Postwar Levihan

It's been three years since the war ended. Against all odds, Hange survived & lives with Levi. They found an abandoned cabin in a remote area near Liberio, miraculously spared as well as the bunch of trees that hides it from sight.

Day after day, they fixed up their new home as best they could. It’s not much but it’s their safe, shared home & it’s all that matters.

Once settled, none of them could stay out of the action. Hange works in what remains of Liberio, in a makeshift hospital occupying the ground floor of a half-destroyed building. They help treat sick or injured people several days & nights a week.

There isn’t enough room at the hospital so they managed to set up a lab at home where they can do some research, mostly about new medications or even prosthetics. Levi stays at home most of the time, taking care of the house, growing a vegetable garden, cutting wood & planting more trees around their cabin. In his glass house, Levi enjoys raising flowers, but he also sowed medicinal herbs for Hange’s experiments. Every once in a while, he goes to Liberio to help refugees, mostly children who lost their parents during the war.

Valentine's Day

A couple weeks ago, Gabi & Falco told Levi about Valentine’s Day, a tradition unknown on Paradis Island. As much as it seemed futile at first, Levi couldn't stop mulling over the idea.

After several days of wearying work, Levi convinced Hange to rest properly for once.

Sitting on the bed next to them, he takes a few moments to gaze at Hange’s sleepy face. He finds them beautiful, despite the burns. Or maybe he loves them even more because of these scars, a testament to their bravery. He’s so grateful they’re here with him, brightening his days with their cheerful, beaming smile, the very smile he fell in love with.

Meanwhile they sleep in on their day off, he busies himself getting tea ready for breakfast, packing some food & a blanket in a basket, slicing vegetables for the stew simmering in the pot over the fire. 

Levi is waiting for Hange in the hall while they put the bouquet of snowdrops he picked for them earlier this morning in a vase. They blushed & stammered a shy thank you when he drew it from behind the basket placed on his lap.

He promised himself today would be special. Nothing fancy, but a few hours for themselves without work or chores.

Hange would push his wheelchair along the paths nearby, blabbering about their research, asking him a million questions about the garden or the herbs he grows, about the pain in his leg. From time to time, they would lean down to kiss him on the cheek, giggling like a shy teenager. They would find a nice place to spread a blanket on the grass & enjoy their picnic. They would spend the afternoon watching clouds, Levi listening with fondness to Hange’s explanations about their shapes or how they form. When the sun would start to set & the breeze to be too cold, they would go back home & take a bath to warm themselves. 

Hange would stuff their face with the most delicious stew they ever tasted. They would settle with a contented sigh & a glass of wine in front of the fireplace, snuggled up against Levi under a warm blanket.

Levi would say he's not good with words. Levi would draw a little box out of his pocket & simply give it to Hange. Levi would gently slide the jewel on Hange's finger, not a proposal but rather a promise.

The promise to spend the rest of their lives together.

You are rather intrigued when Nanami pulls a padlock out of his pocket as you walk to a crowded bridge

But your eyes quickly light up when you realise both your names are engraved in the metal. Getting closer to the railing, you find a spot to attach your "love lock" & throw the key in the river

The romantic gesture got you emotional but Nanami helps you forget your tears with a tender kiss

You know you'll travel back home with fond memories, feeling closer to each other, but for now you revel in the wonderful hours you spend together without a care in the world

"Best Valentine's Day ever?" asks one of your coworkers.

You are relaxing in the break room after a long meeting, trying to blabber tension away with your colleagues over a cup of coffee & sweets. The question takes you off guard & you almost choke on the delicious chocolate you just gobbled.

You swallow your mouthful.

"Well, yesterday I guess," you reply with a shy smile as a faint blush tints your cheeks.

You'd been dating Jean for a few years before finally getting married a couple months ago. "Honeymoon phase doesn't survive daily routine" you'd heard countless times, but nothing was less true regarding your loving husband & you in your opinion.

Jean has always been a caring, attentive boyfriend & fiancé but nothing compares to the way he makes you feel loved ever since your wedding. The man seems to spoil you more every day. Valentine's Day is no exception & you revel in the memory of yesterday.

Jean decided to take care of every one of your needs & desires. He wants you to feel how much it means to him to wake up beside you every morning. His wife. His. Forever.

He managed to convince you to take a day off & enjoy the special holiday with him.

He wakes up before you & prepares breakfast with your favourite pancakes recipe, his mother's actually. He found some strawberries, your fruit of choice, on his way home from work yesterday. They're not in season but he smiles at the thought of how delighted you'll look when you see the little bowl on the breakfast tray. He adds a bit of whipped cream on the side, a cup of tea, & everything seems perfect for his perfect wife.

Of course, he wakes you up peppering your face with soft kisses, smoothing your tousled locks out of your face with gentle strokes of his fingers. Still sleepy, you smile at him as he gazes at your features.

He tells you how cute you are with your messy bed hair. He tells you how much he loves you & how lucky he is to wake up every morning beside the most beautiful woman he has ever seen.

He cups your face & kisses you slowly, tenderly on the lips. He slips under the sheets & takes you in his arms, coaxing you into staying a little longer in bed, taking care of you in the sweetest & most pleasurable ways.

His kisses, his strokes, the words he whispers in your ear, every little thing he does leaves you flustered like a teenager, butterflies fluttering in your chest. You sense, you know he feels the same when he holds you tight, burying his face in the crook of your neck, breathing in your scent, & nothing is better than this moment of bliss.

The whole day is dedicated to you, the love of his life. Ask him anything & he happily complies. Running a warm bath, massaging you, taking you out for a walk or a boat ride on the lake near your house, preparing a delicious meal, cuddling on the couch, anything for the lady of his dreams. Anything for his princess.

He keeps the gifts simple but thoughtful. A beautiful bouquet of white tulips, those books you spotted the other day at the antique shop, your favourite macarons from the French pâtisserie in town & a piece of jewellery nicely wrapped in fabric to remind you how much he loves you.

You feel cherished, you feel spoiled, you feel loved -& you love him back so much. You can't wait to spend a lifetime beside this wonderful man. Your man. Yours.

Heart pounding in your chest & cheeks flushing pink, you snap out of the sweet memories with a soft smile.

Only to see all your coworkers' eyes fixed on you, waiting for your next words.

"Yeah, yesterday was definitely the best Valentine's Day ever!"

"Historia 'the Queen' Reiss comes out!"

The front-page headline of the Trost Times Valentine's Day issue hit her fans like a punch. After years avoiding the subject of her love life, hiding from paparazzi, dodging nosy journalists, the famous Paradis Devils lead singer finally announced that she was in love. With a girl.

The band was formed in high school by Eren Jaeger & his friends Jean Kirstein, Connie Springer & Marco Bodt. After a few disappointing concerts in seedy bars around Shiganshina, the group decided to find a female singer to boost their audience.

Historia Reiss was not only the Maria High School goddess, but she sang like an angel. The boys convinced her to be their new singer & their muse. Her looks, her voice, her charisma quickly drew a crazy amount of new admirers, worshippers driven insane by the slightest appearances of their revered 'Queen'.

From this moment on, the Paradis Devils soon became one of the most popular bands on the island, following No Name close in the charts. They played sold-out dates all around the country & beyond the walls.

Inevitably, paparazzi started to hunt them down. Their fans became more & more passionate about their private lives, discussing theories on social media. Their chemistry on stage was so obvious that most fans thought Eren & 'the Queen' were a couple, which none of them confirmed or denied, rather playing with the ambiguity of their relationship every time they were seen in public.

When Marco quit the band, he was replaced by the Titans' former drummer Ymir.

Saying that Historia & Ymir's first interactions didn't go well is an understatement. Too used to being worshipped, 'the Queen' obviously couldn't stand the other girl's stand-offish, quizzical demeanour.

In spite of all her sugar-coated words & outgoing behaviour, Historia couldn't wipe the infuriating smirk off Ymir's face. Not to mention the way she looked at her, a look that bore into her very soul, as if she knew about the dark truth behind the happy mask.

Ymir's aloof personality, her cynical take on life, her whole behaviour was an intriguing, appealing mystery to the young singer. Not being able to wrap the freckled girl around her little finger pissed Historia off more than she would admit, thus increasing her interest in the musician.

The band was now more famous than ever. Being on tour most of the time, living close together, away from family or loved ones, tensions rose between them all. Fame was taking a toll on the band. As the Paradis Devils' figurehead, Historia was deeply affected by the pressure of stardom & isolated herself more & more everyday, locked in her hotel room or wandering the streets at night, slowly sliding into sadness.

One night, after an exhausting concert abroad, loneliness hit Historia hard. As the others loudly enjoyed an afterparty with a few friends by the pool, she was sitting alone on a remote bench, hoping the starry sky, the chirping of crickets or the rose garden scent would help her forget the void she felt inside.

She startled to the tinkling noise next to her. Against all odds, Ymir had left the party with a bottle of champagne & two crystal glasses to join her. As the night & the conversation between the girls went on, Historia was amazed by how deeply Ymir understood her inner turmoils & how kind she could be. For the first time in her life, Historia forgot her loneliness & felt alive, finally.

In the dead of night, here in the quiet, secluded garden, they shared their first kiss under the stars.
