Took a year but finally

The Swedish Football Association and Adidas have a long history together. After ten years with Umbro, the association changed back to Adidas in 2013, and then the agreement 2018 was extended to over until 2024.

The brand giant benefits from the fact that the Swedish national team is once and again qualifying for great championships - but on the other hand it is less positive for Adidas that the majority of the players in the Swedish European Championship squad chooses to represent competitors Puma and Nike.

In this year's European Championship team, only nine out of 23 players cooperate with the association's sponsor Adidas.

I have Adidas, and I like them well," says Sofia Jakobsson and continues:

I've had them for many years now and I've been very happy with them. I can't see myself in any other mark than Adidas. I'm an Adidas girl.

Given that interest is increasing in women's football and more money is coming in. Have Nike or Puma, for example, tried to lure you?

No, they don't, but I think it's pretty visible that I'm staying with Adidas. I've also signed a new contract with them, so I'm happy with them.

Two years ago, Puma invested in a whole new shoe, only made for women, and today the company sponsors nine players in the Swedish European Championship squad.

"I have had them for a lot of years now and I like it very well with their models and have felt that it is a football shoe that has suit me, so I am very happy and satisfied with the shoes that I have," says Jonna Andersson.

No, it's more that when it's national team collections, it's Adidas that counts, except shoes. In addition to that, you have to have that deal that you have in your spare time.

I like my Puma shoes. Today it is very much about color and very light shoes, I would have wanted to wish overall that they thought much more about the fit and the comfort itself and so. But the times look different.

What did it look like in the past?

It was ham shoes. I believe that all this development has been so fast. Today they should be easy and you should barely notice that you have shoes on you and you should not be happy to wear snow either so it is quick to put them on. But I liked the times of ham shoes.

Magdalena Eriksson recently changed the sponsor from Puma to Nike and talks about the elections.

My contract with Puma had expired and I had had Puma for a long time and was very satisfied with them, but felt that I wanted to examine a different brand and then Nike came and was very interested. Nike has always been my favorite brand I think they have really nice stuff and very good shoes above all, so it was fun that they were interested. That's when it was Nike.

What's it like to go with three lines on your shirt when you're a Nike player?

- As long as there's a Sweden brand up there, I love wearing these clothes.

Although the traders compete for the players, Sofia Jakobsson believes that there is not much talk in the group about which shoes are best.

I think everyone thinks their best, whether you have Puma, Nike or Adidas. There's a lot of talk about what kind of contract with shoes. Then you sometimes say, "nice color," about some shoe, but otherwise there's not much talk about the shoes.

“Casina Rossa”, così si chiamava il rustico dei sogni della “nera” Santanchè, nel bosco della Versiliana. Quando ci arrivi davanti, una siepe alta e fitta con un’anima di rete verde impedisce a chiunque di vedere all’in terno. Perfino i cancelli sono ricoperti da assi di legno che occludono la vista.

Cosa ci sia dentro lo si scopre solo dall’alto, facendo levare un drone sopra gli steccati o zoommando con google maps, cosa che chiunque può fare. E quello che un tempo era un “rudere al grezzo” – senza allaccio alle fogne, acqua e luce – si rivela per quel che è diventato: una villa di charme da 270 metri quadri con giardino, corredata di porticato con “cotto umbro” e impreziosita da una splendida veranda addossata stile inglese, tanto glamour per il tè del tramonto.

“Lorenzo Mazzaro” si legge sul citofono. Nessuno risponde. Per tutti a Pietrasanta non è la casa del figlio, bensì di Daniela Santanchè, la regina degli affari, della politica e delle estati chic e felici nella rivieratoscana.

Per anni l’esponente di Fratelli d’Italia ne ha affittata un’altra, nella zona di Roma Imperiale, finché nel 2014 mette gli occhi su un rustico nel cuore del parco pubblico, epicentro dell’attività turistica e culturale di una delle località più rinomate e lussuose della riviera, tra Marina di Pietrasanta e Forte dei Marmi. Dieci minuti a piedi dal famoso “Twiga”, di cui Daniela Santanchè è stata socia finché ha ceduto le quote al compagno Dimitri Kunz, altri dieci dalla famosa “Villa Alberoni”, quella che nel giro di un’ora fruttò a Kunz e alla moglie di La Russa la plusvalenza record.

La stessa Meloni vi ha soggiornato più volte, come tanti politici, artisti e intellettuali di destra che si raccolgono d’estate attorno ai lidi e al Caffè della Versiliana, la terza Camera agostana d’un tempo.

C’è solo un problema: le importanti opere che l’hanno resa la bomboniera che è, incensata dalla stessa Santanchè nella sua rivista Villa e Giardini dell ’agosto 2016, al Comune di Pietrasanta risultano realizzate senza autorizzazione paesaggistica. E la storia prende una strana piega, quella della Ministra del Turismo con villa abusiva nel Parco pubblico della. Versiliana. E di nove tentativi di sanare “l’abuso oltre la siepe”, appesi ora alla sanatoria annunciata dal suo collega Salvini. Degli accertamenti e degli abusi, che han portato anche a un procedimento penale, non si era mai avuta notizia. Tantomeno di ordini di demolizione, come prevederebbe la legge.

PER CAPIRCI qualcosa tocca affondare nelle pratiche dello Sportello unico per l’edilizia di Pietrasanta. Da lì ne saltano fuori 11, tutte intestate a Lorenzo Mazzaro, anche se molti elementi fanno pensare sia l’intestatario fittizio della proprietà. Nel preliminare firmato il 28 febbraio 2014 a Milano, quando era ancora minorenne, si legge: “La signora Daniela Garnero Santanchè si riserva di nominare un terzo acquirente finale dei beni, il signor Lorenzo Mazzaro, che accettatale nomina”.

Il rogito avviene il 17 aprile 2014, due giorni dopo che Lorenzo è diventato maggiorenne, con acquisto dell’immobile in costruzione “al rustico”: niente acqua luce e fognature, pavimenti, scale, inferriate, recinzioni o finestre. Il giorno dopo inizia “il ballo del mattone”.

Il 18 aprile 2014 un geometra di Firenze, Simone Banchi, presenta un permesso per “modifiche interne, senza opere strutturali”, che viene accolto. Il problema, infatti, è quel che la proprietà intende realizzare all’esterno.

Il 2 maggio 2014 un geometra locale, Giuseppe Del Carlo, deposita a nome di Mazzaro un progetto dal titolo ampio: “Ristrutturazione edilizia con modifiche interne ed esterne, rifacimento di recinzioni e nuovi ingressi pedonali e carrabile a fabbricato di civile abitazione all ’interno del Parco della Versiliana, denominato Casina Rossa”.

I rendering arrivano da uno studio di Milano. Cinque mesi dopo la pratica viene però bocciata, proprio sul fronte della paesaggistica, che viene “diniegata” il 30 settembre 2014.

E tuttavia la proprietà costruisce quel che desidera: il 17 novembre 2014 il progettista Banchi protocolla in Comune una richiesta di accertamento di “opere eseguite in assenza di autorizzazione paesaggistica” indicando, tra le altre, “modifiche al tetto e al comignolo, costruzione di pergolati e pavimentazioni esterne, nuovi ingressi pedonali, abbassamento del piano di calpestio al piano terra”.

Anche questa pratica risulta però cassata il 13 luglio 2015. La proprietà non demorde: tra il 2014 e il 2017, saranno in tutto nove i tentativi di sanare quel che forse sanabile non era, in parte per il contesto tutelato, in parte (probabilmente) per il mancato rispetto delle distanze dei nuovi “corpi” realizzati dal corso del “Fiumetto” e dalla strada comunale.

L’ultimo tentativo risale al 30 giugno 2017. Il geometra Banchi, sotto sua responsabilità, quel giorno attesta sia la conformità in sanatoria e sia la compatibilità paesaggistica, pratica che risulta poi “chiusa da ufficio”, non “rilasciata”. Negli uffici tecnici del circondario, tutti concordano: è stata archiviata, non approvata.

[…] LORENZO Mazzaro non risponde al citofono. Avvertito via telefono, neppure a quello. Dalla carte risulta risiedere proprio lì, e lo rivela anche la pratica di mutuo che il Fatto ha potuto consultare: 18enne da due giorni, il figlio della futura ministra ha immediatamente ottenuto da Banca Mediolanum un mutuo “fondiario ipotecario” da 750 mila euro da restituire in 25 anni garantito da un fideiussore (non indicato nell’atto) per 1,5 milioni.

Mazzaro dichiara che trattasi di “acquisto abitazione”, e pertanto soggetto al pagamento dell’imposta sostitutiva dello 0,25%, “in luogo delle imposte di registro, di bollo, ipotecarie e delle tasse su concessioni governative”. Naturalmente l’acquisto come “prima casa” gli permette anche successivamente notevoli risparmi sui contratti per le varie utenze e soprattutto di non pagare l’Imu. Peccato che all’epoca […] studiasse in Inghilterra.

Il Comandante dei Vigili di Pietrasanta Giovanni Fiori conferma: a seguito di controlli la residenza fu negata due volte e contestualmente “l’esito degli accertamenti di natura edilizia furono rimessi all’autorità giudiziaria, ma l’esito a me non è noto”.

La vicenda […] può imbarazzare la stessa Giorgia Meloni che nella villa è stata più volte ospite. Ad esempio il 4 agosto 2022, quando alla Versiliana presentò il suo libro Io sono Giorgia. Lei, il compagno e la figlia Ginevra furono inghiottiti dalla siepe.

E vai a sapere se è la stessa Giorgia che invocava le dimissioni della ministra del Pd Josefa Idem per presunti abusi edilizi e dell’Ici. Nel caso della “sua ” ministra, se confermati, sono avvenuti non in una palestra privata ma all’interno di un parco pubblico tutelato dagli anni Settanta, una sorta di “sacrario verde” inviolabile perfino all’amministrazione cittadina […]

An Incredibly Silly Controversy on a Very Normal Island

Football, by which I mean Association Football, is a big deal in England [citation not needed].

And the national team has a new Home Kit out!

It looks like this:

It is, somehow, controversial (at least, with politicians), if decidedy not the biggest of the big stories even as I write this.

That controversy is not because of the weird band at the bottom of the shorts, which is both ugly and bizarre (it... doesn't go all the way round?!), but because of this detail on the back of the shirt.

It's sort of a St George's cross (the flag of England, specifically), but not, because of the coloured banding and also it not having a white background.

This choice for that, over sticking the flag on the collar and calling it a day, was made because, apparently, the three varying shades of red, and also each of the individual colours of the bi pride flag (... okay, not quite there, but I can't be the only one who sees the resemblance, right), have featured on iconic kits of England past.

A comedian disliked it, and thought it was a bit weird. (content warning: The Mirror is owned by Reach PLC and so has a borderline unusable website).

But the controversy appears to have proper kicked off [pun not originally intended], or at least gone mainstream, because of Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer being asked about it by the Sun because he's doing some sort of reader's questions gimmick with them (which is, honestly, itself way more of a problem than the flag thing), and Sir Keir taking the opportunity to signal his patriotism.

Specifically, Sir Keir said “...the flag [🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿] is used by everybody, it’s unifying, it doesn’t need to change. We just need to be proud of it. So I think they should just reconsider this and change it back.” (also: the shirt itself costs too much money to buy, and he is totally a massive football fan. Which by all accounts is actually true but he has an uncanny ability to sound like he is lying constantly.).

With that, the Prime Minister, whose entire political strategy has consisted of culture warring to not particularly impressive effect, also felt compelled to weigh in, also talking about the sacred immutability and pride in the flag.

As of 5pm on Friday 22nd March 2024, there are no plans to change the shirt [outside of the usual new shirt schedule, obviously], and it has the Football Association's full support.

The punchline

So, with all that hot air, the need to change 'back' the flag n'all, you'd think that there'd been a rich history of the unaltered St George's Cross flag [England ver.] on the back and/or front of kits, right? Beyond white being the default home kit colour and red a fairly common pick for away?

But. Well.

This is actually the first time since 2018 that there's been anything resembling a St George's cross on the kit.

If we just look at the past decade:

Neither the 2022 kit[s], nor the 2020 kit, nor the 2021 special kit for the 2020 Euros finals had the flag itself on. At all.

2018's Home kit did, (as I just said) but then the away kit had, and I quote "a modern St. George’s Cross." design all across the front. That is to say [gasp] a modified flag.

Anyway, 2016 also seems not to have had a flag, settling for the word "England" on the back of both kits.

2014 is in the zone where I'm stuck looking at eBay listings for a shot of the back of both home and away kits (so no more links alas), but, again, no flag on the home, and the same "modern" variant on the front of the away.

So in the last decade, there has been a regular St George's cross on an England outfield football kit precisely once.

But, just for fun, let's go a few more iterations back.

2013, first Nike kit, "150th anniversary" of England having a national football team, and no flag on either kit.

2012, last Umbro kit, no flag on the home, and I have hit my limit on how hard I'm willing to search to check the away's collar to be absolutely sure that there isn't an iron-on flag or something. But also, I really have to give shout-outs to the red-on-red crosses on the Home Goalkeeper kit, and blue-on blue for the away GK kit.

And, finally, 2011, a year when both outfield kits have flags on. But not the 'standard' one in either case. Specifically, Umbro gave us a home kit with a bunch of comically tiny multicoloured flags for ants, and an away kit with varying shades of blue cross on the collar. This was not controversial at the time - or at least an attempt to find evidence instead finds controversy over the contemporaneous rugby kit (and also the present thing I am writing about).

Though actually the home kit really should have been because, seriously, my god what is with this:

Remember: Football shirts are designed to be visible from somewhat far away, and not require a magnifying glass to perceive a presumably important design element.

But, anyway, I'm beginning to think that the great 2024 England Kit controversy might be a bit contrived, not gonna lie.

C'est la vie, I guess.

Fake edit: oh, right. The home kit also isn't even the only England outfield kit this year with a modified flag.
