"Mike Donald is a professional salesman - a fact he makes good use of in these songs. He was born in Scunthorpe, educated in Hull, and now works for an educational publishing concern in Leeds. For ten years Mike has clocked up 40,000 miles par year selling confectionery, washing machine and, more recently, audio-visual equipment. Mike has visited most towns and villages between the Midlands and the Scottish border, and has entertained in Working Men's Clubs, Folk Clubs, hotels, churches, on ferryboats on the Humber, and even on specially charted trains to Wales and Scotland, as well as radio and TV. His musical background is varied, with experience in Skiffle, Rock, and Rhythm and Blues groups, and dance bands. Mike has used his Yorkshire upbringing and wide musical background to produce his own material, which he describes as 'not quite folk': this is his third record. "I was still under contract with De Laurentiis to make The Voyage of Mastorna and so was in total confusion. Then along come these French producers who beg me to participate in a multi-episode film... They assured me that of the three stories, I would make one, Bergman another and Welles the last. So I said yes. Then it turned out that they had lied about Bergman and Wallet, who didn't trust them and refused to sign. I continued anyway, simply because this was a way of freeing myself from De Laurentiis. When they told me my partners were to be Malle and Vadim, I could have legally refused. With me, Welles and Bergman - three visionary artists whose images have richness of meaning - there would have been some common quality in this homage to Poe.That's why I signed, not for monetary considerations. But you see, Iwai emerging from a period of crisis; I was overwhelmed with troubles, had not worked for two years. I could have broken the contract, but that didn't seem right. So I proceeded. And now I'm glad I did because, although I'm not able to judge my own work, because I never see it when it is finished, I think this film is perhaps my most representative." "Growing up on Vermont on a hillside overlooking the Connecticut River Valley, I used to listen to recordings of cowboys on old 45's and sing along with 'Come a ti-yi-yippee yay.' Today there isn't much left to remind us of what America used to be like, but as long as there are fiddlers gathered around a fireplace somewhere swapping old tunes, there will be a few bright lights to remind us. I recently saw an eighty-five years old fiddler surrounded by a group of teenagers at a fiddle contest, one of the places where old people are enjoyed by the young. And I guess I toe needed the good laughs, good times, excitement and joy that playing this music had brought me. This record begins with some spirited reels and jigs from Scotland and Ireland where fiddlers are still common as sheep. In the Appalachians and the Green Mountains, by an ancient line of communication, some of the tunes are played. The reconciliation, the title tune on this record, is dedicated to all fallen angels and or fairies. The Irish word for fairy is 'sheehogues, a diminutive of shee in banshee. '...And do not think they are always little. Everything is capricious about them, even their size, taking on what size or shape pleases them. Their chief occupations are feasting, making love, giving parties and playing the most beautiful music. When a woman from Ballisodare lived among them seven years, she came home with no toes - she had danced them off. They are known to keep misfortune away from you, if you leave a little milk for them on the window-sill overnight.' - W. B. "Moving from Scotland to California after the ending of the Incredible String Band, my latest music has tended towards increasing preoccupation with these flavours, and with the able assistance of my new Merry Band I have been seeking to write a contemporary Celtic music using the old instruments in a new way. So this accoustic music is not an interpretation of traditional tunes and songs, but directly continues thousands of years heritage of songwriting and tune making. It seems to me there should be a kind of honour in music, an echo of the ages, that rekindles the spirit of the real McCoy as it were. And I hope that you who hear this record will feel it strikes a chord of recognition. In a word, I believe that I have never worked with finer musicians than Sylvia, Chris, and Jerry, and I reckon the music we make together reflects this friendship and spirit of adventure. A few months ago I acquired a book by a Harvard professor, one Barry Fell, called 'America B. C.', in which he outlines his research into the Celtic origins of numerous prehistoric buildings and stone monuments still standing in America. Many are carved with ancient writings only deciphered in the last decades. The band and I took time to explore certain of there dolmens and temples and the album cover shows us at a dolmen in upstate New York. But, whereas back home in Scotland, as well as Ireland, England, France, Spain, Portugal, etc., these standing stones are widely known and recognized as the work of Celtic forebears, this noble structure in New York state is coyly labeled on a sign nearby, 'glacial remains'. I never heard of such an artistic glacier myself."
