What's it like to be a flatbed truck driver?

When you think of a truck driver, you may visualize a semi hauling a large van next to you on the highway.

However, there are several types of driving jobs for CDL-Class A truckers and flatbed trucking, among other, is just one of them.

So, what is flatbed trucking?

Flatbed trucking is a means to transport larger and often odd-shaped loads that cannot be shipped by more conventional means such as vans or loaders.

Many building supplies like steel and lumber will, in general, need to be transported on a flatbed truck. In addition, you’ll more than likely need to haul heavy equipment such as cranes, backhoes and excavators on a flatbed trailer.

The benefits to being a flatbed truck driver

High Demand.

Flatbed truck driving jobs are in high demand based on the additional skillset required to be a safe flatbed driver.

Because flatbed truck drivers haul materials that are open to the elements and need to be secured correctly, it can be a much more physically demanding job. Drivers need to be adept at securing loads with:

Chains

Binders

Straps

Tarps

It is likely to transport oversized loads from time to time, so knowing proper size limits and dimensions between legal and over dimensional loads is mandatory.

Higher Pay

Because you're more specialized in your field and are in demand, companies are willing to pay flatbed truck drivers more.

Beginning wages for flatbed drivers start around $20 an hour and can get as high as $35 an hour or more.

But with the higher pay, comes higher demands and responsibilities.

Safety is paramount for a flatbed truck driver. Because you typically haul heavy equipment on an open flatbed, you must have the experience and skillset to secure your load to avoid injury, accident or death.

So you have to ask yourself. Is the bigger paycheck worth the higher risk?

If not, it’s best to stick with van loads. But, if you have the know-how and experience to properly secure tricky loads, you may have the stuff to become a top-paid and successful flatbed driver.
