“You will come back.” Essek says and it is not a question or a statement; it is a plea.

Caleb huffs a sigh, stroking his husband’s cheek. “Schatzi-“

“You will,” Essek’s gaze shoots from the floor to Caleb. “I will not be there to protect you. So you will promise me that you will protect yourself.”

“Essek. Liebling, you know I cannot make any guarantees.”

Caleb catches a glint of fang as Essek grits his teeth, the hand at his side clenching for the briefest of moments.

“He will not take you from me.”

Angry tears bead in Essek’s eyes, blurring the silver lining them and spilling down his face. Again, he breaks Caleb’s gaze and stares at the floor. Caleb’s chest aches at the sight of it, knowing he can do nothing to end the pain, only lessen it.

“I sold my last home away for him,” Essek mutters after a moment, voice scalding with the hurt it contains. “He cannot take my new one from me too.”

The last words break on a sob and Caleb catches him just as he pitches into his arms. Tight as a vice, he holds Essek to his chest as he weeps, face buried in the scarf he himself knitted.

“Come home to me, Caleb Widogast,” he begs. “Please don’t leave me.”

Caleb has not heard him sound so broken in years.

“I will,” he whispers, ignoring the sour bite of uncertainty in his throat, and presses a kiss to Essek’s curls. “I’ll come home, my love.”

I need to shout out the Quotations section on the wiki page for "A Tangled Web" (2x77) because reading through these in order literally feels like experiencing a "Previously on" edit that gets put before a major plot episode:

its been something that has started to bother me, the way that people want to make this the imodna show. because yes! i wanted imogen and laudna to get together and i am so glad that they are in that nebulous stage of being together that the other canon cr couples have been in. but i also want other characters to have spotlights! i want more fearne, more ashton, and yes more fcg!!!! that little cleric bot is the most interesting character to me!!! his mechanics aside, this is a cleric who started the game without a connection to divinity who was still capable of using traditionally divine magic. and now they have a god! and that relationship is just as new and fragile as any other in the show!!!!! i dont care if fcg turns laudna into ash, as long as the conflict that comes from it is an intersting story.

I really think it'd be fun if Team Issylra ran into Essek. (For the record, since I know how this sounds coming from me, if Team Wildemount were going to run into any members of the Nein, I thought the divine casters corner would've been most fun to encounter in Molaesmyr.)

For real though, I just think that they'd benefit a lot from someone with a very complicated relationship to religion, not least an insular one tied into hometown politics, albeit on a larger scale, with experience with personal dissent. Also, obviously, Ashton's continued dunamancy weirdness. Plus we might get a little more insight from a wizard who's at least somewhat knowledgeable about the Solstice. (Sorry, Prism, ily anyway!)

And last but absolutely not least, exhibit A on "Never start wondering if Ludinus Da'leth might be making some points. Not even once."
