Modern AU 🏡 Thoughts

because I need to empty my brain

Lambert & Aiden

share an apartment in a four-family-house with three bedrooms on the second floor

every room contains a minimum amount of at least 8 knives or sharp objects (not counting the hidden ones)

their home is their safe place, no one except for them is allowed, not even their brothers

Lambert can't sleep without a light source, Aiden can't sleep if it's not completely dark - they have compromised on a nightlight and a sleeping mask

at this point they are basically married, but neither one of them is brave enough to ask

Eskel

lives in an earth-ship/greenhouse-house with a bunch of college students

community gardens, cooking and baking together, trying their best to live waste free

takes care of most of the animals that live in and around the greenhouse and gladly teaches his roommates how to care for the livestock

he's not a student but well known and liked around campus (partially because he makes a great ally for protests) and many professors are friends with him

Yennefer

lives in an expensive loft in the middle of the city, simply because she can

if you go there for a surprise visit, be prepared to see naked models (they don't always have an orgy, sometimes they just sit there, naked and talk)

she's super rich - obviously - so she kind of lost her sense for money ("how expensive can a water bottle be? 10 money? 20?")

not only is she a wine aunt, she's also everyone's sugar mommy, she claims it's not because she's nice but because she can't be seen in public with her found family if they don't wear expensive clothes and have enough money for a healthy diet

Geralt & Ciri

they live in a small, blue suburban townhouse with a garden, a tree with a swing and a tiny vegetable garden

Ciri loves their home more than anything in the world and refuses to move to a college dorm once she finishes high school, even if it means a two hour bus ride every day

their house has an ooen door policy for every single member of their family, needless to say, they aren't alone that often

Geralt is a bit paranoid about their safety (it comes with the job) so he always makes sure to know about everything that is going on in the street

as a result he's known to help the grannies around their neighborhood, whenever they feel a bit unsafe (they always come to him first, because he doesn't make fun of them when they feel that something is off)

Roach

Roach lives in a small student apartment complex on campus and comes to visit her Dad and little sister every second weekend with a bunch of laundry

her real name is Pavetta, after her and her sister's mother, but since that one family fishing trip everyone calls her Roach (or Roachie)

she never stays at one place very long, switches apartments and friend groups whenever she feels like it, she's a social butterfly and the Mom friend so it's easy for her

quite torn between living in the city like Yennefer does and living in a remote cabin in the woods

Jaskier

before he gets discovered on YouTube he lives in a tiny, shitty one room apartment with a broken shower and no heater (needles to say he spends most of his time at Geralt's)

during his first tour with his band, he lives in a van for over a year and misses Geralt and the others tremendously

after that he fortunately has enough money to buy himself his own cozy townhouse and paints it in a bright yellow (Ciri loves it)

his garden is bunny proofed and in summer he nearly spends all day outside with his three bunnies and his instruments (much to his neighbour's delight)

Vesemir

lives off grid, has a cabin in the woods with a bunch of dogs and a big greenhouse and a chicken coop

his boys come visit him every now and then and tell him about their work and everything that is going on in the world

• mino and yunhyeong are brothers, jinwoo and jinhwan are brothers, bobby and donghyuk are brothers, and hanbin and jiyong (yes i mean gdragon djfhsjkf) are brothers

• hanbin is jinhwan and jinwoo's cousin, and seungyoon and seulgi are cousins

• double b meet at a summer camp in the usa because hanbin's parents send him to their vacation home there every summer. they start dating when they're 16 and after they get married they adopt chanwoo

• junhwan meet through the college band started by triple kim and start dating shortly after meeting

• seulgi and irene may date but i'm not set on that

• i'm not totally sure about this either but i think mj and jinjin are also a couple and adopt the other 4 astro members

• jeonghan and joshua are half-brothers who are raised together by their moms who left their dad after they found out he was cheating on them with the other

• i'm not sure about this either yet but jeongcheol do start dating at some point and adopt some number of kids (who are of course the members of seventeen but probably not all of them)

• hanbin's older brother jiyong is one of the four founders and owners of the big bang winery, which makes the most popular wines in town

• bobby has asked hanbin out every summer since they were 11 and hanbin says yes at age 16 because he decides he likes bobby enough to take a chance on a long-distance relationship. they ultimately end up going to the same college anyway so it works out well for them

• 93/94 line go camping for their senior trip (i have a bunch of scenes written for this but idk if it'll ever become a full fic sjfhhfkd)

• minseok, junmyeon, and jongdae have monthly kim brother wine nights where they meet up and catch up on each other's lives

• yixing is a first grade teacher and doyoung is a second grade teacher at the same school as jinyoung

Avenue south residences condo

Traditional implies the classy look that we have seen around us. Traditional can be defined as timeless or modern. Jackie O and Marilyn will always epitomize what America is with our cultural beauty icons. Today the richness of the maples and oaks define most homes in the Mid West and North Eastern part of our country. Much like a Kennedy in office, Oak will always be a main stay in certain regions. For some a traditional look is an enduring look. Traditional flooring has changed over time to introduce a modern twist. Think Jessica Biel and Scarlett Johannsen. Traditional that exudes a unique sensuality.  Oaks and Maples have taken on a broader range of colors and flair (well, not as extreme as Amy Winehouse, hah) that brings character to the forefront. Traditional is no longer soccer mom, mini-van and "only on your birthday" boring.  

Lately, I've been seeing exotics make a comeback. Not only have I been attracted to some nice looking French and Spanish woman (and wines, as a matter of fact), but even in flooring. When I think South American, immediately Gabriella, this beautiful Argentinean girl that I had dated several years ago, comes to mind. Never mind that it lasted longer than the Detroit Lions chance for a Super Bowl win, what's significant is South America. Now I'm all for Brazil. The women, theCaipirinha-the drink made with Cachaca, which if you haven't had one put it on the list! Not forgetting Avenue south residence  the Brazilian wax, Rio and did I mention the women? South America also brings us some of the hottest looks with Brazilian Cherry, Amendoim, Tigerwood and Santos Mahogany. For some the exotics offer the allure of something that is different, sexy, noticeable and can make a statement. Exotics make us try harder. We put more time into the décor and furniture and noticeably more effort in planning Saturday night dates. The push to actually try with the coach and hit the gym to loose that extra 20.   Why stay home when you have a Peruvian girl to sport around town? Or the opposite, why go out when the party can come to me. After all, having the exotic girl or floor is an envy to all your guy friends (and if you're lucky some of your female ones to). One small warning- exotics do change slightly over the years. Photosensitivity to light does bring out different colors in certain species. This is so true once the words "I do" are uttered as well. Check with the manufacturer or her parents to make sure that you can live with this for the long term. I always look at the parents to gain some insight, and checking out an older floor can convey the same information.

Price is the determining factor for many things in life, and nowhere is that more true than with women and flooring. The traditional look is usually less expensive than the exotics, but the look is going to be different. Akin to dating a super model. The look never comes without a price, but unlike my genius purchase of Citibank, long term investments do pay off with the look of your home. An investment in a floor is something that will be around, which can't be said of the investment in the Budapest vacation, countless dinners and the occasional "you have to buy this for me" cash outlays made in the past. Smart shopping is the key. When mixing at the Ritz, be prepared to pay. There are several places that have beauty sans the excessive mark up. When shopping for flooring and women, the venue determines the price. Showrooms like sommeliers have flair, but add to the bottom line. I'm a big proponent of the internet for shopping- after all can Dr. Phil be wrong? You can look and compare locally, visit the Ritz, Morton's and the over-hyped Capital Grille. See, Savor and learn. But when it comes time to laying the cash there are other avenues that keep the wallet fat and Benjamins left over for season Cubs tickets.

The next item is open to much fervor and debate. Size. Size does matter to men and women both. Ignore what Cosmo and Glamor has to say, and ditto for the gym locker room guy that thinks he can switch places with Ron Jeremy. Styles change and are suited to the individual. Not only is the waif look gone, but so is the standard 2-1/4" width board size. It's been around forever but like the Macarena and poppin' your collar, there are better things we need to be looking at. I personally stick with the size 3-5 rule across the board. Visually it's more enjoyable than the super waif thinness and embodies how floors and woman should look. Now plus sizes are available but takes the right room and person to pull it off. Bigger does not mean better, well actually, let me recant. In flooring and women this applies, but in certain aspects of life this phrase is tried and true. So yes to horsepower, square footage and bra sizes!

Is the “Karen meme” sexist?

If the only people using it were poor Black women working in the service industry? No.

When most of the people slinging it are men and all of the people receiving it are women? Yes. Yes, it can be.

And when the men using it are clearly in a higher class than their targets? Sexist AND classist. Definitely.

Poor Black women are not the only source for this meme which is something American Leftists tend to forget, along with the concept that it’s not all or nothing. You can defend one usage of the meme while still condemning another. If you don’t understand why you’d possibly want to do that, I’d like to introduce you to a little something called “social context”.

Mean Girls (2005) Written by Tina Fey (female, white)

 Movie character Karen Smith, a member of the privileged in-crowd, “The Plastics”, is ditzy, self-absorbed, lacking basic knowledge, and definitely un-woke, but no more so than her friends. She is also the least rich of the crowd, has a sweet personality, and is derided by the others for her stupidity. When she can’t understand why the new girl from South Africa isn’t Black and questions her, she inspires the most famous line in the movie, “Oh my God, Karen! You can’t just ask people why they’re white!”

This Karen is much younger and, apart from her privilege and obliviousness, doesn’t really resemble any of the memes.The Black girl version of “Karen” is a lot closer to Plastics queen bee Regina George than to sweet but clueless Karen Smith. Nevertheless the Karen meme does occasionally reference her and I came across one that said, ”Oh my God, Karen! You can’t just ask for the manager!”

Originally inspired by a  Reddit user who did nothing but rant constantly about his ex-wife, Karen, this subreddit appears to be the main source of the meme as it exists in the wider online world today. This is obviously the newest source for the meme and draws from all the earlier “Karen” sources as it sees fit. 

A Tale of Two Karens

Some of the earlier “Karen” memes were based on a trope involving a (frequently) Christian woman who had probably kept herself pure before marriage and was now married with small children and a big house in the suburbs, full of barnboard and throw cushions with tacky aphorisms about family and faith written on them. She was quite privileged, well-groomed (precision haircut, nice manicure), a stay at home soccer mom, judgemental, and probably an anti-vaxxer. She probably votes Republican, has zero racial consciousness, and may be tacitly racist. She torments sales staff with her demanding behaviour and gets them fired by asking for the manager. This is the meme that came mainly from young American Black women working service jobs, and is aimed at much more privileged and socially powerful women.

The new-and-improved “Karen” is a departure. Her hair is sometimes precision cut but sometimes badly streaked and looking like a stoned waver from the 80s cut it. She may be aging badly in ways no amount of spray-tan and makeup can hide. Her clothes and manicures may be much cheaper and tackier. There is rarely any particular reference to her religion, voting habits, specific wealth, or her racial awareness beyond general middle-class self-absorption. She’s divorced and took the kids. She drinks too much wine and nobody likes her, especially not her ex. The main resemblance to the version of “Karen” invented by Black service industry workers is that she probably still likes barnboard and pillows with twee aphorisms, is still probably an anti-vaxxer, is still supported by her (ex) husband, and asks to see the manager a lot. This is the meme predominantly used and referenced by men, mostly younger white men, and is aimed at somewhat older women (Karen’s implied/perceived age can vary from about 30 to as much as 50)

Context is key. Who’s driving and using the meme? Who are the targets of the meme? What is the power balance between them? What are the “tropes” used and the cultural references implying? To avoid the racial issues of America, which tend to implode when they come into contact with social media,  I’ll use a different set of contexts. 

Many Americans are mystified by British feminists and social justice advocates labelling it “classist” because they don’t understand the context the meme evokes in Britain.

 For Americans Karen is more or less middle-class. She might be lower middle-class, upper middle-class or even nouveau-riche (newly rich/ having the money but not the mannerisms or aesthetic sense of those born to wealth). American Karen is relatively privileged, not the downtrodden masses. For Britons “Karen” is a lower-class name, and her tacky clothing, overprocessed hair, overdone makeup, spray-tans and dysfunctionally long manicured nails are all distinctly “chavvy”...a slur referencing British Roma (formerly referred to by others as Gypsies) but now applied to the lower classes living in housing estates; the sort who wear lots of gold jewelry, expensive athletic wear, and whose women wear too much make-up, too little clothing and much too big earrings. 

British Karen is not privileged; “Estates” are social housing for people in poverty or on the dole (welfare). She will likely work low-paid, unskilled, service industry jobs her entire life, much like the Black women responsible for some of the earliest Karen memes. She might have the same skin colour as her middle-class tormentors, but everything about her appearance and speech immediately screams out that she’s far below them in the social hierarchy of Britain.

When a meme changes hands, or crosses cultural boundaries, the context also changes.What the originators of the meme intended within their own context is relevant only in that context. The young Black women were “punching up”, using the meme as a bit of revenge on more powerful women who made their lives difficult. Humour that punches up, especially from the least powerful groups, is well-accepted.When a higher group targets a lower group, this is known as “punching down”. It’s considered a form of social aggression and bullying, and really only funny to those using it. It’s not funny to those on the receiving end, and rarely to bystanders, either.

Why Punching Down Will Never Be Funny

In America the context is rather less clear about who is higher and who is lower. Is this meme referencing a woman who has more social power, less social power, or roughly equal social power to those using it? Aside from the imbalance of gender in a society that still has a lot of systemic sexism, the presentation, and therefore the implied and perceived social power, of “Karen” varies quite widely. The beautiful, snobby 30ish Karen with the precision haircut and the designer handbag who asks for the manager is very different from aging, spray-tanned, wine-guzzling divorcée Karen who does so. In Britain however, the social context definitely tilts things toward “Karen” being perceived as having very little social power. Still, calling it the equivalent of the N-word is a tad melodramatic.

It’s clearly just a microaggression.
