Tsurune Character Songs Album Review
We had a lot of thoughts about these songs while working with the lyrics, so we decided to do a mini album review! Please enjoy listening to each songs as we reflect on the lyrics and composition~
Up Stairs
Mod Yumi: A very gentle, comforting song, as expected from a Minato/Seiya duet. The composers did an excellent job capturing the feeling of nostalgia; this somehow feels like a song I've known and loved for years. The lyrics are perfect--I love the references to the bridge scene from s1 ep10. The line "I had a place where my heart could relax" is so precious <3 Overall, I don't think it's the strongest song on the album, but it's definitely one of my top faves!
Mod Optimus Prime: A heartfelt way to start off the album! It's very sweet and mellow, which of course really fits the fact that, y'know, the song is about Minato and Seiya's relationship! It's more or less just a straight callback to all of season one, but it's really touching how (both literally and figuratively) they come together at the end there.
Crossover
Mod Yumi: This song is so excessively dramatic and I kinda love it?? It does NOT sound like a song that ties into a soothing, chill slice of life archery anime and I am here for it. But I'm also weak for synth horns; give me a cheesy overexuberant fake brass section and I'm sold. Bonus points for all of the archery references and unnecessarily homoerotic lyrics. (And special shoutout to Mod Optimus Prime, our resident FukuJun stan, for helping me with the color codes because I was completely lost lmao)
Mod Optimus Prime: Probably the character duo song with the most...attitude to it? And sass, which of course, fits these two incredibly troublesome boys. To me, it's almost like the two are having a back-and-forth with each other while also brazenly admitting to each other just how tangled up they are—admittedly a reoccurring theme for the duet songs, but that doesn't make it any less cute, I think!
Ari no Mama de
Mod Yumi: Very cute and wholesome, doesn't really do it for me in terms of composition though. I do think this is the most well-acted song on the album. Having heard both of these seiyuu sing as other characters (notably Suzuki Ryouta as Bisco from Sabikui Bisco and Yano Shougo as Mafuyu from Given), I was blown away by how different they both managed to sound! Changing your voice to that extent while singing is not an easy thing to do. I was also tickled by the fact that they both noticeably sang less well than I know they're both capable of singing, because it suited the characters better to do so. Listening to this song, you wouldn't think either of these singers are particularly talented, but that fact is proof in and of itself that they ARE talented. Mad respect for the skill displayed here!
Mod Optimus Prime: Unsurprisingly, sunshine boy Ryouhei and the other local cheery boy have an easygoing and slow duet! I can't really say too much aside from the fact that the lyrics are both just really cute and earnest—you can see Ryouhei's influence here, haha.
Growing Up
Mod Yumi: Very cute, very catchy! I enjoy this song a lot. As a side note, I find it interesting that besides Minato, Nanao is the only character to be featured in two songs. One of the things I like about Nanao is that he's characterized mainly through his relationships with other characters. Sometimes when we see this happening it's more to do with lazy character writing (and lbr, it usually happens with female characters). But in this case, it actually builds our understanding of the character, rather than just casting him into the side character role of 'only here to develop the MCs'. To me it's always felt like he's the most put-together of the team, watching over everyone else and giving them a nudge in the right direction, while blending in so effortlessly they don't suspect a thing, like the social chameleon he is. Oops, this just turned into me gushing about Tsurune character writing lol. The song's nice idk what else to tell ya
Mod Optimus Prime: Also yet another honest song—a rare thing for Kacchan! It's obviously about Kaito and Nanao's close friendship and the further development during season two, so it's fitting we also get to see more of Nanao's (somewhat hidden) stubborn side here. Not to meme here, but really shows how their relationship fits the, "the more things change, the more things stay the same," aka them supporting ("protecting") each other through thick and thin.
Gekkou
Mod Yumi: I'm not the biggest fan of the composition of this song. I can't put my finger on why, but the main melody isn't working for me (and doesn't work great for Asashin's voice either tbh). That said, the backing track lives rent free in my head, I'm OBSESSED. And I love the dreamy feel of the lyrics! Whereas the others feel more like a dialogue between the singers, this one feels like a poem. The ethereal quality of the music and the lyrics draws me back to Masa-san's introduction, when he was a cryptid/ghost (lmao) appearing in the dead of night to guide Minato back to archery
Mod Optimus Prime: I've only heard Asanuma Shintarou (Masaki's VA) sing in a higher register, so this was both surprising and pleasant—it's quite soothing to hear! It's also fitting that the only Real Adult™️ with bounds of experience compared to these young'uns gets a really poetic and dramatic song with, of course, lots of moon references.
Kyoumei
Mod Yumi: THIS IS THE BEST ONE. This song is a legit bop omg. Leave it to luck life to give us a character song that exceeds typical character songs! I also love the meaning of the lyrics; it almost feels like a new angle on the Shuu/Minato relationship in a way? Of course we know their history and their affectionate rivalry, but we don't really see either of them putting into words how they feel about each other (especially Shuu-- I had to laugh at the line "we didn't need mundane words"; like no dude we could actually use a few more words from you, given your track record of communicating approximately 7% of your thoughts smh). This song puts into words how much they mean to each other and how, despite their complicated history and rivalry, they still care about each other.
Mod Optimus Prime: Luck Life actually composed this song, which really shows in the style (that catchy guitar, anyone?)! I adore the constant references to "sounds"—while a bit cheesy and on those nose, of course, it fits these two to a T and calls back to that season one finale. Again, not that any of the songs are really subtle, but "We might be apart, but I believe we'll someday return / So we didn't need mundane words" really just sums up their unique friendship/rivalry. Also, love how the two only sing together at the end: really fits with the song's whole message/theme about the two being separated, but eventually reuniting! How sweet.

Framme is obviously supposed to be a young girl on account of her twin is a shota, but her promoted model is...fairly adult?? I don't know if this is a case of model reuse or what, but I'd peg her promoted version as a baby-faced 16/17 where her starting outfit makes her look about 12. But her bathing suit body also has fairly mature proportions, moreso than the other teen girls in the army.
I've got a couple supports out of her and her brother, but somehow still no mention of parents, or how two kids ended up as Stewards...they don't seem to be related to Vander?
It's bugging the hell out of me--why is Lapis pink?
--oh, hey! I was also thinking that Alcryst's 'sumimasen' sounded really familiar, and it's because he's Origami Cyclone! (and Yan Qing in FGO, and Ceylon and Lusor in Grub...)
--LUMERA IS SAILOR MISATO?!
Hang on, we're going to the seiyuu list so I can re-enact BEYONCE?.gif repeatedly. I kept only finding the dub list of voice actors whenever I looked before
--LIEF IS SUZUKEN?!
Marth is Grub Freyr and Albert, as well as Heero Yuy and Persona 3's Akihiko, FGO's Diarmuid, Digital Devil Saga's Heat, and...DBZ's Android 16 and Tenshinhan...wow, the range...
--CELICA IS LYRIA?? (also FGO's Suzuka Gozen and Ibaraki-Douji, but Lyria feels so much weirder since I just watched Touyama Nao in wacky GBF VA games...)
Sigurd is Seruel, which feels about right somehow...
Roy being Fukujun feels both bizarre and entirely expected.

Okay ngl I've heard FukuJun do girly voices before because of an older series he was in called Princess Princess where the basic plot is literally he joins an all boys boarding school where all the boys are desperate to see any girls so they round up the prettiest boys and have them act as a group of basically idols to raise morale. FukuJun voices the main character and the other two are voiced by Tetsuya Kakihara and Romi Park. It hasn't exactly aged well since you know what a lot of the humour from the 2000s was like, but if you can look past that, it's a pretty fun short series with only 12/13 episodes.
ajdmgkglh oh damn that sure is A Concept 🤔👀
ah he voices grell in black butler too doesn't he?? or am i mixing things up 🤔🤔🤔🤔

You attended the Fan Clan streaming event, right? Do you have any news of what happened during the event and any new news of what we will see during this year?
Tumblr media
I think most of the main info had already been reported by the time I woke up (I had to get up at 3am for the event XD) so I didn't bother making a post for it. The event was basically Gora sitting in chairs and talking, they had a whiteboard and Black (? I think it was Black) got up to write on it but only ended up writing a date of 3/1 -- that's the date that they'll apparently be making the 10th anniversary announcement and the new site where they'll be posting Ground Zero, Las Vegas, etc. They also announced a new serialization for the site too, Side Gold.
Novelizations are coming for Missing Kings in June and ROK in August (Orange made a comment on Twitter about 'writing the Christmas battle over Christmas'). There's also going to be a K All Memories event later this year, some more copies of the novel will be available but they didn't specify if the book will be available online or in person at the event. Ticketing is online but I got the impression they're hoping for an in-person event where you need book in hand. There was a little random chatter from Gora about the possibility of a second All Memories book with the Fan Clan stories eventually but nothing confirmed or anything. Also possibly we may get more audio dramas?
For the rest of the event, a lot of it was just Gora chatting. My listening Japanese is terrible so I could only follow so much, they talked about a lot of different K AUs that would be possible (like oni K or space colony K...and 'K-metsu no Yaiba' XD). Also the idea of other Slates elsewhere, like 'a Japanese Slate and an American Slate.' Then they played a little anniversary video, with the first tweet they'd ever made about K's production and little bits from Gora with everyone's voices pitched weird, I think it was supposed to be funny? If I understood more it probably would have been :P
It was reported that the previous event did a little audition thing with one of the voice actors and they did that again, this time it was Fukujun! We got to hear his audition for Yata. They also played a couple lines of him auditioning for Totsuka and several lines for Fushimi XD His Fushimi was interesting, the closest comparison I can think of is he used a voice similar to the one he uses for Lelouch, with the lower tone. The 'Mi-sa-ki' wasn't quite as memorable as Mamo's XD And he did the line from ep 5 where Saru yells at Kamamoto for interfering, that sounded just like plain ol' Yata.

Just want to ask what vyn card from the cn server have you been wanting to get or saving up for? :DD
Hmm... I already have my most anticipated card, Electrifying Night, which killed my s-chips savings (currently at 9k, rip anniversary).
I would say my most anticipated would be the upcoming Halloween MR so I hear FukuJun make horny moaning sounds during the blood donation gone wrong :3c
For gacha cards tho, I would say his upcoming solo SSR card where he gets sick? That one was a bit spicy. Yeah. I can't wait for it to get to global
But as people who know me already know... I would want to get ALL Vyn cards anyway so um *looks at gacha fund reserves*

BLCD Reviews: Lala no Kekkon 2
Tumblr media
Title: Lala no Kekkon 2 (ララの結婚 2)
Author/Artist: Tamekou
Release Date: 2019/10/20
Cast:
Eguchi Takuya x Saitou Souma
Fukuyama Jun
Nishiyama Koutarou
Synopsis: Sequel of the series of the same name.
Review Proper
The things I do for Saitou Souma.
Anyway, I have read the parts of volume 2 which Tenshi no Akuma has worked on beforehand, so I had an idea of what was going to go down here. But even if I didn’t, it wouldn’t be hard to figure Tamekou out. And I vaguely quote OmNom’s and gwkimmy’s review on sensei’s Deichuu no Hasu: “Sensei be too shallow”.
Sensei tries so hard to create an elaborate psychological atmosphere...
Tumblr media
just to have a wHoLeSomE and cUTe ending. It’s like Tamekou is literally allergic to consistency. Have y’all ever seen a good psychological series with wHoLeSomE and cUTe endings??? Let me tell you, love borne out of Stockholm Syndrome will never, ever be so innocent and pure. Fucking reminds me of the Nii-chan extra. 🤮🤮🤮 But yo, at least Harada characters have fucking self-awareness when it comes to rape and such. Does have Uruji have that??? FUCK NO. Sensei just gonna go ahead and make Uruji look cute and dashing so Lamudan falls in love with him and fights Uruji’s proposed second wife over him. Medetashi medetashi.
There’s literally a lot of less irritating ways to make Lamudan fall in love with Uruji (like fucking consent), but we gotta be on brand with the Harada bootleg shebang, right??? Also, speaking of consistency, I can’t with the dialogue having English loan words. What kind of imaginary 18th century Mongolia is this where the people use English loan words?! What is this? Sahara no Kurowashi??? At least Sahara no Kurowashi doesn’t pretend to be deep!
Ugh. My blood pressure rose typing this all out. Time to move onto the voice work.
Tumblr media
Wow. Sis Eguchi really ain’t playing! And what did I say in the last BLCD again???
“It’s like each time I say that this performance of so-and-so is the best of them I’ve heard yet, their next performance automatically turns out to be better!”
This is by far, again, the BEST I’ve heard of Egu. I don’t understand why he was nominated for his Koi wo suru Tsumori Nakatta performance when his Uruji was the goddamn g (I mean, despite his character being a goddamn insult). It was so smooth and so natural even though his Uruji was a tad different from his natural voice! What’s more is that, I just came from listening Fujitsu and he does not sound like his Sena AT ALL! Granted, Egu still sounds a little like Makonyan and even Hino Satoshi here, but I can now say that his role belongs to him and him alone. Also, if he just used his Uruji tone for his Akihiko, it would have been hundred times better. Today I learned that Egu can sound like Hino Satoshi when he’s not trying to. 😂 Are you taking down notes, Blue Lynx?
As for Saitou Souma, I’m proud to say that I didn’t hear his Aoi in his Lamudan at all. Y’all might be tired of me always praising SS, but he deserves it. I know he’s winning 2021. 😂 Side note: my whole family’s actually a fan of Saitou Souma (even my mom because she watches Haikyuu and likes Yamaguchi).
Main VAs aside, another reason why I forced myself to read volume 2 was because I liked Badom. Like, I really liked Badom and I ship him with Lamudan. I’m disappointed that Badom didn’t legit make off with him. 🙄 Anyway, I didn’t look at the complete cast list, so I didn’t know who was going to voice him. I remember thinking of throwing hands if it’s going to be Ono Yuuki again, but then—
Tumblr media
ANOTHER GEN 1???!!! HAD I KNOWN I WOULD’VE LISTENED TO THIS BEFORE MDZS!!! Oh bless FukuJun’s heart for coming back twice in 2020. 😩 So when is Daisaku making his big comeback? Man, idk about you guys, but like Shimono Hiro, FukuJun’s great as a top even though he has exclusively been a bottom throughout his career in the BL industry. I’m just so sad that he doesn’t have any R18 otome CDs because if he had at least one, then we’d be able to gauge just how good at topping he really is. I might have already mentioned this in Rakka Ryuusui no Hoshi, but I really love FukuJun and he’s one of my favorite VAs of all time. Speaking of Rakka, Lala 2 is almost the same as that because we also have Saitou Souma here, but not as FukuJun’s uncle, but his brother-in-law instead! THIS JUST MAKES ME SHIP THEM MORE!!! HAHAHAHA WHEN ARE WE GOING TO HAVE A FUKUJUN X SAITOU SOUMA BLCD???!!! MAKE IT HAPPEN PLEASE!!!
Why is it that when Saitou Souma and FukuJun meet in a BLCD, the plot is almost always underdeveloped? 😂 Anyway, Lala 2 did have spectacular voice work despite the plot because everyone from the main VAs to the minor ones delivered. Nishiyama Koutarou’s character didn’t have a lot of dialogue here, so it’s a bit sad since it’s also been a while since I’ve heard him in a BLCD. I hope to hear him in one again soon.
In conclusion, we had great voice work and chemistry that’s even better than the first volume. I didn’t read the raws (do I look like I’d spend a cent on Tamekou???), so I can’t vouch for the chapters TnA haven’t released, but I can guarantee you that this would be a little difficult to follow if you’re going to lean on their scans. Since this is a sequel, they had to explain the past events first. They’ve also rearranged some of the events, too. If you’re planning to do a read-along, I’d suggest getting your hands on the tank if you can because TnA’s scans does have a considerable amount of inaccuracies in the translations. It’s a pretty good adaptation overall, so if you’re a fan of the VAs and can stomach the plot or if you’re a fan of the plot itself, then break a leg. I’m not really sure if there are other Mongolian/Eurasian themed BL out there, so I can’t recommend anything else. 🙇

-Spoiler-
If we ever get another jjk season where Kenjaku's revealed, I expect a performance no less than the airpod hahaoya by Getou's seiyuu.
lol. Veteran male seiyuu is truly a different brand
(on another note: I will probably lose it if FukuJun joins jjk cast. He's my favorite ever)

Funny story but the first ero drama cd I have ever listened to is from FukuJun which is Nochikare 2 that I found from SoundCloud because I wanted to listen to some otome cds while studying… but boi did I not expect the groans and kissing noises which KILLED ME because holy hell he sounded angelic and oddly energetic after busting a nut (//∇//) and I am kind of a fan of those type of voices
Anyway, I actually wanted to ask because I’m kind of new to CD dramas and I’m wondering where can you purchase the CDs from the Nochikare series? SoundCloud has been taking down a lot of drama cds lately especially the ecchi ones.
lmao "angelic"...it do be the nut afterglow :^) but ya his character is an energetic type and he voices quite a number of them! p.s. my tumblr header is from this CD's character art
I don't think rabbitcandy (the cd label) sells this series digitally so unfortunately you'd probably need to buy the physical copy from retailers like stellaworth, amazonJapan, or animate!

So, I’ve been watching Araburu Kisetsu no Otome-domo yo. I’ve actually been refraining myself from writing anything about it until I finish the show, but I really need to say this.
I really like Milo-sensei.
He’s not the best guy (reserving that title for Amagi Shun--as of episode 10), and he’s not the most righteous guy either. And sure, I first liked him because of his ikemen look (still do) and having FukuJun voice him is a definite plus, but really, despite all the flaws that he has, he has well-defined lines that he will not cross, though he may have questionable reasons behind those lines. Still, there are lines. He knows what he could and couldn’t do. He knows where to put his foot down.
And to be honest, I quite like his arc with Hongo. Thanks to a certain mishap, Hongo probably couldn’t really see him as a teacher, so even though Milo, or Yamagishi, wants to stop her from pursuing him, conventional methods probably wouldn’t work on her. I’m not saying that I commend his actions and choices, but in his mind, he probably wants Hongo to realize her mistakes by herself, so he plays along with her and tries to be the bad guy.
Because, just look at that face! I think that’s the most genuine face he’s ever made in the entire series! He’s not looking down at her anymore. He’s not trying to act all high and mighty and say condescending words. In that moment, he’s being honest and being himself and I love him for it.

Geass Movie Super Ultimate Final Summary Extra Mega Sugoi Version (2/2)
Last time on Code Geass, Lelouch of the Re;surrection: Shesthaal is very cute, Lelouch blows up Shesthaal with Bitool’s Sakuradite, Shesthaal cries out for his father as he gets blown up, and there goes my interest in this movie.
Tbf though, it’s a good death scream. Imagine what kind of noises he makes in bed... he’s def an uke...
Anyway, continuing on.
Lelouch and the gang split from the prison and the container of prison staff he Geassed to help with their getaway is seen being let go. Although it took him 728 days longer to rise from the dead, Jesus Lamperouge has learned mercy.
Back in the capital at Shamna’s temple, Shesthaal’s dad, Cmdr. Forgnar, comes in and goes, “Holy shit my son died let’s go FUCK UP THE UFN” and Shamna is like, “No, let’s not.” Whether you think he actually cares or whether he wants to use this as an excuse to fuck up the UFN is up to you. However, based on the dialogue about how Cornelia is a curse word in this region, and how Forgnar doesn’t talk about his son like ever again (even other characters who aren’t even from Zilkhstan bring up Shesthaal’s “disappearance” later), it comes off as more like... Forgnar just wants an excuse to go fight Cornelia.
She asks Bitool how long ago Shesthaal died and Bitool replies it was in the afternoon, at 11am. Since it’s out of the 6 hour time limit (we’ll come back to this later), she apparently can’t do shit. Shamna says that with her prophecy, even if they’re Geass users, they can beat anyone. It shows Nunnally on the ceiling in some kind of tank. And also she has new clothing but isn’t wearing underwear because in Zilkh culture, they don’t wear underwear. This might read like a joke sentence, but it’s a 100% serious sentence.
At the UFN HQ, Schneizel is wearing glasses and looks hot. That’s all you need to know. There’s also a convo related to the plot and sending people and supplies to Zilkhstan including Lancelot’s new fortress frame coat, but I’m just gonna explain this in the next bit.
Back to the Good Guys, Sayoko observes some drop ships. Cornelia, who is now a general in the UFN (which makes her a Black Knight) has shown up with a small team of Black Knights and a Rag Tag Band from the TV series - herself, Guilford, Ohgi, Tamaki, Cecile, Nina, Anya, Jeremiah. The 8 of them, combined with Lelouch, CC, Kallen, Suzaku, Lloyd and Sayoko, plus Cornelia’s BKs, are going to save the fuck out of Nunnally.
Now, you might be asking yourself, “Why these specific people?” HMM WELL YOU SEE. None of them, aside from Cornelia and her few soldiers, are actually BKs anymore. Kallen is only a reserve member as she’s attending university. Basically, Schneizel can’t formally be like, “Wow send 1000 people to rescue Nunnally and mobilize the Black Knights” which is why he’s sending people who are mostly not involved with the Black Knights on this SUPER SECRET MISSION. (They talk about this back when CC first meets up with Kallen/Sayoko/Lloyd.)
And you might also be asking yourself... “Wait, what about Tohdoh, Gino, Xingke”, etc. What about those other Black Knights? HMM WELL YOU SEE. Xingke died, and the rest aren’t very popular characters, so plot-wise they stuck with the Black Knights giving the story and animators excuses to not include them in the main plot except for something really brief later.
Anyway, Lelouch has taken up the Zero costume again while CC is upset they haven’t run away to fuck like rabbits yet so she drinks a martini. And Cornelia is the only person with a brain, so she is like, “Dude, what the fuck? Am I supposed to be OK with this while Euphy and Darlton are dead?” Everyone else is like down to help Lelouch and Cornelia is not having this shit. Lelouch convinces her by taking off his Zero mask and sincerely asking his older sister for help.
Cornelia is like, “Hell yeah we’re gonna save Nunnally” after this but first since no one has seen each other in a while, they need to party first. Kallen and CC have some girl time finally but then proceed to fail the Bechdel test and talk about Lelouch.
Ohgi gives Lelouch a USB drive from Kaguya then tries to kill himself even though he has a wife and a child at home. Lelouch, without turning around, knows Ohgi is trying to kill himself so he forgives him and say it’s okay because he is merciful Jesus now. It’s chilly at night in the desert and Cornelia’s outfit is like sleeveless and zettai ryoiki so she’s walking around in the Zero jacket and gives Suzaku a drink.
Honestly, just let Cornelia be Zero.
Lelouch signals Suzaku up to the water tower, where they talk about how Lelouch understands the plot regarding his resurrection as well as the viewer (as in he doesn’t) and as far as he knows he could roll over and die at any time. Then an extremely misplaced Ali Project insert song plays while Lelouch watches a video from Ohgi’s wedding with lots of characters conveniently gathered at once... one of which happens to be Nunnally.
Also, Cornelia’s tits are one of the most well-drawn things in this movie next to Shesthaal’s hair when he’s in the cockpit. Honestly, I appreciate you, Sunrise.
SO, keikaku time. Instead of trying to explain this chronologically, I’m just gonna explain it... not chronologically.
Shamna’s Geass is to send her memories back in time 6 hours when she dies, so she effectively knows what’s going to happen and Zilkhstan can prepare for it. In an interview, Lelouch’s VA Fukujun compares this to “uploading her memory to Cs’ World and then downloading it” since Cs’ World has no concept of time. So, basically, the reason why Zilkhstan has been successful is because Shamna is fucking save scumming.
It is implied she already reset time at least once in the movie by now. The first is that at the start of the movie, Shalio remarks about how Zero moved to the place that Shamna said he would, so Shalio and the other KMFs are able to set up a trap under Suzaku in advance. I don’t know why she can’t chain this 6hrs -> back another 6hrs.
Lelouch and co initiate their plan. Lelouch successfully outmaneuvers Zilkhstan at every single place possible: Suzaku and Kallen are on the flats in Strike Freedom and Infinite Justice and wipe out all of the mooks. Everyone else is also able to make it to their destination. Zilkh soldiers have been Geassed to blow up their bases, Bitool can’t make it to his Guard Scorpion mech, etc.
Finally, Lelouch rides up to Shamna’s temple on the Mahoraba (the one Suzaku didn’t wreck at the start of the movie). Shamna goads Lelouch by hitting a button that auto-kills Nunnally in her tank. Lelouch responds by gunning Shamna down immediately. Shamna sends her memories back in time 6 hours.
Shamna is bathing with Shalio when she has a “prophecy”. We see she has a Code on her lower belly in this scene. She calls up Forgnar and explains the plot to him. This time around, Zilkhstan is prepared for all of Lelouch’s bullshit. Lelouch starts to despair and is almost shot down in the Mahoroba when Anya and CC show up and rescue his dumb noodle ass. Lelouch and CC co-pilot the Gekkoei. Lelouch has an existential crisis as he freaks out about his plans not working while everyone around him also freaks out about the plan not working and asks him for further instructions. And I mean like, literally everyone except for uhmm Cornelia? I think?
There’s a scene in R2 where Suzaku debuts the Lancelot Albion. Bismarck is there in Galahad and uses his Geass to fight Suzaku. Lelouch then rings up Suzaku and goes, “Dude, this being broadcasted worldwide, don’t fucking embarrass me”. Suzaku then goes on to use his live Geass to somehow overpower the Knight of One.
If this were a scene in the movie, it would be like, the Knight of One dodges one of Suzaku’s attacks or something and then Suzaku freaks the fuck out and goes, “OH NO, THE KNIGHT OF ONE HAS A GEASS. LELOUCH, WHAT DO I DO? MICROMANAGE ME AND GIVE ME SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS.” That is honestly what this whole sequence feels like.
Eventually, CC puts a gun to his head, out edgelords him, and convinces him to get his shit together. Lelouch gives her orders to give to everyone else because Geass doesn’t work on her. Thanks to Tamaki’s stupidity, he then uses the Zilkh public channel to declare that it’s time for the final phase of this mission. Suddenly, everyone becomes competent again and CC starts issuing commands to people. CC asks him what “final” means, and Lelouch replies it means nothing.
We then go through 30(?) implied time resets. While it doesn’t show time resetting literally 30 some times, it is implied that Lelouch gets 1 plan to work, then Shamna resets time and is ready for his new plan next time. We know it’s 30-ish because Lelouch has 8 folder plans he gives to CC, and also has 22 theories about what the enemy Geass user’s Geass is and he goes down the list eliminating them.
Something that I think English viewers missed from the American theater screenings is that CC does not retain their memories because Shamna’s Geass only affects herself. So, essentially, from Lelouch’s POV, he’s just going down the list until something works. From Shamna’s POV, she goes back and prepares to counter him every time she sees his next move.
On the last loop, Lelouch’s last ditch effort to figure out Shamna’s Geass is to bluff her by saying, “I have the same Geass as you”. Shamna freaks the fuck out and tells her guards not to kill Lelouch. Lelouch can tell from this reaction what her Geass is, so he Geasses her to sleep, and also sets a bomb that will go off in 10-11-12-whatever hours. (E.g. even if Shamna resets time, she’ll be back in time but it’ll be when she’s sleeping.)
Lelouch and CC try to wake Nunnally but she isn’t responsive. CC deduces that her soul/KOKORO/whatever is not in her body. However, they set Shamna’s temple to blow up in [X] hours. Lelouch and CC use Shamna’s system to enter the metaphysical world. CC goes to confirm something, then she will leave to move their bodies so they don’t die IRL.
CC confronts Shamna and learns the plot: “I want to remake the world.” Recall that in R2, Marianne and Charles needed 2 Codes to fuck Cs’ World. Shamna has 1 Code on her womb. Charles is dead, she doesn’t know Lelouch has one. Seemingly, she tried to use Nunnally has a make shift second Code due to her connection to the magic world cause of her family. (Her “wavelengths” are the same as Charles’s.)
Ah, yes, an older sibling with a Geass who has a younger wheelchair bound sibling tries to fuck the whole world. Hmm NEVER HEARD THAT PLOT BEFORE. Shamna wishes to stay in the metaphysical realm so she can see Shalio as he passes by. CC warns her not to “leave her [heart/essence/whatever] behind”. Interpretation is that CC is saying, “Can you please not fuck this up like how Charles did” [by leaving himself behind].
In the real world, CC, Tamaki and Ohgi have moved Lelouch and Nunnally’s bodies away from the temple. Lelouch finds Nunnally. The two get swallowed by black particle bullshit until Lelouch confesses that Geass is his sin (or something... I don’t actually remember what he says before the “uhh this is my sin” part). After, rainbow fucking magic hands appear to “catch” them, and Lelouch remarks that these are the people who helped earlier. (Earlier as in, when CC reached for Lelouch.)
The sub-plots that occur during all of these time resets are as follows:
Ohgi and Tamaki steal a KMF by distracting the pilot with camels crossing the road then getting on top of the KMF and beating the pilot up. Then they make hot pot while waiting for orders from Zero.
Sayoko ditches Ohgi and Tamaki to meet up with the science crew who can’t escape the city because Qujappat is after them. Cecile gets shot during the skirmish (all 30 fucking times) and Nina kills Qujappat by disconnecting her KMF’s energy filler power lines and dropping them in water to electrocute him and the other assassins to death.
Gino and Tohdoh (and others) are trying to talk to Zilkhstan official politic-y people about the Nunnally and Zero being MIA thing as members of the Black Knights. Gino asks to know why Zilkhstan’s Official Elite Bodyguard Captain Something Something Rich Pretty Boy PR Person Shesthaal is mysteriously missing from this meeting as he was supposed to be there. Milly, who is watching events unfold at the TV station, also asks about where he went.
Suzaku fights Shalio with his new Lancelot (ugly as) siN and its thicc frame coat. Shalio beats him in the frame coat. Suzaku purges the frame coat and then beats Shalio. However, by this point, Shalio’s body is seemingly at its limit (he’s bleeding out of his eyes), and honestly it feels like a free kill. At one point, Suzaku asks Shalio, “Why the fuck did you ruin peace etc” and Shalio replies that he has to be the ultimate warrior (implied: for his sister) so he can’t do this hand-holding peace shit and his country has nothing but fighting.
Kallen gets trapped by Bitool’s guard scorpion mech in the Guren Special Type (also thicc). She purges the frame coat and magical warp speed jumps out of the energy sphere she’s trapped in, then blows up Bitool with her good ole laser knife.
Cornelia and Guilford are on the bridge. Cornelia fights Forgnar, who then tries to sacrifice himself and orders his troops to kill both him and Cornelia. Cornelia encourages him to find a peaceful solution.
After all of this bullshit resolves, Shamna’s temple blows up and we see a visual representation of her being exploded inside of the Thought Elevator where CC last saw her. In the real world, Lelouch and Nunnally chat about being together again. The scene between them ends without you hearing his response to her. CC skips town, but not before Kallen gives CC her bootleg Cheese mascot.
Lelouch catches up to CC (out of breath, ofc). CC says something about going to find other Geass users like Shamna (I don’t remember the exact details cause Shesthaal has nothing to do w/this scene, sorry). Lelouch goes with her, taking up the name LL to match CC’s non-human name. CC pauses, then blushes and makes a moe anime waifu noise.
However, it is nowhere near as cute as Shesthaal’s “umu” or when he asks where Zero is in the prison (”Zerooooo?”). Lmao fucking get rekt CC he’s cuter than you and also has long green hair.
In the post-credits scene, Lelouch and CC have clothes from a 2000s Hot Topic - CLAMP-looking black gothic outfits. Something that like... no one has mentioned so far is that Lelouch is wearing a rose choker that matches Shirley’s rose earrings from the ending cards. Shirley also showed up in a mall earlier in the movie. Shirley... was shopping at Hot Topic for Lelouch and CC and bought herself earrings while she was there? Idk.
Lelouch recites the same Power of the King speech that CC gave him in the first episode of the anime, but with a couple differences. He says the power MAY isolate you, not that it will, and also that if you suck at Geass, he’ll take it away from you.
~ ThE eNd ~
OKAY YEAH SO I didn’t really enjoy this movie a lot. You have about 5 seconds to mourn Shesthaal before Daddy Schneizel shows up in glasses. It’s like you’re eating a cute little salad and you’re not done when your entree shows up. (Your entree. In glasses. And looking hot and appetizing as fuck.)
Pretty boy stuff aside, my opinion is generally that the main plot stuff is a bunch of “whatever” but the smaller stuff is good. Like... Tamaki and Ohgi making hot pot in a KMF after knocking out the pilot by distracting them with camels crossing the road (semi-foreshadowed earlier when Tamaki and Ohgi were hiding out near some sleeping camels) was some pretty great character interaction that actually led up to Lelouch’s, “Yo, final phase” speech on the open channel.
Shalio knowing that Suzaku is Zero BECAUSE OF THE FUCKING SPINKICK was pretty great too. There are lots of small things that have nothing to do with Lelouch and CC that I found way more memorable and Code Geass-y. Even just reading interviews is fun - Nobbu is a good VA and there’s an interview where he’s like, “Taniguchi told me, ‘Your dad is Akio Ohtsuka’ and I instantly understood”... lol...
The stuff with, “Everyone is useless, good thing Lelouch is here” was kind of physically painful to watch. From a thematic POV, we see the compare/contrast - Nunnally able to live without Lelouch but Shalio unable to do the same without Shamna. And also with how Zilkhstan are a bunch of headless chickens without Shamna micromanaging them with her prophecies yet all of the old TV cast magically become competent again after Lelouch says their plan is now entering the final phase.
E.g. we see how a ~decorated war hero~ like Cmdr. Forgner was also reliant on her explaining the plot (maybe it’s for the best poor Shesthaal died before finding out everything about his dad and his country were big fucking shams ;_;). However, just because I understand why it’s in the movie doesn’t mean I have to like it. ‘_>’
It was like watching uh, idk, Advent Children or Nadesico: Prince of Darkness or something. Which was also about the expectation level for this movie, but I actually felt fatigue kick in around the 1hr 20min mark...

touchi hiroki /presses send/ go off fam
*drags my hands down my face* OH BOY WHERE DO I BEGIN WITH THIS I DON’T HAVE A SINGLE THOUGHT ABOUT THIS MAN THAT ISN’T +18
CLEARS THROAT anyway
The thing with Touchi was that it took an EXTREMELY obscure character he voiced to become a fave of mine for me to suddenly realize that he’d voiced many other faves of mine (before Gundam 00 I didn’t really care that much abt seiyuu stuff) and then I realized the man is a fucking ghost
To put it simply or as simply as I can while doing six different things at the same time, my problem is that this man did like two of my old also pretty obscure favs (Ovan in .hack// and daddy father Abel Nightroad in Trinity Blood which are two franchises that??? need??? a lot more recognition???) and then he voiced CROSS FUCKING MARIAN HIMSELF (???? HE???) and besides those and a few very minor roles he’s nowhere to be found.
Like... other seiyuus are constantly doing interviews and events and crap??? bUT HIROKI TOUCHI DOES NONE OF THOSE THINGS N O N E the other day I was so thirsty for content I ended up watching some fucking Kuroshitsuji valentine’s day special and it was physically painful to put myself through it (kudos to OnoD, Fukujun and Suwabe for actually making it through that dumpster fire of a series without punching someone?) but I DID IT FOR HIM
Apparently he’s like won awards and all but he mostly appears in videogames and I’m too much of a broke bitch,,,,,, I have so many concerns abt the new 00 sequel and like 50% of those are abt Hiroki Touchi not showing up again bc like Lasse has like 10 lines in total in the series AND the movie and I can deadass see sunrise deciding to kill him off or recasting him or something???
I just. Fucking love his deep manly voice? If you listen with the right earphones I swear to god you can feel his voice on your back mmmmMMMBOI he’s like a fucking truck engine?? Touchi was born to voice handsome manly men who look like they have their shit together but really really don’t and I’m just a slut for that
tl;dr I’m a fukcin idiot thanks for coming to my ted talk

Because no one wanted this, here is my review thing about Assassination Classroom: Graduation, which I had the opportunity to see in an official Japanese Cinema Festival back in May.
First things first- Back in October, I strumbled into the manga’s volume 19 slip column by Matsui, where he thinks of the following:
“I think everyone should enjoy this work through their favorite medium, although, as of lately,  I have been thinking that I would be glad if you could compare the different mediums where Assassination Classroom has been released.”
SO. *Spoiler warning, and take note most of this is mostly me talking about the movies as a fan of the series; not an outsider*
I’m very open about how I think that Matsui had a weird wall of decisions (very questionable) in events surrounding the series’ climax. I was happy that the anime did what they did around it, even though some missed opportunities (that are easily countable in one hand).
And the question now was, “so, how the 2nd live action made it through?”
Let me start with the obvious:
It’s very clear that the AnKyou live action movies are more Nagisa and Koro-sensei centric than the series itself. So, if you are waiting to have spotlight (or some justice, considering the prequel) on other characters besides... a few, actually, WELL, you are out of luck :’)
Also, I was told in 2016 that the second movie was an improvement from the first, and it REALLY shows, tbh. Maybe it’s because the second part of the series story is when things move out quick... but, in my personal opinion, I still think Graduation still has some pacing issues (editing fault?) related to some key events they wanted to adapt here, too.
Don’t get me wrong, the movie is entertaining (I dare to say even more than the first one), action packed, there are moments that are fine and all... but the rush to keep key events (Kayano’s reveal, Koro-sensei’s past, the whole dispute about killing or saving Koro-sensei and the climax) and the time of 2 hours... well.
There are a few things that I think, in a similar way as Lerche did in the second season, were improved in this medium, because there are times that I think Matsui was a little too extra in regards to some of those key events.
Let’s talk a bit about the adaptional liberties the director and the screenwriter made. Some of these are ACTUALLY an improvement from the manga and anime’s events, but the way they DID adapt things, also take some valuable moments and characterization from some of the characters.
For example, ignoring the entire romantic sub-plot about Irina and Karasuma. I’m not that much against what developed from it in the manga, although it kinda settled down Irina.. however, Irina’s relationship with the 3-E students in the Live Action was... somewhat minor. The only chance she really bonded with the kids is... well, the sleep-over (taken in context from the Kyoto trip) with the girls... and THAT was it. She does talk with Nagisa, and Koro-sensei... and helps the kids out to escape when they were caught by the government (at least she had her badass boast moment here, instead of not having a last hurrah in the anime...). She is mostly a stranger, still the b*tch-sensei everyone seemd to like... but... at what price, tbh...
The movies never really take out the whole “well, these kids could be the greatest hitmen the world may have known, as they were taught by a former hitman as well”, but more “these kids are in this situation just because of circumstances to kill this monster that may destroy the Earth”. So, the lack of empathy from Irina (”I don’t want these kids to grow up as assassins as I did”) could be explained thanks to the fact that the kids never had to deal with stuff worse than Takaoka in this universe (Shiro is definitely a point and comma, though).
It’s more a chain of effects about characterization; it’s the same way Terasaka didn’t have his redemption from an incident where he almost (accidentally) killed his friends and classmates -because here Shiro never manipulated him to be a masive homicide complicit- didn’t play a part on helping Itona (instead, Itona just fought with Nagisa and Karma); and the way characters don’t exist (Gakuhou is mentioned, a “blink and miss” moment, but never plays a part in the story, the whole Kunugigaoka Academy system is never interrogated, either), etc, etc.
The characters may don’t have their full developments (or spotlights; almost terribly non-existent from the kill vs save dispute), and some of their quirks are mostly “blink and you may miss it” (like Muramatsu and the rest of the Terasaka’s gang helping him in an okonomiyaki -instead of ramen, but eh- stand for the school’s Culture Festival), and I was attempting my best to identify all of them...
I mean, ignoring part of the “baggage” gives a different flavor to the story. It could be good, but also bad, in my opinion.
i know a live-action adaptation shouldn’t be perfect, but... sometimes it takes something that made special the original sources, you know?
One part that I also like, but definitely helped the story is the way how the kids are trying to find a cure to save Koro-sensei instead of how they did in the manga/anime (and it’s more believable than hijacking a space travel unit and goign to space, smh). They also had to steal research data (although I would have loved if it didn’t did that ONE scene with Ritsu!Hashimoto Kanna)... but to do the experiments themselves with help of Okuda (and not finding they already did it earlier in the series). It’s very cute, actually. The twist on this? The data they stole is FAKE. Yanagisawa planted it.
OH, btw... Yanagisawa.
The focus of the movie was also revealing Koro-sensei’s past. It was something else, lol. It plays more or less the same. In a similar vein to FukuJun voice acting as Shinigami, Ninomiya acts as Shinigami... and it was interesting and “somehow this works?” because, I’m not a fan of Ninomiya or the Arashi guys... and I really don’t think of him as a “bishonen” (as Matsui drew and referred to the Shinigami) idol, |D (also the nice details about that one Rotten Manten fashion catalogue were ALSO cute; it’s the closest they exist IRL)
Also, extremely weird seeing all the abuse Yanagisawa put on Aguri, considering Narimiya Hiroki and Kiritani Mirei were Nick and Maya in the Ace Attorney movie, whoops.
Yanagisawa was still an asshole... but much more bitter than the original source. OH, the CGI effects they used on his ultimate tentacle form were great, tbh. VERY terrifying.
The only things I’m MOSTLY disappointed are finale related: WHY, OH WHY, WHY it didn’t have a final Roll Call?! I think THIS is the most emotional moment from the entire series because the kids have accepted that Koro-sensei must be killed. And because they will terribly miss him. But, nooo, “let’s prove further this is mostly about Nagisa and Koro-sensei”, I guess. “The non-fan viewer wouldn’t care for the rest of the students!” Ah, so frustrating :’)
Funnily enough, I started playing “Tabidachi no Uta” in my head just to retribute the lack of momentum before/after Nagisa killed Koro-sensei. And just then, just then... I was feeling a bit chilled and emotional.
How does it feel seeing Koro-sensei getting killed for a third/forth time but was still somehow less emotional than how the manga or the anime moved my heartstrings? :’))
And the epilogue... the less I talk about it, the better. I think, however, they should have been cleared it was seven years after that one moment...
TL;DR -  I liked the movie in general... lots of the decisions in "adaptational liberties" work fine, in my opinion, I guess... but maaaaaaaan, the pacing/edition, and my kids' lack of full characterization :'). That moment and the epilogue... Why, oh, why.

So I've seen all the LSW movie now and I have Thoughts and it's been a while since I did any kind of anime review so I just had to type this up.
(Note 1: No, I'm not sharing any links to where to find it. I know there's a less-than-legal link floating around that you can find on Tumblr in the tag if you look around. I actually used Google Chrome and a VPN to rent LSW for 500 yen for two days from the official Bandai Channel site linked here.)
(Note 2: The entire thing has not been subbed yet as far as I know. My knowledge of Japanese is spotty at best especially when it comes to listening rather than reading, but I've read the novel translations and the manga enough that even without subs I have a pretty good idea of what's going on.)
-We open on Fushimi's rainy Scepter 4 induction ceremony that was shown in the trailer. I suddenly remember how in the novel it's mentioned that the raindrops don't hit Munakata because of his King powers and it makes the part in MK where he has Awashima holding an umbrella for him while everyone else gets soaked that much more peak troll.
-There's this weird computer-y thing as Fushimi closes his eyes and I don't know if it quite works for me? This isn't jungle guys, the Blues can just be fancy in the rain, it's cool.
-Fushimi takes the sword and they totally cut out Saru snarking back at Munakata about the whole 'pride and pledge and such isn't really necessary.' I wanted to see Fushimi being a little shit why do you deny me.
-They also cut out Fushimi seeing Yata's hand reaching for the sword, instead we only have Fushimi taking it as he voiceovers the whole 'The first King said take this hand. The second King said take this sword.' The background also gets all computer-y again and it looks a little cheap and weird? This is not the first strange decision this movie will be making.
-Then that weird kid from the sixth movie promo material who looks like he escaped from Handshakers and has pokeballs for eyes says something profound-ish, etc etc TIME FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL BABIES.
-We cut to Yata on the toilet. Not what it sounds like I swear.
-Middle school Misaki so cute and dissatisfied as he hides in the bathroom. He spots something in the next stall and climbs up to look, like Romeo ascending Juliet's toilet balcony or somesuch.
-Fushimi is also on the toilet. Also not what it sounds like.
-Flirting ensues, with Yata being cute and enthusiastic and Fushimi playing hard to get by yelling at him to go away. Ah, young love.
-Yata mentions his phone has been getting weird messages due to jungle. That's called spam, Yata-chan, and you're probably too young to be reading anything that has a lot of xs in the subject line.
-Triumphant video game music plays as Fushimi's voice gets all excited and he lets Yata come over to watch him, which is when we see poor baby has a bruise from being beaten up by upperclassmen. (I'd say that's what happens without Yata there to save him but he probably ended up getting beaten less in the movie than the novel precisely because of that XD)
-They've known each other for like two minutes and already Yata wants to beat people up to defend Fushimi's honor.
-Fushimi proceeds to beat his opponent in jcube while Yata yells about how amazing it is and we get that 'this guy is scary...but amazing' moment, aka the actual exact moment where Yata falls totally in love.
-Fushimi's triumphant smile gives me life.
-Cue Yata walking to school. We don't really get any exact passage of time indications here but I like to assume this was at least a few days later – Fushimi's still a bit standoffish but Yata has clearly already officially adopted him as New Best Friend.
-Yata gets Aya's letter in his locker and proceeds to show us all that yes, he can get even cuter than he already was.
-He goes running after Fushimi and there's this weird slo-mo thing for a moment? I feel like if we're going for that there should be like romantic music playing or something.
-Other students stare at them, wondering if these two are really going continue to be this gay in public. (Spoiler alert: yes. Yes they are.)
-And then Aya tackle-hugs Yata. I really like her voice, it sounds super cutesy in just the right affected way, and even the big anime eyes work well for her character (since I get the impression from the novel she's supposed to look young). Also that 'Mi-sa-ki-pyuun!' is so cute.
-'You know what would be completely gratuitous?' 'What?' 'If instead of Aya wearing pumpkin pants like she explicitly says she is in the novel, we put in a middle schooler pantyshot.' 'Great idea!' -Gora, probably.
-Yata hides behind Fushimi because he too has had enough of this fanservice.
-Yata tries to use Fushimi as his totally heterosexual excuse to get away from the scary girl and Aya's voice becomes noticeably less high pitched and cutesy as she talks to Fushimi. I think they did a good job with showing the shift in the way she talks to Fushimi versus how she speaks to Yata.
-Aya tells Yata about the jungle mission and then shows him all the hateful messages she received. Yata looks away and we see his own phone, with the mean chat messages his 'friends' exchanged about him. The former Yata team still sucks and are not even worthy of showing up in this movie.
-Yata adorably clings to Fushimi and have I mentioned he is adorable because I'm dying here.
-So our trio heads out to summon the airship. Aya shows Yata the program she created to decode jungle's hints and Fushimi noticeably sighs and walks away when Yata calls it 'cool.' Someone's jealous~
-Aya's mom calls and Yata takes the opportunity to go talk with Fushimi. This part is really abbreviated from the novel, with Fushimi only confirming that Aya's his cousin before Aya breaks in to ask Yata to talk to her mom, so we don't get any of the family talk between them. I get that there was no way the movie could fit everything in but I think it's an unfortunate loss that will pretty much continue throughout the movie – Yata's backstory gets really shafted here, continuing the trend of LSW tending to be more about Fushimi than about both Fushimi and Yata as it should be.
-Yata's face as he starts his girl impersonation, I can't. Fukujun's female voice sounds like an old woman, Aya is cracking up and so am I, this is beautiful.
-And Fushimi laughs. I think I like how the manga did this one better, in the movie it seems more like mocking laughter than real happy laughter that I think it's supposed to be, and it felt more like he was trying to suppress it. Basically even though Aya's like 'Fushimi's laughing?' I don't get the impression that this is supposed to be a rare event, which I think the novel was intending and which for me the manga managed to convey.
-They spot the airship in the distance and Fushimi starts recalculating the position as Yata stares in awe and Aya gets annoyed. No smiley face like in the novel though, alas.
-Fushimi's ready to give up on chasing the airship but of course Yata's fired up now, and the bicycle built for three kicks off in hot pursuit. Yata strains to peddle even though you know Aya and Fushimi combined probably weigh like barely anything.
-Of course they still can't catch up and we get that 'If we'd gotten on...would anything change?' I feel like the visuals let this moment down a little – the manga was more dynamic here – but Mamoru Miyano's voice acting almost makes up for it, with just a slight undercurrent of longing underneath the tone.
-'A different world?' Yes Yata, you would have seen a different world where an immortal man has an airship complete with its own Real Doll or whatever that thing Colorless was dancing with in S1 was. Maybe it's better they missed the airship.
-Another cut straight to Yata in front of Fushimi's house. Again this makes sense to cut everything before it to streamline things, but I'm sad to lose Aya's comments on Fushimi's family and the mention of him being home when the house got robbed.
-Precious sick baby Saru coughing as he works on what is clearly meant to be Yata's watch. Someone's already got a crush.
-We get the whole 'Yata taking care of sick Fushimi' part and I love everything this scene chooses to be, Fushimi is just so precious and confused as to why Yata's there taking care of him. Also huge props to Mamoru Miyano because the voice acting in this scene is adorable, every little 'Yataaa' makes my heart go doki doki.
-The last time Yata goes back to check on him and Fushimi is sitting up and looking so shocked and amazed because Yata came when he called and he's being loved and taken care of and no one has ever done that before someone hold me my heart can't take this.
-Yata makes Fushimi food and then falls asleep and it's all so wonderful and sweet gosh I hope a raging asshole doesn't show up to ruin it all.
-'Who are you?' One raging asshole, right on time.
Tumblr media
-Niki's voice...isn't really what I was expecting? It's a bit deep in a way that I'm not sure works for me... I mean, he does sound like he needs to be punched in the face so that's spot on. As far as Nikis go though I think I give stage play Niki the edge as far as how I imagined him sounding.
-Niki threatens to stuff a mantis in Yata's mouth and we hear the sounds of poor sick baby Fushimi stumbling his way through the giant house as fast as he can go, likely falling over things and breathing hard and just terrified because he needs to get Yata away from his asshole trash king father now.
-And Fushimi absolutely screams at Niki to shut up and it's beautiful and painful and this entire scene just makes me want to kidnap him and save him from his terrible dad.
-Niki's laugh is just kinda there too, like anime!Niki doesn't quite manage that distinctive 'gyahaha' that stage play Niki did so well.
-Fushimi outside with Yata and again the voice acting is so good, that desperate little 'Yata!' and then the hesitant, stumbling attempts at thanking Yata when Fushimi's never thanked anyone before. My heart.
-Yata says he'll see Fushimi at school and Fushimi smiles and I just...precious baby. Must protect.
-Of course this beauty couldn't last forever and Fushimi's face falls as he has to go back inside to face the piece of unburnable trash sitting on the stairs. This is the one place Niki's voice 100% worked for me – that 'Saruhiko! Asoboze~' was just chilling.
-And we begin part two, with Yata and Fushimi hanging out on the street where they'll shortly meet Mikoto. Yata mom gets cheated out of not just a name but a cameo animated appearance too, why this Gora.
-They use a mix of old and new animation for this part – Yata drinking and then throwing the drink is clearly the exact animation from S1 but Mikoto catching it has been newly animated. That's probably for the best – the bigger eyes work well enough with Fushimi and Yata, since they're supposed to be kids, but there would be a pretty obvious difference between the old and new styles with Mikoto. (I think Mikoto looking back at them might be from S1 though...honestly this just makes me miss the S1 animation style again.)
-Cut to Fushimi getting yelled at for having his phone out in class. Fushimi of course gives no fucks and walks right out, and Yata runs after him while their teacher is completely done with this level of gay.
-I don't really like how those last two scenes went flow-wise, it feels kinda abrupt? The scene with Sarumi meeting Homra continues to feel shoved in and awkwardly out of place even in its own movie, and having nothing to really indicate the passing of time between Yata visiting Fushimi at his home to the two of them on the street and then back to class makes things feel choppy to me here. I assume they rearranged things from the novel for time reasons but it definitely feels shuffled around.
-Yata asks if Fushimi's going home and says he'll go too, and Fushimi has this little '...sorry' moment that's adorable, especially when Yata proceeds to put a hand on his shoulder and smiles and I think this movie is as in love with Yata as Fushimi is, every scene of him smiling is so bright.
-Yata mentions that they're third years already, finally giving some indication of how time moves in this movie thank you Yata.
-Fushimi pulls up jungle, showing Yata pictures that jungle's managed to take of various Homra members as part of a mission. I'm just concerned that someone is stalking Kusanagi.
-They discuss the rumors of the 'Red Monster' as images of Mikoto looking scary cross the screen. My favorite part of this is when they show Mikoto and the Homra members in silhouette with glowing red eyes looking all ominous, except one of the silhouettes is clearly Totsuka and I'm pretty sure the worst he's gonna do to you guys is ask if you want to help him with a hobby.
-We also get a close up of glowing eyes Fujishima. Did someone kick a dog in his presence, or...?
-Yata proposes to Fushimi talks about how they should get a place together and we get a quick flash of Niki looking like an asshole, which is his specialty. 'You don't need a home like that.'
-Yata says their place should have a helicopter pad and suddenly we're in Yata vision with an adorable cartoony plane rising up from a hidden door and just when you thought Yata couldn't be cuter.
-...Followed by Fushimi vision which is basically a mad science lab featuring human-like organisms in glowing pods. The chuunibyou is strong.
-The two of them walk off discussing plans and being in love as Aya stares down from the window, wondering why she's even in this movie again.
-Back to the Fushimi House of Shitty Parents, with Kisa making her cameo. Her character design is just way too....soft, I think, for my tastes. I feel like the manga did the better job of portraying a beautiful but cold and professional woman. Also she's got a hedgehog on her shoulder (or it's some kind of fluffy necklace thing, idk, it's weird why is it there why isn't she in her party dress like she should be).
-Her voice feels a little too pleasant for me too, though it does shift slightly colder when she gets off the phone and starts talking to Fushimi.
-Also while on the one hand the front of the house being wide and empty fits, since we know they don't keep anything valuable where people can see, the background here feels a bit...off? Like at one point we see these huge open doorways behind Fushimi and Kisa and it looks like they live in a fucking museum or something, like there's 'rich person's house' and 'no one actually has a house that looks like this.'
-Kisa tells Fushimi his dad is in the hospital and leaves, her cameo appearance over for the day. She still got more screentime than Yata's mom.
-Fushimi thinks about Niki's illness and then smiles and laughs, as we all should.
-Back to school, and Aya is pissed at Fushimi only being in 45th place in exams and that he isn't competing with her, because once again Fushimi gives no fucks he's moving in with his boyfriend and doesn't need no education.
-Aya mentions getting into Tsubakigahara high school and Fushimi cleans his glasses, reminding me that I wish we'd gotten to see Aya in her glasses animated.
-'Have you ever listened to me with your eyes sparkling and saying 'amazing'?' And Fushimi walks right past her because he doesn't want a rival, he wants someone who will look at him as he is and think that he's worth something, that he's amazing from the point of view beyond just what society expects.
-And Aya scores a direct hit with her backpack! Throwing things at people must run in the Fushimi family.
-Fushimi says he doesn't hate Aya and for a moment she stares at him with romance in her eyes....and then he kicks her backpack right back in her face. Such a smooth talker. At least they resisted the urge to put in another pantyshot there.
-Cut to the Sarumi Apartment of Love. The quick pan up the building makes it feel like they should be on the top floor even though we know from the novel it's a first floor apartment. Also the building looks a bit too fancy for me, considering their apartment's supposed to be cheap and purchased via an underworld-type realtor.
-Yata shows off his skateboard tricks and Fushimi is not interested. He's just playing hard to get again.
-Yata and Fushimi plan their attack on the surprise party and are so cute and hopeful and it's depressing knowing this is really the beginning of the end of their sense of invincibility.
-KNUCKLE BUMP!
-Also please note Fushimi's loft is big enough that Yata can like climb right up there with him and there's plenty of room for things like for example making out if the two of them wanted to do such things you know just saying.
-The night of the surprise party. Dewa and Chitose get to make appearances trying to disperse the crowd as Yata waits on top of the roof and Fushimi runs the computers while wearing a cute stripey blanket.
-They discuss the plan as tiny CGI people hang out around Homra. It looks like the bar is being attacked by rogue escapees from a Sims game (new plan: Yata leads them to the nearest pool and Fushimi removes the ladder).
-Fushimi is still wearing a stripey blanket on his head, and he is adorable. Just to make note of the important things.
-Fushimi begins the hacking mission as everyone puts on freaky-ass masks. Did Hisui have a coupon for the local freaky mask shop or something? Was this a wholesale deal?
-The jungle kids start shooting off party poppers. Sensing a threat to his bar counter, Kusanagi finally makes an appearance.
-Fushimi sends out a fake mail to indicate jungle's having server issues and we see Aya in the crowd, which makes you think her presence here is going to be important. Spoiler alert: unlike in the novel, her presence has no payoff and means nothing.
-Yata dons his own freaky mask and skateboards into the fray. His acting is slightly less bad than I expected it to be but Fushimi still facepalms over it.
-Fushimi's terminal sparks green and a tiny avatar appears in the corner. I think I liked the manga interpretation of Hisui's avatar guy better, there he was just a faceless completely unassuming avatar and here it's a little guy in a suit and glasses who looks more distinctive. I do like the way his voice is computerized but still obviously Hisui under it, which gets more pronounced the more he talks.
-At the end when the avatar goes all demony, I think this is another point for the manga which actually looked scary, businessman-avatar looks a bit more on the silly side. Though for Fushimi it was probably creepy either way (also it makes me wonder about Hisui on the other end of that transmission turning his avatar into a scary demon while his parrot eats his hair).
-Fushimi pulls the plug on his computer and then is off and running, yelling Yata's name over and over again, just so desperate to be sure Yata's all right.
-”Saruhiko!” “Misaki!” My heart.
-Yata drags Fushimi into a corner and Fushimi has that 'it's our—my loss' moment before they suddenly get attacked by party poppers again. One hits close to Fushimi's eye but it's just a random hit, which makes me wonder why they bothered even showing Aya before.
-I love Fushimi dragging Yata away here – he sounds just so harried, like here he's lost and he wasn't superior at all, and even worse he's put Misaki in danger and he just has no idea what to do.
-More fireworks come flying at them as Mikoto makes his grand appearance at last, in a giant ball of flame.
-I feel like the blocking of this scene was really weird, it seems like Fushimi and Yata should have been being swarmed by masked people but in order to save animation budget they just had random firecrackers flying around and then all of a sudden Saru's being dragged off by fangirls enemies. I wish it had been a little more frantic.
-Yata running towards Mikoto while yelling at him to save Saruhiko was perfect though, he's just so terrified for Fushimi's sake.
-I really loved the whole scene of Mikoto saving Fushimi, the way Fushimi looks up as the fire rains down and then Totsuka coming up behind him and holding him as lovely music plays, the atmosphere was so lovely (….though it kinda made me suddenly want some TotsuFushi. Just a little).
-Totsuka keeps hugging Fushimi, doing what we all wish we could.
-And we finally get a proper Sarumi hug! If nothing else at least the anime didn't punk out with a leg hug, we got a real hug this time.
-Fushimi and Yata head home in failure. Fushimi clenches his fist and you can see bruises on his fingers, my poor child.
-Back to the hospital where ding dong the dick is dead. The manga only implied that Kisa was a terrible mother who made her middle school age son collect his dead dad's body, the anime nicely confirms it by having her call Fushimi and tell him to do it.
-The manga was a little more abrupt and creepy with this scene, where Fushimi briefly sees Niki sitting up and mocking him. Even dead Niki is punchable.
-Also I like how even dead Niki's hair is perfectly styled. Are those bangs natural or what?
-Fushimi loses it and starts yelling at a corpse. It's almost like making your traumatized and abused middle schooler son retrieve his dad's dead body was a bad idea or something.
-A rubix cube falls from Niki's hand and--

-Okay, things that aren't baby Saru, right, there's still movie left.
-Yata and Aya talk in the rain, I'm mostly distracted by how cute Yata looks in a poncho.
-It feels a little depressing that the last we see of Aya is her sobbing in the rain. I don't think the novel's resolution for her was the best either but at least there was something like closure.
-'The first King said take this hand. The second King said take this sword.' Fushimi voiceovers once again as Yata and Fushimi stand side by side in front of Mikoto at Bar Homra. They reach for Mikoto's flaming hands and...roll credits. Wait, roll credits?
-So yeah the entire back half of the novel isn't in the movie, it ends with Sarumi joining Homra. I wonder how this plays to people who haven't read the novel, because to me it very much feels like this is a narrative without an actual ending. I think they tried to make a parallel with the 'take this hand/take this sword' part but without the latter half of the novel the opening scene actually feels somewhat out of place to me, like it has no real relation to the rest of the movie (I almost feel like since they were messing with the novel anyway they should have started the movie with Yata and Fushimi reaching for Mikoto's hand, then backtracking to how we got to this point and finally jumping forward just as Fushimi's hand is about to take Mikoto's and suddenly have him reaching for the sword instead, looking to the side as Yata's phantom hand next to him fades away).
-I think they were in somewhat of a difficult position with LSW because the novel's too long for the movie they were making so some things had to be cut – and to be fair I have no idea how I would get the whole novel into a movie of this length either – but I can't deny it doesn't suffer for losing that back half. LSW is the story of how Yata and Fushimi met and then how they broke apart, and the movie to me feels like it's building towards a resolution that doesn't happen. In that sense starting the movie with the Homra installation rather than S4 might have worked better, restructuring the source material so it's more focused around how the two of them became friends and joined Homra with only the hovering specter of future betrayal at the end.
-Similarly, as far as dropped plot threads go, I liked seeing Aya animated but she feels somewhat... extraneous in the movie as it is. Her presence is mainly necessary for kickstarting the airship plot but as the movie stands that's it, and her arc feels rushed with a lot of pointless moments – having her be at the surprise party, for example, but not having her attack Fushimi and then cutting out the two of them speaking at Niki's funeral and Aya talking about being Fushimi's enemy, all of which ultimately makes her appearance there in the movie be without any real payoff. It also means her final interaction in the movie is with Yata rather than Fushimi, even though her character is more of a foil for Fushimi than Yata and her relationship with him more complex.
-Other things they cut I didn't like: no anthill? Seeing babu Saru with the rubix cube was fine enough and I do think the movie made it pretty clear that Fushimi was being abused, but the anthill is so essential to Fushimi's worldview that I feel losing it downplays some of his trauma a bit. As sad as poor upset Fushimi's face was when Niki destroyed the rubix cube it really doesn't carry the punch that this image does:

-Also this was a weakness in the novel too but once again, Yata gets really shafted by LSW. In the novel he at least has some presence in the first part of the novel but the movie completely removes everything about feeling left out of his family and even the part where he finds out his 'friends' hate him is a lot more downplayed than in the novel. A lot of what we see of Yata feels like it's from Fushimi's view, all those dazzling smiles, and it's wonderful from that perspective but I wish we'd gotten a little more of Yata's inner life here.
-On the good end, I am glad we at least got what we did of animated LSW. Middle school Yata is an utter gem of adorableness and I am so thankful to have him. The voice acting was also really great, Fukujun and Mamo knocked it out of the part (best in show probably goes to Mamo's 'Yataaa' during the scene where he's sick in bed, that was absolutely precious). Niki was complete trash in just the right way and I think the movie did a good job in conveying the dread and fear Fushimi feels towards him. If I had to rank adaptations I would probably put the anime last after the manga and the stage play but it's still a good watch and I'm looking forward to actually being able to, y'know, watch a nice legal stream with subs and then actually be able to buy it on disc some time in the next decade whenever Viz finally stops being jerks and give people who can't go running across the country to random cons on half a week's notice a chance to watch.
