Explorations of Yuuichi's expressions!!! I wanted to see how I could try and express the range of emotions he displays through the game (particularly how his attitude shifts when he ain't putting up a front) and I did this by doing expressions for lines he has😊!!

As to why exactly I labeled the first four Yuuichi Mizuoka and the last one is merely Yuu. I thought it'd be a nice way to differentiate the flashbacks prior to the game and his heart from current Yuuichi, considering Yuu is how he's mostly called in these. Same reason for why he has a white shirt instead !!!

There's also other goofy differences i made between the kid acting silly goofy and him being 100% genuine but if i began speaking about the nuances I felt fit him based on my interpretations of the game i would be here all day

I like that the AK writers like to “yes and” each other in small ways. An operator file mentioned that Lava and Robin watch old movies together and we periodically get someone that the writer goes “yeah they watch old movies too” and now it’s expanded into a full club including Nian, Robin, Lava, Dorothy, and Fiammetta (who refused the invitation and exclusively shows up to start fights)

Okay Radiant Historia fans just hear me out

This is the original Stocke, from the first rendition of the game. Art by, I presume, Hiroshi Konishi (correct me if I'm wrong.) He is seasoned. Confident, with his relaxed demeanor. Introspective. Ground down, world-weary. A little greasy. Has slept in these clothes. He probably cut his own hair with a knife while he was out on a mission. He has seen people die; some he killed himself. Some he watched die, the light fade from their eyes and blood gurgling in their lungs. He faced that truth and it became a part of him. He accepted it. He will do it again. He's not a man with clean hands or heart, but he has a goal he would like to see come true. If it doesn't, if he fails, he will accept that too, and try again next time. He is world-wise and tired but still here. He's a veteran.

This is the Stocke from the 3DS remake, art I believe by Masaki Hirooka. This Stocke is baby. Untested. He's nervous, anxious. He may have seen someone die and it made him want to challenge the world. It hurt him; he has not moved on from that moment. He has a vision, a mission, and he's raring to make it happen. Has the same energy as a new soldier who believes he can and will end the war by doing something uniquely pivotal only he can do. Fresh. Young. Has nice conditioner, hair cut by a professional hairdresser, clothes nicely laundered.

I don't begrudge the new artist - remakes are tricky, games are complex, and it's possible their art director thought that this look would make the game more appealing to new audiences. Maybe it did! I can't tell you!

I don't, however, like the new Stocke. I prefer the one that's got eyes that are a little bit dead inside, the one who has seen some shit.

So, for any fans who feel the same way, I did a little repaint. Again, this is NOT to say the original remake art is bad - it's very good, it's beautiful, it's well made! I just prefer a different art direction, and share this version for those who would like to see this too.

It is just a paint over the sprite, not a redraw, and I definitely do not take credit for it. This is still 90% the original sprite, just with some adjustments made.

I'm a notoriously dry-eyed person who Do Not Cry when playing games or watching movies and such. But man, finishing Stray last night? The cat game got me alright. Oh my soft little bleeding heart. Leaving that final room was a lot.
