ON THE WAY UP IN '89 -- THE ULTIMATE ANTI-STAR DOING ROCK STAR THINGS.
PIC INFO: Spotlight on the late, great Kurt Cobain (1967-1994) signing a copy of "Bleach" at a Rough Trade record store in the UK on December 4th, 1989. 📸: Bruce Pavitt (founder of the Sub-Pop label).
OVERVIEW: "The shot was taken during Nirvana’s first European tour, a tumultuous time for the band before they blew up, with Kurt even having his passport stolen, as well as trying to jump from a speaker tower at one point. When opening for TAD and MUDHONEY at the Astoria Theatre on November 27, 1989, the music press in London were bewildered, calling them “Sub-Pop’s answer to THE BEATLES," foreshadowing their ultimate success.
I think it’s kind of a cool shot given not only is this "pre rock star Kurt," but also for the fact a copy of BLACK FLAG’s "The First Four Years" lies behind him, as well as the legendary Earache Records "Grind Crusher" compilation, which largely put grindcore on the map. Eagle eyed viewers will also notice a copy of BAD BRAINS’ "Quickness" LP as well.
Most of you probably rolled your eyes seeing this post thinking “yet another post about how Kurt Cobain liked hardcore," and yes, you wouldn’t be wrong, I’m sick of hearing about it too as if it validates hardcore’s place in music history any more because of one guy. Nonetheless, it doesn’t hinder how important this band and Sub-Pop were in putting alternative, and largely punk on the map and rehashing it for a different audience.
In 1983 prior to the label, Bruce Pavitt hosted a radio show called Subterranean Pop after his zine on the University of Washington radio station, KCMU (now KEXP). He also DJed at two local clubs, The Vogue and the all-ages venue, The Metropolis. He was possibly the only DJ in the country spinning a set of RUN DMC, MINOR THREAT, and THE SMITHS. Also Kurt put down the "Tales of Terror" LP and SACCHARINE TRUST when no one knew what or how great that shit is; it goes without saying he was a real head."

JAMES DALLAS 'LIFE FORMS’ (1982)
James Dallas is a talented producer, songwriter and saxophonist from Milwaukee. He started playing the clarinet in Junior High School at the age of thirteen, during this time public schools would loan students an instrument who could not afford their own. James originally requested an alto saxophone but none of those were available. In 1967 he got his hands on a baritone saxophone…and it became his main instrument for the next 15 years.
Dallas decided to pursue a career in entertainment (influenced by his parents who allowed him to play in a professional R&B band at the age of 14) and was possessed by an exceptional drive to excel in music. James wanting to showcase his talents as a multi-instrumentalist led him to his pursuit in playing the flute, various forms of the piano…and of course all the saxes & clarinets.
Soon he started playing with local bands and solo artists in the jazz & blues scene, he even participated on several recordings (mostly as part of the horn section)…but things really started to take of when James (together with his brother Chris and his cousin Kevin) started the outfit Heavy Weather. Most of the other bandmembers where his friends and would later become regular players on Dallas’ two solo albums ‘Life Forms’ (1982) and ‘Here And Now’ (1984).
The album we are proudly presenting you today: Life Forms (1982) was James Dallas debut album. Recorded at Mauer Brothers’ Studio and completely self-funded with the help and encouragement of his peers and family. Dallas paid for all the recording time and the privately pressed 1000 copies of the album…back then he could not have imagined that decades later it would become a much sought-after collectible that fetches high prices.
On Life Forms James Dallas is joined by a top cast of musicians such as Earl Thompson on percussion, Myron McClain and Noland Clark on drums, Rick Lacey and Robert Walls Jr. on guitar, Jake Simmons and Kevin Whitehead on bass. Kevin Whitehead (who is James’ cousin and known for his work with Ben Webster, Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, Sun Ra and Pharoah Sanders) also wrote a track for the album. The whole venture truly is a family affair because James’ brother Christopher can also be heard on keyboards and the album design was handled by his other brother Calvin.
James Dallas surely deserves the title of ‘multi-instrumentalist’ because not only did he compose the majority of the songs (and produced the whole album) but next to his trademark soprano saxophone work, he also took care of playing the electric piano, flute, vocoder and keyboards.
The six songs on the fantastic Life Forms album are a heavy mix of mind-blowing funk, fusion and Vocoder/Odyssey synth extravaganza. If you are a serious collector or a smooth jazz underground enthusiast, then this is the thing for you! Also included is the magnificent ‘Sidetrack’ song that was included on the Numero compilation ‘NuLeaf’ released in 2020.
Tidal Waves Music (in collaboration with The Numero Group) now proudly presents the FIRST ever vinyl reissue of this iconic Jazz-Funk-Soul fusion album (original copies tend to go for large amounts on the secondary market) originally released in 1982 as a private pressing and now finally back available as a limited 180g vinyl edition (limited to 500 copies) complete with the original artwork and obi strip.

This Is The Kit Announce Gruff-Rhys Produced Album, Share “Inside Outside”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This Is The Kit is Paris-based and the love child of Kate Stables whom just released their new single “Inside Outside”. The track is super joyful and charming. The single bounces on your ears playfully and the video that accompanies it shows their playful nature. We are instantly in love with This is the Kit. Check out “Inside Outisde” below: Sounds: Regina Spektor, Kate Bush Feels: warm and cuddly More About This Is The Kit: This Is The Kit, the Paris-based group led by Kate Stables, today announced the band’s new album Careful Of Your Keepers–produced by Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals)–will be released on June 9th, 2023, via Rough Trade Records. The album’s propulsive and introspective lead single “Inside Outside” finds Stables as magnetic as ever, joined once again by her stalwart band of Rozi Plain (bass/vocals), Neil Smith (guitar), and Jamie Whitby-Coles (drums), and accented by a cascading horn quartet arrangement by Jesse D. Vernon. The track arrives alongside a video directed by Hannah Owen that features Stables and a pair of dancers capturing the song’s ebullient charm. Stables explained the song’s reflective lyrics: “What makes things happen? How much choice do we have? Electricity and chemistry that is out of our control? Chewing. Choosing. Internal forces or external ones? Do we just behave the way people expect us to behave? Or do they pre-empt what's happening? Before it's happened? Because they can see it in us before we know it ourselves? Big change that has been brewing for longer than we realise. Were we just ignoring it? Was it so deeply buried? Or did we see it all along but chose to ignore it? How much does anything change? Or is it just the way we see it that changes?” This Is The Kit will embark on their biggest headlining U.K. tour later this year, including a show at London, U.K.’s Barbican on November 25th; a full routing is below and tickets are on-sale now. U.S. shows will be announced soon. Careful Of Your Keepers is daring and soft, cutting and warm–a wild feat of complexity and combined dispositions. There’s a shared language of the band’s family experience that is as audible as ever in these recordings, which boast beautiful instrumental performances that still leave the nuanced space required for Stables’ vocals to live at the forefront. “The album was nearly called Goodbye Bite. And in a way it still is,” says Stables. “I went for Careful Of Your Keepers in the end. It’s one of my favorite songs on the album, a song that for me holds the general feeling of the album as a whole. The fragility of things. Of situations. Of relationships. Of humans. What we do to look after each other and ourselves. The passing of time and what that does to us, and how we live our lives going forward.” Guiding the ship through changing seas is producer Rhys. Stables described his role as being a “tonesetter,” watchful and attentive to the band dynamics while making sure to always follow a hunch for where a new sound could find its place in the recording. “I’ve always loved the idea of working with him somehow, and when this album started getting planned, I realized that maybe this was my chance to reach out and see if he was up for working together,” Stables explains. “And he was! As if that wasn’t enough, he was also up for doing a bit of singing on the record, which totally blew my mind and made my year. His way with harmony and melody and the tone and quality of his voice is a totally killer combo.” “They are so ridiculously talented–and every member is a great producer in their own right–so it was just a matter of trying to capture the magic they make when playing live together,” Rhys says of the recording process. “Their playing is by default so thoughtful and complimentary in terms of respect to each other’s parts and to the integrity of the songs themselves that it creates a beautiful foundation of often cosmic interplay that’s always in aid of Kate’s voice and vision as a songwriter.” Careful Of Your Keepers will be available on dark green vinyl variant exclusive to indie record stores, an eco-colored vinyl exclusive to the webstore, and standard black vinyl and CD; pre-order now HERE. MARCOS VALLE & AZYMUTH ‘FLY CRUZEIRO’ (1972)
Marcos Valle needs little introduction, born in Rio de Janeiro in 1943, Mr. Valle is an award-winning/chart-hitting Brazilian singer, songwriter and record producer. He was raised on a staple diet of classical, Brazilian popular music and North American jazz. Marcos Valle grew up to be one of the most influential & innovating musicians of the Bossa nova period and is regarded as one of the greatest Brazilian artists of all time. He has recorded albums for North American labels such as EMI, Warner Brothers & Verve…cementing his career with a series of tight musical workouts moving seamlessly between funk, samba, soundtracks, soul, jazz, dance and rock. Valle contributed to some of the most important recordings by artists including Sarah Vaughan, Frank Sinatra, Sergio Mendes, Leon Ware, Chicago and Airto Moreira. Mr. Valle’s work has been sampled/remixed by major artists from the likes of Jay-Z, Kanye West & Madlib.
One of Valle’s favorite bands to frequently collaborate with was no doubt Azymuth, who took their name from a Valle song!
Azymuth (Bertrami-Malheiros-Conti) started their individual careers in the 1960s in the emergent Bossa nova and jazz scene of Rio, living in the same bohemian block in Copacabana and playing in small bars as session musicians under various other names.
It was the early 1970s when Azymuth really began to cause a stir and Marcos Valle invited them to record on a soundtrack LP he was doing. The unique Azymuth sound was now born: a mix of electronic music, samba, funk and jazz that they defined as MPB-jazz (MPB stands for Musica Popular Brasileira). Over the decades Azymuth released extremely successful albums (selling millions of copies) on labels such as Polydor, Som Livre and Atlantic. Hitting the charts on multiple occasions, Azymuth played at the Monterrey and Montreux jazz festivals and at venues around the globe.
The band has worked with legendary musicians from Joe Henderson to Stevie Wonder and they’ve also been remixed/sampled by artists such as Flying Lotus, will.i.am, MF DOOM and Peanut Butter Wolf. Their unique brand of fusion-music has influenced three generations of musicians, DJs, and producers. Music journalists across the spectrum from mainstream to underground, celebrated these raw yet wildly imaginative and musically accomplished tracks that were a revelation of jazz, funk and disco, with some even stating that the roots of EDM were on display in their early recordings.
On the album we are presenting you (Brazil by Music – Fly Cruzeiro) the listener is getting yet another fantastic early Valle/Azymuth collaboration. Released in 1972, this rare album was pressed and gifted to customers of the ‘Cruzeiro’ airline company. This promotional record came as no surprise because the connection between Cruzeiro Airlines and Valle was very tight (Valle’s father was the manager and his brother was a co-pilot there).
Next to the Valle/Azymuth material present, other songs include some of the all-time best Brazilian standards originally written by renowned artists such as Jorge Ben & Antonio Carlos Jobim. Take a flight with us through this fantastic album and into some of the best Jazz, Funk & Bossa Nova the Brazilian musical landscape has to offer.
This official reissue is now available as a deluxe 180g TANGERINE COLORED vinyl edition (limited to 500 copies) packaged in a gatefold jacket and also comes with an insert containing rare pictures and liner notes courtesy of Marcos Valle himself.
Available in stores September 15, 2023. Pre-order now from www.lightintheattic.net
