today i watched "vampires vs. the bronx". it's about a group of kids fighting against gentrification in the form of vampires! it was really fun - more comedy than horror, but still an entertaining watch. the metaphors involved were gracefully handled, being obvious and explicit while still feeling well incorporated into the story. the acting was great especially for a movie focusing on young teens. while it was a bit slow-paced and slightly predictable, it was a fun and short watch. i'd give it a 3/5 and recommend it if you liked "attack the block" and "the lost boys", and also if you have any young siblings or cousins to watch with! a real quality horror that's good for a younger audience, we need more of those ^_^

if you're looking for more movies like MBAV to watch this halloween i HIGHLY recommend Vampires Vs. The Bronx! it follows a team of teens who realize that the people who have been gentrifying their neighborhood are also bloodsuckers and it's up to them to save the Bronx from these vampires before it's too late...it's such a fun watch and an instant spooky season favorite

This September, I started watching the Amazon Prime series Harlan Coben's Shelter, starring Jaden Michael (Vampires vs. The Bronx and The Get Down). During that time, I started thinking about horror films starring Black Teenage Protagonists. Was it in any better a state than science fiction for Black teens? I've only just started my research (well, browser searches, really), and the end result of unsurprisingly similar to the state of the teen science fiction genre. The number of horror films starring Black protagonists has increased since the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s, for sure. The representation of stories has certainly gotten more and more specific, yes.  But the focus is almost always on adults or 20 twentysomethings.
So, like before: The following list is a collection of horror and thriller/mystery films that feature Black teenagers as the protagonists of stories that would typically exclude them or see them play second fiddle to white or non-Black leads.

Vampires vs The Bronx: 5/10
The core concept is heavy-handed but fine, gentrifying vampires vs plucky preteens in the Bronx. The execution just sort of feels...not lazy, exactly, but perfunctory, like it was just made to tick boxes on Netflix's corporate checklist and didn't have any authentic passion behind the project.

there’s this person on tiktok who does randomized movie watching. I decided to try that since I can never find anything to watch and netflix is too expensive to not be watched each night 😵‍💫
I landed on vampires vs the bronx and this is such a cute horror movie. it’s about 3 kids who start noticing people disappearing in their neighborhood that this real estate office is taking over. it’s fun! I love seeing movies like this with black and brown kids as the main cast.

Vampires vs. The Bronx (2020)
Tumblr media
Date Watched: 1/17/2023
Gay: 0/10. Good movie but no gay
Enjoyment: 8/10. What the Lost Boys wanted to be but without those pesky gay vampires. The kids are cute and the vampires are objectively a metaphor for race similar to Lestat in the iwtv show. It's actually a really cool movie and one of the few good Netflix originals. I enjoyed myself but it was nothing profound.
Vampires: Kinda basic honestly except that they are the only white people for metaphor reasons (and it makes them stand out really well). The communion wafers were a nice touch and I liked their themes but 4/10
No sire rule but they cannot make more vampires
Representative of 2020s? Too soon
Relative Popularity? Not advertised or talked about much

Extremely funny to me that a bunch of vampires moved to a neighborhood full of Latin American and Caribbean immigrants, aka the neighborhood with the most crucifixes per capita in probably the entire city

Fandom: Vampires vs. The Bronx
Vidder: @bironicwastaken
Music: "Kill a Hipster" by Watsky feat. Chinaka Hodge, edited
Summary: "My grandma's been preparing me for this my entire life.”
Notes: vampire-typical violence, guns, some quick cutting. The song contains violent imagery and explicit lyrics.
This vid made me check out the movie and it was as as much a delight as this fanwork promised. I can really recommend both if you like trope-y charming (light) horror centering on characters of colour.
