This morning, I drove to the easternmost reaches of the Las Vegas Valley, to interview, film, and photograph #CeceRodriguez, a few months shy of her 100th birthday. The only female among the artists painting on #BlackVelvet in Hawaii during the 1960s and 1970s, the self-taught Rodriguez’s #BlackVelvetPaintings have been exhibited and sold in galleries around the world; and to this day, hers remain among the most sought-after and coveted examples of the medium, by collectors. A combination of listening to Ghosts n' Stuff for the first time in forever and looking at Velvet paintings made me want to paint this. I started with a black canvas and sketched with a lighter grey, and worked from there. A lot of fun. I recommend everyone try it.
