Happy New Year, Festividders!

We hope all your vids are progressing well - remember, you’ve got until Sunday 17 January to post your completed assignment to the collection, and you can continue to post treats and make minor edits to your assignment up until Friday 29 January, ready for when the collection goes live on Saturday 30 January.

In the meantime, there are a couple of things we wanted to mention.

First of all, it looks like Vimeo have made some changes to their settings, and it’s unfortunately no longer possible to make a vid password-protected unless you have a paid account. If you’d like to find somewhere else to host your vid, there is a list HERE of sites which allow you to embed video in an AO3 work. If you want to use Vimeo anyway, we suggest that you post your vid publicly but put as little information in the metadata as possible, to avoid it appearing in autoplay lists. We think Vimeo’s current interface means that the possibility of discovering vids there by chance is low, although of course there is still a small risk.

Secondly, we’d love to help as many Festividders as possible subtitle their vids this exchange, so we’re declaring Saturday 23 January #SubtitleSaturday! If you’d like to add subtitles to your Festivid but you’re not sure where to start, we’ll be posting a tutorial, hosting a video co-subtitling session and running sprints on Twitter to help you get started.

Festivids happened! I nearly forgot to check this year, and accidentally tripped over it again, and here are a grab bag of things that made me happy:

Body Talks (Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers)

Okay, so the Astaire & Rogers vids are my immediate favourites this year, because they just make you feel good, and I’m starting with this one because it’s just fizz and partnership and delight

Dancing Monkeys (Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers)

This one is a more contemplative look at the partnership, with a bit of a meta filter as the song choice fairly directly addresses the audience and their reaction/desire to see the pair dance, but it’s lovely and wistful and sensuous as well

What’s to come (Jesus Christ Superstar)

Oof. A really really stunning clever Judas/Jesus character/relationship study on fame and roles and consequences, and wow it’s excellent and it hurts so much

Burning (Whitechapel)

Okay, so I basically had a sympathetic panic attack watching this, but it’s such an excellent study of the droning dread of the show and Joseph in the middle of it, armouring up and breaking down, armouring up and breaking down, and armouring up again

When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? (Star Trek: Discovery)

A lovely metronomic study of Mirror Georgiou and how steady-state terrifying she is (even -especially- when she’s being tender)

Fighter (The Expanse)

I’ve only seen clips of this show, but from what I have seen these two (Chrisjen & Bobbie) were easily my favourite parts of it. This vid is a lovely exploration of them

They’re On Their Way (Muppets Treasure Island)

I’m gonna finish with a dose of nostalgia, because the Muppets are on their way and it is excellent

here’s an incomplete list of vids that knocked my socks off– besides my THREE AMAZING GIFTS. (I may reblog to add more recs later)

  • In The Dark (fandom: Hustlers)
    Ramona was always in control.
(MY DUDES welcome to the Destimona vid OF YOUR DREAMS. Depth of meaning builds beautifully throughout the vid)

  • Emigrante (fandom: The Brother From Another Planet)
For my people, whoever they are
(A gorgeous vid made with tangible love for the source material.)

STAR TREK: DISCOVERY: there are so many amazing Disco vids in the collection!! #blessed.

  • Children’s Work
My little brother’s nearly twice my age / he taught me how to meditate / I taught him how to read
(HEARTWRENCHING. do you want to cry about Michael and Spock’s relationship? do you want to cry about their respective entire lives? here ya go. I am so so impressed this vid. this song is. it’s like. scarily accurate to them and so good at telling their story. and the vid digs deep beyond what’s on the surface.)

  • When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?
(hhhhhhgfdfbgdfbg djghbdjfbgjhdbglkjsdg sexy sexy violent complicated MIRROR GEORGIOU. philippa georgious. such stylish editing!)

  • Champion
    Little did I know I’m a champion.
(A beautiful celebration of Michael Burnham!)

I Haven’t Seen The Source But DAMN these made me feel a wide variety of things:

  • Here Till It’s Over (fandom: The Lesser Blessed)
Sometimes the right people come along at the right time in your life. An OT3 love story that, however brief, helps Larry to live again.

  • Higher Love (fandom: Xanadu (1980))
“The love that we came to know / They call it Xanadu”
Terpsichore, goddess of dance & queer romance.

  • cut me down (fandom: Us)
I couldn’t live for me if I’d still die for you.
