Man I love hating Winn so so much. Her behavior towards Kira in S2 E2 "The Circle" is so delightfully infuriating. Her sweet, patronizing voice, the way she simplifies her language to appear humble and innocent, the way she pretends not to remember who Kira is - it's so fucking rotten and I love it.

"That's right - Major Kira, from the ~space station~!"

She knows damn well it's called Deep Space Nine, but the way she says it here it's like she's an innocent country girl talking about the big city. Lady, you've been there. You tried to have Vedek Bareil murdered there just a few episodes ago.

God she's terrible. I love her.

As someone who has 3 pastors in my family (luckily non of them homo- or transphobe) and sat through thousands of debates about homosexuality, Vedek Winn is lowkey triggering me and reminding me of so many "Scheinheilige" hypocrytical christians that preach love and act with hate

Mango and I watched "In the Hands of the Prophets." About halfway through they asked, “When was this made?” “1993.” “Cos they’re doing religious extremism, religious motivated violence, and religious leaders telling people to commit acts of violence with the promise of eternal rewards.” “Yeah,” and then I pointed out Vedek Bareil, in his speech, said Bajor “used to be a center of science and learning.”

They went on to say that seeing another Asian science teacher get confronted by a religious fundamentalist was real impactful. It was something they’ve seen at work, from a student.  “We stan Kira grappling with the new reality of post conflict life.” 

Then they squealed when they saw the splash page for the next episode and Kira’s cool red knit vest. I think I see a new project in the future.

Who was the first person to realize that it wasn't Bareil who should be the next Kai, but Winn? And did it take convincing to get everyone onboard or was it any easy pitch?

I think it was Ira and I pretty much simultaneously while we were rewriting "The Collaborator." Bareil was supposed to end up as Kai until then, but it occurred to us it would be a lot juicier if Winn won out.

As for pitching it to Michael and Rick, I wasn't part of that conversation, but I don't remember Ira saying it was a big deal. Making Winn the Kai definitely seemed like the best way to go to add drama to the series moving forward.

hello!!! whats your favorite star trek props/costumes? alternatively, favorite outfit janeway wore?

This is an amazing question!

If you're talking in general, there are far too many to list. I find the costuming fascinating, and I often lose the plot cause I'm staring at the details on the clothes and make up. I get caught up on both the subtle outfits and the very intricate details.

Now, for costumes I have tentative plans to make, Time and Again (which will happen this month) and Sacred Ground are some of my favorite Janeway looks. Though, I always get a kick out of it when they outfit her in beige.

Janeway adjacent, I really like the actor costumes in Muse, and I think it would be fun to have some alien prosthetics and a mask/masks on a stick.

Outside of Janeway, I am absolutely obsessed with Jadzia's Klingon opera costume from Looking for par'Mach in All the Wrong Places, and I really want to make it this summer. I've waxed about the Blood Fever rappelling suits before, but I think they are also very fun.

As for props, I tend to like the objects that are commercially with futuristic design. I have a collection of screen accurate mugs, and I'm always on the lookout for more (ahem Janeway's JMJ 350). I think the fish silverware from Voyager's Year of Hell is hilarious.

And for props to make: I made a bat'leth (and a mugato horn?), and might venture into some more of that. I might make a mirror tiled bat'leth just for the hell of it.
