Weekend, with Glossy Orleans averaging 40 aspects over the past four games.
A 365 days after George Kittle edged Kelce for the NFL file for many receiving yards in a season, Kelce carried out the season because the head tight consequence within the league. He did not spoil Kittle's file, but the Chiefs TE did elevate out within the head 5 in receiving yards (fourth with 1,229 yards), the correct tight discontinue to withhold out so within the final decade. Salvage Gronkowski was the outdated high (sixth) in 2011.
If Kelce is 1A in the case of tight ends, then Kittle is 1B. He carried out 2019 along with his 2d-straight 1,000-yard receiving season, but extra spectacular is the very fact that he compelled 19 left out tackles on receptions (most among tight ends this season), in step with Pro Soccer Focal point. He's an absolute beast as a blocker and surely does his segment within the passing game. I'm able to not wait to witness the Kittle postseason conceal.
Henry wished 166 bustle yards in opposition to the Texans to stir Prick Chubb for the league rushing title. He did that and extra, racking up 211 bustle yards and lifting Tennessee into the postseason. With the most effective design Henry has carried out in 2019, I are not in the slightest degree bowled over if the Titans stir into Foxborough and beat the Glossy England Patriots on Saturday night time.
Jones is one among the most principal reasons the Inexperienced Bay Packers beget 13 wins and a most principal-spherical bye. The third-365 days running motivate totaled a whopping 19 touchdowns (16 rushing) for the Packers' offense this season and saved a ton of drives going when Aaron Rodgers and his receivers struggled with timing. Jones has been one among the most attention-grabbing surprises of the 2019 season in the case of the running motivate discipline, and he'll beget to withhold that level of play if Inexperienced Bay wants to bring another Lombardi motivate to Titletown.
The Cowboys had one among the extra disappointing seasons of any workforce within the league. With so unheard of skill on either aspect of the ball, it was shiny surprising that it never rather came together. Zeke was all as soon as more the most spectacular segment of the offense. In Sunday's utilize over Washington, Zeke had his seventh game this season with at least 100 bustle yards (tied for many within the NFL) and he carried out fourth within the league with 1,357 yards on the ground. Since he came into the league in 2016, Elliott leads the NFL in scrimmage yards (7,024), bustle yards (5,405) and scrimmage yards per game (125.4). Or not it's puzzling that a workforce with a player of this caliber -- and oodles of skill around him -- did not rep the playoffs all as soon as more.
Cook hasn't carried out a single snap since Week 15, but that's exactly the reason he lands at No. 12 in my final rankings. Outdated to his shoulder rupture that sidelined him unhurried within the season, Cook dominated defenses as a elevate out-it-all motivate for the Vikings. Without Cook (who had 14 whole TDs this season) on the discipline in Week 16 with the division on the motorway, the Vikings couldn't retain a drive if their lives depended on it. Cook's value has long past up all season long, but hit its peak in that Week 16 game.
Godwin rewarded all of his delusion soccer backers with a monster 2019 season. In 14 games, the third-365 days wideout racked up 1,333 receiving yards and 9 TDs on 86 receptions to withhold out third in receiving yards at the motivate of Michael Thomas and Julio Jones. The NFC South optimistic is conscious of easy methods to draft receivers.
A 1,400-yard season has change into well-liked for Julio, which is wild, brooding about rather about a receivers are correct attempting to sniff 1,000. But Jones carried out 6 yards timid of his sixth-straight 1,400-yard receiving season and one take timid of 100 for the 365 days. If that does not sum up the Falcons' 2019 marketing campaign, I originate not know what does. Request Jones and the Falcons to arrive motivate out firing subsequent plunge after a disappointing 2019 for Atlanta.
Like I famed final week, Golladay leads the NFL in receiving touchdowns with 11. For a man who's carried out with three quarterbacks this season, Golladay deserves some love for his growth and what he's completed in 365 days 3.
Dropped out: Deshaun Watson, QB, Texans (previously No. 8); Prick Chubb, RB, Browns (No. 11); Alvin Kamara, RB, Saints (No. 12); Aaron Rodgers, QB, Packers (No. 14).
JUST OUTSIDE THE TOP 15
Prick Chubb, RB, Cleveland Browns: Chubb couldn't hold on to the league rushing title after Derrick Henry rushed for 211 yards within the season-finale, but Chubb solidified himself because the Browns' beginning running motivate for years to arrive motivate along with his 2019 marketing campaign. He might presumably well maybe not beget obtained the rushing title, but 1,454 bustle yards in a season will not be always anything else to hold your head about.
Aaron Rodgers, QB, Inexperienced Bay Packers: Rodgers was a long way from his most efficient, but props to the Detroit Lions for stalling the Packers' offense for many of Sunday's season-finale. He carried out not as much as half of of his 55 stir makes an attempt and threw a capture within the game, but he also orchestrated two scoring drives within the fourth quarter to relieve score a most principal-spherical bye. This has been such an up-and-down season for Rodgers, but he repeatedly appears to be like to arrive motivate up take hold of when the Packers want him most.

14. Who is your favorite director? Why?

19. What part of filmmaking do you find most interesting (ie. sound design, costuming, set design, etc)?
the thing that strikes me first is the writing itself, i'm a quite verbally-oriented person, so even though film is such a visual medium i don't think i prioritize the visual as much as others do. i also find sound design so interesting, want to learn more about it and the theory behind it

Fantasy RB Rankings Week 4: Who to start, sit at running back in fantasy football
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fantasy football owners should be used to running backs getting injured, but it never gets any easier. No. 1 pick Christian McCaffrey is the latest casualty, and it's safe to say he's conspicuous by his absence in our Week 4 fantasy RB rankings. Of course, when one back goes down, another gets an opportunity, and all eyes will be on Chuba Hubbard as he tries to graduate from mere handcuff to breakout.  Of course, Hubbard isn't the only sleeper this week. There are plenty of matchups that other backs should be able to exploit, including whoever starts for the 49ers (vs. Seahawks), Zack Moss (vs. Texans), Kenneth Gainwell (vs. Chiefs), and Peyton Barber (@ Chargers) if Josh Jacobs (ankle, toe) is out again. WEEK 4 STANDARD RANKINGS: Quarterback | Wide receiver | Tight end | D/ST | KickerThose aren't the main attractions, though -- those are merely flex backs you might have to start if you've been getting hit by the injury bug. The top backs are still sorting themselves out, as uneven performances have been common early in the season from even some of the biggest names. Fantasy owners are still trying to figure out who they can count on, and while you're not going to give up on guys like Saquon Barkley (vs. Saints), Jonathan Taylor (@ Dolphins), and Ezekiel Elliott (vs. Panthers) just yet, you might be getting close with David Montgomery (vs. Lions) and Myles Gaskin (vs. Colts). WEEK 4 PPR RANKINGS: Quarterback | Running back | Wide receiver | Tight end | D/ST | KickerThe good news with those guys is they're not in committees (yet). However, there are still plenty of annoying timeshares causing start 'em, sit 'em headaches every week. The Broncos (vs. Ravens), Bucs (@ Patriots), Ravens (@ Broncos), Cardinals (@ Rams), and Jets (vs. Titans) are some of the most difficult to navigate, especially in weeks in which they have bad matchups. That would apply to the Bucs, Ravens, and Cardinals this week. and it's tough to recommend starting any in standard leagues. The Ravens are a total mess for fantasy owners, and Leonard Fournette and Chase Edmonds figure to be better suited for PPR leagues. The Bucs have a good enough offense that Fournette or Ronald Jones II are always candidates for short TDs, but against the Pats, they're tough to trust. A few other backs are in tough spots this week. Mark Ingram (@ Bills), Damien Harris (vs. Bucs), Darrell Henderson/Sony Michel (vs. Cardinals), and Mike Davis/Cordarrelle Patterson (vs. Washington) all have statistically neutral or unfavorable matchups. We're not too worried about whoever starts for the Rams against the Cardinals, but Ingram and Harris are risky in any format, while Davis and Patterson are also better situated for at least half-PPR setups.About the only thing we know with RB is that there will continue to be injuries. It's an unfortunate fact with this position more than any other. The best you can do is stock up on backups, try to keep a high waiver claim, and get the most out of the guys on your roster. That starts with examining the matchups and usage trends more closely now that we're getting a large sample size. We'll be here to help along the way.Note: We'll be updating these RB rankings as needed throughout the week. so check back for the latest changes.

If Eagles are to get respectable, they must get wins now
New Post has been published on https://www.articletec.com/if-eagles-are-to-get-respectable-they-must-get-wins-now/
If Eagles are to get respectable, they must get wins now
Enough of this.
If the Eagles are going to make a respectable showing after their first Super Bowl title, it’s time to do so. They have lost three of their past four, turn over the ball too often, and can’t make big defensive stops.
They are heavily injured physically and, perhaps psychologically, by a 4-6 record as they host the New York Giants (3-7) on Sunday.
“It’s uncharted territory a little bit,” coach Doug Pederson says. “I think the guys have really handled it well. They’re disappointed, they’re frustrated, quite frankly, as we all are. We haven’t played up to the caliber that we’re capable of playing.
“Nobody is going to feel sorry for us, and we’re not going to do the same. We just have to come to work ready and practice, and prepare, and as they say, try to go 1-0 each week.”
Six weeks of 1-0 might be good enough to win the NFC East, in which they trail Washington by two games and Dallas by one. The Eagles have two games left with the Redskins and one with the Cowboys, to whom they have lost in Philly.
New York has won two in a row to temporarily quiet the social media and tabloid complaints about Eli Manning. The veteran quarterback has proven that given some time to throw – the O-line has vastly improved the past two weeks – he still can produce. And he has talented teammates in Saquon Barkley, Odell Beckham Jr., Evan Engram and Sterling Shepard.
“I think we’re running the ball better than we did, so I feel like we’re playing better football, but we got to continue doing that,” Manning says. “They’re a good team, they’re a good defense, they got a good front four and they’re a little banged-up in the secondary, but they’ll have a good plan and we just got to go execute.”
The weekend began with the Thanksgiving Day tripleheader.
At New Orleans, Drew Brees threw four touchdown passes to inexperienced receivers and the Saints (10-1) won their 10th straight game with a 31-17 victory over Atlanta (4-7) that eliminated the Falcons from contention in the NFC South.
At Dallas, Amari Cooper had a 90-yard touchdown catch while finishing with 180 yards receiving and two scores and Dallas pulled even with Washington atop the NFC East at 6-5 with a 31-23 Thanksgiving victory over the Redskins.
At Detroit, Chase Daniel set career highs with 230 yards passing and two touchdowns to keep Chicago (8-3) rolling with a 23-16 win over the Lions (4-7).
Off this week are the Chiefs and Rams, the final byes of the season. They are probably exhausted after that 54-51 Monday night affair in which Los Angeles improved to 10-1 and Kansas City fell to 9-2.
Seattle (5-5) at Carolina (6-4)
The winner here could place itself in strong position for a wild card. Neither the Seahawks nor Panthers figure to catch their division leaders, the Rams and Saints, respectively. A Seahawks loss clinches the NFC West for LA.
Carolina has lost two straight in entirely different manners, a blowout at the hands of Pittsburgh and then a one-point defeat at Detroit when a 2-point conversion failed .
Both teams will want to run the ball; Seattle leads the league in yards on the ground despite not having a standout running back.
Tennessee (5-5) at Houston (7-3), Monday night
Not only are the Texans, winners of seven in a row, in charge of the AFC South, they’ve become a factor for a potential playoff bye. They’ll need to keep up the excellent work on both sides of the ball.
J.J. Watt has made an impressive comeback from basically two wasted seasons with 10 sacks and a seemingly non-stop presence around the ball. He could be particularly destructive if the Titans need to play Blaine Gabbert for the injured starting QB, Marcus Mariota.
The Titans have been maddeningly inconsistent. They dominate New England, then get blown out at Indianapolis. This is a rare difficult matchup for the rest of their schedule.
Pittsburgh (7-2-1) at Denver (4-6)
A sign of a contender is playing poorly – very poorly at times – and still winning. The Steelers did that last week at Jacksonville, a game that could catapult them to bigger things in a division they already control.
Antonio Brown is tied for the league lead with 11 touchdown receptions and has at least one touchdown catch in eight consecutive games. With a TD reception on Sunday, Brown would tie Hall of Famer Lance Alworth (in 1963) and A.J. Green (in 2012) for the third-longest streak of games with a touchdown catch in a single season. Jerry Rice has the mark with 12 in 1987.
Denver comes off a stirring comeback victory at the Chargers and linebacker Von Miller comes off another one of his dominant performances with a key interception and his 100th sack.
Miami (5-5) at Indianapolis (5-5)
A pair of .500 teams headed in opposite directions.
The Dolphins are reeling, coming off a bye after losses in three of four, but expect to have starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill back from a shoulder injury. The Miami offense has gone nine quarters without a touchdown.
Indy is one of the NFL’s hottest teams with four consecutive victories. Andrew Luck has thrown a TD pass in a league-high 33 straight games, and at least three TD passes in seven straight, tying Dan Marino for the third-longest streak in NFL history. Luck can tie Peyton Manning (eight) for No. 2 against Miami.
He also has not been sacked since Oct. 4, a career-best 214 attempts. That five-game string without a sack is tied for third longest since 1982.
Green Bay (4-5-1) at Minnesota (5-4-1)
Yet another prime-time appearance for the Vikings, who are 0-3 at night. Both teams are chasing the Bears, of course, and have wild-card aspirations, too.
If Minnesota doesn’t find a ground game, it’s likely doomed to being home in January; it ranks 31st. Green Bay allowed 173 rushing yards to the Seahawks last week.
Green Bay doesn’t have that problem. Aaron Jones, who missed the early season tie between these clubs while suspended, has 342 rushing yards and four TDs in the past four games, plus 12 receptions for 100 yards and one TD. Jones leads the league with 6.4 yards per rush.
But the Packers have lost seven straight regular-season road games since winning in overtime at Cleveland last Dec. 10.
New England (7-3) at New York Jets (3-7)
Just what the spiraling Jets need: Tom Brady and the very annoyed Patriots making a visit.
New England played poorly at Tennessee before its bye, but wasn’t within light years of how badly the Jets performed in their loss to Buffalo. While the Patriots are on pace for their one-millionth straight AFC East title (actually their 10th), the heat on Jets coach Todd Bowles has intensified. New York has lost four in a row and has beaten New England once in the past eight tries.
Brady needs 147 passing yards and four touchdown passes to surpass Peyton Manning (79,279 passing yards and 579 touchdown passes) for the most in each category in NFL history, including the postseason.
Jacksonville (3-7) at Buffalo (3-7)
The Jaguars had a chance to turn around their disappointing season when they led Pittsburgh 16-0 last week. They folded, and now the questions intensify about the security of the coaching staff and quarterback Blake Bortles.
Still, though Jacksonville has dropped six in a row, it’s remaining schedule is anything but difficult. To not make some sort of turnaround would be inexcusable.
One thing worth noting about the Bills: They keep coming at you, despite perhaps the least-talented offensive roster in the league. Their defense makes them competitive.
Arizona (2-8) at Los Angeles Chargers (7-3)
The Chargers blew a chance to be tied for the AFC West lead with some suspect play calls and play-not-to-lose mentality late against Denver. Still, they are in excellent shape for a playoff berth, particularly if Philip Rivers makes better decisions with a game on the line.
Rivers has 23 touchdown passes and has thrown for at least 25 in 10 consecutive seasons. He needs two TD throws to tie former teammate Drew Brees for the second-longest streak. Peyton Manning had 13.
Like LA, the Cardinals come off a late-game fold, against Oakland.
Oakland (2-8) at Baltimore (5-5)
With Joe Flacco sidelined against Cincinnati, first-round pick Lamar Jackson brought a running game to the QB position, something Flacco won’t be doing when he returns.
The Ravens rushed for 265 yards as Jackson ran 27 times for 117 yards, Gus Edwards had 115 yards on the ground and both rookies rushed for seven first downs.
“Oh, he had 27 carries,” coach John Harbaugh said. “You know what he did? He won the game. He played his tail off. Celebrate that, and move on.”
The Raiders hadn’t celebrated a victory since Sept. 30. They ranked 31st in run defense, so another win here seems unlikely.
Cleveland (3-6-1) at Cincinnati (5-5)
The Bengals have been ravaged by injuries and seem headed for yet another disappointing season. But a win Sunday would keep them in the wild-card chase.
Neither team plays much defense, so while this won’t be Chiefs-Rams, it could keep the scoreboard lit.
San Francisco (2-8) at Tampa Bay (3-7)
Not much to recommend here.
Bucs receiver Mike Evans has 957 yards receiving and can join Hall of Famer Randy Moss (six consecutive seasons) and A.J. Green (five) as the only players in NFL history with at least 1,000 receiving yards in each of their first five seasons. He figures to get it against the 49ers whether Jameis Winston returns to starting duty at quarterback or Ryan Fitzpatrick goes.

Best Young Quarterbacks of 2017
Here is a list of the top 5 quarterbacks to be drafted in the last 5 seasons (2013-2017). These are players that have proved their worth with their arms, legs, or both since the 2013 season. This is my opinion entirely and can be judged on consistency over the past 5 years, or new players that have only been in a little but show that they are going somewhere.
#5- Dak Prescott
The next big thing for the cowboys, he and Ezekiel Elliot had a magical first season as rookie team leaders. Though a Super Bowl would have been amazing, a 13-3 season was a great start for a team in the ever competitive NFC East. Through Dak’s first season, he set the record for highest rookie passer rating (105.7), also tying Aaron Rodgers for 37th highest passer rating in a season all time. Along with that, he finished with 3,667 passing yards, 6th most as a rookie behind Peyton Manning’s record that stood from 1998-2011. Dak’s second year wasn’t great. In 2017 he is 19th in passing yards, 13th in completion percentage, 26th in interception percentage, and 17th in passer rating. The Cowboys’ 9-7 record was far from best, being two games back from a wildcard spot and 4 games back in the division, the ‘Boys aren’t in a great place. Despite below average play in 2017, Dak had a solid first two and kept his team in contention until week 16, which leaves his at #5 on my list.
#4-Marcus Mariota
Mariota’s blazing speed gives him an edge in these rankings. His 40 yard dash time of 4.50 is the best we’ve seen from an active qb, beating the next best by .11 and beating the all time QB rushing leader, Cam Newton, by .19. While he only has 996 rushing yards through 44 games, his speed makes him dangerous. Mariota has a rushing first down percentage of 32.1% career and 35.1% this season, which shows how deadly his ability to extend drives can be. His passing stats have not been great, with 9,476 career passing yards through 3 seasons, though he is improving greatly each season. Mariota has led his team to contend for the playoffs in the last two seasons, having a 18-14 record in that period.
#3-Jared Goff
After a disappointing 4-12 record with the recently relocated Los Angeles Rams, 2016 first overall pick Jared Goff has improved greatly in his second year. His 0-7 record as a starter in 2016 has risen to 11-4 in 2017. The Rams were one of the hottest teams this season, and though there are many reasons why they have improved so dramatically, Goff has no doubt been a factor. In 2017, Goff’s 100.5 passer rating and 253.6 yards per game have placed the Rams at 3rd in the NFC this season, and put them atop the NFC West for the first time since 2003. This was one of the most exciting teams to watch this season, and looks to be a hot team for seasons to come.
#2-Derek Carr
One of the more interesting QBs since he came into the league, Carr turned his team around completely in 2016. Injury has killed a lot of the work he has done for the Raiders since 2014. Getting hurt in week 16 in 2016 with an AFC West leading 12-3 record was unfortuate and caused the end of the Raiders’ playoff drought to mean nothing. A 2017 back injury kept him out a game and contributed to low level play for several more games. Carr has had good passing stats so far, with a 87.5 passer rating, 236.9 passing yards per game, a 103:44 TD-INT ratio, and a 28-34 record as a starter, which is dragged down by his 3-13 rookie season. Carr has proved himself to be consistent and deserving of a starting role. If his defense comes together and the offense stays healthy, we are likely to see Carr and the Raiders compete for AFC dominance for at least the next decade.
Honorable Mentions
-Blake Bortles
Good quarterback in a surprisingly strong AFC South. As the 3rd best team in the AFC, the Jaguars have finally caught a break and seem to be reaching for it this year. Bortles’ completion percentage has never reached higher than 58.9% in a season until 2016 where he achieved an underwhelming 60.2%. His only 4000 yard season also came with a league leading 18 interceptions. His 90-64 TD-INT ratio is painful for Jags fans, but at least that defense is good enough to make up for it.
-Jameis Winston
Having a very fiery competitive attitude is great for any player on the field, especially QBs, and Winston has that. This gets the best of him at times, which is an issue, but Winston shows that he can play at a level high enough to allow his team to win. A season at 4th in the best division was certainly disappointing after the 9-7 team just short of the playoffs just last year. We’ll see what he can do in 2018.
-Deshaun Watson
After leading the NFL in several QB categories after only a few played games, Deshaun Watson and his red hot Texans look to have simmered down completely. Watson put up an admirable fight against Tom Brady, narrowly losing 36-33 in the greatest performance by a rookie QB we’ve seen against Belichick’s Patriots. An ACL tear during practice left Watson out for the season after going 3-3 as a starter, with all 3 losses coming against teams who were very hot in the early season. The Texans were left out to dry in the surprisingly strong AFC South and finished 4-12. Watson finished #1 in touchdowns and #3 in passing yards among rookies.
-Jimmy Garoppolo
If he started more than 7 career games, he almost certainly would be put at #1 on this list. Since his 2014 introduction, he’s started 7 games and is a perfect 7-0. His career completion percentage is 67.3%, which would rank #1 all time if he had enough attempts. His 2017 5 game starting span to end the season was certainly one of the better starts that we have seen, putting up 260 yards per game, though a 7-5 TD-INT is less than impressive. Possibly the most exciting quarterback looking head to 2018.
#1-Carson Wentz
Leading the 2016 draft class in passing yards, then placing 1st in passing TDs in 2017 until week 17 after missing the final 3 games, Carson Wentz started off his career strong and continued that into one of the top sophomore seasons we’ve seen from a QB. Without playoff magician Nick Foles as their backup, the 11-2 Eagles after a Wentz ACL tear would have likely finished 11-5 and been one and done in the playoffs. Wentz led their team to a 4 way tie for the best record in the league at 13-3 and leaves the league waiting to see what Wentz can do in the years to come.
